1. Donor Support to Inclusive Education for Children with Disabilities: Who Does What in GPE Partner Countries?

Abstract: Children with disabilities remain among the most excluded from education in Global Partnership for Education (GPE) partner countries and other lower-income countries. Despite considerable activity funded both through GPE and by other donors, as well as by partner countries themselves, the level of international support to inclusive education remains too low and patchy for countries to transform their education systems so they are fully inclusive of children with disabilities. Development partners need to coordinate; help to build a stronger evidence base at global, regional and national levels; and go beyond isolated interventions to support reforms that have the potential to make the whole system more inclusive. To do this, development partners need to share knowledge on their activities globally and at the country level. This paper, and the underlying mapping exercise, aims to facilitate knowledge sharing in the sector by analyzing thematic and geographic focus areas of major development partners supporting inclusive education.

2. Televised Versus In-Class Instruction--What the Literature Implies.

Abstract: This paper presents a review of research on the effectiveness of educational television compared to traditional face-to-face instruction. The studies reviewed are presented under seven rubrics: TV as a catalyst for learning; two-way TV; use of commercial TV shows; simulation of a real situation; TV integrated as part of the classroom lecture; TV courses instead of lecture in the classroom; and TV courses in the home. The author concludes that while TV has proved effective for teaching basic knowledge, it is deficient for teaching cognitive skills requiring more than "level I" knowledge. 3. Grit, Retention and Student Success in a South African Distance Education Institution: A Postgraduate Triad?

Abstract: Psychological grit has gained substantial interest among traditional higher education practitioners, with many seeking the link between grit, academic performance and retention. The literature pertaining to distance education cohorts is scant, however, especially within the South African context, which holds unique challenges for accessing and completing a tertiary qualification. This study made use of a nonexperimental design and used Grit-S and demographic data combined with records of student performance and progression to ascertain grit's role in determining retention and degree completion at a mega distance education institution in South Africa. The sample comprised 775 honours students who registered for their qualification for the first time in 2017. Results from the final structural model highlighted the significant influence of perseverance and first-to-second year retention on student success (operationalised at qualification completion). A subsequent binary logistic regression revealed odds ratios of 1.98 (CI: 1.45 - 2.69) and 12.15 (CI: 7.40 - 19.95), respectively. The final model explained 24% of the variance in qualification completion rates, with the biggest contributor being first-to-second year retention ([beta] = 0.45; p < 0.01). 4. The Growth of Galaxy Stellar Haloes Over $0.2 \leq z \leq 1.1$

Abstract: Galaxies are predicted to assemble their stellar haloes through the accretion of stellar material from interactions with their cosmic environment. Observations that trace stellar halo buildup probe the processes that drive galaxy size and stellar mass growth. We investigate stellar halo assembly over $0.2 \leq z \leq 1.1$ in a mass-complete ($M_{\star} \geq 10^{9.5}M_{\odot}$) sample of 242,456 star-forming and 88,421 quiescent galaxies (SFGs and QGs) from the CLAUDS and HSC-SSP surveys. We extract galaxy rest-frame $g$-band surface brightness ($\mu_g$) profiles to study faint, extended emission in galaxy outskirts. We examine trends in galaxy assembly by analyzing the median $\mu_g$ profiles in different SFG and QG \msS ranges with decreasing redshift and connecting evolution in galaxy $\mu_g$ profiles with the underlying stellar mass growth in galaxies. Since $z=1.1$, the majority of evolution in the median $\mu_g$ profiles of galaxies ($\sim$64$\%$ in SFGs and $\sim$71$\%$ in QGs) occurs throughout their stellar halo regions (2-10$R_e$). More massive galaxies assemble stellar halo material more rapidly at $0.2 \leq z \leq 1.1$. Over this period, QGs grow a larger fraction of their stellar haloes than SFGs at fixed $M_{\star}$ (factor of $\sim$1.2). Although star formation can account for the stellar halo growth observed in low-mass SFGs ($10^{9.5}M_\odot \leq M_\star < 10^{10.5}M_\odot$), high-mass SFGs ($M_\star \geq 10^{10.5}M_\odot$) and both low- and high-mass QGs require an additional assembly mechanism. Our results suggest accretion via minor mergers drives additional stellar halo growth in these galaxies. The contribution from accretion is larger in more massive galaxies (over $M_{\star} \geq 10^{9.5}M_{\odot}$), and QGs exhibit larger fractional increases to their ex-situ fractions over $0.2 \leq z \leq 1.1$ than SFGs at fixed $M_{\star}$., Comment: 29 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. Abstract: Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is crucial for understanding Earth's oceans and climate, significantly influencing weather patterns, ocean currents, marine ecosystem health, and the global energy balance. Large-scale SST monitoring relies on satellite infrared radiation detection, but cloud cover presents a major challenge, creating extensive observational gaps and hampering our ability to fully capture large-scale ocean temperature patterns. Efforts to address these gaps in existing L4 datasets have been made, but they often exhibit notable local and seasonal biases, compromising data reliability and accuracy. To tackle this challenge, we employed deep neural networks to reconstruct cloud-covered portions of satellite imagery while preserving the integrity of observed values in cloud-free areas, using MODIS satellite derived observations of SST. Our best-performing architecture showed significant skill improvements over established methodologies, achieving substantial reductions in error metrics when benchmarked against widely used approaches and datasets. These results underscore the potential of advanced AI techniques to enhance the completeness of satellite observations in Earth-science remote sensing, providing more accurate and reliable datasets for environmental assessments, data-driven model training, climate research, and seamless integration into model data assimilation workflows.

