Direct imaging of exoplanets is a challenging task that involves distinguishing faint planetary signals from the overpowering glare of their host stars, often obscured by time-varying stellar noise known as "speckles". The predominant algorithms for speckle noise subtraction employ principal-based point spread function (PSF) fitting techniques to discern planetary signals from stellar speckle noise. We introduce torchKLIP, a benchmark package developed within the machine learning (ML) framework PyTorch. This work enables ML techniques to utilize extensive PSF libraries to enhance direct imaging post-processing. Real-time control (RTC) is pivotal for any Adaptive Optics (AO) system, including high-contrast imaging of exoplanets and circumstellar environments. It is the brain of the AO system, and what wavefront sensing and control (WFS\&C) techniques need to work with to achieve unprecedented image quality and contrast, ultimately advancing our understanding of exoplanetary systems in the context of high contrast imaging (HCI). Developing WFS\&C algorithms first happens in simulation or a lab before deployment on-sky. The transition to on-sky testing is often challenging due to the different RTCs used. Sharing common RTC standards across labs and telescope instruments would considerably simplify this process. A data architecture based on the interprocess communication method known as shared memory is ideally suited for this purpose. The CACAO package, an example of RTC based on shared memory, was initially developed for the Subaru-SCExAO instrument and now deployed on several benches and instruments. This proceeding discusses the challenges, requirements, implementation strategies, and performance evaluations associated with integrating a shared memory-based RTC. The Santa Cruz Extreme AO Laboratory (SEAL) bench is a platform for WFS\&C development for large ground-based segmented telescopes. Currently, SEAL offers the user a non-real-time version of CACAO, a shared-memory based RTC package initially developed for the Subaru-SCExAO instrument, and now deployed on several benches and instruments. We show here the example of the SEAL RTC upgrade as a precursor to both RTC upgrade at the 3-m Shane telescopes at Lick Observatory (Shane-AO) and a future development platform for the Keck II AO. Continuous wavefront sensing benefits space observatories in on-orbit optical performance maintenance. To measure the phase of a wavefront, phase retrieval is an attractive technique as it uses multiple point spread function (PSF) images that are acquired by the telescope itself without extra metrology systems nor complicated calibration. The focus diverse phase retrieval utilizes PSFs from predetermined defocused positions to enhance the dynamic range of the algorithm. We describe an updated visible light active optics testbed with the addition of a linear motorized focus stage. The performance of the phase retrieval algorithm in broadband is tested under various cases. While broadband pass filters have advantages in higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the performance of phase retrieval can be restricted due to blurred image caused by diffraction and increased computing cost. We used multiple bandpass filters (10 nm, 88 nm, and 150 nm) and investigated effects of bandwidth on the accuracy and required image acquisition conditions such as SNR, reaching accuracies below 20 nm RMS wavefront error at the widest bandwidth. We also investigated the dynamic range of the phase retrieval algorithm depending on the bandwidth and required amount of defocus to expand dynamic range. Finally, we simulated the continuous wavefront sensing and correction loop with a range of statistically generated representative telescope disturbance time series to test for edge cases.

When a telescope doesn't reach a reasonable point spread function on the detector or detectable wavefront quality after initial assembly, a coarse phase alignment on-sky is crucial. Before utilizing a closed loop adaptive optics system, the observatory needs a strategy to actively align the telescope sufficiently for fine wavefront sensing. This paper presents a method of early-stage alignment using a stochastic parallel-gradient-descent (SPGD) algorithm which performs random perturbations to the optics of a three mirror anastigmat telescope design. The SPGD algorithm will drive the telescope until the wavefront error is below the acceptable range of the fine adaptive optics system to hand the telescope over. The focused spot size over the field of view is adopted as a feed parameter to the SPGD algorithm and wavefront peak-to-valley error values are monitored to directly compare our mechanical capabilities to our alignment goal of diffraction limited imaging and fine wavefront sensing., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, presented at SPIE Optics + Photonics 2024

As wavefront quality demands tighten on space systems for applications such as astronomy and laser communication, mounting small optics such that the wavefront is undisturbed, positioning is adjustable and the design is producible, while surviving harsh space environments, is a continuing challenge. We designed multiple candidate flexure mounts to support small optics (up to 50 mm diameter, and over 100 grams) to survive the qualification and acceptance tests of small spacecraft and units as defined in ISO 19683 and a mounting structure which is adjustable in decenter [+/-0.5mm], tip/tilt +/-0.5deg, and piston [+/-0.25mm]. We will present design details along with measurements showing less than approximately lambda/10 wavefront contribution from the optic bonding process, along with thermal and multi-axis vibration test data showing the mounted optics survived the acceptance testing loads and are suitable for operation in a wide range of harsh environments.

