To explore the relationship between air pollution and total factor productivity and new pathways, This paper examines the impact of air pollution on total factor productivity of A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen between 2015 and 2019. It investigates this relationship by considering two pathways: investor sentiment and government attention. The findings indicate that air pollution suppresses total factor productivity of firms. However, air pollution stimulates investor sentiment, which in turn increases R&D investment and total factor productivity, reducing to some extent the dampening effect of air pollution on total factor productivity. There exists a notable positive correlation between air quality and government attention, acting as a mediating variable. This implies that air pollution has the potential to capture the attention of governmental entities, leading to the implementation of appropriate measures aimed at managing and mitigating the occurrence of air pollution caused by industrial enterprises.And the relevant governments should formulate a series of policies to meet the different needs of different enterprises. These two approaches have varying impacts depending on the type of enterprises, thus governments should develop laws to cater to the various demands of different types of enterprises. Facing the increasingly stringent constraints of resources and the environment, the green transformation of enterprises is imperative. This study selects A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2014 to 2021 as samples, using the difference-in-differences method to examine the impact of the environmental protection tax reform (EPTR) on the green transformation of enterprises. The results indicate that the EPTR can promote the green transformation of enterprises, achieving this through three channels: raising the cost of pollution, strengthening the rigidity of law enforcement, and breaking the collusion between the government and enterprises. Notably, this promotional effect is more significant in non-state-owned enterprises, companies in the eastern and western regions, firms with low financing constraints, and those with high media attention. Further analysis shows that the EPTR has a positive impact on the green total factor productivity (GTFP) of enterprises, which implies that enterprises are not only proactively pushing for a green transformation at the strategic level but also taking practical actions. This study responds to the problem of the greening of tax system to promote the green development of enterprises from two aspects of enterprise strategic implementation and productivity and explores the impact mechanism from the perspective of institutional logic. It enriches the research on the effectiveness of the EPTR at the micro-level and broadens the research perspective on the impact mechanisms of environmental regulation. The findings of this study provide references for further optimising relevant policies and regulations and also offer insights for other countries and regions seeking sustainable development. Under the ongoing implementation of the "dual carbon" goal, research has focused on the impact of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives on green innovation. However, few studies have analyzed in depth the mechanisms of ESG impact on green total factor productivity (green TFP). Here, we explored the impact of ESG performance on green TFP, green technical efficiency, and green technological progress using A-share listed companies in China's Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets from 2011 to 2021. The results show that good ESG performance can significantly improve the green TFP of enterprises, and that this effect is more prominent in industries with lower environmental risks and enterprises in the growth and maturity stages. We identified the importance of the psychological account path and propose that the promotional effect of ESG performance on green TFP mainly derives from improving green technical efficiency, rather than from expanding green technological boundaries. These findings have practical implications for guiding companies to implement ESG concepts, strengthening the synergistic role of government regulation and professional supervision, and promoting micro-level implementation of innovation-driven and sustainable development strategies, thereby promoting high-quality development. Water resources are a fundamental natural and strategic economic resource and are closely related to high-quality economic and societal development. This paper uses the pilot implementation of the water resource tax reform to explore the impact of that reform on the green innovation and total factor productivity of enterprises. The study sample includes data for high water-consuming A-share listed enterprises in Shenzhen and Shanghai, China, from 2007 to 2021; the double-difference method was used for the analysis. Study findings indicate that replacing water resource fees with taxes significantly improves the green innovation level and total factor productivity of enterprises. Green innovation has a significant partial mediating effect between the water resource tax reform and total factor productivity. The water resource tax reform promotes green innovation in enterprises, enhancing total factor productivity. When considering different types of enterprise property rights, the economic effect of the water resource tax reform is more pronounced in non-state-owned enterprises, compared to state-owned enterprises. Industrial robotics has become a driving force in the development of high-quality manufacturing enterprises. This paper investigates the impact of industrial robotics on the total factor productivity of enterprises and its mechanism of action through the use of data from A-shares of Chinese companies listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges from 2007 to 2019. We found that the use of industrial robots significantly increases the total factor productivity of enterprises, findings that still hold when Bartik instrumental variables are constructed. The mechanism of action suggests that industrial robot application improves both the human capital structure and the innovation capability of enterprises, thus increasing total factor productivity. Heterogeneity analysis shows that industrial robot applications are more likely to increase total factor productivity in firms that are non-state-owned and small scale and have political affiliations, low