Mentha piperita, as a species of the mint family, is used in various medical, cosmetic, industrial and culinary products. The effect of different concentrations of salicylic acid (SA) (0. 0.5, 1 mM) on phytochemical activity and antimicrobial potential of Mentha piperita essential oil against six human pathogenic bacteria (Streptococcus agalactiae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes) were investigated. According to the results to prevent the growth of L. monocytogenes and S. agalactiae, Gram-positive bacteria, peppermint, essential oil treatment with 1 mM salicylic acid is suggested. But to prevent the growth of Gram-negative bacteria P. aeruginosa and E. coli, peppermint essential oil of control plants is proposed. These results showed that salicylic acid elicitor changed the type and amount of peppermint essential oil compounds. Probably, salicylic acid elicitor improved antimicrobial properties of peppermint essential oil with a change in essential oil components. The poor quality of available feed resources is the major limiting factor for livestock production in Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the chemical composition of major feed resources in three agro-ecological zones (AEZs) of the Gera District, southwest Ethiopia. Three representative samples of natural pasture (Cynodon dactylon, Pavonia schimperiana Hochst and Rhynchosia ferruginea), three indigenous fodder trees and shrubs (IFTSs) (Erythrina abyssinica, Vernonia amygdalina and Maytenus undat), two cultivated forages (Pennisetum purpureum and Pennisetum pedicellatum) and five crop residues (Hordeum vulgare (barley), Zea mays (maize), Sorghum bicolor (sorghum), Triticum aestivum (wheat) and Eragrostis tef (Teff)) were randomly and separately collected from the Highland (HL), midland (ML) and lowland (LL) AEZs. The samples were analyzed for ash, dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), ether extract (EE), and acid detergent lignin (ADL) content using standard analytical methods. The results showed that AEZ significant (P < 0.05) affected the chemical composition parameters of most of the feed samples. Regardless of the feed sample and AEZs, the mean DM, CP, ash, EE, NDF, ADF, ADL and CF content varied from 89.17% in Pennisetum purpureum to 92.22 ± 0.51 in Erythrina abyssinica, 2.90 ± 0.22% in Triticum aestivum to 10.70 ± 0.52 in Vernonia amygdalina, 7.24 ± 0.19% in Sorghum bicolor to 13.25 ± 0.51% in Pavonia Schimperiana Hochst, 1.33 ± 0.04% in Triticum aestivum to 2.39 ± 0.15% in Maytenus undata, 57.65 ± 1.19% in Erythrina Abyssinica to 79.16 ± 1.04% in Triticum aestivum, 34.57% in Pennisetum purpureum to 59.41 ± 0.98% in Sorghum bicolor, 8.15 ± 0.62% in Rhynchosia ferruginea to 12.65 ± 0.57% in Triticum aestivum and 37.51% in Pennisetum pedicelatum to 69.93 ± 0.65% DM in Triticum aestivum, respectively. It was observed that IFTSs had the highest CP and the lowest NDF, implying their potential for protein supplement, whereas crop residues had the lowest CP and the highest NDF, indicating the need for their treatment using urea or supplementing animals with protein source feeds, especially during the dry season. In conclusion, AEZ has an influence on the chemical composition traits of feed resources attributed to its effects on the microclimate conditions that affect plant growth and maturation in the study sites. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the production of gases, temperature, fermentation characteristics, chemical composition and aerobic stability of Tanzânia grass haylage wrapped in films of different thicknesses. Gas production and temperature were evaluated on storage days in 4 × 5 factorial scheme (four films: 27, 10, 11 and 13 µm and five storage times: 0, 7, 15, 30 and 60 days). Fermentation characteristics were evaluated in 4 × 4 factorial scheme (four films: 27, 10, 11 and 13 µm and four storage times: 7, 15, 30 and 60 days). Aerobic stability was evaluated in 4 × 3 factorial scheme (four films: 27, 10, 11 and 13 µm and three times of exposure to air: 0, 48 and 96 h). The lowest pH value of the evaluated haylages was found at 60 days. The largest population of lactic acid bacteria and smallest populations of enterobacteria were observed in the haylage wrapped in the film of 13 µm at 60 days. The haylage wrapped in the film of 13 µm had the highest values of dry matter and crude protein. When using Tanzânia grass for haylage making, it is recommended to use the polyvinyl chloride film of 13 µm and storage time of 60 days. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alcoholic beverages are widely consumed around the world. However, excessive alcohol consumption is harmful to human health, which can cause a series of health problems. Herbals with antioxidant activity as antialcoholic agents have a long history in Asia. In this study, we made a Noni complex beverage (NCB) using Noni and nine other plant materials, which has a potential antialcoholic effect. The total flavonoid content (TFC) and total phenolic content (TPC) were analyzed, and then the antioxidant activities in vitro and antialcoholic effects in vivo were assessed. The results showed that NCB contains TFC of 0.543 ± 0.001 mg/mL and TPC of 1.685 ± 0.029 mg/mL, with significant antioxidant activity in vitro. Furthermore, NCB also showed a good antialcoholic effect in mice. Whether before or after alcohol intake, the consumption of NCB could significantly extend the drunken latency time, shorten the sobriety time, and decrease the blood alcohol concentration compared with the model group. Analysis of the antialcoholic mechanism demonstrated that NCB can remarkably increase the activity of superoxide dismutase, improve glutathione level, and reduce malondialdehyde content, thereby combating oxidative stress caused by alcohol, maintaining the stability of the intracellular antioxidant defense system, and alleviating liver damage; In addition, NCB can upregulate the activities of alcohol dehydrogenase and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase and accelerate alcohol metabolism, thus decreasing the blood alcohol concentration, shortening the sobriety time, and lowering the risk of liver damage caused by alcohol. The essential oils were isolated from Thymus serpyllum L. leaves, stem, flowers and whole plant using hydrodistillation technique and % yield was determined. The chemical constituents were studied using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry and Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionisation Detection. The analysis revealed the presence of 38 compounds in the essential oils obtained from different plant parts. Identification of compounds was achieved by detailed analysis of mass spectrum and retention indices. The major constituents of essential oil from the whole plant were thymol (35.25%), p-cymene (27.57%), thymol acetate (8.03%) and γ-terpinene (6.92%). In leaves they were thymol (45.59%), p-cymene (24.26%), thymol acetate (6.41%), and β-bisabolene (5.91%); whereas in flowers these were thymol (68.74%) and thymol acetate (7.40%) and in the stem, these were thymol (55.15%) and thymol acetate (8.01%). Specifically, it is the first report wherein essential oil constituents of T. serpyllum L. whole plant, leaves, flowers, and stems have been analyzed separately. Further, fundamental analysis of complex mass fragmentation patterns of terpenes and terpenoids using EI-MS has been achieved and the logical reason for the fragmentation pattern has been elaborated. Ras Muhammad National Park, located at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt, is well-known for its unique marine biodiversity. One interesting region of the park is the Earthquake Crack, a tidal-influenced inland cave formed by a 1968 earthquake, that known for its rich seaweed community, with dominance of Codium dwarkense. This study evaluates the bioactive compounds and bioactivities of C. dwarkense from the crack region. The sample were collected, processed, and assessed for hydrographic parameters, nutritional composition, minerals, bioactive compounds, and bioactivity. Results showed high levels of carbohydrates and significant mineral content, with potassium and calcium being predominant. C. dwarkense also showed considerable amounts of vitamin C (32.4 mg/100g), vitamin E (400 mg/100g), phenolics (250.08 mg GAE/g), and flavonoids (85.4 mg rutin/g). The HPLC profile was dominated with quercetin, apigenin, pyrogallol, zeaxanthin, and benzoic acid. The GC-MS analyses identified several fatty acids, which were dominated with Hexadecanoic acid and Oleic acid. Bioactivity assays demonstrated significant antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities. This study highlights the influence of the unique features of the Earthquake Crack region on C. dwarkense ability to produce valuable bioactive compounds with diverse health benefits. Expansive soils are characterized by significant swelling and shrinkage due to changes in water content, which could threaten the safety of buildings. In this study, an electrochemical treatment method was used to modify bentonite, with subsequent analysis focused on evaluating the alterations in its physical and chemical properties. The electrical resistance between the soil and the electrodes was significantly reduced by injecting a CaCl2 solution, leading to a substantial decrease in voltage loss at the anode. The thickness of the electrical double layer decreased as the Na+ cations adsorbed by smectite particles were exchanged by Ca2+ ions, which significantly decreased the water adsorption and free swelling ratio. The electrochemical treatment method removed more pore water from soil samples than the electroosmotic consolidation method. Furthermore, the results indicated that the injection of a CaCl2 solution could be effective in restraining the swelling potential of bentonite. The most suitable concentration for CaCl2 solution to modify bentonite by electrochemical treatment method might be 1 mol/L, and the injection volume could be 125 mL/L of soil. The processes in polymer films based on polypropylene containing fluorinated additives during modification of films in corona discharge plasma are studied. The chemical composition, relief, adhesion and deformation properties of the film surface before and after modification in plasma were studied using the methods of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. It has been established that in films under the influence of corona discharge plasma migration of the fluoropolymer additive to the surface occurs. In this case, the chemical composition and structure of the film changes, and local structures containing oxygen, fluorine and carbon atoms are formed on the surface. Local structures have an electrical resistance that is different from the electrical resistance of the surface of the original film. BACKGROUND RESULTS CONCLUSION Owing to their health benefits, walnuts are attracting interest as a good option for nutritious meals, thereby promoting their production. Furthermore, the adoption of ecologically and environmentally friendly agriculture strengthens biostimulant use as a sustainable complement to traditional fertilizers. This study evaluated the effects of different foliar‐applied biostimulants in walnut tree orchards, in northeastern Portugal, on walnuts' chemical composition and bioactivity.Walnut samples were rich in fat (particularly the polyunsaturated linoleic acid), dietary fiber and protein. Sucrose was the most prevalent soluble sugar, followed by glucose and fructose. Studied samples also showed an antioxidant activity comparable (or superior) to that of Trolox. Some plant biostimulants (e.g. Sprint Plus®) had a positive impact on the nutritional composition of walnuts, more specifically by boosting tocopherol levels, besides improving the bioactivity of walnut extracts against specific bacteria.Overall, this research demonstrated that important quality traits of walnuts can be improved using sustainable agricultural bioproducts and practices. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. Lead–free Sn–halide perovskites (Sn–HPs) are attractive photomaterials due to their lower toxicity, and some of them with higher stability against moisture and water, compared to their Pb‐based analogous. Interestingly, Sn‐HPs can exhibit two types of optical characteristics: the first scenario is known as band‐edge electron transitions [or band‐to‐band (b‐b) emission], where accumulated electrons in the conduction band recombine with holes in the valence band, providing a close separation between the absorption edge/photoluminescence (PL) peak (small Stokes shift). The second scenario is denominated as self‐trapped exciton (STE), where intraband gap energy states are formed to trap photocarriers generated in the perovskite, producing a broadband PL and a large Stokes shift. These optical features have been suitable for developing prominent devices, but there is no consolidated explanation about the key factors influencing the emergence of b–b emission or STE in Sn‐HPs, mainly the presence of these PL mechanisms in a particular perovskite system. This review highlights how the chemical composition, structural defects, and synthetic procedures are pivotal to producing Sn‐HPs with specific b–b or STE features. This will allow the preparation of Sn‐HPs with better quality/stability, and facile modulation of their PL properties, expanding their future applicability in LCD technologies. Coal gasification fine slag (CGFS) is a large solid waste in the field of coal chemical industry, and its land occupation and environmental pollution caused by stockpiling and landfill make its comprehensive utilization imminent. The composition and structure of CGFS is the basis of its resource utilization, particle size classification and density classification is the important means to achieve the separation and enrichment of components in CGFS, while there are significant differences in the properties of CGFS in different particle size and different density fractions. Therefore, a CGFS sample from Shaanxi, China was used as an example in this paper, and X-ray diffraction analyzer (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and low-temperature N2 adsorption tester were applied to comprehensively analyze the compositional and structural properties of the raw as well as the graded (both size-graded and density-graded) samples. The results show that the proximate composition, mineral composition, elemental composition, surface functional groups, apparent morphology, and pore structure show a good regularity with the particle size and density of the samples. Meanwhile, these properties and their variations with particle size and density were analyzed for their implication in the separation of components and resource utilizations of CGFS. The current study is objected to investigate the essential oil yields, chemical compositions, and enantiomeric distribution of wild and cultivated linalool rich Origanum dubium Boiss. essential oils obtained at pre-flowering, initial flowering, and post-flowering growth stages. Wild plant materials are collected from Mediterranean region of Turkey. Samples were also cultivated in Mediterranean and Aegean coastlines of Turkey in the experimental fields of Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Turkey. O. dubium samples yielded between 6.7 and 9.7% (mL/100 g) of essential oils. The compositions were dominated by oxygenated monoterpenes (98.2–98.9%). Linalool was detected as the major compound in all essential oils (97.0–97.6%). The dominant enantiomer was discovered as (R)-(-)-linalool with a 99.3–99.4% enantiomeric purity. The essential oil yields, chemical compositions and enantiomeric distributions were found to be constant regardless of cultivation, geographical locations or different growth stages. The result of this manuscript indicates that by culturing linalool chemotype of O. dubium, the industrial need for (R)-(-)-linalool could be met at more affordable costs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chaenomeles speciosa (Sweet) Nakai (C. speciosa) is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine that possesses not only abundant nutritional value but also significant medicinal properties. The extracts of C. speciosa fruits effectively reduce urate levels, but the specific chemical constituents responsible for this effect in C. speciosa fruits are still unknown. Therefore, this study aims to investigate and analyze the structure–activity relationships of these constituents to better understand their ability to lower uric acid. Activity-guided fractionation and purification processes were used to isolate compounds with xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitory activity from C. speciosa fruits, resulting in three extracts: petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol. The ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions showed strong activity and underwent further separation and purification using chromatographic techniques. Twenty-four compounds were isolated and identified, with nine showing potent activity, including chlorogenic acid, methyl chlorogenate, butyl chlorogenate, ethyl chlorogenate, cryptochlorogenic acid methyl ester, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, benzoic acid and protocatechuic acid. The docking analysis showed that these compounds interacted with amino acid residues in the active site of XO through hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. These findings suggest that these compounds help reduce uric acid in C. speciosa, supporting further investigation into their mechanism of action. