Abstract

The microscopic mechanism of heavy band formation, relevant for unconventional superconductivity in CeCoIn$_5$ and other Ce-based heavy fermion materials, depends strongly on the efficiency with which $f$ electrons are delocalized from the rare earth sites and participate in a Kondo lattice. Replacing Ce$^{3+}$ ($4f^1$, $J=5/2$) with Sm$^{3+}$ ($4f^5$, $J=5/2$), we show that a combination of crystal field and on-site Coulomb repulsion causes SmCoIn$_5$ to exhibit a $\Gamma_7$ ground state similar to CeCoIn$_5$ with multiple $f$ electrons. Remarkably, we also find that with this ground state, SmCoIn$_5$ exhibits a temperature-induced valence crossover consistent with a Kondo scenario, leading to increased delocalization of $f$ holes below a temperature scale set by the crystal field, $T_v$ $\approx$ 60 K. Our result provides evidence that in the case of many $f$ electrons, the crystal field remains the most important tuning knob in controlling the efficiency of delocalization near a heavy fermion quantum critical point, and additionally clarifies that charge fluctuations play a general role in the ground state of "115" materials., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

2. Structural Phase Transition and Superconductivity in 2H-BaGaGe with Buckled Honeycomb Layers

Abstract

We report on the structural and superconducting properties of the intermetallic compound BaGaGe. We find that this material undergoes a structural second-order phase transition from the distorted AlB$_2$-type structure (1H, $a$ = 4.3254(2) \r{A}, $c$ = 5.1078(3) \r{A}, P6/mmm) into the CaIn$_2$-type structure (2H, $a$ = 4.3087(3) \r{A}, $c$ = 10.2117(6) \r{A}, P6$_3$/mmc) at a transition temperature of $T_{\rm S}$ = 253 K. We find that the structural phase-transition corresponds to a coherent buckling of the honeycomb layers, which we can interpret as a disorder-to-order transition of the atoms located within this layer. We show that the 2H-BaGaGe phase becomes superconducting at a critical temperature of $T_{\rm c}$ = 2.1 K. The bulk nature of the superconductivity in 2H-BaGaGe is confirmed by means of specific heat measurements, where we determine a value of $\Delta C$/$\gamma T_{\rm c}$ = 1.59, which is close to the expected BCS value in the weak coupling limit.

Diffraction from a lattice of periodically spaced crystals is a topic of current interest because of the great development of self-organised superlattices (SL) of nanocrystals (NC). The self-organisation of NC into SL has theoretical interest, but especially a rich application prospect, as the coherent organisation has large effects on a wide range of material properties. Diffraction is a key method to understand the type and quality of SL ordering. 4. Dynamic Magnetic Crossover at the Origin of the Hidden-Order in van der Waals Antiferromagnet CrSBr

Abstract

The van der Waals material CrSBr stands out as a promising two-dimensional magnet. Especially, its high magnetic ordering temperature and versatile magneto-transport properties make CrSBr an important candidate for new devices in the emergent field of two-dimensional magnetic materials. To date, the magnetic and structural properties of CrSBr have not been fully elucidated. Here, we report on the detailed temperature-dependent magnetic and structural properties of this material, by comprehensively combining neutron scattering, muon spin relaxation spectroscopy, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and magnetization measurements. We evidence that this material undergoes a transition to an A-type antiferromagnetic state below $T_{\rm N} \approx$ 140 K, with a pronounced two-dimensional character as deduced from the determined critical exponent of $\beta \approx $ 0.18. In our analysis of the field-induced metamagnetic transition, we find that the ferromagnetic correlations within the monolayers persist clearly above the N\'eel temperature in this material. Furthermore, we unravel the low-temperature (i.e. $T < T_{\rm N}$) magnetic hidden order within the long-range magnetically ordered state. We find that it is associated to a slowing down of the magnetic fluctuations, accompanied by a continuous reorientation of the internal magnetic field. These take place upon cooling below $T_s$ $\approx$ 100 K, until a spin freezing process occurs at $T$* $\approx$ 40 K. We argue this complex dynamic behavior to reflect a magnetic crossover driven by the in-plane uniaxial anisotropy, which is ultimately caused by the mixed-anion character of the material. Our findings indicate that the magnetic and structural properties of CrSBr widen its potential application as a component for spin-based electronic devices.

