Background: Since 2019, multiple HIV outbreaks occurred among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Minnesota. Syringe service programs (SSPs) are evidence-based programs that reduce the spread of HIV. We conducted an assessment of characteristics and HIV risk and prevention among clients of a delivery-based SSP near an HIV outbreak in rural, northern Minnesota. Methods: In the fall of 2021, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of clients of a mobile SSP based in Duluth, Minnesota. Survey topics included demographics, drug use, sexual behavior, HIV testing history, and HIV status. We conducted descriptive analyses and used univariate logistic regression to identify correlates of syringe sharing. The analysis was limited to PWID in the last six months. Results: A total of 125 people were surveyed; 77 (62%) were PWID in the last six months. Among these participants, 52% were female and 50% were homeless. Thirty-two percent reported sharing syringes and 45% reported sharing injecting equipment. Approximately one-half (49%) of participants had been tested for HIV in the past year, and none reported being HIV-positive. Individuals reported low condom usage (88% never used), and 23% of participants reported engaging in some form of transactional sex in the last six months. Incarceration in the last year was associated with sharing syringes (odds ratio = 1.4, 95% confidence interval 1.1–1.8). Conclusion: HIV risk was high among PWID receiving services at this SSP. Lake water clarity is an indicator of water quality, trophic status, and habitat condition. Changes in clarity impact lake ecosystems and may reflect land use changes or presence of invasive species. Quantifying temporal changes in water clarity can be challenging because clarity varies seasonally, annually, and spatially within and among lakes. We developed a hierarchical generalized additive model to quantify trends in water clarity (Secchi depth) from 1979 to 2018 for 909 Minnesota lakes, accounting for seasonal and spatial variability. Water clarity increased by 0.41 m across lakes from 1984 to 1988 and 2014 to 2018. Lake‐specific clarity trends varied: clarity did not change significantly in 59.0% of lakes, increased in 34.5% of lakes, and decreased in 6.5% of lakes. Water clarity dynamics caused considerable variability in littoral area between seasons and years. Our results have wide applications in aquatic ecology, including understanding changes to food webs, assessing fish habitat, and evaluating impacts of invasive species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine uptake among adolescents remains suboptimal in the US. The COVID-19 pandemic posed new challenges to increase HPV vaccination rates. To characterize parent-reported barriers to obtain HPV vaccination for their children and to identify psychosocial factors associated with parents' intention to vaccinate their children for HPV, we administered parent surveys between April 2020 and January 2022 during a randomized pragmatic trial assessing the impact of evidence-based implementation strategies on HPV vaccination rates for adolescent patients at six Mayo Clinic primary care practices in Southeast Minnesota. A total of 342 surveys were completed (response rate 34.1%). Analyses were focused on parents of unvaccinated children (n = 133). The survey assessed the main reason the child did not receive the HPV vaccine, parental beliefs about the vaccine, and the parent's intention to vaccinate the child for HPV in the next 12 months. Frequently reported awareness and access barriers to HPV vaccination included not knowing the child was due (17.8%) and COVID-19 related delay (11.6%). Frequently reported attitudinal barriers include the belief that the child was too young for the vaccine (17.8%) and that the vaccine is not proven to be safe (16.3%). Injunctive social norm (Adjusted-OR = 3.15, 95%CI: 1.94, 5.41) and perceived harm beliefs (Adjusted-OR = 0.58, 95%CI: 0.35, 0.94) about the HPV vaccine were positively and negatively associated with HPV vaccination intention, respectively. Our findings suggest that continued efforts to overcome parental awareness, access, and attitudinal barriers to HPV vaccination are needed and underscore the importance of utilizing evidence-based health system-level interventions. This paper describes the development and execution of an exhibition in an academic museum setting. The exhibition is presented as a self-directed learning intervention. The development process included conceptual development, the selection of exhibition materials, the creation of didactic written materials, spatial arrangement of the materials, organizing the flow and interaction of the exhibition, and analysis of the results of the exhibition. We find that interactivity is a viable means to drive interest in the subject(s) of an exhibition and that crowds can make informed decisions about the perception of displayed objects. We propose that interactive didactic exhibitions such as this show potential for successful self-directed learning in a variety of contexts and that further study of the results of such exhibitions are necessary.

The COVID-19 pandemic illuminated the digital divide revealing an expanse of inequity among students who had access to the internet, personal devices, and parental support during remote learning and those who did not. Framed with the theoretical lens of equity literacy, this paper details the results of a survey completed by 56 Minnesota district level technology directors. The survey asked how school districts were addressing the technology inequities experienced by students and families while in hybrid and distance learning models. Results reflected that districts' efforts to provide students technology devices were efficient and successful. Of greatest concern for respondents was the lack of students' attendance and engagement in learning. Recommendations for further research are provided including advocacy for the expansion of broadband service, the pandemic's impact on the mental health of students, and efforts to sustain access to technology for all learners after the COVID-19 pandemic concludes.