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Feeding sloths (Bradypus sp.) in captivity can be extremely challenging due to their individually selective folivorous diet and preferences for specific plant species. This selectivity complicates nutritional management and can lead to diseases associated with an unbalanced diet. By using an in vitro fermentation technique, we evaluated the nutritional characteristics of three feeds for captive sloths by incubating samples of these feeds with the stomach contents of sloths. Our findings indicate that the leaves of plants from the genera Pterodon sp. and Inga sp. show potential for feeding Bradypus variegatus sloths in captivity, with particular emphasis on the former, which demonstrated the best results for protein digestibility, fiber digestion rates, and total fermentation gas volume. We recommend careful attention to the fiber content of Cecropia sp. plants due to possible negative effects on dry matter intake. It is suggested that this plant be fed in combination with other feeds containing less fiber to allow for selection by the animals. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritive value of three feeds (Cecropia sp., Pterodon sp., and Inga sp.) for sloths (Bradypus variegatus), based on nutritional composition and in vitro gas production. After a 14-day adaptation period to these feeds, approximately 500 g of gastric contents were collected from three female sloths, processed, and incubated with the food samples to evaluate digestibility and in vitro degradation kinetics. Regarding the nutritional composition, the neutral detergent fiber (NDFcp) content was higher with 404 g kg−1 DM (p = 0.001) in the leaves of Cecropia sp. The non-fibrous carbohydrate contents were greater with 499 g kg−1 DM in Pterodon sp. (p = 0.002). The greatest cellulose content (211 g kg−1 DM) was found in the leaves of C. pachystachya, as well as the lowest value of 143 g kg−1 DM for hemicellulose. Significant differences in the in vitro digestibility of crude protein (p = 0.041) were observed, with Inga sp. showing the highest value at 547 g kg−1 DM. In terms of kinetic parameters, Pterodon sp. exhibited higher total gas production (Vt) at 99 mL (p = 0.023) and digestion rates of fibrous carbohydrates (kdFC) at 0.0223%/h (p = 0.020) (p < 0.05). The leaves of Pterodon sp. and Inga sp. showed potential as suitable feeds for B. variegatus, while Cecropia sp. may have negative effects on dry matter intake due to its high NDF content, because of possible repletion effects on the stomach. The fermentation process is a crucial stage in the production of salami-type sausages. However, the traditional ("warm") method does not yield optimal results. Hence, this study evaluated the impact of fermentation technology and storage time on the quality attributes of salami-type pork sausages. "Warm"-fermented (WF) and "cold"-fermented (CF) sausages were produced using appropriate starter cultures. Following ripening, the products were stored for 63 days under cooling conditions. The evaluations encompassed microbiological and physicochemical characteristics (pH, aw, color), basic chemical composition (NIR spectroscopy), the degree of fat hydrolysis (acid value) and oxidation (TBARS index), textural properties (TPA, shear/penetration test), and sensory (hedonic) attributes. In both sausages, mesophilic aerobes and lactic acid bacteria were the dominant microflora immediately after ripening. While the chemical composition of the salami remained constant during storage, there was a slight color change. WF sausages exhibited a significantly higher acid value and TBARS index than CF sausages. Over time, the internal structure of WF sausages became more porous, deteriorating the texture. In addition, CF sausages showed better sensory characteristics. In conclusion, using "cold" fermentation enhanced the quality and durability of salami-type sausages. The restriction of lead content in alloys for the production of solder, based on the Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council of the European Union of 8 June 2011, which is also known as RoHS (Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment), had a very positive impact on research into lead-free solder alloys, as well as on the economic impact of the production of solders. It opened the door to issues relating to the mechanical properties of lead-free solders and the microhardness of formed joints, with the aim of increasing their quality and efforts to reduce production costs. In addition to the production efficiency increase, without the need for the manual removal of so-called slagging, the moderation of oxide formation on the melt surface, standing for an increase in the yield of the total amount of solder, represents one of the many factors influencing the production of lead-free alloys for tin-based soldering. This work deals with the issues of material selection for the production of lead-free solders. Temperature affects the formation of different phases when there is a change in the concentration of the elements involved because it can be a negative aspect for soldering. Fermentation is the oldest biotechnology in which a metabolic process carried out without the involvement of oxygen. It is one of the food processing methods that improve the nutrient contents and sensorial properties with potentially reducing or eliminating pathogenic microorganisms and natural toxins. The aim of this review is to compare, contrast and summarize the scientific data on the effect of fermentation on physicochemical properties, anti-nutritional factors and sensory properties of cereal-based fermented foods and beverages. The results of this review showed that fermentation improves the nutritional value of some proximate composition such as crude protein and fat contents, while decreases the carbohydrate and crude fiber contents. It also improves the bioavailability, antioxidant activities and sensory properties of cereal-based foods and beverages. This review concluded that fermentation improves the nutritional quality of proximate composition, bioavailability of minerals and phytochemicals, and decrease the anti-nutritional factors of cereal-based fermented foods and beverages. Forsythia koreana Nakai is an ornamental plant widely cultivated in East Asia. The essential oil of F. koreana flowers (FEO) was extracted by hydrodistillation process and the volatile components were determined with gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The anti-inflammatory activity of FEO was investigated by using TPA-induced mouse ear inflammation model. The major components of FEO were identified as n-tetracosane (29.85%), n-heneicosane (17.45%), myristic acid (8.46%) and palmitaldehyde (6.22%). The TPA-induced mouse ear edema, water content, dermis thickness, epidermis thickness and nitric oxide production were decreased by FEO. Our findings suppose that the flower essential oil of F. koreana exerted anti-inflammatory activity, and may be used in the development of anti-inflammatory products in future. Summary The proximate composition, selected amino acid composition, and chemical constituents of Spirogyra neglecta (Hassall) Kützing, a freshwater algae collected from Phrae province, Thailand was investigated. It was found to be a good source of protein (29.42% dry wt. basis) and fibre (6.70% dry wt. basis). The total amino acid content was 2611.85 mg/100 g edible. The chemical constituents were characterised by GC–MS, which demonstrated that it contained phytol (62.10%), ethyl 5,8,11,14,17‐icosapentaenoate (8.55%) among others. Based on its chemical composition results, it could serve as a potential ingredient with high nutritional values in the food and nutraceutical industry. Furthermore, the descriptive sensory profile consisting of 17 descriptors, namely, green colour, glossy, filamentous, aroma (algae, grassy, fishy, and earthy), flavour (algae, grassy, fishy, and earthy), sweet, bitter, and texture (fibrousness and softness), mouthfeel (entire mouth‐coating), and aftertaste (astringent), were successfully developed to allow characterisation of the sensory quality of this algae. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) oil is attracting more interest for its nutritional as well as functional potentials. Nevertheless, its potential as new and innovative food component remains largely unexplored. This review aims to outline the chemical composition, extraction methods, and health advantages of krill oil, offering insights for its utilization and provides evidence why it is now on the spotlight. Krill oil presents a distinctive fat profile, rich in lipid classes, with phospholipids (PLs) comprising a significant portion (38.93—79.99%) with high levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Additionally, it includes several minor bioactive components like astaxanthin, tocopherols, sterols, flavonoids, and vitamin A. Various extraction technics, including solvent and solvent-free extraction, enzyme-assisted pretreatment extraction, super/subcritical fluid extraction, significantly influence both output as well as standard of the resulting product. Furthermore, the oil had been linked to a number of health advantages, including prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD), anti-inflammatory effects, support for women's physiology, anticancer activities, as well as neuroprotection, among others. Despite the commercial availability of krill oil products as dietary supplement, there is a scarcity of studies exploring the underlying molecular mechanisms responsible for its various biological activities. Despite this, apply krill oil as an innovative food ingredient has not been thoroughly investigated. This review consolidates information on the chemical composition, extraction techniques, possible health advantages, as well as existing uses as applications, aiming to offer insights for its complete exploitation. In order to explore the adaptability of cigar planting in Yimen County, cigar planting test was carried out in three core tobacco areas of Yimen County. The agronomic traits, disease occurrence, appearance quality, chemical composition and yield of cured tobacco leaves were observed and analyzed. Results showed that the cigar grew well, no serious diseases occurred, the appearance quality of tobacco was good, the chemical composition was coordinated, the yield was suitable, and it was feasible to grow cigar. The plant height, stem circumference, maximum leaf length and leaf area index of Lvzhi Town were significantly higher than those of other areas, the appearance quality score was higher, the chemical composition indexes were higher than other areas except protein, and the yield was 2 000. 25 kg / hm², which was significantly different from other areas. Angelicae sinensis radix (ASR) and Angelicae pubescentis radix (APR), as traditional herbal medicines, are often confused and doped in the material market. However, the traditional identification method is to characterize the whole herb with a single or a few components, which do not have representation and cannot realize the effective utilization of unknown components. Consequently, the result is not convincing. In addition, the whole process is time-consuming and labor-intensive. To avoid the confusion and adulteration of ASR and APR as well as to strengthen quality control and improve identification efficiency, in this study, a UHPLC-QTOF-MSE method was used to analyze ASR and APR. Based on digital representation, the shared data with high ionic strength were extracted from different batches of the same herbal medicine as their "digital identity". Further, the above "digital identity" was used as the benchmark for matching and identifying unknown samples to feedback on matching credibility (MC). The results showed that based on the "digital identities" of ASR and APR, the digital identification of two herbal samples can be realized efficiently and accurately at the individual level. And the matching credibility (MC) was higher than 94.00%, even if only 1% of APR or ASR in the mixed samples can still be identified efficiently and accurately. The study is of great practical significance for improving the efficiency of the identification of ASR and APR, cracking down on adulterated and counterfeit drugs, and strengthening the quality control of ASR and APR. In addition, it has important reference significance for developing nontargeted digital identification of herbal medicines at the individual level based on UHPLC-QTOF-MSE and "digital identity", which is beneficial to the construction of digital Chinese medicine and digital quality control. Objective. To evaluate the physicochemical composition and nutritional value of goat milk produced in three different small-scale production management systems in Merida, Yucatan in Mexico, to produce milk for human consumption for people with lactose intolerance problems. Materials and methods. Samples were collected every two weeks for four months, and their fat, protein, lactose, total solids, ash, calcium, and phosphorus contents were quantified. Density, pH, acidity, fatty acid profiles by gas chromatography, and the electrophoretic pattern of caseins were determined. Results. The average composition was 2.69% fat, 4.10% protein, 4.12% lactose, 12.96% total solids, 0.83% ash, 139 mg/100g calcium, and 105 mg/100g phosphorus. The density, acidity as lactic acid, and pH obtained were 1.032 g/cm3, 1.36 g/L, and 6.51, respectively. The milk provided MUFAs, such as oleic and gadoleic acids, and PUFAs, such as linoleic and arachidonic acid, involved in metabolic processes that reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome. The electrophoretic pattern of the caseins showed more abundant bands, with molecular weights of 20 to 36 kDa. Conclusions. The composition of the goat milk produced was superior, having nutritional advantages and potential health benefits compared to milk from other species. The lactose content, pH, and acidity of goat milk differed depending on the production units, and density, fat, protein, and ash were not influenced. The current work aimed to evaluate the effect of ensiling density on the fermentation quality and aerobic stability of Pennisetum giganteum silages. The silage was ensiled in laboratory silos (1 L), and three treatments were designed according to different ensiling densities: (1) low density (LD, 750 kg/m3); (2) medium density (MD, 900 kg/m3); and (3) high density (HD, 1050 kg/m3). During ensiling, the silage was sampled for a fermentation quality analysis. All silages were well preserved, as indicated by the high lactic acid (LA) content and low pH (<4.2). The MD treatment had the highest acetic acid content (24.9 g/kg dry matter) and the HD treatment had the lowest ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) content (68.2 g/kg total nitrogen, TN) among all silages after 45 days of ensiling. The aerobic stability of HD, MD, and LD persisted for 51 h, 54 h, and 48 h, respectively. The NH3-N contents of HD and MD were below 80 g/kg TN during aerobic exposure. Simple Summary: Sexual reproduction in Cordyceps sensu lato is regulated by the mating-type locus, which has two alternate idiomorphs: MAT1-1 and MAT1-2. Ophiocordyceps xuefengensis, a heterothallic Cordyceps used as a traditional tonic by the Yao ethnic group in southern China, produces sterile fruiting bodies regardless of whether it is the MAT1-1 or MAT1-2 strain. However, the impact of mating types on the quality of these fruiting bodies is not well understood. In this study, we developed a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method that quickly and efficiently distinguishes between MAT1-1 and MAT1-2 strains of O. xuefengensis, with advantages