The present work was conducted to determine the effects of organic acids (1 and 2% of sodium lactate, 0.5% potassium sorbate, 0.5% sodium citrate, and 1% sodium acetate) combined with ambient air and modified atmosphere packaging (HiOx: 80:20:0/O2:CO2:N2; CO: 0.4:30:69.60/CO:CO2:N2) on the quality parameters and shelflife of meatballs, and to evaluate the survival of Salmonella Typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes in inoculated meatballs stored at 4°C for 15 d. Results indicated that the organic acid combinations delayed the microbial growth, and improved the shelf-life of meatballs. Lipid oxidation was retarded with organic acid treatments, and the meatballs in CO-MAP did not exceed the spoilage level during the storage period. A difference of 1 - 2 log and 2 - 3 log units of S. Typhimurium and L. monocytogenes counts were recorded between the untreated and organic acids treated meatballs, respectively, with effectiveness in HiOx and CO-MAP. Enhancement in colour and textural properties was detected in the meatballs treated with combined organic acids and 2% sodium lactate. Moreover, the overall acceptability of 2% sodium lactate treated meatballs was rated more palatable by the panellists at the end of the storage. In conclusion, organic acid treatments combined with modified atmosphere packaging can maintain the storage properties of meatballs without influencing the sensory characteristics during refrigerated storage. Objective: Differences in individual muscle/fat volumes may change the effectiveness of chemotherapy. In this study, the relationship between trunkal muscle and fat volume and body mass index (BMI) obtained before receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NCT) in patients with breast cancer and complete pathological response (pCR) was investigated. Materials and Methods: The volumes of psoas, abdominal and paraspinal muscles, and trunkal subcutaneous and visceral fat were calculated using CoreSlicer AI 2.0 opensource program from the F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (CT) and CT images before NCT and postoperative pCR rates to NCT were recorded. Muscle/fat volumes and BMI prior to NCT were compared in terms of pathological pCR rates. Patients were followed up regularly for recurrence and survival. Results: Ninety-three patients were included with median (range) values for age, BMI, and body weights of 48 (28–72) years, 27 (16.8–51.6) kg/m2, and 71.94 (43–137) kg, respectively. The median follow-up time was 18.6 (6.7–59.6) months. No significant correlation was found between total muscle or fat volumes of patients with and without pCR. BMI [26.2 (16.8–51.6) kg/m2 vs. 24.6 (20.3–34.3) kg/m2, p = 0.03] and pCR rates in patients with low right-psoas muscle volume [11.74 (7.03–18.51) vs. 10.2 (6.71–13.36), p = 0.025] were significantly greater. A significant relationship was found between right psoas muscle volume and disease-free survival (DFS) (11.74 cm3 (7.03–18.51) vs. 10.2 cm3 (6.71–13.36), p = 0.025). However, no significant relationship was detected between total muscle-fat volume, BMI and overall survival and DFS (p>0.05). Conclusion: This is the first published study investigating the relationship between the pCR ratio and body muscle and fat volume measured by CoreSlicer AI 2.0 in patients with breast cancer who received NCT. No correlation was found between the pCR ratio and total muscle plus fat volume. However, these results need to be validated with larger patient series.

Abstract Background Surgery remains a priority for breast cancer treatment. This study aimed to compare the cosmetic outcomes of oncoplastic patients who had undergone breast-conserving surgery, mini-LDF (latissimus dorsi flap), and immediate implant reconstruction using both the Japanese scale and the BCCT.core (The Breast Cancer Conservative Treatment cosmetic results software) program and to validate this program. Patients and methods Patients who underwent surgery for breast cancer between 1997 and 2021 were retrospectively studied. Patients were divided into three groups: 1-those who had undergone breast-conserving surgery (245 patients, 71.3%), 2-those who had undergone mini-LDF after lumpectomy (38 patients, 11.02%), and 3- those who underwent reconstruction with implants after nipple-sparing mastectomy (61 patients, 17.68%). The patients were called for a follow-up examination, and their photos were taken. The photographs were shown to an independent breast surgeon and a plastic surgeon who was not included in the surgeries, and they were asked to evaluate and rate them according to the Japanese cosmetic evaluation scale. The same images were transferred to the computer and scored using BCCT.core. Results The plastic and breast surgeon evaluation results showed no significant difference between the three cosmetic techniques (p = 0.99, 0.98). The results of BCCT.core software measurements were similar to the results of plastic and breast surgeons (p: 0.43). Conclusion Patients are more knowledgeable about cosmetic outcomes and expect more objective data. In this study, we used 3 different cosmetic evaluation scales. We found that these techniques give results that are compatible with each other in terms of evaluating the work done in a more concrete way. For this reason, we recommend the use of such software, which offers objective results in a subjective field such as aesthetics and is very easy to apply.

This study investigated the potential of using stonepaste ceramics, which were widely preferred as a coating and decoration material on the facades of architectural buildings in ancient times and continues to be produced on a workshop scale today as a cladding material on building facades. Stonepaste ceramics, made from a mixture prepared with a high amount of crystalline quartz as well as frit, plastic clay, and bentonite raw materials, were hand-shaped and sintered at 930 °C after glazing. The physico-mechanical properties of stonepaste ceramics, their behaviour under various environmental conditions (resistance to chemicals, frost, and thermal shock), and their microstructures have been characterized. The characterization results were compared with the properties of commonly used facade cladding materials. It was determined that stonepaste ceramics had a very low firing shrinkage value (2.84 %) compared to that of other ceramic cladding materials, a higher water absorption value (11.79 %) than that of porcelain tiles and floor tiles, and close to wall tiles, and a flexural strength value (33.64MPa) higher than wall tiles and close to porcelain tiles despite the high-water absorption value. Ten cycles of thermal shock resistance showed that the body and glaze layer of the stonepaste ceramic material are well bonded to each other, and there is no significant thermal expansion mismatch between them. One hundred cycles of freeze-thaw conditions indicated that the stonepaste ceramic had good adhesion and thermal expansion compatibility between the glaze and the body but only chipping damage under the action of tensile forces caused by the freezing of water entering the pores of the body. In terms of behaviour against various chemicals, stonepaste ceramics were found to be highly resistant to high and low concentrations of household chemicals, swimming pool salts, and alkalis but less resistant to low concentrations of HCl and citric acid and high concentrations of HCl and lactic acid compared to other chemicals. The results show that stonepaste ceramics, despite their high-water absorption potential, have properties close to those of traditional ceramic tiles and, like these materials, can serve for significant periods in various environmental conditions when used as facade cladding. Consequently, it has been revealed that stonepaste ceramics can be used as a facade cladding material in sustainable, long-lasting, contemporary architectural facades thanks to their technical and protective properties.

