-
Marlee Marsh and John Zubizarreta
- Abstract
Successful honors programs inspire and sustain a vibrant and committed faculty. This essay presents an established honors program which demonstrates, through varied faculty commitments over time, honors as a valuable asset in identifying, recruiting, supporting, and rewarding a strong, creative, loyal faculty that benefits the entire institution. Authors suggest multiple ways for establishing and nurturing the kinds of relationships that enhance both honors and its dedicated faculty. Leveraging honors for professional growth and pedagogical development, these include the design of interdisciplinary courses and special seminars, mentoring of student projects, engaging in study-travel ventures, winning distinguished awards, serving on important committees, earning academic grants, and presenting at conferences. As exemplified in its long and rich history, honors continues to be an incubating space for faculty development and student success.

- Abstract
This paper reports the results of a survey of 404 US mathematics education faculty regarding the research expectations for obtaining tenure. Survey questions asked about expected numbers of publications per year, how much different types of publications (e.g., journal articles, book chapters) and scholarly activities (e.g., giving presentations, obtaining funding) were valued. Statistical analyses were used to examine differences in these results across three demographic characteristics (institution type, research commitment, department). We found statistically significant differences related to each of these variables. Research expectations varied substantially across institution type. For example, the average expected number of yearly publications was 2.23, 1.63, and 0.99 papers at R1, R2, and Other institutions respectively. By contrast, research expectations seldom varied by department. [For the complete proceedings, see ED657822.]

7. Hybrid Simulation of a Scientific Conference: Inquiry-Based Learning to Enable Master's Degree Students to Acquire Research Skills
- Author
-
Patricia Brockmann
- Abstract
A novel course concept to enable master's degree students to acquire research skills is described as an experience report. A hybrid, inquiry-based format was developed to simulate each phase of writing and presenting a research paper at a scientific conference. Students self-organized into groups to conduct each phase of the research process to conduct a research project for a scientific topic, bionic computation. Weekly group meetings with the instructor were conducted via video conference. Students learned to formulate research questions, write abstracts, acquire experimental data and evaluate open-source libraries and tools to build their own experimental models. An in-house, mini-conference was held in person, in which each group held a presentation of their work. At the end of the semester, a retrospective was held to reflect on students' experiences and summarize the lessons they have learned. After the course, slight majority of the students stated that they could imagine writing a paper about their master's theses and taking part in a real conference. 8. Learning Analytics in Support of Inclusiveness and Disabled Students: A Systematic Review
- Author
-
Mohammad Khalil, Sharon Slade, and Paul Prinsloo
- Abstract
This article maps considerations of inclusiveness and support for students with disabilities by reviewing articles within the field of learning analytics. The study involved a PRISMA-informed systematic review of two popular digital libraries, namely Clarivate's Web of Science, and Elsevier's Scopus for peer-reviewed journal articles and conference proceedings. A final corpus of 26 articles was analysed. Findings show that although the field of learning analytics emerged in 2011, none of the studies identified here covered topics of inclusiveness in education before the year of 2016. Screening also shows that learning analytics provides great potential to promote inclusiveness in terms of reducing discrimination, increasing retention among disadvantaged students, and validating particular learning designs for marginalised groups. Gaps in this potential are also identified. The article aims to provide valuable insight into what is known about learning analytics and inclusiveness and contribute knowledge to this particular nascent area for researchers and institutional stakeholders.

10. Languaging and Language Awareness in the Global Age 2020-2023: Digital Engagement and Practice in Language Teaching and Learning in (Post-) Pandemic Times
- Author
-
Michiko Weinmann, Rod Neilsen, and Carolina Cabezas Benalcázar
- Abstract
This paper discusses key themes of the 15th biennial conference of the Association for Language Awareness (2020), with a focus on increasing digital engagement in language education. The COVID-19 pandemic occasioned an abrupt transition to emergency remote language teaching and learning (ERLTL) worldwide. The ALA 2020 conference was also affected by this transition; originally planned as a located conference in Geelong, Australia, it was eventually held online, a first in ALA's conference history. The current paper engages with contemporary debates of language teaching and learning in two ways. Firstly, it traces recent discussions by presenting key findings from five papers given at the conference, and secondly, via a scoping review of literature focusing on critical lessons from the pandemic regarding language teaching and learning. The review captures recent research from the Australasian region. Key debates identified in the literature include the needs of teachers and learners during the transition to online learning, and how student engagement was affected. The literatures highlight that both educators and students have been developing new practices in teaching and learning resulting from the shift to online and blended modes, which may continue to shape language education and new pedagogies in the future.

