Abstract

BackgroundBorderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental disorder that affects attitudes toward the body. However, whether this condition also affects body schema and perceptual body image remains unclear. Previous questionnaire-based studies found dissatisfaction with one's body in patients with BPD. In addition to attitudinal body image, our study investigates whether body schema and perceptual body image are disturbed in patients with BPD.MethodOur study included 31 patients diagnosed with BPD (25 women) and 30 healthy individuals (19 women) (Mage = 29 for both groups). The SCID-5-PD interview was used to determine personality disorder. Attitudinal body image was measured using the Body Attitude Test (BAT) factors. Body schema and perceptual body image were measured by two conditions of a body representation task, the body portraying method (BPM).ResultsBPD patients achieved higher scores in all three BAT factors and were more susceptible to misinformation in both conditions of BPM. Based on the results, BPD patients appear to have more negative attitudes toward their bodies and worse perceptual body image and body schema.ConclusionThe novel finding of our study is that, besides the previously found attitudinal dissatisfaction with the body, individuals with BPD also show disturbances at the levels of body schema and perceptual body image. Our findings concerning disturbances in body schema and perceptual body need further research into their etiological factors and provide new therapeutic targets for the treatment of BPD.

Abstract

Background: Recurrent upper airway obstruction during sleep is a common feature of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Risk factors for the development of OSA include obesity, male gender and smoking. In addition, anatomical factors contribute to the development of the disease; however, the heritability of the anatomical structures that determine upper airway narrowing is poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate the background of anatomical structures associated with upper airway narrowing in discordant monozygotic (MZ) twin pairs. Methods: 33 adult MZ twin pairs (median age and Q1-Q3: 50 (42–56) years) from the Hungarian Twin Registry underwent head and neck MR (Philips Ingenia 1.5 T). T1- and T2-weighted images in sagittal, coronal and axial planes were used to measure cephalometric, soft tissue and adipose tissue structures. In addition, the twin pairs underwent carotid and femoral ultrasound scans (Samsung RS85) and full-body composition measurements (OMRON BF500). The analysis of discordant MZ twins for anatomical markers in relation to clinical background, blood test, vascular ultrasound and body composition results was performed using a paired permutation test. Results: We found a significant association between parapharyngeal adipose tissue area and body weight, waist circumference and metabolism (p < 0.05). Abstract

Introduction: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disorder characterized by the repetitive collapse of the upper airways during sleep, most likely in the oropharyngeal region. Anatomical factors significantly contribute to the disease development; however, the heritability of the upper airway dimensions, which lead to the collapsibility of the upper airways, is less known. In the current study, we aimed to quantify the impact of heritable and environmental factors on the upper airway dimensions in twins using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods: We completed head and neck MRI imaging on 110 (66 monozygotic and 44 dizygotic, age median and Q1–Q3: 53 (44–63.75) years) adult twins from the Hungarian Twin Registry. We completed cephalometric, soft tissue and fatty tissue space measurements on T1- and T2-weighted images in sagittal, coronal and axial planes. For the analysis of the genetic and environmental, the determination of the measured parameters was performed with an ACE twin statistical model. Results: We found a strong genetic determination in the anteroposterior diameter of the tongue and the thickness of the submental fatty tissue of the neck. Other parameters of the tongue, soft palate and uvula have shown moderate heritability, while we found strong environmental determination in the thickness of the parapharyngeal fatty tissue, the thickness of the pharyngeal wall, and the smallest diameter of the posterior upper airways. Conclusion: Our twin study can help better understand the genetic and environmental background of anatomical structures involved in the development of sleep apnea.

Abstract

Background: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Alterations in the gut microbiome have been implicated in the development of cardiovascular disease and may potentially link OSA to its cardiovascular consequences. However, only one study to date has investigated gut microbiomes in adult patients with OSA. Methods: 19 patients with OSA and 20 non-OSA controls participated in the study. Following a diagnostic sleep study, blood was collected for metabolic profiling, and the subjects provided a stool sample for microbiome analysis. The gut microbiome was investigated using the 16S ribosomal RNA method. Results: Patients with OSA had a higher relative abundance of the Proteobacteria phylum (p = 0.03), Gammaproteobacteria class (p = 0.01), Lactobacillae family (p = 0.02), Lactobacillus (p = 0.03), and Roseburia genus (p = 0.03), and a lower abundance of the Actinobacteria phylum (p = 0.03). The abundance of Proteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Lactobacillae, and Lactobacillus were related to disease severity and dyslipidaemia (all p < 0.05), whilst the abundance of Proteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria was also related to hypertension and cardiovascular disease (all p < 0.05). However, following adjustment for relevant confounders only the association between OSA and Actinobacteria remained significant (p = 0.04). Conclusions: Obstructive sleep apnoea is associated with only subtle changes in gut microbiome. Further studies should investigate gut dysbiosis in OSA.

