Kinmen, located in Taiwan's remote border area, has become increasingly embedded in the global economy by opening its border for trade and tourism with China. Previous rural youth studies mainly focus on decisions and experiences of migration while neglecting the experiences of those who stay in their hometown. This paper aims to fill this gap by investigating the experiences and subjectivities of young people who stay in the periphery for adulthood transitions. Based on our ethnographic data gathered in Kinmen, it shows how the enlarged employment with the new markets supported by Chinese tourists bring hope for the youth. At the same time, our findings explore how the highly dependent tourism economy and the overdependence on a single source of tourists bring them worry and uncertainty. Analyses of the paper highlight spatial elements in the economic, cultural and political processes of structuring young people's lives and subjectivities under globalization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the perspective of IoT intelligent analysis of the 2017 grade advertising class of Fujian-Taiwan cooperation School of Communication College of Fujian Normal University before and after going to Taiwan, this paper studies the impact of Fujian-Taiwan cooperation on the class network by comparing the advertising professional classes that do not accept the Fujian-Taiwan cooperation. From the overall network density of the class, the use of WeChat promotes the information flow of the whole network; Fujian-Taiwan cooperation in running schools significantly improves the class cohesion of Fujian-Taiwan classes; the cohesion of professional classes in the school-based department without the cooperation between Fujian and Taiwan has not been improved. From the perspective of centrality analysis and structural holes: the experimental group and the control group before going to Taiwan have the characteristics of partial female and class committee, and the excellent academic performance is not the necessary condition for the opinion leaders of convention number; the characteristics of the opinion leaders of the control group in the two periods before and after going to Taiwan have not changed a lot, with girls and class committee as the main characteristics; after going to Taiwan, the characteristics of opinion leaders in the experimental group changed greatly, with more boys, more excellent students, and less importance of class committee. Chiang, T., 2022. Multiple-criteria decision-making attributes approach for carbon-reduction construction in small islands. Journal of Coastal Research, 38(2), 310–318. The group decision-making with dependent attributes problem (GDMDAP) is an increasingly important problem for small islands in the construction industry to achieve carbon-reduction and sustainability goals with a win-win vendor selection process. In this paper, an innovative approach that integrates the stochastic matrix and the VIseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) method is applied to solve the GDMDAP. The 795 records from the 47 carbon-reduction projects in Kinmen, an island with zero carbon visions in Taiwan, are surveyed from 2014 to 2021. The 67% decision attributes in the case study are dependent based on the Spearman's rho test. The test verifies that decision-making is difficult to apply to the traditional multiple-criteria decision-making method for carbon-reduction projects. The analytic network process method is also difficult to estimate because of the range problem of ratio variable scale. Based on the stochastic matrix and modified linear normalization, a 0–100 scale decision matrix with dependent attributes is transferred to a 0–1 scale with less than a two times scores gap. The group VIKOR method is used to integrate the acceptable advantage and acceptable stability. The performances of the traditional ranking method and the proposed approach are compared with one of the 47 carbon-reduction projects. • The literatures on subterranean geopolitics have paid insufficient attention to issues of peace. • The concept of affective atmosphere helps to flesh out the elemental and embodied dimensions of subterranean geopolitics. • The paper uses the case study of the Zhaishan Tunnel to show how it serves as a rapprochement tourism site. • Visitors of Zhaishan Tunnel (re)negotiate peaceful China-Taiwan relations in this subterranean space. Geopolitical studies on the subterranean have tended to portray underground spaces (including tunnels and caves) as closely imbricated with warfare, violence and militarism. This paper departs from existing literatures insofar as it explores how peaceful ideas and relationships can similarly be fostered through the subterranean realm. Using the case of the Zhaishan Tunnel located on the Taiwanese island of Kinmen, we demonstrate how this site has converted from a defensive structure against the military antagonisms from mainland China to one that is largely associated with rapprochement tourism for the cultivation of benign