Epsilon Eridani ($\epsilon$ Eri) is one of the first debris disk systems detected by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). However, the system has thus far eluded detection in scattered light with no components having been directly imaged. Its similarity to a relatively young Solar System combined with its proximity makes it an excellent candidate to further our understanding of planetary system evolution. We present a set of coronagraphic images taken using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) coronagraph on the Hubble space telescope at a small inner working angle to detect a predicted warm inner debris disk inside 1". We used three different post-processing approaches; Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF), Karhunen-Lo`eve Image Processing (KLIP), and Classical reference differential imaging (RDI), to best optimize reference star subtraction, and find that NMF performed the best overall while KLIP produced the absolute best contrast inside 1". We present limits on scattered light from warm dust, with constraints on surface brightness at 6 mJy/as$^2$ at our inner working angle of 0.6". We also place a constraint of 0.5 mJy/as$^2$ outside 1", which gives us an upper limit on the brightness for outer disks and substellar companions. Future space observatories will likely have segmented primaries, causing diffraction effects that reduce coronagraph performance. Reflective binary pupil apodizer masks can mitigate these, with the metamaterial black silicon (BSi) showing promise as a strong absorber. To bring contrast ratios to the $10^-{10}$ level as needed to observe Earth-like exoplanets, feature sizes on these BSi masks will need to be less than $5$ microns when paired with MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems) deformable mirrors. As scalar diffraction cannot reliably model this feature size, we developed a Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) model of BSi masks using Meep software. The Space Coronagraph Optical Bench (SCoOB) is a high-contrast imaging testbed built to demonstrate starlight suppression techniques at visible wavelengths in a space-like vacuum environment. The testbed is designed to achieve ${<}10^{-8}$ contrast from $3-10\lambda/D$ in a one-sided dark hole using a liquid crystal vector vortex waveplate and a 952-actuator Kilo-C deformable mirror (DM) from Boston Micromachines (BMC). We have recently expanded the testbed to include a field stop for mitigation of stray/scattered light, a precision-fabricated pinhole in the source simulator, a Minus K passive vibration isolation table for jitter reduction, and a low-noise vacuum-compatible CMOS sensor. We report the latest contrast performance achieved using implicit electric field conjugation (iEFC) at a vacuum of ${\sim}10^{-6}$ Torr and over a range of bandpasses with central wavelengths from 500 to 650nm and bandwidths (BW) from $\ll 1\%$ to 15\%. Our jitter in vacuum is $<3\times10^{-3} \lambda/D$, and the best contrast performance to-date in a half-sided D-shaped dark hole is $2.2\times10^{-9}$ in a $\ll 1 \%$ BW, $4\times10^{-9}$ in a 2\% BW, and $2.5\times10^{-8}$ in a 15\% BW., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation 2024

High-contrast imaging in the next decade aims to image exoplanets at smaller angular separations and deeper contrasts than ever before. A problem that has recently garnered attention for telescopes equipped with high-contrast coronagraphs is polarization aberration arising from the optics. These aberrations manifest as low-order aberrations of different magnitudes for orthogonal polarization states and spread light into the dark hole of the coronagraph that cannot be fully corrected. The origin of polarization aberrations has been modeled at the telescope level. However, we don't fully understand how polarization aberrations arise at the instrument level. To directly measure this effect, we construct a dual-rotating-retarder polarimeter around the SCoOB high-contrast imaging testbed to measure its Mueller matrix. With this matrix, we directly characterize the diattenuation, retardance, and depolarization of the instrument as a function of position in the exit pupil. We measure the polarization aberrations in the Lyot plane to understand how polarization couples into high-contrast imaging residuals., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures

High-order wavefront sensing and control (HOWFSC) is key to create a dark hole region within the coronagraphic image plane where high contrasts are achieved. The Roman Coronagraph is expected to perform its HOWFSC with a ground-in-the-loop scheme due to the computational complexity of the Electric Field Conjugation (EFC) algorithm. This scheme provides the flexibility to alter the HOWFSC algorithm for given science objectives. The baseline HOWFSC scheme involves running EFC while observing a bright star such as {\zeta} Puppis to create the initial dark hole followed by a slew to the science target. The new implicit EFC (iEFC) algorithm removes the optical diffraction model from the controller, making the final contrast independent of model accuracy. While previously demonstrated with a single DM, iEFC is extended to two deformable mirror systems in order to create annular dark holes. The algorithm is then applied to the Wide-Field-of-View Shaped Pupil Coronagraph (SPC-WFOV) mode designed for the Roman Space Telescope using end-to-end physical optics models. Initial monochromatic simulations demonstrate the efficacy of iEFC as well as the optimal choice of modes for the SPC-WFOV instrument. Further simulations with a 3.6% wavefront control bandpass and a broader 10% bandpass then demonstrate that iEFC can be used in broadband scenarios to achieve contrasts below 1E-8 with Roman. Finally, an EMCCD model is implemented to estimate calibration times and predict the controller's performance. Here, 1E-8 contrasts are achieved with a calibration time of about 6.8 hours assuming the reference star is {\zeta} Puppis. The results here indicate that iEFC can be a valid HOWFSC method that can mitigate the risk of model errors associated with space-borne coronagraphs, but to maximize iEFC performance, lengthy calibration times will be required to mitigate the noise accumulated during calibration., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures

Paraxial diffraction modeling based on the Fourier transform has seen widespread implementation for simulating the response of a diffraction-limited optical system. For systems where the paraxial assumption is not sufficient, a class of algorithms has been developed that employs hybrid propagation physics to compute the propagation of an elementary beamlet along geometric ray paths. These "beamlet decomposition" algorithms include the well-known Gaussian Beamlet Decomposition (GBD) algorithm, of which several variants have been created. To increase the computational efficiency of the GBD algorithm, we derive an alternative expression of the technique that utilizes the analytical propagation of beamlets to tilted planes. We then use this accelerated algorithm to conduct a parameter-space search to find the optimal combination of free parameters in GBD to construct the analytical Airy function. The experiment is conducted on a consumer-grade CPU, and a high-performance GPU, where the new algorithm is 34 times faster than the previously published algorithm on CPUs, and 67,513 times faster on GPUs., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, Accepted to Optics Express on April 18 2024

Directly observing exoplanets with coronagraphs is impeded by the presence of speckles from aberrations in the optical path, which can be mitigated in hardware with wavefront control as well as in post-processing. This work explores using an instrument model in post-processing to separate astrophysical signals from residual aberrations in coronagraphic data. The effect of wavefront error (WFE) on the coronagraphic intensity consists of a linear contribution and a quadratic contribution. When either of the terms is much larger than the other, the instrument response can be approximated by a transfer matrix mapping WFE to detector plane intensity. From this transfer matrix, a useful projection onto instrumental modes that removes the dominant error modes can be derived. We apply this projection to synthetically generated Roman Space Telescope hybrid Lyot coronagraph (HLC) data to extract "robust observables," which can be used instead of raw data for applications such as detection testing. The projection improves planet flux ratio detection limits by about 28% in the linear regime and by over a factor of 2 in the quadratic regime, illustrating that robust observables can increase sensitivity to astrophysical signals and improve the scientific yield from coronagraphic data. While this approach does not require additional information such as observations of reference stars or modulations of a deformable mirror, it can and should be combined with these other techniques, acting as a model-informed prior in an overall post-processing strategy., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

