Channel estimation poses significant challenges in millimeter-wave massive multiple-input multiple-output systems, especially when the base station has fewer radio-frequency chains than antennas. To address this challenge, one promising solution exploits the beamspace channel sparsity to reconstruct full-dimensional channels from incomplete measurements. This paper presents a model-based deep learning method to reconstruct sparse, as well as approximately sparse, vectors fast and accurately. To implement this method, we propose a trimmed-ridge regression that transforms the sparse-reconstruction problem into a least-squares problem regularized by a nonconvex penalty term, and then derive an iterative solution. We then unfold the iterations into a deep network that can be implemented in online applications to realize real-time computations. To this end, an unfolded trimmed-ridge regression model is constructed using a structural configuration to reduce computational complexity and a model ensemble strategy to improve accuracy. The integration of CubeSats with Free Space Optical (FSO) links accelerates a major advancement in high-throughput, low-Earth orbit communication systems. However, CubeSats face challenges such as size, weight, and power (SWaP) limitations, as well as vibrations that cause fluctuations in the angle-of-arrival (AoA) of the optical beam at the receiver. These practical challenges make establishing CubeSat-assisted FSO links complicated. To mitigate AoA fluctuations, we expand the receiver's field of view and track the location of the focused beam spot using an array of avalanche photodiodes at the receiver. Initially, we model the optical channel between the transmitter and the detector array. Furthermore, to reduce the computational load of maximum likelihood sequence detection, which is infeasible for CubeSats due to SWaP constraints, we propose a sub-optimal blind sequence data detection approach that relies on the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) criterion. We also utilize combining methods such as equal gain combining (EGC) and maximal ratio combining (MRC) for data detection, benchmarking their performance against the GLRT-based method. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed low-complexity GLRT-based method outperforms the combining methods, achieving performance close to that of the ideal receiver., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Positioning has recently received considerable attention as a key enabler in emerging applications such as extended reality, unmanned aerial vehicles and smart environments. These applications require both data communication and high-precision positioning, and thus they are particularly well-suited to be offered in wireless networks (WNs). The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of existing works and new trends in the field of positioning techniques from both the academic and industrial perspectives. The paper provides a comprehensive overview of positioning in WNs, covering the background, applications, measurements, state-of-the-art technologies and future challenges. The paper outlines the applications of positioning from the perspectives of public facilities, enterprises and individual users. We investigate the key performance indicators and measurements of positioning systems, followed by the review of the key enabler techniques such as artificial intelligence/large models and adaptive systems. Next, we discuss a number of typical wireless positioning technologies. We extend our overview beyond the academic progress, to include the standardization efforts, and finally, we provide insight into the challenges that remain. The comprehensive overview of exisitng efforts and new trends in the field of positioning from both the academic and industrial communities would be a useful reference to researchers in the field.

The growing demand for location-based services in areas like virtual reality, robot control, and navigation has intensified the focus on indoor localization. Visible light positioning (VLP), leveraging visible light communications (VLC), becomes a promising indoor positioning technology due to its high accuracy and low cost. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of VLP systems. In particular, since VLC lays the foundation for VLP, we first present a detailed overview of the principles of VLC. The performance of each positioning algorithm is also compared in terms of various metrics such as accuracy, coverage, and orientation limitation. Beyond the physical layer studies, the network design for a VLP system is also investigated, including multi-access technologies resource allocation, and light-emitting diode (LED) placements. Next, the applications of the VLP systems are overviewed. Finally, this paper outlines open issues, challenges, and future research directions for the research field. In a nutshell, this paper constitutes the first holistic survey on VLP from state-of-the-art studies to practical uses.