Japan intended to utilise the Tokyo 2020 games as a means to regain the confidence and rectify the damage to the tourism industry caused by the earthquake, tsunami, and Fukushima nuclear reactor incident. Nevertheless, in response to the pandemic crisis, novel strategies and initiatives were devised with the intention of organising the games with restricted participation, thereby mitigating the achievement of the intended tourism objectives. The projects utilised in the games received complete endorsement from the IOC and were included in the roster of recommendations for future game implementations. Our research in this context focuses on analysing the newly developed methodical tourism heritages for the games. We used the document analysis technique, which is a qualitative research method. Our research focused on evaluating projects related to agora houses, digitalization, artistic works, and the exhibition of national identity. It is significant as it allows for the examination of Olympic history's pioneering achievements.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of vitamin D and melatonin on the ocular tissues in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, a total of 45 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups as follows: 1) non-diabetic rats (control group); 2) untreated STZ-induced diabetic rats; 3) STZ-induced diabetic rats treated with vitamin D; 4) STZ-induced diabetic rats treated with melatonin; 5) STZ-induced diabetic rats treated with the combination of vitamin D and melatonin. After six weeks of treatment, all rats were sacrificed for post-mortem analyses. Retinal and corneal samples were obtained and analyzed for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) expression. Retinal and corneal thicknesses in addition to morphological changes were assessed via hematoxylin and eosin staining. RESULTS: Untreated diabetic rats revealed retinal disorganization, atrophy, increased vascularization along with more GFAP staining. However, all the treated groups exhibited more regular retinal layers and minimal GFAP staining. Additionally, treatment groups showed more uniform corneal layers with minimal GFAP staining. CONCLUSIONS: Melatonin and vitamin D could be used as an additional complementary treatment in diabetes. Developing treatment protocols involving supplementation, as well as informing patients about the potential benefits of vitamin D and melatonin could be impactful in the treatment process of diabetes. Estradiol (E2), a follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), AMH, and inhibin B levels, along with AFC and MOV, are used to determine ovarian reserve in pre-menopausal women. Studies have shown that AMH levels are more sensitive than those of E2, FSH, and inhibin B and that AFC and MOV can be used to evaluate ovarian reserve. AMH, AFC, and MOV measurements were performed before and after adjuvant SC in 3-month periods for one year. Patients were classified as experiencing chemotherapy-induced amenorrhea (CIA) if they did not have menstrual cycles for a period of six months or longer following the conclusion of their chemotherapy treatment. We aimed to evaluate the factors affecting chemotherapy-induced amenorrhea in breast cancer patients treated with adjuvant chemotherapy and the performance of baseline measurements of AMH, AFC, and MOV to predict chemotherapy-induced amenorrhea. The effects of different chemotherapy regimens on the AMH level, AFC, and MOV in CIA patients were investigated. Seventy-one patients were eligible for this study, and the median age was 38 years (range: 23–45). The median follow-up was 37 months (range: 20–51), and CIA developed in 62% of the patients. The AMH level and AFC were significantly decreased one year after SC (p < 0.0001), whereas MOV was not (p = 0.507). AMH levels before chemotherapy (median: 1.520 vs. 0.755, p = 0.001) and at the end of the first year (median: 0.073 vs. 0.010, p = 0.030) and pre-treatment AFC (median: 12 vs. 4.50, p = 0.026) were lower in patients with CIA compared to those without CIA. The AMH levels before SC were the most valuable and earliest factor for predicting CIA development. In addition, there was no difference between the chemotherapy regimens (including or not including taxane) in terms of CIA development.

Objective:This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between PREDICT tool overall survival (OS) scores and high-risk patients according to TAILORx risk categorization in elderly hormone reseptor (HR) positive human epidermal growth factor negative early breast-cancer patients.Materials and Methods:We conducted a retrospective study, extracting data from medical records of 64 patients diagnosed with breast cancer. A retrospective analysis was performed on all patients who had Oncotype Dx Recurrence Scores across five medical centers between 2017 and 2022. PREDICT scores were defined as calculated 10-year OS rates via PREDICT tool.Results:The median age of the patients was 67, with a range between 65–75 years. Low-risk patients had a slightly higher two PREDICT scores compared to high-risk patients (78% vs. 73%), (81% vs. 77%), which were statistically significant. The progesterone receptor (PR) level was significantly lower in the high-risk group (3.5% vs. 80%). A unit decrease in the PREDICT scores was associated with a 11% increase in the odds of being in the high-risk group. However, these effects weren’t statistically significant in the multivariate analysis. A unit decrease in the PR level was significantly associated with increased odds (by 5% in the multivariate analysis) of being in the high-risk group.Conclusion:Our study underscores the importance of using a combination of tools, including the PREDICT tool, PR levels, and TAILORx risk categorization, for a comprehensive risk assessment in these patients, especially in the older population. Accurate risk assessment is crucial for tailoring the treatment and optimizing outcomes in this vulnerable population. Future studies are warranted to further validate these findings in larger cohorts and to explore additional biomarkers and genomic signatures that may aid in the risk assessment and management of breast cancer in older patients.

Cancer’s profound impact on emotional well-being necessitates an exploration into the underlying psychological mechanisms influencing depression and anxiety in patients. In this study, we explored the potential role of self-compassion, alexithymia, and cognitive emotion regulation mechanisms in influencing depressive and anxiety symptoms among cancer patients. A total of 151 stage 4 cancer patients participated. Instruments applied included the Beck Depression Scale (BDS), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), Cognitive Emotion Regulation Scale (CERQ), Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and Brief Psychological Resilience Scale (BRS). The multivariate analysis utilizing the independent variables—SCS, adaptive and maladaptive CERQ, TAS subscales, BRS, and VAS scores—accounted for 39% of the variance seen in BDI (F (8142) = 11.539, p < 0.001). Notably, SCS, adaptive CERQ, and BRS had a negative predictive impact on BDI. Our findings substantiate a statistically significant partial mediatory role of resilience and cognitive emotion regulation in the association between self-compassion and depression. This research accentuates the central role self-compassion, emotional resilience, and cognitive regulation play in the emotional well-being of individuals diagnosed with cancer. Targeted therapeutic interventions focusing on these dimensions may enhance the psychological health of patients, ultimately improving overall treatment outcomes in the oncological setting.

