Background: The impact of baseline triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and abnormal low or high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C or HDL-C) levels on all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between TyG index and LDL-C or HDL-C and all-cause and CVD mortality. Methods: This retrospective cohort study analyzed data from health examinations of 69,068 older adults aged ≥60 in Xinzheng City, Henan Province, China, between January 2013 and January 2023. Cox proportional risk regression models were used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of the TyG index and LDL-C or HDL-C about all-cause and CVD mortality. Restricted cubic spline was used to assess the dose-response relationship. Results: During 400,094 person-years of follow-up (median follow-up 5.8 years [interquartile range 3.0-9.12]), 13,664 deaths were recorded, of which 7,045 were due to CVD. Compared with participants in the second quartile of the TyG index, participants in the fourth quartile had a 16% increased risk of all-cause mortality (HR: 1.16, 95% CI: 1.12,1.22), and an 8% increased risk of CVD mortality (HR: 1.08, 95% CI: 1.01,1.16). Similar results were observed in LDL-C and HDL-C, with all-cause and CVD mortality risks for participants in the fourth quartile compared with participants in the third quartile for LDL-C of (HR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.02,1.12) and (HR: 1.09, 95% CI: 1.01,1.17), respectively. The risk of all-cause and CVD mortality in participants in the fourth quartile group compared with those in the second HDL-C quartile group was (HR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.05,1.16) and (HR: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.04,1.18), respectively. We found that the TyG index was nonlinearly associated with all-cause and CVD mortality (P non-linear <0.05), and LDL-C was nonlinearly associated with all-cause mortality (P non-linear <0.05) but linearly associated with CVD mortality (P non-linear >0.05). HDL-C, on the other hand, was in contrast to LDL-C, which showed a non-linear association with CVD mortality. We did not observe a significant interaction between TyG index and LDL-C or HDL-C (P >0.05). Conclusion: TyG index and LDL-C or HDL-C increased the risk of all-cause and CVD mortality, especially a high TyG index combined with abnormal LDL-C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this innovative work, a series of CuO/TiO2/Ti monolithic catalysts were successfully synthesized using a scalable multistep method involving plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) and hydrothermal processes. The results revealed that the growth of CuO nanostructures can be controlled by varying the hydrothermal time. Specifically, the CuO/TiO2/Ti monolithic catalyst, obtained through a 1 h hydrothermal reaction (HR1), resulted in fine particle size, good dispersion, large specific surface area, especially sufficient Cu+ active sites, high oxygen vacancy concentration, and excellent redox ability. These attributes collectively ensured the efficient catalytic CO oxidation activity of the prepared catalysts. Moreover, the as-synthesized HR1 catalyst exhibited a remarkable ability to achieve 100% conversion at ∼107 °C, indicating enormous potential as a substitute for conventional noble metal catalysts. Furthermore, this study elucidates that the CO, adsorbed on the Cu+ sites, is oxidized by the lattice oxygen of CuO. The O2 present in the feed gas plays a crucial role in replenishing the oxygen vacancies created during this process, thereby facilitating efficient recycling of the catalytic reaction. The presented mechanism analysis of CuO/TiO2/Ti monolithic catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation provides a theoretical basis for the design of catalysts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forming high‐temperature α‐Al2O3 phase under soft sparking is an intriguing phenomenon in plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) of Al alloys, which contradicts the low energy input of the process. In this study, α‐Al2O3 doped with black CuO is formed beneath an amorphous white outer layer on Al–Cu–Li alloy by PEO in a dilute silicate electrolyte under soft sparking. In comparison, reddish coatings with dominating γ‐Al2O3 are formed under the conventional plasma discharges, although blackish inner layer with α‐Al2O3 can also be exposed by heavily polishing the samples. In order to know the underlying mechanism, temperatures at the coating surface and the underlying substrate have been monitored by a thermocouple under the conventional and soft sparking PEO regimes, respectively. Interestingly, high temperatures are detected in the case of soft sparking rather than PEO with strong discharges. The formation of CuO, quartz, and cristobalite within the soft sparking coating also supports the existence of high temperature. Hence, the formation of α‐Al2O3 under soft sparking can be resolved to the conventional thermal activation mechanism, without the need of seeking other plausible explanations. Thermal condition evaluation for soft sparking PEO suggests that values of the effective thermal conductivity during PEO process for the outer layer and the barrier layer at the coating/substrate interface might be lower than ∼0.05 and ∼0.0017 W m−1 K−1, respectively. It is believed that the amorphous structure of the outer and barrier layers effectively blocks the heat dissipation, facilitating the formation of a highly wear‐resistant inner layer with α‐Al2O3, CuO, and the other high‐temperature species under soft sparking. In this study, the influence of cathodic polarization on the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) behaviors of pure magnesium and AZ31 and AZ91 magnesium alloys with varied Al alloying contents was systematically examined in a dilute alkaline silicate electrolyte by adjusting the cathodic-to-anodic current density ratio (R = jc/ja) from 0 to 3.2. The results show that moderate cathodic polarization (R = 0.6) led to the thickest coatings on the Mg and Mg alloys, and the coatings grew in an outward-and-inward mode compared with the inward growth at R = 0. Excessive cathodic polarization (high R ratios) differently influenced the PEO behaviors of the magnesium alloys. For the pure magnesium and AZ31 alloy, the coatings blistered or peeled off when the R ≥ 0.9. However, the tolerance to cathodic polarization was significantly improved for the AZ91 Mg alloy. The coatings were undamaged even with the highest R ratio of 3.2, and their compactness was further improved as the R ratio increased to 0.9 and 1.2. An increase in cathodic