The paper examines how individual motivations, the role of the supervisor and gender influence the early career path of doctorate holders. We investigate PhD graduates' occupational outcomes beyond academia in the framework of current literature on the oversupply of PhD holders and labor market constraints. Our analysis relies on two unique datasets. The first, at the national level, includes microdata from the Italian National Institute of Statistics regarding about 41,000 graduates who account for over 70% of the population of 6 cohorts surveyed for the period 2004-2014. The other dataset is from a single university, and resulted from an original survey of 760 PhD holders who earned their doctorates from the University of Turin in 2007-2017. We find that PhD holders' motivation towards science is associated with their subsequent employment in academia or in other research and non-research jobs. Sponsoring support in early career and the supervisor's propensity for basic research also play a role in the future academic career path. Gender differences in type of occupation, however, continue to persist even taking motivations and the supervisor's role into account.

Abstract Nowadays the phenomenon of global warming is unequivocal, as confirmed by the latest reports of the IPCC and studies of the climate-change impacts on ecosystems, global economy, and populations. The effect of climate change on groundwater is a very relevant task especially for regions dependent chiefly on groundwater availability, as for the southern Italy. In such a territorial framework, to achieve a detailed hydro-climatological characterization, an Ensemble of 15 RCMs (E15) derived from the EURO-CORDEX project was analyzed considering two IPCC Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). The E15 was calibrated over the period (1950–1996) by a statistical comparison with data observed by the regional meteorological network managed by the former National Hydrological Service (SIMN), Department of Naples. The effects of climate change on air temperature (T), precipitation (P) and, consequently, on actual evapotranspiration (ETR) and effective precipitation Pe (P – ETR) were analyzed until 2100. The latter was considered as a proxy of groundwater recharge of the principal aquifer systems, represented chiefly by the karst aquifers. As a principal result, it was found that the E15 is basically able to reproduce the observed annual precipitation (OBSP) and mean annual air temperature (OBST), being characterized by a very similar frequency distribution. Accordingly, an inferential statistical approach was performed for calibrating E15 precipitation (E15P) and air temperature (E15T) based on the compensation of the difference with OBSP (+ 7%) and OBST (− 16%). The E15 projects a reduction in precipitation and an increase in air temperature under both RCPs, with a divergence point between the two scenarios occurring by about 2040. As a principal result, Pe shows declining trends for both RCP scenarios, reaching a decrease of the 11-yrs moving average down to − 20%, for RCP4.5, and − 50%, for RCP8.5, even if characterized by relevant inter-annual fluctuations.

Cisgender and heterosexual norms permeate every level of language classrooms, from textbooks to classroom discourse to teachers' actions, constraining queer/trans learners' ability to be themselves. Yet queer/trans and non-queer/trans learners alike may challenge cisheteronormativity within the language classroom and create new possibilities. We investigate the possibilities of queer/trans learners' agency within these normative structures by bringing together three cases from larger separate projects, examining the context and actions of learners in each setting as they attempt to queer their classrooms to make them habitable. Drawing from Ahmed's queer phenomenology, we analyze the devices that orient students to classroom cisheteronormativity, actions that students and their accomplices may take to breach these norms, and the reactions to and potential of such breaches within the L2 classroom context. We find that orienting devices, including curricular representation, language use, and grading practices, convey implicit and explicit messaging that can limit expressions of gender and sexuality. Yet queer breaches, when not subject to straightening, can lead to new classroom possibilities for expression, playfulness, and identity validation. We conclude by considering the implications of this analysis for practice.

