Symptomatic colon lipoma is a rare occurrence in clinical practice, and its association with sigmoid volvulus is even rarer. We present a case of a man in his 70s who presented to our emergency department with suspected intestinal obstruction. Upon examination, sigmoid volvulus was diagnosed and successfully treated endoscopically through decompression and detorsion. However, the patient experienced a recurrence, leading to the decision to perform sigmoid resection as a Hartmann’s procedure. Subsequently, a prolapsed tumor was observed through the stoma, which was endoscopically resected, revealing a pedunculated submucous colonic lipoma. This case report highlights the potential association between sigmoid volvulus and the presence of a large colon lipoma. Thus, giant colonic lipoma should be considered as a differential diagnosis among the causes of colonic volvulus.

This study examines the computational challenges in elucidating intricate chemical systems, particularly through ab-initio methodologies. This work highlights the Divide-Expand-Consolidate (DEC) approach for coupled cluster (CC) theory—a linear-scaling, massively parallel framework—as a viable solution. Detailed scrutiny of the DEC framework reveals its extensive applicability for large chemical systems, yet it also acknowledges inherent limitations. To mitigate these constraints, the cluster perturbation theory is presented as an effective remedy. Attention is then directed towards the CPS (D-3) model, explicitly derived from a CC singles parent and a doubles auxiliary excitation space, for computing excitation energies. The reviewed new algorithms for the CPS (D-3) method efficiently capitalize on multiple nodes and graphical processing units, expediting heavy tensor contractions. As a result, CPS (D-3) emerges as a scalable, rapid, and precise solution for computing molecular properties in large molecular systems, marking it an efficient contender to conventional CC models.

Core-shell particles with thin noble metal shells represent an attractive material class with potential for various applications ranging from catalysis to biomedical applications, but the synthesis of well-defined core-shell architectures remains highly challenging. Here, the authors report the chemically induced self-limiting growth of atomically-thin and homogeneous platinum shells on a variety of gold nanostructures.

It is not uncommon that patients with prostate carcinoma simultaneously harbor another malignancy, but cancer-to-cancer metastasis is a rare event. We report the case of a 55-year-old man with prostatic adenocarcinoma that metastasized into a primary clear cell renal cell carcinoma, known to be the most frequent tumor-to-tumor recipient. The implications of this phenomenon with regard to diagnostic and therapeutic considerations are discussed, as well as hypotheses on pathogenetic mechanisms.