For diffraction-limited optical systems an accurate physical optics model is necessary to properly evaluate instrument performance. Astronomical observatories outfitted with coronagraphs for direct exoplanet imaging require physical optics models to simulate the effects of misalignment and diffraction. Accurate knowledge of the observatory's PSF is integral for the design of high-contrast imaging instruments and simulation of astrophysical observations. The state of the art is to model the misalignment, ray aberration, and diffraction across multiple software packages, which complicates the design process. Gaussian Beamlet Decomposition (GBD) is a ray-based method of diffraction calculation that has been widely implemented in commercial optical design software. By performing the coherent calculation with data from the ray model of the observatory, the ray aberration errors can be fed directly into the physical optics model of the coronagraph, enabling a more integrated model of the observatory. We develop a formal algorithm for the transfer-matrix method of GBD, and evaluate it against analytical results and a traditional physical optics model to assess the suitability of GBD for high-contrast imaging simulations. Our GBD simulations of the observatory PSF, when compared to the analytical Airy function, have a sum-normalized RMS difference of ~10^-6. These fields are then propagated through a Fraunhofer model of a exoplanet imaging coronagraph where the mean residual numerical contrast is 4x10^-11, with a maximum near the inner working angle at 5x10^-9. These results show considerable promise for the future development of GBD as a viable propagation technique in high-contrast imaging. The size of the optics used in observatories is often limited by fabrication, metrology, and handling technology, but having a large primary mirror provides significant benefits for scientific research. The evolution of rocket launch options enables heavy payload carrying on orbit and outstretching the telescope's form-factor choices. Moreover, cost per launch is lower than the traditional flight method, which is obviously advantageous for various novel space observatory concepts. The University of Arizona has successfully fabricated many large-scale primary optics for ground-based observatories including the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT, 8.4 meter diameter two primary mirrors), Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (now renamed to Vera C. Rubin Observatory, 8.4 meter diameter monolithic primary and tertiary mirror), and the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT, 8.4 meter diameter primary mirror seven segments). Launching a monolithic primary mirror into space could bypass many of the difficulties encountered during the assembly and deployment of the segmented primary mirrors. However, it might bring up unprecedented challenges and hurdles, also. We explore and foresee the expected challenges and evaluate them. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Coronagraph Instrument is a critical technology demonstrator for NASA's Habitable Worlds Observatory. With a predicted visible-light flux ratio detection limit of 1E-8 or better, it will be capable of reaching new areas of parameter space for both gas giant exoplanets and circumstellar disks. It is in the final stages of integration and test at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, with an anticipated delivery to payload integration in the coming year. Extreme wavefront correction is required for coronagraphs on future space telescopes to reach 1e-8 or better starlight suppression for the direct imaging and characterization of exoplanets in reflected light. Thus, a suite of wavefront sensors working in tandem with active and adaptive optics are used to achieve stable, nanometer-level wavefront control over long observations. In order to verify wavefront control systems comprehensive and accurate integrated models are needed. These should account for any sources of on-orbit error that may degrade performance past the limit imposed by photon noise. An integrated model of wavefront sensing and control for a space-based coronagraph was created using geometrical raytracing and physical optics propagation methods. Our model concept consists of an