Food science encounters increasing complexity and challenges, necessitating more efficient, accurate, and sensitive analytical techniques. Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) emerges as a revolutionary tool, offering more molecular-level insights. This review delves into MSI's applications and challenges in food science. It introduces MSI principles and instruments such as matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization, desorption electrospray ionization, secondary ion mass spectrometry, and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, highlighting their application in chemical composition analysis, variety identification, authenticity assessment, endogenous substance, exogenous contaminant and residue analysis, quality control, and process monitoring in food processing and food storage. Despite its potential, MSI faces hurdles such as the complexity and cost of instrumentation, complexity in sample preparation, limited analytical capabilities, and lack of standardization of MSI for food samples. While MSI has a wide range of applications in food analysis and can provide more comprehensive and accurate analytical results, challenges persist, demanding further research and solutions. The future development directions include miniaturization of imaging devices, high-resolution and high-speed MSI, multiomics and multimodal data fusion, as well as the application of data analysis and artificial intelligence. These findings and conclusions provide valuable references and insights for the field of food science and offer theoretical and methodological support for further research and practice in food science., (© 2024 Institute of Food Technologists®.)

Lipids play crucial roles in the susceptibility and brain cellular responses to Alzheimer's disease (AD) and are increasingly considered potential soluble biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma. To delineate the pathological correlations of distinct lipid species, we conducted a comprehensive characterization of both spatially localized and global differences in brain lipid composition in App NL-G-F mice with spatial and bulk mass spectrometry lipidomic profiling, using human amyloid-expressing (h-Aβ) and WT mouse brains controls. We observed age-dependent increases in lysophospholipids, bis(monoacylglycerol) phosphates, and phosphatidylglycerols around Aβ plaques in App NL-G-F mice. Immunohistology-based co-localization identified associations between focal pro-inflammatory lipids, glial activation, and autophagic flux disruption. Likewise, in human donors with varying Braak stages, similar studies of cortical sections revealed co-expression of lysophospholipids and ceramides around Aβ plaques in AD (Braak stage V/VI) but not in earlier Braak stage controls. Our findings in mice provide evidence of temporally and spatially heterogeneous differences in lipid composition as local and global Aβ-related pathologies evolve. Observing similar lipidomic changes associated with pathological Aβ plaques in human AD tissue provides a foundation for understanding differences in CSF lipids with reported clinical stage or disease severity., (© 2024 The Authors. It is aimed to reveal the basement topography, the coal-bearing levels, the alteration zones containing uranium ore, and the tectonic structure prevailing by using two dimensional (2D) seismic reflection method in the Thrace Paleogene-Neogene Basin. In this context, seismic data collected on the six profiles were interpreted by correlating with the data of 97 wells. In the seismic lines, respectively, the metamorphic basement-Eocene boundary, the top of the coal-bearing zone and the boundary of the Danişmen-Ergene formations were confirmed by using the borehole data. By evaluating seismic data, the coal propagation is modeled with three dimensional (3D) figures. Moreover, coal accumulation starts from the southwest of the field and continues towards the northeast, and it is supported by the results obtained from the borehole data. The presence of uranium ore in some of the alteration zones and borehole data indicated that all alteration zones determined should be inspected for uranium ore. In addition to normal and reverse faults, positive and negative flower structures formed in the strike-slip fault zones were determined, and lignite deposits were cut in the flank of these structures. The presence of the evaporate salt zone in Ankara-Polatlı region has been determined by the drillings. It is thought to be the largest reserve in Türkiye. The seismic reflection method was used to determine the top-bottom levels of the region; its depth; its thickness and extent boundaries; the horst-graben structures; base depth and tectonic movements affecting the study area. Data were collected on three seismic lines. The near-surface tomographic velocity sections were compatible with the top-of-the-zone depth observed in the drillings. As