11. Bataille and the Poverty of Academic Form
- Author
-
Ansgar Allen
- Abstract
This paper argues that the dominant modes of academic address, the conference paper, the journal article, and the monograph, reinforce problematic and exclusionary assumptions concerning what counts as legitimate research, whilst also restricting academic enquiry and impoverishing intellectual life. It makes its case by exploring in some detail the intellectual commitments of one the West's more wayward 20th century thinkers, Georges Bataille. It suggests that Bataille presents not simply a conceptual armoury (and one among many) for critiquing Western logocentrism from within, but offers an example of what a less domesticated, less stylistically narrowed mode of thinking might look like.

12. Feedback as Socialization in Doctoral Education: Towards the Enactment of Authentic Feedback
- Author

- Abstract
Feedback processes are crucial in doctoral supervision but require adaptation to meet the changing nature of the doctorate, and increasing impetus to publish during the candidature. This study builds on concepts of authentic feedback and feedback literacy to chart possibilities for the development of feedback socialization in doctoral education. Semi-structured interviews with twenty doctoral supervisors in a faculty of education in Hong Kong aimed to investigate their understandings of feedback, its enactment within the doctoral process, and broader feedback inputs beyond the supervisor. Data were analyzed through reflexive thematic analysis and trustworthiness was enhanced through a member checking focus group with a sub-set of four of the interviewees. The analysis is informed by sociocultural theory with emphasis on co-construction of insights between supervisors and doctoral students. The findings highlight supervisors' understandings of feedback as comments, interaction and follow-up; and authentic feedback generated from presenting at conferences or submitting to journals. A contribution of the paper lies in bringing to bear conceptual insights from feedback research in undergraduate education to inform feedback in doctoral supervision. We deploy the concept of authentic feedback, practices that resemble those of the relevant workplace, to demonstrate how journal peer review facilitates the socialization of doctoral students into academic publishing norms. Key supervisor roles lie in guiding the enactment of responses to peer review, and supporting the development of resilience. Proposed features of supervisors' feedback literacy include sociocultural-based dialogue and co-construction, emphasis on the enactment of feedback and working with authentic feedback of different forms.

- Abstract
The importance of engaging students with complex societal challenges has led to the adoption of various interdisciplinary teaching and learning practices in both K-12 and higher education. However, interdisciplinary learning is one of the most complex domains of contemporary educational practice, and, despite its significance, remains significantly undertheorized and under-researched. This Special Issue highlights empirical research efforts toward understanding interdisciplinary learning in its complexity. It simultaneously aims to (1) advance ecological perspectives that encompass concepts and methodologies for studying complex heterogeneous learning practices and (2) apply these perspectives to the research of interdisciplinary learning - of how people learn across and beyond disciplines. This introduction provides a historical context for interdisciplinary learning, introduces an ecological stance toward researching learning across and beyond disciplines, and reviews critical theoretical and methodological challenges within interdisciplinary learning, arguing that the field of the learning sciences is well-positioned to address these challenges. It discusses how the contributions presented in this special issue shed light on theoretical, methodological, empirical, and design aspects of interdisciplinary learning and offer a basis for further design work and research.

Hartono Bancong
- Abstract
In the development of physical theories, thought experiments play a crucial role. Research on this topic began in 1976 and has continued to the present. This study aims to provide a more complete picture of the progress of thought experiments over the past two decades. To achieve this, this study employs bibliometric mapping methods. A total of 679 published papers were analyzed, including articles (504), conference papers (92), and book chapters (83). This data was retrieved from the Scopus database. The study's findings reveal that research and publications on thought experiments are highly valued and have received significant attention over the past eight years. According to the findings, 90% of the top 20 source titles contributing to thought experiments are from journals in the first and second quartiles (Q1 and Q2). This quartile ranking shows the quality and significant influence of a journal. The geographical distribution indicates that the United States contributes the most to thought experiments research, with 213 documents, 2592 citations, and 47 links. We also identified several prospective keywords that could be the focus of future research, including artificial intelligence, physics education, fiction, God, theology, productive imagination, technology, speculative design, and critical design. Therefore, this study provides a thorough picture of thought experiment research trends and future directions of potential topics that can be the focus of future researchers.

- Abstract
It is essential to establish a multi-dimensional postgraduate quality evaluation system for student assessment and training. This study aimed to explore the construction of the multiindex and hierarchical comprehensive evaluation system for postgraduate training in science and engineering based on the Context, Input, Process, Product (CIPP) model using Analytic Hierarchy Process. It involved 756 postgraduates in physics and engineering who were randomly selected via the Internet. Data were collected from the questionnaire about postgraduates' basic information. After collection, Factor Analysis was used to verify the rationality of the design of second-level and third-level indicators, and adjust the corresponding weights. On this basis, Cluster Analysis was used to classify the training quality of the postgraduates based on their scores on academic ability, basic quality, and social ability indicators. The results revealed that the index system includes 4 first-level indicators,12 second-level indicators and 36 third-level indicators, and different weights being assigned to the indicators according to their influence on the training quality of postgraduates in science and engineering. This study also provides some reference for the quality of science and engineering postgraduate training in Chinese universities by proposing relevant measures, which could be interesting also for international audience.