Abstract BackgroundJuvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder with no cure. Most children are prescribed several medications aimed at controlling disease activity, managing symptoms, and reducing pain. Physical activity is also encouraged to retain musculoskeletal function. The primary determinants of treatment success are maintaining long-term adherence, ongoing monitoring by a pediatric rheumatologist, and involvement of an interdisciplinary team. To support these goals, a new digital intervention was developed, InteractiveClinics, which aimed to prompt children to take their medications, report pain levels, and increase their physical activity. ObjectiveThis study aims to evaluate the usability of InteractiveClinics among children with JIA. MethodsAs part of this pediatric cross-sectional study, 12 children were asked to wear a smartwatch for 2 weeks, which was synchronized to the InteractiveClinics phone app and web-based platform. Personalized notifications were sent daily to the watch and phone, to prompt and record medication adherence and pain level assessment. Physical activity was automatically recorded by the watch. At the end of the study, all children and parents completed a postintervention survey. Written comments were also encouraged to gain further feedback. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the survey results, and all qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. ResultsTwelve children aged 10 to 18 years (mean 14.2, SD 3.1 years; female: n=8, 66.7%) and 1 parent for each child (n=12; female: n=8, 66.7%) were enrolled in the study. Based on the highest and lowest agreement areas of the survey, most children and parents liked the smartwatch and web-based platform; they found it easy to learn and simple to use. They were also satisfied with the pain and physical activity module. However, usability and acceptability barriers that hindered uptake were identified in the phone app and medication module. Children required a unique in-app experience, and their suggestive improvements included more personalization within the app; simplification by removing all links not relevant to antirheumatic medications; flexibility in response times; improved conferment through gamification; additional comment fields for the input of more data, such as medication side effects or pain-related symptoms; more detailed graphical illustrations of the physical activity module, including a breakdown of metrics; and importantly, interconnections between modules, because medication adherence, pain levels, and physical activity can each influence the other. They were, overall, improving usefulness for children and parents. ConclusionsThe usability of InteractiveClinics was positive. Children and parents liked the watch and web-based platform and were satisfied with the pain and physical activity module. However, children wanted a unique in-app experience through more personalization, simplification, flexibility, conferment, comment fields, graphical illustrations, a breakdown of metrics, and interconnections. Certainly, inclusions are needed to promote user adoption and advancement of new validated digital health interventions in pediatric rheumatology, to support the delivery of integrated care.

Study region: Avella Mts., southern Italy. Study focus: The paper is focused on groundwater of Avella Mts. This aquifer has been experiencing an increasing human pressure due to periods of drought and growth in groundwater extraction. A novel hydrogeological conceptual model was developed, and groundwater recharge was estimated by two approaches. The study was carried out by an in-depth literature review and a GIS-based analysis of geological and piezometric data, ground-based meteorological and remotely sensed data. New hydrological insights for the region: The new hydrogeological conceptual model allowed to reconstruct the aquifer lithology, its deep geometry, and, for the first time, groundwater flow scheme. Five groundwater basins were recognized with distinct outlets and subsurface outflows, suggesting a new aquifer compartmentalization in-series groundwater basins. Some basal springs are fed by autonomous basins with smaller extension, while other springs have dried up completely. The groundwater recharge varies from 7.30 to 6.90 m3/s as estimated by Turc formula and MODIS data, respectively; the values are comparable among them, confirming mutually the validity of approaches used. The comparison with previous studies highlights variations and changes for both the hydrogeological conceptual model and water balance, linked to natural and anthropogenic factors. The results obtained represent a way for supporting sustainable management of groundwater, waterwork systems security and groundwater-dependent ecosystems protection of a large sector of Campania region.

Study region: Terminio Mt. karst aquifer, Campania region, southern Italy Study focus: Karst aquifers are largely exploited, but the assessment of groundwater recharge in these aquifers is still considered challenging due to: i) the disregarding of the hydrological role of the soil coverings; ii) the lack of a spatially homogeneous coverage of rain and air temperature monitoring stations. Here we propose a multi-methodological approach to evaluate the groundwater recharge of the Terminio Mt. karst aquifer. This aquifer is mantled by ash-fall pyroclastic soils fostering the development of a luxuriant vegetation. A field and laboratory characterization of soil coverings was performed, and the spatial and temporal variability of groundwater recharge was estimated by the Soil Water Balance code. New hydrological insights for the region: A variability of thickness of ash-fall pyroclastic soils, ranging between 0.40 m and 1.00 m, classified as sandy loam, were found. These features resulted in variable groundwater recharge and evapotranspiration rates depending on land cover classes and thickness of pyroclastic soils. Outcomes show the relevant hydrological role of soil coverings whose relevant water retention, up to 427.8 mm, coupled with the significant precipitation, exceeding 1,000 mm·yr-1 in average, results in a value of the actual evapotranspiration equal to the potential one. The approach proposed advances the understanding of the infiltration-evapotranspiration trade-off which regulates the spatial and temporal variability of groundwater recharge.