Background: Prior research has shown associations between controlling food parenting practices (e.g., pressure-to-eat, restriction) and factors that increase risk for cardiovascular disease in children (e.g., low diet quality, obesity). This study aimed to examine associations between real-time parental stress and depressed mood, food parenting practices, and child eating behaviors in a longitudinal cohort study. Methods: Children ages 5–9 years and their families (n = 631) from six racial/ethnic groups (African American, Hispanic, Hmong, Native American, Somali/Ethiopian, White) were recruited for this study through primary care clinics in a large metromolitan area in the US (Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN) in 2016–2019. Ecological momentary assessment was carried out over seven days with parents at two time points, 18 months apart. Adjusted associations between morning stress and depressed mood of parents on food parenting practices and child eating behaviors at the evening meal were examined. Interactions tested whether food security, race/ethnicity and child sex moderated associations. Results: High levels of parental stress and depressed mood experienced earlier in the day were associated with controlling food parenting practices and child food fussiness at dinner the same night. Results were dependent on food security status, race/ethnicity, and child sex. Conclusions: Health care professionals may want to consider, or continue, screening parents for stress, depression, and food insecurity during well-child visits and discuss the influence these factors may have on food parenting practices and child eating behaviors. Future research should use real-time interventions such as ecological momentary intervention to reduce parental stress and depressed mood to promote healthy food parenting practices and child eating behaviors. Phosphorus (P) fertilizer recommendations based on the build and maintain (B&M) or the sufficiency philosophies were compared at six sites across Minnesota. Various levels of soil test P (STP) levels were established over four growing seasons. Applied P and P removed in harvested grain were monitored and used to develop a soil net P balance (Net P). Linear regression of net P with changes in STP was highly significant. Initial STP levels could be maintained at four of the six sites with a negative Net P. At those same sites, a zero Net P would tend to slowly increase STP over time. A sequential soil P fractionation analysis was conducted on soils from the six sites at the initiation and at the end of the 4‐year period. Nine total soil P fractions were extracted that represented both inorganic P (Pi) and organic P (Po) in the labile and non or less labile soil P pools. A positive linear relationship between Net P and changes in Pi fractions was significant. As Net P increased, so did the changes in Pi in the Resin, BiCarb, and NaOH fractions. These three fractions accounted for 66% to >100% of the changes in Net P with Resin and NaOH accounting for the majority of Net P. Changes in Net P that were accounted for in the less labile P pools, Sonic and HCl fractions, variable, and difficult to determine. There was little effect of Net P on Po fractions. Forest management and planning efforts often account for many resource objectives and benefits, including wildlife habitat. In particular, newly approved management goals and harvest targets on state lands in Minnesota were examined for their potential impact on wildlife habitat. Using a list of stands planned for potential harvest and a regional wildlife habitat model, habitat effects were assessed for 173 native, forest-dependent wildlife species on state lands. Leveraging forest type– and region-specific harvest probabilities and post-examination lag times to harvest, three simulation efforts covering the spectrum of possible outcomes were used to estimate habitat change from 2020 to 2030. In the most realistic simulation, 31.8% of species exhibited statistically significant positive habitat change, 11.6% significant negative change, and 56.6% nonsignificant or no change. Compared with simulations reflecting more extreme levels of harvest, the realistic simulation showed the greatest compromise between negative and positive shifts in habitat. Results reflect tradeoffs in wildlife habitat preferences such that changes in management that positively affect certain species often negatively affect others. Tradeoffs may be addressed by providing flexibility to individual managers where a targeted prescription is justified for a specific species, all while continuing broad statewide forest management goals. The article examines the significant impact of urbanism and environmentalism on the need to build more affordable housing quickly in Minnesota and California. Topics include the limits of municipalities acting alone to address affordable housing as a result of the tension between urbanism and environmentalism, why coordination with state legislatures is needed as environmental laws can delay or prohibit building more housing, and a background on the 2040 plan passed in Minneapolis in 2019.

Primary care providers are well positioned to address the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs of adolescents; however, gaps often exist in the delivery of quality SRH services in primary care. Our objective was to identify specific opportunities to improve the delivery of adolescent SRH services in primary care. We conducted in-depth interviews with 25 primary care providers from various disciplines across rural and urban areas of Minnesota and conducted thematic analysis of transcribed data. Participants identified salient opportunities in three areas: (1) training and resources for providers (e.g., related to minor consent laws or addressing sensitive subjects), (2) practices and procedures (e.g., time-alone procedures and policies for confidential screening and sharing test results), and (3) education for adolescents (e.g., knowing their rights and accessing confidential SRH services). Background: The inhibition of sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT-2) has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of diabetic and non-diabetic patients with heart failure. The underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. The present prospective study investigates for the first time the effect of empagliflozin on various soluble markers of inflammation in patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Methods: We included 50 inpatients with HFrEF and diabetes mellitus type 2. A total of 25 patients received a therapy with the SGLT-2-inhibitor empagliflozin in addition to standard medication; the other 25 patients did not receive empagliflozin and were considered the control group. Quality of life, functional status and soluble immunological parameters in serum were assessed at baseline and after 3 months. Results: The baseline characteristics of both groups revealed no significant differences. Patients on empagliflozin demonstrated a significant improvement in the Minnesota living with heart failure questionnaire (baseline 44.2 ± 20.2 vs. 24 ± 17.7; p < 0.001), in distance in the 6-min walk test (baseline 343 ± 145 m vs. 450 ± 115 m; p < 0.001) and in soluble interleukin-6 level (baseline 21.7 ± 21.8 pg/mL vs. 13.7 ± 15.8 pg/mL; p = 0.008). There was no significant change of these or other parameters in the control group (p > 0.05 each). Conclusions: The empagliflozin-induced improvement of quality of life and functional capacity in patients with HFrEF and type 2 diabetes mellitus is accompanied by a substantial reduction of interleukin-6 levels. Measuring suspended sediment in fluvial systems is critical to understanding and managing water resources. Sampling suspended sediment has been the primary means of understanding fluvial suspended sediment. Specialized samplers, sampling methods, and laboratory methods developed by select U.S. Federal Agencies are more representative of river and stream conditions than commonly used grab sampling