- Abstract
This study analyzed the National Communication Association (NCA) members' perceptions regarding the effectiveness of their own and their peer presentations and the challenges they faced when preparing and giving conference presentations. Overall, participants (n = 187) feel fairly content with the effectiveness of NCA conference presentations and the value they have gained from them. The effectiveness of others' presentations has a significant association with members' perceived value of the conference presentations. The "lack of experience" and "lack of confidence" are key variables that heighten anxiety which can impact the effectiveness of presentations. "Process anxiety" was positively associated with presentation effectiveness whereas "performance anxiety" was negatively associated with presentation effectiveness. This needs assessment provides informed suggestions for making academic presentations more effective in the future.

20. Digging into an International Adult Education Andragogy Epistemological Foundation: Four Variations of Caring Love (Dealing Bountifully)
- Author
-
Henschke, John A.
- Abstract
This paper recaps Henschke's 2021 CIAE Pre-conference paper on the fact that the first 200 years of the epistemology and practice of adult education in the United States was almost exclusively sponsored by the Church. Even in ancient times from the Bible book of Ecclesiastes, third chapter, there are 14 sets of things [28 in number] that God set to occupy us in this life on earth; beside this He also placed 'eternity in our hearts.' Thus is identified an often-overlooked broad spectrum of adult education/ andragogical epistemology of religion, spirituality, and piety/devotion. My life has been mainly guided by what I declare as God's call(s) for me on earth and 'eternity in my heart' for the afterlife to come. This background will then be connected with this year's (2022) CIAE Pre-conference focus of the paper on a deeper probe into four major variations of caring and love exemplified and included in God's creation with elements, such as: Four sets of Greek, Hebrew words, and English explanations with supporting illustrations of caring and love; presented in the order mentioned above a. Eros, Yada, sublime intimate sexual love; b. Storge, Basar, the good news of 'I've got your back'; c. Philia, Rea, family relationships and common interests; and d. Agape, Ahav, God's eternal, divine love for humankind. All of this is set within this life on earth and in the afterlife (eternity) to come. [For the full proceedings, see ED628982.]

Chen, Xieling, Zou, Di, Xie, Haoran, Chen, Guanliang, Lin, Jionghao, and Cheng, Gary
- Abstract
The diversity and advance of information, communication, and analytical technologies and their increasing adoption to assist instruction and learning give rise to various technology-driven conferences (e.g., artificial intelligence in education) in educational technology. Previous reviews on educational technology commonly focused on journal articles while seldom including mainstream conference papers which also contribute to an important part of scientific output in computer science and emerging disciplines like educational technology and are equally and even more important than articles in knowledge transmission. Hence, conference papers should also be included in bibliometric studies to produce a complete and precise picture of scientific production concerning educational technology. This study, therefore, uses bibliometrics and topic modeling to analyze papers from mainstream conferences, including Artificial Intelligence in Education, Learning Analytics and Knowledge, Educational Data Mining, Intelligent Tutoring System, and Learning at Scale, focusing on contributors, collaborations, and particularly research topics and topic evolutions to inform relevant stakeholders about educational technology's development and its future. Results indicate promising areas like affective computing and behavior mining for adaptive instruction, recommender systems in personalized learning recommendations, eye-tracking for cognitive process diagnosis, videos for feedback provision, and natural language processing in discourse analysis and language education.

- Abstract
Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) provide an efficient mechanism to provide many students with an original research project. CUREs often culminate in a capstone poster presentation, but reports on these classes usually focus on the preparation and execution of the project rather than communication of the results. This article summarizes a CURE-associated research seminar that focuses on developing the communication and interpersonal skills required for the production and presentation of a conference poster. The class is designed to provide students with the tools and confidence for effective communication of their research. From the two class offerings to date, the 18 participating students have received five awards from 19 conference presentations.

