Abstract

In this article, the degradation mechanisms of unfilled polydimethylsiloxane with different molecular weights are investigated under dry-band arcing using the inclined plane tracking and erosion test and material characterization techniques. Tracks of carbonaceous residue formed as byproducts of radical-based crosslinking are prevalent over erosion as the molecular weight increases. Erosion becomes dominant with polydimethylsiloxane that undergoes mainly depolymerization during degradation at lower molecular weights. Accordingly, tracking due to a progressive carbonaceous residue formed on the surface is the degradation pattern observed under the dry-band arcing for the polydimethylsiloxane with higher molecular weights (45 000 and 28 000 g/mol) during the inclined plane test (IPT), whereas erosion due to depolymerization is more evident on the polydimethylsiloxane surfaces with lower molecular weights (17 200 and 9400 g/mol). This study highlights the possibility to tune the tracking and erosion tendency of silicone rubber outdoor insulation by controlling the molecular weight of the organosiloxane base, without the sole reliance on fillers as commonly perceived.

Abstract

This paper investigates the effect of the test voltage level on the performance of silicone rubber in inclined plane tracking and erosion test. Silicone rubber composites, filled with either alumina tri-hydrate or ground silica to 30 wt% or 50 wt%, are tested in inclined plane tracking and erosion test under 2.5 kV, 3.5 kV, and 4.5 kV. The degradation patterns of the tested silicone rubber surfaces are found dependent on the test voltage level during the inclined plane tracking and erosion test, as the dry-band arcing on silicone rubber tends to form tracks under relatively mild test voltages and deep erosion under the critical test voltage. These findings confirm the importance of employing the critical voltage while evaluating the erosion resistance of silicone rubber in the inclined plane tracking and erosion test. Abstract

In this study, α-LiAlO2 was investigated for the first time as a Li-capturing positive electrode material to recover Li from aqueous Li resources. The material was synthesized using hydrothermal synthesis and air annealing, which is a low-cost and low-energy fabrication process. The physical characterization showed that the material formed an α-LiAlO2 phase, and electrochemical activation revealed the presence of AlO2* as a Li deficient form that can intercalate Li+. The AlO2*/activated carbon electrode pair showed selective capture of Li+ ions when the concentrations were between 100 mM and 25 mM. In mono salt solution comprising 25 mM LiCl, the adsorption capacity was 8.25 mg g−1, and the energy consumption was 27.98 Wh mol Li−1. The system can also handle complex solutions such as first-pass seawater reverse osmosis brine, which has a slightly higher concentration of Li than seawater at 0.34 ppm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
