Abstract

GRAMS (Gamma-Ray and AntiMatter Survey) is a next-generation balloon/satellite experiment utilizing a LArTPC (Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber), to simultaneously target astrophysical observations of cosmic MeV gamma-rays and conduct an indirect dark matter search using antimatter. While LArTPCs are widely used in particle physics experiments, they have never been operated at balloon altitudes. An engineering balloon flight with a small-scale LArTPC (eGRAMS) was conducted on July 27th, 2023, to establish a system for safely operating a LArTPC at balloon altitudes and to obtain cosmic-ray data from the LArTPC. The flight was launched from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) Taiki Aerospace Research Field in Hokkaido, Japan. The total flight duration was 3 hours and 12 minutes, including a level flight of 44 minutes at a maximum altitude of 28.9~km. The flight system was landed on the sea and successfully recovered. The LArTPC was successfully operated throughout the flight, and about 0.5 million events of the cosmic-ray data including muons, protons, and Compton scattering gamma-ray candidates, were collected. This pioneering flight demonstrates the feasibility of operating a LArTPC in high-altitude environments, paving the way for future GRAMS missions and advancing our capabilities in MeV gamma-ray astronomy and dark matter research.

Abstract

New tridimensional plasma structures, that are oscillatory and classified as non-separable ballooning modes, can emerge in inhomogeneous plasmas and undergo resonant mode-particle interactions, e.g., with a minority population, that can lead them to modify their spatial profiles. Thus, unlike the case of previously known ballooning modes their amplitudes are not separable functions of time and space. The relevant resonance conditions are intrinsically different from those of the well-known Landau conditions for (ordinary) plasma waves: they involve the mode geometry and affect different regions of the distribution in momentum space at different positions in configuration space. Abstract

Magnetic field configurations extending over macroscopic scale distances are shown to be generated in rarefied collisionless plasmas when non-thermal and spatially inhomogeneous electron distributions in phase space emerge. The analyzed representative case is where, in the presence of a significant spatial gradient of the electron pressure and of a sheared magnetic field configuration, an alternating magnetic field reconnection process can develop associated with the anisotropy of the fluctuating electron temperature. The relevant process is intrinsically different from that known as the Biermann Battery which does not involve magnetic reconnection and requires that the unperturbed spatial gradient of the (isotropic) electron temperature be misaligned relative to that of the density gradient., Comment: 17 pages

Abstract

Cosmic Microwave Background experiments need to measure polarization properties of the incoming radiation very accurately to achieve their scientific goals. As a result of that, it is necessary to properly characterize these instruments. However, there are not natural sources that can be used for this purpose. For this reason, we developed the PROTOtype CALibrator for Cosmology, PROTOCALC, which is a calibrator source designed for the 90 GHz band of these telescopes. This source is purely polarized and the direction of the polarization vector is known with an accuracy better than 0.1 deg. Abstract

In this work, we present the design and manufacturing of the two multi-mode antenna arrays of the COSMO experiment and the preliminary beam pattern measurements of their fundamental mode compared with simulations. COSMO is a cryogenic Martin-Puplett Fourier Transform Spectrometer that aims at measuring the isotropic y-type spectral distortion of the Cosmic Microwave Background from Antarctica, by performing differential measurements between the sky and an internal, cryogenic reference blackbody. To reduce the atmospheric contribution, a spinning wedge mirror performs fast sky-dips at varying elevations while fast, low-noise Kinetic Inductance detectors scan the interferogram. Two arrays of antennas couple the radiation to the detectors. Each array consists of nine smooth-walled multi-mode feed-horns, operating in the $120-180$ GHz and $210-300$ GHz range, respectively. The multi-mode propagation helps increase the instrumental sensitivity without employing large focal planes with hundreds of detectors. The two arrays have a step-linear and a linear profile, respectively, and are obtained by superimposing aluminum plates made with CNC milling. The simulated multi-mode beam pattern has a $\sim 20^{\circ} - 26^{\circ}$ FWHM for the low-frequency array and $\sim 16^{\circ}$ FWHM for the high-frequency one. The side lobes are below $-15$ dB. To characterize the antenna response, we measured the beam pattern of the fundamental mode using a Vector Network Analyzer, in far-field conditions inside an anechoic chamber at room temperature. We completed the measurements of the low-frequency array and found a good agreement with the simulations. We also identified a few non-idealities that we attribute to the measuring setup and will further investigate. Abstract

We explore the bound neutrons decay into invisible particles (e.g., $n\rightarrow 3 \nu$ or $nn \rightarrow 2 \nu$) in the JUNO liquid scintillator detector. The invisible decay includes two decay modes: $ n \rightarrow { inv} $ and $ nn \rightarrow { inv} $. The invisible decays of $s$-shell neutrons in $^{12}{\rm C}$ will leave a highly excited residual nucleus. Subsequently, some de-excitation modes of the excited residual nuclei can produce a time- and space-correlated triple coincidence signal in the JUNO detector. Based on a full Monte Carlo simulation informed with the latest available data, we estimate all backgrounds, including inverse beta decay events of the reactor antineutrino $\bar{\nu}_e$, natural radioactivity, cosmogenic isotopes and neutral current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. Pulse shape discrimination and multivariate analysis techniques are employed to further suppress backgrounds. With two years of exposure, JUNO is expected to give an order of magnitude improvement compared to the current best limits. Abstract

The Simons Observatory (SO) is a cosmic microwave background (CMB) survey experiment that includes small-aperture telescopes (SATs) observing from an altitude of 5,200 m in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The SO SATs will cover six spectral bands between 27 and 280 GHz to search for primordial B-modes to a sensitivity of $\sigma(r)=0.002$, with quantified systematic errors well below this value. Each SAT is a self-contained cryogenic telescope with a 35$^\circ$ field of view, 42 cm diameter optical aperture, 40 K half-wave plate, 1 K refractive optics, and $<0.1$ K focal plane that holds $>12,000$ TES detectors. We describe the nominal design of the SATs and present details about the integration and testing for one operating at 93 and 145 GHz.