In traditional Fog-Radio Access Networks (F-RANs), enhanced remote radio heads (eRRHs) are connected to a macro base station (MBS) through fronthaul links. Deploying a massive number of eRRHs is not always feasible due to site constraints and the cost of fronthaul links. This paper introduces an innovative concept of using smart helpers (SHs) in F-RANs. These SHs do not require fronthaul links and listen to the nearby eRRHs' communications. Then, they smartly select and cache popular content. This capability enables SHs to serve users with frequent on-demand service requests potentially. As such, network operators have the flexibility to easily deploy SHs in various scenarios, such as dense urban areas and temporary public events, to expand their F-RANs and improve the quality of service (QoS). To study the performance of the proposed SH-aided F-RAN, we formulate an optimization problem of minimizing the average transmission delay that jointly optimizes cache resources and user scheduling. To tackle the formulated problem, we develop an innovative multi-stage algorithm that uses a reinforcement learning (RL) framework. In practical cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks with distributed and low-cost access points, the asynchronous arrival of signals at the user equipments increases multi-user interference that degrades the system performance. Meanwhile, rate-splitting (RS), exploiting the transmission of both common and private messages, has demonstrated to offer considerable spectral efficiency (SE) improvements and its robustness against channel state information (CSI) imperfection. The signal performance of a CF massive MIMO system is first analyzed for asynchronous reception capturing the joint effects of propagation delays and oscillator phases of transceivers. Taking into account the imperfect CSI caused by asynchronous phases and pilot contamination, we derive novel and closed-form downlink SE expressions for characterizing the performance of both the RS-assisted and conventional non-RS-based systems adopting coherent and non-coherent data transmission schemes, respectively. Moreover, we formulate the design of robust precoding for the common messages as an optimization problem that maximizes the minimum individual SE of the common message. To address the non-convexity of the design problem, a bisection method is proposed to solve the problem optimally. Simulation results show that asynchronous reception indeed destroys both the orthogonality of the pilots and the coherent data transmission resulting in poor system performance. Besides, thanks to the uniform coverage properties of CF massive MIMO systems, RS with a simple low-complexity precoding for the common message obtained by the equal ratio sum of the private precoding is able to achieve substantial downlink sum SE gains, while the application of robust precoding to the common message is shown to be useful in some extreme cases, e.g., serious oscillator mismatch and unknown delay phase., Comment: 34 pages, 11 figures, Accepted in IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications

Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is considered as a promising technology for achieving the ultimate performance limit. However, due to its distributed architecture and low-cost access points (APs), the signals received at user equipments (UEs) are most likely asynchronous. In this paper, we investigate the performance of CF massive MIMO systems with asynchronous reception, including both effects of delay and oscillator phases. Taking into account the imperfect channel state information caused by phase asynchronization and pilot contamination, we obtain novel and closed-form downlink spectral efficiency (SE) expressions with coherent and non-coherent data transmission schemes, respectively. Simulation results show that asynchronous reception destroys the orthogonality of pilots and coherent transmission of data, and thus results in poor system performance. In addition, getting a highly accurate delay phase is substantial for CF massive MIMO systems to achieve coherent transmission gain. A single machine total weighted tardiness minimization (TWTM) problem in operational planning is considered. The problem is formulated as an NP-hard constrained combinatorial problem, which has no known deterministic polynomial complexity solution using classical computing. Based on efficient Grover's quantum search and Trugenberger's quantum optimization algorithms, a novel efficient quantum optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the NP-hard single machine TWTM problem, which makes the desired solution satisfying the searching constraints and showing the minimal TWT value be measured with the highest probability.

Indoor multi-robot communications face two key challenges: one is the severe signal strength degradation caused by blockages (e.g., walls) and the other is the dynamic environment caused by robot mobility. To address these issues, we consider the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to overcome the signal blockage and assist the trajectory design among multiple robots. Meanwhile, the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is adopted to cope with the scarcity of spectrum and enhance the connectivity of robots. Considering the limited battery capacity of robots, we aim to maximize the energy efficiency by jointly optimizing the transmit power of the access point (AP), the phase shifts of the RIS, and the trajectory of robots. A novel federated deep reinforcement learning (F-DRL) approach is developed to solve this challenging problem with one dynamic long-term objective. Through each robot planning its path and downlink power, the AP only needs to determine the phase shifts of the RIS, which can significantly save the computation overhead due to the reduced training dimension. Simulation results reveal the following findings: I) the proposed F-DRL can reduce at least 86% convergence time compared to the centralized DRL; II) the designed algorithm can adapt to the increasing number of robots; III) compared to traditional OMA-based benchmarks, NOMA-enhanced schemes can achieve higher energy efficiency., Comment: The paper has been accepted for publication in the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology

This paper proposes an ultrasonic backscatter communication (UsBC) system for passive implantable medical devices (IMDs) that can operate without batteries, enabling versatile revolutionary applications for future healthcare. The proposed UsBC system consists of a reader and a tag. The reader sends interrogation pulses to the tag. The tag backscatters the pulses based on the piezoelectric effect of a piezo transducer. We present several basic modulation schemes for UsBC by impedance matching of the piezo transducer. To mitigate the interference of other scatters in the human body, the tag transmits information bits by codeword mapping, and the reader performs codeword matching before energy detection in the reader. We further derive the theoretical bit-error rate (BER) expression. Monte Carlo simulations verify the theoretical analysis and show that passive UsBC can achieve low BER and low complexity, which is desirable for size- and energy-constrained IMDs., Comment: 5 pages and 5 figures

This letter studies the ergodic mutual information (EMI) of keyhole multiple-input multiple-output channels having finite-alphabet input signals. The EMI is first investigated for single-stream transmission considering both cases with and without the channel state information at the transmitter. Then, the derived results are extended to the scenario of multi-stream transmission. Asymptotic analyses are performed in the regime of high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The high-SNR EMI is shown to converge to a constant with its rate of convergence determined by the diversity order. On this basis, the influence of the keyhole effect on the EMI is discussed. This letter establishes a unified analytical framework to study the asymptotic average mutual information (AMI) of mixture gamma (MG) distributed fading channels driven by finite input signals in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. It is found that the AMI converges to some constant as the average SNR increases and its rate of convergence (ROC) is determined by the coding gain and diversity order. Moreover, the derived results are used to investigate the asymptotic optimal power allocation policy of a bank of parallel fading channels having finite inputs. It is suggested that in the high SNR region, the sub-channel with a lower coding gain or diversity order should be allocated with more power. We investigate a multi-pair two-way decode-andforward relaying aided massive multiple-input multiple-output antenna system under Rician fading channels, in which multiple pairs of users exchange information through a relay station having multiple antennas. Imperfect channel state information is considered in the context of maximum-ratio processing. Closedform expressions are derived for approximating the sum spectral efficiency (SE) of the system. Moreover, we obtain the powerscaling laws at the users and the relay station to satisfy a certain SE requirement in three typical scenarios. In physical-layer security, one of the most fundamental issues is the secrecy capacity. The objective of this paper is to determine the secrecy capacity for an indoor visible light communication system consisting of a transmitter, a legitimate receiver and an eavesdropping receiver. In such a system, both signal-independent and signal-dependent Gaussian noises are considered. Under non-negativity and average optical intensity constraints, lower and upper secrecy capacity bounds are first derived by the variational method, the dual expression of the secrecy capacity, and the concept of "the optimal input distribution that escapes to infinity". Numerical results show that the secrecy capacity upper and lower bounds are tight. By an asymptotic analysis at large optical intensity, there is a small performance gap between the asymptotic upper and lower bounds. Then, by adding a peak optical intensity constraint, we further analyze the exact and asymptotic secrecy capacity bounds. A ground-to-air free-space optical link is studied for a hovering unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) having multiple rotors. For this UAV, a four-quadrant array of photodetectors is used at the optical receiver to alleviate the adverse effect of hovering fluctuations by enlarging the receiver field-of-view. Extensive mathematical analysis is conducted to evaluate the beam tracking performance under the random effects of hovering fluctuations. The accuracy of the derived analytical expressions is corroborated by performing Monte-Carlo simulations. Conventional beamforming is based on channel estimation, which can be computationally intensive and inaccurate when the antenna array is large. In this work, we study the outage probability of positioning-assisted beamforming systems. Closed-form outage probability bounds are derived by considering positioning error, link distance and beamwidth. Based on the analytical result, we show that the beamwidth should be optimized with respect to the link distance and the transmit power, and such optimization significantly suppresses the outage probability.