including a short duration (1 h or less), visual detection, and the elimination of the need for a thermal cycler and gel electrophoresis. We also systematically compared biochemical contents of the fruiting bodies from MAT1-1 and MAT1-2 strains. Our findings show that the MAT1-1 strain of O. xuefengensis is a promising alternative for natural Cordyceps production, as it contains higher levels of adenosine and essential amino acids, as well as lower levels of toxic elements in the fruiting bodies compared to the MAT1-2 strain. This study provides a new approach to addressing issues related to unstable artificial cultivation, long cultivation periods, and high heavy metal content in Cordyceps. Many Cordyceps sensu lato species are used as traditional Chinese medicines. However, Cordyceps are entomopathogenic fungi in the family Clavicipitaceae of Ascomycota, and excessive harvesting severely disrupts natural habitat ecosystems. Artificial cultivation of Cordyceps fruiting bodies offers a viable strategy to protect the ecological environment and mitigate the depletion of wild resource. In this study, mononucleate hyphae were selected using DAPI fluorescence staining, the MAT1-1 and MAT1-2 strains of O. xuefengensis were successfully distinguished using loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). The chemical composition and bioactive components of fruiting bodies produced by these strains were compared. Results showed that the levels of adenosine, thymidine, adenine, guanosine, uridine, total amino acids, and total essential amino acids in the fruiting bodies of MAT1-1 strains were 1.31 mg/g, 0.15 mg/g, 0.26 mg/g, 2.40 mg/g, 2.34 mg/g, 270.3 mg/g, and 102.5 mg/g, respectively, which were significantly higher than those in the MAT1-2 sample. Contrastingly, the fruiting bodies of MAT1-2 strains contained higher levels of mannose and polysaccharides, at 11.7% and 12.2%, respectively. The levels of toxic elements such as Al, Pb, As, and Hg in the MAT1-1 fruiting bodies were 1.862 mg/kg, 0.0848 mg/kg, 0.534 mg/kg, and 0.0054 mg/kg, respectively, which were markedly lower than those in the MAT1-2 fruiting bodies. This paper demonstrates the suitability of Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis (PGAA) technique for the compositional study of ancient glass finds, illustrating this idea by presenting and commenting the chemical composition of 41 Roman glass fragments discovered in archaeological excavations at Tomis, Histria, and Beidaud, Romania. According to typological and stratigraphic criteria, most finds were dated to the 1st-4th centuries AD. The PGAA measurements were performed at the Budapest Neutron Centre (BNC), Hungary. Regardless of their color (or the lack of it), most of the analyzed vitreous items have compositional traits often encountered in coeval glass artefacts discovered at various sites all over the Roman Empire. The sample set turned out to include several examples of Foy Série 2.1 and a single HIMT glass item, in agreement with the later chronological attribution of the corresponding fragments. This study provides some information about the chemistry of the Roman glass finds unearthed during the archaeological research performed in the region of the western Black Sea coast. Morus alba L. is a tradition medical and edible plant. It is rich in many important bioactive components. However, there is a dearth of systematic information about the components. Here, the Mori Cortex, Mori Folium, Mori Fructus, and Mori Ramulus were studied. Ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS) is used to study primary and secondary metabolites. Eight hundred two metabolites were identified and classified into 10 different categories in total. Correlation analysis, hierarchical clustering analysis, and principal component analysis of metabolites showed that different parts of the sample could be significantly different. In different medicinal parts, alkaloids accounted for 4.0%, 3.6%, 5.1%, and 4.5%; flavonoids accounted for 0.7%, 27.2%, 5.6%, 1.2%; terpenes accounted for 20.1%, 2.1%, 2.6%, 2.5%. Furthermore, the abundance of phenols, phenylpropanoids, and lipids metabolites sequentially accounted for 2.3–4.4%, 0.5–1.8%, and 2.4–5.3%. These results have improved our understanding of metabolites and provided a reference for research on the medicinal and edible value of Morus alba L. In addition, the study reveals the correlation between the components of Traditional Chinese medicine and the basic theory of TCM properties and reinterprets the ancient wisdom in the world's traditional herbs through the perspective of modern science. Considerable efforts have been made to replace formaldehyde-containing adhesives in the manufacturing of wood products, particularly particleboard, with natural alternatives. One promising solution is the liquefaction of lignocellulosic materials such as wood using glycerol (C3H8O3) under sulfuric acid catalysis (H2SO4). The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical composition and properties of spruce and oak biomass after liquefaction and to evaluate its potential as a formaldehyde-free adhesive substitute. All samples were liquefied at 150 °C for 120 min in five different wood–glycerol ratios (1:1 to 1:5). The liquefaction percentage, the insoluble residue, the dry matter and the hydroxyl (OH) number were determined as characteristic values for the polymer properties of the liquefied samples. The results showed the liquefaction percentage was up to 90% for spruce and oak. The insoluble residue ranged from 10 to 29% for spruce and from 10 to 22% for oak, the dry matter ranged from 54 to 70% for spruce and from 51 to 62% for oak, while the highest xydroxyl number was 570 mg KOH/g for spruce and 839 mg KOH/g for oak. Based on these results, liquefied wood was shown to be an effective natural alternative to synthetic resins in particleboard adhesives and a way to reduce formaldehyde emissions. This research not only supports environmentally sustainable practices but also paves the way for various bioproducts derived from liquefied biomass and points to future avenues for innovation and development in this area. Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus is a small-sized fish, and it is difficult to obtain its flesh by hand. To enhance the utilization of this fish, this study aims to determine the effect of extraction methods on the amino acid, mineral, and fatty acid profile of recovered protein (RP) from Japanese anchovy, as well as the functional properties of RP. The protein was extracted from minced fish by three methods, including salt water treatment (RP-S) and pH-shifted processes at both acidic (RP-A) and basic (RP-B) solubilization. All RPs had more total essential amino acids than minced fish. Among RP, the highest Na and Fe content was found in RP-S, whereas RP-A showed the highest calcium content. RP-S possessed a lower amount of total polyunsaturated fatty acids than that of RP-A and RP-B. Water- and oil-absorption capacity and foam stability of RP-S and RP-B were on the same level and higher than those of RP-A. The highest emulsion activity index and emulsion stability index was found in RP-B. However, no difference was found in emulsion stability index between RP-S and RP-A. This study investigates the correlation between both the chemical compositions and physicochemical properties of pretreated oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fibre and their enzymatic saccharification/total glucose yield (TGY). Twenty OPEFB samples, pretreated with various aqueous pretreatments, with diverse cellulose (25.63–44.23%), hemicellulose (0.01–42.49%), and lignin (3.7–47.1%) levels, were examined for their correlation with TGY (8.5–40%). The quadratic regression model was verified significant (p-value = 0.0006, R2 = 0.8006). It was found that the pre-refined OPEFB experienced greater cellulose loss (35%) compared to unrefined ones (9%), adversely affecting TGY. Among physicochemical properties analysed using SEM, FTIR, XRD, Py-GCMS, and XPS, only crystallinity index (CrI) was significantly correlated with TGY based on theoretical glucose concentration (TGC) (R2 = 0.77, 0.91). Other characteristics (morphology, functional groups, crystallite size, S/G ratio, and O/C ratio) exhibited no significant correlation to saccharification efficiency, exhibiting random trends (R2 < 