Abstract

The synergy of strong spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron interactions gives rise to unconventional topological states, such as topological Mott insulator, Weyl semimetal, and quantum spin liquid. In this study, we have grown single crystals of the pyrochlore iridate Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and explored its magnetic, lattice dynamical, and electronic properties. While Raman spectroscopy data reveal six phonon modes confirming the cubic \textit{Fd$\bar{3}$m} crystal symmetry, dc magnetic susceptibility data show no anomalies and hence indicate the absence of magnetic phase transitions down to 2~K. Both temperature-dependent electric transport and optical conductivity data reveal the metallic character of Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. The optical conductivity spectrum contains a mid-infrared absorption band, which becomes more pronounced with decreasing temperature due to spectral weight transfer from high to low energies. The presence of the mid-infrared band hints at the importance of correlation physics. Abstract

We address the resource allocation challenges in NextG cellular radio access networks (RAN), where heterogeneous user applications demand guarantees on throughput and service regularity. We leverage the Whittle indexability property to decompose the resource allocation problem, enabling the independent computation of relative priorities for each user. By simply allocating resources in decreasing order of these indices, we transform the combinatorial complexity of resource allocation into a linear one. We propose Windex, a lightweight approach for training neural networks to compute Whittle indices, considering constraint violation, channel quality, and system load. Implemented on a real-time RAN intelligent controller (RIC), our approach enables resource allocation decision times of less than 20$\mu$s per user and efficiently allocates resources in each 1ms scheduling time slot. Evaluation across standardized 3GPP service classes demonstrates significant improvements in service guarantees compared to existing schedulers, validated through simulations and emulations with over-the-air channel traces on a 5G testbed., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Media streaming is the dominant application over wireless edge (access) networks. The increasing softwarization of such networks has led to efforts at intelligent control, wherein application-specific actions may be dynamically taken to enhance the user experience. The goal of this work is to develop and demonstrate learning-based policies for optimal decision making to determine which clients to dynamically prioritize in a video streaming setting. We formulate the policy design question as a constrained Markov decision problem (CMDP), and observe that by using a Lagrangian relaxation we can decompose it into single-client problems. Further, the optimal policy takes a threshold form in the video buffer length, which enables us to design an efficient constrained reinforcement learning (CRL) algorithm to learn it. Specifically, we show that a natural policy gradient (NPG) based algorithm that is derived using the structure of our problem converges to the globally optimal policy. We then develop a simulation environment for training, and a real-world intelligent controller attached to a WiFi access point for evaluation. We empirically show that the structured learning approach enables fast learning. Furthermore, such a structured policy can be easily deployed due to low computational complexity, leading to policy execution taking only about 15$\mu$s. Using YouTube streaming experiments in a resource constrained scenario, we demonstrate that the CRL approach can increase quality of experience (QOE) by over 30\%., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

A new perspective is introduced regarding the analysis of Multiple Sequence Alignments (MSA), representing aligned data defined over a finite alphabet of symbols. The framework is designed to produce a block decomposition of an MSA, where each block is comprised of sequences exhibiting a certain site-coherence. The key component of this framework is an information theoretical potential defined on pairs of sites (links) within the MSA. This potential quantifies the expected drop in variation of information between the two constituent sites, where the expectation is taken with respect to all possible sub-alignments, obtained by removing a finite, fixed collection of rows. It is proved that the potential is zero for linked sites representing columns, whose symbols are in bijective correspondence and it is strictly positive, otherwise. It is furthermore shown that the potential assumes its unique minimum for links at which each symbol pair appears with the same multiplicity. Finally, an application is presented regarding anomaly detection in an MSA, composed of inverse fold solutions of a fixed tRNA secondary structure, where the anomalies are represented by inverse fold solutions of a different RNA structure., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

A marketplace is a place in cyberspace where there are commercial activities between buyers and sellers. Products offered from the marketplace have reviews to review. Shopee is the most visited marketplace by people and offers various products. Product reviews can provide benefits for other consumers in assessing the products offered. By utilizing NLP technology in particular, this study can classify positive sentiment and negative sentiment in product review data. The IndoBERT model is a model that can be used in NLP technology by utilizing the relationship between each input and output element as well as the weights to be calculated simultaneously. By utilizing this technology, sentiment analysis on Shopee product reviews provides maximum accuracy until 93% with different training conditions. This provide that IndoBERT model can show that the performance of the indoBERT model in this research is very good.

