Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is the cause of bovine viral diarrhea disease, one of the most economically important livestock diseases worldwide. The majority of BVD disease control programs rely on the detection and then elimination of persistent infection (PI) cattle, as the continuing source of disease. The main purpose of this study was to design and develop an accurate G-quadruplex-based aptasensor for rapid and simple detection of BVDV-1. In this work, we utilized in silico techniques to design a G-quadruplex aptamer specific for the detection of BVDV-1. Also, the rationally designed aptamer was validated experimentally and was used for developing a colorimetric biosensor based on an aptamer-gold nanoparticle system. Firstly, a pool of G-quadruplex forming ssDNA sequences was constructed. Then, based on the stability score in secondary and tertiary structures and molecular docking score, an aptamer (Apt31) was selected. In the experimental part, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with an average particle size of 31.7 nm were synthesized and electrostatically linked with the Apt31. The colorimetric test showed that salt-induced color change of AuNPs from red to purple-blue occurs only in the presence of BVDV-Apt31 complex, after 20 min. These results approved the specificity of Apt31 for BVDV. Furthermore, our biosensor could detect the virus at as low as 0.27 copies/ml, which is an acceptable value in comparison to the qPCR method. The specificity of the aptasensor was confirmed through cross-reactivity testing, while its selectivity was confirmed through plasma testing. The sample analysis showed 90% precision and 94% accuracy. It was concluded that the biosensor was adequately sensitive and specific for the detection of BVDV in plasma samples and could be used as a simple and rapid method on the farm. The development of a cancer vaccine has become an essential focus in the field of medical biotechnology and immunology. In our study, the NY-SAR-35 cancer/testis antigen was targeted to design a novel peptide vaccine using bioinformatics tools, and BALB/c mice were used to evaluate the vaccine's immunological function. This evaluation involved assessing peptide-specific IgG levels in the serum via ELISA and measuring the levels of IFN-γ, IL-4, and granzyme B in the supernatant of cultured splenocytes. The final vaccine construct consisted of two T lymphocyte epitopes linked by the AAY linker. This construct displayed high antigenicity, non-allergenicity, non-toxicity, stability, and ability to induce IFN-γ and IL-4. It showed stable dynamics with both human MHC-I and II molecules, as well as mouse MHC-II molecules, and revealed strong Van der Waals and electrostatic energies. Emulsifying our peptide vaccine in incomplete Freund's adjuvant resulted in a remarkable increase in the levels of IgG. The splenocytes of mice that received the combination of peptide and adjuvant displayed a noteworthy increase in IFN-γ, IL-4, and granzyme B secretion. Additionally, their lymphocytes exhibited higher proliferation rates compared to the control group. Our data demonstrated that our vaccine could stimulate a robust immune response, making it a promising candidate for cancer prevention. More than 70% of hospital‐acquired urinary tract infections are related to urinary catheters, which are commonly used for the treatment of about 20% of hospitalized patients. Urinary catheters are used to drain the bladder if there is an obstruction in the tube that carries urine out of the bladder (urethra). During catheter‐associated urinary tract infections, microorganisms rise up in the urinary tract and reach the bladder, and cause infections. Various materials are used to fabricate urinary catheters such as silicone, polyurethane, and latex. These materials allow bacteria and fungi to develop colonies on their inner and outer surfaces, leading to bacteriuria or other infections. Urinary catheters could be modified to exert antibacterial and antifungal effects. Although so many research have been conducted over the past years on the fabrication of antibacterial and antifouling catheters, an ideal catheter needs to be developed for long‐term catheterization of more than a month. In this review, we are going to introduce the recent advances in fabricating antibacterial materials to prevent catheter‐associated urinary tract infections, such as nanoparticles, antibiotics, chemical compounds, antimicrobial peptides, bacteriophages, and plant extracts. Introduction: Infant-type hemispheric glioma (IHG) is a rare form of cancer that affects newborns and infants. It is classified as a pediatric-type high-grade glioma and typically harbors receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) gene fusions. Here, we present the finding of a novel gene fusion IHG treated with a targeted therapy that has yet to be implemented for any other IHG case to date. Case Presentation: We report the case of a 12-month-old boy with IHG who presented with obstructive hydrocephalus due to a large mass in the right frontal lobe. The patient initially underwent mass resection, but subsequent imaging showed rapid interval progression