Abstract

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have emerged as next‐generation semiconductors capable of unifying superior photoemission properties, facile and inexpensive preparation, compositional and structural versatility. Among them, CsPbBr3 is a model system in theoretical and experimental studies owing to its intrinsic chemical stability. Nonetheless, knowledge of the precise magnitude and the size‐ and temperature‐dependent lattice and structural distortions is lacking, and the static/dynamic nature of disorder in NCs remains an open question. Herein, robust reciprocal space X‐ray total scattering analysis is applied and accurate lattice distortions, PbBr bond distances, and PbBrPb angles versus NCs size are extracted. The lattice anisotropy increases upon expansion on downsizing while, upon contraction on cooling, the lattice distortion behaves differently at intermediate (9 nm) and ultrasmall (5 nm) sizes and from the bulk. Bond distances (stretched by ≈1%) do not show any size dependence, whereas equatorial and axial angles denote more symmetric octahedral arrangements in the smallest sizes, where they differ by ≈2° compared to ≈8° in the bulk. Anomalously high atomic displacement parameters of axial bromine ions persisting down to cryogenic temperatures suggest statically disordered octahedral tilts. These results provide insights having important implications on size‐dependent emission properties and the exciton fine structure.

Abstract

Diffraction from a lattice of periodically spaced crystals is a topic of current interest because of the great development of self-organised superlattices (SL) of nanocrystals (NC). The self-organisation of NC into SL has theoretical interest, but especially a rich application prospect, as the coherent organisation has large effects on a wide range of material properties. Diffraction is a key method to understand the type and quality of SL ordering. Hereby, the characteristic diffraction signature of an SL of NC—together with the characteristic types of disorder—are theoretically explored.

Abstract

Atomic- and nanometer-scale features of nanomaterials have a strong influence on their chemical and physical properties and a detailed description of these elements is a crucial step in their characterization. Total scattering methods, in real and reciprocal spaces, have been established as fundamental techniques to retrieve this information. Although the impact of microstructural features, such as defectiveness of different kinds, has been extensively studied in reciprocal space, disentangling these effects from size- and morphology-induced properties, upon downsizing, is not a trivial task. Additionally, once the experimental pattern is Fourier transformed to calculate the pair distribution function, the direct fingerprint of structural and microstructural features is severely lost and no modification of the histogram of interatomic distances derived therefrom is clearly discussed nor considered in the currently available protocols. Hereby, starting from atomistic models of a prototypical system (cadmium selenide), we simulate multiple effects on the atomic pair distribution function, obtained from reciprocal space patterns computed through the Debye scattering equation. Size and size dispersion effects, as well as different structures, morphologies, and their interplay with several kinds of planar defects, are explored, aiming at identifying the main (measurable and informative) fingerprints of these features on the total scattering pattern in real and reciprocal spaces, highlighting how, and how much, they become evident when comparing different cases. The results shown herein have general validity and, as such, can be further extended to other classes of nanomaterials.

Abstract

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have emerged as next‐generation semiconductors capable of unifying superior photoemission properties, facile and inexpensive preparation, compositional and structural versatility. Among them, CsPbBr3 is a model system in theoretical and experimental studies owing to its intrinsic chemical stability. Nonetheless, knowledge of the precise magnitude and the size‐ and temperature‐dependent lattice and structural distortions is lacking, and the static/dynamic nature of disorder in NCs remains an open question. Herein, robust reciprocal space X‐ray total scattering analysis is applied and accurate lattice distortions, PbBr bond distances, and PbBrPb angles versus NCs size are extracted. The lattice anisotropy increases upon expansion on downsizing while, upon contraction on cooling, the lattice distortion behaves differently at intermediate (9 nm) and ultrasmall (5 nm) sizes and from the bulk. Bond distances (stretched by ≈1%) do not show any size dependence, whereas equatorial and axial angles denote more symmetric octahedral arrangements in the smallest sizes, where they differ by ≈2° compared to ≈8° in the bulk. Anomalously high atomic displacement parameters of axial bromine ions persisting down to cryogenic temperatures suggest statically disordered octahedral tilts. Abstract

Colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) of fully inorganic lead halide perovskites (LHPs) are the latest generation of quantum-dot materials with compelling optical characteristics. Favored by the nearly regular cubic shape of NCs, they readily self-organize into highly ordered supercrystals (SCs) that have been stimulating in-depth investigation of uncommon collective properties at the fundamental level. Herein, we explore LHP NC SCs formed in colloidal suspensions and as solid materials, without any prior rigorous NC size-selection process. The spontaneous self-organization manifests itself in synchrotron wide-angle X-ray total scattering (WAXTS) measurements of randomly oriented ensembles of SCs by virtue of the substructure in the 100(c) peak (in cubic notation). By developing atomistic models of SCs, we find an evidence that, in spite of the initial NCs size polydispersity (up to 20%), SCs of CsPbBr3 and CsPbBr1.5I1.5 NCs form through a size segregation process. The SCs exhibit high spatial structural coherence, that is, crystallographic alignment between NCs, along two and three directions, a degree of orientational order (the SCs mosaicity) below 2 degrees, and coherent sizes on the order of tens of nanometers. In situ coupled photoluminescence (PL) and WAXTS experiments evidence pronounced electronic coupling between NCs in SCs, seen as an ca. 50-70 meV red-shifted emission in dried samples compared to the corresponding dilute solution of NCs. Abstract

GdSb0.46Te1.48, a nonsymmorphic Dirac semimetal with Dirac nodes at the Fermi level, has a rich magnetic phase diagram with one of the phases predicted to be an antiferromagnetic skyrmion state. In the current work, we investigate GdSb0.71Te1.22 through bulk magnetization measurements, single-crystal, and powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction, as well as single-crystal hot-neutron diffraction. We resolve a weak orthorhombic distortion with respect to the tetragonal structure and charge density wave (CDW) satellites due to incommensurate modulations of the crystal structure. At 2 K the magnetic structure is modulated with two propagation vectors, kI = (0.45 0 0.45) and kII = (0.4 0 0), with all their arms visible. While kI persists up to the transition to the paramagnetic state at TN = 11.9 K, kII disappears above an intermediate magnetic transition at T1 = 5 K. Whereas magnetic field applied along the c-axis has only a weak effect on the intensity of antiferromagnetic reflections, it is effective in inducing an additional ferromagnetic component on Gd atoms. Abstract

The microscopic mechanism of heavy band formation, relevant for unconventional superconductivity in CeCoIn5 and other Ce-based heavy fermion materials, depends strongly on the efficiency with which f electrons are delocalized from the rare earth sites and participate in a Kondo lattice. Replacing Ce3+ (4f1, J = 5/2) with Sm3+ (4f5, J = 5/2), we show that a combination of the crystal electric field and on-site Coulomb repulsion causes SmCoIn5 to exhibit a Γ7 ground state similar to CeCoIn5 with multiple f electrons. We show that with this single-ion ground state, SmCoIn5 exhibits a temperature-induced valence crossover consistent with a Kondo scenario, leading to increased delocalization of f holes below a temperature scale set by the crystal field, Tv ≈ 60 K. Our result provides evidence that in the case of many f electrons, the crystal field remains the dominant tuning knob in controlling the efficiency of delocalization near a heavy fermion quantum critical point, and additionally clarifies that charge fluctuations play a general role in the ground state of "115" materials. In heavy fermion metals, exotic states such as superconductivity depend to a large extent on whether unpaired electrons can become delocalized from the magnetic sites. The authors demonstrate that the primary driving force behind delocalization is the local environment of the rare earth ions and the strength of the resulting charge fluctuations. Abstract: In this work the synthesis and characterization of gold nanoparticles functionalized by a novel thiol-organometallic complex containing Pd(II) centers is presented. Pd(II) thiol, trans, trans-[dithiolate-dibis(tributylphosphine)dipalladium(II)-4,4′-diethynylbiphenyl] was synthesized and linked to Au nanoparticles by the chemical reduction of a metal salt precursor. The new hybrid made of organometallic Pd(II) thiol-gold nanoparticles, shows through a single S bridge a direct link between Pd(II) and Au nanoparticles. The size-control of the Au nanoparticles (diameter range 2–10 nm) was achieved by choosing the suitable AuCl4−/thiol molar ratio. The size, strain, shape, and crystalline structure of these functionalized nanoparticles were determined by a full-pattern X-ray powder diffraction analysis, high-resolution TEM, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Photoluminescence spectroscopy measurements of the hybrid system show emission peaks at 418 and 440 nm. The hybrid was exposed to gaseous NO x with the aim to evaluate the suitability for applications in sensor devices; XPS measurements permitted to ascertain and investigate the hybrid –gas interaction.