active telescope front end in addition to a charge-6 vector vortex coronagraph instrument. The telescope uses phase retrieval to guide primary mirror bending modes and secondary mirror position to control the wavefront error within tens of nanometers. The telescope model is dependent on raytracing to simulate these active optics corrections for compensating the wavefront errors caused by misalignments and thermal gradients in optical components. Entering the coronagraph, a self-coherent camera is used for focal plane wavefront sensing and digging the dark hole. We utilize physical optics propagation to model the coronagraph's sensitivity to mid and high-order wavefront errors caused by optical surface errors and pointing jitter. New development approaches, including launch vehicles and advances in sensors, computing, and software, have lowered the cost of entry into space, and have enabled a revolution in low-cost, high-risk Small Satellite (SmallSat) missions. To bring about a similar transformation in larger space telescopes, it is necessary to reconsider the full paradigm of space observatories. Here we will review the history of space telescope development and cost drivers, and describe an example conceptual design for a low cost 6.5 m optical telescope to enable new science when operated in space at room temperature. It uses a monolithic primary mirror of borosilicate glass, drawing on lessons and tools from decades of experience with ground-based observatories and instruments, as well as flagship space missions. It takes advantage, as do large launch vehicles, of increased computing power and space-worthy commercial electronics in low-cost active predictive control systems to maintain stability. The utilization of a 6.5m monolithic primary mirror in a compact three-mirror anastigmat (TMA) telescope design offers unprecedented capabilities to accommodate various next generation science instruments. This design enables the rapid and efficient development of a large aperture telescope without segmented mirrors while maintaining a compact overall form factor. With its exceptional photon collection area and diffraction-limited resolving power, the TMA design is ideally suited for both the ground and space active/adaptive optics concepts, which require the capture of natural guide stars within the field of view for wavefront measurement to correct for misalignments and shape deformation caused by thermal gradients. The wide field of view requirement is based on a statistical analysis of bright natural guide stars available during observation. The primary mirror clear aperture, compactness requirement, and detector pixel sizes led to the choice of TMA over simpler two-mirror solutions like Ritchey-Chretien (RC) telescopes, and the TMA design offers superior diffraction-limited performance across the entire field of view. The standard conic surfaces applied to all three mirrors (M1, M2, and M3) simplify the optical fabrication, testing, and alignment process. Additionally, the TMA design is more tolerant than RC telescopes. Continuous wavefront sensing on future space telescopes allows relaxation of stability requirements while still allowing on-orbit diffraction-limited optical performance. We consider the suitability of phase retrieval to continuously reconstruct the phase of a wavefront from on-orbit irradiance measurements or point spread function (PSF) images. As phase retrieval algorithms do not require reference optics or complicated calibrations, it is a preferable technique for space observatories, such as the Hubble Space Telescope or the James Webb Space Telescope. To increase the robustness and dynamic range of the phase retrieval algorithm, multiple PSF images with known amount of defocus can be utilized. In this study, we describe a recently constructed testbed including a 97 actuator deformable mirror, changeable entrance pupil stops, and a light source. The aligned system wavefront error is below ~30nm. We applied various methods to generate a known wavefront error, such as defocus and/or other aberrations, and found the accuracy and precision of the root mean squared error of the reconstructed wavefronts to be less than ~10nm and ~2nm, respectively. Further, we discuss the signal-to-noise ratios required for continuous dynamic wavefront sensing. We also simulate the case of spacecraft drifting and verify the performance of the phase retrieval algorithm for continuous wavefront sensing in the presence of realistic disturbances.