24. Virtual Internationalization to Support Comprehensive Internationalization in Higher Education
- Author
-
Bruhn-Zass, Elisa
- Abstract
The study develops and presents a concept of Virtual Internationalization (VI) in higher education, which refers to internationalization implemented using information and communications technology (ICT). VI is contextualized with the inclusiveness of international experiences and with external challenges to internationalization (posed, for example, by the COVID-19 pandemic). Conceived as an institution-spanning concept, VI is developed from the ACE-CIGE model of Comprehensive Internationalization. It is inferred from actual practice based on a content analysis of conference abstracts from relevant fields, employing coding and computer-assisted text analysis (CATA). Based on the findings, the VI concept includes "strategies and articulated institutional commitment" as a transversal category and "online and distance education" (ODE) as an additional category in contrast to the concept of Comprehensive Internationalization. This research furthermore considers two dimensions of VI: one that is directly internationalization-related and the other concerned with broader aims of the combination of the virtual and the international. It concludes with a perspective on a "new normal" of hybrid internationalization in higher education.

- Abstract
Traditional definitions and assessments of creativity often neglect to identify the complexity surrounding Black students' brilliance, leading to lack of access and funding. Further, even when recognized, Black students are often funneled into programs that do not facilitate positive development of their racial-ethnic identity. Through our systematic review of 155 publications, we developed the BlackCreate Framework to illustrate how effective Black creative educational experiences (BCEEs) create fugitive spaces for creative expression and education. Within these spaces, both societal oppression and community assets are explicitly discussed as a part of the creative process, providing students methods for adaptive coping and for addressing systemic inequities. Given these findings, we advocate for consistent funding and support for fugitive spaces to promote Black students' creativity.

26. Place in Film: Landscapes as More than Setting
- Author
-
Paul Sommer
- Abstract
"Landscapes of Learning," in the conference title, prompts a literal reading of landscape and its place in film analysis. This article considers landscape's mental and emotional dimensions and the discovery of landscape as a malleable analytical concept. A critique of film as a visual text is invited. Particular analytical approaches to film follow, through notions of soundscape and, using Gilles Deleuze's work on cinema, through orientations such as 'the tectonics of sensation' (percept and affect) and 'the mise-en-scène of the brain' (landscape as a mental construct). These concerns and their implications put us in a position to approach the rest of the conference title's focus on hearts, minds and stories, both in terms of film study in the English classroom and in the light of questions and approaches that open up a film for students.