Abstract

We study the effects due to mismatches in passbands, polarization angles, and temperature and polarization calibrations in the context of the upcoming cosmic microwave background experiment Simons Observatory (SO). Using the SO multi-frequency likelihood, we estimate the bias and the degradation of constraining power in cosmological and astrophysical foreground parameters assuming different levels of knowledge of the instrumental effects. We find that incorrect but reasonable assumptions about the values of all the systematics examined here can have significant effects on cosmological analyses, hence requiring marginalization approaches at the likelihood level. When doing so, we find that the most relevant effect is due to bandpass shifts. When marginalizing over them, the posteriors of parameters describing astrophysical microwave foregrounds (such as radio point sources or dust) get degraded, while cosmological parameters constraints are not significantly affected. Marginalization over polarization angles with up to 0.25$^\circ$ uncertainty causes an irrelevant bias $\lesssim 0.05 \sigma$ in all parameters. Marginalization over calibration factors in polarization broadens the constraints on the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom $N_\mathrm{eff}$ by a factor 1.2, interpreted here as a proxy parameter for non standard model physics targeted by high-resolution CMB measurements., Comment: 61 pages (27 of which are appendices), 26 figures, 12 tables. Abstract

We describe photometry improvements in the La Silla--Quest RR Lyrae star (RRLS) survey that enable it to reach distances from the Sun ($d_{\odot}$) $\sim 140$ kpc. We report the results of surveying $\sim 300~ {\rm deg}^2$ of sky around the large, low-surface-brightness Crater II dwarf spheroidal galaxy. At $d_{\odot}$ $> 80$ kpc, we find a large overdensity of RRLS that extends beyond the traditional isophotal contours used for Crater II. The majority of these RRLS (34) have a linear distribution on the sky, extending over $15^{\circ}$, that runs through Crater II and is oriented along Crater II's proper motion vector. We hypothesize that this unlikely distribution traces extended tidal streams associated with Crater II. To test this, we search for other Crater II stellar populations that should be in the streams. Using Gaia proper motion data, we isolate $\approx$ 17 candidate stars outside of Crater II that are consistent with being luminous stars from the Crater II Red Giant Branch (RGB). Their spatial distribution is consistent with the RRLS one. The inferred streams are long, spanning a distance range $\sim 80 - 135$ kpc from the Galactic Centre. They are oriented at a relatively small angle relative to our line-of-sight ($\sim 25^{\circ}$), which means some stream stars are likely projected onto the main body of the galaxy. Abstract

Sensitive wide-field observations of polarized thermal emission from interstellar dust grains will allow astronomers to address key outstanding questions about the life cycle of matter and energy driving the formation of stars and the evolution of galaxies. Stratospheric balloon-borne telescopes can map this polarized emission at far-infrared wavelengths near the peak of the dust thermal spectrum - wavelengths that are inaccessible from the ground. In this paper we address the sensitivity achievable by a Super Pressure Balloon (SPB) polarimetry mission, using as an example the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST) Observatory. By launching from Wanaka, New Zealand, BLAST Observatory can obtain a 30-day flight with excellent sky coverage - overcoming limitations of past experiments that suffered from short flight duration and/or launch sites with poor coverage of nearby star-forming regions. This proposed polarimetry mission will map large regions of the sky at sub-arcminute resolution, with simultaneous observations at 175, 250, and 350 $\mu m$, using a total of 8274 microwave kinetic inductance detectors. Here, we describe the scientific motivation for the BLAST Observatory, the proposed implementation, and the forecasting methods used to predict its sensitivity. 12. Education in Emergency: Lessons Learned about School Management Practices and Digital Technologies

Abstract

In a period strongly marked by constraints and abrupt societal changes, school leaders had to manage the pandemic crisis, guide changes, and find new solutions to respond to the demands of increasingly digitalised schools. In this context, a study was carried out to identify the main challenges faced by school leaders in Portugal and how digital technologies (DTs) were used by school leaders to address those challenges. From the methodological point of view, a questionnaire with closed and open questions on DTs during the COVID-19 pandemic was submitted to Portuguese school leaders between November 2020 and March 2021. Based on a descriptive statistical analysis of the closed questions and the content analysis of the open answers of 145 school leaders, the results point to aspects related to lack of training, lack of resources, widening inequalities and communication issues. The DTs are the same as used before. However, these technologies were used more frequently. These findings imply the need to invest in continuous training for school leaders in managing crises, how to optimise the use of DT in schools; and to capitalise on internal and external partnerships in collaborative efforts and to network to overcome the lack of resources, social needs, and inequalities. The lessons learned during the process of finding and evaluating solutions can contribute to improving school management processes in crises, in a post-pandemic future.