BackgroundAromatase inhibitors have positive impacts on the disease-free life of patients with breast cancer. However, their side effects, especially arthralgia, may be experienced by many patients. This study sought to assess the efficacy of Progressive Relaxation Exercises on the prevalent side effects of Aromatase Inhibitors in patients with breast cancer.Materials and methodsThis clinical trial was conducted with single-blind randomization at a physiotherapy department in a local hospital. Patients who received Aromatase Inhibitor were assigned at random to either the study or control group. The study group (n = 22) performed a Progressive Relaxation Exercises program four days a week for six weeks, while the control group (n = 22) received advice on relaxation for daily life. Data was collected before the intervention and after six weeks. The study's primary endpoint was the Brief Pain Inventory, which was used to measure pain severity. Secondary endpoints included assessments of quality of life and emotional status, which were measured using the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy and Hospital Anxiety and Depression scales, respectively.ResultsThe study group exhibited a significant reduction in Pain Severity (p = 0.001) and Pain Interference (p = 0.012) sub-scores. Reduction in Pain Severity (p0.05).ConclusionThe study demonstrated that Progressive Relaxation Exercises caused a significant reduction in pain scores among Breast Cancer patients receiving Aromatase Inhibitors. While a decrease in pain during the 6-week period is valuable data, it is necessary to monitor the long-term effects of relaxation techniques.

Diffusion research has clearly demonstrated that international processes are responsible for widespread adoption of neoliberal policies but retained a limited grasp of internal factors that enhance or undermine the ability of countries to adopt diffusing models. This shortcoming gave us an opportunity to examine the effects of political institutions on policy adoption to expand the range of potentially important domestic factors for policy differences. In this regard, we emphasized the roles that the states could play in providing policy directions for countries depending on their ability or willingness to ensure judicial independence, demonstrate capacity, and promote democracy. Specifically, stock markets provided an appropriate setting for this study as the spread of this model in the past several decades has been rapid but not as ubiquitous. Accordingly, we advanced a number of hypotheses concerning the impacts of judicial independence, state capacity, and democracy on stock exchange adoption. The results from survival models using data for as many as 92 countries between 1980 and 2017 generally supported our hypotheses. The study found that not only do independent effects of all three political institutions help explain the establishment of a country’s first stock exchange but also the interrelationship between judicial independence and state capacity through a mediational process. Our main contribution is to establish that judicial independence, state capacity, and democracy are central to better understanding the roles that the states play in determining whether the reforms advocated by the international community are introduced at the national level.

Abstract This study presents archaeometric analyses of glazed tiles produced with the cut-mosaic technique to reveal information about the Anatolian Seljuk period’s architecture and ceramic technology. The Persian Seljuk artists also used the same technique. For this purpose, physical, chemical, thermal, mineralogical, microstructural, and molecular analyses were carried out on the tiles from the Seljuk period unearthed in the Kılıçarslan Square excavation in Konya, the capital of the Anatolian Seljuk State from the twelfth-century to the beginning of the fourteenth-century. SEM, XRD, and Heat Microscopy analyses showed that the Seljuk period tiles were not fired at high temperatures like today’s tiles and were probably fired at temperatures below 1100 °C. WD-XRF analyses revealed that the glazes are classified into two categories, one being alkali varying the content of Na2O + K2O between 13 and 16 wt% (PbO between 0.5 and 2 wt%) and the other being lead-alkali type in which PbO content varies between 13 and 15 wt% and alkali content 10–14 wt%. The cobalt content in the blue color is around 0.2 wt%, and copper content in the turquoise-colored samples varies between 2.9 and 4.4 wt% depending on the lightness and darkness of the color (higher amount for tile 1 and tile 3, which are darker than the others). The brown color is obtained by the presence of MnO (3.3 wt%). Raman analysis showed that the difference in sintering temperature caused the color tone difference in Seljuk period tiles, and glazes were formed in the range of 800–1000 °C depending on the Ip values.

BackgroundThe Oncotype Dx recurrence score (ODx-RS) guides the adjuvant chemotherapy decision-making process for patients with early-stage hormone receptor-positive, HER-2 receptor-negative breast cancer. This study aimed to evaluate survival and its correlation with ODx-RS in pT1-2, N0-N1mic patients treated with adjuvant therapy based on tumor board decisions.Patients and methodsEstrogen-positive HER-2 negative early-stage breast cancer patients (pT1-2 N0, N1mic) with known ODx-RS, operated on between 2010 and 2014, were included in this study. The primary aim was to evaluate 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rates according to ODX-RS.ResultsA total of 203 eligible patients were included in the study, with a median age of 48 (range 26-75) and median follow-up of 84 (range 23-138) months. ROC curve analysis for all patients revealed a recurrence cut-off age of 45 years, prompting evaluation by grouping patients as ≤45 years vs. >45 years. No significant difference in five-year DFS rates was observed between the endocrine-only (ET) and chemo-endocrine (CE) groups. However, among the ET group, DFS was higher in patients over 45 years compared to those aged ≤45 years. When stratifying by ODx-RS as 0-17 and ≥18, DFS was significantly higher in the former group within the ET group. However, such differences were not seen in the CE group. In the ET group, an ODx-RS ≥18 and menopausal status were identified as independent factors affecting survival, with only an ODx-RS ≥18 impacting DFS in patients aged ≤45 years. The ROC curve analysis for this subgroup found the ODx-RS cut-off to be 18.ConclusionThis first multicenter Oncotype Dx survival analysis in Turkey demonstrates the importance of Oncotype Dx recurrence score and age in determining treatment strategies for early-stage breast cancer patients. As a different aproach to the literature, our findings suggest that the addition of chemotherapy to endocrine therapy in young patients (≤45 years) with Oncotype Dx recurrence scores of ≥18 improves DFS.

This study aimed to elucidate the role of psychological factors in caregiver burden among caregivers of stage 4 cancer patients. Data were collected from 328 caregivers of cancer patients, employing the Zarit Care Burden Scale, Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale (DASS-42), Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale (DAS-A), Ruminative Thought Style Questionnaire (RTSQ), and Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Inventory (Brief COPE). Males, spouses, and caregivers of patients with a PEG or tracheostomy, or those diagnosed with pancreatic biliary cancer were found to have a significantly higher risk of caregiver burden. Age, sex, caregiver-patient relationship, caregiving duration, patient’s catheter status, cancer types, depression and stress severity, rumination, dysfunctional attitudes, and dysfunctional coping strategies explained 69.7% of the variance in Zarit Care Burden Scale scores (F(14,313) = 51.457, p < 0.001), illustrating their significant predictive relationship with caregiver burden. Moderation analysis revealed significant interactions of emotional coping with depression (b = −0.0524, p = 0.0076) and dysfunctional coping with stress on caregiver burden (b = 0.014, p = 0.006). Furthermore, rumination mediated the relationships between caregiver burden, stress, and depression (p < 0.01). Overall, the results highlight the intricate relationships among caregiver burden, mental health, and coping strategies, suggesting tailored interventions to support caregiver health and quality of care.