a result of the study, the depth and thickness of the top-bottom of the zone were determined along the lines. Within the scope of the study, a combined interpretation was made on the lines by using gravity and seismic data. The extent of the ore zone was determined only in the E-W direction section, but not in the north-south direction lines since they are outside the license area and the seismic lines. The closest point of the evaporate zone to the surface is approximately 150 m, the deepest point is approximately 310 m, the average thickness is approximately 100 m and the maximum thickness is 185 m. In this study, the production technology of barite, fluorite, rare-earth elements, and thorium-bearing rare-earth oxides from the Eskişehir-Beylikova were investigated, and the processes that can be used in the production of thorium-free mixed rare earth oxides were tested. The applied processes are roasting, leaching, solvent extraction and precipitation methods, respectively. After all studies, the optimum roasting temperature and roasting duration are determined as 600 °C and 1 hour. In the extraction stage, the highest leaching efficiency is achieved with 5 M HCl, 1-hour leaching duration, 1/3 solid/liquid ratio and 35 °C leaching temperature. While methyl tri C8-C10 ammonium chloride (Adogen 464) is used for the removal of iron from produced solution, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) is used for the removal of thorium. As a result of solvent extraction studies, the solution containing rare earth elements is precipitated under optimum conditions. After precipitation, the product contains 99.65% rare earth oxides. Anatolia’s geographical location as a land bridge between Europe, Asia, and Africa, makes it an important passage for mammal migrations, with a rich fossil potential. However, detailed scientific studies on the Neogene paleogeography of Anatolia are scarce. Rodentia is among the major mammal groups generally adapting to different habitat types and rapidly evolving with the changing geography. Investigating this group provides data to increase the accuracy of ecological analyses. We selected Rodentia fossils from the Miocene excavation sites with published papers, and examined specimens of 14 families from 106 localities. Cricetidae, Muridae, Gliridae, and Sciuridae were found to be most dominant rodent families in Anatolia during the Early Miocene, indicating a high humidity, whereas ecological changes towards the end of this epoch led to a complex formation in the biogeography of micromammals. In the Middle Miocene, a 65% decrease in Muridae, the emergence of Eomyidae, and a significant increase in Spalacidae suggest a climate shift, towards tropical or semi-tropical conditions. In the Late Miocene, Muridae regaining its maximum level and becoming the most crowded family may indicate an unexpected rise in humidity, while the stable prevalence of Eomyidae and Castoridae point to the continuity of aquatic environments and humidity. Metamorphites of Niğde Massif, which form the basis of study area covering the Niğde vicinity in Central Anatolia, are composed of Late Devonian Gümüşler, Carboniferous-early Permian Kaleboynu late Permian Kızıldağ formation and unconformable Triassic-Late Cretaceous cover units from bottom to the top, which are separated from each other with unconformities. The Triassic succession (Söğütlüdere formation) of phyllite-marble-schist alternations with common amphibolite levels is first distinguished in this study, unconformably overlies the Paleozoic succession. Thick homogeneous marbles of Jurassic-Cretaceous period, is defined by quartzite at the bottom representing the unconformity at the base, is defined as the Kırtepe formation. The succession probably ends with the Late Cretaceous metaflysch (Kırkpınar formation) constituting metaophiolite blocks with unconformable contact relationships. Amphibolite sample of the Söğütlüdere formation gives 239 Ma (Middle Triassic) age, which is interpreted as the crystallization age of the primary basic magmatism. The youngest detrital zircon ages (223-224 Ma) obtained from the metaclastics of the same formation shows that the primary deposition age of the formation is probably Late Triassic, which is consistent with this data. Geochemical data indicate an extensional environment of the alkaline composition and anorogenic originated basic volcanism developed on the continental crust. When these results evaluated together with the regional data, the metabasites of the Söğütlüdere formation can be interpreted as the first phase products of rifting, which commenced with the rifting process of the Tauride-Anatolide Platform in the Triassic period and resulted in the opening of the Inner Tauride Ocean and the break off the Kırşehir Block. The Strandja Massif cropping out in NW Turkey is cut by Late Cretaceous intrusives. These are called Strandja Intrusives and they are felsic