Abstract

The hard X-ray emission in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and black hole X-ray binaries is thought to be produced by a hot cloud of electrons referred to as the corona. This emission, commonly described by a power law with a high-energy cutoff, is suggestive of Comptonization by thermal electrons. While several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the origin, geometry, and composition of the corona, we still lack a clear understanding of this fundamental component. NuSTAR has been playing a key role improving our knowledge of X-ray coronae thanks to its unprecedented sensitivity above 10 keV. However, these constraints are limited to bright, nearby sources. The High Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) is a probe-class mission concept combining high spatial resolution X-ray imaging and broad spectral coverage (0.2-80 keV) with a sensitivity superior to current facilities. In this paper, we highlight the major role that HEX-P will play in further advancing our insights of X-ray coronae, notably in AGN. We demonstrate how HEX-P will measure key properties and track the temporal evolution of coronae in unobscured AGN. This will allow us to determine their electron distribution and test the dominant emission mechanisms. Furthermore, we show how HEX-P will accurately estimate the coronal properties of obscured AGN in the local Universe, helping address fundamental questions about AGN unification. In addition, HEX-P will characterize coronae in a large sample of luminous quasars at cosmological redshifts for the first time and track the evolution of coronae in transient systems in real time. We also demonstrate how HEX-P will enable estimating the coronal geometry using spectral-timing techniques. Abstract

A fraction of the active supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies in our Universe are capable of launching extreme kiloparsec-long relativistic jets. These jets are known multiband (radio to $\gamma$-ray) and multimessenger (neutrino) emitters, and some of them have been monitored over several decades at all accessible wavelengths. However, many open questions remain unanswered about the processes powering these highly energetic phenomena. These jets intrinsically produce soft-to-hard X-ray emission that extends from $E\sim0.1\,\rm keV$ up to $E>100\,\rm keV$. Simultaneous broadband X-ray coverage, combined with excellent timing and imaging capabilities, is required to uncover the physics of jets. Indeed, truly simultaneous soft-to-hard X-ray coverage, in synergy with current and upcoming high-energy facilities (such as IXPE, COSI, CTAO, etc.) and neutrino detectors (e.g., IceCube), would enable us to disentangle the particle population responsible for the high-energy radiation from these jets. A sensitive hard X-ray survey ($F_{8-24\,\rm keV}<10^{-15}\,\rm erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}$) could unveil the bulk of their population in the early Universe. Acceleration and radiative processes responsible for the majority of their X-ray emission would be pinned down by microsecond timing capabilities at both soft and hard X-rays. Furthermore, imaging jet structures for the first time in the hard X-ray regime could unravel the origin of their high-energy emission. The proposed Probe-class mission concept High Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) combines all these required capabilities, making it the crucial next-generation X-ray telescope in the multi-messenger, time-domain era. Abstract

Constraining the primary growth channel of supermassive black holes (SMBH) remains one the most actively debated questions in the context of cosmological structure formation. Owing to the expected connection between SMBH spin parameter evolution and the accretion and merger history of individual black holes, population spin measurements offer a rare observational window into the SMBH cosmic growth. As of today, the most common method for estimating SMBH spin relies on modeling the relativistically broaden atomic profiles in the reflection spectrum observed in X-rays. In this paper, we study the observational requirements needed to confidently distinguish between the primary SMBH growth channels, based on their distinct spin-mass distributions predicted by the Horizon-AGN cosmological simulation. In doing so, we characterize outstanding limitations associated with the existing measurements and discuss the landscape of future observational campaigns, which can be planned and executed with future X-ray observatories. Abstract

The core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is considered one of the most energetic astrophysical events in the universe. The early and prompt detection of neutrinos before (pre-SN) and during the supernova (SN) burst presents a unique opportunity for multi-messenger observations of CCSN events. In this study, we describe the monitoring concept and present the sensitivity of the system to pre-SN and SN neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector currently under construction in South China. The real-time monitoring system is designed to ensure both prompt alert speed and comprehensive coverage of progenitor stars. It incorporates prompt monitors on the electronic board as well as online monitors at the data acquisition stage. Assuming a false alert rate of 1 per year, this monitoring system exhibits sensitivity to pre-SN neutrinos up to a distance of approximately 1.6 (0.9) kiloparsecs and SN neutrinos up to about 370 (360) kiloparsecs for a progenitor mass of 30 solar masses, considering both normal and inverted mass ordering scenarios. The pointing ability of the CCSN is evaluated by analyzing the accumulated event anisotropy of inverse beta decay interactions from pre-SN or SN neutrinos. Abstract

De-excitation gamma-ray lines, produced by nuclei colliding with protons, provide information about astrophysical environments where particles have kinetic energies of $10-100$ MeV per nucleon. In general, such environments can be categorized into two types: the interaction between non-thermal MeV cosmic rays and ambient gas, and the other is thermal plasma with a temperature above a few MeV. In this paper, we focus on the latter type and investigate the production of de-excitation gamma-ray lines in very hot thermal plasma, especially the dependence of the line profile on the plasma temperature. We have calculated the line profile of prompt gamma rays from $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O and found that when nuclei have a higher temperature than protons, gamma-ray line profiles can have a complex shape unique to each nucleus species. This is caused by anisotropic gamma-ray emission in the nucleus rest frame. We propose that the spectroscopy of nuclear de-excitation gamma-ray lines may enable to probe energy distribution in very hot astrophysical plasmas. Abstract