6. Contextual Data Integration for Bike-sharing Demand Prediction with Graph Neural Networks in Degraded Weather Conditions

Abstract: Demand for bike sharing is impacted by various factors, such as weather conditions, events, and the availability of other transportation modes. This impact remains elusive due to the complex interdependence of these factors or locationrelated user behavior variations. It is also not clear which factor is additional information which are not already contained in the historical demand. Intermodal dependencies between bike-sharing and other modes are also underexplored, and the value of this information has not been studied in degraded situations. The proposed study analyzes the impact of adding contextual data, such as weather, time embedding, and road traffic flow, to predict bike-sharing Origin-Destination (OD) flows in atypical weather situations Our study highlights a mild relationship between prediction quality of bike-sharing demand and road traffic flow, while the introduced time embedding allows outperforming state-of-the-art results, particularly in the case of degraded weather conditions. Including weather data as an additional input further improves our model with respect to the basic ST-ED-RMGC prediction model by reducing of more than 20% the prediction error in degraded weather condition.

7. The ATTUNE model for Artificial Trust Towards Human Operators

Abstract: This paper presents a novel method to quantify Trust in HRI. It proposes an HRI framework for estimating the Robot Trust towards the Human in the context of a narrow and specified task. The framework produces a real-time estimation of an AI agent's Artificial Trust towards a Human partner interacting with a mobile teleoperation robot. The approach for the framework is based on principles drawn from Theory of Mind, including information about the human state, action, and intent. The framework creates the ATTUNE model for Artificial Trust Towards Human Operators. The model uses metrics on the operator's state of attention, navigational intent, actions, and performance to quantify the Trust towards them. The model is tested on a pre-existing dataset that includes recordings (ROSbags) of a human trial in a simulated disaster response scenario. The performance of ATTUNE is evaluated through a qualitative and quantitative analysis. 8. Diode effect in Fraunhofer patterns of disordered multi-terminal Josephson junctions

Abstract: We study the role of different spatial inhomogeneities in generating the conditions for the appearance of a superconducting diode effect in the Fraunhofer pattern of wide Josephson junctions. Through the scattering matrix approach, we highlight the role of mirror symmetry of the junction in forbidding the diode effect in both the two-terminal and the multi-terminal case. As sources of mirror symmetry breaking, we study spatial potentials of long and short wavelength with respect to the size of the system, mimicking the effect of side gates and atomic scale disorder, respectively, as well as the geometry of the junction, and assess their impact on the diode effect. As a common trend, we observe qualitatively similar rectification patterns magnified at the nodal points of the Fraunhofer pattern by destructing interference. In multi-terminal mirror-symmetric setups, we single out the phase at additional terminals as a controllable knob to tune the diode effect at the finite field. Abstract: The X-ray polarization observations made possible with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) offer new ways of probing high-energy emission processes in astrophysical jets from blazars. Here we report on the first X-ray polarization observation of the blazar S4 0954+65 in a high optical and X-ray state. During our multi-wavelength campaign on the source, we detected an optical flare whose peak coincided with the peak of an X-ray flare. This optical-X-ray flare most likely took place in a feature moving along the parsec-scale jet, imaged at 43 GHz by the Very Long Baseline Array. The 43 GHz polarization angle of the moving component underwent a rotation near the time of the flare. In the optical band, prior to the IXPE observation, we measured the polarization angle to be aligned with the jet axis. In contrast, during the optical flare the optical polarization angle was perpendicular to the jet axis; after the flare, it reverted to being parallel to the jet axis. Due to the smooth behavior of the optical polarization angle during the flare, we favor shocks as the main acceleration mechanism. We also infer that the ambient magnetic field lines in the jet were parallel to the jet position angle. The average degree of optical polarization during the IXPE observation was (14.3$\pm$4.1)%. Despite the flare, we only detected an upper limit of 14% (at 3$\sigma$ level) on the X-ray polarization degree; although a reasonable assumption on the X-ray polarization angle results in an upper limit of 8.8% ($3\sigma$). We model the spectral energy distribution (SED) and spectral polarization distribution (SPD) of S4 0954+65 with leptonic (synchrotron self-Compton) and hadronic (proton and pair synchrotron) models. 10. Use-Inspired Mobile Robot to Improve Safety of Building Retrofit Workforce in Constrained Spaces

Abstract: The inspection of confined critical infrastructure such as attics or crawlspaces is challenging for human operators due to insufficient task space, limited visibility, and the presence of hazardous materials. This paper introduces a prototype of PARIS (Precision Application Robot for Inaccessible Spaces): a use-inspired teleoperated mobile robot manipulator system that was conceived, developed, and tested for and selected as a Phase I winner of the U.S. Department of Energy's E-ROBOT Prize. To improve the thermal efficiency of buildings, the PARIS platform supports: 1) teleoperated mapping and navigation, enabling the human operator to explore compact spaces; 2) inspection and sensing, facilitating the identification and localization of under-insulated areas; and 3) air-sealing targeted gaps and cracks through which thermal energy is lost. 11. Triple Evolution Pathways to Black Hole Low-Mass X-ray Binaries: Insights from V404 Cygni