Abstract

This study aims to clarify the characteristics of settlement composition and house layout in Mamasa Toraja and Tana Toraja, Indonesia, focusing on spatial differences. The study reviewed relevant literature, selected settlements for the survey, and prepared settlement layout maps based on satellite imagery. Field surveys were conducted in 2022 to revise the settlement layout maps, record house plans, and interview local residents. The study found that despite having the same cultural roots, Tana Toraja and Mamasa Toraja have different settlement configurations and house layouts. The Tana Toraja settlements have a straight composition with warehouses on the north side and houses on the south side, flanked by a street-like plaza. In contrast, the composition of Mamasa Toraja settlements in the mountainous area is curvilinear, following the natural topography. Although social restrictions based on the caste system have long since been abolished, the layout of houses in the Toraja settlement, especially in Mamasa, still shows a social structure from when the caste system existed. This study provides insights into the unique spatial forms and cultural practices of the traditional villages in Mamasa Toraja and Tana Toraja, highlighting the importance of preserving their cultural heritage.

Abstract

Many stochastic continuous-state dynamical systems can be modeled as probabilistic programs with nonlinear non-polynomial updates in non-nested loops. We present two methods, one approximate and one exact, to automatically compute, without sampling, moment-based invariants for such probabilistic programs as closed-form solutions parameterized by the loop iteration. The exact method applies to probabilistic programs with trigonometric and exponential updates and is embedded in the Polar tool. The approximate method for moment computation applies to any nonlinear random function as it exploits the theory of polynomial chaos expansion to approximate non-polynomial updates as the sum of orthogonal polynomials. This translates the dynamical system to a non-nested loop with polynomial updates, and thus renders it conformable with the Polar tool that computes the moments of any order of the state variables. We evaluate our methods on an extensive number of examples ranging from modeling monetary policy to several physical motion systems in uncertain environments. Abstract

Probabilistic loops can be employed to implement and to model different processes ranging from software to cyber-physical systems. One main challenge is how to automatically estimate the distribution of the underlying continuous random variables symbolically and without sampling. We develop an approach, which we call K-series estimation, to approximate statically the joint and marginal distributions of a vector of random variables updated in a probabilistic non-nested loop with polynomial and non-polynomial assignments. Our approach is a general estimation method for an unknown probability density function with bounded support. It naturally complements algorithms for automatic derivation of moments in probabilistic loops such as~\cite{BartocciKS19,Moosbruggeretal2022}. Its only requirement is a finite number of moments of the unknown density. We show that Gram-Charlier (GC) series, a widely used estimation method, is a special case of K-series when the normal probability density function is used as reference distribution. We provide also a formulation suitable for estimating both univariate and multivariate distributions. 13. Mulching practices alter soil moisture, physico-chemical properties and pineapple (Smooth cayenne) yield

Abstract

Abstract This field experiment was conducted in Chichu Kebele in the Dilla Zuria area from 2020 to 2023. The objective of the experiment was to determine the optimal mulching strategy for enhancing soil fertility and pineapple production by comparing three treatments (grass mulch, plastic mulch, and farmers’ practices without any mulch) using a RCB (Randomized Complete Block) design. The study’s findings showed that the treatments with plastic mulch had the greatest soil moisture content values (18.41%), while the treatments with no mulch had the lowest values (11.39%). Compared to mulched treatments, pineapple planted without mulch had the greatest bulk density values (1.43 g/cm3). Total nitrogen and organic carbon has increase by 34 and 25%, respectively due to plastic mulching. However, total nitrogen and organic carbon has increase by 43 and 37.5%, respectively due to grass mulching. Fruit length was larger by 42.7 and 33.2%, respectively due to plastic and grass mulch compared to the control. However, fruit girth was wider by 54.1 and 43.8%, respectively due to plastic and grass mulches compared to the control. The pineapple with the most fruit yield (71.39 t/ha), fruit length (17.4 cm), fruit girth (46.67 cm), and sucker number (15 pieces) was obtained using plastic mulching. However, pineapple grown without mulch had the lowest yield ever noted. Plastic mulch outperformed farmers’ practices and grass mulching in terms of conserving soil moisture, which increased yield and yield characteristics. For the baseline, the marginal rate of return generated by the plastic and grass mulch treatments was 118.5 and 93.65%, respectively. Thus, the study’s best recommendation for improving soils and achieving a high pineapple fruit yield is to grow pineapples using plastic mulch.