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Early diagnosis of aortic stenosis (AS) is critical to prevent morbidity and mortality but requires skilled examination with Doppler imaging. This study reports the development and validation of a novel deep learning model that relies on two-dimensional (2D) parasternal long axis videos from transthoracic echocardiography without Doppler imaging to identify severe AS, suitable for point-of-care ultrasonography. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a training set of 5257 studies (17 570 videos) from 2016 to 2020 [Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH), Connecticut], an ensemble of three-dimensional convolutional neural networks was developed to detect severe AS, leveraging self-supervised contrastive pretraining for label-efficient model development. This deep learning model was validated in a temporally distinct set of 2040 consecutive studies from 2021 from YNHH as well as two geographically distinct cohorts of 4226 and 3072 studies, from California and other hospitals in New England, respectively. The deep learning model achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.978 (95% CI: 0.966, 0.988) for detecting severe AS in the temporally distinct test set, maintaining its diagnostic performance in geographically distinct cohorts [0.952 AUROC (95% CI: 0.941, 0.963) in California and 0.942 AUROC (95% CI: 0.909, 0.966) in New England]. The model was interpretable with saliency maps identifying the aortic valve, mitral annulus, and left atrium as the predictive regions. Among non-severe AS cases, predicted probabilities were associated with worse quantitative metrics of AS suggesting an association with various stages of AS severity. CONCLUSION: This study developed and externally validated an automated approach for severe AS detection using single-view 2D echocardiography, with potential utility for point-of-care screening.

Abstract Introduction Eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties are commonly reported morbidities for individuals born with OA/TOF. This study aimed to determine the nature and prevalence of eating, drinking and oro-pharyngeal swallowing difficulties reported in this population. Method A systematic review and meta-proportional analysis were conducted (PROSPERO: CRD42020207263). MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science databases and grey literature were searched. Quantitative and qualitative data were extracted relating to swallow impairment, use of mealtime adaptations and eating and drinking-related quality of life. Quantitative data were summarised using narrative and meta-proportional analysis methods. Qualitative data were synthesised using a meta-aggregation approach. Where quantitative and qualitative data described the same phenomenon, a convergent segregated approach was used to synthesise data. Results Sixty-five studies were included. Six oro-pharyngeal swallow characteristics were identified, and pooled prevalence calculated: aspiration (24%), laryngeal penetration (6%), oral stage dysfunction (11%), pharyngeal residue (13%), nasal regurgitation (7%), delayed swallow initiation (31%). Four patient-reported eating/drinking difficulties were identified, and pooled prevalence calculated: difficulty swallowing solids (45%), difficulty swallowing liquids (6%), odynophagia (30%), coughing when eating (38%). Three patient-reported mealtime adaptations were identified, and pooled prevalence calculated: need for water when eating (49%), eating slowly (37%), modifying textures (28%). Mixed methods synthesis of psychosocial impacts identified 34% of parents experienced mealtime anxiety and 25% report challenging mealtime behaviours reflected in five qualitative themes: fear and trauma associated with eating and drinking, isolation and a lack of support, being aware and grateful, support to cope and loss. Conclusions Eating and drinking difficulties are common in adults and children with repaired OA/TOF. Oro-pharyngeal swallowing difficulties may be more prevalent than previously reported. Eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties can impact on psychological well-being and quality of life, for the individual and parents/family members. Long-term, multi-disciplinary follow-up is warranted.

Abstract

We use time-domain simulations of Jupiter observations to test and develop a beam reconstruction pipeline for the Simons Observatory Small Aperture Telescopes. The method relies on a map maker that estimates and subtracts correlated atmospheric noise and a beam fitting code designed to compensate for the bias caused by the map maker. We test our reconstruction performance for four different frequency bands against various algorithmic parameters, atmospheric conditions and input beams. We additionally show the reconstruction quality as function of the number of available observations and investigate how different calibration strategies affect the beam uncertainty. For all of the cases considered, we find good agreement between the fitted results and the input beam model within a ~1.5% error for a multipole range l = 30 - 700 and an ~0.5% error for a multipole range l = 50 - 200. We conclude by using a harmonic-domain component separation algorithm to verify that the beam reconstruction errors and biases observed in our analysis do not significantly bias the Simons Observatory r-measurement., Comment: 23 pages, 21 figures, published in ApJ

Abstract

We present a variability, color and morphology based classifier, designed to identify transients, persistently variable, and non-variable sources, from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) Data Release 11 (DR11) light curves of extended and point sources. The main motivation to develop this model was to identify active galactic nuclei (AGN) at different redshift ranges to be observed by the 4MOST ChANGES project. Still, it serves as a more general time-domain astronomy study. The model uses nine colors computed from CatWISE and PS1, a morphology score from PS1, and 61 single-band variability features computed from the ZTF DR11 g and r light curves. We trained two versions of the model, one for each ZTF band. We used a hierarchical local classifier per parent node approach, where each node was composed of a balanced random forest model. We adopted a 17-class taxonomy, including non-variable stars and galaxies, three transient classes, five classes of stochastic variables, and seven classes of periodic variables. The macro averaged precision, recall and F1-score are 0.61, 0.75, and 0.62 for the g-band model, and 0.60, 0.74, and 0.61, for the r-band model. When grouping the four AGN classes into one single class, its precision, recall, and F1-score are 1.00, 0.95, and 0.97, respectively, for both the g and r bands. We applied the model to all the sources in the ZTF/4MOST overlapping sky, avoiding ZTF fields covering the Galactic bulge, including 86,576,577 light curves in the g-band and 140,409,824 in the r-band. Only 0.73\% of the g-band light curves and 2.62\% of the r-band light curves were classified as stochastic, periodic, or transient with high probability ($P_{init}\geq0.9$). We found that, in general, more reliable results are obtained when using the g-band model. Abstract