and total suspended solids (TSS) laboratory methods but are not widely used because they are expensive, time consuming, and not required as part of water quality standards in the United States. A new suspended-sediment sampling method called a depth-integrated grab (DIG) was developed by combining certain elements from both grab and depth-integrating sampling methods and suspended-sediment concentration (SSC) laboratory methods. The goal of the DIG method was to provide more accurate results than Grab-TSS while being easier and cheaper to sample than specialized samplers and methods. Approximately 50 paired comparison samples were collected at 9 sites in Minnesota from 2018 through 2019. Results showed no significant difference between the DIG and specialized sampling methods and a significant difference between both methods and the Grab-TSS method. The DIG-SSC provided an improved alternative to the Grab-TSS method, but additional research and testing is important to evaluate if this method is appropriate in different conditions than were observed in this study. Generally, red wines made from cold-hardy hybrid grapes have much lower tannin content than Vitis vinifera wines and they are often perceived as being of lower quality. This study evaluated the chemistry and sensory perception of whole-cluster (WC) fermented "Frontenac" and "Marquette" red wines from Iowa (F-ISU, M-ISU) and "Marquette" red wines from Minnesota (M-UMN). Three conditions were compared: Control 0% WC (w/w), 25% WC (w/w), and 50% WC (w/w). The 50% WC wines had significantly higher iron-reactive phenolics, tannin, and anthocyanin contents than control wines. The color intensity in 50% WC wines was maintained after 4 months of aging. A tasting evaluation was conducted with the "Marquette" wines from both states and untrained panelists preferred 50% WC "Marquette" wines over control wines. This study showed promising results on the use of 50% (w/w) whole clusters as a pre-fermentative technique to improve "Marquette" and "Frontenac" red wine quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vegetative phase change is a key trait in plant development and marks the transition from juvenile to adult growth phases. In maize (Zea mays L.), juvenile plants and plants with a late phase change can be identified by the increased production of tillers, aerial roots, and distinctive epicuticular wax. Resistance to agronomically significant pathogens can also differ between juvenile and adult plants. Using last leaf with juvenile wax as the target of selection, the maize population Minnesota 11 underwent 16 cycles of divergent selection. The objectives of this research were to identify emergent trends for each trait and to determine the magnitude and direction of phenotypic changes over long‐term selection compared to the source population. Phenotypic data on plant architecture traits, ear traits, and common rust resistance were collected in 2020 and 2021 by concurrently growing plants from selection cycles representing both directions of selection. Last leaf with juvenile wax, the direct target of selection increased to leaf 17.8 in the late phase change population and decreased to leaf 5 in the early phase change population from leaf 9 in the source population. Late vegetative phase change was positively correlated with increased common rust infection and plant height, and negatively correlated with ear size traits. This study shows that the observed phenotypic changes follow patterns of genetic variation consistent with divergent selection, but with possible effects of inbreeding. Background: COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in the United States is high, with at least 63 million unvaccinated individuals to date. Socioeconomically disadvantaged populations experience lower COVID-19 vaccination rates despite facing a disproportionate COVID-19 burden. Objective: To assess the factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine acceptance among under-resourced, adult patients. Methods: Participants were patients receiving care at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in St. Paul, Minnesota. Data were collected via multiple modes over 2 phases in 2020 (self-administered electronic survey) and 2021 (study team-administered survey by telephone, self-administered written survey) to promote diversity and inclusion for study participation. The primary outcome was COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. Using logistic regression analysis, associations between vaccine acceptance and factors including risk perception, concerns about the COVID-19 vaccine, social determinants of health (SDOH), co-morbidities, pandemic-induced hardships, and stress were assessed by adjusted odds ratios (AORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Childhood malnutrition and its later life effects were important concerns in European and North American social policy in the early twentieth century. However, there have been few studies of the long-term socioeconomic consequences of malnutrition in childhood. We use a unique longitudinal dataset to provide credible causal estimates of the effects of childhood nutrition on early-adult educational and employment outcomes. Our dataset includes 2,499 children in Saint Paul, Minnesota who were weighed and measured in a national children's health survey in 1918/1919 at 0–6 years of age. We observe those same people in the 1920, 1930 and 1940 U.S. censuses allowing us to measure childhood socioeconomic status, adolescent school attendance (1930) and early-adult wages, and employment and educational attainment (1940). Examining variation between biological siblings, we are able to obtain credibly causal estimates of the relationship between childhood stature and weight and later life outcomes, largely canceling out the bias otherwise resulting from their joint correlation with genes and socioeconomic background. Because the initial survey located children within households, we identify the effect of differences in early childhood nutrition from differences between male siblings. Consistent with contemporary evidence from developing countries, we find that being taller and heavier in early childhood is associated with better educational and labor market outcomes. Identifying all effects within families to control for socioeconomic background and family structure, we find a standard deviation increase in BMI in early childhood was associated with a 3% increase in weekly earnings and that boys who were heavier for their age at the initial survey were 10% less likely to be unemployed in 1940. Cyprinid herpesvirus‐3 (CyHV‐3) is an important pathogen of common carp (Cyprinus carpio, carp) causing significant economic and ecological impacts worldwide. The recent emergence of CyHV‐3 in the Upper Midwest region of the United States has raised questions related to the disease ecology and host specificity of CyHV‐3 in wild carp populations. To determine the prevalence of CyHV‐3 in wild populations of fishes in Minnesota, we surveyed five lakes in 2019 in which the virus was known to have caused mass mortality events in carp from 2017 to 2018. A total of 28 species (n = 756 total fish) of native fishes and 730 carp were screened for the presence of CyHV‐3 DNA using specific qPCR. None of the native fish tissues tested positive for CyHV‐3 although the prevalence of CyHV‐3 in carp was 10%–50% in the five lakes. A single lake (Lake Elysian) with a 50% DNA detection rate and evidence of ongoing transmission and CyHV‐3‐associated mortality was surveyed again in 2020 from April to September. During this period, none of the tissues from 24 species (n = 607 total fish) tested positive for CyHV‐3 though CyHV‐3 DNA and mRNA (indicating viral replication) was detected in carp tissues during the sampling period. CyHV‐3 DNA was detected most often in brain samples without evidence of replication, potentially indicating that brain tissue is a site for CyHV‐3 latency. Paired qPCR and ELISA testing for Lake Elysian in 2019–2020 identified young carp (especially