Purpose: The paper aims to identify the level of support and expand on the issues recently raised in the literature concerning critical mass theory and board gender diversity (BGD). Design/methodology/approach: The authors systematically searched relevant articles on the Scopus database in March 2024, identifying 132 articles. After removing book chapters, conference papers and reviews, the number was reduced to 122. An additional 16 were discarded as they were irrelevant (e.g. political, theoretical or conceptual) to the current study, leaving a final sample of 106 articles. This longitudinal study covers the period from 2016 to 2024. Findings: The paper finds compelling evidence supporting the critical mass theory and underscores the importance of corporate BGD in today's society. It also offers explanations for the few cases where critical mass theory may not be fully supported. It highlights that the performance benefits of corporate BGD, in many cases, only exist when there is a critical mass of female directors on the board. Practical implications: It lends support to policymakers in pursuing corporate BGD through quotas, provided that the incentive is not just to fill the numbers. Originality/value: The paper offers a unique perspective on the level of support for the critical mass theory. It is believed to be the first paper to conduct a longitudinal study to investigate the support for the critical mass theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction Material and Methods Results Conclusions One of the key challenges regarding the management of twins involves choosing the optimal mode of delivery, which is strongly influenced by the final presentation of both fetuses. In cases of vertex–nonvertex pregnancies attempting the trial of vaginal delivery, external cephalic version (ECV) is one of possible management options. The main objective of this review was to collect and summarize available data in terms of the application of ECV in the population of nonvertex second twins.Using the PRISMA guidelines, we searched for original, English‐language studies investigating ECV in nonvertex second twins. The PubMed/MEDLINE, SCOPUS, and COCHRANE databases were searched until May 2024. Reviews, case reports, editorials, and conference papers were excluded from further analysis. Out of 260 papers retrieved, 10 were subjected to the final analysis in terms of success rates, modes of delivery, and adverse outcomes. The total number of ECVs was 289, with an overall success rate of 64.4%. In the group of successful versions, vertex vaginal delivery was achieved in 171 cases (91.9%). The incidence of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes was low.The purpose of this review was to consolidate and update the current knowledge regarding ECV in nonvertex second twins. Based on the results of this series of studies, ECV appears to be a reasonable management option. However, it is important to highlight several significant limitations. The primary concern is the lack of recent research in this field over the past three decades, with the most recent study in our review being published in 1998. Furthermore, the actual number of studies addressing this topic is relatively low, characterized by a retrospective nature and questionable methodologies. These limitations make it challenging to draw definitive conclusions for clinical practice. This is an important message for our community, emphasizing the need for further studies in this area, particularly randomized controlled trials, to evaluate the safety and success rate of vaginal twin delivery after ECV when the second twin presents in a nonvertex position. Purpose: The literature on knowledge management in sustainable supply chain (KMSSC) has witnessed significant growth in the past two decades. However, a scientometric review that consolidates the primary trends and clusters within this topic has been notably absent. This paper aims to scrutinize recent advancements and identify the intellectual underpinnings of KMSSC research conducted between 2002 and 2022. Design/methodology/approach: The present review employs a scientometric analysis approach via visualization maps of prolific contributions, co-citation, co-occurrence and thematic networks to examine a total of 114 articles and conference papers on KMSSC. Findings: Emerging research frontiers and hotspots are revealed and a state-of-the-art framework of KMSSC research structure is developed. Practical implications: The review provides significant implications that guide KMSSC research and better inform sustainability decisions in the supply chain context. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first review to thoroughly synthesize the intersected domain of KMSSC using scientometric analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Educational outcomes are heavily reliant on student engagement, yet this concept is complex and subject to diverse interpretations. The intricacy of the issue arises from the broad spectrum of interpretations, each contributing to the understanding of student engagement as both complex and multifaceted. Given the emergence and increasing use of Learning Analytics (LA) within higher education to provide enhanced insight into engagement, research is needed to understand how engagement is conceptualised by LA researchers and what dimensions and indicators of engagement are captured by studies that use log data. This systematic review synthesises primary research indexed in the Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest, A + Education, and SAGE journals or captured through snowballing in OpenAlex. Studies were included if they were published between 2011 and 2023, were journal articles or conference papers and explicitly focused on LA and engagement or disengagement within formal higher education settings. 159 studies were included for data extraction within EPPI Reviewer. The findings reveal that LA research overwhelmingly approaches engagement using observable behavioural engagement measures, such as clicks and task duration, with very few studies exploring multiple dimensions of engagement. Ongoing issues with methodological reporting quality were identified, including a lack of detailed contextual information, and recommendations for future research and practice are provided. Background/Objectives: The healthcare sector is rapidly growing, aiming to promote health, provide treatment, and enhance well-being. This paper focuses on the organ donation and transplantation system, a vital aspect of healthcare. It offers a comprehensive review of challenges in global organ donation and transplantation, highlighting issues of fairness and transparency, and compares centralized architecture-based models and blockchain-based decentralized models. Methods: This work reviews 370 publications from 2016 to 2023 on organ donation management systems. Out of these, 85 publications met the inclusion criteria, including 67 journal articles, 2 doctoral theses, and 16 conference papers. About 50.6% of these publications focus on global challenges in the system. Additionally, 12.9% of the publications examine