The main task of the Top Tracker detector of the neutrino reactor experiment Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is to reconstruct and extrapolate atmospheric muon tracks down to the central detector. This muon tracker will help to evaluate the contribution of the cosmogenic background to the signal. The Top Tracker is located above JUNO's water Cherenkov Detector and Central Detector, covering about 60% of the surface above them. The JUNO Top Tracker is constituted by the decommissioned OPERA experiment Target Tracker modules. The technology used consists in walls of two planes of plastic scintillator strips, one per transverse direction. Wavelength shifting fibres collect the light signal emitted by the scintillator strips and guide it to both ends where it is read by multianode photomultiplier tubes. Compared to the OPERA Target Tracker, the JUNO Top Tracker uses new electronics able to cope with the high rate produced by the high rock radioactivity compared to the one in Gran Sasso underground laboratory. Abstract

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), the first multi-kton liquid scintillator detector, which is under construction in China, will have a unique potential to perform a real-time measurement of solar neutrinos well below the few MeV threshold typical for Water Cherenkov detectors. JUNO's large target mass and excellent energy resolution are prerequisites for reaching unprecedented levels of precision. In this paper, we provide estimation of the JUNO sensitivity to 7Be, pep, and CNO solar neutrinos that can be obtained via a spectral analysis above the 0.45 MeV threshold. This study is performed assuming different scenarios of the liquid scintillator radiopurity, ranging from the most opti mistic one corresponding to the radiopurity levels obtained by the Borexino experiment, up to the minimum requirements needed to perform the neutrino mass ordering determination with reactor antineutrinos - the main goal of JUNO. Our study shows that in most scenarios, JUNO will be able to improve the current best measurements on 7Be, pep, and CNO solar neutrino fluxes. We also perform a study on the JUNO capability to detect periodical time variations in the solar neutrino flux, such as the day-night modulation induced by neutrino flavor regeneration in Earth, and the modulations induced by temperature changes driven by helioseismic waves.

Abstract

We measure the polarization fraction of a sample of $6282$ Galactic cold clumps at $353 \, \mathrm{GHz} $, consisting of $Planck$ Galactic cold clump (PGCC) catalogue category 1 objects (flux densities measured with signal-to-noise ratio $(\mathrm{S/N}) > 4$). We find the mean-squared polarization fraction at $353 \, \mathrm{GHz} $ to be $ \langle \Pi ^ 2 \rangle = [ 4.79 \pm 0.44 ] \times 10 ^ {-4} $ equating to an $ 11 \, \sigma $ detection of polarization. We test if the polarization fraction depends on the clumps' physical properties, including flux density, luminosity, Galactic latitude and physical distance. We see a trend towards increasing polarization fraction with increasing Galactic latitude, but find no evidence that polarization depends on the other tested properties. The Simons Observatory, with an angular resolution of order $1 \, \mathrm{arcmin } $ and noise levels between $22$ and $54$ $ \mu \mathrm{ K-arcmin } $ at high frequencies, will substantially enhance our ability to determine the magnetic field structure in Galactic cold clumps. At $\ge5\,\sigma$ significance, we predict the Simons Observatory will detect at least $\sim12,000$ cold clumps in intensity and $\sim430$ cold clumps in polarization. This number of polarization detections would represent a two orders of magnitude increase over the current $Planck$ results. Abstract

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a large neutrino detector currently under construction in China. Thanks to the tight requirements on its optical and radio-purity properties, it will be able to perform leading measurements detecting terrestrial and astrophysical neutrinos in a wide energy range from tens of keV to hundreds of MeV. A key requirement for the success of the experiment is an unprecedented 3% energy resolution, guaranteed by its large active mass (20 kton) and the use of more than 20,000 20-inch photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs) acquired by high-speed, high-resolution sampling electronics located very close to the PMTs. As the Front-End and Read-Out electronics is expected to continuously run underwater for 30 years, a reliable readout acquisition system capable of handling the timestamped data stream coming from the Large-PMTs and permitting to simultaneously monitor and operate remotely the inaccessible electronics had to be developed. In this contribution, the firmware and hardware implementation of the IPbus based readout protocol will be presented, together with the performances measured on final modules during the mass production of the electronics.

Abstract

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multi-purpose, large size, liquid scintillator experiment under construction in China. JUNO will perform leading measurements detecting neutrinos from different sources (reactor, terrestrial and astrophysical neutrinos) covering a wide energy range (from 200 keV to several GeV). This paper focuses on the design and development of a test protocol for the 20-inch PMT underwater readout electronics, performed in parallel to the mass production line. In a time period of about ten months, a total number of 6950 electronic boards were tested with an acceptance yield of 99.1%.