Abstract

Background. Our previous studies have shown a minor embryotoxic effect of polymeric poly(VEP-co-GMA)-graft-mPEG carrier on Missgurnus fossilis L. embryos and prelarvae. At the same time, it was found that a 3-day exposure to 10-15 M polymer carrier slowed developing, which is characterized by a delayed hatching of larvae. However, in the 10-day experiment on loach larvae exposed to polymeric carrier, anomalies and defects of development have not been identified. The aim of this work was to analyze the embryos and prelarvae survival, as well as determine the morphometric indicators of the loach embryos under the action of a PEG-modified polymer carrier. Materials and Methods. Ovulation in loach females (Misgurnus fossilis L.) was stimulated by intramuscular injection of female chorionic gonadotropin (500 units), eggs were obtained 36 h after stimulation, fertilized in Petri dishes with a suspension of sperm according to A. A. Neifach. The stages of development were observed visually under a binocular microscope MBS-9 with a photo camera in a real-time mode. The experimental embryos were incubated in Goltfreter’s solution with the addition of PEG-containing carrier to a final concentration of 10 and 100 μmol/L. The morphological development of the embryo groups was evaluated according to the T. Fujimoto deve­lopment tables (2004), and the morphological parameters (diameter and area of roes, blastomers, embryos, embryo sac and blastodisk) were measured using ImageJ and Photoshop (CC 2014v15) programs. Results. Addition of the 10 μmol/L PEG-containing carrier to the medium initiated significant positive changes in the survival of loach embryos and prelarvae, in contrast to exposure to 100 μmol/L carrier. A significant increase in the area and diameter of blastomers and the embryos themselves under the influence of 100 μmol/L PEG carrier was established, which may indicate swelling of the embryos and a disruption of water-salt exchange that causes the early death of embryos. Conclusions. (1) Low embryotoxicity of the PEG-polymer was confirmed on the studied model of the loach embryos. Based on the obtained data and the original data of J. Maes et al. (2) PEG is an attractive polymeric carrier for the delivery of a variety of compounds to both embryos and prelarvae as well as other model subjects. Despite the fact that we investigated only two concentrations of the PEG-containing carrier, it is quite likely that these concentrations of the carrier are (3) biologically active in themselves and, therefore, a thorough selection of the PEG-carrier concentration for each objective of the model is needed.

Abstract

Abstract Background Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare peritoneal mucinous carcinomatosis with largely unknown underlying molecular mechanisms. Cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy is the only therapeutic option; however, despite its use, recurrence with a fatal outcome is common. The lack of molecular characterisation of PMP and other mucinous tumours is mainly due to the physicochemical properties of mucin. Results This manuscript describes the first protocol capable of breaking the mucin barrier and isolating proteins from mucinous tumours. Briefly, mucinous tumour samples were homogenised and subjected to liquid chromatography using two specific columns to reduce mainly glycoproteins, albumins and immunoglobulin G. The protein fractions were then subjected to mass spectrometry analysis and the proteomic profile obtained was analysed using various bioinformatic tools. Thus, we present here the first proteome analysed in PMP and identified a distinct mucin isoform profile in soft compared to hard mucin tumour tissues as well as key biological processes/pathways altered in mucinous tumours. Importantly, this protocol also allowed us to identify MUC13 as a potential tumour cell marker in PMP. Conclusions In sum, our results demonstrate that this protein isolation protocol from mucin will have a high impact, allowing the oncology research community to more rapidly advance in the knowledge of PMP and other mucinous neoplasms, as well as develop new and effective therapeutic strategies.