and mafic coeval intrusives. Felsic intrusives consist of granite, granodiorite, quartz monzonite and syenite, while mafic intrusives consist of diorite and gabbro composition. Main composition of felsic intrusives consists of quartz, alkali feldspar, plagioclase, biotite, amphibole ±pyroxene mineral association, while main composition of mafic ones consists of plagioclase, biotite, amphibole ±pyroxene ±olivine mineral association. Amphiboles hydrated double-chain mineral of the Strandja Intrusives observed in all rocks used as an index mineral in this study to understand the petrological evolution of the rocks. According to Confocal Raman Spectroscopy studies amphiboles were actinolite type and exhibited similar spectrum and results of mineral chemistry reveals that they were calcic/Mg-hornblende types. According to geothermobarometer calculations, amphiboles crystallize in felsic intrusives at a pressure range of 0.49-0.94 kbar and a temperature of 757.52-814.49o C temperature at a depth of approximately 1.34-4.93 km, while in mafic ones at 2.59 kbar pressure and 892.82o C temperature at 9.97 km depth. Different temperatures-depth conditions and overlaps in Raman shift obtained from amphiboles indicate that these intrusives are derived from different sources but crystallized in the same environment. The Mersin ophiolite of southern Turkey is a well-exposed, Late Cretaceous, Neo-Tethyan supra-subduction zone ophiolite. It is underlain by metamorphic sole rocks inferred to have formed at the top of a down-going plate during subduction. These have a well-developed foliation and lineation observable in the field (defined by the preferred orientations of hornblende and plagioclase crystals). Here we present the first magnetic fabric data reported from the Mersin ophiolite with such settings. Anisotropy of low field magnetic susceptibility ellipsoids in sampled amphibolites have clustered, NW-plunging minimum principal axes representing poles to a SE-dipping magnetic foliation that aligns with the macroscopic metamorphic foliation plane seen in the field. Maximum AMS principal axes define a SE-plunging magnetic lineation that is parallel to the macroscopic metamorphic lineation. Oblate magnetic fabrics at specimen-level and an overall triaxial fabric at locality-level in these rocks are consistent with the development of the dominant metamorphic fabric by a combination of pure shear flattening and simple shearing during the formation and exhumation of the Mersin sole rocks. These observations are compatible with a recent tectonic model for the evolution of the ophiolite based on paleomagnetic data that invokes flattening and exhumation of the down-going slab in an incipient subduction zone during supra-subduction zone spreading. In the western Anatolia, the tectonic regime transitioned from crustal shortening to extension during Late Cenozoic time and evidence of this event was imprinted on basement lithologies and N-S and E-W oriented two distinct basin sub-types. Here, we examined the exhumation mechanism of the Menderes massif that forms the basement of these basins from a different perspective. The N-S oriented basins overlying different basement rock types were re-evaluated based on new evidence that has potential to put new constrains for interpreting the tectonic evolution of the area. Unroofing of the Menderes Massif must have developed due to compressional core complex. Per the model generated from our observations, we propose that the western Anatolia underwent a N-S contraction during the Early-Middle Miocene time. In this period from Marmara Sea at north to Mediterranean Sea at south, numerous basins, as in Gördes and Demirci, were bound by N-S oriented oblique faults. Evidence of contraction in the region during Early Middle Miocene time is understood by N-S oriented obique, strike-slip faults, folds, and reverse faults. Starting from the Plio-Quaternary time, the contractional regime was shifted to extension and ensuing E-W oriented grabens were formed in Gediz, Büyük Menderes, and Gökova. The structural deformation associated with these E-W oriented grabens are normal faults and related open folds. The main objective of this study is destined to combine the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), Weight of Evidence (WOE), Logistic Regression (LR) methods and geographic information system (GIS) to predict landslide susceptibility of the Echorfa region (northwestern of Algeria). Nine factors such as slope, aspect, lithology, distance to faults, lineaments density, distance to the streams, precipitations, land use and altitude are included in landslide susceptibility evaluation process. A detailed landslide inventory map was established by satellite images and filed surveys. Three landslide susceptibility maps are established using the different statistical models. Five landslide susceptibility categories are generated by the GSI classification