33. High pressure bulk synthesis of InN by solid state reaction of binary oxide in a multi-anvil apparatus

Abstract

We present a new method to synthesize bulk indium nitride by means of a simple solid-state chemical reaction carried out under hydrostatic high pressure/high temperature conditions in a multi-anvil apparatus, not involving gases or solvents during the process. The reaction occurs between the binary oxide $In_2O_3$ and the highly reactive $Li_3N$ as nitrogen source, in powder form. The formation of the hexagonal phase of InN, occurring at 350 {\deg}C and P $\geq$ 3 GPa, was successfully confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, with the presence of $Li_2O$ as unique byproduct. A simple washing process in weak acidic solution followed by centrifugation, allowed to obtain pure InN polycrystalline powders as precipitate. With an analogous procedure it was possible to obtain pure bulk GaN, from $Ga_2O_3$ and $Li_3N$ at T $\geq$ 600{\deg}C and P $\geq$ 2.5 GPa. These results point out, particularly for InN, a clean, and innovative way to produce significant quantities of one of the most promising nitrides in the field of electronics and energy technologies., Comment: Under revision in a peer-review journal

Abstract

This study presents the validity evidence based on internal structure gathered from the application of a pilot instrument to assess the scientific literacy of students at the end of the 3rd cycle of basic education. The instrument, composed of the subtests nature of science, impact of science and technology on society and content of science, was applied to 176 students in the 10th grade from eight Portuguese schools. Evidence was gathered using the Item Response Theory information function. The analysis revealed that the three subtests show evidence of validity based on internal structure that makes it possible to use the results for decision making. Nevertheless, it was found to be necessary to revise the items of the content of science subtest in order for them to better fit the characteristics of the sample.

The PB2-A is the first of three telescopes in the Simon Array (SA), which is an array of three cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization sensitive telescopes located at the POLARBEAR (PB) site in Northern Chile. As the successor to the PB experiment, each telescope and receiver combination is named as PB2-A, PB2-B, and PB2-C. PB2-A and -B will have nearly identical receivers operating at 90 and 150 GHz while PB2-C will house a receiver operating at 220 and 270 GHz. Each receiver contains a focal plane consisting of seven close-hex packed lenslet coupled sinuous antenna transition edge sensor bolometer arrays. Each array contains 271 di-chroic optical pixels each of which have four TES bolometers for a total of 7588 detectors per receiver. We have produced a set of two types of candidate arrays for PB2-A. The first we call Version 11 (V11) and uses a silicon oxide (SiOx) for the transmission lines and cross-over process for orthogonal polarizations. The second we call Version 13 (V13) and uses silicon nitride (SiNx) for the transmission lines and cross-under process for orthogonal polarizations. We have produced enough of each type of array to fully populate the focal plane of the PB2-A receiver. The average wirebond yield for V11 and V13 arrays is 93.2% and 95.6% respectively. The V11 arrays had a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 452 +/- 15 mK, a normal resistance (Rn) of 1.25 +/- 0.20 Ohms, and saturations powers of 5.2 +/- 1.0 pW and 13 +/- 1.2 pW for the 90 and 150 GHz bands respectively. The V13 arrays had a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 456 +/-6 mK, a normal resistance (Rn) of 1.1 +/- 0.2 Ohms, and saturations powers of 10.8 +/- 1.8 pW and 22.9 +/- 2.6 pW for the 90 and 150 GHz bands respectively.

Abstract

A fraction of the active supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies in our Universe are capable of launching extreme kiloparsec-long relativistic jets. These jets are known multiband (radio to γ-ray) and multimessenger (neutrino) emitters, and some of them have been monitored over decades at all accessible wavelengths. However, several open questions remain unanswered about the processes powering these highly energetic phenomena. These jets intrinsically produce soft-to-hard X-ray emission that extends from E>0.1keV up to E>100keV, and simultaneous broadband X-ray coverage, combined with excellent timing and imaging capabilities, is required to uncover the physics of jets. Indeed, truly simultaneous soft-to-hard X-ray coverage, in synergy with current and upcoming high-energy facilities (such as IXPE, COSI, CTAO, etc.) and neutrino detectors (e.g., IceCube), would enable us to disentangle the particle population responsible for the high-energy radiation from these jets. Aiming to assess the scientific literacy level of Portuguese 9th grade students and analyse whether the variables sex, liking for the subjects of Natural Sciences and Physical-Chemistry, failure in these subjects, school socio-economic context and course option were associated to the students’ scientific literacy levels, we applied the Avaliação da Literacia Científica Essencial (ALCE) instrument to 516 students. Overall, the results showed that the majority of students were at the moderate level and that 64.1% were scientifically literate. Analysing by subtest, we found that in the Nature of Science (NOS) and Impact of Science and Technology on Society (ISTS) subtests, the majority of students were at the moderate level and in the Content of Science (CS) subtest, the majority were at the low level of scientific literacy; whereas 70.0, 72.9, and 39.9% of students were classified as scientifically literate in the NOS, ISTS and CS subtests, respectively. The greatest difficulties were concentrated in the CS subtest, particularly in Biology, Physics and Chemistry. The analysis according to the independent variables shows that the students’ scientific literacy level might be associated with their liking for the subjects of Natural Sciences and Physical-Chemistry and their expectations regarding the profession they wish to pursue in the future.