Abstract: A recent discovery shows that V404 Cygni, a prototypical black hole low-mass X-ray binary (BH-LMXB) is a hierarchical triple: the BH and donor star are orbited by a $1.2$ M$_{\odot}$ tertiary at a distance of at least $3500$ au. Motivated by this system, we evolve a grid of $\sim50,000$ triple star systems, spanning a broad range of initial orbits. Our calculations employ {\tt MESA} stellar evolution models, using {\tt POSYDON}, and self-consistently track the effects of eccentric Kozai-Lidov (EKL) oscillations, mass loss, tides, and BH natal kicks. In our simulations, the progenitors of V404 Cygni-like systems have initial outer separations of $1000 - 10000$ au and inner separations of $\sim100$ au, such that they avoid Roche lobe overflow most of the time. Later on, EKL oscillations drive the inner binary to high eccentricities until tides shrink the orbit and mass transfer begins. Notably, such systems only form in simulations with very weak black hole natal kicks ($\lesssim 5\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$) because stronger kicks unbind the tertiaries. Our simulations also predict a population of BH-LMXB triples that form via the classical common-envelope channel, when the BH progenitor does overflow its Roche lobe. The formation rate for this channel is also higher in triples than in isolated binaries because early EKL oscillations cause inner binaries with a wider range of initial separations to enter and survive a common envelope. 13. RV4Chatbot: Are Chatbots Allowed to Dream of Electric Sheep?

In this paper, we introduce RV4Chatbot, a Runtime Verification framework designed to monitor deviations in chatbot behaviour. We formalise expected behaviours as interaction protocols between the user and the chatbot. 15. Entanglement growth in the dark intervals of a locally monitored free-fermion chain

Abstract: We consider a free fermionic chain with monitoring of the particle density on a single site of the chain and study the entanglement dynamics of quantum jump trajectories. We show that the entanglement entropy grows in time towards a stationary state which display volume law scaling of the entropy, in stark contrast with both the unitary dynamics after a local quench and the no-click limit corresponding to full post-selection. We explain the extensive entanglement growth as a consequence of the peculiar distribution of quantum jumps in time, which display superpoissonian waiting time distribution characterised by a bunching of quantum jumps followed by long dark intervals where no-clicks are detected, akin to the distribution of fluorescence light in a driven atom. We show that the presence of dark intervals is the key feature to explain the effect and that by increasing the number of sites which are monitored the volume law scaling gives away to the Zeno effect and its associated area law., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

16. Non-Abelian entanglement asymmetry in random states

Abstract: The entanglement asymmetry measures the extent to which a symmetry is broken within a subsystem of an extended quantum system. Here, we analyse this quantity in Haar random states for arbitrary compact, semi-simple Lie groups, building on and generalising recent results obtained for the $U(1)$ symmetric case. We find that, for any symmetry group, the average entanglement asymmetry vanishes in the thermodynamic limit when the subsystem is smaller than its complement. When the subsystem and its complement are of equal size, the entanglement asymmetry jumps to a finite value, indicating a sudden transition of the subsystem from a fully symmetric state to one devoid of any symmetry. For larger subsystem sizes, the entanglement asymmetry displays a logarithmic scaling with a coefficient fixed by the dimension of the group. We also investigate the fluctuations of the entanglement asymmetry, which tend to zero in the thermodynamic limit. We check our findings against exact numerical calculations for the $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$ groups. 17. Cyborg Insect Factory: Automatic Assembly System to Build up Insect-computer Hybrid Robot Based on Vision-guided Robotic Arm Manipulation of Custom Bipolar Electrodes

Abstract: The advancement of insect-computer hybrid robots holds significant promise for navigating complex terrains and enhancing robotics applications. This study introduced an automatic assembly method for insect-computer hybrid robots, which was accomplished by mounting backpack with precise implantation of custom-designed bipolar electrodes. We developed a stimulation protocol for the intersegmental membrane between pronotum and mesothorax of the Madagascar hissing cockroach, allowing for bipolar electrodes' automatic implantation using a robotic arm. The assembly process was integrated with a deep learning-based vision system to accurately identify the implantation site, and a dedicated structure to fix the insect (68 s for the whole assembly process). The automatically assembled hybrid robots demonstrated steering control (over 70 degrees for 0.4 s stimulation) and deceleration control (68.2% speed reduction for 0.4 s stimulation), matching the performance of manually assembled systems. Furthermore, a multi-agent system consisting of 4 hybrid robots successfully covered obstructed outdoor terrain (80.25% for 10 minutes 31 seconds), highlighting the feasibility of mass-producing these systems for practical applications. The proposed automatic assembly strategy reduced preparation time for the insect-computer hybrid robots while maintaining their precise control, laying a foundation for scalable production and deployment in real-world applications.

