1. State surveillance in the digital age: Factors associated with citizens' attitudes towards trust registers

Abstract

This paper investigates factors related to the acceptance of trust registers (e.g., the Chinese Social Credit System - SCS) in Western settings. To avoid a negative connotation, we first define the concept of trust register which encompasses surveillance systems in other settings beyond China, such as FICO in the US. Then, we explore which factors are associated with people's attitude towards trust registers leaning on the technology acceptance and privacy concern theories. A cross-sectional survey among Slovenian Facebook and Instagram users (N=147) was conducted. Covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) was used to test the hypothesized associations between the studied constructs. Results indicate that attitude towards trust register is directly associated with perceived general usefulness of the trust register. Additionally, perceived general usefulness is associated with perceived usefulness of the trust register for ensuring national security and fighting crime, its ease of use, and privacy concern regarding data collection. As one of the first studies investigating attitude towards trust registers in a Western country, it provides pioneering insights into factors that may be relevant in case such registers would be implemented in a Western context, and provides some practical implications regarding messaging for would-be implementers of such systems.

2. Cybersecurity competence of older adult users of mobile devices

Abstract

This work reports on a cross-sectional study on device proficiency, support availability and cybersecurity competence of older adult users of smartphones and/or tablets. Results indicate that cybersecurity competence is associated with both device proficiency and support availability although the variance explained is relatively low. There were no differences in cybersecurity competence between users and non-users of either mobile devices. Users of both smartphones and tablets had significantly higher device proficiency than non-users. Users of tablets had significantly higher support availability than non-users while there were no significant differences between users and non-users of smartphones.

Abstract

Cybersecurity attacks have increased in recent years, both on the EU and global levels, in terms of their number and impact. The public administration sector is particularly at risk, as this is where most cybersecurity attacks take place. It is therefore important to develop comprehensive information security strategies on both the organizational and national level. Strategies help to set up a relatively long-term focus and priorities. The aim of our study is to understand how the EU member countries deal with such challenges. To achieve this, we analyze three indices: the level of penetration (PL), level of digitalization (DL), and global cybersecurity index (GCI). We examine individual national strategies to provide a basis for a comparative analysis which can serve as a reference for improving the long-term cybersecurity in the public administration. 9. Teaching Social Science Aspects of Information Security.

Abstract

As information security has become increasingly crucial in our daily lives, there is a growing need to teach its social science aspects. This paper explores the challenges and best practices for teaching social science aspects of information security. It begins with the importance of information security and cyberspace and highlights the human aspects of information security. Next, it discusses the role of social science in understanding information security and how social science can help us better design and implement security measures. The paper identifies challenges in teaching social science aspects of information security, such as the interdisciplinary nature of the subject and the need for a standardised curriculum. Finally, the paper outlines best practices for teaching social science aspects of information security, such as using case studies and real-world examples, incorporating interactive and experiential learning, and leveraging existing resources. Abstract

This study explores factors affecting tablet adoption among older adults in Slovenia. Findings highlight significant differences across three adoption groups: those without a tablet, with an unused tablet, and active users. Perceived usefulness and existing knowledge greatly influence adoption intention, while cybersecurity concerns and anxiety contribute to usage fear and potential benefits' rejection. As these concerns are universal across all adoption stages, strategies addressing cybersecurity, including clear cyber safety information, online safety training, and accessible cybersecurity infrastructure, are essential for promoting tablet use among older adults. 13. Characterization of Selected Security-related Standards in the Field of Security Requirements Engineering.

Abstract

Security requirements are an important part of modern information systems. In the past, they have been implemented in final stages of the information systems development. Though, there are many approaches and publications in the field of security requirements engineering, there is a gap in how to find the most relevant sources. To this end, we present a novel approach to discover knowledge from academic databases. It enables a qualitative and quantitative analysis of scientific publications in the field of security requirements engineering. A special attention is paid to standards in the field of information security and other knowledge bases that create an added value in understanding the security requirements engineering. The VOSviewer software for keyword analysis in scientific publications in the academic database Web of Science Core Collection (a total of 319 scientific publications analyzed) is used. As part of this, two visualizations of clustering (a solution with five and two clusters) are highlighted. The results show that the most popular standards and methodologies in the field of information security are family of the ISO/IEC standards 27000, NIST 800-53 and Tropos.