The self-organisation of NC into SL has theoretical interest, but especially a rich application prospect, as the coherent organisation has large effects on a wide range of material properties. Diffraction is a key method to understand the type and quality of SL ordering. Hereby, the characteristic diffraction signature of an SL of NC—together with the characteristic types of disorder—are theoretically explored.

Abstract

Metallic copper generally adopts an FCC structure. In this work, we detect highly unusual BCC-structured Cu nanoparticles as a transient intermediate during the H-2 reduction of a Cu-I precursor, [(Cu4OBu4)-Bu-t], grafted onto the surface of partially dehydroxylated silica. The Cu BCC structure, assigned by in situ Cu K-edge XANES and EXAFS, as well as in situ synchrotron PXRD, converts upon heating into the most commonly found FCC allotrope. DFT calculations show that the BCC-Cu phase is in fact predicted to be more stable for small particles, and that their stability increases at lower H-2 concentrations. 43. Site-occupancy factors in the Debye scattering equation. A theoretical discussion on significance and correctness.

The Debye scattering equation (DSE) [Debye (1915). Ann. Phys. 351, 809-823] is widely used for analyzing total scattering data of nanocrystalline materials in reciprocal space. In its modified form (MDSE) [Cervellino et al. (2010). J. Appl. Cryst. 43, 1543-1547], it includes contributions from uncorrelated thermal agitation terms and, for defective crystalline nanoparticles (NPs), average site-occupancy factors (s.o.f.'s). The s.o.f.'s were introduced heuristically and no theoretical demonstration was provided. This paper presents in detail such a demonstration, corrects a glitch present in the original MDSE, and discusses the s.o.f.'s physical significance. Three new MDSE expressions are given that refer to distinct defective NP ensembles characterized by: (i) vacant sites with uncorrelated constant site-occupancy probability; (ii) vacant sites with a fixed number of randomly distributed atoms; (iii) self-excluding (disordered) positional sites. For all these cases, beneficial aspects and shortcomings of introducing s.o.f.'s as free refinable parameters are demonstrated. The theoretical analysis is supported by numerical simulations performed by comparing the corrected MDSE profiles and the ones based on atomistic modeling of a large number of NPs, satisfying the structural conditions described in (i)-(iii)., (open access.)

44. Large-scale oxygen order phase transitions and fast ordering kinetics at moderate temperatures in Nd 2 NiO 4+ δ electrodes.

Non-stoichiometric 214-nickelates with Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) type frameworks emerged as potential candidates for mixed electronic/ionic conductors in the intermediate temperature range. In this work we investigated structural aspects of the oxygen ion mobility diffusion mechanisms in non-stoichiometric Nd 2 NiO 4+ δ nickelates by X-ray (laboratory and synchrotron) as well by neutron diffraction. Temperature dependent synchrotron powder diffraction revealed a phase diagram of unprecedented complexity, involving a series of highly organized, 3D modulated phases related to oxygen ordering below 800 K. All phase transitionsimply translational periodicities exceeding 100 Å, and are found to be of 1 st order, together with fast ordering kinetics.