centralized architecture-based models, and 36.5% of the publications explore blockchain-based decentralized models. Results: Concerns about organ trafficking, illicit trade, system distrust, and unethical allocation are highlighted, with a lack of transparency as the primary catalyst in organ donation and transplantation. It has been observed that centralized architecture-based models use technologies such as Python, Java, SQL, and Android Technology but face data storage issues. In contrast, blockchain-based decentralized models, mainly using Ethereum and a subset on Hyperledger Fabric, benefit from decentralized data storage, ensure transparency, and address these concerns efficiently. Conclusions: It has been observed that blockchain technology-based models are the better option for organ donation management systems. Further, suggestions for future directions for researchers in the field of organ donation management systems have been presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The examination of the lead–lag effect between different publication types, incorporating a temporal dimension, is very significant for assessing research. In this article, we introduce a novel framework to quantify the lead–lag effect between the research topics of conference papers and journal papers. We first identify research topics via the text‐embedding‐based topic modeling technique BERTopic, then extract the research topics of each time slice, construct and visualize the similarity matrix of topics to reveal the time‐lag direction and finally quantify the lead–lag effect by four proposed indicators, as well as by average influence topic similarity comparison maps. We conduct a detailed analysis of 19,166 bibliographic data for top conference papers and journal papers from 2015 to 2019 in the data mining field, calculate the similarity of topics obtained by BERTopic between each time slice divided by quarters. The results show that journal paper topics lag behind conference paper topics in the data mining field. The most significant lead–lag effect is 2.5 years, with approximately 33.45% of topics affected by this lag. The methodology presented here holds potential for broader application in the analysis of lead–lag effects across diverse research areas, offering valuable insights into the state of research development and informing policy decisions. ABSTRACT We reviewed the scientific literature to assess the current status of recreational fishing in the Neotropical region. In total, 122 publications met our criteria and are included here. Since 1990, the number of studies published on recreational fishing in the region significantly increased. Recreational fishing was evaluated in 13 countries and two territories. Most studies were in marine environments. In total, 372 fish species captured through recreational Neotropical fishing were registered. In South American countries, the presence of nonnative species was significant. Studies were concentrated in a few countries or were not published in scientific articles, conference papers, or book chapters, and some aquatic environments, such as coastal areas, bays, coastal lagoons, and reservoirs, were not studied. In addition, there are few lines of investigation into the practice of this activity in the region, and new investigations are necessary, especially with respect to environmental problems. This research presents a comprehensive review and meta-analysis of literature to examine the impact of various leadership styles on organizational adaptive performance (AP). AP is essential for job performance, especially in environments undergoing rapid changes. Previous reviews on AP found that transformational and self-leadership had had a positive influence on job adaptivity, while the relationship between other leadership styles and AP had not been clear. First, authors outlined the theoretical framework of AP and leadership, clarifying how job adaptivity and the different leadership styles are defined and discussed in the scientific literature. Subsequently four scientific databases were explored to identify studies that investigate the Leadership and AP' relationship. 32 scientific articles and 2 conference papers were investigated for review, of which 31 were used to conduct a meta-analysis; 52 different effect sizes from 32 samples were identified for a total sample size of 11.640 people. Qualitative synthesis revealed that the influence of different leadership styles on AP depended on contextual variables and on aspects related to the nature of the work. Moreover, it was found that leadership supported AP through motivational and relational aspects. Through this meta-analysis, it was found that a significant positive relationship between leadership and AP existed (Zr =.39, SE =.04, p <.001. 95%CI [.32,.47], r =.37). However, no differences emerged from the different leadership styles examined in the studies. This review deepens the importance of leadership as organizational factor that affect the employees' likelihood of dealing with continuously emergent changes at work, extended the search to emerging leadership approaches to highlight the value of collective contributions, ethics, and moral and sustainable elements that could positively affect AP. Niching in global optimisation refers to a set of techniques designed to identify multiple optimal solutions within a nonlinear, multimodal landscape. These algorithms enhance the exploratory capabilities of conventional metaheuristics by maintaining diversity and supporting coexisting subpopulations across a search space, thereby allowing a more deterministic approach to the true global optimum. Niching algorithms can be categorised into three primary subfamilies: sequential or temporal niching, parallel or spatial niching, and hybrid models which integrate various niching subparadigms. This research paper aims to explore the effectiveness and limitations of different niching algorithms by providing a systematic literature review of the theoretical frameworks within these subfamilies. Eleven major niching native subparadigms have been identified: fitness sharing, crowding, clearing, speciation, restricted tournament selection, clustering, multiobjectivisation, embedded hybrid methods, ensemble hybrid methods, and other hybrid approaches. This study offers a detailed examination of each paradigm's theoretical foundation, including template algorithmic layouts, and delineates the unique elements of each approach. Research contributions from the inception of niching to 2024 have been aggregated from the SCOPUS database and systematically classified. Data aggregation included journal articles, conference papers, review papers, and research reports published in English only following the PRISMA framework. Application papers with novel theoretical ideas were also taken into account. In all, 203 research works were retained under the inclusion and exclusion criteria. This study concludes with overarching high-level recommendations for future research in modern niching optimisation, emphasising the development of space and time-scalable methods to enhance the adaptability and efficiency of