China-Taiwan relations. Specifically, by drawing on the concept of affective atmosphere, we argue that the elemental and material aspects of the tunnel have been strategically deployed to affectively shore up Chinese and Taiwanese visitors' collective memories in order to re-orientate their dispositions towards peaceful cross-strait futures. In so doing, we demonstrate how affective atmosphere can be analytically productive in examining the elemental and embodied dimensions of subterranean geopolitics. It not only enables critical appreciation of the ways in which different elemental materialities impact upon subjective feelings in/of subterranean spaces. More crucially, it also encourages incisive reflections into the agency and politics behind the conjoining of the elemental and bodily for the (re)making of subterranean geopolitics. (1) Background--Fujian and Taiwan are the main areas of wood forest products trade, and they also have a sequential difference in the development of wood forest products industry, with similar trade structure and facing similar international trade situation. The domestic scholars' researches on the international competitiveness of China's wood forest products industry mainly focus on the comparative study of the international competitive-ness of China's wood forest products and the world's main wood forest products exporting countries, and the comparative study on the international competitiveness of wood forest products industry in Fujian and Taiwan is relatively few. At present, the export market of wood forest products in Fujian and Taiwan has a high coincidence degree, and there is a certain trade competition. Based on the generalized double diamond model, the relevant factors affecting the international competitiveness of wood forest products industry in Fujian and Taiwan are dis-cussed, and the decision reference is provided for Fujian's wood forest products industry to improve its international competitiveness. (2) Methods--Firstly, the characteristics of wood forest products trade between Fujian and Taiwan were compared from the aspects of export trade scale, import and export trade structure and main trade markets. Secondly, international market share, trade competitiveness index and relative trade advantage index were selected to measure the international competitiveness of wood forest products industry in Fujian and Taiwan. Finally, the paper analyzed the factors affecting the international competitiveness of the wood forest products industry in Fujian and Taiwan by using the generalized double diamond model, and put forward some policy suggestions to improve the international competitiveness of the wood forest products industry in Fujian. (3) Results--From 2002 to 2008, the gap of international competitiveness of wood forest products between Fujian and Taiwan was small. From 2008 to 2009, both Fujian and Taiwan were affected by the global financial crisis to varying degrees. With the help of its own economic strength and forestry policy reform, the international competitiveness of wood forest products in Fujian surpassed that of Taiwan after 2009, and steadily improved. Compared with the wood forest products industry in Taiwan, the development of wood forest products industry in Fujian had the following four influencing factors; First, the input structure of primary production factors was reasonable, but the input structure of advanced factors such as capital and talents needed to be optimized. Second, there was a vast space for local demand, but the structure of the international demand market needed to be adjusted. Third, the related industries developed rapidly, but the basic supporting industries needed to be upgraded. Fourth, the strategy, structure and competitive environment of domestic and foreign entities needed to be improved. (4) Conclusions and Discussions--Based on the above research conclusions, the following policy recommendations are put forward: First, optimize the input structure of production factors to improve the efficiency of wood forest products industry. Second, adjust the export trade structure to stabilize the wood forest products market. Third, develop relevant and supporting industries to enable the wood forest products industry Chain. Five mites of the genus Sennertia Oudemans, 1905: Sennertia alfkeni (Oudemans, 1900), Sennertia eximiussp. nov., Sennertia horrida (Vitzthum, 1912), Sennertia lauta Klimov and OConnor, 2007, Sennertia taiwanensissp. nov., which are phoretic on carpenter bees (Genus Xylocopa) from Taiwan and Kinmen area, are described and illustrated. The species delimitation among the five Sennertia species using phylogenetic tree and genetic K2P distance analyses is well-defined. The species groups to which these bee mites belong, and their hosts in this area, are as follows: S. alfkeni (japonica-group): Xylocopa (Alloxylocopa) nr. appediculata, X. (Alloxylocopa) phalothorax and X. (Koptortosoma) ruficeps; S. eximiussp. nov. (cerambycina-group): X. (Biluna) auripennis, X. (Zonohirsuta) dejeanii