Abstract

Varnish layers are optical coatings that act as physico‐chemical barrier between the historical paint layers and the environment. Understanding how varnish materials protect historical paintings over time and in the presence of humidity or organic vapors is of central importance for art preservation. However, probing the behavior of varnish after aging in real conditions remains a challenge. Here the question is addressed by "reshaping" the varnish material from the masterpiece of G. Bellini, the "Transfiguration", into an optical layer; coupling in situ Ultraviolet‐Visible (UV–vis) and Infrared (IR) ellipsometries, the chemical state is correlated, optical properties and swelling of the varnish in presence of water and organic vapors. It shows that the varnish material aged since the 1950s still exhibits effective water repellence. The methodology may be applied to other relevant historical systems beyond paintings and may help in establishing more efficient preservation strategies for historical artworks. Abstract

Ce recueil de textes offre un vaste nuancier de micro-lectures sur l’Orient des femmes : non seulement sur les femmes d’Orient, mais aussi sur les femmes en Orient, les femmes et l’Orient. En explorant des domaines aussi divers que l’histoire de l’art, l’histoire des sciences, la littérature classique, la littérature de voyage, l’anthropologie, les sciences politiques et la psychanalyse, ces études apportent l’éclairage de prismes différents, voire divergents, sur une réalité par essence plurielle. 26. Optical-Quality Thin Films with Tunable Thickness from Stable Colloidal Suspensions of Lanthanide Oxysulfide Nanoplates

Abstract

In modern laser technologies, there is a need for coatings that would be compatible with flexible substrates while retaining the advantages of inorganic compounds in terms of robustness. As a first step in this direction, we developed here thin films of lanthanide oxysulfide, of optical quality, prepared by low-temperature dip coating. As a model compound in the family of oxysulfides, (Gd,Ce)2O2S anisotropic nanoplates were used. The films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and in situUV and IR spectroscopic ellipsometry, showing that the band gap of the materials was preserved through the deposition process. The thickness of the films was tuned in a broad range, from a few nanometers to 150 nm, using different concentrations of the colloidal suspensions as well as single-layer and multilayer deposition. Lastly, thermal treatment of the thin films was optimized to remove the stabilizing organic ligands of the nanoparticles while preserving their integrity, as confirmed by SEM and XRD.

28. Solvent-free Preparation of Ru/Al2O3Catalysts for CO2Methanation: An Example of Frugal Innovation

Abstract

To reduce the environmental impact of supported catalyst production in compliance with the recommendations of the UN’s 12th objective, which encourages more sustainable consumption and production patterns, we propose to revisit sol–gel chemistry in a more frugal mode. The principle of frugal innovation is to simplify products and processes, eliminate complexities to make solutions easier to understand and use, and reduce production costs. By this way, the synthesis of ruthenium-based catalysts supported on γ-AlOOH and γ-Al2O3is revised via solvent-free sol–gel chemistry. Such catalysts are successfully prepared in one-pot preparation of the active phase and the support using Ru(acac)3/Al alkoxide that requires no sacrificial organic pore-generating agent, no washing, and no filtration and produces no liquid waste. The mixed Ru/Al precursor is hydrolyzed with a stoichiometric amount of water without any solvent. The obtained materials containing 1 and 3% Ru/Al molar ratios have high specific surface areas, from 300 to 690 m2·g–1and exhibit well dispersed NPs of 1–4 nm on γ-AlOOH with interesting CO2methanation activity and 100% CH4selectivity. This proves that a frugal synthesis approach can do as well as traditional synthesis methods while having a much lower environmental impact (cE-factor, water consumption, and energy consumption are 24, 69, and 24 to 42 times lower, respectively) than the standard multistep protocol..