18. Hunting axion dark matter with anti-ferromagnets: a case study with nickel oxide

Abstract: We show that nickel oxide, which is already a very promising target to look for sub-MeV dark matter scattering, can be employed to hunt axion dark matter, with masses in the meV range and couplings to electrons allowing them to potentially be QCD axions. We describe the interactions between axions and the collective excitations of nickel oxide in terms of a universal effective field theory, built solely out of symmetry arguments. The processes of conversion into one or two excitations provide, respectively, a narrowband and a broadband channel for the axion search, and the possibility of varying an external magnetic field up to a phase transition point allows to cover a large portion of a yet unexplored parameter space, reaching axion masses down to few fractions of an meV. Our results underline nickel oxide as an ideal candidate for a multi-purpose target for light dark matter searches.

19. An EFT for anisotropic anti-ferromagnets: gapped Goldstones, pseudo-Goldstones, and phase transitions

Abstract: We build and discuss a low energy effective field theory for anisotropic anti-ferromagnets in presence of an external magnetic field. Such an effective theory is simple yet rich, and features a number of phenomena such as the appearance of gapped Goldstones, pseudo-Goldstones and a "spin flop" phase transition, all within the regime of validity of the theory. We also discuss in detail, the quantization procedure of the free theory in the presence of a magnetic field, which is made non-trivial by the presence of a single-time derivative term. This class of materials make a precious test field for exotic phenomena in quantum field theory. Moreover, we explicitly perform the matching of the effective theory to the short distance theory of a specific anti-ferromagnet, namely, nickel oxide. The latter is particularly relevant in light of recent proposals of employing this material towards the hunt for light dark matter. As a byproduct of our study, we also re-evaluate the role played by discrete symmetries in magnetic materials, presenting it in a way that is completely consistent with the proper low energy EFT ideology.

Abstract: Although not as wide, and popular, as that of quantum mechanics, the investigation of fundamental aspects of statistical mechanics constitutes an important research field in the building of modern physics. Besides the interest for itself, both for physicists and philosophers, and the obvious pedagogical motivations, there is a further, compelling reason for a thorough understanding of the subject. The fast development of models and methods at the edge of the established domain of the field requires indeed a deep reflection on the essential aspects of the theory, which are at the basis of its success. These elements should never be disregarded when trying to expand the domain of statistical mechanics to systems with novel, little known features. It is thus important to (re)consider in a careful way the main ingredients involved in the foundations of statistical mechanics. Among those, a primary role is covered by the dynamical aspects (e.g. presence of chaos), the emergence of collective features for large systems, and the use of probability in the building of a consistent statistical description of physical systems. With this goal in mind, in the present review we aim at providing a consistent picture of the state of the art of the subject, both in the classical and in the quantum realm. 21. Rethinking negative sampling in content-based news recommendation

Abstract: News recommender systems are hindered by the brief lifespan of articles, as they undergo rapid relevance decay. Recent studies have demonstrated the potential of content-based neural techniques in tackling this problem. However, these models often involve complex neural architectures and often lack consideration for negative examples. In this study, we posit that the careful sampling of negative examples has a big impact on the model's outcome. We devise a negative sampling technique that not only improves the accuracy of the model but also facilitates the decentralization of the recommendation system. The experimental results obtained using the MIND dataset demonstrate that the accuracy of the method under consideration can compete with that of State-of-the-Art models. The utilization of the sampling technique is essential in reducing model complexity and accelerating the training process, while maintaining a high level of accuracy. Finally, we discuss how decentralized models can help improve privacy and scalability.

22. A Novel Approach to Characterize Dynamics of ECG-Derived Skin Nerve Activity via Time-Varying Spectral Analysis

Abstract: Assessment of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is one of the major approaches for studying affective states. Skin nerve activity (SKNA) derived from high-frequency components of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals has been a promising surrogate for assessing the SNS. However, current SKNA analysis tools have shown high variability across study protocols and experiments. Hence, we propose a time-varying spectral approach based on SKNA to assess the SNS with higher sensitivity and reliability. We collected ECG signals at a sampling frequency of 10 KHz from sixteen subjects who underwent various SNS stimulations. Our spectral analysis revealed that frequency bands between 150 - 1,000 Hz showed significant increases in power during SNS stimulations. Using this information, we developed a time-varying index of sympathetic function measurement based on SKNA, termed, Time-Varying Skin Nerve Activity (TVSKNA). TVSKNA is calculated in three steps: time-frequency decomposition, reconstruction using selected frequency bands, and smoothing. TVSKNA indices exhibited generally higher Youden's J, balanced accuracy, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, indicating higher sensitivity. The coefficient of variance was lower with TVSKNA indices for most SNS tasks. 23. Jet Archaeology and Forecasting: Image Variability and Magnetic Field Configuration

Abstract: We investigate how magnetic field variations around accreting black holes on event horizon scales affect the morphology of magnetically-driven jet on larger scales. By performing radiative transfer calculations on general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations, we find that temporal variation in the magnetic flux on the event horizon and the jet power are imprinted on the variability of jet width up to several hundred gravitational radii. When the magnetic flux around the black hole drops and then rises, the jet initially narrows or becomes truncated, then widens, creating a thin-thick pattern that propagates down the jet. This suggests that extended jet observations can provide a history record of horizon-scale magnetic field dynamics, and conversely, upcoming changes in the jet image can be predicted from direct observation of the magnetized accreting plasma near the black hole. Furthermore, the pattern of jet width variations shows acceleration up to the relativistic regime as it moves away from the black hole, aligning with plasma bulk motion. We also find in time-averaged images that both the bulk plasma motion and magnetic field configuration in the jet-launching region, which are sensitive to black hole spin, shape diverse features through relativistic beaming and aberration. Higher black hole spins result in more poloidal bulk motion and toroidal magnetic fields, leading to more symmetric jet images and linear polarization patterns. 24. Virtual Localisation Formula for $ SL_{\eta} $-Oriented Theories