The benefit of breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is unclear. Our study compared breast cancer patients with and without preoperative breast MRI and their long-term oncologic outcomes are reported. A total of 1378 BCS cases with early breast cancer between 1996 and 2017 were reviewed. Patients with carcinoma in situ or neoadjuvant treatment or having breast MRI after tumor excision were excluded. Of 1378 patients, 270 (19.5%) had preoperative MRI. There were no significant differences regarding T and N stage and molecular subtypes between the groups. Surgical margins were significantly wider in the breast MRI group. Five-year overall survival (OS) was 96.9% in the MRI group and 94.3% in the control group, and this difference was not significant (p=0.11). Five-year local-regional recurrence-free survival (LRFS) was not significantly different either (98.8% and 96.5%, respectively, p=0.41). When analyses were repeated only for patients with hormone receptor-negative or triple-negative breast cancer, there was still no significant difference in OS, LRFS, or disease-free survival. In conclusion, MRI does not seem necessary in all patients undergoing BCS. New prospective randomized controlled trials are needed to determine appropriate use of preoperative MRI and its effects on oncologic outcomes in early breast cancer patients.

In this paper, we explore the psychological outcomes of within-country residential mobility in Turkey. While characterized as a collectivist and tight culture, Turkey has also historically experienced extensive migration. In this study, we examine the implications of residential mobility for collectivist self-construal and violation of traditional norms at the individual level. We also test whether these relationships are contingent upon the intensity of contact with family networks. We use nationally representative data from 42,043 respondents from 19,428 households. Empirical analyses reveal that residential mobility is negatively associated with the primacy of a collective self as reflected in lower preference for homogamy and less collectivist conceptualizations of parenthood. We also find that residential mobility is positively related to tolerance of violating patriarchal norms regarding gender roles and traditional norms regarding marriage. Finally, we find that the intensity of contact with family members attenuates the effects of residential mobility on our dependent variables. We discuss the implications of our findings for research regarding residential mobility in Turkey.

Objectives: Multiple sclerosis (MS)-related tremor remains a disabling problem that often responds poorly to medical treatments. This study aims to evaluate the effect of botulinum toxin type A on MS-related upper limb tremor., Methods: This retrospective observational cohort study included 8 patients who received intramuscular injections of onabotulinum toxin type A for medically refractory MS-related tremor. Hospital records before and 4-6 weeks after treatment, including the Fahn-Tolosa-Marin Tremor rating scale (FTM-TRS), electrophysiological tremor analysis, neurological examination findings, and videos, were reviewed retrospectively., Results: There was significant improvement after botulinum toxin injection in the FTM TRS part A score for tremor (P = 0.011), FTM TRS part B score for hand function (P = 0.011), FTM Part score for activities of daily living (P = 0.012), and FTM TRS total score for overall evaluation (P = 0.012). Electrophysiological tremor analysis revealed maximal tremor amplitudes between 700-2000 μV (before treatment) and between 300-1000 μV (after treatment). The mean tremor amplitudes before and after treatment were 1350 μV and 725 μV, respectively. No adverse reactions were observed after botulinum toxin treatment., Conclusions: BoNT may improve upper limb tremor and functionality in MS-related tremor. The treatment involved administering BoNT under EMG guidance, with careful muscle selection based on clinical assessment and EMG findings. This approach aimed to optimize treatment efficacy while minimizing potential adverse effects. Objective: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is known as a seronegative form of spondylarthropathy. The interleukin-36 cytokine family may have a major role in disease pathogenesis and particularly the related cutaneous manifestations. In light of our recent observations on (transient) autoantibody phenotypes neutralizing endogenous anti-inflammatory receptor antagonists (progranulin, IL-1Ra) in different inflammatory conditions, we set out to investigate the potential role of such antibodies targeting IL-36 cytokine family members in PsA and psoriasis without arthritic manifestations (Pso)., Methods: In the present study we screened for hypothetic autoantibodies against the anti-inflammatory mediators IL-36 receptor antagonist (IL-36Ra) and anti-inflammatory IL-38 in PsA, Pso and inflammatory and healthy controls. Serum samples of patients with PsA (n = 254), Pso (n = 100), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE, n = 50), rheumatoid arthritis (RA, n = 100), ulcerative colitis (UC, n = 50), Crohn´s disease (CD, n = 50), and healthy controls (n = 237) were screened for autoantibodies against IL-36Ra and IL-38 as well as IL-36Ra levels by ELISA. Biochemical analysis for immune complexes and atypic protein isoforms as well as IL-36 signaling reporter assays were performed., Results: Anti-IL-36Ra antibodies were detected in five out of 100 (5.0 %) patients with Pso, in 12 of 254 (4.72 %) patients with PsA and in one of 50 (2 %) patients with CD, but in none of the other investigated inflammatory or healthy controls. The IL-36Ra autoantibodies belonged to the IgG1 subclass and their titers ranged between 1:200 to 1:1600. Iontronic pressure sensors hold significant potential to emerge as vital components in the field of flexible and wearable electronics, addressing a variety of applications spanning wearable technology, health monitoring systems, and human-machine interactions. This study introduces a novel iontronic pressure sensor structure based on a seamlessly deposited Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene layer onto highly porous melamine foam as parallel plate electrodes and an ionically conductive electrolyte of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide/thermoplastic polyurethane coupled with carbon cloth as current collecting layers for improved sensitivity and high mechanical stability of more than 7000 cycles. MXene-deposited melamine foam-based iontronic pressure sensors (MIPS) showed a high sensitivity of 5.067 kPa -1 in the range of 45-60 kPa and a fast response/recovery time of 28/18 ms, respectively. The high sensitivity, high mechanical stability, and fast response/recovery time of the designed sensor make them highly promising candidates for real-time body motion monitoring. Moreover, sensors are employed as a smart numpad for integration into advanced ATM security systems utilizing machine learning algorithms. Objectives: Cesarean section is one of the most common operations worldwide since decades. However, the optimum surgical cesarean section technique is still being discussed. Closure or non-closure of the rectus muscles is also unclear among obstetricians. We aimed to evaluate the effect of rectus muscle re-approximation (RMR) in cesarean section on postoperative pain among singleton primi gravida elective cesarean sections at term., Material and Methods: The current study was planned as a prospective, blinded, randomized controlled trial. A total of 279 elective primi gravida singleton cesarean sections; 142 undergoing RMR and 137 not-undergoing RMR were included in the study. All participants were managed with our clinic's postoperative protocol and obstetric outcomes were also recorded. The patients' pain was assessed face to face 24 hours and 48 hours after operation by using visual analog scale (VAS) score., Results: The elective singleton primi gravida cesarean sections with and without RMR exhibited no significant difference with respect to maternal age, Body Mass Index, delivery week and other obstetric outcomes. The VAS scores at 24th and 48th hours (67 ± 24 versus 69 ± 25, p: 0.635; 47 ± 25 versus 52 ± 26, p: 0,126, respectively) were similar between the RMR and non-RMR group., Conclusions: RMR has not any negative effect on postoperative pain, operation time, analgesic use and hospital stay in singleton primi gravida elective CS at term. Additionally, RMR did not lead to any adverse postoperative risks such as increased blood loss and sub-rectus hematoma.