Abstract

In 1991, the World Health Organization launched the European Network of Health Promoting Schools. Subsequently, in 2017, the Schools for Health in Europe (SHE) was created with the aim of improving the health of children and young people in Europe through a specific focus on schools. Several European countries are part of this network and have created the health promoting schools’ approach to implement structured and systematic health promotion plans in schools. SHE monitors the implementation of school health in member countries, producing a report that includes those countries’ data. This article presents an analysis of the latest 2020 monitoring reports from 14 European Union countries. The study used a qualitative approach through the documentary analysis technique. The analysis concludes that although many schools in the European Union are health promoting, not all of them follow the health education approach in planning their activities. The main topics addressed are physical activity, ex aequo with healthy eating. It is possible to identify the main facilitator of health promotion in schools: intersectoral collaboration between the health and education sectors. Finally, the main barrier to the implementation of health promotion is the feeling of overload expressed by the teachers.

Abstract

Mod-Cam is a first light and commissioning instrument for the CCAT-prime project's six-meter aperture Fred Young Submillimeter Telescope (FYST), currently under construction at 5600 m on Cerro Chajnantor in Chile's Atacama Desert. Prime-Cam, a first-generation science instrument for FYST, will deliver over ten times greater mapping speed than current and near-term facilities for unprecedented 280-850 GHz broadband and spectroscopic measurements with microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs). CCAT-prime will address a suite of science goals, from Big Bang cosmology to star formation and galaxy evolution over cosmic time. Mod-Cam deployment on FYST with a 280 GHz instrument module containing MKID arrays is planned for early science observations in 2024. Mod-Cam will be used to test instrument modules for Prime-Cam, which can house up to seven instrument modules. We discuss the design and status of the 0.9 m diameter, 1.8 m long Mod-Cam receiver and 40 cm diameter 280 GHz instrument module, with cold stages at 40 K, 4 K, 1 K, and 100 mK. Abstract

The Simons Observatory (SO) is a ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) survey experiment that consists of three 0.5 m small-aperture telescopes (SATs) and one 6 m large-aperture telescope (LAT), sited at an elevation of 5200 m in the Atacama Desert in Chile. In order to meet the sensitivity requirements set for next-generation CMB telescopes, the LAT will deploy 30,000 transition edge sensor (TES) detectors at 100 mK across 7 optics tubes (OT), all within the Large Aperture Telescope Receiver (LATR). Additionally, the LATR has the capability to expand to 62,000 TES across 13 OTs. The LAT will be capable of making arcminute-resolution observations of the CMB, with detector bands centered at 30, 40, 90, 150, 230, and 280 GHz. We have rigorously tested the LATR systems prior to deployment in order to fully characterize the instrument and show that it can achieve the desired sensitivity levels. We show that the LATR meets cryogenic and mechanical requirements, and maintains acceptably low baseline readout noise.

Abstract

Cosmic Microwave Background experiments need to measure polarization properties of the incoming radiation very accurately to achieve their scientific goals. As a result of that, it is necessary to properly characterize these instruments. However, there are not natural sources that can be used for this purpose. For this reason, we developed the PROTOtype CALibrator for Cosmology, PROTOCALC, which is a calibrator source designed for the 90GHz band of these telescopes. This source is purely polarized and the direction of the polarization vector is known with an accuracy better than 0.1deg. Abstract

We present near-field radio holography measurements of the Simons Observatory Large Aperture Telescope Receiver optics. These measurements demonstrate that radio holography of complex millimeter-wave optical systems comprising cryogenic lenses, filters, and feed horns can provide detailed characterization of wave propagation before deployment. We used the measured amplitude and phase, at 4K, of the receiver near-field beam pattern to predict two key performance parameters: 1) the amount of scattered light that will spill past the telescope to 300K and 2) the beam pattern expected from the receiver when fielded on the telescope. These cryogenic measurements informed the removal of a filter, which led to improved optical efficiency and reduced side-lobes at the exit of the receiver. Holography measurements of this system suggest that the spilled power past the telescope mirrors will be less than 1\% and the main beam with its near side-lobes are consistent with the nominal telescope design. This is the first time such parameters have been confirmed in the lab prior to deployment of a new receiver. This approach is broadly applicable to millimeter and sub-millimeter instruments.

Introdução: O futsal é uma modalidade esportiva que vem se expandindo constantemente e é praticado em mais de 120 países, seja ele no âmbito de rendimento, educacional ou de lazer. O futsal é uma modalidade de forte marcação, passes rápidos, frequentes situações de superioridade/inferioridade e igualdade numérica e incessante movimentação com e sem a posse de bola. Objetivo: o objetivo do estudo foi verificar e analisar os efeitos de 36 sessões do protocolo HIIT Tabata no consumo máximo de oxigênio em jogadores de futsal. Materiais e Métodos: A amostra foi de 61 jogadores de futsal do sexo masculino, com idade entre 15 e 35 anos, divididos sub-20 e adultos com grupo controle (n=16) e intervenção (n=45). Foram incluídos na pesquisa os indivíduos jogadores de futsal a no mínimo 6 meses, e frequentando os treinos da equipe e que tinham idade entre 15 e 35 anos. Os indivíduos realizaram o protocolo HIIT Tabata (20:10) durante 4 minutos com frequência de três vezes semanal durante 12 semanas. Análise estatística: Dados descritivos média e desvio padrão foram utilizados, assim com teste de Shapiro-wilk foi utilizado para normalidade dos dados, ANOVA fatorial mista foi utilizada para estatística inferencial. Resultados e discussão: Houve ganhos significativos no VO2máx dos indivíduos das categorias sub-20 (p=0,00) e adulta (p=0,05) do grupo intervenção, não houve resultados significativos no VO2máx para ambas as categorias do grupo controle. Conclusão: Os resultados indicam que as 36 sessões de treinamento do protocolo HIIT Tabata, foram capazes de melhorar o consumo máximo de oxigênio em jogadores de futsal.