males) to be the primary group impacted by CyHV‐3‐associated mortality and acute infections, but with no positive detections in juvenile carp. Seroprevalence of carp from Lake Elysian was 57% in 2019, 92% in April of 2020 and 97% in September 2020. These results further corroborate the host specificity of CyHV‐3 to carp in mixed wild populations of fishes in Minnesota and provide additional insights into the ecological niche of CyHV‐3 in shallow lake populations of carp in North America. Abandoned agricultural fields (old fields) are thought to accumulate soil organic matter (SOM) after cultivation cessation. However, most research on old fields soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) sequestration has focused on the surface (10 or 30 cm depth) and overlooked their dynamics below 30 cm. This study quantified C and N stock change in both the surface and subsurface with repeated inventories over 13 years. We conducted repeated soil surveys in 8 old fields that form a 64-year chronosequence at Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve (CCESR), Minnesota in 2001 and 2014. On average, soil C and N accumulated by 16.5 ± 14.5 g C m−2 y−1 and 1.0 ± 1.1 g N m−2 y−1 in the surface (0–20 cm). In contrast, we found soil C and N decreased by 78.9 ± 26.3 g C m−2 y−1 and 12.9 ± 2.42 g N m−2 y−1 in the subsurface (20–100 cm). The C and N losses in the subsurface soil were correlated with low deep root biomass; the majority of roots are located in the top 20 cm of soil. Such root distribution may be attributed to the continuing dominance of nonnative and shallow-rooted C3 grasses and the lack of legumes after field abandonment. This study shows that agriculture has a long legacy effect after abandonment on subsurface soil C and N. Some abandoned agricultural fields can continue to lose C and N because surface C and N accumulation does not offset the ongoing deeper soil C and N losses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Complex ecological and human‐influenced factors that are characteristic of chronic wasting disease (CWD) have created substantial and unique challenges for effective management in free‐ranging cervids. We sought to summarize and characterize management experiences and actions from 30 U.S. states, 4 Canadian provinces, and 3 European countries that have direct experience with CWD. We surveyed wildlife agencies that had detected CWD in their free‐ranging cervid population and collected information from journal articles, published reports, and agency webpages. We report management approaches and their apparent impacts by state, provincial, or national jurisdiction during 3 stages of response to CWD: 1) pre‐detection, 2) initial response, and 3) altered response. Agencies took a proactive approach to CWD during the pre‐detection phase; 12 of the 24 responding agencies had a weighted‐surveillance program in place and 17 had regulations aimed at disease prevention. There was no apparent difference in initial apparent prevalence of CWD among agencies with weighted surveillance in place and those without, but complicating factors, such as differing sampling methods and sample size, were present. Agencies reported 5 common surveillance strategies, and first detections were primarily from sampling hunter‐harvested deer. Bans or restrictions on interstate movement of carcasses or live animals and increased bag limits were common responses to the detection of CWD and were used by 83% and 78% of the 24 responding agencies, respectively. Similarly, adapted surveillance was a common response to CWD detection; 14 of the 24 agencies either initiated or adjusted their weighted surveillance program following detection. However, of the 20 U.S. states and 6 Canadian provinces that have not yet detected CWD, only 3 are currently applying weighted surveillance approaches to their CWD sampling efforts. As demonstrated by New York and Minnesota, localized eradication of CWD may be possible if it is detected in its emergent stage when there are few infected deer in an area. We found that 4 of the 20 U.S. states and 2 of the 6 Canadian provinces that have yet to detect CWD had a response plan available online. Further analyses to assess the impacts of various management approaches on the spatial and temporal trajectory of CWD prevalence requires more data collection and reporting, such as consistent and fine‐scale surveillance in management and control areas. We recommend that agencies be proactive in public messaging of CWD response plans well before initial detection and that cervid managers dealing with CWD collaborate regularly with one another to share their variable and collective experiences. To date, only one published study has tested the predictive validity of the Texas Christian University–Criminal Thinking Scales (TCU-CTS), and no studies have tested whether these scales are predictive of prison misconduct. Using a sample of more than 2,000 people incarcerated in Minnesota's prison system, this study examined the predictive validity of the TCU-CTS with multiple measures of prison misconduct. The results showed the overall TCU-CTS score significantly predicted misconduct, although the strength of this association was relatively modest (AUC = 0.62). Among the six scales on the TCU-CTS, Cold-Heartedness significantly predicted both measures of misconduct, whereas Power Orientation and Criminal Rationalization were each significantly associated with one misconduct measure. Although immigrant negative perceived context of reception (PCOR), perceptions of the opportunities and degree of acceptance in an immigrant‐receiving community, has been linked with compromised adolescent well‐being, receiving contexts may differ by region and for youth from different ethnic backgrounds. The current study examines how negative PCOR and factors that promote resilience differentially shape mental health among Hispanic and Somali adolescents in Minnesota. Hispanic (n = 163) and Somali (n = 186) first‐ and second‐generation youth aged 12–19 completed a survey on negative PCOR, assets and resources (i.e., ethnic identity, social support, religious participation), and mental well‐being (i.e., anxiety and depressive symptoms). Parents and caregivers also completed a survey on PCOR and social support. Adolescent negative PCOR, relative to parent/caregiver negative PCOR, was associated with higher adolescent anxiety and depressive symptoms. Religious participation and social support, reported by both parent/caregiver and adolescent, was associated with lower anxiety and depressive symptoms. Additionally, among Hispanic adolescents, social support buffered the effects of negative PCOR on depressive symptoms. Conversely, strong ethnic identity was associated with higher depressive symptoms for both groups, suggesting acculturative and assimilative pressures play an important role in adolescent mental health. Although social ties can be weakened postmigration, our results indicate that social and religious resources remain beneficial. Given that by the end of the next decade over 50% of the US youth population will identify as part of a racial or ethnic minority group, positive postimmigration adaptation is a critical public health concern. The field of wildlife conservation is comprised of a variety of players with different contexts and approaches. Zoos and aquariums, historically largely focused on public entertainment, are shifting more towards conservation-minded missions and can play a unique role in wildlife conservation by leveraging their distinct assets. The Minnesota Zoo is an AZA-accredited institution and an agency of the State of Minnesota that has been conducting wildlife conservation for over 40 years. Here, we review our current portfolio of local field projects, including initiatives targeting pollinators, native mussels, turtles, and bison, using several considerations to structure and better understand how our unique context has shaped our work. Our designation as a state agency has impacted our initiatives by necessitating a focus on local efforts