Integrated optical models allow for accurate prediction of the as-built performance of an optical instrument. Optical models are typically composed of a separate ray trace and diffraction model to capture both the geometrical and physical regimes of light. These models are typically separated across both open-source and commercial software that don't interface with each other directly. To bridge the gap between ray trace models and diffraction models, we have built an open-source optical analysis platform in Python called Poke that uses commercial ray tracing APIs and open-source physical optics engines to simultaneously model scalar wavefront error, diffraction, and polarization. Poke operates by storing ray data from a commercial ray tracing engine into a Python object, from which physical optics calculations can be made. We present an introduction to using Poke, and highlight the capabilities of two new propagation physics modules that add to the utility of existing scalar diffraction models. Gaussian Beamlet Decomposition is a ray-based approach to diffraction modeling that allows us to integrate physical optics models with ray trace models to directly capture the influence of ray aberrations in diffraction simulations. Polarization Ray Tracing is a ray-based method of vector field propagation that can diagnose the polarization aberrations in optical systems. We present a generalized Non-negative factorization (NMF)-based data reduction pipeline for circumstellar disk and exoplanet detection. By using an adaptable pre-processing routine that applies algorithmic masks and corrections to improper data, we are able to easily offload the computationally-intensive NMF algorithm to a graphics processing unit (GPU), significantly increasing computational efficiency. NMF has been shown to better preserve disk structural features compared to other post-processing approaches and has demonstrated improvements in the analysis of archival data. The adaptive pre-processing routine of this pipeline, which automatically aligns and applies image corrections to the raw data, is shown to significantly improve chromatic halo suppression. Utilizing HST-STIS and JWST-MIRI coronagraphic datasets, we demonstrate a factor of five increase in real-time computational efficiency by using GPUs to perform NMF compared to using CPUs. Additionally, we demonstrate the usefulness of higher numbers of NMF components with SNR and contrast improvements, which necessitates the use of a more computationally efficient approach for data reduction.

In order to reach contrast ratios of $10^{-8}$ and beyond, coronagraph testbeds need source optics that reliably emulate nearly-point-like starlight, with microfabricated pinholes being a compelling solution. To verify, a physical optics model of the Space Coronagraph Optical Bench (SCoOB) source optics, including a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) pinhole simulation, was created. The results of the FDTD simulation show waveguide-like behavior of pinholes. We designed and fabricated microfabricated pinholes for SCoOB made from an aluminum overcoated silicon nitride film overhanging a silicon wafer substrate, and report characterization of the completed pinholes., Comment: Submitted to SPIE Optical Engineering + Applications (OP23O)

In the development of space-based large telescope systems, having the capability to perform active optics correction allows correcting wavefront aberrations caused by thermal perturbations so as to achieve diffraction-limited performance with relaxed stability requirements. We present a method of active optics correction used for current ground-based telescopes and simulate its effectiveness for a large honeycomb primary mirror in space. We use a finite-element model of the telescope to predict misalignments of the optics and primary mirror surface errors due to thermal gradients. These predicted surface error data are plugged into a Zemax ray trace analysis to produce wavefront error maps at the image plane. For our analysis, we assume that tilt, focus and coma in the wavefront error are corrected by adjusting the pointing of the telescope and moving the secondary mirror. Remaining mid- to high-order errors are corrected through physically bending the primary mirror with actuators. The influences of individual actuators are combined to form bending modes that increase in stiffness from low-order to high-order correction. The number of modes used is a variable that determines the accuracy of correction and magnitude of forces. We explore the degree of correction that can be made within limits on actuator force capacity and stress in the mirror. While remaining within these physical limits, we are able to demonstrate sub-25 nm RMS surface error over 30 hours of simulated data. A major goal of proposed future space observatories, such as the Habitable World Observatory, is to directly image and characterize Earth-like planets around Sun-like stars to search for habitability signatures requiring the starlight suppression (contrast) of 1e-10. One of the significant aspects affecting this contrast is the polarization