Abstract: In this paper, we extend the Virtual Localization Formula of Levine to a wide class of motivic ring spectra, obtaining in particular a localization formula for virtual fundamental classes in Witt theory $ \mathrm{KW} $. Applying standard tools of $\mathbb A^1$-intersection theory to any $ SL_{\eta} $-oriented spectra $ \mathrm A $, we obtain an additive presentation of $ \mathrm A(BN) $, for $ N $ the normaliser of the torus in $ SL_2 $. Then we establish an equivariant Atiyah-Bott localization theorem for $ \mathrm A_N^{\mathrm{BM}}(X) $ and we conclude with the $N$-equivariant virtual localisation formula. 25. KW-Euler Classes via Twisted Symplectic Bundles

Abstract: In this paper we are going to compute the $ \mathrm{KW} $-Euler classes for rank 2 vector bundles on the classifying stack $ \mathcal{B}N $, where $N$ is the normaliser of the standard torus in $SL_2$ and $\mathrm{KW}$ represents Balmer's derived Witt groups. Using these computations we will recover, through a new and different strategy, the formulas previously obtained by Levine in Witt-sheaf cohomology. In order to obtain our results, we will prove K\"unneth formulas for products of $GL_n$'s and $SL_n$'s classifying spaces and we will develop from scratch the basic theory of twisted symplectic bundles with their associated twisted Borel classes in $SL$-oriented theories.

26. Magnetic interaction of stellar coronal mass ejections with close-in exoplanets: implication on planetary mass loss and Ly-$\alpha$ transits

Abstract: Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) erupting from the host star are expected to have effects on the atmospheric erosion processes of the orbiting planets. For planets with a magnetosphere, the embedded magnetic field in the CMEs is thought to be the most important parameter to affect planetary mass loss. In this work, we investigate the effect of different magnetic field structures of stellar CMEs on the atmosphere of a hot Jupiter with a dipolar magnetosphere. We use a time-dependent 3D radiative magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) atmospheric escape model that self-consistently models the outflow from hot Jupiters magnetosphere and its interaction with stellar CMEs. For our study, we consider three configurations of magnetic field embedded in stellar CMEs -- (a) northward $B_z$ component, (b) southward $B_z$ component, and (c) radial component. {We find that both the CMEs with northward $B_z$ component and southward $B_z$ component increase the planetary mass-loss rate when the CME arrives from the stellar side, with the mass-loss rate remaining higher for the CME with northward $B_z$ component until it arrives at the opposite side.} The largest magnetopause is found for the CME with a southward $B_z$ component when the dipole and the CME magnetic field have the same direction. We also find that during the passage of a CME, the planetary magnetosphere goes through three distinct changes - (1) compressed magnetosphere, (2) enlarged magnetosphere, and (3) relaxed magnetosphere for all three considered CME configurations. We compute synthetic Ly-$\alpha$ transits at different times during the passage of the CMEs. The synthetic Ly-$\alpha$ transit absorption generally increases when the CME is in interaction with the planet for all three magnetic configurations. We employ the Disconnected Entanglement Entropy (DEE) as a marker for detecting topological phases in the system, which is subjected to Lindblad dynamics. Abstract: Microfluidic Live-Cell Imaging (MLCI) generates high-quality data that allows biotechnologists to study cellular growth dynamics in detail. However, obtaining these continuous data over extended periods is challenging, particularly in achieving accurate and consistent real-time event classification at the intersection of imaging and stochastic biology. To address this issue, we introduce the Experiment Automation Pipeline for Event-Driven Microscopy to Smart Microfluidic Single-Cells Analysis (EAP4EMSIG). In particular, we present initial zero-shot results from the real-time segmentation module of our approach. Our findings indicate that among four State-Of-The- Art (SOTA) segmentation methods evaluated, Omnipose delivers the highest Panoptic Quality (PQ) score of 0.9336, while Contour Proposal Network (CPN) achieves the fastest inference time of 185 ms with the second-highest PQ score of 0.8575. Abstract: Complex engineering problems can be modelled as optimisation problems. For instance, optimising engines, materials, components, structure, aerodynamics, navigation, control, logistics, and planning is essential in aerospace. Metaheuristics are applied to solve these optimisation problems. The present paper presents a systematic study on applying metaheuristics in aerospace based on the literature. Relevant scientific repositories were consulted, and a structured methodology was used to filter the papers. Articles published until March 2022 associating metaheuristics and aerospace applications were selected. The most used algorithms and the most relevant hybridizations were identified. This work also analyses the main types of problems addressed in the aerospace context and which classes of algorithms are most used in each problem.