Carob pulp powder and chickpea flour were used as ingredients in the formulation of a plant-based fermented beverage (gurt). Three different exopolysaccharide-producing strains (Levilactobacillus brevis AM7, Weissella confusa CK15, and Pediococcus claussenii DSM 14800) were used as starters to obtain a gurt rich in fiber and protein. L. brevis AM7 showed the fastest and more intense acidification, whereas W. confusa CK15 induced the highest viscosity increase (reaching up to 3000 mPa × s) due to the in-situ synthesis of dextran. Gurts were characterized by a high antioxidant activity (86.37 %) mainly due to the ingredients used, since it was not affected by fermentation. Depending on the strain, fermentation determined a significant decrease of gurts starch hydrolysis index. Overall, the microbiological, biochemical, and rheological features were retained during the two-weeks refrigerated storage. All exopolysaccharide-producing strains resulted suitable starters for gurt production, but their metabolic traits reflected different fermentation performances and product features. Overall, W. confusa CK15 resulted an efficient dextran producer whereas, based on the growth and acidification kinetics, L. brevis AM7 showed optimal adaptation to carob/chickpea substrate and pro-technological performance.

A wide variety of adversarial attacks have been proposed and explored using image and audio data. These attacks are notoriously easy to generate digitally when the attacker can directly manipulate the input to a model, but are much more difficult to implement in the real world. In this paper we present a universal, time invariant attack for general time series data such that the attack has a frequency spectrum primarily composed of the frequencies present in the original data. The universality of the attack makes it fast and easy to implement as no computation is required to add it to an input, while time invariance is useful for real world deployment. Additionally, the frequency constraint ensures the attack can withstand filtering defenses. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the attack on two different classification tasks through both digital and real world experiments, and show that the attack is robust against common transform-and-compare defense pipelines.

Abstract Background Analysis of tongue movement would benefit from a reference showcasing healthy tongue capability. We aimed to develop a reference of tongue capability and evaluated the role of visual feedback on the expression of movement. Methods Using a wireless tracking intraoral wearable device, we composed probability distributions of the tongue tip as subjects were asked to explore the entire sensing surface area. Half of the 32 subjects received live visual feedback of the location of the center of the tongue tip contact. Results We observed that the visual feedback group was 51.0% more consistent with each other in the position domain, explored 21.5% more sensing surface area, and was 50.7% more uniformly distributed. We found less consistent results when we evaluated velocity and acceleration. Conclusion Visual feedback best established a healthy capability reference which can be used for designing new interfaces, quantifying tongue ability, developing new diagnostic and rehabilitation techniques, and studying underlying mechanisms of tongue motor control.

