The optical module of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope is an innovative multi-faceted large area photodetection module. It contains 31 three-inch photomultiplier tubes in a single 0.44m diameter pressure-resistant glass sphere. The module is a sensory device also comprising calibration instruments and electronics for power, readout and data acquisition. It is capped with a breakout-box with electronics for connection to an electro-optical cable for power and long-distance communication to the onshore control station. The design of the module was qualified for the first time in the deep sea in 2013. Since then, the technology has been further improved to meet requirements of scalability, cost-effectiveness and high reliability. The module features a sub-nanosecond timing accuracy and a dynamic range allowing the measurement of a single photon up to a cascade of thousands of photons, suited for the measurement of the Cherenkov radiation induced in water by secondary particles from interactions of neutrinos with energies in the range of GeV to PeV. A distributed production model has been implemented for the delivery of more than 6000 modules in the coming few years with an average production rate of more than 100 modules per month. KM3NeT will study atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos with two multipurpose neutrino detectors, ARCA and ORCA, primarily aimed at GeV–PeV neutrinos. Thanks to the multiphotomultiplier tube design of the digital optical modules, KM3NeT is capable of detecting the neutrino burst from a Galactic or near-Galactic core-collapse supernova. This potential is already exploitable with the first detection units deployed in the sea. This paper describes the real-time implementation of the supernova neutrino search, operating on the two KM3NeT detectors since the first months of 2019. A quasi-online astronomy analysis is introduced to study the time profile of the detected neutrinos for especially significant events. Themechanism of generation and distribution of alerts, aswell as the integration into theSNEWSandSNEWS 2.0 global alert systems, are described. The approach for the follow-up of external alerts with a search for a neutrino excess in the archival data is defined. - Abstract
KM3NeT is a research infrastructure aiming to study astrophysical sources as well as to perform particle physics studies, through the detection of neutrinos in the abyssal depths of the Mediterranean Sea. The KM3NeT/ORCA detector (Oscillation Research with Cosmics in the Abyss), currently under construction, is deployed at 2450 m depth near Toulon, France. It consists of vertical structures (Detection Units) equipped with spherical Digital Optical Modules, each hosting a set of photomultiplier tubes capable of detecting neutrino events from the Cherenkov radiation induced by the daughter particles. In this contribution, an analysis of data collected with the first 6 Detection Units (ORCA6) leading to a sample of atmospheric neutrino events is described. The angular resolution and the energy reconstruction performance for this event selection, which is a key factor for measuring the atmospheric neutrino flux are presented.

- Abstract
KM3NeT/ORCA is a water-Cherenkov neutrino detector, currently under construction in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of 2450 meters. The project’s main goal is the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy by measuring the energy- and zenith-angle-resolved oscillation probabilities of atmospheric neutrinos traversing the Earth. Additionally, the detector observes a large amount of atmospheric muons, which can be used to study extensive air showers generated by cosmic ray particles. This work describes a deep-learning based reconstruction of atmospheric muons using graph convolutional networks. They are used to reconstruct the zenith angle, the muon multiplicity and the diameter of atmospheric muon bundles. Simulations and measured data from an early four line stage of the detector are used to evaluate the performance. Furthermore, the reconstructions are compared to the ones of classical approaches, and use cases for the indirect study of cosmic ray particles are shown.

The discovery of a high-energy cosmic neutrino flux has paved the way for the field of neutrino astronomy. For a large part of the flux, the sources remain unidentified. The KM3NeT detector, which is under construction in the Mediterranean sea, is designed to determine their origin. KM3NeT will instrument a cubic kilometre of seawater with photomultiplier tubes that detect Cherenkov radiation from neutrino interaction products with nanosecond precision. For single cascade event signatures, KM3NeT already showed that it can reach degree-level resolutions, greatly increasing the use of these neutrinos for astronomy. In this contribution, we further refine the cascade reconstruction by making a more detailed model of the neutrinos events and including additional information on the hit times. The arrival time of light can be used to improve the identification of double cascade signatures from tau neutrinos, and the angular resolution of both single and double cascade signatures. - Abstract
Star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and starburst galaxies (SBGs) are extragalactic sources which could produce high-energy neutrinos. In principle, they could play a rather important role for explaining at least a sizeable part of IceCube’s observations of astophysical neutrino. Using a recent theoretical model which implemented a blending of spectral indeces, we present the KM3NeT/ARCA sensitivities for such a diffuse flux from the startburst galaxies. In particular, we provide the 5-year differential sensitivity for the two building blocks of ARCA. We make use only of the track-like events in the range of 100 GeV - 10 PeV differentiate in 11 bins of energy. We show how the upcoming neutrino telescope could observe the diffuse SFG and SBG within 5 years of data taking. We found the minimum of the sensitivity at around 100 TeV, which is also the energy where the SBG contribution is expected to peak. This would not only constrain the multi-component fit of the observed astrophysical neutrino flux at that energy (100 TeV), but would also provide us a direct link between the star-forming activity in the reservoir environments and the hadronic emissions.

LCF/BQ/IN17/11620019), EU: MSC program (ref. 713673), Spain., The next generation of water Cherenkov neutrino telescopes in the Mediterranean Sea are under construction offshore France (KM3NeT/ORCA) and Sicily (KM3NeT/ARCA). The KM3NeT/ORCA detector features an energy detection threshold which allows to collect atmospheric neutrinos to study flavour oscillation. This paper reports the KM3NeT/ORCA sensitivity to this phenomenon. The event reconstruction, selection and classification are described. The sensitivity to determine the neutrino mass ordering was evaluated and found to be 4.4 sigma if the true ordering is normal and 2.3 sigma if inverted, after 3 years of data taking. The precision to measure Delta m(32)(2) and theta(23) were also estimated and found to be 85.10(-6) eV(2) and ((+1.9)(-3.1))degrees for normal neutrino mass ordering and, 75.10(-6) eV(2) and ((+2.0)(-7.0))degrees for inverted ordering. Finally, a unitarity test of the leptonic mixing matrix by measuring the rate of tau neutrinos is described. 14. Task complexity and operational risk management in military aviation.

- Abstract
Flight risk assessment has been based on traditional tools that are simple to use but not validated for the consideration of all relevant Complexity Contributing Factors (CCFs). This work aims to improve the process of risk management of missions in military aviation and allow for a more thorough examination of Complexity Contributing Factors (CCFs). After a series of structured workshops, a classification scheme of 46 CCFs was developed and tested in a large number of operational missions ( n = 227). Principal Components Analysis has verified four complexity classes that provided a structure for the CCFs while multiple linear regression analysis showed that the four classes of complexity correlated well with mission success outcomes. The study provides evidence that the classification scheme of complexity considers a variety of observable markers (CCFs) which can be used to rate complexity and introduce mission changes that create a safety environment for military missions. Practitioner summary: This study develops a classification scheme of complexity with a large number of observable markers (Complexity Contributing Factors) that can be used to rate the complexity of missions in military aviation. Earlier studies on task complexity and a series of workshops with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) have been used to develop the classification scheme which was validated with data from a large number of military missions.
