PURPOSE lthough clinical ophthalmologic findings have been reported, no study documented magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type VI. The aim of this study was to determine the ophthalmologic imaging findings of MPS type VI in the pediatric age group retrospectively. METHODS Brain MRIs of 10 patients with MPS type VI and 49 healthy children were evaluated independently by two pediatric radiologists for the following characteristics: globe volume, ocular wall thickness, and optic nerve sheath diameter for each orbit. The means of the measurement of each group were compared by using an independent t-test. Agreement and bias between reviewers were assessed by intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC). RESULTS A total of 59 children [32 girls (54.23%), 27 boys (45.77%); age range, 4-16 years; mean age, 10.37 ± 3.73 years] were included in the study. Statistical analysis revealed smaller eyeballs and thicker ocular walls of patients with MPS type VI (P < .001 and P < .001, respectively). However, there was no statistically significant difference in terms of optic nerve sheath diameter between the two groups (P=.648). CONCLUSION Patients with MPS type VI displayed reduced globe volumes and increased ocular wall thicknesses compared to the healthy children. Therefore, we recommend that ophthalmologic imaging findings might prove to be an auxiliary tool in the diagnosis of MPS patients.

Objective: Caffeine is frequently used for the treatment of apnea in preterm babies. Its mechanism of action includes not only antagonism of adenosine receptors on central nervous system but also an increase in electrical activity of the diaphragm. Caffeine’s direct effect on diaphragm was investigated via electromyography, but ultrasound has not been used to show visible changes in muscles after the treatment before. Therefore, we aimed to assess the effect of caffeine on diaphragmatic function through ultrasonographic examination. Materials and Methods: It was a prospective observational study. Fifty-six participants receiving nasal continuous positive airway pressure with less than or equal to 32 weeks’ gestational age born were enrolled. Diaphragmatic thickness, amplitude of excursion, and velocity of movement were measured before and within 5 minutes after caffeine loading dose and compared to each other. The protocol was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier NCT04483492. Results: Diaphragmatic thicknesses and diaphragmatic velocity of movement did not differ after the treatment. However, amplitude of excursion of the diaphragm was found significantly higher after caffeine loading dose (8.7 mm, 10mm, respectively, P < .05). Conclusion: Diaphragm excursion increased after caffeine treatment in preterm babies, and this finding was potentially supported the direct effect of the caffeine on diaphragm. Another important finding of this study is that it reinforces the utility of ultrasonography in assessing diaphragmatic function in preterm infants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: It has been reported in many studies that Growth Differentiation Factor-15 (GDF-15) has an important role in physiological or pathological processes. This study was aimed to investigate the role of GDF-15 in infertility and its treatment outcomes. Material and Method: According to their ovarian reserve characteristics, 88 infertile women were divided into three groups: normal ovarian reserve (NOR) (n= 42), diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) (n= 22), and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) (n= 24). Serum estradiol (E2), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), and GDF-15 levels were measured in their serum. The antagonist protocol patients' total oocyte, meiosis II (MII) oocytes, embryo count, and clinical pregnancy rates were documented and compared. Results: In terms of serum GDF-15 concentrations, there was no statistically significant difference among the mean values of the three study groups. The mean FSH level at baseline was substantially higher in the DOR group compared to the PCOS group (p=0.006*). The median serum AMH levels of all three groups were found to be statistically different (p=<0.001*). When the groups were compared in terms of averages of total oocytes, MII oocytes, and embryos, it was observed that the NOR group and the PCOS group both had higher values than the AOR group (p=0.001*). Conclusion: In our study, a significant and strong relationship was found between serum GDF-15 level and the number of embryos formed as a result of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. Thereby, serum GDF-15 level may be considered to be a biomarker for predicting IVF clinical outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Purpose: There are a few studies regarding intracranial findings in neonates with Noonan syndrome (NS); however, there are no quantitative analyses in a pediatric population. The aim of this study was to find characteristic intracranial abnormalities and to quantitatively analyze the posterior fossa and cranium base in children with NS. Methods: A total of 30 patients (11 females and 19 males, mean age 13.1 ± 4.3 years) were retrospectively identified between July 2017 and June 2022. Twenty‐one patients had MRI. Age at MRI examination, sex, genetic mutations, and clinical findings were noted. In patients with MRI, the presence of white matter lesions, basal ganglia lesions, corpus callosum abnormalities, sellar/parasellar lesions, and tonsillar ectopia was noted. For morphometric analysis, cerebellar diameter, vermis and clivus heights, cranial base, tentorial and infratentorial angles, and McRae's and Twining's lines were each measured twice by two radiologists individually. Results: The most common lesions were focal white matter lesions, followed by abnormalities of the splenium of the corpus callosum. The cerebellar diameter, vermis and clivus heights, Twining's line, and infratentorial angle were significantly smaller; cranial base angle and tentorial angle were significantly larger in NS (p <.05). Interrater and intrarater agreements were the highest for cerebellar diameter and the lowest for tentorial angle measurements. Conclusion: Children with NS had characteristic callosal and tentorial findings and neuroimaging findings similar to other RASopathies. This study also shows that a small posterior fossa and flattening of the cranial base are present in children with NS, which may aid in diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The prevalence of acute pancreatitis and acute recurrent pancreatitis in children has increased over the years, and there are limited data about imaging findings. This study aimed to reveal the imaging findings of acute pancreatitis and acute recurrent pancreatitis in children at a tertiary care hospital. Materials and Methods: The patients with acute pancreatitis and acute recurrent pancreatitis diagnosed between January 2007 and December 2018 were included. Demographic and clinical features, follow-up period, and interventions were noted. Imaging features were evaluated for pancreatic enlargement, peripancreatic fluid, and biliary ducts for initial examination and pancreas parenchymal necrosis, peripancreatic collection, walled-off necrosis, pseudocyst, parenchymal atrophy, and biliary ductal dilatation for follow-up. Results: The study included 74 patients with a mean age of 9 ± 4.9 years. The most common causes of acute pancreatitis and acute recurrent pancreatitis were biliary tract anomalies (n = 21), biliary ductal stones (n = 9), and cystic fibrosis (n = 8). Findings consistent with acute pancreatitis were determined by ultrasound in 40.5% (n = 30/74), whereas by magnetic resonance imaging in 60% (n = 39/65). Forty-one percent of the patients (n = 16) with positive magnetic resonance imaging findings did not show any findings on ultrasound. Acute recurrent pancreatitis was seen in 32 patients (43.2%). Follow-up imaging was performed in 55 patients (74.3%) between 2 months and 11 years. At follow-up, 8 patients had peripancreatic collections (6 walled-off necrosis and 2 pseudocysts). Conclusion: Recognizing the imaging findings of acute pancreatitis and its complications is crucial. Magnetic resonance imaging should be preferred as a second option following ultrasound, with the advantages of biliary ductal system delineation and better characterization of complications.