and X. (Biluna) tranquebarorum; S. horrida (horrida-group): X. (Biluna) auripennis and X. (Biluna) tranquebarorum; S. lauta (horrida-group): X. (Zonohirsuta) dejeanii and X. This study selected examples of 17 typhoons that landed in Fujian after passing through Taiwan. The study evaluated the precipitation in different time scales and the spatial distribution of daily precipitation of varying magnitudes in the southeastern coastal area by comparing satellite precipitation estimation products with meteorological observation station data. The evaluation used a correlation coefficient, mean relative error, relative bias, and graded assessment indexes (probability of detection, false alarm rate, and critical success index). Correlation coefficient analysis revealed that maximum daily precipitation performed best, followed by process total precipitation. The relative bias indicates that the precipitation estimated by the satellite is lower than the rainfall recorded by the automatic weather station. Mean relative error analysis showed that hourly precipitation had the highest error, followed by maximum daily precipitation. The GPM IMERG precipitation products' retrieval of daily precipitation of varying magnitudes was assessed using three indicators. The assessment revealed that the satellite had a low under-reporting rate for light rain events but a high under-reporting rate for torrential rain events, especially extremely heavy rainstorm events, in terms of probability of detection. For the false alarm rate, the satellite had a small probability of false predictions for light rain events, while extremely heavy rainstorm events had the highest probability. For the critical success index, the satellite's estimation of light rain events was basically consistent with reality; however, its ability to estimate precipitations above rainstorm levels was low. The results of the spatial assessment of heavy precipitation show that the satellite's ability to detect heavy precipitation's structure, intensity, and location is fair and has some reference value, especially for regions where conventional information is scarce. Urbanization is a crucial indicator which reflects the socio-economic development of a country or region. The regions across the Taiwan Strait (TSR) have garnered attention worldwide as being representative of typical urbanization development along the southeastern coast. Currently, research in the TSR predominantly focuses on individual regions, with limited academic achievements comparing urbanization paths across the strait. In particular, the domain of comparative analysis of the spatiotemporal characteristics of urbanization dynamics in TSR by using long time series of nighttime light data remains largely underexplored. Therefore, this study focused on comparing the urbanization paths in the TSR and analyzing the spatiotemporal characteristics of urbanization by using the long-term nighttime light data from 1992 to 2020. Additionally, some methods such as Theil–Sen median trend analysis, Mann–Kendall significance test, Hurst exponent, spatial statistics, and time series were used to quantitatively analyze the spatial distribution patterns and temporal trends of nighttime lights in the TSR since 1992. The results were as follows: (1) From 1992 to 2020, the spatial distribution of nighttime light data in TSR exhibited significant spatial heterogeneity, with high-value areas mainly located in southeastern Fujian and northwestern Taiwan, while low-value areas were concentrated in Fujian's inland regions; (2) During this period, nighttime lighting data increased from 729,863 in 1992 to 2,729,052 in 2020, and the percentage of its high-value (40–063) increased from 2.59% in 1992 to 12.22% in 2020; (3) Comparison of nighttime light data across representative cities from Taiwan (Taipei, Hsinchu) and Fujian (Xiamen, Fuzhou) uncovered distinct growth patterns—while Taiwanese cities had a high initial brightness value (the lowest value in the last 30 years was 518,379.4), their growth was relatively slow (average growth rate of 17%); Fujian cities, on the other hand, started from lower initial brightness value (the lowest value in the last 30 years was 35,123.1), but displayed substantial growth vigor (average growth rate of 222%); (4) During the study period, the nighttime light data of the vast majority of cities in the TSR demonstrated a significant increasing trend, particularly in coastal areas and urban centers; (5) Predictions of future trend variation suggest that the significantly increasing trend of cities surrounding Taiwan's primary metropolitan areas will intensify, whereas metropolitan regions such as Keelung may witness a decline in future trend variations. However, only a mere 0.03% of the nighttime light data show a significant decreasing trend. Additionally, there are distinct differences in the urbanization development stages of the TSR. Fujian is currently undergoing rapid urbanization, while Taiwan's urbanization has entered a stable stage. The study reveals