market concentration, low financialization, and high managerial competence. The findings of this study will help to accurately assess the productivity effects of industrial robotics, and the government should continue to promote the integration of industrial robotics and manufacturing development and actively cultivate independent innovation capabilities and professional skills in the field of industrial robotics in order to increase total factor productivity in enterprises. Digital transformation plays a crucial role in improving the quality development of companies in this era of digital economy with ever-changing technologies. This paper empirically investigates the impact of corporate digital transformation on total factor productivity and the mechanism of action, using A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2011–2021 as the research sample, and found that the digital transformation of companies significantly improves total factor productivity, with the plausibility of the findings being verified by a series of robustness tests. Based on the heterogeneity study, it is found that such effect is stronger for private companies, non-high-tech companies, and companies with a high degree of industry competition. The mechanism test indicates that digital transformation facilitates total factor productivity through four ways: strengthening company technological innovation, reducing operational costs, increasing resource allocation efficiency, and improving human capital structure. Green finance development is critical for balancing economic growth and environmental conservation. Global economies implement rigorous environmental rules to limit climate change, stimulating the shift to renewable energy by promoting green investment due to more excellent perception and mounting demands from concerned parties—using 27,042 observations from China's Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges for A-share listed businesses. On data from 1990 to 2019, this research uses a cross-section augmented autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) framework. The findings show that enforcing strict environmental standards is one of the most effective strategies for Chinese companies to reduce carbon emissions using green financing. Furthermore, renewable energy has a negative correlation with carbon emissions. Our research reveals that renewable energy regulations increase energy businesses' total factor productivity and that the impact of policy implementation lasts for some time. Our results hold up to a variety of green finance promotion approaches. According to further research, the boosting effect of renewable energy policy implementation may be eclipsed by its impact on the allocation of resources efficiency and technical innovation. Furthermore, the influence of renewable energy legislation on total factor productivity varies due to changes in company type, external environment, and geographical position. Based on the theoretical mechanism that 'financing constraints (investment-cash flow sensitivity) → capital misallocation → firm's total factor productivity' and ADL(2,2) model, implied cost model, total factor productivity model, panel regression model and mediation effect model, we empirically investigate the impact of financing constraints on TFP loss and the mediating effect of capital misallocation. Finance and market transaction data for manufacturing companies listed on Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges during 2009–2019 are used in the empirical study. Chinese manufacturing companies were shown to have investment-cash flow sensitivity. The empirical analysis proved that financing constraints not only have direct negative impact on the firm's TFP directly but also negatively affect the TFP by the mediating effect of capital misallocation. Moreover, firm heterogeneity analysis showed that the above two impacts were greater for non-stated owned firms, small and medium-sized firms, and young firms than stated-owned firms, big firms and mature firms. Investor sentiment does not only have negative impacts. It may also improve green total factor productivity by invigorating funds. This research constructs a new indicator at the firm level to measure the green total factor productivity of firms. We research the effect of investor sentiment on firms' green total factor productivity using a sample of Chinese heavy polluters listed on Shanghai and Shenzhen A-shares between 2015 and 2019. Through a series of tests, the mediating role of agency costs and financial situations is confirmed. It is discovered that the digitization of businesses facilitates the effect of investor sentiment on the green total factor productivity of businesses. And when managerial competence reaches a certain threshold, the impact of investor sentiment on green total factor productivity is amplified. In the digital economy, the relationship between digital transformation and a company's total factor productivity has profound implications for high-quality business development. Heavy polluters are given more environmental responsibility because of their high pollution and emission characteristics. This paper analyses the theoretical framework for the impact of digital transformation on the total factor productivity of heavily polluting firms. Using a sample of Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share heavy polluters from 2010 to 2020, we explore how the digital transformation of heavy polluters affects the total factor productivity of firms. The study found that the digital transformation of heavily polluting companies can effectively improve total factor productivity, internally by increasing their level of green technology innovation and externally by increasing their willingness and capacity for corporate social responsibility. At the same time, digital transformation can improve total factor productivity by reducing cost stickiness, revealing the "black box" in which digital transformation affects the total factor productivity of an enterprise. It was further found that the digital transformation of companies with high levels of environmental investment, large enterprises, those in non-manufacturing industries, and heavy polluters of a state-owned nature had a more significant impact on total factor productivity. The findings of the study provide empirical evidence for the digital transformation of heavily polluting companies to improve productivity and the green transformation of the economy for companies under the