0.5). OPEFB fibres with CrI of 30–40 could achieve 100% TGY based on TGC. In conclusion, regardless of pretreatments, chemical compositions predominantly affected TGY in the enzymatic saccharification of biomass. Among commonly used physicochemical analytical methods, CrI is most significant in this evaluation and OPEFB should be unrefined before treatment to avoid cellulose loss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Asphalt aging is a natural process that causes changes in the properties of asphalt, particularly in asphalt adhesion. Previous studies show that the effect of aging on asphalt adhesion performance is not uniform and depends on the asphalt source and aging conditions. To investigate the effects of different SARA (saturates, aromatics, resins, and asphaltenes) ratios and structural changes on the adhesive properties of asphalt after aging, this study employs molecular dynamics simulation to calculate asphalt properties such as density, viscosity, and work of adhesion. The above properties were computed for 12 categories of asphalt molecules, individual SARA components, and asphalt models characterised by diverse SARA ratios, followed by a correlation analysis. The study reveals that asphalt aging increases density, viscosity, and adhesion to silica. The increase in polar functional groups, namely ketone and sulfoxide, is responsible for the enhanced adhesion of asphalt to silica due to the resulting increase in electrostatic potential energy. Different SARA ratios lead to different asphalt properties, with the RA/SA index ((asphaltene%+resin%)/(saturate% + aromatic%)) showing a better correlation with the properties. Positive correlations were observed among density, viscosity, and work of adhesion. This study advances our understanding of chemical and structural effects on aged asphalt properties. The main active constituents of plants of the Paeonia genus are known to have antitumor activity. Hundreds of compounds with a wide range of pharmacological activities, including monoterpene glycosides, flavonoids, tannins, stilbenes, triterpenoids, steroids, and phenolic compounds have been isolated. Among them, monoterpenes and their glycosides, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and other constituents have been shown to have good therapeutic effects on various cancers, with the main mechanisms including the induction of apoptosis; the inhibition of tumor cell proliferation, migration, and invasion; and the modulation of immunity. In this study, many citations related to the traditional uses, phytochemical constituents, antitumor effects, and clinical applications of the Paeonia genus were retrieved from popular and widely used databases such as Web of Science, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and PubMed using different search strings. A systematic review of the antitumor constituents of the Paeonia genus and their therapeutic effects on various cancers was conducted and the mechanisms of action and pathways of these phytochemicals were summarised to provide a further basis for antitumor research. Objectives: Immortelle has garnered global attention for its cosmetic, medicinal, and culinary applications worldwide. Apart from neryl acetate, α-pinene and γ-curcumene as the most important components for the estimation of the essential oil quality, in recent years a group of β -diketones, known as italidiones, appear as significant quality parameters. However, it is unknown how weather conditions (temperature and precipitation) influence their accumulation in essential oil and hydrosol, nor their anti-inflammatory potential. Methods: This study investigates the chemical composition of immortelle essential oil and hydrosol over three successive years (2019/20, 2020/21, and 2021/22), by GC-FID and GC-MS analysis. In silico molecular docking model with Vascular Adhesion Protein-1 (VAP-1) was used for the simulation of the anti-inflammatory potential of italidiones, as well as other β -diketones present in immortelle essential oil and hydrosol. Results: During the three-year trial, it was established that essential oil compounds such as α -pinene, neryl acetate, and italicene were positively correlated with temperature and negatively correlated with precipitation, as well as β -diketones and total italidiones. Moreover, trans -caryophyllene, γ -curcumene, and ar -curcumene were in negative correlation with temperature, and a slight positive correlation with precipitation. On the other side, in the hydrosol the content of both total β -diketones and total italidiones was strongly negatively correlated with temperatures, and positively correlated with precipitation, which was the opposite of essential oil. Additionally, findings indicated that italidiones could bind the human VAP-1 protein in the vicinity of the topiquinone and block its function. Conclusion: Weather conditions affect variations in the accumulation of volatile compounds in essential oil and hydrosol, which in some cases can affect changes in olfactory characteristics, as well as criteria prescribed by standards, and even changes in biological activities. This study aims at investigating the chemical composition of root, stem and leaf essential oils from Ivorian Synedrella nodiflora, with the root oil being described for the first time. Sixty, fifty-one and forty-nine constituents were, respectively identified in the root, stem and leaf oils using a combination of GC(RI), GC-MS and 13C-NMR analyses. They accounted for 95.6–97.3%, 92.6–97.6% and 93.3–98.8% of the total composition, respectively. The main components of the root oil samples were γ-curcumene, (E)-β-caryophyllene, α-curcumene and curcuphenyl acetate. Three stem oil samples (S1, S2a, S3) were dominated by myrcene and limonene, while the most abundant components of sample S2b were thymol, germacrene D and β-elemene. (E)-β-caryophyllene and germacrene D were the major compounds of the leaf oil. Hierarchical cluster and principal component statistical analyses were performed and confirmed that the location does not influence the chemical composition. Group I consisted of the seven leaf oil samples, group II consisted of four stem oil samples and group III consisted of three root oil samples. The root oil composition differed considerably from the stem and leaf oil composition due to the presence of curcumene derivatives as major constituents. Sphagnum mosses play a significant role in peat formation and carbon sequestration in mire ecosystems. It is critical to investigate the productivity and chemical composition of different Sphagnum species in order to assess their role in the global carbon cycle and potential in light of climate change. The data on productivity and growth characteristics during the growing season, group chemical composition and elemental composition at the beginning and end of the growing season, as well as aspects of the pigment complex operation, were collected for four Sphagnum species: Sphagnum lindbergii Schimp., S. fuscum (Schimp.) Klinggr., S. divinum Flatberg & K. Hassel, and S. squarrosum Crome. High cover density and productivity, low ability to decompose, and constancy of the pigment complex of S. fuscum reflect a high degree of adaptation to the specific conditions of ridges. A constant chemical composition of S. lindbergii during the growing season can be explained by stable conditions of hollows that allow it to maintain its metabolic processes, but the light conditions in hollows bring the reaction of the pigment apparatus of this species closer to shaded S. divinum and S. squarrosum. This study aimed to investigate the variation in the chemical composition of Origanum compactum essential oils (EOs) from four geographically distinct locations. Additionally, we evaluated their antioxidant properties and potential inhibitory effects on acetylcholinesterase (AChE), tyrosinase, and α-glucosidase enzymes and their insecticidal proprieties. Notably, this research also marks the first examination of the mineral composition of O. compactum. The chemical composition was determined using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which identified thymol (28.72–80.39%), carvacrol (6.54–61.84%), p-cymene (0.27–8.64%), linalool (1.44–1.96%), and caryophyllene oxide (1.34–1.56%) as the major constituents. Concurrently, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) revealed