that factors such as geographical location, natural resources, transportation infrastructure, population size, and industrial structure collectively influence the urbanization characteristics of the TSR. This research bears substantial significance for deepening the comprehension of the patterns and processes of urbanization development in the TSR and provides valuable insights for urban construction and development across the strait. This study aims to compare the clay mineralogy and whole-soil major chemistry of elements in late Miocene soil sediments and early Quaternary red paleosols in the Penghu Islands, (Pescadores), Taiwan, and Zhangpu Volcanic Park, Fujian. There were the late Miocene Chu Wan (CWI and CWII), Shiao Men Yu (SMY) and two intergrade red soils, Chu Wan (CW(irs)) and Shiao Men Yu (SMY(irs)), with three distinctive zones of different dominating kaolins in the profiles of the Penghu Islands. A Tong Wei (TW) paleosol of early Quaternary basaltic eruptions in the Penghu Islands was collected. The Anzei (AZ), Si Yu (HY) and Chianmei (CM) paleosols were sampled from the Penghu Islands and Yulinshi (YLS) paleosols near the Zhangpu Volcanic Park for this study. The CW and SMY paleosols erupted in the late Miocene, and the other paleosols erupted on the Penghu Islands. These paleosols were fractionated into clay fractions and subjected to soil physical and chemical analyses. Kaolin minerals were dominant in the CW(irs) and SMY(irs) paleosols. The top layer (layer one) in the CW(irs) was 7 Å-halloysite, and order/disordered kaolinites were present in layers two and three. The CW(irs) and SMY(irs) hexagonal-like, platy kaolinites (0.1–0.2 µm in diameter), spheroidal and hollow 7 Å-halloysite (layer 1) was determined with transmission electron microscopic (TEM) investigations. The early Quaternary red soil of TW consisted of kaolinite, illite, vermiculite and smectite clay assemblages. Late Miocene paleosols were classified as fine, kaolinite, hyperthermic and Typic Rhodic Paleudults, and the early Quaternary red paleosols were classified as fine, mixed, hyperthermic and Typic Rodistalf, respectively. Late Miocene paleosols contained more clays, lower SiO2/Al2O3 and higher chemical index of weathering (CIW) than early Quaternary paleosols. The kaolin, illite, smectite and vermiculite mineralogy, physical and chemical properties of paleosols and landscapes in the Zhangpu YLS, Fujian, were similar to those of late Miocene sediments and early Quaternary red paleosols in the Penghu Islands. Energy demand is rising sharply due to the technological development and progress of modern times. Neverthless, traditional thermal power generation has several diadvantages including its low energy usage and emitting a lot of polluting gases, resulting in the energy depletion crisis and the increasingly serious greenhouse effect. In response to environmental issues and energy depletion, the Combined Cooling, Heating and Power system (CCHP) combined with the power-generation system of renewable energy, which this work studied, has the advantages of high energy usage and low environmental pollution compared with traditional thermal power generation, and has been gradually promoted in recent years. This system needs to cooperate with the instability of renewable energy and the dispatch of the energy-saving system; the optimization of the system has been researched recently for this purpose. This study took Xikou village, Lieyu township, Kinmen county, Taiwan as the experimental region to solve the optimization problem of CCHP combined with renewable energy and aimed to optimize the multi-objective system including minimizing the operation cost, minimizing the carbon emissions, and maximizing the energy utilization rate. This study converted the original multi-objective optimization problem into a single-objective optimization problem by using the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to and Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) approach. In addition, a hybrid of the simplified swarm optimization (SSO) and differential evolution (DE) algorithm, called SSO-DE, was proposed in this research to solve the studied problem. SSO-DE is based on SSO as the core of the algorithm and is combined with DE as the local search strategy. The contributions and innovations of the manuscript are clarified as follows: 1. a larger scale of CCHP was studied; 2. the parallel connection of the mains, allowing the exchange of power with the main grid, was considered; 3. the TOPSIS was adopted in this study to convert the original multi-objective optimization problem into a single-objective optimization problem; and 4. the hybrid of the DE algorithm with the improved SSO algorithm was adopted to improve the efficiency of the solution. The proposed SSO-DE in this study has an excellent ability to solve the optimization problem of CCHP combined with renewable energy according to the Friedman test of experimental results obtained by the proposed SSO-DE compared with POS-DE, iSSO-DE, and ABC-DE.