21. The arithmetic topology of genetic alignments

Abstract

We propose a novel mathematical paradigm for the study of genetic variation in sequence alignments. This framework originates from extending the notion of pairwise relations, upon which current analysis is based on, to k-ary dissimilarity. This dissimilarity naturally leads to a generalization of simplicial complexes by endowing simplices with weights, compatible with the boundary operator. We introduce the notion of k-stances and dissimilarity complex, the former encapsulating arithmetic as well as topological structure expressing these k-ary relations. We study basic mathematical properties of dissimilarity complexes and show how this approach captures an entirely new layer of biologically relevant viral dynamics in the context of SARS-CoV-2 and H1N1 flu genomic data.

Abstract

We provide a bottom up construction of torsion generators for weighted homology of a weighted complex over a discrete valuation ring $R=\mathbb{F}[[\pi]]$. This is achieved by starting from a basis for classical homology of the $n$-th skeleton for the underlying complex with coefficients in the residue field $\mathbb{F}$ and then lifting it to a basis for the weighted homology with coefficients in the ring $R$. Using the latter, a bijection is established between $n+1$ and $n$ dimensional simplices whose weight ratios provide the exponents of the $\pi$-monomials that generate each torsion summand in the structure theorem of the weighted homology modules over $R$. We present algorithms that subsume the torsion computation by reducing it to normalization over the residue field of $R$, and describe a Python package we implemented that takes advantage of this reduction and performs the computation efficiently., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We present an algorithmic approach to estimate the value distributions of random variables of probabilistic loops whose statistical moments are (partially) known. Based on these moments, we apply two statistical methods, Maximum Entropy and Gram-Charlier series, to estimate the distributions of the loop's random variables. We measure the accuracy of our distribution estimation by comparing the resulting distributions using exact and estimated moments of the probabilistic loop, and performing statistical tests. We evaluate our method on several probabilistic loops with polynomial updates over random variables drawing from common probability distributions, including examples implementing financial and biological models. For this, we leverage symbolic approaches to compute exact higher-order moments of loops as well as use sampling-based techniques to estimate moments from loop executions. Our experimental results provide practical evidence of the accuracy of our method for estimating distributions of probabilistic loop outputs.

Our approach leverages polynomial chaos expansion to approximate non-linear functional updates as sums of orthogonal polynomials. We exploit this result to automatically estimate state-variable moments of all orders in Prob-solvable loops with non-polynomial updates. Abstract

Summary: Background: The clinical relevance of recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) after discontinuing anticoagulation in patients with COVID-19-associated VTE remains uncertain. We estimated the incidence rates and mortality of VTE recurrences developing after discontinuing anticoagulation in patients with COVID-19-associated VTE. Methods: A prospective, multicenter, non-interventional study was conducted between March 25, 2020, and July 26, 2023, including patients who had discontinued anticoagulation after at least 3 months of therapy. All patients from the registry were analyzed during the study period to verify inclusion criteria. Patients with superficial vein thrombosis, those who did not receive at least 3 months of anticoagulant therapy, and those who were followed for less than 15 days after discontinuing anticoagulation were excluded. Outcomes were: 1) Incidence rates of symptomatic VTE recurrences, and 2) fatal PE. The rate of VTE recurrences was defined as the number of patients with recurrent VTE divided by the patient-years at risk of recurrent VTE during the period when anticoagulation was discontinued. Findings: Among 1106 patients with COVID-19-associated VTE (age 62.3 ± 14.4 years; 62.9% male) followed-up for 12.5 months (p25-75, 6.3–20.1) after discontinuing anticoagulation, there were 38 VTE recurrences (3.5%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.5–4.7%), with a rate of 3.1 per 100 patient-years (95% CI: 2.2–4.2). No patient died of recurrent PE (0%, 95% CI: 0–7.6%). Subgroup analyses showed that patients with diagnosis in 2021–2022 (vs. 2020) (Hazard ratio [HR] 2.86; 95% CI 1.45–5.68) or those with isolated deep vein thrombosis (vs. pulmonary embolism) (HR 2.31; 95% CI 1.19–4.49) had significantly higher rates of VTE recurrences. Interpretation: In patients with COVID-19-associated VTE who discontinued anticoagulation after at least 3 months of treatment, the incidence rate of recurrent VTE and the case-fatality rate was low. Therefore, it conceivable that long-term anticoagulation may not be required for many patients with COVID-19-associated VTE, although further research is needed to confirm these findings. Abstract