Abstract: End-to-end transformer-based trackers have achieved remarkable performance on most human-related datasets. However, training these trackers in heterogeneous scenarios poses significant challenges, including negative interference - where the model learns conflicting scene-specific parameters - and limited domain generalization, which often necessitates expensive fine-tuning to adapt the models to new domains. In response to these challenges, we introduce Parameter-efficient Scenario-specific Tracking Architecture (PASTA), a novel framework that combines Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT) and Modular Deep Learning (MDL). Specifically, we define key scenario attributes (e.g, camera-viewpoint, lighting condition) and train specialized PEFT modules for each attribute. These expert modules are combined in parameter space, enabling systematic generalization to new domains without increasing inference time. Extensive experiments on MOTSynth, along with zero-shot evaluations on MOT17 and PersonPath22 demonstrate that a neural tracker built from carefully selected modules surpasses its monolithic counterpart. 33. Ultra-Slow-Roll Inflation on the Lattice: Backreaction and Nonlinear Effects

Abstract: Violating the slow-roll regime during the final stages of inflation can significantly enhance curvature perturbations, a scenario often invoked in models producing primordial black holes and small-scale scalar induced gravitational waves. When perturbations are enhanced, one approaches the regime in which tree-level computations are insufficient, and nonlinear corrections may become relevant. In this work, we conduct lattice simulations of ultra-slow-roll (USR) dynamics to investigate the significance of nonlinear effects, both in terms of backreaction on the background and in the evolution of perturbations. Our systematic study of various USR potentials reveals that nonlinear corrections are significant when the tree-level curvature power spectrum peaks at $\mathcal{P}^{\rm max}_{\zeta} = {\cal O}(10^{-3})-{\cal O}(10^{-2})$, with 5\%$-$10\% corrections. Larger enhancements yield even greater differences. We find a simple universal relation between simulation and tree-level quantities $\dot\phi = \dot\phi_{\rm tree}\left(1+\sqrt{\mathcal{P}^{\rm max}_{\zeta,\rm tree}}\right)$ at the end of the USR phase, which is valid in all cases we consider. Additionally, we explore how nonlinear interactions during the USR phase affect the clustering and non-Gaussianity of scalar fluctuations, crucial for understanding the phenomenological consequences of USR, such as scalar-induced gravitational waves and primordial black holes. Abstract: Qualitative timeline-based planning models domains as sets of independent, but interacting, components whose behaviors over time, the timelines, are governed by sets of qualitative temporal constraints (ordering relations), called synchronization rules. Its plan-existence problem has been shown to be PSPACE-complete; in particular, PSPACE-membership has been proved via reduction to the nonemptiness problem for nondeterministic finite automata. However, nondeterministic automata cannot be directly used to synthesize planning strategies as a costly determinization step is needed. In this paper, we identify a large fragment of qualitative timeline-based planning whose plan-existence problem can be directly mapped into the nonemptiness problem of deterministic finite automata, which can then be exploited to synthesize strategies. 35. Non-Hermitian Discrete Time Crystals

Abstract: Discrete time crystals (DTC) exhibit a special non-equilibrium phase of matter in periodically driven many-body systems with spontaneous breaking of time translational symmetry. The presence of decoherence generally enhances thermalization and destroys the coherence required for the existence of DTC. In this letter, we devise a mechanism for establishing a stable DTC with period-doubling oscillations in an open quantum system that is governed by a properly tailored non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. We find a specific class of non-reciprocal couplings in our non-Hermitian dynamics which prevents thermalization through eigenstate ordering. Such choice of non-Hermitian dynamics, significantly enhances the stability of the DTC against imperfect pulses. Abstract: The Travelling Salesman Problem - TSP is one of the most explored problems in the scientific literature to solve real problems regarding the economy, transportation, and logistics, to cite a few cases. Adapting TSP to solve different problems has originated several variants of the optimization problem with more complex objectives and different restrictions. Metaheuristics have been used to solve the problem in polynomial time. Several studies have tried hybridising metaheuristics with specialised heuristics to improve the quality of the solutions. However, we have found no study to evaluate whether the searching mechanism of a particular metaheuristic is more adequate for exploring hybridization. This paper focuses on the solution of the classical TSP using high-level hybridisations, experimenting with eight metaheuristics and heuristics derived from k-OPT, SISR, and segment intersection search, resulting in twenty-four combinations. Some combinations allow more than one set of searching parameters. Problems with 50 to 280 cities are solved. Parameter tuning of the metaheuristics is not carried out, exploiting the different searching patterns of the eight metaheuristics instead. The solutions' quality is compared to those presented in the literature.

Abstract: X-ray polarization is a unique new probe of the particle acceleration in astrophysical jets made possible through the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. Here we report on the first dense X-ray polarization monitoring campaign on the blazar Mrk 421. Our observations were accompanied by an even denser radio and optical polarization campaign. We find significant short-timescale variability in both X-ray polarization degree and angle, including a $\sim90^\circ$ angle rotation about the jet axis. We attribute this to random variations of the magnetic field, consistent with the presence of turbulence but also unlikely to be explained by turbulence alone. At the same time, the degree of lower-energy polarization is significantly lower and shows no more than mild variability. Our campaign provides further evidence for a scenario in which energy-stratified shock-acceleration of relativistic electrons, combined with a turbulent magnetic field, is responsible for optical to X-ray synchrotron emission in blazar jets., Comment: 23 pages, including 8 pages of appendices. 12 figures, 3 tables. Abstract: As the signatories of this manifesto, we denounce the attention economy as inhumane and a threat to our sociopolitical and ecological well-being. We endorse policymakers' efforts to address the negative consequences of the attention economy's technology, but add that these approaches are often limited in their criticism of the systemic context of human attention. Starting from Buddhist philosophy, we advocate a broader approach: an ecology of attending, that centers on conceptualizing, designing, and using attention (1) in an embedded way and (2) focused on the alleviating of suffering. With 'embedded' we mean that attention is not a neutral, isolated mechanism but a meaning-engendering part of an 'ecology' of bodily, sociotechnical and moral frameworks. 39. Weak Bending of Light by Rotating Regular Black Holes with Asymptotically Minkowski Core using the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem

Abstract: In this paper, the weak gravitational lensing phenomenon for a recently proposed rotating regular black hole with an asymptotically Minkowski core characterized by a sub-Planckian curvature was investigated. Using the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem, the deflection of light in the weak limit was computed by taking the black hole as a lens at a finite distance from both the source and the observer. It was shown that the weak deflection angle slightly differs between the prograde and retrograde motion but both eventually converge to $0$ as $b$ increases. Moreover, the deflection angle correction for Kerr classical black hole and this sort of rotating regular black hole is a decreasing function for large values of $b$. It was also shown that the weak deflection angle for this sort of regular black hole is similar to Bardeen and Hayward black hole given its corresponding values for the parameters $x$ and $n$, Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. Abstract: Foundation models (FMs), large deep learning models pre-trained on vast, unlabeled datasets, exhibit powerful capabilities in understanding complex patterns and generating sophisticated outputs. However, they often struggle to adapt to specific tasks. Reinforcement learning (RL), which allows agents to learn through interaction and feedback, offers a compelling solution. Integrating RL with FMs enables these models to achieve desired outcomes and excel at particular tasks. Additionally, RL can be enhanced by leveraging the reasoning and generalization capabilities of FMs. This synergy is revolutionizing various fields, including robotics. FMs, rich in knowledge and generalization, provide robots with valuable information, while RL facilitates learning and adaptation through real-world interactions. This survey paper comprehensively explores this exciting intersection, examining how these paradigms can be integrated to advance robotic intelligence. We analyze the use of foundation models as action planners, the development of robotics-specific foundation models, and the mutual benefits of combining FMs with RL. Furthermore, we present a taxonomy of integration approaches, including large language models, vision-language models, diffusion models, and transformer-based RL models. We also explore how RL can utilize world representations learned from FMs to enhance robotic task execution. Our survey aims to synthesize current research and highlight key challenges in robotic reasoning and control, particularly in the context of integrating FMs and RL--two rapidly evolving technologies. By doing so, we seek to spark future research and emphasize critical areas that require further investigation to enhance robotics. 42. Effects of graph operations on star pairwise compatibility graphs

Abstract: A graph $G=(V,E)$ is defined as a star-$k$-PCG when it is possible to assign a positive real number weight $w$ to each vertex $V$, and define $k$ distinct intervals $I_1, I_2, \ldots I_k$, in such a way that there is an edge $uv$ in $E$ if and only if the sum of the weights of vertices $u$ and $v$ falls within the union of these intervals. The star-$k$-PCG class is connected to two significant categories of graphs, namely PCGs and multithreshold graphs. The star number of a graph $G$, is the smallest $k$ for which $G$ is a star-$k$-PCG. In this paper, we study the effects of various graph operations, such as the addition of twins, pendant vertices, universal vertices, or isolated vertices, on the star number of the graph resulting from these operations. As a direct application of our results, we determine the star number of lobster graphs and provide an upper bound for the star number of acyclic graphs.

Abstract: Current research in statistical mechanics mostly concerns the investigation of out-of-equilibrium, irreversible processes, which are ubiquitous in nature and still far from being theoretically understood. Even the precise characterization of irreversibility is the object of an open debate: while in the context of Hamiltonian systems the one-century-old proposal by M. Smoluchowski looks still valid (a process appears irreversible when the initial state has a recurrence time that is long compared to the time of observation [1]), in dissipative systems, particularly in the case of stochastic processes, the problem is more involved, and quantifying the "degree of irreversibility" is a pragmatic need. The most employed strategies rely on the estimation of entropy production: this quantity, although mathematically well-defined, is often difficult to compute, especially when analyzing experimental data. Moreover, being a global observable, entropy production fails to capture specific aspects of irreversibility in extended systems, such as the role of different currents and their spatial development. This review aims to address various conceptual and technical challenges encountered in the analysis of irreversibility, including the role of the coarse-graining procedure and the treatment of data in the absence of complete information. 44. Undecidability of the spectral gap in rotationally symmetric Hamiltonians

Abstract: The problem of determining the existence of a spectral gap in a lattice quantum spin system was previously shown to be undecidable for one [J. Bausch et al., "Undecidability of the spectral gap in one dimension", Physical Review X 10 (2020)] or more dimensions [T. S. Cubitt et al., "Undecidability of the spectral gap", Nature 528 (2015)]. In these works, families of nearest-neighbor interactions are constructed whose spectral gap depends on the outcome of a Turing machine Halting problem, therefore making it impossible for an algorithm to predict its existence. While these models are translationally invariant, they are not invariant under the other symmetries of the lattice, a property which is commonly found in physically relevant cases, posing the question of whether the spectral gap is still an undecidable problem for Hamiltonians with stronger symmetry constraints. 45. A Proposal for Uncovering Hidden Social Bots via Genetic Similarity