aberrations generated from the reflection from mirror surfaces. The polarization aberrations are the phase-dependent amplitude and phase patterns originating from the Fresnel reflections of the mirror surfaces. These aberrations depend on the angle of incidence and coating parameters of the surface. This paper simulates the polarization aberrations for an on-axis and off-axis TMA telescope of a 6.5 m monolithic primary mirror. We analyze the polarization aberrations and their effect on the coronagraphic performance for eight different recipes of mirror coatings for Astronomical filter bands g-I: three single-layer metal coatings and five recipes of protective coatings. First, the Jones pupils are estimated for each coating and filter band using the polarization ray tracing in Zemax. Then, we propagate these Jones pupils through a Vector Vortex Coronagraph and Perfect Coronagraphs using hcipy, a physical optics-based simulation framework. The analysis shows that the two main polarization aberrations generated from the four mirrors are the retardance-defocus and retardance-tilt. The simulations also show that the coating plays a significant role in determining the strength of the aberrations. Polarization observations through the next-generation large telescopes will be invaluable for exploring the magnetic fields and composition of jets in AGN, multi-messenger transients follow-up, and understanding interstellar dust and magnetic fields. The 25m Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) is one of the next-generation large telescopes and is expected to have its first light in 2029. The telescope consists of a primary mirror and an adaptive secondary mirror comprising seven circular segments. The telescope supports instruments at both Nasmyth as well as Gregorian focus. However, none of the first or second-generation instruments on GMT has the polarimetric capability. This paper presents a detailed polarimetric modeling of the GMT for both Gregorian and folded ports for astronomical B-K filter bands and a field of view of 5 arc minutes. At 500nm, The instrumental polarization is 0.1% and 3% for the Gregorian and folded port, respectively. The linear to circular crosstalk is 0.1% and 30% for the Gregorian and folded ports, respectively. The Gregorian focus gives the GMT a significant competitive advantage over TMT and ELT for sensitive polarimetry, as these telescopes support instruments only on the Nasmyth platform. We also discuss a list of polarimetric science cases and assess science case requirements vs. the modeling results. The future Habitable Worlds Observatory aims to characterize the atmospheres of rocky exoplanets around solar-type stars. The vector vortex coronagraph (VVC) is a main candidate to reach the required contrast of $10^{-10}$. However, the VVC requires polarization filtering and every observing band requires a different VVC. The triple-grating vector vortex coronagraph (tgVVC) aims to mitigate these limitations by combining multiple gratings that minimize the polarization leakage over a large spectral bandwidth. In this paper, we present laboratory results of a tgVVC prototype using the In-Air Coronagraphic Testbed (IACT) facility at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Space Coronagraph Optical Bench (SCoOB) at the University of Arizona Space Astrophysics Lab (UASAL). We study the coronagraphic performance with polarization filtering at 633 nm and reach a similar average contrast of $2 \times 10^{-8}$ between 3-18 $\lambda/D$ at the IACT, and $6 \times 10^{-8}$ between 3-14 $\lambda/D$ at SCoOB. We explore the limitations of the tgVVC by comparing the testbed results. Next-generation large segmented mirror telescopes are expected to perform direct imaging and characterization of Earth-like rocky planets, which requires contrast limits of $10^{-7}$ to $10^{-8}$ at wavelengths from I to J band. One critical aspect affecting the raw on-sky contrast are polarization aberrations arising from the reflection from the telescope's mirror surfaces and instrument optics. We simulate the polarization aberrations and estimate their effect on the achievable contrast for three next-generation ground-based large segmented mirror telescopes. We performed ray-tracing in Zemax and computed the polarization aberrations and Jones pupil maps using the polarization ray-tracing algorithm. The impact of these aberrations on the contrast is estimated by propagating the Jones pupil maps through a set of idealized coronagraphs using hcipy, a physical optics-based simulation framework. The optical modeling of the giant segmented mirror telescopes (GSMTs) shows that polarization aberrations create significant leakage through a coronagraphic system. The dominant aberration is retardance defocus, which originates from the steep angles on the primary and secondary mirrors. The retardance defocus limits the contrast to $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-4}$ at 1 $\lambda/D$ at visible wavelengths, and $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-6}$ at infrared wavelengths. The simulations also show that the coating plays a major role in