Abstract Lymphedema (LD) is characterized by the accumulation of interstitial fluid, lipids and inflammatory cell infiltrate in the limb. Here, we find that LD tissues from women who developed LD after breast cancer exhibit an inflamed gene expression profile. Lipidomic analysis reveals decrease in specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPM) generated by the 15-lipoxygenase (15-LO) in LD. In mice, the loss of SPM is associated with an increase in apoptotic regulatory T (Treg) cell number. In addition, the selective depletion of 15-LO in the lymphatic endothelium induces an aggravation of LD that can be rescued by Treg cell adoptive transfer or ALOX15-expressing lentivector injections. Mechanistically, exogenous injections of the pro-resolving cytokine IFN−β restores both 15-LO expression and Treg cell number in a mouse model of LD. These results provide evidence that lymphatic 15-LO may represent a therapeutic target for LD by serving as a mediator of Treg cell populations to resolve inflammation.

Abstract

Abstract Secondary lymphedema (LD) corresponds to a severe lymphatic dysfunction leading to the accumulation of fluid and fibrotic adipose tissue in a limb. Here, we identified apelin (APLN) as a powerful molecule for regenerating lymphatic function in LD. We identified the loss of APLN expression in the lymphedematous arm compared to the normal arm in patients. The role of APLN in LD was confirmed in APLN knockout mice, in which LD is increased and associated with fibrosis and dermal backflow. This was reversed by intradermal injection of APLN-lentivectors. Mechanistically, APLN stimulates lymphatic endothelial cell gene expression and induces the binding of E2F8 transcription factor to the promoter of CCBE1 that controls VEGF-C processing. In addition, APLN induces Akt and eNOS pathways to stimulate lymphatic collector pumping. Our results show that APLN represents a novel partner for VEGF-C to restore lymphatic function in both initial and collecting vessels. As LD appears after cancer treatment, we validated the APLN-VEGF-C combination using a novel class of nonintegrative RNA delivery LentiFlash® vector that will be evaluated for phase I/IIa clinical trial.

In Indonesia, there is a rich diversity of cultures, one of which is traditional houses. Traditional houses essentially have the potential to represent the way of life, culture, and local economy. Traditional houses in Indonesia, particularly in the Malaka region, are important cultural symbols that can be regarded as cultural icons in Malaka and Indonesia. They provide a historical perspective, heritage, and reflect the progress of society in a civilization. The Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) method is used in this research. These traditional house objects are divided into two categories: Kolibein Traditional House and Laleik Traditional House. The objective of this research is to classify traditional houses in Malaka, namely Kolibein Traditional House and Laleik Traditional House, and also to determine the accuracy level of CNN classification results. The previously created model is tested using test data to assess its accuracy. The testing is conducted on 20 data points, with 10 data points in each respective class. The testing results show that the classification of Kolibein and Laleik traditional houses is error- free or very accurate. Based on the model developed for classifying Kolibein and Laleik traditional houses using the Convolutional Neural Network method, it is evident that this method is capable of producing accurate results. The obtained results indicate that the accuracy, based on the classification report using images of Kolibein and Laleik traditional houses, reaches 100%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the constructed CNN model has a high level of accuracy.

Abstract

Practicing customs and rituals is a very important element that unites the Sorbs, as well as an exponent of the national identity of this Slavic minority in Germany. Attachment to tradition and customs is also reflected in the language. The collected linguistic material (nearly 80 Upper Sorbian idioms and proverbs) illustrates many interesting Sorbian customs. It reflects mainly those traditions and customs that are closely related to faith, such as some Easter customs or the tradition of indulgence feasts/parish festival.

