Background: The intricate textural patterns commonly observed in metamorphosed and recrystallized zircon (ZrSiO4) underscore the crucial necessity of understanding the underlying mechanisms governing their formation to ensure accurate interpretation of the chemical and isotope data they contain. This study employed a combination of microanalytical techniques, including electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis, electron microprobe (EMP) mapping, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging, to investigate the processes of formation and modification of zircon in a late Pleistocene (~ 35 ka) syenite enclosed within the Nari Tephra Formation on Ulleung Island in South Korea. Findings: Under cathodoluminescence (CL), zircons within the syenite reveal dark, featureless, or oscillatory-zoned cores containing numerous inclusions of britholite. These cores are partially or entirely replaced by inward-penetrating bright-CL domains that exhibit minimal inclusion presence. Despite these changes, the external morphologies of the zircons remain largely unchanged, and the faded oscillatory zoning is preserved in the replaced regions. EMP mapping discloses amoebiform micro-domains with high Y, U, and Th concentrations within the dark-CL cores, while the bright-CL domains are relatively deficient in these trace elements. Microstructural analysis of the zircons using EBSD mapping indicates no significant misorientation between the dark-CL cores and the bright-CL rims. Deformation-related low-angle boundaries by lattice distortion are clearly observed in certain grains, cutting across the discrete SEM and EMP domains, and often aligned along submicron pore trails. Conclusions: Microstructural and microchemical analyses carried out in this study establish that the zircons within the Ulleung syenite have undergone subsolidus recrystallization, a process likely influenced by the presence of fresh melts or fluids. This recrystallization process could be attributed to either coupled dissolution and reprecipitation or thermoactivated particle and defect volume diffusion due to inherent lattice strain. The fluid-fluxed melting of igneous protoliths provides an opportunity to assess the role of fluid for the formation and modification of continental crust during high-temperature metamorphism. In order to investigate such an anatexis in the Buncheon granitic gneiss, Yeongnam Massif, we combined field, microstructural, and geochemical studies with the U-Pb and oxygen isotopic analyses of zircon and monazite. The granitic gneisses comprise metatexitic migmatites containing leucosomes, although neither melanosomes nor peritectic phases are associated with neosomes. These migmatites underwent syn -kinematic wet melting in the presence of ca. 0.9–1.4 wt% H 2 O (estimated from the pseudosection modeling) via the reaction, plagioclase + K-feldspar + quartz + H 2 O = melt, that took place at ∼650–750 °C and 4–6 kbar. The leucosomes differ in the degree of Eu anomalies and have variable amounts of rare earth elements, Zr, Y, and Th. Such variations are attributed to the segregation and migration of melts as well as the entrainment of residual phases. Sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U-Pb ages of zircon and monazite were determined from two granitic gneisses and three leucosomes together with an adjacent, undeformed Hongjesa granite. Zircon grains are oscillatory-zoned, except for homogeneous overgrowth rims rarely present in two leucosomes. Both zircon domains were dated at ca. 1.98–1.97 Ga and ca. 1.86 Ga, respectively, suggesting that igneous protoliths were partly recrystallized during the late Orosirian. Monazites from two gneiss samples contain submicroscopic polycrystalline inclusions of K-feldspar + quartz + apatite, reflecting the presence of former melts, and yielded a pooled 207Pb/206Pb age of 1859 ± 6 Ma (n = 30). In contrast, monazites from a leucosome are inclusion-free, and yielded the youngest age of 1840 ± 16 Ma (n = 6). This result is interpreted to represent the melt crystallization at ca. 1.84 Ga following the ca. 1.86 Ga anatexis. On the other hand, monazite from the Hongjesa granite, yielded a weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb age of 1878 ± 5 Ma (n = 11), most likely reflecting a prograde metamorphic growth. The δ18O values of ca. 1.98–1.97 Ga igneous zircon in granitic gneisses are 7.1–7.2 ‰, but those from the leucosome are reduced at 5.9–6.7 ‰. The latter is largely identical to 5.7–6.7 ‰ estimated from ca. 1.86 Ga domains of zircon in the leucosome and monazite in the granitic gneiss; in contrast, a slightly lower δ18O value of 5.46 ± 0.61 ‰ is recorded in the ca. 1.84 Ga monazite of leucosome. The relatively low δ18O values are most likely accounted for by an influx of fluid that has apparently triggered partial melting in the granitic gneiss, and the fluid itself is possibly linked to the crystallization of mafic magmas in an arc complex. Taken together, in contrast to the majority of zircons preserving the crystallization age of igneous protoliths, monazites are more susceptible to recrystallization during the fluid-present melting and permit us to decode a protracted (∼20 m.yr.) episode from partial melting to melt crystallization in the Yeongnam Massif. Such a longevity of melt-present system typifies the prolonged crustal reworking of Paleoproterozoic Korean arc situated at the eastern margin of the North China Craton. • Partial melting of granitic gneiss occurred due to an influx of external fluids. • The melting occurred at 1.86–1.84 Ga following protolith emplacement at 1.98 Ga. • The interaction with low δ18O fluids in association with the crystallization of mafic magmas. • The protracted melting typifies the crustal reworking of the Paleoproterozoic Korean arc. The Chuncheon nephrite deposit is the largest in South Korea with an estimated reserve of 300,000 tons. Located