optimisation algorithms in diverse, increasingly multivariable multimodal problems. This study set out to examine internal democracy and elections in Nigeria with reference to the People's Democratic Party (PDP) (1998-2015). Election is an integral element of the democratic process. In other words, the growth of democracy in any country is measure by the conduct of elections. For elections to yield the desire result there is needs to adhere to stipulated laws. Internal democracy therefore is the basis of free, fair and credible elections. When the process that produced elected official lack credibility and transparency, it has grave implication for democratic consolidation. The theoretical framework adopted for the study was the elite theory propounded by Robert Michel, Gaetano Mosca and Vilfredo Pareto in the 1890s. Secondary source of data was utilized for the study. It involves the collection of data from textbooks, magazines and conference papers amongst others. The study finds out that since 1998 following the formation of the PDP, that the Party had dominated the Nigeria political scene especially at the federal level. The Party dominated the presidency for sixteen years. However, her dominance on the Nigeria political scene was terminated following the outcome of the 2015 general elections in which the Party lost not only the presidency but also most States she had earlier control. The study recommends that there should be a regular convening of PDP national executive meetings of elective and non- elective conventions as stipulated in the PDP constitutions, were serious undemocratic issues that threatened the Party are address. ENGRAVING ,JAPANESE art ,ART colleges ,CULTURAL property ,CONFERENCE papers - Abstract
Recent research conducted by Heritage Crafts, a prominent national advocacy organisation dedicated to preserving traditional heritage crafts in the UK, has unveiled a concerning trend: several traditional craft skills teeter on the edge of extinction within the UK. This revelation stems from the Heritage Crafts Red List of Endangered Crafts, an initiative which identifies crafts facing the risk of endangerment. In their recent 2023 publication, Heritage Crafts highlighted the distressing decline of cut and engraved glass craftsmanship in the UK, categorising and placing both brilliant cutting (as endangered) and copper wheel engraving (as critically endangered) on the Red List of Endangered Crafts in the UK. This means that these crafts pose the risk of not being actively practised. In December 2023, the alarming downturn of these crafts in the UK was explored and discussed during a conference held at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), entitled Edo-Kiriko: The Art of Japanese Cut Crystal. This event explored the cross-cultural connection and exchange that exists between Scotland and Japan, drawing upon a rich historical exchange that saw the transmission of Western-style glassmaking from Scotland to Japan in the 1870s–1880s. It also details the more recent exchange that has been in place between Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) and the Horiguchi Kiriko glass studio in Tokyo, Japan. This modern-day exchange has seen the recent transmission of glass-cutting skills through a masterclass led by Toru Horiguchi at ECA. This paper presents this conference, introducing the invited speakers and creating a commentary on the proceedings and the plenary discussions that unfolded. Focus and discussion will be given to the factors that have contributed to the current decline of cut and engraved glassmaking in the UK and the possible measures that could be taken to support and safeguard this field. The final part of this paper will offer a reflection on the conference proceedings and will conclude by making an urgent call for the future of cut and engraved glass craftsmanship in the UK. It is hoped this paper will draw attention to the urgent need for support from education and funding bodies, to safeguard and protect these vital heritage crafts, which boast a rich history in the UK. Out-of-home Media is constantly changing, incorporating new technologies, such as digital technology; this media is advancing faster than the research on the effects of it on consumers and the government in regulating it. In this sense, in order to contribute to advances in research and production within Information Design, we sought to investigate the influence of digital out-of-home (DOOH) media on driver perception and driving, striving to answer three main questions: What is the influence of DOOH Media on driving? What guidelines may be found in the scientific literature for managing these media in the landscape? What are the suggestions for future studies in this field? Research procedures involved an integrative literature review to uncover research and advances in the field of digital out-of-home (DOOH) media indexed in recognized databases which resulted in the full text analysis and synthesis of 32 studies, considering papers in scientific journals, conference papers, PhD thesis and research reports. The results pointed out that digital advertisements, especially animated ones, catch the attention of drivers and may compromise road safety. The distraction level may be affected depending on the luminance, brightness, and contrast levels and the number of words on the screen. Also, it was observed that young and senior drivers are more susceptible, and gender differences influence the perception and attention to the advertisements, although they are inconclusive. Studies recommend limiting words, controlling luminance, and adequately placing the advertisements for regulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We consider several types of internal queries, that is, questions about fragments of a given text T specified in constant space by their locations in T. Our main result is an optimal data structure for internal pattern matching (IPM) queries, which, given two fragments x and y, ask for a representation of all fragments contained in y and matching x exactly. This problem can be viewed as an internal version of the fundamental exact pattern matching problem: We are looking for exact occurrences of one substring of T within another substring of T. Our data structure answers IPM queries in time proportional to the quotient |y|/|x| of the fragments' lengths, which is required due to the worst-case information content of the output. If T is a text of length n over an integer alphabet of size σ, then our data structure occupies O(n/logσ n) machine words (that is, O(n log σ) bits) and admits an O(n/logσn)-time construction algorithm. We also show how to use IPM queries for answering internal queries corresponding to other classic string processing problems. Among others, we derive optimal data structures reporting the periods of a fragment and testing the cyclic equivalence of two fragments. Since the publication of the conference version of this paper [Kociumaka et al., Internal pattern matching queries in a text and applications, SODA 2015], IPM queries have found numerous further applications, following the path paved by the classic