significant levels of macro and microelements, including calcium (295.50–512.20 mg/kg), potassium (195.99–398.45 mg/kg), magnesium (59.70–98.45 mg/kg), and iron (43.55–112.60 mg/kg). The EOs demonstrated notable antiradical activities through DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power), and β-carotene bleaching assays. Regarding the insecticidal effect, all studied essential oils showed a significant toxicity against C. capitata adults, and the toxicity was dose and time dependent. The highest insecticidal effect was observed for O. compactum essential oils collected from Gouman (LC50 = 2.515 µL/mL, LC90 = 5.502 µL/mL) after 48 h of treatment. Furthermore, at a concentration of 1 mg/mL, the EOs exhibited strong inhibitory effects against AChE (84.75–94.01%), tyrosinase (84.75–94.01%), and α-glucosidase (79.90–87.80%), highlighting their potential as natural inhibitors of these enzymes. The essential oils of O. compactum contain components that could be used as a basis for synthetizing derivatives or analogs with potential medicinal applications and pest control properties. Pinus Roxhurghii Needles (PRN) from the Pinus Roxhurghii tree is abundantly available as biomass waste worldwide. The PRN biomass waste can be effectively utilized as natural fibers in the fabrication of biocomposites. In this study, Pinus Roxburghii Fibers (PRF) was extracted from PRN biomass waste and treated with an alkaline solution using sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The investigation was carried out in terms of physical, chemical, thermal, mechanical, and morphological characterizations on the extracted untreated pinus roxburghii fibers (UTPRF) and extracted alkali-treated pinus roxburghii fibers (ATPRF). Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy examination of UTPRF and ATPRF indicates that cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin functional groups were present in both ATPRF and UTPRF. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was used to determine the crystallinity index (CI) of both untreated UTPRF and ATPRF samples. The findings revealed that the highest CI increase occurred in the 5% ATPRF (50.92%) sample compared to the UTPRF sample (47.20%). The chemical examination also revealed an increase in cellulose content from 58.30 ± 0.72 to 65.48 ± 0.80% after alkali treatment. The thermal stability of UTPRF and ATPRF was evaluated using Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which demonstrated an increase of 18 °C in stage-II degradation and 5 °C in stage-III degradation upon alkali treatment. The 5% alkali-treated fiber has achieved maximum tensile strength of 72.59 ± 25.55 MPa with a tensile modulus of 1.85 ±.81 GPa. This study aims to obtain a sustainable substitute for man-made fibers using Sambucus ebulus L. as a reinforcement in the polymer composites. With this purpose, an extensive characterization of Sambucus ebulus L. stem fiber was performed. The chemical composition was obtained approximately as 76 wt.% cellulose, 66 wt.% hemicellulose, and 4.47 wt.% lignin. Scanning electron microscope analysis proved that the fibers are nonuniform and have rough surface along the length. The elemental composition was found as 58.67% carbon and 40.34% oxygen with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Furthermore, the fiber diameter was estimated as 759.41 µm with image processing from scanning electron microscope graphs of fibers. X-ray diffraction analysis verified the existence of crystalline cellulose having 72% crystalline index with 3.9 nm crystalline size. Functional groups of the fiber were determined with Fourier transform infrared analysis. A single fiber tensile test found out that the fibers have the mean tensile strength, elongation at break, and Young's modulus of 90.6 MPa, 6.45%, and 1.46 GPa, respectively. Moreover, the obtained fibers are thermally durable to 456.98 °C with thermogravimetric analysis. The results indicate that Sambucus ebulus L. stem fibers have the comparable properties to other natural cellulosic fibers. It is suggested to use Sambucus ebulus L. stem fiber in composites as reinforcement to substitute for man-made fibers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The role of runoff in providing nutrients to runon loci in deserts was not extensively explored. Here we report 2 years of measurements of the chemical composition of rain and runoff (three events for each year, which correspond to the long‐term runoff events) in plots that were constructed over four biocrust types in the Negev Desert, Israel. The enrichment ratios showed high variability, being high for K+ (3.7), moderately high for NH4+ (1.6) and slightly high for Mg2+ and SO42− (1.2). It was low for Cl− and NO3− (0.5), moderately lower for Ca2+ (0.7) and slightly lower for Na+ and HCO3− (0.8). When examined per rain event, significant higher concentrations were found for K+ and Mg2+ while NO3− exhibited significantly lower concentration. The high enrichment of K+ and the enrichment of Mg2+ may point to a biogenic origin. While K+ enrichment is suggested to result from K+ excretion by the cyanobacteria, bacteria, and possibly by the mosses following cell wetting and the K+ role in cell osmoregulation, decomposition and erosion of the chlorophyll pigment may result in Mg2+ release. On the other hand, the data point out that despite the crust capability to fix nitrogen and thus to provide its own needs for nitrogen, NO3− was depleted from the runoff water, a phenomena that may be explained by the crust preference to utilise available low‐cost nitrogen provided by rain. Due to runoff accumulation at small depressions within the interdune and at the dune‐interdune interface, runoff may contribute additional amount of nutrients to these habitats. For the dune‐interdune interface it may account for an addition of 273.8% and 35.3% of the total potassium and nitrogen, respectively. The addition of water and nutrients may have important contribution to the growth of the moss‐dominated biocrusts and the shrubs at the dune‐interdune interface, being responsible for the formation of 'mantles and islands of fertility' at the dune‐interdune interface. Balanites aegyptiaca is a multipurpose fruit tree that grows wild in many arid and semi-arid African areas; however, recent domestication efforts have been undertaken to protect the species from the threat of urbanization and climate change. Within this context, the impact of the domestication of Algerian B. aegyptiaca was evaluated on its seed oil, which is already valued as food. Hence, oils from wild and domesticated trees were comparatively investigated for their physicochemical and compositional quality. Both oil types had a good oxidative stability and met the requirements for human consumption in terms of the saponification index, the free acidity, and the peroxide value. Moreover, they showed a comparable FA composition, with high levels of oleic and linoleic acids, which are beneficial for the consumer's health. Domestication led to a statistically significant decrease in the tocopherols and polyphenols in the oil. The phytosterols and squalene were slightly lower in the domesticated oil than in the wild relative, although no statistically significant differences were observed. A comparable mineral profile was revealed and the minimal variations in the trace elements between the oils could be related to the natural variability in the seeds. Hopefully, this study will encourage the domestication of B. aegyptiaca as a sustainable strategy for enhancing its socioeconomic value in Algerian rural areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SUMMARY: Insects and their larvae have attracted attention as a sustainable alternative to traditional commodities in animal feeds. There are currently eight authorised insect species, where most of the research is taking place, the most prominent ones being the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) and the yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor). There are, however, many other alternatives, such as the superworm (Zophobas morio), which, although widely researched, have not yet been approved for use. This review provides a detailed examination of the chemical composition of these three insect species and their impact on broiler growth. Based on the analysis of recent