and has facilitated many partnerships with other government agencies. Indeed, partnerships have been vital to our success and have shaped our programs significantly since their inception. All of the Zoo's conservation initiatives are built on a bedrock of sound science, and we continue to contribute to the field through research, utilizing the expertise of department staff. In addition, the various funding streams that support our programs have dramatically shaped our work and have created some siloing of staff within the department. However, grant funding can serve as a buffer against the impacts of economic uncertainty, as evidenced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lastly, our programs have expanded and our objectives have pivoted over the years in response to changing needs and opportunities; such flexibility—and increased flexibility for our staff—is imperative to the future success of these efforts. The Minnesota Zoo's narrative is unique and helps us understand how we can continue to most effectively carry out local conservation efforts. As we work to protect habitats and save species from extinction, it is important to utilize the distinct assets that each organization can contribute in order to have the greatest collective impact. Introduction: Sugarbeets account for 55 to 60% of U.S. sugar production. Cercospora leaf spot (CLS), primarily caused by the fungal pathogen Cercospora beticola, is a major foliar disease of sugarbeet. Since leaf tissue is a primary site of pathogen survival between growing seasons, this study evaluated management strategies to reduce this source of inoculum. Methods: Fall- and spring-applied treatments were evaluated over three years at two study sites. Treatments included standard plowing or tilling immediately post-harvest, as well as the following alternatives to tillage: a propane-fueled heat treatment either in the fall immediately pre-harvest or in the spring prior to planting, and a desiccant (saflufenacil) application seven days pre-harvest. After fall treatments, leaf samples were evaluated to determine C. beticola viability. The following season, inoculum pressure was measured by monitoring CLS severity in a susceptible beet variety planted into the same plots and by counting lesions on highly susceptible sentinel beets placed into the field at weekly intervals (fall treatments only). Results: No significant reductions in C. beticola survival or CLS were observed following fall-applied desiccant. The fall heat treatment, however, significantly reduced lesion sporulation (2019-20 and 2020-21, P < 0.0001; 2021-22, P < 0.05) and C. beticola isolation (2019-20, P < 0.05) in at-harvest samples. Fall heat treatments also significantly reduced detectable sporulation for up to 70- (2021-22, P < 0.01) or 90-days post-harvest (2020-21, P < 0.05). Reduced numbers of CLS lesions were observed on sentinel beets in heat-treated plots from May 26-June 2 (P < 0.05) and June 2-9 (P < 0.01) in 2019, as well as June 15-22 (P < 0.01) in 2020. Both fall- and spring-applied heat treatments also reduced the area under the disease progress curve for CLS assessed the season after treatments were applied (Michigan 2020 and 2021, P < 0.05; Minnesota 2019, P < 0.05; 2021, P < 0.0001). Discussion: Overall, heat treatments resulted in CLS reductions at levels comparable to standard tillage, with more consistent reductions across year and location. SARS-CoV-2 is primarily transmitted through person-to-person contacts. It is important to collect information on age-specific contact patterns because SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility, transmission, and morbidity vary by age. To reduce the risk of infection, social distancing measures have been implemented. Social contact data, which identify who has contact with whom especially by age and place are needed to identify high-risk groups and serve to inform the design of non-pharmaceutical interventions. We estimated and used negative binomial regression to compare the number of daily contacts during the first round (April–May 2020) of the Minnesota Social Contact Study, based on respondent's age, gender, race/ethnicity, region, and other demographic characteristics. We used information on the age and location of contacts to generate age-structured contact matrices. Finally, we compared the age-structured contact matrices during the stay-at-home order to pre-pandemic matrices. During the state-wide stay-home order, the mean daily number of contacts was 5.7. We found significant variation in contacts by age, gender, race, and region. Adults between 40 and 50 years had the highest number of contacts. The way race/ethnicity was coded influenced patterns between groups. Respondents living in Black households (which includes many White respondents living in inter-racial households with black family members) had 2.7 more contacts than respondents in White households; we did not find this same pattern when we focused on individual's reported race/ethnicity. Asian or Pacific Islander respondents or in API households had approximately the same number of contacts as respondents in White households. Respondents in Hispanic households had approximately two fewer contacts compared to White households, likewise Hispanic respondents had three fewer contacts than White respondents. Most contacts were with other individuals in the same age group. George Floyd's murder by a Minnesota police officer sparked outrage, protests, and a re-evaluation of racial inequities in America. Within criminology, we argue, that re-evaluation should include the Latino Paradox, the idea that Latino communities are an exception—a paradox—in that, while they face economic deprivation, they also possess a magical something that makes them resistant to social problems like crime. Unfortunately, this compels the more delicate question; what is the deficiency in Black communities that makes them so vulnerable to crime? However, as we argue here, the Latino Paradox forces a false comparison. Its assumptions with respect to crime are factually incorrect, it demeans Blacks by neglecting their historical context, it romanticizes the Latino experience, and it misdirects policy making. It also leads to lazy theorizing by suggesting that the Latino Paradox forces a re-evaluation of a major criminology theory, Social Disorganization. Indeed, Social Disorganization Theory can adequately explain past and present links between immigration and crime. In light of these problems, it is time to drop the Latino Paradox as an explanation for the race/ethnic differences in crime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction/Objectives: Safe fish consumption is important for people who are or could become pregnant. A health system in Minnesota partnered with the Minnesota Department of Health to develop and disseminate messages to promote safe fish consumption for this population via the ChooseYourFish initiative. The ChooseYourFish message was delivered through 5 channels: the Healthy Pregnancy Program (HPP) with phone-based coaching, a clinic brochure, in the clinic after visit summary (AVS), direct mailing of the brochure with a letter, and in images on clinic waiting room monitors. Methods: We designed a pragmatic evaluation to understand the likelihood that each channel would result in awareness of the message and increase a recipient's intent to act on the information. We surveyed 1050 women aged 18 to 40 in March-May 2020. Results are reported with descriptive statistics. Results: The survey was completed by 524 respondents (51%). Respondents receiving the ChooseYourFish message through any channel except clinic monitors reported a higher awareness of recommendations about eating fish (42%-56%) than respondents in the no-message comparison group (21%). The after visit summary and Healthy Pregnancy Program channels had more confidence in following recommendations (50%-54%) and showed more intention to eat fish (61%-62%) compared to lower-intensity channels (24%-31% and 19%-32%, respectively). Conclusions: Messages