Background: Locking plates are commonly used for the fixation of comminuted, periprosthetic and osteoporotic bone fractures. These plates are secured to the bone with screws, creating a stable connection with fixed angle between the plate and the screws. In this biomechanical in vitro study, our aim is to evaluate and compare the novel locking plate-locking spongious screw model with FDA approved classical locking plate., Methods: Sawbone PCF-15 osteoporotic bone model was utilized to simulate osteoporotic bone conditions. Two screws were used to attach both the classical locking plate and the novel locking plate-locking spongious screw model to these bone models. The attachment strength of the screws to the bone blocks was measured by pull-out tests., Results: Novel locking plate-locking spongious screw model exhibited an 84.38% stronger attachment to the osteoporotic bone model compared to the current locking plate model., Conclusions: In conclusion, one of the important problems in the locking plates which is the high Pull-out risk of the locking spongious screws can been resolved with our proposed new model and has a chance of having a better purchase especially in osteoporotic bones., (© 2024. The aim of this research was to investigate the larvicidal and repellent effects of essential oils (EOs) obtained from two Lamiaceae plant species, Origanum minutiflorum O. Schwarz & P.H. Davis and Dorystoechas hastata Boiss. & Heldr. ex Bentham, both endemic to Turkey, on Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. Latreille (Acari: Ixodidae). The study also introduces a new test method that can be used to assess the repellent effects against ticks. Both plant EOs exhibited the highest larvicidal activity against brown dog tick larvae after 24 h and LC 50 and LC 90 values were determined as 0.101% and 0.125% for O. minutiflorum essential oil and 0.937% and 2.1% for D. hastata essential oil, respectively. In this study, we have described a detailed protocol for a novel larval repellent activity test (LRAT) for essential oils and extracts, using simple equipment. The advantages and limitations of LRAT, when compared to other tests commonly used to determine repellent effect against ticks, are also included in this study. The LRAT was developed with modifications of the larval immersion test (LIT) and proves to be a highly efficient and easily observable method. It can be used to test any active substance that may be toxic to humans and animals. According to the LRAT, at the end of 3 h, O. minutiflorum essential oil showed a high repellent effect, varying between 84.14% and 100% at 1% concentration. This result was not statistically different from the DEET, the positive control. Objectives: To evaluate the maternal serum ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) concentration as an oxidative stress biomarker in pregnancies complicated by preterm pre-labor rupture of membranes (PPROM) without maternal clinical infection and compare these results with healthy pregnancies., Material and Methods: The present cohort study included 40 pregnancies complicated by PPROM and 49 similar gestational age healthy pregnancies in the third trimester of gestation. Maternal venous blood specimens were obtained at the day of first diagnosis. Maternal serum IMA level was assayed with an Albumin Cobalt Binding test. The subjects were followed up until delivery and perinatal outcomes were recorded., Results: The maternal serum IMA concentrations were significantly higher in the study group (0.56 ± 0.05 absorbance units) as compared to controls (0.54 ± 0.03 absorbance units) (p = 0.020). The maternal serum IMA concentrations were not significantly correlated with the initial maternal white blood cell count (r: 0.118, p = 0.269) and C-reactive protein levels (r: 0.066, p = 0.541). The maternal serum IMA concentrations were negatively correlated with gestational age at delivery (r: -0.248, p = 0.019), birthweight (r: -0.247, p = 0.020) and Apgar scores (r: -0.200, p = 0.049; r: -0.245, p = 0.020). The threshold value of maternal serum IMA concentration above 0.55 absorbance units indicated the pregnancy complicated by PPROM by 57.5% sensitivity and 57.1% specificity (Area under curve 0.613, confidence interval 0.50-0.73)., Conclusions: The current study supported for the first time that there is an association between increased maternal serum IMA levels and the development of PPROM in the third trimester of gestation without maternal clinical infection. Elevated maternal serum IMA levels may alert the obstetrician about poor ongoing perinatal outcomes in the early phase of PPROM before increased maternal C-reactive protein and white blood cell count.

Nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL) is a Hodgkin lymphoma expressing functional B-cell receptors (BCR). Recently, we described a dual stimulation model of IgD+ lymphocyte-predominant cells by Moraxella catarrhalis antigen RpoC and its superantigen MID/hag, associated with extralong CDR3 and HLA-DRB1*04 or HLADRB1* 07 haplotype. The aim of the present study was to extend the antigen screening to further bacteria and viruses. The fragment antibody-binding (Fab) regions of seven new and 15 previously reported cases were analyzed. The reactivity of non-Moraxella spp.-reactive Fab regions against lysates of Rothia mucilaginosa was observed in 5/22 (22.7%) cases. Galactofuranosyl transferase (Gltf) and 2,3-butanediol dehydrogenase (Bdh) of R. mucilaginosa were identified by comparative silver- and immuno-staining in two-dimensional gels, with subsequent mass spectrometry and validation by western blots and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Both R. mucilaginosa Gltf and Bdh induced BCR pathway activation and proliferation in vitro. Apoptosis was induced by recombinant Gltf/ETA'-immunotoxin conjugates in DEV cells expressing recombinant R. mucilaginosa-reactive BCR. Reactivity against M. catarrhalis RpoC was confirmed in 3/7 newly expressed BCR (total 10/22 reactive to Moraxella spp.), resulting in 15/22 (68.2%) cases with BCR reactivity against defined bacterial antigens. These findings strengthen the hypothesis of bacterial trigger contributing to subsets of NLPHL.

