Seasonal influenza poses significant health and economic challenges globally each year, particularly impacting the elderly population (aged ≥ 65 years) with increased rates of hospitalization, and mortality. The population of older adults is steadily increasing in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and is likely to increase even further. In addition, there is a high burden of chronic comorbidities in these countries like diabetes and obesity, which increases the likelihood of severe consequences of influenza infection. The GCC countries also host mass gathering events like Hajj, Umrah pilgrimage, Arba'een (nearby Iraq) pilgrimage, and international sports and business events, which further intensify the risk of outbreaks like influenza. These events facilitate the mixing of visitors from various countries. Thus, influenza activity in this North Hemisphere (NH) geography is usually present even before the availability of NH seasonal influenza vaccine. This is especially problematic for the elderly, whose protection from the previous year's immunization would have waned. Higher dosages of antigens or adjuvants have been used to improve immunogenicity in older people with superior vaccine effectiveness. Therefore, there is a compelling argument in favor of the implementation of high-dose seasonal influenza vaccines in the GCC countries to improve the protection of individuals aged 65 years and older against influenza infection and associated severe complications., (© 2024. Background: Eating disorders are complex illnesses with serious long-term consequences. They are linked to negative outcomes such as miscarriage, low birth weight, and other obstetric and postpartum difficulties. Our study in Muscat, Oman, examines the eating habits of pregnant women who consult primary care physicians. In this study, our aim is to identify key sociodemographic factors linked with eating disorders in Oman., Method: We used the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire to assess the potential for the presence of eating disorders. Chi-Square and Fisher's Exact tests were used to analyze relationships between improper eating behavior and independent variables., Results: The study showed that 1.6% of participants had a potential diagnosis of an eating disorder, with the most common inappropriate behavior being binge eating at a prevalence of 18.8%. A pre-gestational low Body Mass Index (BMI) was associated with a higher prevalence of binge eating during pregnancy. Additionally, we found that pregnant women who were working were more prone to self-induced vomiting. High BMI before pregnancy was significantly associated with various inappropriate eating behaviors, such as restraint behavior ( p = 0.000), shape concern ( p = 0.000), weight concern ( p = 0.040), eating ( p = 0.045), laxative use ( p = 0.020), and excessive exercise ( p = 0.043)., Conclusion: The study reveals a high prevalence of eating disorders in pregnancy. Less educated women exhibit higher laxative use, while working women show more instances of binge eating and self-induced vomiting. These findings emphasize the critical need to prioritize targeted interventions and support for vulnerable pregnant women.

Objectives: Despite a significant reduction in the global case incidence and mortality of malaria in the past 20 years, malaria continues to wreak havoc on people's health across the globe. Oman is a malaria-free country, meeting the World Health Organization's (WHO) criteria, having no indigenous malaria case documented since 2010, and maintaining that status for three consecutive years. Oman has a national strategy for prevention of re-establishment of malaria and to maintain their malaria-free status. In this paper, we explore Oman's malaria elimination progress and provide recommendations for accelerating and sustaining malaria free status using WHO malaria elimination strategies., Methods: Secondary data from the years 1976 to 2020 was extracted from official sources utilized to assess progress. A review and epidemiological analysis of malaria cases, species classification, and source of infection was conducted. The data and situation were compared to WHO malaria elimination pillars., Results: The number of malaria cases reported from 1976 to 2020 was 298 070, a decline from 1.6 to 0.1 per 1000 population. Of the 4415 cases reported between 1994-2004, 98.0% were classified as imported and 73.0% of people diagnosed with malaria were 20-34 years old. The number of autochthonous cases began to decline in 1994 from a high of 4415 cases (3.6 per 1000 population) to zero by 2004 with no deaths attributed to autochthonous malaria cases after the year 2000. By 2020, Plasmodium falciparum accounted for 86.0% of cases, P. vivax cases declined to 9.0% and P. malaria and P. ovale comprised the remaining 6.0% of case notifications., Conclusions: Oman achieved malaria elimination status in 2013. Background: Seasonal influenza vaccine can reduce the risk of influenza-associated hospitalizations and deaths among children. Given that parents are the primary decision makers, this study examined the parental attitude toward childhood influenza vaccine and identified determinants of vaccine hesitancy (VH) in the Eastern Mediterranean region (EMR)., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using an anonymous online survey in 14 EMR countries. Parents of children aged 6 months to 18 years were included. The Parent Attitude about Childhood Vaccines (PACV) was used to assess VH. Chi square test and independent t-test were used to test for association of qualitative and quantitative variables, respectively. A structural equations model (SEM) was used to identify direct and indirect determinants of parental VH., Results: Almost half of the parents were hesitant about vaccinating their children against influenza (50.8%). Parental VH was significantly higher among older mothers (37.06 ± 8.8 years, p  = 0.006), rural residents (53.6%, p  < 0.001), high-income countries residents (50.6%, p  < 0.001), and mothers with higher educational levels (52.1%, p  < 0.001). Parents of school-aged children (5-9 years) (55.6%, p  < 0.001), children free from any comorbidities (52.5%, p  < 0.001), children who did not receive routine vaccination at all (51.5%, p  = 0.03), children who were not vaccinated against COVID-19 (54.3%, p  < 0.001), in addition to parents who were not vaccinated against influenza (57.1%, p  < 0.001) were significantly associated with increased likelihood of VH. Parents who were depending on healthcare provider as a source of information regarding vaccines were less likely to report VH (47.9%, p < 0.001), meanwhile those who used social media as their source of health information showed a significantly higher VH (57.2%, p < 0.001). The SEM suggested that mother's age, residence, country income level, child gender, total number of children and source of information regarding vaccines had a direct effect on VH. Meanwhile, parents vaccinated against influenza, children completely or partially vaccinated with routine vaccines and children vaccinated against Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) had an indirect effect on VH., Conclusion: A high proportion of included parents were hesitant to vaccinate their children against seasonal influenza. Objectives: Dengue fever (DF) is the most common arthropod-borne viral illness with significant public health implications that can cause severe clinical symptoms and possibly death. We sought to determine the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients presented with DF to the Royal Hospital in a recent outbreak in Oman., Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study between 1 January and 18 April 2022, at the Royal Hospital, Oman, including all patients who presented with febrile illness and laboratory-confirmed DF. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the results., Results: The cohort included 58 patients with laboratory-confirmed DF, of whom 39 (67.2%) required admission. The overall mean age was 41.0±20.0 years. Over half (55.2%) were females and the majority (86.2%) were Omani citizens. Eighty-one percent of the patients were residents of Bawshar in Muscat governorate. Dengue virus 2 was the isolated serotype. Fever (98.3%), muscular aches and pains (55.2%), and headache (53.4%) were the most common symptoms on presentation. All patients except two had no travel history. The most common comorbidities were hypertension (29.3%) and diabetes mellitus (17.2%). Upon admission, the most prominent hematological and biochemical abnormalities were severe thrombocytopenia (31.0%) with platelet counts of < 50 000/mm 3 and hepatic impairment (15.5%). Antibiotics were prescribed to 27.6% of the patients. All patients improved clinically, and no deaths were reported during the study period., Conclusions: Fever and thrombocytopenia were the commonest presentations of DF. Vaccination to prevent influenza virus infection and to lessen its severity is recommended among healthcare workers (HCWs). Health professionals have a higher risk of exposure to viruses and could transmit the influenza virus to vulnerable patients who are prone to severe disease and mortality. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the levels of influenza vaccine acceptance and uptake as well as its determinants, among Jordanian HCWs over the last influenza season of 2021/2022. This study was based on a self-administered electronic survey that was distributed in March 2022. Psychological determinants of influenza vaccine acceptance and vaccine conspiracy beliefs were assessed using the previously validated 5C scale questionnaire (confidence, complacency, constraints, calculation and collective responsibility) and the vaccine conspiracy beliefs scale. The study sample comprised a total of 1218 HCWs: nurses ( n = 412, 33.8%), physicians ( n = 367, 30.1%), medical technicians ( n = 182, 14.9%), pharmacists ( n = 161, 13.2%) and dentists ( n = 87, 7.1%), among others. About two-thirds of the study sample expressed willingness to receive influenza vaccination if provided free of charge ( n = 807, 66.3%), whereas less than one-third were willing to pay for the vaccine ( n = 388, 31.9%). The self-reported uptake of the influenza vaccine in the last influenza season was 62.8%. The following factors were significantly associated with higher acceptance of influenza vaccination if provided freely, as opposed to vaccine hesitancy/rejection: male sex; physicians and dentists among HCW categories; higher confidence and collective responsibility; and lower complacency, constraints and calculation. Higher influenza vaccine uptake was significantly correlated with nurses and physicians among HCW categories, older age, a higher monthly income, higher confidence and collective responsibility, lower complacency and constraints and lower embrace of general vaccine conspiracy beliefs. The results of the current study can provide helpful clues to improve influenza vaccine coverage among HCWs in Jordan. Consequently, this can help to protect vulnerable patient groups and reserve valuable resources in healthcare settings. Psychological determinants appeared to be the most significant factors for vaccine acceptance and uptake, whereas the embrace of general vaccine conspiracy beliefs was associated with lower rates of influenza vaccine uptake, which should be considered in educational and interventional measures aiming to promote influenza vaccination.

Objectives: To evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and acceptance of COVID-19 vaccine among the general population of Oman, on the eve of the rollout of vaccination program in the country., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured and validated online questionnaire. Adults residing in Oman were invited to participate in the study between 22 and 24 December 2020. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine acceptability., Results: Of the total of 966 participants, the majority (612; 63.4%) were women. Most participants were younger than 40 years (572; 59.3%). Participants displayed good awareness about COVID-19 (946; 97.9%) and the global vaccine development initiatives (831; 86.0%). Only 265 (27.4%) participants were willing to get themselves vaccinated. The majority were either uncertain 365 (37.8%) or unwilling 336 (34.8%). The main driver of vaccine acceptance was to protect oneself and others (186/265; 70.0%). The main reasons given for vaccination hesitation/refusal were concerns over possible side-effects (505/701; 72.0%), safety concerns (386/701; 55.0%), and ineffectiveness of the vaccine (107/701; 15.3%)., Conclusions: On the eve of the first-ever rollout of COVID-19 vaccine in Oman in December 2020, the surveyed residents of the country expressed significant hesitancy to get themselves vaccinated. Participants' perceptions of risk of contracting COVID-19, their trust in vaccines, government, and their health system were important predictors of vaccine acceptance. These results enabled development of strategies to address such concerns to facilitate vaccine acceptance among the residents of Oman. Objectives: To describe the epidemiological characteristics of the first 69,382 patients with COVID-19 infection in Oman., Methods: A retrospective case series study of patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection in Oman from 24 February to 23 July 2020. The data were obtained from the National surveillance COVID-19 network., Results: The overall mean age of patients was 34 (± 14) years, 74% (n = 51,391) were males, 40,859 (59%) were Omani citizens, and 28,523 (41%) were foreign-born individuals. The most common symptoms at presentation were fever 50% (n = 34,600), cough 46% (n = 32,062), sore throat 46% (n = 31,953) and shortness of breath (SOB) 35% (n = 24,567). Overall, 8,960 (12.9%) patients required hospitalization with 1189 (13.3%) individuals requiring admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) and mechanical ventilation (MV). Patients hospitalized with COVID-19 infection were mostly Omani nationals and males between 30 and 39 years old (p < 0.001). The mortality rate was 7.7 per 100,000 population (n = 359) with rates of 9.4 (n = 278) and 4.8 (n = 81) deaths per 100,000 population in Omani nationals and foreign-born individuals, respectively. Females hospitalized with COVID-19 had a mean age of 64 (± 18) years versus a mean age of 55 (± 17) years in males. Mean age of patients with COVID-19-related mortality was 58 (± 18) years with significant differences in mean age between females and males 64 (± 18) versus 55 (± 17) years, respectively., Conclusions: Young Omani males accounted for the highest incidence of COVID-19 infection and hospitalization, while mortality rates were higher among males and the older age (> 50 years). Identifying the epidemiological characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19-infected patients is essential for developing targeted intervention strategies and preparing for the resurgence of anticipated second and third waves of this pandemic., (© 2021. Objective: This study investigates the key factors contributing to the dengue outbreak in Oman., Methods: Data on climate (e.g., temperature, humidity, wind pace), population traits (e.g., populace density), and vector dynamics (e.g., mosquito density) within the Seeb district of Oman from 2022 to 2023 were gathered. The partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was performed to study which variables affect dengue outbreaks., Results: The results indicate that climatic factors significantly affect the dengue vector (β = -0.361, p < 0.001) but do not directly impact the dengue outbreak. Population characteristics, however, have a more substantial impact on dengue transmission, with a total effect (β = 0.231, p = 0.002) being relatively higher than that of the vector itself (total effect: β = 0.116, p < 0.001)., Conclusions: Even with ongoing vector intervention efforts, the study underscores the need to include innovative public health interventions when considering environmental and demographic factors. Background: The increase in mucormycosis after COVID-19 pandemic has become a serious medical concern, leading to widespread complications and deaths worldwide. It is essential to identify the factors affecting mortality and associated complications. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the rise in mucormycosis incidence as an important challenge in southwest Iran during the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and methods: In this study, demographic and clinical information of COVID-19 patients, including age, gender, underlying medical conditions, etc., were extracted from patients' files. The analyzes 48 mucormycosis patients and 52 controls, utilizing measures of central tendency, dispersion, frequency, and odds ratios. Results: Our study revealed that the distribution of age, gender, and history of organ transplantation in the case and control groups was similar. Most mucormycosis patients were in the age group of 41 to 60 years (45.3%). Most study participants were males (28 individuals, 58.3%). The most prevalent underlying comorbidities among patients with mucormycosis were diabetes (93.8%) and hypertension (41.7%). Twenty-four individuals (50%) had a history of steroid use. In the control group, the most common underlying conditions were hypertension (32%), hyperlipidemia (21%), and diabetes (19%). Only 3 individuals (5.7%) in the control group had a history of steroid use, and an equal number (5.7%) had a history of other immunosuppressive drug use. Risk factors associated with an increased chance of mucormycosis included diabetes compared to nondiabetic individuals, with an odds ratio of 63, 95% confidence interval of 16.28-244; corticosteroid treatment with an odds ratio of 16.3, 95% confidence interval of 4.47-59.67; and treatment with other immunosuppressive drugs with an odds ratio of 6.06, 95% confidence interval of 1.60-22.89. Conclusion: Diabetes, corticosteroids, and immunosuppression increase the risk of COVID-19-associated mucormycosis risk. Avoiding corticosteroids in mild cases and closely monitoring blood sugar level can help to reduce of COVID-19-associated mucormycosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Dengue fever (DF) is one of the most prevalent arboviral infections worldwide. In Iran, the dengue-positive serological cases as well as the presence of the dengue vector Aedes aegypti have raised health concerns, highlighting the need to enhance the dengue surveillance system. This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of healthcare professionals (HCPs) regarding dengue fever in a large and high-risk region of southeastern Iran. Methods: A total of 492 HCPs were recruited using a multi-stage sampling method from May 2022 to July 2023. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Data analysis was done using independent t-tests, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), one-factor and multi-factor general linear models, and simple and multiple regression models. Results: About two-thirds (71%) of the participants did not receive any training on DF. A small percentage of participants were familiar with ovitrap (32.6%) and only 21.7% knew that destroying larval breeding sites could not eliminate the dengue vector. The knowledge of disease symptoms among HCPs was found to be lower in border areas compared to non-border areas (P = 0.018). However, the practice situation in HCPs working in border areas was better than in non-borders (P = 0.003). According to the multiple regression model, the most influential factors associated with knowledge, attitude, and practice were the type of healthcare facility and passing the DF training course. Additionally, education level, work experience, and gender were identified as other factors associated with it, respectively. Significant correlations were found between knowledge and practice (P < 0.001), indicating that higher knowledge led to better practice. Similarly, a positive attitude was significantly linked to better practice (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Regular, targeted, and continuous training courses are necessary to improve the knowledge level of HCPs, particularly those with lower education levels working in low-level health centers. Utilizing comprehensive dengue KAP studies to evaluate the status and impact of health education programs and identify gaps between knowledge and practice should be a research priority. Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant global challenges to healthcare systems, necessitating rapid education and training adaptations for frontline workers. In Qatar, Hamad Medical Corporation Ambulance Service (HMCAS) has transitioned to distance learning platforms to ensure the continuing professional development of paramedics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of these online learning platforms in meeting the educational needs of HMCAS paramedics in pre-hospital care. Methods: A retrospective observational study design was followed using an online survey. Data were collected using a validated tool focused on accessibility, feasibility, and perception of online learning during the pandemic. Descriptive and inferential statistics (ANOVA) were used to estimate differences in satisfaction scores across themes and analyze the data. Results: The findings revealed that HMCAS paramedics reported high levels of satisfaction (mean 3.93 out of 5) with online learning, citing its ability to meet their educational needs, enhance academic performance, and provide a safe learning environment. However, challenges such as poor internet connectivity, financial constraints, and lack of face-to-face interactions were identified as limitations. ANOVA results indicated that there was higher satisfaction with the online learning program, and that it met their patient care management expectations. Conclusion: This study highlights the potential of online learning to meet the educational needs of paramedics during a global health crisis. The findings suggest that online learning can be an effective and resilient approach to education and training in future public health emergencies with appropriate quality control measures, improved feedback mechanisms, and strategies to enhance interaction and engagement. Background: Dengue infection is a mosquito-borne, endemic viral disease, particularly in developing countries. Here, we report the results of the clinicodemographic, serologic profile and the monthly occurrence of a recent dengue fever outbreak in Puntland State (Somalia). Methodology: We analyzed the data of 956 dengue-suspected patients who were investigated using the rapid diagnostic testing (RDT) method for detecting NS1 (dengue virus non-structural protein) and IgM antibodies employing the SD Biosensor Dengue Dou NS Ag and IgM test kit (Germany) at the Puntland Public Health Referral Laboratory from November 21, 2022, to May 27, 2023. Results: We found that 118 cases were positive for dengue among the suspected patients enrolled in the present study. Of these cases, 76.2% were dengue NSI positive, 13.6% were dengue IgM positive, and 10.2% were both NSI and IgM positive. The number of females and males in the confirmed cases was equal, and most (48.3%) were aged 20 years or less. 43.1% of them lived in the Nugal region, particularly in Garowe. Clinically, fever was the most frequent symptom (88.9%). The cases peaked in December 2022 but dropped from January to March, with a slight rise in February, and then increased in April and May 2023. Conclusion: This study highlights the clinicodemographic characteristics, seroprevalence, and monthly occurrence of dengue in Puntland. We recommend improving vector control measures, enhancing case management, strengthening dengue surveillance, developing an early warning system, and conducting future studies to characterize the circulating strains. Background: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, Egypt was among the minor epidemic areas. COVID-19 has wide variations in the clinical presentation manifesting as a heterogeneous disease severity varying from mild, moderate, and severe to critical illness. Objective: This study aimed to identify the potential clinical, radiological, and laboratory characteristics and prognosis of the COVID-19 patients obtained during the first peak of this pandemic at a University Hospital in Egypt, and to provide a reference for the pandemic management in the subsequent peaks. Patients and methods: A single-center prospective study was done on patients with COVID-19 admitted to Fayoum University Hospital during the period from May to July 2020. All patients had full medical history taking, clinical examination, laboratory assessment, oxygen-saturation monitoring, chest computed tomography (CT), and reverse transcriptase-PCR testing. All the patients were treated with the treatment protocol accredited by the Egyptian Ministry of Health and accordingly disease outcome was determined. Results: The study included 162 COVID-19 patients, 80 (49.4%) had mild cases, 40 (24.7%) had moderate cases, and 26 (16.0%) and 16 (9.9%) had severe and critical cases, respectively. The median CT-severity score was 10 (3.75–11.25). Significantly high serum levels of C-reactive protein, D-dimer, lactate dehydrogenase, and ferritin levels were observed in severe cases (P <0.01 for all) in comparison with mild/moderate cases. By comparing died cases with other severe cases, the proportion of cases with CURB 65 score (comorbidity, confusion, urea, respiratory rate, blood pressure, and 65 years of age or older score) more than or equal to 4, PaO2/FiO2 less than 300, hypoxemia less than 85%, higher levels of ferritin, D-dimer, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, CT severity, and consolidation score were significantly higher in died cases than other severe cases. By regression analysis, among severe cases, predictors of death were the presence of comorbidity and increased consolidation size. Conclusion: All healthcare workers should understand the presentation of the disease, workup, and supportive care experienced from the first outbreak and offer an evidence-based management for succeeding outbreaks in our community. Background: In this study, we investigate the utilization of Instagram by public health ministries across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations to disseminate health-related information during the COVID-19 pandemic. With Instagram's visual-centric approach and high user engagement, the research aims to investigate its critical yet complex role in information dissemination amid a health crisis. Methods: To examine how Instagram communication strategies align with the CDC's Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication (CERC) framework, we employ the content analysis method. This approach helps to evaluate the effectiveness and challenges of employing Instagram for health communication within a region known for its significant social media usage. Results: Findings indicate that Instagram serves as a vital platform for the rapid dissemination of health information in the GCC, leveraging its visual capabilities and wide reach. The GCC ministries of health utilized Instagram to demonstrate a consistent and strategic approach to communicate essential COVID-19 related information. Kuwait and Bahrain were the most active of all the assessed ministries with respect to the number of engagement metrics (likes and comments). Most of the posts, as per the CERC framework, were informational and related to vaccine infection and death cases. The second most salient theme in line with the CERC framework was about promoting actions, followed by Instagram