Abstract The assessment of groundwater vulnerability to pollution is becoming even more important all over the world due to the increase of impacts of human activities on groundwater resources and the related risks to the human health, economics, and the environment. Owing to the variability of methods known for estimating groundwater vulnerability, basically depending on hydrogeological parameters considered and the scale of analysis, the comparison of results of different methods appears straightforward for identifying the best approach in a given hydrogeological condition and reference scale. In such a view, this work attempts to assess the groundwater vulnerability of the Terminio Mt. karst aquifer, by applying four different groundwater vulnerability methods, index-based, and comparing results in order to identify the best performing one in karst environments. The study aquifer, located in the Picentini Mts Regional Park (Campania region, southern Italy) represents a strategic drinking water resource since Roman times and hosts massive groundwater resources which outflow mainly from tapped basal and subordinately perched springs. The peculiar characters of the study karst aquifer, which favour direct infiltration and groundwater recharge processes, as well as the occurrence of industrial, agricultural and grazing activities, make it very vulnerable to groundwater pollution, thus requiring a proper and careful territorial management. Beside the most frequently and generally used methods for assessing groundwater vulnerability, such as the DRASTIC and SINTACS, also DAC and COP methods specifically designed for karst aquifers were applied and mutually compared. Results of SINTACS, DRASTIC and DAC methods show groundwater vulnerability maps of the Terminio Mt. karst aquifer as chiefly characterized by two classes of intrinsic groundwater vulnerability, varying between the medium and high degrees. Furthermore, high and extremely high values of groundwater vulnerability were found in areas controlled by the shallow depth of the water-table. Instead, the COP method resulted as the most effective in identifying the endorheic areas and the related karst morphologies as very high groundwater vulnerability zones, therefore the most suitable in capturing specific hydrogeological features of karst areas that control groundwater pollution and vulnerability. Results obtained will support decision tools aimed at the land use planning and protection of karst aquifers from pollution in karst areas.

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (NH) is a common condition in newborns, with elevated bilirubin levels potentially causing neurological damage or death. Accurate and timely measurements of total serum bilirubin are essential to prevent these outcomes. Direct spectrophotometry, a reliable method for measuring bilirubin, is particularly useful in constrained settings due to its potential for portable low-cost instrumentation. However, this method is susceptible to interference from hemoglobin, often present due to hemolysis. Typically, this interference is reduced using complex optical filters, reagents, multiple wavelengths, or combinations thereof, which increase costs and complexity while reducing usability. This study presents a hemoglobin compensation algorithm applied to a simple, portable, two-wavelength (465 and 590 nm) reflectance photometer designed to receive 30 µL of plasma or whole blood samples and perform the measurement without any reagents. Testing across five bilirubin and hemoglobin levels (4.96 to 28 mg/dL and 0.06 to 0.99 g/dL, respectively) demonstrated that the algorithm effectively reduces hemoglobin interference and overestimation errors. The overall root mean square error was reduced from 4.86 to 1.45 mg/dL, while the measurement bias decreased from −4.46 to −0.10 mg/dL. This substantial reduction in overestimation errors supports future clinical trials with neonatal blood samples.

Abstract Deep learning models have proven to be a powerful tool for the prediction of molecular properties for applications including drug design and the development of energy storage materials. However, in order to learn accurate and robust structure–property mappings, these models require large amounts of data which can be a challenge to collect given the time and resource-intensive nature of experimental material characterization efforts. Additionally, such models fail to generalize to new types of molecular structures that were not included in the model training data. The acceleration of material development through uncertainty-guided experimental design has the promise to significantly reduce the data requirements and enable faster generalization to new types of materials. To evaluate the potential of such approaches for electrolyte design applications, we perform comprehensive evaluation of existing uncertainty quantification methods on the prediction of two relevant molecular properties - aqueous solubility and redox potential. We develop novel evaluation methods to probe the utility of the uncertainty estimates for both in-domain and out-of-domain data sets. Finally, we leverage selected uncertainty estimation methods for active learning to evaluate their capacity to support experimental design.

Philadelphia-Negative Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are a diverse group of blood cancers leading to excessive production of mature blood cells. These chronic diseases, including polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET), and primary myelofibrosis (PMF), can significantly impact patient quality of life and are still incurable in the vast majority of the cases. This review examines the mechanobiology within a bone marrow niche, emphasizing the role of mechanical cues and the primary cilium in the pathophysiology of MPNs. It discusses the influence of extracellular matrix components, cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, and mechanosensitive structures on hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) behavior and disease progression. Additionally, the potential implications of the primary cilium as a chemo- and mechanosensory organelle in bone marrow cells are explored, highlighting its involvement in signaling pathways crucial for hematopoietic regulation. This review proposes future research directions to better understand the dysregulated bone marrow niche in MPNs and to identify novel therapeutic targets.