of the residual tumor. Comprehensive molecular analysis of the tumor tissue revealed a novel GAB1-ABL2 gene fusion, and the patient was started on dasatinib, an ABL kinase inhibitor. Shortly after initiation of dasatinib treatment, there was a significant reduction in tumor size and enhancement, followed by stabilization of disease. Discussion: The patient's robust response to treatment suggests that dasatinib is an effective targeted therapy for IHG harboring a GAB1-ABL2 gene fusion. This finding may inform future investigations into the disease processes of IHG and help guide the diagnosis and treatment of IHG in the absence of previously identified gene fusions, improving clinical management of this vulnerable patient population. Introduction: The present study aimed to examine the effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum probiotics separately and synergistically on the immune system, growth factors, and disease resistance in the rainbow trout. Materials and Methods: At in vitro level, bacteriocin extracts of the target bacteria were used in the antimicrobial test against the fish pathogen Aeromonas hydrophila. Next, their effects on the fish blood lymphocytes were evaluated. At in vivo level, after feeding the fish in each treatment with the lactobacilli at the concentration of 108 CFU g-1 for 60 days, the growth indices were calculated. Then, blood samples from the rainbow trout were used to analyze any increase in the number of lymphocytes. Furthermore, given the infectious challenge with the pathogen Chryseobacterium aquaticum, the survival rates of the fish were determined. Results: L. acidophilus had the best effect on the growth factors and significantly increased the number of fish blood lymphocytes (p <0.05). The broth microdilution assay also was shown to reduce the amount of A. hydrophila colonies by more than 90%. Treatment with this lactobacillus species produced the highest survival rate with this infectious challenge. Then, the synergistic and the L. plantarum treatments were analyzed, respectively, which each showed a significant increase in the indices under study. Discussion and Conclusion: According to obtained results, it might be concluded that the feeding by L. acidophilus could likely enhance the immune responses and growth indices in fish both separately and synergistically with L. plantarum. COVID-19 has shown higher virulence compared to the previous coronavirus epidemics and has shown that it causes damages to the nervous system. In the present study, PrionW web server was used to predict the prion-like domains (PrLDs) in 15 structural and nonstructural proteins of SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2. Among all of these proteins, the results demonstrated one PrLD with the sequence 951EDDYQGKPLEFGATSAALQPEEEQEEDWLDDDSQQTVGQQDGSEDNQTTTIQTIVEVQPQL1012, having an amyloid-core of 988GQQDGSEDNQTTTIQTIVEVQ1009 in the non-structural protein of SARS-CoV-2 with pWALTZ_Score of 59.9936. The sequence of SARS-CoV-2 polyprotein was further investigated by FoldIndex© tool, and a negative fold index was demonstrated at the site of predicted prion-like domain. Multiple sequence alignment of this region with non-structural proteins of SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, showed that there is no sequence similarity between this predicted region and the corresponding regions of two other viruses. Considering the high similarity between polyproteins of SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV, and their ability to affect the nervous system, it could be suggested that a potential PrLD might be added to SARS-CoV polyprotein. Objective: Characterize practice patterns and acute (30-day) surgical complications following fenestration and shunt procedures for the treatment of cerebral cysts in pediatric patients. Methods: This study utilized the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP) Pediatric database. Patients were identified by International Classification of Disease codes for cerebral cysts and Current Procedural Terminology codes for shunting or fenestration. Demographic data, preoperative comorbidities, and postoperative complications were compared between the two procedures. Results: 741 patients were included in the data analysis, with a majority aged 4 years or younger (55.9%) and a male predominance (62.6%). Fenestration was performed in 590 (79.6%) patients. Primary shunting was performed in 151 (20.4%) patients. Patients who received shunts were more commonly aged 0–4 years and had proportionately worse preoperative health status. No statistically significant differences in postoperative complications were detected. Reoperation rate was 7.9% and 8.6% in the shunt and fenestration groups, respectively. Common reasons for reoperation were shunt revision or replacement and shunt placement after fenestration. Patients requiring shunting after a failed fenestration tended to be younger with higher American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification. Discussion: Fenestrations are performed more often than shunting. Generally, children who receive shunts are younger than those who undergo fenestration. Background: The