Abstract

The paper examines a roundabout located in a residential district of Lviv city. The area has many attraction points, so traffic and pedestrian flow volumes are large. All approaches to the roundabout have unsignalized pedestrian crosswalks, three of which lack safety islands. Field studies were conducted on peak and off-peak periods, collecting primary indicators of traffic and pedestrian flows. Traffic flow delays were determined on the approaches to the roundabout under existing traffic conditions with the help of the PTV VISSIM software. Three options were proposed for arranging pedestrian crosswalks on approaches to the roundabout. The first option was an arrangement of safety islands on all pedestrian crosswalks. The second option was an arrangement of underground pedestrian crosswalks. The third option was the implementation of adapting traffic light control with a call button for pedestrians. Traffic simulation was carried out for all three proposed options with the finding of the delay per vehicle and the values of the average and maximum length of the queue of vehicles on the approaches to the roundabout. All three options showed better results of traffic delay than existing conditions. However, there were delays caused by the traffic flow itself. These delays are seen in the results of the simulation of option two. Traffic delays are the smallest at this option. Option one showed the highest values of traffic delays in comparison with the other two options. The advantages and disadvantages of each option for arranging pedestrian crosswalks are determined. Recommendations are given regarding the feasibility of locating various types of pedestrian crosswalks on the approaches to the roundabout. Given the research results, the best option from the view of traffic and pedestrian flows, their delays and safety is the third one.

Abstract Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare disease characterized by a massive accumulation of mucus in the peritoneal cavity. The only effective treatment is aggressive surgery, aimed at removing all visible tumors. However, a high percentage of patients relapse, with subsequent progression and death. Recently, there has been an increase in therapies that target mutated oncogenic proteins. In this sense, KRAS has been reported to be highly mutated in PMP, with KRASG12D being the most common subtype. Here, we tested the efficacy of a small-molecule KRASG12D inhibitor, MRTX1133, in a high-grade PMP xenograft mouse model carrying a KRASG12D mutation. The results obtained in this work showed a profound inhibition of tumor growth, which was associated with a reduction in cell proliferation, an increase in apoptosis, and a reduction in the MAPK and PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathways. In conclusion, these results demonstrate the high potency and efficacy of MRTX1133 in KRASG12D-PMP tumors and provide a rationale for clinical trials.

Abstract

Abstract Purpose To determine if pelvic/ovarian and omental lesions of ovarian cancer can be reliably segmented on computed tomography (CT) using fully automated deep learning-based methods. Methods A deep learning model for the two most common disease sites of high-grade serous ovarian cancer lesions (pelvis/ovaries and omentum) was developed and compared against the well-established “no-new-Net” framework and unrevised trainee radiologist segmentations. A total of 451 CT scans collected from four different institutions were used for training (n = 276), evaluation (n = 104) and testing (n = 71) of the methods. The performance was evaluated using the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and compared using a Wilcoxon test. Results Our model outperformed no-new-Net for the pelvic/ovarian lesions in cross-validation, on the evaluation and test set by a significant margin (p values being 4 × 10–7, 3 × 10–4, 4 × 10–2, respectively), and for the omental lesions on the evaluation set (p = 1 × 10–3). Our model did not perform significantly differently in segmenting pelvic/ovarian lesions (p = 0.371) compared to a trainee radiologist. On an independent test set, the model achieved a DSC performance of 71 ± 20 (mean ± standard deviation) for pelvic/ovarian and 61 ± 24 for omental lesions. Conclusion Automated ovarian cancer segmentation on CT scans using deep neural networks is feasible and achieves performance close to a trainee-level radiologist for pelvic/ovarian lesions. Relevance statement Automated segmentation of ovarian cancer may be used by clinicians for CT-based volumetric assessments and researchers for building complex analysis pipelines. Key points • The first automated approach for pelvic/ovarian and omental ovarian cancer lesion segmentation on CT images has been presented. • Automated segmentation of ovarian cancer lesions can be comparable with manual segmentation of trainee radiologists. • Careful hyperparameter tuning can provide models significantly outperforming strong state-of-the-art baselines. Abstract Introduction: The skin is of all the organs of the body that is directly and constantly exposed to external agents. Hence the importance of providing all the necessary nutrients to keep it healthy, cared for and hydrated. When this does not happen, the skin begins to lose water, becomes dehydrated, and can be seriously injured. With this intention, a moisturizing serum with natural active ingredients has been designed and developed. It has been developed and characterized through various studies. In addition, it includes a strain of the probiotic species Lactobacillus fermentum CECT 5716, as an innovation, to enhance the synergistic effect of the product. Method: The cited product is characterized by pH, conductivity, and viscosity measurements to test its stability. Besides it is studied to probiotic viability and consumers’ perception of the product’s efficacy. Results: Data extracted from pH and conductivity measurements assure that the topical application of our serum is safe, as it does the consumers’ perception of the product’s efficacy study, offering it a better appearance in terms of smoothness and luminosity. This research has revealed the serum’s pseudoplastic characteristics, optimal for its purpose. Lastly, it has been seen that probiotic viability decreases with time. Conclusions: Based on the results we obtained; it can be affirmed that our moisturizing serum is safe and effective in skin hydration, due to the properties of the raw materials incorporated and the competitive mechanism of the probiotics included.