Background The management of acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocation remains controversial. Recently, anatomic coracoclavicular (CC) fixation with a double clavicular tunnel and three flip-buttons has shown promising results. This study aimed to evaluate functional and radiological outcomes in patients with high-grade AC joint dislocation treated with anatomic CC fixation using double clavicular tunnels and three flip-buttons. Methods A retrospective, unicentric study was performed. The study included patients with high-grade AC joint dislocation who underwent surgery with anatomic CC fixation using double clavicular tunnels and three flip-buttons. Demographic data were obtained from medical records. A functional evaluation using subjective shoulder value (SSV), visual analog scale (VAS), and disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand (DASH) questionnaires was performed, and an evaluation of preoperative and postoperative comparative Zanca view images was performed. Factors associated with functional outcomes and radiological AC reduction were analyzed. Results A total of 83 patients completed follow-up and were included in the analysis. The mean SSV, VAS, and DASH scores were 92.8, 0.8, and 6.4, respectively. Patients who had complications experienced significantly worse functional outcomes (DASH: P=0.037). Suboptimal final AC reduction was observed in nine patients (11.1%), and significantly more frequently in patients older than 40 years (P=0.031) and in surgeries performed more than 7 days after injury (P=0.034). There were two reoperations (2.4%). Conclusions Anatomic CC fixation with a double clavicular tunnel and three flip-buttons leads to good functional outcomes, low complication rates, and high rates of optimal AC reduction. Sourdough technology has been known for its role in the improvement of texture, flavor, and quality of mainly wheat and rye-based breads for decades. However, little is reported about its use in the improvement of whole-grain oat bread, especially concerning flavor formation, which is one major consumer drivers. This study investigated the effects of sourdough obtained by different lactic acid bacteria and yeast starters consortia on the texture and flavor of 100% oat bread. Four different consortia were selected to obtain four oat sourdoughs, which were analyzed to assess the main features due to the different starter fermentation metabolism. Sourdoughs were added to breads as 30% dough weight. Bread quality was technologically monitored via hardness and volume measurements. Sourdough breads were softer and had higher specific volume. The sensory profile of sourdoughs and breads was assessed by a trained panel in sensory laboratory conditions, and the volatile profile was analyzed by HS-SPME-GC-MS. Sourdoughs were rated with higher intensities than untreated control for most of attributes, especially concerning sour aroma and flavor attributes. Sourdough breads were rated with higher intensities than control bread for sour vinegar flavor and total odor intensity, in addition they had richer volatile profile. Our results confirmed that sourdough addition can lead to an enhanced flavor, moreover, it demonstrated that the use of different consortia of lactic acid bacteria and yeast strains leads to the improvement of texture and altered sensory profile of whole-oat bread.

Sunflower press cake is a protein-rich sidestream from oil production, that is potentially suitable for human consumption, but its utilisation is hindered by the high content of chlorogenic acid (CGA), an abundant anti-nutritional factor. Here we show that processing sunflower protein concentrate (SP) by fermentation (fSP) reduces the CGA content while increasing the level of free amino acids, but impairs the formation of fibrillar structures and generates a sour taste. After fermentation of SP pH was shifted to neutral (fSP7). Meat analogues based on SP, fSP, fSP7, and pea protein isolate were prepared by high-moisture extrusion processing, which reduced CGA levels further. The texture and colour of the extrudates were both improved by the neutral pH shift. Finally, the odour, flavour and structure were assessed by a trained sensory panel. We found that fermentation followed by a neutral pH shift encouraged the formation of fibrillar structures and prevented sour taste attributes in the meat analogue. Our data will facilitate the development of sunflower protein products that are more palatable and nutritionally beneficial for humans.