posts about activities, events, and campaigns. Background: The newly developed malaria vaccine called "R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine" showed a high safety and efficacy level, and Ghana is the first country to approve this new vaccine. The present study aimed to evaluate the rate of vaccine hesitancy (VH) towards the newly developed malaria vaccine among parents who currently have children who are not eligible for the vaccine but may be eligible in the near future. Additionally, the study aimed to identify the factors that could potentially influence VH. Methods: A cross-sectional survey using both online-based questionnaires and face-to-face interviews was conducted in Ghana from June to August 2023. The survey specifically targeted parents of ineligible children for vaccination, including those aged less than 5 months or between 3 and 12 years. The Parent Attitudes about Childhood Vaccination (PACV) scale was used to assess parental VH. Results: A total of 765 people participated in this study. Their median age was 36.0 years with an interquartile range of 31.0–41.0 years, 67.7% were females, 41.8% completed their tertiary education, 63.3% were married, 81.6% worked in non-healthcare sectors, and 59.7% reported that their monthly income was insufficient. About one-third (34.5%) of the parents were hesitant to give their children the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine. The following predictors were associated with VH: working in the healthcare sector (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 0.50; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.30–0.80; p = 0.005), having the other parent working in the healthcare sector (AOR = 0.54; 95% CI 0.30–0.94; p = 0.034), and not taking scheduled routine vaccinations (AOR = 1.90; 95% CI 1.27–2.84; p = 0.002). Conclusions: Addressing VH is crucial for optimizing R21/Matrix-M vaccine coverage in Ghana's malaria control strategy. With the spread of the Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the mass vaccination plan represents the primary weapon to control the infection curve. Unfortunately, vaccine hesitancy also spread out worldwide. This led to exploring the critical factors that prevent vaccination from improving the efficacy of vaccine campaigns. In the present study, the role of the Dark Triad (psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism) in vaccine hesitancy was investigated, considering the sequential mediating effects of conspiracy beliefs and risk perception. Via a cross-sectional design, the study was conducted with 210 participants surveyed using an online questionnaire to assess the Dark Triad, vaccine hesitancy, conspiracy beliefs, risk perception, and a set of demographic and socio-cultural control variables. Results showed that conspiracy beliefs and risk perception fully mediated the association between the Dark Triad and vaccine hesitancy. This finding suggested that albeit personality accounts for individual differences in human behaviour, vaccine hesitancy is also affected by irrational and false beliefs that, in turn, weaken the risk perception associated with COVID-19. Background: Exploring the clinical characteristics, and risk factors for severe complications among COVID19-positive patients has been helpful in identifying the most vulnerable communities to which public health practitioners should pay special attention. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics of COVID-19 patients, and risk factors for shortness of breath among COVID-19-positive patients in Chattogram, Bangladesh. Materials and Methods: Data were collected using a structured and facilitator-administered questionnaire among the COVID-19-positive patients (N = 408). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to explore the predictors of outcome variables. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 24.0. Results: It was revealed that at least one comorbidity was found among about half of the study participants, while the most prevalent symptoms of COVID-19 patients consisted of fever, cough, loss of taste, loss of smell, fatigue, and sore pain. In addition, Azithromycin is a more common treatment in our country. The multivariate logistic regression displays the COVID-19 patients aged more than 50 years (AOR = 2.05, 95% CI: 1.13-3.71) and respondents with cardiovascular disease (AOR = 4.60, 95% CI: 1.51-8.58) and the second wave of the corona pandemic (AOR = 1.78, 95% CI: 1.06-2.99) were reported as a risk factor for having shortness of breath among the virus-infected people. Conclusion: The findings explored an empirical and practical basis for exploring the risk factors for severe complications of COVID-19 patients. Background: Expenditure of healthcare services has been growing over the past decades. Lean and agile are two popular paradigms that could potentially contain cost and improve proficiency of the healthcare system. However no systematic review was found on leagilty in the healthcare research. This study aims at synthesizing the extant literature of leagility in the healthcare area to consolidate its potential and identify research gaps for future study in the field. Methods: A systematic literature review is conducted following the PRISMA checklist approach. Studies were searched in multiple databases. The selection of articles was executed by dual-scanning of two researchers to ensure quality of data and relevance to the topic. Scientific articles published between January 1999 and November 2023 concerning leagile healthcare are analysed using Microsoft Excel and VOSviewer (version 1.6.18). Results: Out of 270 articles identified from the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 24 were included in the review. A total of 11 target areas were identified in leagility applications in healthcare. Success and limiting factors of leagile healthcare were classified into macro and micro aspects and further categorized into six dimensions: policy, organization, human resources, marketing, operation management and technology. Moreover, four research gaps were revealed and suggestions were provided for future study. Conclusion: Leagility in the healthcare context is still being in its infancy. Few empirical validation was found in leagile healthcare literature. Further exploration into the application of theory in various sectors under the scope of healthcare is appealed for. Standardization and modularization, leadership support, skillfulness of professionals and staff training are the factors most frequently mentioned for a successful implementation of leagility in the healthcare sector. Background: Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus and is increasingly recognized as a serious public health concern worldwide. Our aim was to investigate the knowledge and attitudes of Chinese medical students regarding monkeypox. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 8,897 college students from China. An e-questionnaire was used to collect data on knowledge (17 items), attitudes (12 items), and baseline criteria. The relationships between a range of factors and knowledge and attitudes were studied using univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: A total of 79.33% of the study participants were female, 89.10% were of Han ethnicity, 72.50% were from rural areas, 50.39% were in their first year, and 80.65% were medical majors. A total of 50.88% had good knowledge of monkeypox, and 57.11% had a positive attitude towards monkeypox knowledge. Univariate analysis revealed that origin and major were the factors affecting the knowledge level of monkeypox among participants. Rural students had more knowledge of monkeypox than urban students, and nonmedical students had greater awareness of monkeypox than did medical students. Moreover, sex and grade were the factors influencing participants' attitudes towards monkeypox; men had more positive attitudes than women did, and senior students had more positive attitudes than junior students did. Multivariate analysis revealed that major and the origin of the students independently influenced the monkeypox knowledge of Chinese medical students, while sex, grade and monkeypox knowledge were significantly related to attitudes towards monkeypox. Conclusion: This study revealed that nearly half of the Chinese medical students had good knowledge and a positive attitude towards monkeypox. Student origin and major independently influenced the knowledge of Chinese medical students of monkeypox, while sex, grade and knowledge were independently related to the attitudes of Chinese medical students towards monkeypox. Mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs), like malaria and mosquito-borne viruses (MBVs), have caused the deaths of millions of people. Their threat resides in the variety of transmission modes that they possess, along with the wide selection of favorable hosts, such as humans, cattle, and rodents. MBDs are increasingly gaining a reputation as one of the most dangerous threats to public health in recent years. Mosquito numbers have been increasing in recent years as a result of multiple factors such as climate change and deforestation. This situation highlights the urgent need for actions to mitigate mosquito and MBD pathogen distributions. In the Middle East, many outbreaks of MBDs have been reported in the region. However, there are no reports of any endemic episodes of MBDs. The Middle East has faced many challenges over the years; however, the Syrian refugee crisis may be strongly related to the spread of infectious diseases. As mass gatherings and high-density populations are common features in the region, it is possible to understand why MBDs can spread easily. This review summarizes the state of MBDs in the Middle East, highlighting the different types of MBDs that have been reported in the region and discussing how to move forward with controlling their spread and limiting the risks they pose. According to the data reported by the electronic State Parties Self-Assessment Annual Reporting Tool (e-SPAR), the capacity to anticipate MBVs varies among Middle East countries. Therefore, the Middle East is on the frontline in the challenge to control a potential public health crisis. Objectives: Annual influenza vaccinations are recommended for asthma patients to prevent seasonal influenza and influenza-triggered asthma exacerbations. However, data on the beneficial effect of this vaccine on the frequency of asthma exacerbations are conflicting. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the influenza vaccine in terms of reducing the frequency of asthma-related exacerbations and upper respiratory tract infections among adult patients with asthma. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was performed from January to December 2018 in Muscat Governorate, Oman. A total of 466 patients attending 9 randomly selected primary health centres in Muscat Governorate were enrolled in the study and followed up for one year post vaccination. Results: Most of the patients were female (70.6%) and had moderate persistent asthma (42.9%). There were 203 patients (43.6%) in the vaccinated group and 263 patients (56.4%) in the non-vaccinated group. A proportion of patients in each group had allergic rhinitis (28.6% and 25.5%, respectively). The frequency of upper respiratory tract infections over the one-year follow-up period was significantly lower in the vaccinated group than in the non-vaccinated group (37.9% versus 73%; relative risk [RR]: 2.299; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.834-2.882; P <0.001); however, there was no significant difference in terms of the frequency of asthma exacerbations (41.9% versus 45.2%; RR: 0.925; 95% CI: 0.750-1.141; P >0.050). Conclusion: The influenza vaccine significantly reduces the frequency of upper respiratory tract infections over the following year. However, it does not significantly reduce the frequency of asthma exacerbations among Omani adults with asthma. Background: In 2003, the WHO aimed for a 75% or higher influenza vaccination rate among at-risk populations. However, this target was achieved in a few groups during selected seasons in some European countries, and never in Germany. Adults with underlying conditions (UCs) are a critical negleted group for influenza vaccination. This study aimed to identify data gaps in influenza burden and vaccination coverage among adults under 60 with UCs in Germany and bridge these gaps using real-world data. Material and methods: We conducted systematic research and analyses using German administrative and claims databases from June 2016 to April 2024. We report on epidemiology, direct care costs, indirect costs from work incapacity, vaccination coverage rates, and describe data gaps. Results: Influenza data for high-risk populations are limited. Comprehensive data on influenza epidemiology and vaccination coverage rates (VCR) is available, though with a delay in data availability. Before and after the pandemic, individuals aged 50-59 had the highest rates of influenza-related hospitalization and ICU admission compared to younger age groups. Across all age groups and seasons, individuals with UC experienced higher rates of medically attended influenza cases, hospitalizations, and healthcare costs, with those aged 35–59 being particularly vulnerable. Vaccine coverage was higher in adults aged 35–59 compared to those aged 18–24, and in females compared to males. Limitations: Discrepancies of vaccination status, limited data availability, and variations among the extent of UCs. Conclusion: In Germany, recent policy measures have mainly targeted those aged 60 and above. While this elderly population experiences the highest disease-related impact, influenza can also lead to substantial healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and costs in younger populations with chronic UCs; Facilitating vaccination access for this group, such as through pharmacies, is essential. Definition of quantifiable vaccination targets and measures to increase vaccination rates based on these targets are required. Introduction: Changing population demographics places a premium on optimizing older adult health. Vaccine-preventable diseases represent a substantial clinical and economic burden in older adults (≥65 years). Areas covered: This narrative review summarizes the adult immunization landscape in three countries; Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Türkiye, informed by literature searches; PubMed (23–27 September 2023) supplemented by citation tracking via Google Scholar). Existing vaccination recommendations and published data were reviewed to evaluate vaccine uptake, chiefly focusing on core adult vaccines (seasonal influenza, pneumococcal, and herpes zoster). Barriers to vaccine access and uptake were reviewed, and initiatives to improve recommended vaccine uptake in older (≥65 years) or otherwise high-risk adults are described. Expert Opinion: Uptake of recommended adult vaccines is low in all three countries. Receipt of annual seasonal influenza vaccine is typically below 50% in both older and at-risk younger adults; pneumococcal vaccination rates are even lower in eligible adults (<15% and often far lower), as is herpes zoster vaccine uptake (typically <5%). Low coverage is driven chiefly by low awareness of vaccine benefits, inconsistent recommendations, and vaccine hesitancy, together with often complex adult vaccine access pathways. Background: The global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in significant changes in the delivery of health care services such as attendance of scheduled outpatient hospital appointments. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on the rate and predictors of missed hospital appointment in the Sultanate of Oman. Methods: A retrospective single-centre analysis was conducted to determine the effect of COVID-19 on missed hospital appointments at various clinics at The Royal Hospital (tertiary referral hospital) in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman. The study population included scheduled face-to-face and virtual appointments between January 2019 and March 2021. Logistic regression models were used with interaction terms (post COVID-19) to assess changes in the predictors of missed appointments. Results: A total of 34, 3149 scheduled appointments was analysed (320,049 face-to-face and 23,100 virtual). The rate of missed face-to-face hospital appointments increased from 16.9% pre to 23.8% post start of COVID-19, particularly in early pandemic (40.5%). Missed hospital appointments were more frequent (32.2%) in virtual clinics (post COVID-19). Increases in missed face-to-face appointments varied by clinic (Paediatrics from 19.3% pre to 28.2% post; Surgery from 12.5% to 25.5%; Obstetrics & Gynaecology from 8.4% to 8.5%). A surge in the frequency of missed appointments was seen during national lockdowns for face-to-face and virtual appointments. Most predictors of missed appointments did not demonstrate any appreciable changes in effect (i.e., interaction term not statistically significant). Distance of patient residence to the hospital revealed no discernible changes in the relative effect pre and post COVID-19 for both face-to-face and virtual clinic appointments. Conclusion: The rate of missed visits in most clinics was directly impacted by COVID-19. The case mix of patients who missed their appointments did not change. Virtual appointments, introduced after start of the pandemic, also had substantial rates of missed appointments and cannot be viewed as the single approach that can overcome the problem of missing hospital appointments. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommended the concomitant administration (co-administration) of inactivated seasonal influenza and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines, encouraging the practice for the 2021–2022 flu season. This study aimed to assess the acceptance of simultaneously receiving the seasonal influenza vaccine (SIV) and the COVID-19 vaccine in a single administration to reduce vaccine rejection towards the COVID-19 vaccination. An online-based cross-section survey was conducted from 1 September to 9 November 2022, in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) through distributing the survey on different social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and WhatsApp. We used the multi-level model to assess the variation of vaccine countries across EMR countries. In total, 3300 participants were included in this survey from 11 countries distributed in the EMR. More than one-third (40.7%) were aged 18–25 years, 60.6% were females, 54.0% had a university degree, 43.1% had previous COVID-19, and 41.9% had relatives or friends who died from COVID-19. In total, 43.3% accepted this combination because it is less costly (9%), safer (18%), more effective (17%), and has fewer doses (19%). Rejection of this combination was due to fear of side effects (31%), and no studies have been published on their effects (31%). There was a significant difference across countries, which accounted for 6% of the variance in the log-odds of accepting the combined vaccination. Multi-level analysis revealed that being male, African and losing a family member or friend from COVID-19 increased the acceptance of the theoretical combined vaccines. Additionally, the number of doses taken of the COVID-19 and influenza vaccines separately significantly affected the combined vaccine acceptance. However, previous COVID-19 infection and older age reduced the odds of accepting the combined vaccines. Occupational level, social status and educational level didn't significantly affect the acceptance odds. We can conclude that combining SIV and COVID-19 vaccines in one shot increased the overall acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines among vaccine rejectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Vaccination against severe acute respiratory distress syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has gained recognition as a crucial strategy to prevent and reduce the risk of infection, including emerging variants, due to its proven safety, immunogenicity, and effectiveness. This study aimed to evaluate the vaccination hesitancy (VH) among Egyptian parents towards SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, specifically focusing on parents with chronically ill children. Method: A multicentered cross-sectional survey was conducted at outpatient clinics of El-Raml Pediatric Hospital, Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) in Alexandria, Alexandria Main University Hospital for Maternity and Children (AMUH), Al-Galaa Teaching Hospital, General Organization for Teaching Hospitals and Institutes (GOTHI) Cairo, and Pediatric Department, Menoufia University Hospital from May 1st till December 15th, 2022. Parents of children with chronic diseases were recruited using a simple random sampling technique to respond to the validated Arabic version of parental attitudes about childhood vaccination (PACV). Results: In this study, we enrolled 527 caregivers, 55.4% of them were aged 30–39 years old, 85.2% were females, and 46.9% had chronic diseases. Commonly mentioned information sources included television and radio (69.8%), and social media (35.3%). Among the parents studied, 59.6% refused vaccination. The predictors of the PACV score were governorate, Menoufia (β = 11.30, 95%CI [5.32, 17.27], p < 0.001), study setting, Menoufia University Hospital (β = -20.07, 95%CI [-25.40, -14.75] and El-Raml Hospital (β = -10.74, 95%CI [-14.50, -6.98], p < 0.001), income; not enough and loans repaid (β = 3.18, 95%CI [0.54, 5.82], p = 0.018) and not enough and loans not repaid (β = 3.57,95%CI [0.08, 7.07], p = 0.045). Conclusions: The study reveals geographic and economic factors as predictors of PACV, and emphasizes the need for region-specific interventions and financial barriers to improve vaccine acceptance and child well-being. Background: Prompt diagnosis and treatment of leprosy are crucial for preventing the disease's spread as well as for avoiding negative medical and social effects and reducing the disease's burden. The likelihood of nerve damage and subsequent disability rises as the length of the diagnostic delay. We aimed to explore the challenges of health professionals faced regarding their involvement in early leprosy case detection strategies. Methods: The study employed a qualitative, descriptive and phenomenological explorative research design to answer the research questions. By the use of non-probability purposive sampling, research participants were identified. During the study, in-depth interviews were conducted to gather information regarding the experiences of health workers (medical doctors, public health officers, clinical nurses, health centre heads and regional and Woreda district health office technical and programme experts) and health extension workers. To analyse the qualitative data, inductive thematic analysis techniques were used. For analysis, open code software version 4.0 was used. The data transcription, coding, display, reduction (theme) and interpretation of the discovered results were the processes undertaken for the analysis. Result: The findings of the study revealed that leprosy prevention and control programmes are still problematic. Themes that emerged from the data gleaned from the health workers included: lack of the existence of practice-oriented training, Integration of TB and leprosy training, lack of focus or other competing health priorities, Inadequate supportive supervision of health facilities, Multiple tasks for health workers, poor coordination and communications, lack of motivation in health workers, disruption in treatment, and Importance of training related to leprosy. Conclusion: Strengthening comprehensive leprosy training for health workers, carrying out efficient and thorough contact tracing, enhancing monitoring, supervision, assessment and surveillance, boosting managerial skills, lobbying political commitment, and motivating healthcare workers may help in early detection of leprosy cases strategies. This study investigates the intricate relationship between exposure to information sources, trust in these sources, conspiracy and misinformation beliefs, and COVID-19 anxiety among 509 Omani citizens aged 11 to 50, representing 11 governorates. Employing structural equation modeling, we not only examine these associations but also explore how trust and COVID-19 anxiety act as moderating variables in this context. Additionally, we delve into demographic factors such as age group, educational level, gender, and place of residence (governorate) to discern potential variations. Our findings reveal that trust in health experts is inversely related to belief in conspiracy theories, while trust in health experts negatively correlates with exposure to conspiracy and misinformation. Intriguingly, trust in health experts exhibits divergent effects across governorates: it diminishes conspiracy and misinformation beliefs in some regions but not in others. Exposure to personal contacts and digital media, on the other hand, is associated with heightened beliefs in misinformation and conspiracy theories, respectively, in select governorates. These distinctions may be attributed to proximity to Muscat, the capital city of Oman, where various media outlets and policy-making institutions are situated. Furthermore, lower educational attainment is linked to greater belief in conspiracy and misinformation. Females reported higher levels of conspiracy theory beliefs and COVID-19 anxiety while no significant differences were detected in misinformation beliefs. This study sheds light on the intricate dynamics of misinformation and conspiracy theories in the context of COVID-19 in Oman, highlighting the pivotal roles of trust and COVID-19 anxiety as moderating factors. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been declared an ongoing health threat, especially infections among children. We compared and updated the disease burden of HBV infection and the effectiveness of vaccination among children younger than 5 years to offer indications for hepatitis B prevention across the world. The country‐level data on the prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), the coverages of hepatitis B vaccine birth‐dose (HepB‐BD), three‐dose series (HepB3), income level, population density/size, and human development index were collected from open access databases including WHO, UNICEF, and World Bank. Comparison of the prevalence of HBsAg under 5 years old between 2015 and 2019 based on vaccination coverages was conducted by the gamma generalized linear mixed model. Globally, more than 6.3 million HBV infections were estimated in children under 5 years in 2019, compared to 10.1 million in 2015 within the 179 countries involved. The pooled average prevalence of HBsAg among children younger than 5 years decreased from 1.4% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.1–1.8) to 0.9% (95% CI: 0.7–1.2). The rate difference or rate ratio was −0.5% (95% CI: −0.6% to −0.3%) or 0.51(95% CI: 0.44–0.58), respectively. Countries from the African region or with lower income/population density/human development indexes bore the most significant disease burden of hepatitis B. Higher coverages of hepatitis B vaccine birth‐dose or primary series correlated with significant HBsAg prevalence decreases and much‐decreased ratio, independently. Hepatitis B prevention among children under 5 years has significantly been achieved while remaining the most life‐threatening disease burden, unequally distributed worldwide. Background and Aim: In recent years, the coronavirus disease has caused many problems in the field of health, and contracting this disease