Abstract

Nuclear reactors are uniquely powerful, abundant, and flavor-pure sources of antineutrinos that continue to play a vital role in the US neutrino physics program. The US reactor antineutrino physics community is a diverse interest group encompassing many detection technologies and many particle physics topics, including Standard Model and short-baseline oscillations, BSM physics searches, and reactor flux and spectrum modeling. The community's aims offer strong complimentary with numerous aspects of the wider US neutrino program and have direct relevance to most of the topical sub-groups composing the Snowmass 2021 Neutrino Frontier. Reactor neutrino experiments also have a direct societal impact and have become a strong workforce and technology development pipeline for DOE National Laboratories and universities. This white paper, prepared as a submission to the Snowmass 2021 community organizing exercise, will survey the state of the reactor antineutrino physics field and summarize the ways in which current and future reactor antineutrino experiments can play a critical role in advancing the field of particle physics in the next decade., Contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

Extragalactic astronomy., [Context] The Lyα emission is an important tracer of neutral gas in a circum-galactic medium (CGM) around high-z quasi-stellar objects (QSOs). The origin of Lyα emission around QSOs is still under debate, bringing on significant implications for galaxy formation and evolution., [Aims] In this paper, we study Lyα nebulae around two high redshift QSOs, SDSS J141935.58+525710.7 at z = 3.218 (hereafter QSO1) and SDSS J141813.40+525240.4 at z = 3.287 (hereafter QSO2), from the miniJPAS survey within the All-wavelength Extended Groth Strip International Survey (AEGIS) field., [Methods] Using the contiguous narrow-band (NB) images from the miniJPAS survey and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra, we analyzed their morphology, nature, and origin., [Results] We report the serendipitous detection of double-core Lyα morphology around two QSOs, which is rarely seen among other QSOs. The separations of the two Lyα cores are 11.07 ± 2.26 kpcs (1.47 ± 0.3″) and 9.73 ± 1.55 kpcs (1.31 ± 0.21″), with Lyα line luminosities of ∼3.35 × 1044 erg s−1 and ∼6.99 × 1044 erg s −1 for QSO1 and QSO2, respectively. The miniJPAS NB images show evidence of extended Lyα and CIV morphology for both QSOs and extended HeII morphology for QSO1., [Conclusions] These two QSOs may be potential candidates for the new enormous Lyman alpha nebula (ELAN) found from the miniJPAS survey due to their extended morphology in the shallow depth and relatively high Lyα luminosities. We suggest that galactic outflows are the major powering mechanism for the double-core Lyα morphology. Considering the relatively shallow exposures of miniJPAS, the objects found here could merely form the cusp of a promising number of such objects that will be uncovered in the upcoming full Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerated Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) survey and deep integral field units (IFU) observations with 8–10 m telescopes will be essential for constraining the underlying physical mechanism that is responsible for the double-cored morphology., Z.Y.Z. acknowledges support by the National Science Foundation of China (12022303), the China-Chile Joint Research Fund (CCJRF No. 1906), and the CAS Pioneer Hundred Talents Program. Abstract

DyF3/Bi2O3 nanowires with orthorhombic DyF3 and triclinic Bi2O3 phases were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The composite nanowires were characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The obtained composite nanowires have the length of longer than 10 μm and diameter of about 20–100 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms the composition of Dy, F, Bi and O in the composite nanowires. The formation process of the DyF3/Bi2O3 nanowires was analyzed based on the morphological and structural evolution of the products from different growth conditions. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurement demonstrates good electro-catalytic activity of the composite nanowires towards L-cysteine. Two pairs of CV peaks at +0.08 V, −0.43 V and −0.48 V, −0.78 V, respectively are observed at the DyF3/Bi2O3 nanowires modified glassy carbon electrode. DyF3/Bi2O3 nanowires modified glassy carbon electrode detects L-cysteine linearly over a concentration range from 0.001 to 2 mM with a detection limit of 0.25 μM. Moreover, the results show good selectivity, reproducibility and stability of the DyF3/Bi2O3 nanowires as a promising candidate for L-cysteine determination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

7. [Mediating effect of unhealthy lifestyle and depressive symptom on association between life course factors and ageing health].