nil, low, moderate, high and very high susceptibility. The performance of the different models in landslide susceptibility is calculated based in the area under curve of the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) which give a satisfactory result. The results showed that the WOE is more performance than the two other techniques. The produced landslide susceptibility maps provide important spatial information about landslide prone area, where the constructed map’s content will help the decision makers in land use planning. This review is the tenth update of the original article published in 1999 on the application of matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI) mass spectrometry to the analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates and brings coverage of the literature to the end of 2018. Also included are papers that describe methods appropriate to glycan and glycoprotein analysis by MALDI, such as sample preparation techniques, even though the ionization method is not MALDI. Topics covered in the first part of the review include general aspects such as theory of the MALDI process, new methods, matrices, derivatization, MALDI imaging, fragmentation and the use of arrays. The second part of the review is devoted to applications to various structural types such as oligo‐ and poly‐saccharides, glycoproteins, glycolipids, glycosides, and biopharmaceuticals. Most of the applications are presented in tabular form. The third part of the review covers medical and industrial applications of the technique, studies of enzyme reactions, and applications to chemical synthesis. The reported work shows increasing use of combined new techniques such as ion mobility and highlights the impact that MALDI imaging is having across a range of diciplines. The aim of this study is to investigate the environmental impacts of a full-scale wind farm using life cycle assessment methodology. The facility in question is an onshore wind farm located in Turkey with a total installed capacity of 47.5 MW consisting of 2.5 MW Nordex wind turbines. Hub height and rotor diameter of the wind turbines are 100 m. The system boundary is defined as material extraction, part production, construction, operation and maintenance and decommissioning phases of the wind farm. The functional unit is 1-kWh electricity produced. Environmental impacts are mainly generated by manufacturing and installation operations. Steel sheet usage in tower manufacturing is the main contributor to abiotic depletion of fossil resources, acidification, eutrophication, global warming and marine aquatic ecotoxicity potentials. Apart from ozone layer depletion, end-of-life phase decreases the environmental impacts due to metal recycling. Metal recycling ratio scenario results show that when the recycling ratio decreases from 90 to 20%; increases of 110%, 102%, 92% and 87% are observed in acidification, terrestrial ecotoxicity, marine aquatic ecotoxicity and global warming potentials, respectively. In the baseline, the main parts which are manufactured in Germany are transported by sea to Turkey. Transportation scenario involves shifting the manufacturing of main parts to Turkey then transporting these parts by trucks to the farm. This conversion causes increases of 31%, 35% and 27% in abiotic depletion of fossil resources, freshwater aquatic ecotoxicity and global warming potentials, respectively, while causing decreases of 11% and 4% in acidification and eutrophication potentials generated by transportation activities, respectively. The article discusses the use of digital census microdata as sources for the historical demography of the Ottoman Empire. Topics covered include the current state of microdata from the Ottoman Empire, as of 2022, the new project funded by the Austrian Science Fund and the Mosaic project standards. It also cites how international initiatives have resulted in the building of large census databases that are accessible for comparative research in historical demography and household structures.

The Denizli region is located to the east of the Buldan Horst. Although they follow the same trends as the Büyük Menderes and Gediz Grabens, the Denizli region has undergone semi-independent evolution during the Quaternary. The essential morphotectonic elements of the area are the Denizli Basin and the surrounding Babadağ and the Güzelpınar Horsts. The Babadağ Horst is the most distinct morphotectonic element of the region. It is bounded in the north by the Denizli fault, a listric normal fault, and possibly a major detachment fault. The Laodicea and Güzelpınar Horsts located within the downthrown block of the fault may be regarded as antithetic structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The closure of Tethys Ocean has led to shaping the Central Pontides together with different types of rocks. In the east of Kargı (Gökçedoğan), which is located in the Central