led to the hospitalization, death, and disability of many people. One of the ways to control this disease in Iran is the implementation of Shahid Soleimani's plan with the aim of reducing the hospitalization rate, death, and disability, supporting groups at risk. This research was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of Shahid Soleimani's plan in controlling the coronavirus disease. Methods: The present study is a quantitative research. According to the purpose of the research, it is in the category of applied research, and in terms of the research design, it is one of the cross-sectional studies that was carried out between 2020 and 2022. The population of this study included healthcare workers in the Corona sector in 5 parts of the North, South, East, West, and Central of the country, and 360 people were selected from among them using cluster sampling. The research tool is a standard questionnaire whose validity and reliability were determined based on Cronbach's alpha of 0.88. Data analysis was done using SPSS-24 and AMOS-20 software. Results: The results of standard coefficient and t statistic (R2 = 0.34, t = 5.28) and the results of structural equation modeling (P<0.001, β≤0.3) showed that the provision of primary health care services on the control of Corona in Iran had a direct impact. Conclusion: Shahid Soleimani's plan, with public participation and inter-sectoral coordination in the care, support, and monitoring areas, by carrying out measures such as vaccination, and early identification of patients, led to a reduction in hospitalization, mortality and in general the management and control of COVID-19. Background: Dengue is an emerging major infectious disease which causes frequent outbreaks affecting millions. The complex interplay between virus serotype, host immune response and environmental factor set a series of changes in dengue presentation over the years. Materials and method: This was a cross-sectional, observational study conducted on 100 diagnosed dengue patients attending a tertiary teaching hospital. The study participants were divided into severe and non-severe categories and compared in terms of their symptoms, severity and lab findings. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS. Result: Majority of the study participants were younger. Female participants were more than male. Apart from fever, headache was found to be the commonest symptom in general. Epistaxis and melaena were significantly higher among severe group than non-severe peers. Gastrointestinal symptoms were frequently present among both groups. Conclusion: Most of the cases of dengue patient didn't suffer from life threatening infection but when the infection is severe, bleeding manifestation can be a predictor of the onset of critical illness. Background: Existing literature that examines the Hikikomori-like idiom of distress (HLID) initially labelled this phenomenon as a culture-bound syndrome. However, the increasing number of reports from other parts of the world suggest that HLID could instead be a culture-reactive idiom of distress, originating from biopsychosocial disequilibrium and cultural upheaval. The impact of imposed social withdrawal due to the Coronavirus 2 severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic on the growing prevalence of HLID has not yet been adequately explored. Aims: The first objective is to examine the factorial validity of the 25-item Hikikomori Questionnaire (HQ-25) in Oman. Second, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of HLID following the lifting of SARS-COV-2 restrictions in the Arabian Gulf country of Oman. The third related objective is to examine factors associated with the variation of HLID. Methods: This cross-sectional online survey was widely distributed across the diverse socio-demographic population residing in Oman. After the validation of the questionnaire and the factorial validity, the Arabic version of HQ-25 was used to explore the prevalence and factors associated with HLID. Results: A total of 1529 participants were included in the study (response rate = 76.5%), of whom 44% (n = 673) expressed HLID. We randomly split it into half, one for exploratory factor analysis (EFA) (n = 764) and the other half for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) (n = 765). From the EFA results, a three-factor model was found for the Omani version of HQ-25, which represented 52.87% of the variance with good internal reliability (Overall Cronbach's: 0.92; Socialisation: 0.92; Isolation: 0.84; Emotional support: 0.73). The CFA results report acceptable goodness-of-fit indices (χ2/df = 17.92, p <.001; CFI = 0.90; TLI = 0.95; RMSEA = 0.04, 95% CI 0.02–0.07; SRMR = 0.05) of the three-factor model of the collected samples. All 1529 data were used in the respondents. The results of the logistic regression showed that married marital status (OR = 1.51, 95% CI: 1.12–2.03, p = 0.007), older age (OR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.95–0.99, p = 0.008), living in an urban area (OR = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.56–0.91, p = 0.006), unemployed occupational status (OR = 1.72, 95% CI: 1.30–2.88, p <.001), screen time (7+ hours vs. <4 hours: OR = 4.50, 95% CI: 3.16–6.41, p <.001; 4–7 hours vs. <4 hours: OR = 2.10, 95% CI: 1.61–2.70, p <.001), history of mental illness (OR = 3.70, 95% CI: 2.29–5.91, p <.001), and adverse childhood experiences (OR = 2.60, 95% CI: 2.03–3.20, p <.001) were significant risk factors for HLID. Conclusion: The factorial validity of the HQ-25 performed in this study appears to mirror the previously reported 3-factor structures. Some of the associated factors appear to support and, conversely, dissent from the findings of previous studies. These are discussed in terms of the attributions of the SARS-COV-2 pandemic, demographic trends in Oman, and sociocultural factors specific to the region of interest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In Sarawak, 252 300 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases have been recorded with 1 619 fatalities in 2021, compared to only 1 117 cases in 2020. Since Sarawak is geographically separated from Peninsular Malaysia and half of its population resides in rural districts where medical resources are limited, the analysis of spatiotemporal heterogeneity of disease incidence rates and their relationship with socio-demographic factors are crucial in understanding the spread of the disease in Sarawak. Methods: The spatial dependence of district-wise incidence rates is investigated using spatial autocorrelation analysis with two orders of contiguity weights for various pandemic waves. Nine determinants are chosen from 14 covariates of socio-demographic factors via elastic net regression and recursive partitioning. The relationships between incidence rates and socio-demographic factors are examined using ordinary least squares, spatial lag and spatial error models, and geographically weighted regression. Results: In the first 8 months of 2021, COVID-19 severely affected Sarawak's central region, which was followed by the southern region in the next 2 months. In the third wave, based on second-order spatial weights, the incidence rate in a district is most strongly influenced by its neighboring districts' rate, although the variance of incidence rates is best explained by local regression coefficient estimates of socio-demographic factors in the first wave. It is discovered that the percentage of households with garbage collection facilities, population density and the proportion of male in the population are positively associated with the increase in COVID-19 incidence rates. Conclusion: This research provides useful insights for the State Government and public health authorities to critically incorporate socio-demographic characteristics of local communities into evidence-based decision-making for altering disease monitoring and response plans. Policymakers can make well-informed judgments and implement targeted interventions by having an in-depth understanding of the spatial patterns and relationships between COVID-19 incidence rates and socio-demographic characteristics. Background: Mycobacterium tuberculosis causes tuberculosis (TB), the most lethal infectious disease in the world that affects people of all ages. The aim of our study was to estimate the prevalence of TB in the Gujarat state (India). Material and methods: This was a retrospective study conducted at the Pandit Dindayal Upadhyay Government Medical Hospital (PDUGMH) in Gujarat between 2018 and 2022. Results: A total of 5624 TB notification records were reviewed from the TB & Chest Department of the PDUGMH. 5207 of them reported TB-positive results, majority of which concerned pulmonary TB (57.27%, n = 2982). 