Jan Ziółkowski’s historical novel entitled Kawaler złotej ostrogi (1967), which was preceded by the trilogy Homo novi (1955), is about the events of the first half of the 16th century. By means of historical narration, the author conducts a debate with Sienkiewicz’s vision of the Polish history, created “to comfort the hearts”. This allows the writer to reconcile with the idealized image of the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth, preserved in social mentality, deconstruct its image and create an alternative to Sienkiewicz’s narration. Difficult, painful, humiliating and embarrassing issues, such as social and national differences, submission (race differentiation, dominance, subordination, inequality, oppressiveness), as well as national vices, come to the fore in the novel. The plot is about the life of three characters: Marek Jakimowski – a Catholic nobleman, Stefan Satanowski – an Arian nobleman, and Jan Stołczyn – a liberated peasant. Each of the characters experiences oppression because of an unjust system based on the principles of “golden freedom”. Ziółkowski used a traditional model of a historical novel, creatively transformed the sources that were accessible to him, and built his own historical reconciliation narrative. This is an example of engaged writing.

Salezjanin ks. Ludwik Rupala był długoletnim kierownikiem oratoriów dla młodzieży zaniedbanej wychowawczo w Łodzi, Warszawie, Rumi. Całe swoje kapłańskie życie poświęcił młodemu pokoleniu Polaków, którym wpajał idee wychowawcze św. Jana Bosko. Stosowana przez niego metoda Założyciela (uprzedzająca) łączyła w sobie religię, rozum i miłość wychowawczą. Ks. Rupala żył oratorium, tworząc środowisko wychowawcze, wprowadzając młodzież w kulturę, pogłębiając jej życie religijne. Idąc za wskazówkami św. Jana Bosko, krytykował tych współbraci, którzy nienależycie wypełniali swoje obowiązki w pracy z młodzieżą. Był sędzią surowym, ale sprawiedliwym, obdarzony wyjątkową intuicją pedagogiczną, cieszył się zaufaniem wśród podopiecznych i ich rodziców.

The aim of the article is to discuss John Paul Us visit in Gniezno on his first pilgrimage to his country. The research problem is to analyze all the papal speeches made in Gniezno on June 3 and 4,1979 and to show the significance of their content for the subsequent changes that occurred in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe. The Pope delivered important speeches in this city in the form of homilies and catecheses addressed to different groups of people. He touched upon vital topics relating to the gift of baptism and responsibility for its fruits, the historical role of Saint Adalbert, the contemporary evangelizing mission of the Church and primateship. The author argues that the Pope took advantage of the Pentecost celebrations topresent a new vision of a united Europe that breathes with "two lungs" - eastern and western. The Popes conception was based on the idea of Pentecostes Slavae (Pentecost of the Slavs). It was only possible to implement after the changes of1989. Nonetheless, the visit to Gniezno on June 3-4,1979, served as a herald of transformations not just in Poland, but across Central and Eastern Europe. The following methods were used: philological and comparative, which took into account both the context of the papal statements and how they impacted the audience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Jan Długosz, krakowski kanonik i kronikarz dziejów Polski, jest także autorem Liber beneficiorum – Księgi uposażeń katedry krakowskiej, kolegiat, klasztorów i parafii z terenu diecezji krakowskiej, którą spisywał od 1470 r. aż do śmierci w 1480 r. Jest to źródło powszechnie wykorzystywane przez historyków średniowiecza Polski. Korzystają oni z reguły z drukowanego wydawnictwa Liber beneficiorum z lat 1863–1864, opartego nie na czterotomowym oryginale z XV w., przechowywanym w archiwum krakowskiej