Ensuring sea surface tranquility within port basins is of paramount importance for safe and efficient port operations and vessels' accommodation. The present study aims to introduce a robust numerical model based on mild-slope equations, capable of accurately simulating wave disturbance and resonance in ports. The model is further enhanced by the integration of an artificial neural network (ANN) to address partial reflection, and its efficiency is optimized by developing a parallel algorithm based on OpenMP, allowing for a reduction in the required simulation times for real port areas spanning several kilometers horizontally. Numerous numerical experiments focusing on wave reflection against a vertical wall were conducted to develop the ANN. This neural network was designed to determine the appropriate value of the eddy viscosity coefficient, a crucial parameter in the momentum equation of the mild-slope model, tailored to incident wave characteristics. The model's validity was confirmed through rigorous validation against experimental measurements, covering wave disturbance, rectangular harbor resonance, and Bragg resonance. The model consistently demonstrated a more than satisfactory performance across all considered scenarios. In a practical application, the model was deployed in the Port of Rethymno, Crete Island, Greece, effectively capturing and describing dominant phenomena within the port area. The implementation of a parallel algorithm significantly reduced the simulation times by ~92%, compared to the serial algorithm, thereby enhancing the model's efficiency and applicability in real-world port environments. Remarkable advancements have been made in wave energy converters, notably the innovative WaveSAX technology—an oscillating water column system conceptually designed for coastal structures. Proven effective in existing installations, particularly at Civitavecchia Port, Italy, where the WaveSAX-1 prototype was tested in 2018 and the WaveSAX-2 was updated in 2021. The device's power generation capacity was evaluated using a Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) model that simulated 30 years of wave conditions. Validation with radar and Acoustic Doppler Profiler instruments showed excellent performance in wave height simulation. Results revealed higher wave power generation near the harbor breakwater, surpassing offshore levels, especially in central and northern sections. WaveSAX-2, featuring an improved Wells turbine, demonstrated a remarkable 37% increase in average efficiency compared to WaveSAX-1. If a linear WaveSAX array were installed, it could produce 4 GWh annually, satisfying 20% of the port's energy needs and reducing around 2800 tCO2e/year. Doubling arrays and incorporating triangular modules could significantly enhance sustainability for port operations, offering a promising path toward self-sufficiency and environmental responsibility. In recent decades, the world's population is progressively shifting towards coastal areas, and it is estimated that it could reach 1 billion by 2050. On the other hand, meteocean forcings show increasing modification in terms of the occurrence and frequency of energetic events related to climate change trends. Then, the definition of adaptation strategies is crucial to managing coastal areas, especially in the most densely populated or highly valued tourist and environmental areas. Meaningful long-term strategies should then be based on quantitative estimation of future scenarios in a changing climate. Although most of the studies in the literature focus on extreme events, this paper aims to assess, through synthetic indicators, whether and how average and mild energy conditions related to wave climate will vary considering the current situation compared to future projections. The study is based on the analysis of wave data. The projection of average and mild energy conditions can indeed influence, just for example, the long-term morphodynamics of sandy beaches and the quality of bathing waters. Data extracted from the Copernicus database are considered. The methodology has been applied to the case of Sardinia island at a regional scale. Then, the aim of this paper is twofold: on the one hand, a method is proposed to evaluate the variation of average and mild wave conditions; on the other hand, it aims to apply the method to the case study of the Sardinia coastal area to highlight its feasibility. Results confirm that variations are expected. In the analyzed case study, it emerges that, on average, the long-term evolution of the wave climate shows a tendency toward intensification, while a decrease in the frequency of calm conditions is estimated. The average annual number of events undergoes an increase. Moreover, changes in wave directional sectors are observed, which, from being unimodal, are estimated to exhibit bimodal characteristics in particular on the west coast of the island. In 1783, an event that has gone down in history as the great seismic crisis in Calabria began, during which two major earthquakes occurred, affecting the Calabrian ridge from the Strait to the north. Between 6 and 7 February in Scilla a tsunami occurred that caused the greatest number of victims in Italy: 1500 people. The mechanism that triggered the tsunami was the detachment of a ridge of rock due to a violent earthquake that affected the area; this detachment caused a subaerial landslide which, by sliding, then deposited the rock on the seabed a few kilometers from the coast, immediately generating the tsunami event. The objective of this study is to perform numerical simulations for tsunami events that occurred in history and use models that perform the propagation of a tsunami, using the best possible bathymetric and topographic data and the historical data to compare the validity of the results. In this way, one can obtain the validation of a model that can be used to simulate possible events of this magnitude on the Calabrian coasts and therefore be able to develop a reliable early warning tsunami system; it also has the advantage of perfectly combining computational burdens and the validity of results. Sea wave reflection from coastal protection structures is one of the main issues in the coastal design process. Several empirical formulas have been proposed so far to predict reflection coefficient from rubble mound breakwaters and smooth slopes. The aim of this study is to investigate wave reflection from a rubble mound structure placed in front of a vertical concrete seawall. Several experimental tests were performed on a two-dimensional wave flume by reproducing on a rubble mound structure with a steep single primary layer armored with a novel artificial unit. A new approach for the prediction of the reflection coefficient based on dimensional analysis is also proposed, and a new empirical equation is derived.