Abstract

The structure of light-to-medium mass nuclei is crucial to understand exotic phenomena in nuclear structure, including the appearance of molecular effects in light nuclei and their impact in nuclear astrophysics. In this paper, a new experiment to probe one-proton spectroscopic factors of bound and unbound states in the sd-nucleus 33Cl is discussed. The experiment exploits the reaction 32S(3He, d)33Cl* at 9.68 MeV bombarding energy. This reaction is suitable to probe the single-particle structure of 33Cl states with respect to the population of 1d 3/2, 1f 7/2 and 2p 3/2 shells. Crucial aspects of the investigation are the use of an enriched, high-purity, 32S target and a new generation hodoscope with improved angular resolution, allowing to obtain high-precision angular distribution of the differential cross section in a broad angular range. Results are interpreted by means of finite-range DWBA and coupled-channel calculations.

19 pags., 16 figs., 8 tabs., We present the design, prototype developments and test results of the new time-of-flight detector (ToFD) which is part of the R3B experimental setup at GSI and FAIR, Darmstadt, Germany. The ToFD detector is able to detect heavy-ion residues of all charges at relativistic energies with a relative energy precision σΔE/ ΔE of up to 1% and a time precision of up to 14 ps (sigma). Abstract

Plus que l’Occident, longtemps partagé entre haine et fascination, l’Inde a l’amour du théâtre, sans doute parce que s’y condense sa vision du monde et de l’être dans le monde. Qu’est le monde en effet et celui, homme ou dieu, qui s’y inscrit fugitivement, sinon la création de la māyā, l’Illusion cosmique ? Sur le tréteau de l’univers, Śiva, le Nitarāja, prince et modèle des acteurs, est le dieu qui joue, souverainement. Théâtre indien, donc, ou plutôt, tant l’objet est divers, ambigu et labile, théâtres indiens, fussent-ils réels ou rêvés, de Java ou du romantisme français. De l’Inde à l’Occident, du passé, mythique ou historique, au présent, les dix-huit textes de ce volume voudraient, multipliant les points de vue, rendre compte de ce pluriel. Philologie, analyse littéraire, histoire, sociologie, ethnologie, témoignage de praticiens, poésie même : les approches sont nombreuses, et font leur place à la scène du rituel, comme à la réflexion esthétique et philosophique. Impossible en effet d’ignorer la question fondamentale : celle des rapports du théâtre et de la réalité, avec pour corollaire les raisonnements sur les registres d’incarnation — la figuration théâtrale et la possession —, lesquels, loin de circonscrire fermement les domaines du théâtre et du rituel, contribueraient plutôt à en brouiller les contours puisque la possession elle-même est susceptible d’être jouée. De ces glissements et recouvrements incessants naît un trouble qui est peut-être aussi la condition du plaisir esthétique comme celle de l’accès, au-delà de l’apparence, à une réalité plus haute. L’illusion est la fin du théâtre et sa vérité, son enjeu. Le rideau, « cette toile qui sépare du mystère », comme dit Mallarmé, en est, avant l’acteur même, le premier signe.

Abstract

A feasibility study of two-neutron transfer reactions, using 12C and 19F targets, was performed. In this experiment, a 6He beam at 20 MeV incident energy was delivered by the RIBRAS facility. The main goal of this work was to test the RIBRAS system, operated in a single-solenoid mode, to investigate (6He,α) reactions in light nuclei. The excitation function of the 14C nucleus, populated by the 12C(6He,α) reaction, was extracted from the data. Evidence of nn-transfer reactions populating the ground state and the first 0 1 + state in 14C were observed. However, the present spectrum might have contribution from other reaction channels such as the 6He breakup. Future experiments with the RIBRAS dual-solenoid mode will improve the quality of the data by reducing a significant amount of background.