kapituły katedralnej, lecz na XVII-wiecznych kopiach, także znajdujących się w tym archiwum. Ponieważ wydanie to nie było wolne od błędów, na co zwracali uwagę badacze już od XIX w., potrzebne stało się nowe, krytyczne wydanie Liber beneficiorum. Od 1966 r. kilku badaczy, głównie Stanisław Kuraś i Marek Daniel Kowalski, starało się ustalić genezę, źródła i strukturę autografu Liber beneficiorum oraz datację tego dzieła na podstawie kryteriów wewnętrznych: wydarzeń, osób itp. Autorka niniejszego opracowania dąży natomiast do ustalenia datacji poszczególnych tomów Liber beneficiorum, a nawet ich części, na podstawie znaków wodnych figurujących na papierze, na którym został spisany autograf Liber beneficiorum. Rozważania te zilustrowała wizerunkami analizowanych znaków wodnych, dodała również tabele, w których figurują składki poszczególnych tomów z występującymi w nich znakami wodnymi z datacją porównawczą z innych źródeł. Prześledziła także metodę sporządzania Liber beneficiorum, zwłaszcza części parafialnej, oraz dzieje autografu Księgi uposażeń po śmierci Długosza. Dating the origin of Jan Długosz’s Liber beneficiorum based on watermarks Jan Długosz, the Krakow canon and chronicler of Polish events, is also the author of Liber beneficiorum – registers of emoluments regarding Krakow’s cathedral, collegiate churches, monasteries and parishes from the Krakow diocese, which he wrote from 1470 until his death in 1480. It is a source that is widely used by historians of medieval Poland. They generally use the printed version of Liber beneficiorum from the years 1863–1864, based not on the four-volume original from the 15th century, stored in the archives of the Krakow Cathedral Committee, but on the 17th century copies, also found in the same archives. As this publication contained some mistakes, which researchers drew attention to in the 19th century, a new publication of Liber beneficiorum became necessary. From 1966, a few researchers, mainly Stanisław Kuraś and Marek Daniel Kowalski, tried to establish the genesis, source and structure of writing of Liber beneficiorum as well as the dating of this work based on internal criteria: events, people etc. The author of this work tries, however, to establish the date of particular volumes of Liber beneficiorum, and even their parts, based on watermarks on the paper Liber beneficiorum was written on. The author illustrates these with images of the analysed watermarks, as well as tables in which parts of particular volumes appear together with the watermarks in them and dating comparisons with other sources. She also investigates the method of creating Liber beneficiorum, especially the parish parts, as well as the events of the register of emoluments after Długosz’s death. Scales of a Marvellous Balancing: Jan Kochanowski’s Threnody XVII The paper proposes at the new, detailed reading of Jan Kochanowski’s Threnody XVII. While it does not aim to thoroughly challenge the previous interpretations of the text, it focuses on the significant elements, which have been largely omitted in the existing studies. Despite the fact that researchers usually pointed the presence of Job motives in the poem, they were not analyzed in a systematic way as a concise set of textual allusions, hidden in the whole cycle of lamentations. The close reading of the poem reveals the central position of the image of weighting the reason on the scales, its source being the 6th chapter of The Book of Job. In these following analyses, the image is interpreted as the fulcrum of the chiastic composition of Threnody XVII. Finally, the paper puts forth a working hypothesis that the identified set of Job motives associated with the chiastic composition could be related to the Hebrew concentric structure (inclusio), as examined by Roland Meynet. Arguably, the further, extensive research is needed to confirm such a tempting, yet still highly insecure assumption.