delivered by an often-trusted source (eg, healthcare provider) were more likely to increase confidence and intent. Despite the trend toward online health information, physical brochures still have large reach. Repetition of exposure may be important. Because all communication channels have advantages and drawbacks, using multiple delivery channels is appropriate in communication campaigns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2022, a benchmarking survey was completed to gage learner satisfaction with library services, spaces, and resources across 10 Mayo Clinic Libraries. The discussion for this project began around a previously published survey of what medical students wanted from their library. Librarians were asked if Mayo Clinic Libraries could do a similar survey, as a full survey of the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science had not been done. Nuts from hybrid hazels (Corylus americana Walter × Corylus avellana L.) are a burgeoning, novel industry for the Great Lakes region of the United States. As such, scant information exists about the pest complex, although stem-boring beetles in the genus Agrilus Curtis (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) have been noted by growers as potential pests. Here, we report results of a comprehensive survey of 186 plants in a hybrid hazel planting consisting of nine cultivars in southeastern Minnesota affected by stem borers. Sixteen percent of the hybrid hazel plants exhibited between 25 and 100% buprestid associated dieback. Morphological and molecular identification of the adult and larval buprestids colonizing hybrid hazel plants revealed that the hazel stem borer, Agrilus pseudocoryli Fisher, was the only species present. Adult A. pseudocoryli were observed on plants between 8 June and 13 July 2021. Plants with higher damage ratings from the hazel stem borer were more likely to exhibit signs of eastern filbert blight (Anisogramma anomala Peck), a fungal pathogen virulent to C. avellana. Some hazel cultivars were more susceptible to damage from stem borers than others. Taken together, our findings suggest that the hazel stem borer has the potential to impact hybrid hazelnut yield. We speculate that a regional drought may have promoted increased populations of the hazel stem borer, as native Agrilus species are often secondary pests that become problematic when environmental stresses decrease host resistance. More research is needed to elucidate interactions between hazels, buprestid pests, and environmental conditions to predict impacts on crop yields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Psychiatric patients have two to three-fold higher risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality as compared to the general population. Despite the high rate of cardiovascular disease, about 80% of patients with psychiatric disorders have fewer opportunities for cardiovascular disease screening. Early detection of subclinical cardiovascular disease using an electrocardiogram can improve the clinical outcomes of these patients. However, in Ethiopia, no previous study had been conducted on electrocardiogram abnormalities and associated factors among psychiatric patients. Hence, this study aimed to assess the electrocardiogram abnormalities and associated factors among psychiatric patients attending follow-up at Jimma Medical Center, Jimma, Ethiopia. Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study was carried out among psychiatric patients attending Jimma Medical Center Psychiatry Clinic from October 14 to December 10, 2021. An interviewer-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic data, behavioral factors, disease-related and medication-related data. Anthropometry and blood pressure were measured following the standard protocols. A resting 12 lead ECG was recorded according to the standard recording protocol of the Minnesota code. Data were entered into Epi data version 4.6 and exported to SPSS version 25. Results of the descriptive analysis were summarized by frequencies, means, and proportions, and presented by using tables and figures. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regressions were performed. p value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Result: A total of 315 psychiatric patients were included in the present study. The mean age (SD) of the respondents was 36.27 ± 10.85 years. ECG abnormalities were identified among 191 (60.6%) respondents. Age older than 40 years [AOR = 3.31: 95% CI 1.58–6.89], treatment with antipsychotics [AOR = 4.16: 95% CI 1.25–13.79], polytherapy [AOR = 3.13: 95% CI 1.15–8.62], having schizophrenia [AOR = 3.11: 95% CI 1.20–8.11], and illness duration of > 10 years [AOR = 4.25: 95% CI 1.72–10.49] were significantly associated with ECG abnormalities. Conclusions: In the present study, six out of ten respondents had ECG abnormalities. Age of the respondents, treatment with antipsychotics, having schizophrenia, polytherapy and illness duration of > 10 years were significant predictors of ECG abnormalities. Routine ECG investigation should be performed in the psychiatry treatment setting and further studies are recommended to delineate factors affecting ECG abnormalities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

What distinguishes family and consumer sciences (FCS) teachers from other teachers in a K-12 setting is the population they teach and the subject matter taught (Poirier et al., 2017). FCS teachers teach students social, emotional, and cognitive skills including cooking, sewing, finance, life/relational skills, and child development. This variety of skills is taught through courses that synthesize foundational components of science, math, reading, and communication--skills that are ideal for preparing students for careers in agriculture, architecture/construction, hospitality management, human services, and many others (Minnesota Department of Education, 2019). FCS teachers are tasked with teaching subjects that are not strictly academic--they are life and career skills that are invaluable to their students. This responsibility has its own set of challenges, which can include scheduling difficulties, low funding, and increasing class sizes. One of the most prominent issues is the separation from other faculty that FCS teachers experience due to the eclectic nature of their courses (Godbey & Johnson, 2011). Quite often, schools have only one FCS teacher. This limited connection with colleagues can contribute to feelings of loneliness and frustration by FCS teachers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Winter oilseed cash cover crops are gaining popularity in integrated weed management programs for suppressing weeds. A study was conducted at two field sites (Fargo, North Dakota, and Morris, Minnesota) to determine the freezing tolerance and weed-suppressing traits of winter canola/rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) and winter camelina [Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz] in the Upper Midwestern USA. The top 10 freezing tolerant accessions from a phenotyped population of winter canola/rapeseed were bulked and planted at both locations along with winter camelina (cv. Joelle) as a check. To phenotype our entire winter B. napus population (621 accessions) for freezing tolerance, seeds were also bulked and planted at both locations. All B. napus and camelina were no-till seeded at Fargo and Morris at two planting dates, late August (PD1) and mid-September (PD2) 2019. Data for winter survival of oilseed crops (plants m−2) and their corresponding weed suppression (plants m−2 and dry matter m−2) were collected on two sampling dates (SD) in May and June 2020. Crop and SD were significant (p < 0.05) for crop plant density at both locations, and PD in Fargo and crop x PD interaction in Morris were significant for weed dry matter. At Morris and Fargo, PD1 produced greater winter B. napus survival (28% and 5%, respectively) and PD2 produced higher camelina survival (79% and 72%, respectively). Based on coefficient of determination (r2), ~50% of weed density was explained by camelina density, whereas ≤20% was explained by B. napus density at both locations. Camelina from PD2 suppressed weed dry matter by >90% of fallow at both locations, whereas weed dry matter in B. napus was not significantly different from fallow at either PD. Genotyping of overwintering canola/rapeseed under field conditions identified nine accessions that survived at both locations, which also had excellent freezing tolerance under controlled conditions. Economic hardship may lead to a wide range of negative outcomes, including violence. However, existing literature on economic hardship and violence is limited by reliance on official reports of violence and conflation of different measures of economic hardship. The goals of this study are to measure how violence-related injuries are associated with five measures of county-level economic shocks: unemployment rate, male mass layoffs, female mass layoffs, foreclosure rate, and unemployment rate change, measured cross-sectionally and by a 1-year lag. This study measures three subtypes of violence outcomes (child abuse, elder abuse, and intimate partner violence). Yearly county-level data were obtained on violence-related injuries and economic measures from 2005 to 2012 for all 87 counties in Minnesota. Negative binomial models were run regressing the case counts of each violence outcome at the county-year level on each economic indicator modeled individually, with population denominator offsets to yield incidence rate ratios. Crude models were run first, then county-level socio-demographic variables and year were added to each model, and finally fully-adjusted models were run including all socio-demographic variables plus all economic indicators simultaneously. In the fully-adjusted models, a county's higher foreclosure rate is the strongest and most consistently associated with an increase in all violence subtypes. Unemployment rate is the second strongest and most consistent economic risk factor for all violence subtypes. Lastly, there appears to be an impact of gender specific to economic impacts on child abuse; specifically, male mass-lay-offs were associated with increased rates while female mass-lay-offs were associated with decreased rates. Understanding the associations of different types of economic hardship with a range of violence outcomes can aid in developing more holistic prevention and intervention efforts. Land managers increasingly use wetland restoration to improve water quality, particularly in cultivated landscapes. In agricultural wetland restoration, managers regularly excavate accumulated sediments eroded from the surrounding landscape to increase water storage capacity, decrease invasive species cover, or improve water quality. However, it is unclear whether the effects of sediment excavation are influenced by wetland hydroperiod. Additionally, we lack data on how long excavation effects persist in restored wetlands. We examined dissolved nutrient concentrations (i.e., NH4+, NO3–, total dissolved N, soluble reactive P, total dissolved P, and dissolved organic C) as proxies for water quality in 54 restored agricultural wetlands ranging from 1 to 10 y post-restoration in the Prairie Pothole Region of west central Minnesota, USA. In 26 of these wetlands, restoration practitioners restored natural (i.e., either seasonal or semipermanent inundation) hydrological regimes by removing subsurface tile drainage and plugging surface drainage ditches (business-as-usual treatment). In 28 wetlands, practitioners removed accumulated sediment and redeposited it on the surrounding landscape (excavated treatment) prior to restoring hydrology. We found that wetlands in the excavated treatment group initially experienced reduced dissolved P concentrations, but over time P levels increased, particularly in wetlands with shorter hydroperiods. Excavated wetlands had lower NH4+ and dissolved organic C concentrations compared with business-as-usual wetlands, but the trend was driven by differences between restoration treatments in semipermanent wetlands. N and P dynamics were almost universally related to hydroperiod, both immediately following restoration and over the ensuing years. We postulate that the effects of hydroperiod are likely related to differences in redox conditions via direct mechanisms (water level fluctuations related to hydroperiod) and indirect mechanisms (development of dense emergent macrophyte communities in seasonal wetlands). In basins with seasonal hydroperiod, inorganic N concentrations decreased over time and inorganic P concentrations increased, suggesting net P mobilization concurrent with growing N limitation. Our results illustrate that hydroperiod regulates the expression of legacy P following wetland restoration, with little long-term effect of sediment removal on water quality outcomes. Visible disruptions of appropriate food distribution for end consumers during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic prompted calls for an urgent, renewed look at how the U.S. agri-food system is impacted by and responds to pandemics, natural disasters, and human-made crises. Previous studies suggest the COVID-19 pandemic yielded uneven impacts across agri-food supply chain segments and regions. For a rigorously comparable assessment of the impact of COVID-19 on agri-food businesses, a survey was administered from February to April 2021 to five segments of the agri-food supply chain in three study regions (California, Florida, and the two-state region of Minnesota-Wisconsin). Results (N = 870) measuring the self-reported changes in quarterly business revenue in 2020 compared to businesses' typical experience pre-COVID-19 suggest significant differences across supply chain segments and regions. In the Minnesota-Wisconsin region, restaurants took the largest hit and the upstream supply chains were relatively unaffected. In California, however, the negative impacts were felt throughout the supply chain. Two factors likely contributed to regional differences: (1) regional disparities in pandemic evolution and governance and (2) structural differences in regional agri-food systems. Regionalized and localized planning and the development of best-practices will be necessary for the U.S. agri-food system to enhance preparedness for and resilience to future pandemics, natural disasters, and human-made crises. Background: Adolescent e-cigarette use has increased dramatically in recent years and is quickly becoming a serious public health issue. While studies have identified the influence of social norms on the use of traditional cigarettes, few have examined these factors in the context of e-cigarettes and other vaping devices. Objective: The goal of this study was to examine social norms predictors of past 30-day e-cigarette use among high school students in 10 communities located in Minnesota. Results: In our sample (N = 3,285), students who believe most students in their school vape daily are more likely to have vaped in the past 30 days than those who believe most students vape weekly or less frequently. Further, students were likely to have used e-cigarettes in the past 30 days if they perceived that most students approved of vaping (i.e., they disagreed with the statement that, "vaping is not a good thing for anyone their age to do"). Findings from this study highlight social norms related to perceptions that increase the likelihood of past 30-day e-cigarette use. Conclusions: Results from this study lend themselves to norms-based prevention science strategies that are critical to reducing e-cigarette use among high school students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Well publicized incidents of bias-motivated violence in the United States during the 2010s have demonstrated that hate crimes are on the rise. Bias-motivated crimes fragment communities and disintegrate the "social fabric of society" more than equivalent offenses that are not motivated by hate, exacerbating the intensity of fear, animosity, and intergroup tension in