polarization led to a reduction in the anodic potential and spark softening but did not result in an improvement in the coating quality. Optical emission spectroscopy identified two spectral lines at 559.79 and 570.11 nm, which are assigned to the Mg species but not found in databases or the literature. The corrosion and wear resistance of the PEO coatings were also investigated. The coating formed on the AZ91 magnesium alloy at R = 1.2 displayed the narrowest wear track due to its high compactness. Cysteine-rich secretory proteins (C), antigen 5 (A), and pathogenesis-related 1 proteins (P) comprise widespread CAP superfamily proteins, which have been proven to be novel virulence factors of mammalian pathogenic fungi and some plant pathogens. Despite this, the identification and function of CAP proteins in more species of plant pathogens still need to be studied. This work presents the identification and functional analysis of CAP superfamily proteins from Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), an important fungal pathogen that causes wheat stripe rust on wheat worldwide. A total of six CAP genes were identified in the Pst genome, designated as PsCAP1–PsCAP6. Five PsCAP proteins, including PsCAP1, PsCAP2, PsCAP3, PsCAP4, and PsCAP5, have N-terminal signal peptides secreted with the yeast signal sequence trap assay. Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis indicated that they showed a low level of intraspecies polymorphism. The expression abundance of PsCAP genes at different Pst infection stages was detected by RT-qPCR, and most of them were highly expressed during Pst infection on wheat and also Pst sexual reproduction on barberry (Berberis shensiana). Noticeably, the silencing of these six PsCAP genes by BSMV-mediated HIGS indicated that PsCAP1, PsCAP4, and PsCAP5 contribute significantly to Pst infection in wheat. These results indicate that PsCAP proteins may act as virulence factors during Pst infection, which also provides insights into Pst pathogenicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A growing literature suggests that there is cross-cultural variation in levels of autism-related stigma, which may partially be explained by differences in cultural orientation or autism-related knowledge between countries. This literature has relied heavily on self-report measures of explicit attitudes towards autism; little research has examined implicit biases, and whether these implicit biases vary across cultures. Thus, here we had two aims: (1) to assess the contribution of knowledge and cultural orientation to both explicit stigma and implicit biases, and (2) to compare autism-related knowledge, explicit stigma, and implicit biases across university students in Hong Kong (n = 119), the United Kingdom (n = 120), and the United States (n = 122). Replicating prior work, we found that explicit stigma was predicted by less accurate knowledge, lower horizontal collectivism, greater vertical individualism, and higher implicit biases. Implicit biases were directly predicted by age and explicit stigma, and indirectly predicted by vertical individualism (positively) and horizontal collectivism (negatively) via explicit stigma. Knowledge and explicit stigma differed across countries, even after accounting for covariates: students in Hong Kong displayed less accurate knowledge, and higher explicit stigma towards autism, than those in the United Kingdom and United States. However, implicit biases did not differ between countries.Attitudes towards autism vary across countries. Some of this variation could reflect differences in cultural values across countries, or differences in how much people know about autism. Until now, most research on this topic has asked people directly about their attitudes towards interacting with autistic people. As a result, we understand little about why some people unconsciously hold negative attitudes towards autism, and whether these unconscious attitudes vary across countries. We studied explicit attitudes (willingness to interact), implicit attitudes (unconscious beliefs), knowledge about autism, and cultural values in university students from Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the United States. We found that people were less willing to interact with autistic people if they knew less about autism, aligned with a competitive and hierarchical society (‘vertical individualism’), did not see themselves as part of a collective whose members are equal (less ‘horizontal collectivism’), and if they unconcsciously associated autism with negative attributes. Students in Hong Kong were less willing to interact with autistic people and had less understanding of autism compared to those in the United Kingdom and the United States. Unconscious biases did not differ across countries. Our findings highlight the need to combat misconceptions about autism to improve attitudes towards autistic people, especially in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, our results suggest that acquiring more accurate knowledge may not be sufficient to alter unconscious biases. Several effectors from phytopathogens usually target various cell organelles to interfere with plant defenses, and they generally contain sequences that direct their translocation into organelles, such as chloroplasts. In this study, we characterized a different mechanism for effectors to attack chloroplasts in wheat (Triticum aestivum). Two effectors from Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), Pst&#95;4, and Pst&#95;5, inhibit Bax-mediated cell death and plant immune responses, such as callose deposition and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. Gene silencing of the two effectors induced significant resistance to Pst, demonstrating that both effectors function as virulence factors of Pst. Although these two effectors have low sequence similarities and lack chloroplast transit peptides, they both interact with TaISP (wheat cytochrome b6-f complex iron-sulfur subunit, a chloroplast protein encoded by nuclear gene) in the cytoplasm. Silencing of TaISP impaired wheat resistance to avirulent Pst and resulted in less accumulation of ROS. Heterogeneous expression of TaISP enhanced chloroplast-derived ROS accumulation in Nicotiana benthamiana. Co-localization in N. benthamiana and western blot assay of TaISP content in wheat chloroplasts show that both effectors suppressed TaISP from entering chloroplasts. We conclude that these biotrophic fungal effectors suppress plant defenses by disrupting the sorting of chloroplast protein, thereby limiting host ROS accumulation and promoting fungal pathogenicity., (© American Society of Plant Biologists 2021.