Was being a Jan Kochanowski’s descentant a reason to be proud? Genealogy present in works devoted to the poets’ descentants (17th-18th centuries) Part. 1. Zuzanna Wołucka’s (nee Owadowska)’s descendants This study explores the genealogical awareness of the Polish nobility and the role of outstanding individuals in creating collective memory. More specifically, it offers an analysis of genealogical references included in encomia devoted to Jan Kochanowski’s enatic descendants, in the context of their famous ancestor’s literary output and his fame. Coming from the line of Zuzanna Wołucka, nee Owadowska, Jan Kochanowski’s granddaughter, the descendants inherited parts of the poet’s real estate and buried their relatives next to his Zwolen mausoleum till the end of the 18th century. The article is based on commemorative prints devoted to the poet’s descendants: Falces avitae ad lauream vernantis gloriae messem by Wojciech Zatoński (1696) written in honour of the Sieradz castellan’s wife Zofia Lipska nee Olszowska, Chwalebny zawód do kresu szczęśliwego by Krzysztof Wierzbicki (1699) in honour of the Sieradz chamberlain’s daughter Konstancja Zapolska, Niebo herbownego Księżyca by Samuel Wysocki (1732) lauding the Gostyn staroste’s daughter Zofia Lipska nee Granowska, as well as the anonymous Panegyricus probatissimo magistro belli in sago (1757) devoted to the Rawa palatine Kazimierz Granowski. None of these pieces includes any references to Jan Kochanowski, which can be explained by the social status of these newly promoted to state offices families with middle- to petty-nobility roots. The need to legitimize their position as the noble well-to-do class holding state posts required to show connections with sufficiently important ancestors who also held state offices, rather than by giving prominence to the genealogy and the past generations.

W artykule został podjęty problem kontemplacji mistycznej u św. Jana od Krzyża. Jego realizacja wymagała wyjaśnienia pojęcia kontemplacji zarówno w znaczeniu szerokim, jak i ściśle mistycznym. Ukazany został jej ścisły związek z życiem duchowym chrześcijanina. Kontemplacja, jak i życie duchowe posiadają swoje źródło w łasce chrztu świętego, która zawiera cały potencjał duchowego rozwoju. Ona stanowi podstawowe uzdolnienie do zjednoczenia z Bogiem, do kontemplacji najgłębszych tajemnic Boskich; gwarantuje otrzymywanie Ducha Świętego, którego Chrystus posłał do naszych serc, by dopełniał dzieła uświęcenia. Jednak jest Bożą tajemnicą, dlaczego nie w każdym przypadku „wpływ Boga na duszę” niesie z sobą taką samą doświadczalną formę. Na kolejnym etapie refleksji skonfrontowano kontemplację zwyczajną z kontemplacją mistyczną, by następnie uwzględnić jej dwie formy: oczyszczającą i jednocząca. Są one doświadczane przez wielu wierzących, ale nie w taki sam sposób i nie w takiej samej proporcji. Zakładając autentyczną wierność wierzącego, przy różnej formie przeżywania relacji z Bogiem i dokonujących się duchowych procesów, należy stwierdzić, że zależy to od Bożej pedagogii. Bóg najlepiej wie, jaką drogą prowadzić człowieka do osiągnięcia nadprzyrodzonego celu i w jaki sposób uczynić go skutecznym świadkiem Chrystusa. W dalszej kolejności uwzględniono dwa wymiary kontemplacji mistycznej: teologiczny, a więc obiektywny oraz doświadczalny, czyli subiektywny. Zastosowano metodę analizy oraz syntezy. Poddano pod refleksję źródłowe teksty, by poddać je analizie i wyciągnąć stosowne wnioski. Ostateczne wnioski są następujące: Kontemplacja, w ujęciu św. Jana od Krzyża, jest formą życia teologalnego. Pojawiając się, wywiera wpływ na wszystkie inne formy modlitwy: liturgiczną, ustną, lekturę Pisma Świętego i wprowadza cechę prostoty oraz miłosnej uwagi na Boga. Nie zastępuje tych form, ale nimi się karmi i jednocześnie ubogaca je. Między różnymi rodzajami modlitwy nie może istnieć żaden istotny kontrast. W życiu samego św. Jana od Krzyża obserwujemy praktykę modlitwy aż do śmierci we wszystkich jej formach, włącznie z modlitwą ustną. Kontemplacja wierzącego posiada swoje źródło w ukrytym i tajemnym działaniu Ducha Świętego. Bez tej działalności nie byłaby ona możliwa. Wbrew powszechnym opiniom wskazuje przede wszystkim na pierwszeństwo działania Bożego w procesie uświęcenia, zaś ludzka działalność posiada charakter odpowiedzi na to działania.