in mid-eastern South Korea, the deposit is in the form of lenses in the contact zone between dolomitic marble and amphibole schist in the upper part of a biotite schist. To date, the origin, process of formation, and age of the Chuncheon nephrite deposit remain unclear, which hinders our further understanding of the formation of nephrite. This study involved petrography, chemical analyses, and nephrite age determinations using optical mineralogy, electron microprobe-analyses (EMPA), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), and SHRIMP (Sensitive High-Resolution Ion MicroProbe) analyses of zircon. Petrographic studies indicated that the Chuncheon nephrite consists mainly of tremolite. The low contents of Cr (2.15–4.74 ppm) and Ni (2.95–4.90 ppm) are typical of dolomite-related nephrites and lower than in serpentine-related nephrites. The total REE contents are <18.5 ppm. The REE chondrite-normalized patterns display right-leaning LREE and almost flat HREE patterns, which are consistent with the REE model of dolomitic marble. The δ18O isotope compositions of the zircons (6.34‰–12.5‰) from the nephrite overlap those of the Chuncheon dolomite (2.4‰–18.2‰), indicates clearly that dolomite played an important role in the formation of the Chuncheon nephrite. The petrography and geochemistry suggest that it had a metasomatic origin involving the reactions dolomitic marble → diopside, diopside → tremolite, and tremolite → chlorite. The δD and δ18O isotope compositions of our specimens of nephrite (δD = − 95.3‰ to − 78.3‰ and − 118‰ to − 105‰; 18O = − 9.9‰ to − 7.9‰) and the hydrothermal fluids in equilibrium with the nephrite (δD = − 73.6‰ to − 56.6‰ and − 96.3‰ to − 83.3‰, 330–450 °C; δ18O = − 9.41‰ to − 6.38‰, 330–430 °C) suggest that the hydrothermal fluids were predominantly meteoric water. The zircons contain almost no mineral inclusions, which is quite different from zircons in other nephrite deposits. The variable SHRIMP U–Pb ages of the zircons (908.9 ± 4.8 to 459.1 ± 1.9 Ma (n = 7), 436.3 ± 16.9 to 359.5 ± 6.4 Ma (n = 5), and 249.9 ± 5.2 to 79.4 ± 1.9 Ma (n = 5)) in the Chuncheon nephrite may record the ages of a regional multi-stage metamorphism. Due to the generally low temperature of formation of the nephrite, we speculate that the ages of zircons only record the two relatively high-temperature initial stages of nephrite formation (dolomitic marble → diopside, and diopside → coarse-grained tremolite) and failed to record the age of the lowest-temperature third stage of high-quality nephrite formation (coarse-grained tremolite → fine-grained tremolite). It has generally been considered that dolomite-related nephrite forms at the contacts between granite/granodiorite and dolomitic marble, whereas serpentinite-related nephrite forms at the contacts between serpentinite and silica-rich rocks. However, the genesis of the Chuncheon nephrite deposit does not fit with either of these well-known types. Thus, we developed a new model for the Chuncheon nephrite in which heat was provided by regional multi-stage metamorphism, meteoric water dominated the nephrite-forming fluids, and dolomitic marble and biotite schist provided the material for the nephrite. • First report of Paleoproterozoic incipient charnockite from the Yeongnam Massif. • Incipient charnockite is a peak-metamorphic product of biotite-dehydration melting. • Prolonged granitic magmatism, granulite-facies metamorphism, and fluid influx at ca. 1.88–1.84 Ga. • Paleoproterozoic hot orogenesis in the North China Craton linked to the Yeongnam Massif. The incipient charnockite or orthopyroxene-bearing granitic orthogneiss is a relatively common constituent in ancient granulite-facies terranes, and its formation has been often attributed to an influx of CO 2 -rich fluid or a removal of aqueous melt. Temporal relationship between the orthopyroxene formation and the fluid or melt migration, however, remains debatable. Here we report the first finding of incipient charnockite hosted by garnet-biotite-bearing granitic gneisses in the Sancheong–Hadong anorthosite complex, Yeongnam Massif. Both lithologies preserve a variety of field and microstructural evidence for partial melting and subsequent melt crystallization, as manifested by granitic leucosomes and biotite-rich residua. Based on the phase equilibria modeling and geothermobarometric calculation, peak metamorphic conditions of migmatities were estimated to be 5.4–6.0 kbar and 800–850 °C, which led to the biotite dehydration melting together with the orthopyroxene formation in incipient charnockite. Sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U–Pb analyses of zircon from an incipient charnockite and a host gneiss yielded the weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb ages identical within errors; 1880 ± 5 Ma and 1872 ± 6 Ma for the cores, and 1862 ± 4 Ma and 1861 ± 4 Ma for the rims, respectively. The former is interpreted to represent the time for magmatic crystallization of granitic protoliths, whereas the latter for subsequent anatexis typified by peritectic growth of orthopyroxene. Such a timeline is consistent with two distinct thermal events previously reported from the Sancheong-Hadong anorthosite complex. By contrast, monazite grains from a biotite-bearing granitic gneiss in the charnockite zone yielded the weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb ages of 1866 ± 14 Ma and 1835 ± 11 Ma for the core and rim, respectively. The latter is consistent with 1842 ± 8 Ma, estimated from monazite neoblasts of incipient charnockite. The monazite growth during a post-peak metamorphic stage at ca. 1.84 Ga is attributed to a fluid influx event, apparently concentrated in the charnockite zone. The charnockite formation in the Yeongnam Massif further attests to the longevity (>ca. 40 m.y.) of hot orogenesis that has governed the Paleoproterozoic crustal evolution in eastern North China Craton.