This study investigated the potential acaricidal and repellent effects of tar obtained from the Lebanon cedar ( Cedrus libani A. Rich.) against the brown dog tick species Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato Latreille (Acari: Ixodidae). The goal was to find an alternative, safe, and effective way to eliminate ticks. Tar is traditionally extracted from cedar trees in the Antalya region of Türkiye. The composition of the tar is primarily characterized by a diverse mixture of terpenes, with β-himachalene (29.16%), α-atlantone (28.7%), ar-turmerone (8.82%), longifolene-(V4) (6.66%), α-himachalene (5.28%), and β-turmerone (5.12%) emerging as the predominant constituents. The toxic effects of tar on tick larvae were studied through larval immersion tests (LIT), and its repellent activity was evaluated using a new larval repellent activity test (LRAT). The results revealed significant acaricidal effects, with mortality rates of 77.7% and 82.2% for the Konyaalti and Kepez strains of the brown dog tick, respectively, in response to a 1% concentration of tar. LC 50 and LC 90 values were determined as 0.47% and 1.52% for the Kepez strain and 0.58% and 1.63% for the Konyaalti strain, respectively. When comparing the repellent effect of tar to the widely used synthetic repellent DEET, repellency rates of up to 100% were observed. As a result, this study establishes, for the first time, the larvicidal and repellent effects of C. libani tar on ticks.