47. Nurses' Perception of Facilitators and Barriers to the Community College Faculty Role

Abstract

There is an increased nursing faculty shortage throughout the United States (U.S.) which can have a significant impact on student enrollment in nursing programs. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study, which was guided by Herzberg's two-factor theory, was to explore perceptions of nursing faculty about their role in community college associate degree nursing (ADN) programs in the western U.S. Data were collected via in-depth semi-structured interviews with 14 nurse educators to gain insights regarding experiences with role transition, work expectations, and plans in academia. Transcribed interview data were thematically analyzed to reveal seven overarching themes which were motivation, role expectations, benefits, job satisfaction, challenges, job dissatisfaction, and career plans. This study involved identifying significant factors that contributed to job satisfaction and dissatisfaction among nurse educators. Implications for nursing education include integrating mentoring for newly hired faculty, increasing support for ongoing educational training, focused changes with fair compensation, encouragement of autonomy, support, and realistic workloads. Future studies should be attempted on a national level to gather data from nursing faculty working in community colleges across the U.S. Encouraging college administrators and nursing leaders to implement supportive adjustments in academia that encourage nurse faculty to enter and stay in teaching roles in order to increase the number of new nurses who are graduating during a time of critical need in the U.S. healthcare system may lead to positive social change. Abstract

The quest to decarbonize the lime and cement industry is challenging because of the amount and the nature of the CO2 emissions. The process emissions from calcination are unavoidable unless carbon capture is deployed. Nevertheless, the majority of the available carbon capture technologies are expensive and energy inefficient. The indirectly heated carbonate looping (IHCaL) process is a promising technology to capture CO2 from the lime and cement production, featuring low penalties in terms of economics and energy utilization. Previous works have highlighted the potential of the IHCaL, but the optimization of the process has not been discussed in enough detail and techno-economic implications are not yet fully understood. Within this work, ten scenarios using IHCaL technology to capture CO2 from a lime plant were simulated. Hereby, different process configurations, heat recovery strategies and fueling options were computed. The calculations for the capture facilities were performed with Aspen Plus® software and EBSILON®Professional was used to simulate the steam cycles. A techno-economic assessment was included as well, aided by the ECLIPSE software.The results demonstrate that the selection of the fuel for the combustor not only affects the CO2 balance and energy performance but is also an important cost driver —there were considerable economic advantages for the computed cases with middle-caloric solid recovered fuel (SRF). The analysis shows how the heat recovery strategy can be optimized to achieve tailored outcomes, such as reduced fuel requirement or increased power production. The specific primary energy consumption (from −0.3 to +2.5 MJLHV/tCO2,av) and cost for CO2 avoided (from −11 to +25 €/tCO2,av) using SRF are considerably low, compared with other technologies for the same application. The sensitivity study revealed that the main parameters that impact the economics are the discount rate and the project life. The capture plants are more sensitive to parameter changes than the reference plant, and the plants using SRF are more sensitive than the lignite-fueled plants. The conclusions from this work open a new pathway of experimental research to validate key assumptions and enable the industrial deployment of IHCaL technology before 2030.

Isso não significa a apresentação de uma metodologia bem-acabada e eficaz contra os efeitos dos algoritmos, mas o esboço de uma ou outra atitude pedagógica que nos parece capaz de, da perspectiva da relação educador-educando, oferecer aos estudantes uma experiência diversa daquela vivida nas plataformas digitais. Para tanto, organizamo-nos em três momentos. No primeiro, sugerimos certa imagem do aprender que se volta à saída de si, à errância, ao abandono de certezas demasiado fixas sobre o mundo e sobre o próprio indivíduo. No segundo, são o funcionamento dos algoritmos digitais e os seus efeitos na subjetividade que entram em cena. Por fim, recorremos à narração de uma experiência particular e à construção de sentidos com base nessa experiência para dar a ver uma disposição pedagógica que, em nosso entendimento, faz frente à lógica das redes.

Abstract

The prototype Schwarzschild-Couder Telescope (pSCT) is a candidate for a medium-sized telescope in the Cherenkov Telescope Array. The pSCT is based on a novel dual mirror optics design which reduces the plate scale and allows for the use of silicon photomultipliers as photodetectors. The prototype pSCT camera currently has only the central sector instrumented with 25 camera modules (1600 pixels), providing a 2.68$^{\circ}$ field of view (FoV). The camera electronics are based on custom TARGET (TeV array readout with GSa/s sampling and event trigger) application specific integrated circuits. Field programmable gate arrays sample incoming signals at a gigasample per second. A single backplane provides camera-wide triggers. An upgrade of the pSCT camera is in progress, which will fully populate the focal plane. This will increase the number of pixels to 11,328, the number of backplanes to 9, and the FoV to 8.04$^{\circ}$. Here we give a detailed description of the pSCT camera, including the basic concept, mechanical design, detectors, electronics, current status and first light.