Pontides, allochthonous rocks of Late Palaeozoic- Early Cenozoic age and autochthonous units exist together, and allochthonous rocks present various tectono-stratigraphical sequences. Distinctive tectonic slices developed in the area as a consequence of the thrusting of the Permian carbonates from the north towards the south over the Middle Jurassic accretionary Complex (Kunduz Metamorphites) that form the basement of the area, and also because of the thrusting of the units of the Kirazbaşı Complex (ophiolitic melange) and Mesozoic carbonate rocks over this basement from the south towards the north because of the closure of Tethys Ocean. This paper presents whole-rock geochemical data, which suggest that the metabasites and the ophiolitic basalts are tholeiitic. The Jurassic metabasites from the Kunduz Unit and basalts from ophiolitic melange are characterized by the mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) and within plate tholeiites. Seismic waves carry all the geological and geotechnical characteristics of the units they pass along the route they travel on. Therefore, seismic waves can be called the signature of the route it passes through. If the blasting point is considered as source, blast-induced seismic waves measured at a certain distance from the source can be revealed and this form can be integrated into the dynamic numerical model, the effects that will occur at any point of the model can be predicted. In this study, seismic waves induced from single-hole blast and a group blast consisting of holes with the same characteristics as a pilot blast hole were obtained using particle velocity data obtained from seismographs at certain distances and integrated into the numerical model. The data processing technique used is to estimate the theoretical group blasting data from the pilot data according to the linear superposition principle and compare with the real group blasting data to determine the nonlinear behavior effect on the blast source from the difference. When the results were examined, it was observed that the numerical model results and field measurements coincided. Magmatic processes that emerged with the evolution of the Neotethys ocean and associated lithospheric plates caused the formation of significant mineralization in the Tethys belt. The Eastern Pontides, which are located in the northeast of Türkiye and are a part of the Tethys metallogenic belt, are particularly rich in porphyry-type mineralization and represent an important region for Cu-Mo exploration. A large number of Cu, Pb and Zn anomalies have been determined in a large region including the Güzelyayla Cu-Mo field by stream sediment sampling. The Güzelyayla occurrence is Cu-Mo mineralization associated with andesitic/basaltic volcanic rocks and intrusive dacites crosscutting these rocks. The Güzelyayla Cu-Mo mineralization developed in the stockwork and fault-controlled silicified zones. Homogenization temperature values vary between 324 °C and 420 °C (average 374 °C). Salinity values range between 2.2 and 18.6% NaCl (average 9.1% NaCl). A concentric alteration zoning surrounding the potassic alteration indicates a gradual change in the physicochemical properties of the solutions forming the mineralization. The Güzelyayla mineralization was formed in the Eocene (50.7 ± 1.0 million years) period in the Upper Cretaceous volcanic rocks in relation to post-collisional processes in the magmatic arc environment. Contrary to previous studies, estimation zone models were created and an estimated 54.2 million tons of extracted/potential mineral resource with an average grade of 0.20% Cu and 0.014% Mo (0.26% Cu equivalent grade) was made in the Güzelyayla field. In the northern margin of Uludağ Massif in northwest Anatolia, the Bursa Detachment having top-tothe north, northeast normal sense of shear separates the lower plate high-grade metamorphic rocks of Series-A (Uludağ Group) from the upper plate low-grade metamorphic rocks of Series-B (Karakaya Complex). The deeper section of Uludağ Massif is represented by the Oligocene metagranites at the southern parts of the massif that is exposed due to the youngest high-angle Soğukpınar normal fault. In this study, the usability of granite (magmatic) and recrystallized limestone (metamorphic) natural stone wastes as alternative raw materials in ceramic tile production was investigated. Based on the CaO, SiO2, and Al2O3 compounds found in waste powders, mixtures containing 65% granite and 35% recrystallized limestone (by mass) were prepared to obtain the ceramic phases of gehlenite, wollastonite and anorthite as a result of thermal transformation. The grain size of both raw materials is -149 µm (d90 = 110.957 µm). The powder mixtures were moistened with 7% (by mass) water and shaped in a steel mold with dimensions of 75x20x50 mm with a uniaxial press with a setting of 127 MPa. The first series samples were called as natural building stone (DYT), and the second series samples, in which wood chips of 2% (by mass) -1 mm grain size are added to obtain porous material, were called as natural building stone - porous (DYT-G). The samples belonging to both series was applied heat treatment at 1.160°C. Phase analysis of samples obtained after heat treatment was measured by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM-EDS) methods, and sintering properties were measured using water absorption coefficient, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, density-porosity and color measurement tests. Gehlenite and wollastonite phases were detected in the heat treated samples, but no anorthite phase was observed. According to the test results, it was determined that the flexural strength (22.64 MPa) of the DYT marked sample was in accordance with the ceramic tile standards. In the DYT-G example, despite the decreasing unit volume mass value, it was determined that the bending strength (16.50 MPa) was in the range of ceramic tile strength values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tectonic forces formed in the continental crust, cause permanent changes in stress, compression and deformation. The amplitudes of earthquake waves vary with the stress/strain distribution in the crust. In this study, the change of stress/strain and regional absorption coefficient, which is effective in tectonic forces caused by elastic deformation energy accumulating in the brittle crust over time, was investigated. The study area is the middle part of the North Anatolian Fault Zone and the area formed by Ezinepazarı fault zone and Merzifon fault zone. In this area, Coulomb stress analysis was carried out by using the focal mechanism solution values of the earthquake that occurred in Yoldere - Erbaa, Tokat on October 9, 2015 (ML=5.1). In order to examine the deformation caused by this earthquake in and around the study area, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data were evaluated and the velocities of these stations were calculated using GNSS data of these stations for the years 2013-2014-2015-2016. Also, regional absorption coefficients were determined by using earthquake data. As a result, Coulomb stress analysis results, velocity values distribution obtained from GNSS data and absorption findings obtained from seismological study were evaluated together. In our days, slags are considered secondary resources due to the metals they contain. Copper slags having economical operating grades in terms of Zn, Cu, Ce, Ni, Co, Mo, and V, have complex mineralogy due to their thermal processing based formations. Methods of recovery for copper and other precious metals from slags, have been studied, and for which, flotation plants in industrial scale are operated. In cases where physical or physico-chemical mineral processing methods are not sufficient, hydrometallurgical methods are applied. In this study, the flotation method was applied to a copper slag with 0.9% Cu grade. Copper recovery and the concentration grade were determined to be approximately 40 and 22.7% Cu, respectively. Metal extractions were examined through direct leaching tests. Using H2SO4 in the leaching, resulted in gel formation, leading to an investigation of the leach parameters using HCl. Cu and Ce extractions of around 70-80% were attained as a result of a test performed for 2 hours with the addition of 25 g/L H2O2 at a rate of 20-25% solids and 300 g/L HCl concentration. An examination of the metal relations, indicated that the dissolution behavior of Cu and Ce was quite similar to the Al dissolution (R² =0.9). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gülbahçe Fault Zone (GFZ) is a significant tectonic structure and seismic source for İzmir city and its surroundings. The major earthquakes occurred at the surroundings of GFZ are 2005 Seferihisar, 2020 Samos Island-Aegean Sea and 2021 Seferihisar earthquakes. In this study, the crustal thinning and tectonic stress distribution of GFZ and its surroundings were analyzed by using the new gravity and magnetic data. The correspondence analysis was applied by appraising together the magnetic and free-air anomaly data. Moreover, the average density of the subsurface structure was calculated by applying the Parasnis method. The deviatoric stress calculation was executed and the change of the physical properties that controls the gravity and magnetic anomaly of the crustal structure of the GFZ and its surroundings from north to south was investigated. Therefore, the average density values, which were obtained from gravity anomalies, were computed as 2.59 gr / cm3 in the north of the study region and it decreased to 2.06, 1.8 and 1.49 gr / cm3 towards to the south. The freeair gravity anomaly values were between 0-70 mGal and the magnetic anomalies were between -450-150 nT. The deviatoric stress values were between -0.2-0.1 MPa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