optimal timing of ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) and gastrostomy placement, relative to the safety of simultaneous versus staged surgery, has not been clearly delineated in the literature. Objective: To study the optimal inter-procedural timing relative to distal VPS infection and pertinent reoperation. Methods: A fifteen-year, retrospective, single-center study was conducted on adults undergoing VPS and gastrostomy within 30-days. Patients were grouped according to inter-procedural interval: 0–24 hr (immediate), 24 hr-7 days (early), and 7–30 days (delayed). The primary endpoint of the study was VPS infection and distal shunt complications requiring reoperation. Potential predictors of the primary end point (baseline cohort characteristics, procedural factors) were examined with standard statistical methods. Results: A total of 188 patients met inclusion criteria. The average interval between procedures was 7 ± 6 days, with 43.1% undergoing VPS prior to gastrostomy. Primary endpoint was encountered in 5 patients (2.7%): 1 (5.9%) of 17 patients undergoing immediate placement, 3 (2.8%) of 107 with early placement, and 1 (1.6%) of 64 with delayed placement. Although not statistically significant, 3.7% of patients undergoing VPS first had the primary endpoint, compared to 1.9% of those with gastrostomy. There were no statistically significant associations between the primary outcome and peri-operative CSF counts, gastrostomy modality, hydrocephalus etiology, chronic steroid use, or extended antibiotic administration. Conclusion: Although the low overall event rate in this cohort precludes definitive determination regarding differential safety, the data generally support a practice of performing the procedures >24-hours apart, with placement of gastrostomy prior to VPS. Introduction: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a rare but serious condition in both adults and children. Risk factors include thrombophilias, dehydration, and certain inherited conditions like sickle cell trait (SCT). We present a case of CVST in a pediatric patient with SCT to highlight key considerations in diagnosis and management. Case Presentation: A 14-year-old male with SCT presented with worsening headache and vomiting after prolonged sun exposure and dehydration during athletic camp. Imaging revealed right occipital hemorrhage, hydrocephalus, right CSVT, and bilateral cerebellar developmental venous anomalies. Hypercoagulability testing was normal. Diagnostic evaluation included computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, MR venography (MRV), and hypercoagulability testing. The patient was treated with an external ventricular drain, platelet transfusion, and anticoagulation. Management also involved hydration, platelet transfusion, supportive care, and multidisciplinary follow-up. Follow-up MRV showed recanalization. Conclusion: This case highlights SCT as a potential CVST risk factor. Timely recognition, evaluation of precipitants like dehydration, supportive care including anticoagulation, and multidisciplinary management are important. An individualized approach is needed to balance thrombosis recurrence and bleeding risks. Patients with SCT require education on risks and prompt evaluation of neurological symptoms to allow early diagnosis and care of CVST. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives: Despite the high morbidity associated with glenohumeral dysplasia (GHD) in children with brachial plexus birth injuries, the progression of this condition often remains unnoticed, even after correcting for the underlying brachial plexus birth injuries. GHD, driven by a multifactorial process involving disruptions in both direct and indirect neural regulation of bony and muscular structures, can lead to intermittent or permanent shoulder mobility imbalances, significantly impacting the quality of life of those affected. Recent research efforts are increasingly directed toward identifying the root causes, managing the deformity, and determining effective treatment options for correcting GHD., Methods: A comprehensive search strategy was used by the authors to identify relevant literature relating to the progression, pathoanatomy, clinical presentation, and management of GHD following brachial plexus birth injuries across various search engines, such as PubMed, Scopus, and Embase. Considering the topic's interdisciplinary nature, articles were retrieved from both neurosurgical and orthopaedic journals to enrich the review., Results: Given the challenges in managing patients with brachial plexus birth injuries, a multidisciplinary care team consisting of certified occupational hand therapists, neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons, and orthopedic surgeons, specializing in brachial plexus injuries should be advocated for. The aim of this collaborative effort is to correct brachial plexus birth injuries and prevent the persistence of GHD., Conclusion: As research continues to focus on understanding the complexities of this condition, the aim of this review article is to summarize the current literature on the course of brachial plexus birth injury and the development of GHD.