marginalized communities that experience these incidents. We examine the distribution of Minnesota's communities reporting bias-motivated crimes. Data on the locations of these communities affected by bias-motivated crimes were obtained from the Minnesota Uniform Crime Reports for the years of 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. This article explores the notion of the classroom as a sacred space, through the lenses of Indigeneity and Waldorf-inspired practices to examine the ways pedagogical practices create spaces for learning and holistic well-being. Using a series of qualitative ethnographic studies highlighting courses at higher education institutions in Arizona and Minnesota, this article examines student reflections on experiences within the courses and curricula. Student responses point to conceptions of the course "rituals" that fostered emotional and mental wellness and contrasted these to courses in the "real world" that did the opposite. The three decades from 1940 through 1970 mark a turning point in the spatial scale of Black–White residential segregation in the United States compared with earlier years. We decompose metropolitan segregation into three components: segregation within the city, within the suburbs, and between the city and its suburbs. We then show that extreme levels of segregation were well established in most cities by 1940, and they changed only modestly by 1970. In this period, changes in segregation were greater at the metropolitan scale, driven by racially selective population growth in the suburbs. We also examine major sources of rising segregation, including region, metropolitan total, and Black population sizes, and indicators of redlining in the central cities based on risk maps prepared by the Home Owners Loan Corporation (HOLC) in the late 1930s. In addition to overall regional differences, segregation between the city and suburbs and within suburbia increased more in metropolitan areas with larger Black populations, but this relationship was found only in the North. In contrast to some recent theorizing, there is no association between preparation of an HOLC risk map or the share of city neighborhoods that were redlined and subsequent change in any component of segregation. Objectives. To report insurance-based discrimination rates for nonelderly adults with private, public, or no insurance between 2011 and 2019, a period marked by passage and implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and threats to it. Methods. We used 2011–2019 data from the biennial Minnesota Health Access Survey. Each year, about 4000 adults aged 18 to 64 years report experiences with insurance-based discrimination. Using logistic regressions, we examined associations between insurance-based discrimination and (1) sociodemographic factors and (2) indicators of access. Results. Insurance-based discrimination was stable over time and consistently related to insurance type: approximately 4% for adults with private insurance compared with adults with public insurance (21%) and no insurance (27%). Insurance-based discrimination persistently interfered with confidence in getting needed care and forgoing care. Conclusions. Policy changes from 2011 to 2019 affected access to health insurance, but high rates of insurance-based discrimination among adults with public insurance or no insurance were impervious to such changes. Background: Polygenic risk testing examines variation across multiple genes to estimate a risk score for a particular disease, including risk scores for many common, chronic health conditions. Although polygenic risk information (PRI) may be a promising tool for enhancing preventive counseling and facilitating early identification of disease, its potential impact on primary-care encounters and disease prevention efforts has not been well characterized. Methods: We conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews of patients to assess their understandings of PRI and their beliefs about its relevance to disease prevention. Results: We completed interviews with 19 participants. Participants described enthusiasm for the generation of PRI and recognized its utility for disease prevention. Participants also described the value of PRI as limited if not corroborated by non-genetic risk factors. Finally, participants noted that PRI, by itself, would be insufficient as a trigger for initiating many preventive interventions. Conclusion: PRI has the potential to become an important tool in primary care. However, patient views about PRI as well as the complexities of disease prevention in the primary care context may limit the impact of PRI on disease prevention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Warming is expected to increase the net release of carbon from peatland soils, contributing to future warming. This positive feedback may be moderated by the response of peatland vegetation to rising atmospheric [CO2] or to increased soil nutrient availability. We asked whether a gradient of whole-ecosystem warming (from + 0 °C to + 9 °C) would increase plant-available nitrogen and phosphorus in an ombrotrophic bog in northern Minnesota, USA, and whether elevated [CO2] would modify the nutrient response. We tracked changes in plant-available nutrients across space and through time and in comparison with other nutrient pools, and assessed whether nutrient warming responses were captured by a point version of the land-surface model, ELM-SPRUCE. We found that warming exponentially increased plant-available ammonium and phosphate, but that nutrient dynamics were unaffected by elevated [CO2]. The warming response increased by an order of magnitude between the first and fourth year of the experimental manipulation, perhaps because of dramatic mortality of Sphagnum mosses in the surface peat of the warmest treatments. However, neither the magnitude nor the temporal dynamics of the responses were captured by ELM-SPRUCE. Relative increases in plant-available ammonium and phosphate with warming were similar, but the response varied across raised hummocks and depressed hollows and with peat depth. Plant-available nutrient dynamics were only loosely correlated with inorganic and organic porewater nutrients, likely representing different processes. Future predictions of peatland nutrient availability under climate change scenarios must account for dynamic changes in nutrient acquisition by plants and microbes, as well as microtopography and peat depth. Purpose: Nursing turnover is a leading cause of inefficiency in health care delivery. Few studies have examined turnover among nurses who work in rural areas. Methods: We accessed human resources data that tracked hiring and terminations from a large health system operating in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota between January 2016 and December 2017. Our study sample included 7,634 registered nurses, 1,765 of whom worked in a rural community. Within the health system, there were 27 affiliated hospitals, 17 of which were designated critical access hospitals. We estimated nursing turnover rates overall and stratified turnover rates by available demographic and occupational characteristics, including whether the nurse worked in a community with an affiliated acute care hospital or critical access hospital. Findings: Overall, 19% of nurses left their position between January 2016 and December 2017. Turnover rates were associated with state, nurse gender and age, and occupational tenure, but were similar in urban and rural areas. Of note, turnover rates were significantly higher in communities without an affiliated acute care hospital or critical access hospital. Conclusion: Between 2016 and 2017, nearly 1 in 5 nurses working in this health system left their position. Turnover rates differed based on nurse demographics and selected occupational characteristics, including tenure. We also found higher turnover rates among nurses who worked in communities without an affiliated hospital, which points to a potential but unexplored benefit of hospitals in rural areas.