Abstract: Social media platforms face an ongoing challenge in combating the proliferation of social bots, automated accounts that are also known to distort public opinion and support the spread of disinformation. Over the years, social bots have evolved greatly, often becoming indistinguishable from real users, and more recently, families of bots have been identified that are powered by Large Language Models to produce content for posting. We suggest an idea to classify social users as bots or not using genetic similarity algorithms. These algorithms provide an adaptive method for analyzing user behavior, allowing for the continuous evolution of detection criteria in response to the ever-changing tactics of social bots. Our proposal involves an initial clustering of social users into distinct macro species based on the similarities of their timelines. Macro species are then classified as either bot or genuine based on genetic characteristics. The preliminary idea we present, once fully developed, will allow existing detection applications based on timeline equality alone to be extended to detect bots. Abstract: This study aims to enrich and leverage data from the Informatics Europe Higher Education (IEHE) data portal to extract and analyze trends in female participation in Informatics across Europe. The research examines the proportion of female students, first-year enrollments, and degrees awarded to women in the field. The issue of low female participation in Informatics has long been recognized as a persistent challenge and remains a critical area of scholarly inquiry. Furthermore, existing literature indicates that socio-economic factors can unpredictably influence female participation, complicating efforts to address the gender gap. The analysis focuses on participation data from research universities at various academic levels, including Bachelors, Masters, and PhD programs, and seeks to uncover potential correlations between female participation and geographical or economic zones. The dataset was first enriched by integrating additional information, such as each country's GDP and relevant geographical data, sourced from various online repositories. Subsequently, the data was cleaned to ensure consistency and eliminate incomplete time series. A final set of complete time series was selected for further analysis. We then used the data collected from the internet to assign countries to different clusters. Specifically, we employed Economic Zone, Geographical Area, and GDP quartile to cluster countries and compare their temporal trends both within and between clusters. We analyze the results for each classification and derive conclusions based on the available data.

47. Evolution of Ferromagnetism and Electrical Resistivity in Sb-Doped Cr4PtGa17

Abstract: We describe the doping effects on a metallic breathing pyrochlore compound, Cr4PtGa17. Upon doping with Sb, i.e., Cr4Pt(Ga1-xSbx)17, it was found that a selective doping on one of the seven Ga sites occurs. With increasing dopant level, the ferromagnetism in the parent compound is gradually suppressed, along with a decrease in fitted Curie-Weiss temperature (from 61 (1) K to -1.8 (1) K) and effective moment (from ~2.26 muB/f.u. to ~0.68 muB/f.u.). Low-temperature heat capacity measurements confirm the absence of magnetic ordering above 0.4 K for the three most doped samples. Meanwhile, electrical resistivity measurements display a metal-semiconductor transition with increasing Sb contents, which is attributed to an increase of Fermi energy based on the calculations of electronic band structure and density of states. Moreover, we have speculated that the ferromagnetism in Cr4PtGa17 is governed by itinerant electrons according to our observations. Abstract: In the search for stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds (SGWB) of cosmological origin with LISA, it is crucial to account for realistic complications in the noise and astrophysical foreground modeling that may impact the signal reconstruction. To address these challenges, we updated the $\texttt{SGWBinner}$ code to incorporate both variable noise levels across LISA arms and more complex foreground spectral shapes. Our findings suggest that, while moderate variations of the noise amplitudes have a minimal impact, poor foreground modeling (i.e., templates requiring many free parameters) significantly degrades the reconstruction of cosmological signals. This underlines the importance of accurate modeling and subtraction of the astrophysical foregrounds to characterize possible cosmological components. To perform this more challenging analysis, we have integrated the $\texttt{JAX}$ framework, which significantly improves the computational efficiency of the code, in the $\texttt{SGWBinner}$ code, enabling faster Bayesian likelihood sampling and more effective exploration of complex SGWB signals., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. 50. vCLIC: Towards Fast Interrupt Handling in Virtualized RISC-V Mixed-criticality Systems

Abstract: The widespread diffusion of compute-intensive edge-AI workloads and the stringent demands of modern autonomous systems require advanced heterogeneous embedded architectures. Such architectures must support high-performance and reliable execution of parallel tasks with different levels of criticality. Hardware-assisted virtualization is crucial for isolating applications concurrently executing these tasks under real-time constraints, but interrupt virtualization poses challenges in ensuring transparency to virtual guests while maintaining real-time system features, such as interrupt vectoring, nesting, and tail-chaining. Despite its rapid advancement to address virtualization needs for mixed-criticality systems, the RISC-V ecosystem still lacks interrupt controllers with integrated virtualization and real-time features, currently relying on non-deterministic, bus-mediated message-signaled interrupts (MSIs) for virtualization. To overcome this limitation, we present the design, implementation, and in-system assessment of vCLIC, a virtualization extension to the RISC-V CLIC fast interrupt controller. Our approach achieves 20x interrupt latency speed-up over the software emulation required for handling non-virtualization-aware systems, reduces response latency by 15% compared to existing MSI-based approaches, and is free from interference from the system bus, at an area cost of just 8kGE when synthesized in an advanced 16nm FinFet technology., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for presentation at the 42nd IEEE International Conference on Computer Design (ICCD 2024)