Abstract

Objective: To explore the mediating effect of unhealthy lifestyle and depressive symptom on the associations between life course factors and aging health. Methods: The study included 6 217 participants (aged ≥45 years) from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). We used principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) to divide participants into six subgroups based on 70 life course factors. Five key life course factors were identified based on correlation analysis and their contribution to aging health. Physiological dysregulation (PD) was calculated by using eight biomarkers in the 2015 CHARLS biomarker dataset. Linear regression, logistic regression, and mediation models were used to explore the complex associations of life course subgroups, key factors, unhealthy lifestyle, depression symptom with PD. Results: Life course subgroups were significantly associated with PD after adjusting chronological age and gender ( β : 0.08-0.17, all P <0.05). Life-course subgroups and key factors, including adverse experiences in adulthood and lower education level, were significantly associated with unhealthy lifestyle ( β : 0.04-0.52, all P <0.05). Life-course subgroups and key factors, including childhood trauma, parental health in childhood, adverse experiences in adulthood, and lower education level, were significantly associated with depression symptom ( OR : 1.16-4.76, all P <0.05). Mediation analysis showed that unhealthy lifestyle had partial mediating effect on the association of life course subgroups and key factors, including adverse experiences in adulthood, and lower education levels, with PD (3.1%-3.6%). Depression symptom had partial mediating effect on the association of life course subgroups and key factors, including childhood trauma, adverse experience in adulthood, and lower education level, with PD (6.0%-16.2%). Conclusions: Unhealthy lifestyle and depression symptom has partial mediating effect on the impact of life course factors on aging health. It is important to pay attention to these two modifiable factors while targeting childhood trauma and adverse experience in adulthood.

Abstract

Objective: To identify whether naringenin plays a protective role during thoracic aneurysm formation in Marfan syndrome., Methods: To validate the effect of naringenin, Fbn1 C1039G/+ mice, the mouse model of Marfan syndrome, were fed with naringenin, and the disease progress was evaluated. The molecular mechanism of naringenin was further investigated via in vitro studies, such as bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET), atomic force microscope and radioligand receptor binding assay., Results: Six-week-old Fbn1 C1039G/+ mice were fed with naringenin for 20 weeks. Compared with the control group, naringenin significantly suppressed the aortic expansion [ Fbn1 C1039G/+ vs. Fbn1 C1039G/+ +naringenin: (2.49±0.47) mm, n= 18 vs. (1.87±0.19) mm, n= 22, P < 0.05], the degradation of elastin, and the expression and activity of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2) and MMP9 in the ascending aorta of Fbn1 C1039G/+ mice. Besides, treatment with naringenin for 6 weeks also attenuated the disease progress among the 20-week-old Fbn1 C1039G/+ mice with established thoracic aortic aneurysms [ Fbn1 C1039G/+ vs. Fbn1 C1039G/+ +naringenin: (2.24±0.23) mm, n= 8 vs. (1.90±0.17) mm, n= 8, P < 0.05]. To understand the underlying molecular mechanisms, we examined the effects of naringenin on angiotensin Ⅱ type 1 receptor (AT1) signaling and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling respectively, which were the dominant signaling pathways contributing to aortopathy in Marfan syndrome as previously reported. The results showed that naringenin decreased angiotensin Ⅱ (Ang Ⅱ)-induced phosphorylation of protein kinase C (PKC) and extracellular regulating kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) in HEK293A cell overexpressing AT1 receptor. Moreover, naringenin inhibited Ang Ⅱ-induced calcium mobilization and uclear factor of activated T-cells (NFAT) signaling. The internalization of AT1 receptor and its binding to β-arrestin-2 with Ang Ⅱ induction were also suppressed by naringenin. As evidenced by atomic force microscope and radioligand receptor binding assay, naringenin inhibited Ang Ⅱ binding to AT1 receptor. In terms of TGF-β signaling, we found that feeding the mice with naringenin decreased the phosphorylation of Smad2 and ERK1/2 as well as the expression of TGF-β downstream genes. Besides, the serum level of TGF-β was also decreased by naringenin in the Fbn1 C1039G/+ mice. Furthermore, we detected the effect of naringenin on platelet, a rich source of TGF-β, both in vivo and in vitro . And we found that naringenin markedly decreased the TGF-β level by inhibiting the activation of platelet., Conclusion: Our study showed that naringenin has a protective effect on thoracic aortic aneurysm formation in Marfan syndrome by suppressing both AT1 and TGF-β signaling.