3586 (68.87%) of the TB-positive patients were male and 1621 (31.13%) were female. The most group most affected by TB was 15-29 years of age, with a high peak in 2019. Amongst the TB-positive patients, 215 suffered from diabetes and 454 were HIV-positive. Majority of patients with an infected lymph node suffered from extrapulmonary TB. Rifampicin-resistant TB was observed in 0.8% (n = 42) of patients and 3 patients were treated with the longer oral regimen for fluoroquinolone-resistant multi-drug resistant TB (0.1%). Conclusions: Our findings indicate that during 2018-2022, patients treated at PDUGMH had a TB prevalence of 92.59%, with a corresponding rate of multidrug-resistant TB standing at 1.48%. Background Randomized controlled trials evaluated monoclonal antibodies for the treatment (Study 2067) and prevention (Study 2069) of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Household contacts of the infected index case in Study 2067 were enrolled in Study 2069 and prospectively followed; these cohorts provided a unique opportunity to evaluate correlates of transmission, specifically viral load. Methods This post hoc analysis was designed to identify and evaluate correlates of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission, adjusting for potential confounding factors related to source SARS-CoV-2 viral load and risk of SARS-CoV-2 acquisition in this population. Correlates of transmission were evaluated in potential transmission pairs (any infected household member plus susceptible household contact). Results In total, 943 participants were included. In multivariable regression, 2 potential correlates were determined to have a statistically significant (P <.05) association with transmission risk. A 10-fold increase in viral load was associated with a 40% increase in odds of transmission; sharing a bedroom with the index participant was associated with a 199% increase in odds of transmission. Conclusions In this prospective, post hoc analysis that controlled for confounders, the 2 key correlates for transmission of SARS-CoV-2 within a household are sharing a bedroom and increased viral load, consistent with increased exposure to the infected individual. Objectives: Economic evaluations of vaccines should accurately represent all relevant economic and health consequences of vaccination, including losses due to adverse events following immunization (AEFI). We investigated to what extent economic evaluations of pediatric vaccines account for AEFI, which methods are used to do so and whether inclusion of AEFI is associated with study characteristics and the vaccine's safety profile. Methods: A systematic literature search (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Systematic Reviews and Trials, Database of the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination of the University of York, EconPapers, Paediatric Economic Database Evaluation, Tufts New England Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Registry, Tufts New England Global Health CEA, International Network of Agencies for Health Technology Assessment Database) was performed for economic evaluations published between 2014 and 29 April 2021 (date of search) pertaining to the five groups of pediatric vaccines licensed in Europe and the United States since 1998: the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines, the meningococcal vaccines (MCV), the measles-mumps-rubella-varicella (MMRV) combination vaccines, the pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV) and the rotavirus vaccines (RV). Rates of accounting for AEFI were calculated, stratified by study characteristics (e.g., region, publication year, journal impact factor, level of industry involvement) and triangulated with the vaccine's safety profile (Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices [ACIP] recommendations and information on safety-related product label changes). The studies accounting for AEFI were analyzed in terms of the methods used to account for both cost and effect implications of AEFI. Results: We identified 112 economic evaluations, of which 28 (25%) accounted for AEFI. This proportion was significantly higher for MMRV (80%, four out of five evaluations), MCV (61%, 11 out of 18 evaluations) and RV (60%, nine out of 15 evaluations) compared to HPV (6%, three out of 53 evaluations) and PCV (5%, one out of 21 evaluations). No other study characteristics were associated with a study's likelihood of accounting for AEFI. Vaccines for which AEFI were more frequently accounted for also had a higher frequency of label changes and a higher level of attention to AEFI in ACIP recommendations. Nine studies accounted for both the cost and health implications of AEFI, 18 studies considered only costs and one only health outcomes. While the cost impact was usually estimated based on routine billing data, the adverse health impact of AEFI was usually estimated based on assumptions. Discussion: Although (mild) AEFI were demonstrated for all five studied vaccines, only a quarter of reviewed studies accounted for these, mostly in an incomplete and inaccurate manner. We provide guidance on which methods to use to better quantify the impact of AEFI on both costs and health outcomes. BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) was notified by China on December 31, 2019, of a pneumonia outbreak severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus-19 virus infection in Wuhan. This outbreak was declared by the WHO from the Public Health Emergency of International Concern to formal declaration as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. Because the public health measures like lockdown, the eye care delivery system was markedly impacted. The aim of this study was to find out if any pattern change of red eye cases among patients who attended eye accident and emergency (A and E) in a tertiary care hospital during COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 compared to 2019 and 2018. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cohort retrospective study which included all patients who presented to eye A and E clinic with red eye from March 1 to July 31 in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Data were analyzed using statistical tools in the SPSS software. Furthermore, the clinical records of 578 inpatients with proven COVID-19 were reviewed for any red eye problem. RESULTS: Out of 7895 eye patients attended eye A and E clinic during March-July of 2018, 2019, and 2020, 1573 (19.9%) patients had red eye. Males were slightly dominant with 59%, and unilateral cases were the majority among them. The most common causes of red eye in 2018 and 2019 were injury, conjunctivitis, and keratitis; whereas in 2020, a clear dominance of injury and keratitis cases was found. Only 10 (2.03%) patients out of the 493 outpatients with red eye during the 5-month period in 2020 reported a prior contact to a COVID-19 positive case; of whom nine patients had conjunctivitis, and one had a right eye open globe injury. Of the 578 inpatients with proven COVID-19, only 1 (0.17%) patient had red eye with the diagnosis of conjunctivitis. CONCLUSION: There was relatively increased number of adults reporting with red eye in 2020. Eye injuries were the most common among all years, followed by conjunctivitis and keratitis. Ocular problems, however, might be a primary or secondary COVID-19 complaint and seem to be relatively uncommon in COVID-19 individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A retrospective study evaluating the prevalence of loss of smell, loss of taste and oral manifestations was carried out by framing an online questionnaire and disseminated among the health care workers including medical and dental students, who were afflicted with COVID-19. The objective of this study was to find out the prevalence of the loss of smell, loss of taste (LOST) and oral manifestations and whether these (LOST & oral manifestations) can be the premonitory manifestations and also whether these can predict the prognosis of COVID-19 disease. Our study showed that the loss of smell, loss of taste and dry mouth did occur before the other symptoms considerably in the COVID-19 infected health workers. All the infected health workers were in home quarantine phase and not hospitalized during the occurrence of COVID-19. The loss of smell, loss of taste and oral manifestations can be the prodromal signs of COVID-19 and may be used as a screening tool to predict the severity of the disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Presently, Gulf Cooperation Council countries are lagging in the generation of real-world data and use of real-world evidence for patient-centered care compared with the global average. In a collaborative effort, experts from multiple domains of the healthcare environment from the Gulf Cooperation Council countries came together to present their views and recommended key action points for the generation of robust real-world data and leveraging real-world evidence in the countries. The opinions of the experts are presented, along with existing barriers to the effective generation of real-world evidence in the countries. The Gulf Cooperation Council countries are undergoing transformative changes paving the way for improved healthcare measures; however, the challenges in generating reliable, robust, accessible, and secure real-world evidence are persistent. Hence, ongoing public–private engagements, as well as collaborations between regulators, policymakers, healthcare professionals, insurance and pharmaceutical companies, and patients, are warranted. A few notable examples of real-world evidence studies highlighting the benefits of real-world evidence for gaining valuable insights into patient-centric decision making are also discussed.