Abstract

Safe reinforcement learning is extremely challenging--not only must the agent explore an unknown environment, it must do so while ensuring no safety constraint violations. We formulate this safe reinforcement learning (RL) problem using the framework of a finite-horizon Constrained Markov Decision Process (CMDP) with an unknown transition probability function, where we model the safety requirements as constraints on the expected cumulative costs that must be satisfied during all episodes of learning. We propose a model-based safe RL algorithm that we call Doubly Optimistic and Pessimistic Exploration (DOPE), and show that it achieves an objective regret $\tilde{O}(|\mathcal{S}|\sqrt{|\mathcal{A}| K})$ without violating the safety constraints during learning, where $|\mathcal{S}|$ is the number of states, $|\mathcal{A}|$ is the number of actions, and $K$ is the number of learning episodes. Our key idea is to combine a reward bonus for exploration (optimism) with a conservative constraint (pessimism), in addition to the standard optimistic model-based exploration. Abstract

The Government of India, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), established the National Polio Surveillance Project (NPSP) in 1997 and initiated acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance to achieve the goal of polio eradication. The WHO South-East Asia Region, comprising of 11 countries, including India, was certified as polio-free in March 2014. India was also validated to have eliminated maternal and neonatal tetanus in May 2015. Over the years, the surveillance of other vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) was integrated with AFP surveillance in the country. Outbreak-based measles–rubella (MR) surveillance was initiated in 2005 using AFP surveillance as a platform, case-based fever–rash (FR) surveillance started in 2021 as one of the strategies to achieve measles and rubella elimination in the country. The surveillance of diphtheria, pertussis, and neonatal tetanus was integrated with AFP surveillance in a phased manner during 2015–2022. The surveillance system for VPDs in India, supported by a laboratory network of 10 polio laboratories, 28 measles–rubella laboratories, and 20 diphtheria–pertussis laboratories, has enhanced the national health capacity and security. The setting up and expansion of the surveillance system in the country involved the important component of capacity building of personnel on various components of surveillance, including case identification, case investigation, sample collection and shipment, data analysis and public health response. These capacities have been used effectively during other emergencies, such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic, as well as during outbreaks of other diseases and natural calamities.

Abstract

Most data sets comprise of measurements on continuous and categorical variables. In regression and classification Statistics literature, modeling high-dimensional mixed predictors has received limited attention. In this paper we study the general regression problem of inferring on a variable of interest based on high dimensional mixed continuous and binary predictors. The aim is to find a lower dimensional function of the mixed predictor vector that contains all the modeling information in the mixed predictors for the response, which can be either continuous or categorical. The approach we propose identifies sufficient reductions by reversing the regression and modeling the mixed predictors conditional on the response. We derive the maximum likelihood estimator of the sufficient reductions, asymptotic tests for dimension, and a regularized estimator, which simultaneously achieves variable (feature) selection and dimension reduction (feature extraction). We study the performance of the proposed method and compare it with other approaches through simulations and real data examples.