longest common extension (LCE) queries of Landau and Vishkin [J. Comput. System Sci., 37 (1988), pp. 63-78]. In particular, IPM queries have been implemented in grammar-compressed and dynamic settings and, along with LCE queries, constitute elementary operations of the PILLAR model, developed by Charalampopoulos, Kociumaka, and Wellnitz [Faster approximate pattern matching: A unified approach, FOCS 2020] to design approximate pattern matching algorithms that work in multiple settings. All our algorithms are deterministic, whereas the data structure in the conference version of the paper only admits a randomized construction in O(n) expected time. To achieve this, we provide a novel construction of string synchronizing sets of Kempa and Kociumaka [String synchronizing sets: Sublinear-time BWT construction and optimal LCE data structure, STOC 2019]. Our method, based on a new restricted version of the recompression technique of Jez [J. ACM, 63 (2016), pp. 4:1-4:51], yields a hierarchy of O(log n) string synchronizing sets covering the whole spectrum of the fragments' lengths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Labor scarcity, especially during peak periods, significantly challenges Bangladesh's agriculture. The widespread adoption of mechanical transplanting in rice cultivation holds the potential to address this challenge. Commercializing this technology could open significant opportunities for small and marginal farmers, ultimately bolstering food security in Bangladesh. This review paper assesses the economic feasibility of mechanical transplanting compared to manual methods. The study involved an extensive literature review of relevant research literature, journals, conference papers and academic presentations to gather and analyze pertinent data. Manual operated transplanters, particularly the riding type are well suited for small scale farmers due to their user friendliness and higher field capacity. Eight row transplanters are recommended for more significant operations or business oriented farms, surpassing their four and six row counterparts in field capacity, efficiency and operational speed. Within the category of walking type transplanters, the six row variant is more fuel efficient than its four row counterpart which excels in functional utility. Mechanical transplanting is a cost effective and advantageous practice in Bangladesh, delivering higher yields at a reduced cost. The availability of an affordable and accessible transplanter is imperative in the Bangladeshi context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The convective hot-air drying technology can cause physicochemical, nutritional, and organoleptic losses in the mango (Mangifera indica). The present Systematic Review was carried out with the objective of comparing mango dehydration technologies to identify the effects on the physicochemical, nutritional, and organoleptic properties of the fruit. Through a review of published scientific and conference papers in the Scopus database, adjusted to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology, a total of 134 documents dated between 2000 and December 6 of 2022 were obtained; 76 of these documents were finally included in the bibliographic and theoretical analysis. Selection parameters emphasizing the relationship between the articles and the research topic, evidenced by including at least one of three dehydration technologies and the fruit of interest with an experimental or theoretical approach to the dehydration subject; review articles and surveys were excluded. Correlation graphs of bibliographic variables were made using the data mining software VantagePoint (version 15.1), which was graphically restructured in Microsoft Excel with the support of statistical analysis. Of the resulting articles, it was found that the countries with authors who participated most in scientific production like India, Brazil, Colombia, the United States, and Thailand, were those related to mango production or importation. Furthermore, the freeze-drying technology allows operating at lower temperatures than convective hot-air drying, contributing to the preservation of ascorbic acid, among other compounds. The refractance window has the shortest operation time to obtain moisture values between 10 and 20%. The dehydrated samples using the refractance window are smooth, homogeneous, non-porous, and comparable to the color obtained with freeze-drying, which is acceptable for industrial applications. Background: Seafarers are at an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), potentially due to a stressful working environment and behavioral risk factors. To develop better prevention strategies, it is important to elucidate the extent of this risk. Therefore, we conducted a systematic literature review on CVD in seafarers. Method: We conducted systematic searches in five databases. All studies investigating CVDs among occupational seafarers, published in articles or conference papers, were eligible for inclusion. The identified records were screened and reviewed by two independent researchers, who also evaluated the methodological quality of the included studies. Results: Three thousand nine hundred and seventeen records qualified for screening, and 55 were eligible for inclusion. Most of the studies were observational, including cohort, frequency, incidence or prevalence studies, and review of case records. Around half were assessed at risk of biased findings. Participants in the studies were primarily from North America or the European continent and work onboard transportation vessels. Many studies investigated CVDs as a cause of death, focusing on conditions such as CVD, ischemic heart disease, and myocardial infarction. Frequency of CVD conditions varied but indicate that seafarers face a greater risk compared to the reference populations or control groups. Environmental factors were mainly investigated as risk factors. Conclusion: Our results indicate a higher risk of CVDs among seafarers compared to reference or control groups. However, due to the variable quality of the evidence, well‐designed studies are needed to establish the causes of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in seafarers and to investigate behavioral aspects of cardiovascular risk. This paper discusses the present state of the art and forthcoming directions of digital library adoption (DLA) research over the past 30 years. By means of scientometric analysis, we synthesize 216 articles and conference papers published between 1992 and 2022 using visualization maps of prolific contributions, co-citation, co-occurrence, and thematic networks. The analysis reveals important findings concerning research evolution, models and theories, intellectual foundations, emerging streams, frontiers, and hotspots that inform DLA decisions. Moreover, the paper highlights future DLA research opportunities through addressing scarcely observed areas in the field. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt that comprehensively oversees the breadth and depth of the DLA research over a long-time span. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