Mosquitoes are one of the most dangerous vectors of human diseases such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, and Zika virus. Controlling these vectors is a challenging responsibility for public health authorities worldwide. In recent years, the use of products derived from living organisms has emerged as a promising approach for mosquito control. Among these living organisms, algae are of great interest due to their larvicidal properties. Some algal species provide nutritious food for larvae, while others produce allelochemicals that are toxic to mosquito larvae. In this article, we reviewed the existing literature on the larvicidal potential of extracts of micro- and macroalgae, transgenic microalgae, and nanoparticles of algae on mosquitoes and their underlying mechanisms. The results of many publications show that the toxic effects of micro- and macroalgae on mosquitoes vary according to the type of extraction, solvents, mosquito species, exposure time, larval stage, and algal components. A few studies suggest that the components of algae that have toxic effects on mosquitoes show through synergistic interaction between components, inhibition of feeding, damage to gut membrane cells, and inhibition of digestive and detoxification enzymes. To evaluate the relationship of ultrasonographic evaluation parameters with pain, muscle strength and disease severity in lateral epicondylitis (LE). 64 people were included in present retrospective, cross-sectional study. Activity and rest pain was questioned with Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Also, Patient Rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation (PRTEE) and the maximum grip strength were evaluated. Hypoechoic region, neovascularity, cortical irregularity, enthesopathy and peritendinous fluid or bursitis were evaluated by ultrasonography. 48 of the patients were female and 16 were male. Mean age was 48.53 ± 6.12, body mass index was 27.70 ± 4.75. 55 (85.9%) hypoechoic region, 31 (48.4%) neovascularity, 21 (32.8%) cortical irregularity, 19 (29,7%) enthesopathy, and 18 (28.1%) peritendinous fluid or bursitis were detected by ultrasonography. When the ultrasonographic findings and clinical findings of the patients were compared, no significant difference was found between the hypoechoic region, cortical irregularity, enthesopathy and clinical findings (P > .05), while the extension grip strength was found to be significantly lower in patients with neovascularity (P = .045). In addition, patients with peritendinous fluid or bursitis, were found to be significantly lower in both flexion (P = .033) and extension (P = .023) grip strength, while PRTEE function (P = .021) subgroup and total (P = .038) scores were significantly higher. Hypoechoic region, cortical irregularities and enthesopathy were not evaluated to be associated with disease severity, pain and muscle strength. Neovascularity was found to be associated only with extension grip strength. Background: The shoulder joint is the joint with the most dislocations in all joints. The arthroscopic surgery method is considered the gold standard because it creates less soft tissue damage, shorter hospitalization and surgery time, and less restriction of movement after surgery in shoulder instability. Anterior single portal technique has become popular recently. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the results of the anterior single portal repair technique using "birdbeak". We try to evaluate if this technique is a reliable technique and has the same or more advantages of two portal arthroscopic surgery and make the surgery easier for surgeons., Methods: In the total of 40 patients who underwent arthroscopic surgery for traumatic recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation between January 2017 and February 2020, this study included 19 patients with the surgical technique of arthroscopic isolated anterior labrum tear repair using a birdbeak from the anterior single working portal. Clinical results were evaluated with the Simple Shoulder Test (SST), Rowe Score for Instability (RWS) and Oxford Shoulder Instability Score (OSIS) tests before and after surgery. The relationship between the time to surgery after the first dislocation and clinical outcomes was also examined in the study. Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests were used to control the assumption of normality. In addition, Pearson correlation and Spearman correlation analyzes were used to test the relationship between the variables., Results: The mean follow-up period of the 19 patients included in this study was 33.1 months. The mean time to surgery after the first dislocation was 18.4 months. The mean preoperative number of dislocations was 5.3. The mean number of anchors used in the repair was 2.1. No recurrent dislocations were observed after surgery. A significant difference was observed between preoperative and postoperative SST, RWS and OSIS scores (respectively, p = 0.000 < 0.001, p = 0.000 < 0.001, p = 0.000 < 0.001). There was no statistically significant relationship between the time elapsed after the first dislocation and the postoperative SST, RWS, OSIS scores (respectively, p = 0.43 > 0.05, p = 0.39 > 0.05, p = 0.31 > 0.05)., Conclusion: It has been observed that the repair technique applied using the "birdbeak" from the anterior single working portal is a successful treatment, and further studies are required due to the limited literature., (© 2023. Air pollution is a problem that is increasing day by day and poses a threat on a global scale. Particulate matter (PM) is one of the air pollutants that is the biggest concern regarding air quality. In order to control PM pollution, highly effective air filters are required. This is especially necessary for PM with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers (PM 2.5 ), which poses a health risk to humans. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time the use of a two-dimensional titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 ) MXene nanosheets-decorated nylon mesh (MDNM) as a low cost and highly efficient PM 2.5 filter. This study develops a proof-of-concept method to capture PM 2.5 . Thanks to their high specific surface area and active surface-terminating groups, conductive MXene nanosheets have made nylon mesh filters promising candidates for air filtration. The developed filters used electrostatic force to capture PM 2.5 and showed high removal efficiency (90.05%) when an ionizer was used and under an applied voltage of 10 V, while a commercial high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter had a removal efficiency of 91.03% measured under identical conditions. Despite recent advances in the therapy of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified (DLBCL), around 30% of patients develop refractory disease or relapse after first-line treatment. Recently, Ars2 was reported as the auto-antigenic target of the B-cell receptor (BCR) in approximately 25% of activated B-cell DLBCL cases. Ars2 could be used to specifically target B cells expressing Ars2-reactive BCRs. However, the optimal therapeutic format to integrate Ars2 into has yet to be determined. To mimic therapeutic antibody formats, Ars2-containing bispecific and IgG1-like constructs (BCR antigens for reverse [BAR]-bodies) were developed. Two bispecific BAR-bodies connecting single-chain antibodies against CD16 or CD3 to the BCR-binding epitope of Ars2 were constructed. Both constructs showed strong binding to U2932 cells and induced effector cell-dependent and selective cytotoxicity against U2932 cells of up to 44% at concentrations of 20 μg/ml. Additionally, IgG1-format Ars2 BAR-bodies were constructed by replacing the variable heavy- and light-chain regions of a full-length antibody with the Ars2 epitope. IgG1-format Ars2 BAR-bodies also bound selectively to U2932 and OCI-Ly3 cells and induced selective cytotoxicity of up to 60% at 10 μg/ml. Long COVID is a collection of symptoms as a late sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection. It often includes mental symptoms such as cognitive symptoms, persisting loss of smell and taste, in addition to exertional dyspnea. A role of various autoantibodies (autoAbs) has been postulated in long-COVID and is being further investigated. With the goal of identifying potentially unknown autoAbs, we screened plasma of patients with long COVID on in-house post-translationally modified protein macroarrays including citrullinated, SUMOylated and acetylated membranes. SUMO1ylated isoform DEAD/H (Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp/His) box helicase 35 (SUMO1-DHX35) was identified as only candidate antigen. In adult patients with long COVID, IgG autoAbs against SUMO1-DHX35 of IgG class were found in seven of 71 (9.8%) plasma samples, of IgM and IgG class in one of 69 (1.4%) samples, not in 200 healthy adult controls, not in 442 healthy children, and 146 children after SARS-CoV-2 infection. All autoAb-positive seven patients were female. AutoAb titers ranged between 200 to up to 400 By point mutagenesis and expression of FLAG-tagged mutants of DHX35 in HEK293 cells, and subsequent SUMOylation of purified constructs, lysine 53 was identified as a unique, never yet identified, SUMOylation site. The autoAbs had no reactivity against the non-SUMO1ylated mutant (K53R) of DHX35. To summarize, autoAbs against SUMO1-DHX35 were identified in adult female patients with long-COVID. Further studies are needed to verify the frequency of occurrence. The function of DHX35 has not yet been determined and there is no available information in relation to disease implication. Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with most patients diagnosed at an advanced age. The treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has been revolutionized with the introduction of molecular guided therapy. Despites the challenges when considering treatment of older adults, they are still systematically underrepresented in registrational trials. This review aims to summarize the existing evidence on treatment of older patients with lung cancer with a targetable driver mutation or alteration (EGFR, ALK, ROS, BRAF V600E , MET, RET, KRAS G12C and NTRK), and consider the evidence from a geriatric oncology perspective. Early generation EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). TKIs are fairly well-studied in older adults and have been shown to be safe and efficient. However, older adult-specific data regarding the standard-of-care first-line agent osimertinib are lacking. Erlotinib, dacomitinib, and afatinib may be more toxic than other EGFR-TKIs. Next generation ALK-TKIs are preferred over crizotinib due to increased efficacy, as demonstrated in phase III trials. Alectinib seems to be safer than crizotinib, while brigatinib is associated with increased toxicity. Lorlatinib overcomes most resistance mutations, but data regarding this agent have only recently emerged. Regarding ROS1-fusion positive NSCLC, crizotinib is an option in older adults, while entrectinib is similarly effective but shows increased neurotoxicity. In BRAF V600E -mutant NSCLC, the combination darbafenib/tramectinib is effective, but no safety data for older adults exist. MET alterations can be targeted with capmatinib and tepotinib, and registrational trials included primarily older patients, due to the association of this alteration with advanced age. For RET-rearranged-NSCLC selpercatinib and pralsetinib are approved, and no differences in safety or efficacy between older and younger patients were shown. KRAS G12C mutations, which are more frequent in older adults, became recently druggable with sotorasib, and advanced age does not seem to affect safety or efficacy. In NTRK-fusion positive tumors, larotrectinib and entrectinib have tumor agnostic approval, however, not enough data on older patients are available. Based on currently available data, molecularly-guided therapy for most alterations is safe and efficacious in older adults with oncogene-driven advanced NSCLC. Background: Patients with cancer and autoimmune diseases are at higher risk of severe COVID-19. They may not develop protective immune responses following vaccination. We investigated patients' cellular and humoral immune response after two COVID-19 vaccine doses., Research Design and Methods: Subjects were stratified into subgroups according to therapy and grade of immunosuppression at time of vaccination., Results: Antibody titers were compared to healthy controls. 32/122 (26%) did not develop detectable antibody titers. Of these, 22 (66.6%) had active therapy. Patients showed significant lower antibody titers compared to controls (median 790 vs. 3923 AU/mL, p = 0.026). Patients with active therapy had significant lower antibody titers compared to those without (median 302 vs. 3952 U/L P < 0.001). B-cell count was lower in the group without antibody titers (median 29.97 vs. 152.8; p = 0.002). 100% of patients under anti-CD20 therapy had no detectable antibody titer, followed by anti-TNF (66%), BTK inhibitors (50%), ruxolitinib (35.5%), TKI (14.2%), and lenalidomide (12.5%). Anti-CD20 therapy, ruxolitinib, BTK inhibitors, and anti-CD38 therapy presented significant lower antibody titers compared to controls., Conclusions: Patients undergoing therapy for cancer or autoimmune diseases are at higher risk of insufficient humoral immune response following COVID-19 vaccination. Furthermore, alterations in the B-cell compartment correlate with lower antibody titers.

