This article presents the results of the numerical simulations of a dynamic experimental campaign on the shaking table. The specimen is a full-scale masonry cross vault without and with the textile-reinforced mortar used as a strengthening solution. The specimen was tested in the scope of the European project SERA.ta 07 "Seismic Response of Masonry Cross Vaults: Shaking table tests and numerical validations". The specimen replicates a generic cross-section of a central bay located in the lateral nave of a three-nave church, where the recurrent in-plane shear mechanism is induced. Finite element model (FEM) and discrete element model (DEM) were built and calibrated based on the experimental frequencies and mode shapes. Then, a unidirectional seismic action was applied to the numerical model in order to develop shear damage in the shell of the vault. This article presents the results of the LNEC-3D shaking table tests on a full-scale masonry cross vault without and with the textile reinforced mortar used as strengthening solution. The specimen has been tested in the scope of the European project SERA. TA 07 "Seismic Response of Masonry Cross Vaults: Shaking table tests and numerical validations". The specimen replicates a generic cross-section of a central bay located in a lateral nave of a three-nave church, derived from the intersection of two semi-circular barrel vaults with low rise. It is representative of a generic monumental church in Central Italy, generated by a squared base groin vault with a net span of 3.13 m and 1.13 m rise at full scale. A unidirectional seismic action is applied to develop shear damage in the shell of the vault. A detailed description of the two tests and the conclusions are presented. Preservation of cultural heritage sites is of paramount importance. The ruins of Carmo Convent in Lisbon stand as a poignant reminder of the city's rich history, but challenges regarding structural integrity and safety are present in a highly populated and touristic area. In this paper, a comprehensive study of the Carmo Convent is presented, focused on non-destructive testing (NDT), structural health monitoring (SHM) and numerical modelling. Given its state of ruin and historical relevance, the study relied heavily on NDT. Additionally, a metro line passing underneath the convent raised concerns regarding potential hazards from induced vibrations. Thus, metro vibration monitoring (MVM) was implemented to assess the impact of induced vibrations on the structure. One of the challenges was the scarcity of standards specific to historic structures. However, through a combination of finite element method (FEM) and discrete element method (DEM) numerical modelling, valuable insights into the current condition of the structure were obtained. MVM revealed that the maximum velocity induced by metro activities remained within safe limits, indicating minimal impact. These results not only provide crucial information on structural preservation but also empower stakeholders to make informed decisions regarding the implementation of protective measures. The article discusses a Blind Test Competition focused on predicting the behavior of historical groin vaults under seismic conditions. Thirteen groups from around the world participated, showcasing a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical expertise. The competition revealed that simple models based on fundamental principles can provide accurate predictions, highlighting the importance of understanding material mechanics in seismic simulation for historical structures. Additionally, while predicting damage mechanisms and accelerations was relatively straightforward, accurately predicting displacements proved to be more challenging, emphasizing the need for further refinement in displacement-based verification methods in structural engineering.