low carbon goal. The influencing factors of corporate GTFP are a topic of considerable interest in the academia, but they are mainly limited to discussing the impact of formal institutions on corporate GTFP. Although a small amount of literature has studied the impact of clan culture, Confucian culture, and social trust on corporate GTFP based on informal institutions, they have ignored the factor of senior executives' military experience. To fill this research gap, using a sample of Chinese A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2011 to 2021, this article studies the impact of senior executives' military experience on corporate green total factor productivity (GTFP). The results show that senior executives' military experience has a significant positive impact on corporate GTFP. Further research shows that the positive impact of senior executives' military experience on corporate GTFP is more significant in regions with imperfect formal institutions. The test of mechanism effect shows that R&D investment is an important channel for executives' military experience to promote corporate GTFP. For the first time, this article examines the impact of informal institutions on corporate GTFP from the perspective of senior executives' military experience. The research contributions of this study are as follows: it enriches the literature on the economic consequences of senior executives' military experience and the influencing factors of corporate GTFP and has enlightenment and reference significance for improving the corporate GTFP. The establishment of pilot free trade zones (FTZs) is a key strategic measure taken by China to promote high-quality economic development, but there are still gaps in the research on how the establishment of FTZs affects the environmental performance of enterprises from a micro perspective. Using data from China's Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share resource-based listed enterprises from 2010 to 2020, this paper uses the difference-in-difference model to examine the impact of the establishment of FTZs on the environmental performance of enterprises. The study finds that after the city that the enterprise located is set up as a free trade zone (FTZ), enterprises' environmental performance has been significantly improved, and this effect has a continuous positive impact. As far as the influence mechanism is concerned, the main driving forces for the establishment of FTZs are technology effect, competition effect, and resource allocation effect, which are embodied in the significant improvement of enterprises' green technology innovation, total factor productivity, and environmental protection investment. The environmental performance of non-state-owned and large-scale resource-based enterprises is more prominently affected by the establishment of FTZs. In capital-intensive industries and the eastern region, the environmental performance improvement effect of the establishment of FTZs is more obvious. Treating the green credit policy issued in 2012 as a quasi-natural experiment, this study has investigated the impact of green credit policy on total factor productivity of the manufacturing firms in China by using the panel data of the A-share firms listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges during 2008 and 2020, with the consideration of the mediating role of debt financing and the moderating role of environmental regulation simultaneously. The results show that green credit policy has a negative effect on total factor productivity of the manufacturing firms in China. Empirical evidence also shows that debt financing could oppositely mediate the nexus between green credit policy and total factor productivity of the manufacturing firms in China by both inhibiting long-term loans and promoting short-term loans. In addition, the moderating role of environmental regulation is partially and conditionally established. Furthermore, the regional heterogeneity and the property rights heterogeneity are proved. Marine industry continues to grow rapidly in China, while the contribution of the total factor productivity (TFP) to its gross output still remains very limited. Facing this issue, it is urgent to promote TFP by innovation, and Chinese government provides persistent subsidies to stimulate the innovation of relative enterprises. Taking listed companies of marine industry in Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Markets (2007–2019) as samples, this study performed empirical tests by multiple regressions to check the effects of such subsidies on the TFP of Chinese marine industry. It was observed that, as a whole, government subsidies present positive effects on the TFP of associated companies, and subsidies beforehand yield higher promotion than subsidies afterwards. The subsidies work mainly via easing financing constraints and encouraging R&D investment of relative firms. Our results are highlighted by revealing the differential effects of government subsidies on the TFP of Chinese marine industry and their functional mechanism. It implies that, besides government subsidies, the optimization of financial market may also be helpful in promoting TFP by innovation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To achieve its carbon peak and neutrality targets, China is in need of balancing environmental and economic sustainability; In addition, whether environmental regulations can gain economic dividends while protecting the environment is particularly important. Based on the data of A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2012 to 2021, this study takes China's environmental fee-to-tax as a quasi-natural experiment, and adopts the difference-in-difference-in-differences model to evaluate the impact of environmental tax on enterprises' total factor productivity (ETFP). The results show that the environmental fee-to-tax significantly hinders the growth of ETFP. Further, this negative impact mainly stems from the fact that the reform prompts enterprises to choose strategic innovation and conduct greenwashing behavior. Furthermore, when considering enterprises' heterogeneity, we find that enterprises with large scale, high investment efficiency, state ownership, high market competitiveness and located in western regions are more resistant to policy shocks. This paper provides reliable empirical evidence and useful policy implications for further formulating environmental tax policies to accomplish the "win-win" goal for both the environment and the economy.