Alphitobius diaperinus Panzer (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) is an insect pest in poultry production systems. This insect has developed resistance to many chemical insecticides. As an alternative to chemicals, entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are one of the most commonly used agents against several pest arthropods. The pathogenicity of the EPN Steinernema carpocapsae Weiser on four field strains of lesser mealworm, A. diaperinus, from Turkey was studied. In the experiments, larvae of A. diaperinus were found to be more sensitive than adults to S. carpocapsae infection. In terms of LC50 values in both larval and adult insects, Balikesir strain was found to be the most susceptible, Manisa strain the most resistant. The calculated LC50 values for adults were 85.9, 205.6, 135.4, and 418.8 IJs/ml, and for larvae 31.2, 39.8, 34.8, and 70.9 IJs/ml for the Balikesir, Canakkale, İzmir, and Manisa strains, respectively. This is the first report about the pathogenicity of EPNs against larvae and adults of lesser mealworm A. diaperinus strains from Turkey. The aim of this study was to investigate maternal systemic thiol/disulphide homeostasis (TDH) for the short-term prediction of preterm birth in women with threatened preterm labour (TPL). This prospective study included 75 pregnant women whose pregnancies were complicated by TPL. Thirty-seven of them delivered within 7 days and 38 of them delivered beyond 7 days. Maternal serum samples were collected at the day of diagnosis and the TDH was measured. The maternal disulphide level was significantly higher in pregnant women who delivered within 7 days (25.0 ± 9.8 μmol/L vs 19.4 ± 9.8 μmol/L, p : .015). The threshold value of 22.1 μmol/L for maternal disulphide level predicted delivery within 7 days with 62.2% sensitivity and 60.5% specificity (area under curve 0.651, confidence interval 0.53-0.78). The likelihood ratios for short cervix (≤25 mm) and maternal disulphide level (≥22 μmol/L) to predict delivery within 7 days was found to be 8.7 and 7.3, respectively. The likelihood ratio of combining two tests to predict delivery within 7 days was found to be 11.4. The maternal TDH, which is an indicator of oxidative stress status in maternal compartment, is disturbed in TPL cases who delivered within 7 days. Elevated maternal disulphide level along with cervical length screening predicts a short latency period in pregnancies with TPL. IMPACT STATEMENT What is already known on this subject? Spontaneous preterm delivery is one of the major complication of pregnancy and the common cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Threatened preterm labour (TPL) is also a frequent complaint in obstetric emergency care units in all around the world. Triaging women with TPL is mandatory for planning further management therapies, since the most of them will eventually deliver at term. Only the measurement of cervical length in symptomatic women has moderate accuracy in predicting preterm delivery. Short cervix is described as an independent predictor of preterm delivery in women with TPL, its predictive accuracy as a single measurement is relatively limited. On this account, several potential markers like foetal fibronectin in the cervicovaginal fluid, salivary oestriol, prolactin in vaginal discharge, maternal serum calponin and interleukin-6 in the amniotic fluid were examined to predict preterm delivery in previous studies. However, none of them represented an excessive predictive accuracy like high sensitivity, PPV or NPV. What do the results of this study add? We report a method which has higher diagnostic and predictive performance to identifying TPL women with high risk of preterm delivery. According to the current literature, there are accumulated data about the correlation between oxidative stress (OS) and preterm delivery regardless of the amniotic membrane status. However, it is still debated whether OS is a trigger or a consequence of preterm delivery. Our study provides evidence for the first time that maternal serum thiol/disulphide homeostasis, which is an indicator of OS in maternal compartment, is disturbed in TPL cases who delivered within 7 days. The high disulphide level in maternal serum, along with cervical length measurement (short cervix) accurately predicts a short latency period in TPL cases. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? This novel test combination (maternal serum disulphide level and cervical length measurement) could be used clinically to triage pregnant women presenting with TPL, avoiding overtreatment, unnecessary hospitalisations and increased medical costs. The future research would be addressed on reducing maternal OS by using new antioxidant treatment strategies to improve perinatal and long-term childhood outcomes.

Background: Ovulation is regulated by extracellular signal-regulated kinase-1 (ERK-1) and ERK-2 signaling mechanisms, and ERK-1/2 kinases modulates the function of most of the LH-regulated genes. Defective ERK kinase signaling that is secondary to a genetic problem contributes to both ovulatory dysfunction and metabolic problems in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We planned to investigate ERK-1 and ERK-2 gene polymorphisms in PCOS for the first time in the Turkish population., Methods: One hundred two PCOS patients and 102 healthy controls were recruited for this patient control study. HOMA-IR, Ferriman-Gallwey score (FGS), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and body mass index (BMI) were assessed. Lipid profile levels, CRP, and total testosterone were determined. ERK-2 rs2276008 (G > C) and ERK-1 rs11865228 (G > A) SNPs were analyzed with a real-time PCR system., Results: ERK-1 and ERK-2 genotypes were found to differ between the PCOS and control groups. In patients with PCOS, ERK-1 GA and ERK-2 GC genotypes were different in terms of BMI, FGS, HOMA-IR, CRP, total testosterone, and total cholesterol levels., Conclusions: ERK-1 and ERK-2 genes are involved in PCOS pathogenesis. Burkitt lymphoma (BL) represents the most aggressive B-cell-lymphoma. Beside the hallmark of IG-MYC -translocation, surface B-cell receptor (BCR) is expressed, and mutations in the BCR pathway are frequent. Coincidental infections in endemic BL, and specific extra-nodal sites suggest antigenic triggers. To explore this hypothesis, BCRs of BL cell lines and cases were screened for reactivities against a panel of bacterial lysates, lysates of Plasmodium falciparum , a custom-made virome array and against self-antigens, including post-translationally modified antigens. An atypically modified, SUMOylated isoform of Bystin, that is, SUMO1-BYSL was identified as the antigen of the BCR of cell line CA46. SUMO1-BYSL was exclusively expressed in CA46 cells with K139 as site of the SUMOylation. Secondly, an atypically acetylated isoform of HSP40 was identified as the antigen of the BCR of cell line BL41. K104 and K179 were the sites of immunogenic acetylation, and the acetylated HSP40 isoform was solely present in BL41 cells. Functionally, addition of SUMO1-BYSL and acetylated HSP40 induced BCR pathway activation in CA46 and BL41 cells, respectively. Accordingly, SUMO1-BYSL-ETA' immunotoxin, produced by a two-step intein-based conjugation, led to the specific killing of CA46 cells. Autoantibodies directed against SUMO1-BYSL were found in 3 of 14 (21.4%), and autoantibodies against acetylated HSP40 in 1/14(7.1%) patients with sporadic Burkitt-lymphoma. No reactivities against antigens of the infectious agent spectrum could be observed.