determining the strength of the aberrations. Polarization aberrations will need to be considered during the design of high-contrast imaging instruments for the next generation of extremely large telescopes. Quantitative assessment of the abdominal region from clinically acquired CT scans requires the simultaneous segmentation of abdominal organs. Thanks to the availability of high-performance computational resources, deep learning-based methods have resulted in state-of-the-art performance for the segmentation of 3D abdominal CT scans. However, the complex characterization of organs with fuzzy boundaries prevents the deep learning methods from accurately segmenting these anatomical organs. Specifically, the voxels on the boundary of organs are more vulnerable to misprediction due to the highly-varying intensity of inter-organ boundaries. This paper investigates the possibility of improving the abdominal image segmentation performance of the existing 3D encoder-decoder networks by leveraging organ-boundary prediction as a complementary task. To address the problem of abdominal multi-organ segmentation, we train the 3D encoder-decoder network to simultaneously segment the abdominal organs and their corresponding boundaries in CT scans via multi-task learning. The network is trained end-to-end using a loss function that combines two task-specific losses, i.e., complete organ segmentation loss and boundary prediction loss. We explore two different network topologies based on the extent of weights shared between the two tasks within a unified multi-task framework. To evaluate the utilization of complementary boundary prediction task in improving the abdominal multi-organ segmentation, we use three state-of-the-art encoder-decoder networks: 3D UNet, 3D UNet++, and 3D Attention-UNet. The effectiveness of utilizing the organs' boundary information for abdominal multi-organ segmentation is evaluated on two publically available abdominal CT datasets. The development of spaceborne coronagraphic technology is of paramount importance to the detection of habitable exoplanets in visible light. In space, coronagraphs are able to bypass the limitations imposed by the atmosphere to reach deeper contrasts and detect faint companions close to their host star. To effectively test this technology in a flight-like environment, a high-contrast imaging testbed must be designed for operation in a thermal vacuum (TVAC) chamber. A TVAC-compatible high-contrast imaging testbed is undergoing development at the University of Arizona inspired by a previous mission concept: The Coronagraphic Debris and Exoplanet Exploring Payload (CDEEP). The testbed currently operates at visible wavelengths and features a Boston Micromachines Kilo-C DM for wavefront control. Both a vector vortex coronagraph and a knife-edge Lyot coronagraph operating mode are under test. The optics will be mounted to a 1 x 2 meter pneumatically isolated optical bench designed to operate at 10^-8 torr and achieve raw contrasts of 10^-8 or better. The validation of our optical surface quality, alignment procedure, and first light results are presented. The 2020 Decadal Survey on Astronomy and Astrophysics endorsed space-based high contrast imaging for the detection and characterization of habitable exoplanets as a key priority for the upcoming decade. To advance the maturity of starlight suppression techniques in a space-like environment, we are developing the Space Coronagraph Optical Bench (SCoOB) at the University of Arizona, a new thermal vacuum (TVAC) testbed based on the Coronagraphic Debris Exoplanet Exploring Payload (CDEEP), a SmallSat mission concept for high contrast imaging of circumstellar disks in scattered light. When completed, the testbed will combine a vector vortex coronagraph (VVC) with a Kilo-C microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) deformable mirror from Boston Micromachines Corp (BMC) and a self-coherent camera (SCC) with a goal of raw contrast surpassing $10^{-8}$ at visible wavelengths. The Roman coronagraph instrument will demonstrate high-contrast imaging technology, enabling the imaging of faint debris disks, the discovery of inner dust belts, and planets. Polarization studies of debris disks provide information on dust grains' size, shape, and distribution. The Roman coronagraph uses a polarization module comprising two Wollaston prism assemblies to produce four orthogonally polarized images ($I_{0}$, $I_{90}$, $I_{45}$, and $I_{135}$), each measuring 3.2 arcsecs in diameter and separated by 7.5 arcsecs in the sky. The expected RMS error in the linear polarization fraction measurement is 1.66\% per resolution element of 3 by 3 pixels. We present a mathematical model to simulate the polarized intensity images through the Roman CGI, including the instrumental polarization and other uncertainties. We use disk modeling software, MCFOST, to model $q$, $u$, and polarization intensity of the debris disk, Epsilon-Eridani. The polarization intensities are convolved with the coronagraph throughput incorporating the PSF morphology. We include model uncertainties, detector noise, speckle noise, and jitter.