scientific studies, it can be inferred that all three species demonstrate high protein content and a well-balanced composition of amino and fatty acids, along with substantial amounts of minerals, fibre and vitamins. Of particular note is their moderately low ash content, which enhances feed palatability, and the presence of essential minerals that can be further adjusted through substrate enrichment applications. All three species also present considerable amounts of vitamins and especially those of the vitamin B complex, enhancing various physiological functions. Should the challenges related to financial, risk and consumer acceptance factors be effectively managed, we can expect a swift advancement in the use of insects as feed ingredients in the very near future. Bamboo fibres, which are widely regarded as a contemporary environmentally sustainable resource, have been utilised in various industries including construction materials and packaging sectors. Malaysia possesses a diverse array of bamboo species, rendering it a significant resource for exploration. Five out of the 69 bamboo species discovered in Malaysia were selected for their suitability and availability in the pulp and paper industry, considering properties such as high cellulose content and long fibers. The objective of this study is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the morphological, physiochemical, thermal, and chemical properties of five specific bamboo species that are often found in Malaysia: Gigantochloa scortechinii (GS), Gigantochloa wrayi (GW), Gigantochloa levis (GL), Schizostachyum grande (SG) and Dendrocalamus asper (DA). Selected from a pool of 69 species based on their availability, these various types of bamboo were subjected to analysis using advanced scientific techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Furthermore, a chemical composition study was performed to clarify the presence of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and ash in all five species. By employing various analytical methodologies, this study investigates and records the properties offered by the bamboo species, providing a significant contribution to the comprehension and knowledge of their potential applications across diverse disciplines. Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) pose a safety risk due to their high specific energy density and toxic ingredients. Fire caused by LIB thermal runaway (TR) can be catastrophic within enclosed spaces where emission ventilation or occupant evacuation is challenging or impossible. The fine smoke particles (PM2.5) produced during a fire can deposit in deep parts of the lung and trigger various adverse health effects. This study characterizes the chemical composition of PM2.5 released from TR-driven combustion of cylindrical lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and pouch-style lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) LIB cells. Emissions from cell venting and flaming combustion were measured in real time and captured by filter assemblies for subsequent analyses of organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC), elements, and water-soluble ions. The most abundant PM2.5 constituents were OC, EC, phosphate (PO43−), and fluoride (F−), contributing 7–91%, 0.2–40%, 1–44%, and 0.7–3% to the PM2.5 mass, respectively. While OC was more abundant during cell venting, EC and PO43− were more abundant when flaming combustion occurred. These freshly emitted particles were acidic. Overall, particles from LFP tests had higher OM but lower EC compared to LCO tests, consistent with the higher thermal stability of LFP cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper introduces an innovative approach that enables the automated and precise prediction of steel's chemical composition based on the desired Jominy curve. The microstructure, and in fact the presence of martensite, is decisive for the hardness of the steel, so the study considered the occurrence of this phase at particular distances from the quenched end of the Jominy sample. Steels for quenching and tempering and case hardening were investigated. With the representative collected dataset of hardness values from the quenched end of the Jominy specimen, microstructure and chemical composition of steels, the complex regression model was made using supervised artificial neural networks. The balance between cost and required hardenability can be achieved through optimizing the chemical composition of steel. This model of designing steel with required hardenability can be of great benefit in the mechanical engineering and manufacturing industry. The model is verified experimentally. The wine market is affected by the origin of wines, but the current wine traceability system has some limitations. The idea of geographical authenticity and quality has increased as one of the most important parameters influencing consumers' preferences. Chemical parameters such as total polyphenolic content (TPC), alcohol and organic acid content (total acids, malic and tartaric acids), and antioxidant activity were observed in this work at 15 dry white wines of varieties Pinot blanc, Riesling, Sauvignon blanc, and Chardonnay, which originated from three different countries. FTIR and spectrophotometry methods (TPC and DPPH) were used and chemometric approaches such as ANOVA and PCA were selected as the most important for evaluation. In general, high levels of malic acid, TPC, and antioxidant activity were detected in Austrian wines. Pinot blanc, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon from the same producing region in Austria showed higher results. The higher overall acid concentration was a distinguishing feature of the Slovakian Sauvignon and Riesling varieties, particularly in the case of tartaric acid. Austrian samples showed significantly higher antioxidant activity compared to Hungarian Chardonnay (p = 0.002) and Sauvignon (p = 0.007), comparable to TPC. The activated carbons (ACs) derived from okara powder waste with high surface areas were modified with ammonia aqueous solution impregnation in an autoclave to enhance their CO2 adsorption properties. The impregnated ACs were characterized, where the chemical composition and properties of the ACs were analyzed by SEM-EDX and FTIR. Activated carbons were functionalized with ammonia aqueous solution (25%) through a hydrothermal process within 24, 48, and 72 h. The adsorption performance of CO2 onto carbon samples was experimentally evaluated through a TPD CO2 measurement. FTIR spectra confirm the N-containing in N-modified activated carbons and the presence of the –C=O stretch and N-H groups. CO2 uptakes of activated carbons are 0.24; 1.78; 2.24; and 1.26 mmol/g, which are relatively comparable with those of activated carbons studied in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AbstractPyropia spp. seaweeds are delicious and nutritious red algae widely consumed for a long history. However, due to the non-digestibility of cell wall components by the human intestinal tract, the bioaccessibility of the intracellular bioactive compounds is low. The current industrial processing of Pyropia spp. food by drying and roasting cannot break down the cell wall; however, studies indicate that fermentation of Pyropia spp. by food-derived microorganisms is an efficient processing method to solve this problem. This paper reviews research on the fermentation of Pyropia spp., including the manufacturing process, alterations in chemical composition, flavor properties, bioactivities, and mechanisms. Furthermore, the limitations and opportunities for developing Pyropia spp. fermentation food are explored. Studies demonstrated that key metabolites of fermented Pyropia spp. were degraded polysaccharides, released phenolic compounds and flavonoids, and formed amino acids, which possessed bioactivities such as antioxidant, anti-glycation, anti-diabetic, lipid metabolism regulation beneficial to human health. The increased bioactivities implied the promoted bioaccessibility of intracellular components. Notably, fermentation positively contributed to the safety of Pyropia spp. food. In conclusion, benefits in nutrition, flavor, bioactivity, and safety suggest that fermentation technology has a promising future for application in Pyropia spp. food industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
