The U.S. South Atlantic region has many long‐standing data needs and limited data collection resources for federally managed marine fish stocks. Much of the harvest is dominated by recreational fisheries, where data are limited, especially during historic time periods. FISHstory, a pilot project developed through the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council's Citizen Science Program, developed a standardized protocol for archiving and analyzing historic photos from the 1940s to 1970s from a for‐hire fleet based in Florida. These photos document the beginnings of the South Atlantic for‐hire fishery and are potentially an untapped source of data that can help recreate information on catch and length composition prior to when dedicated fishery dependent surveys began. Many careful steps were taken in the design of FISHstory to ensure data collected would be fit for purpose and useful to management. Strong hurricane winds damage power grids and cause cascading power failures. Statistical and machine learning models have been proposed to predict the extent of power disruptions due to hurricanes. Existing outage models use inputs including power system information, environmental, and demographic parameters. This paper reviews the existing power outage models, highlighting their strengths and limitations. Existing models were developed and validated with data on a few utility companies and regions, limiting the extent of their applicability across geographies and hurricane events. Instead, we train and validate these existing outage models using power outages for multiple regions and hurricanes, including Hurricanes Harvey (2017), Michael (2018), and Isaias (2020), in 1,833 cities along the U.S. coastline. The dataset includes outage data from 39 utility companies in Texas, 5 in Florida, 5 in New Jersey, and 11 in New York. We discuss the limited ability of state-of-the-art machine learning models to (1) make bounded outage predictions, (2) extrapolate predictions to high winds, and (3) account for physics-informed outage uncertainties at low and high winds. For example, we observe that existing models can predict outages as high as 25 times more than the number of customers and cannot capture well the outage variance for wind speeds over 70 m/s. Interorganizational coalitions or collaboratives in healthcare are essential to address the health challenges of local communities, particularly during crises such as the Covid-19 pandemic. However, few studies use large-scale data to systematically assess the network structure of these collaboratives and understand their potential to be resilient or fragment in the face of structural changes. This paper analyzes data collected in 2009–2017 about 817 organizations (nodes) in 42 healthcare collaboratives (networks) throughout Florida, the third-largest U.S. state by population, including information about interorganizational ties and organizations' resource contributions to their coalitions. Social network methods are used to characterize the resilience of these collaboratives, including identification of key players through various centrality metrics, analyses of fragmentation centrality and core/periphery structure, and Exponential Random Graph Models to examine how resource contributions facilitate interorganizational ties. Results show that the most significant resource contributions are made by key players identified through fragmentation centrality and by members of the network core. Departure or removal of these organizations would both strongly disrupt network structure and sever essential resource contributions, undermining the overall resilience of a collaborative. Furthermore, one-third of collaboratives are highly susceptible to disruption if any fragmentation-central organization is removed. More fragmented networks are also associated with poorer health-system outcomes in domains such as education, health policy, and services. Florida, an important state in presidential elections in the United States, has received considerable media coverage in recent years for long lines to vote. Do some segments of the population receive a disproportionate share of the resources to serve the voting process, which could encourage some or dissuade others from voting? We conduct the first empirical panel data study to examine whether minority and Democrat voters in Florida experience lower poll worker staffing, which could lengthen the time to vote. We do not find evidence of a disparity directly due to race. Instead, we observe a political party effect—all else equal, a 1% increase in the percentage of voters registered as Democrat in a county increases the number of registered voters per poll worker by 3.5%. This effect appears to be meaningful—using a voting queue simulation, a 5% increase in voters registered as Democrat in a county could increase the average wait time to vote from 40 minutes (the approximate average wait time to vote in Florida in 2012 and the highest average wait time across all states in that election per the Cooperative Congressional Election Study) to about 115 minutes. • Overstory, midstory, understory/regeneration and groundcover data were collected in over 37,000 nested plots from 73 Florida state parks and 15 ecoregions. • Most communities that were supposed to have pine in the overstory did. • Midstory was primarily dominated by non-pines; mainly deciduous hardwoods. • Pine seedlings and saplings were scarce. • Overstory hierarchical clustering grouped some of the similar community types within ecoregions in the same group/subgroup but midstory and regeneration clustering produced mixed results. Plot based forest/vegetation data is used to establish current conditions and inform natural resources management decisions. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection – Division of Recreation and Parks (DRP) manages 175 state parks. As part of its mission, DRP strives to restore landscapes and natural communities by reintroducing dynamic natural processes such as fire. DRP also uses other methods of active management to achieve desired future conditions (DFCs) in multiple communities including those characterized by longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) and native groundcover (GC) species. To meet the challenge of managing natural resources across the State, DRP initiated an objective and repeatable forest/vegetation inventory system. The primary objective of this paper was to analyze and summarize the resultant data and compare current community type (ComType) vegetation conditions. Current conditions were quantified using nested plots distributed within sample areas across 73 state parks and 15 ecoregions via the line-plot method. Over 37,000 plots were inventoried; 36% were in pine flatwoods. Ten actively managed and dominant ComTypes were central to this paper and when aggregated by ecoregion, 76 ComType by ecoregion (CTER) groups were examined. Descriptive statistics for various measurements, e.g., diameter at breast height, height, and density, were calculated for overstory, midstory and understory (vegetation layer) separately per CTER. Mean importance value index (IVI) was calculated by species or species-group per vegetation layer and CTER. Community classification was conducted via hierarchical clustering of CTERs per vegetation layer using mean IVI scores. Across CTERs, pine overstory and midstory abundance/stocking levels were generally low, non-pine overstory and midstory stocking levels were high, pine regeneration was sparse, and GC was dominated by leaf litter, pine straw, and non-pine woody seedlings. Results strongly suggest that some ComTypes were similar within certain ecoregions. Various pine species are considered dominant or one of the prominent overstory species for eight of the ten ComTypes. The ability to manage upland pine ComTypes using natural regeneration systems will become increasingly challenging in the near- to medium-term given relatively low overstory pine stocking for most CTERs, and the virtual lack of young pines within midstory and understory layers. Further investigations could help identify potential causal agents concerning low young pine stocking levels, e.g., timing and frequency of prescribed fires, frequency of logging, and/or increased competition from high densities of midstory non-pines and appropriate natural regeneration systems, e.g., seed tree, shelterwood, or group selection, or underplanting longleaf pine, that would accelerate understory pine recruitment. • Conduct an empirical driving simulator study to assess the effectiveness of speed reduction measures for pedestrian crossing treatments. • Proposed a comparative assessment component to analyze drivers' speed adjustment under different pedestrian crossing treatments types. • Proposed a random parameter hurdle beta model to analyze the proportion of speed reduction with pedestrian crossing treatments types compared to a base condition. • Identified significant environment and driver-related characteristics for speed adjustment behaviors considering the heterogeneity of each driver. Pedestrian crossing treatments, such as Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons (PHBs) and Rectangular Rapid-Flashing Beacons (RRFBs), are traffic control devices implemented to help pedestrians safely cross busy or higher-speed roadways at midblock crossings and uncontrolled intersections. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the PHB and RRFB by analyzing drivers' speeding behavior under different roadway types with real-life traffic conditions. In order to understand the effect of pedestrian crossing treatments (i.e., PHB and RRFB) have on drivers' speeding behavior, this paper analyzes four zones (i.e., one upstream zone and three consecutive downstream zones). For the four analysis zones, different indexes were computed which corresponds to the differences in drivers' speed when encountered with the pedestrian crossing treatments. A grouped random effect hurdle beta regression model is estimated for the indexes, with a fixed effect hurdle beta model used for comparison and validating the importance of considering the grouped random heterogeneity across participants. The proposed analysis framework was validated by the means of an empirical driving simulator study, based on two urban roads in the Central Florida region, North Alafaya Trail (SR-434) and South Orange Blossom Trail (US-441). The results revealed that the proposed modeling framework reflects drivers' difference in speed for the different pedestrian crossing treatments. The results suggest that with proper understanding of the PHB, the PHB can reduce drivers speed even beyond the location of the PHB. Meanwhile, the RRFB does have some effect in speed reduction beyond the location of the RRFB, however many drivers failed to acknowledge the RRFB. It is suggested that when drivers' have proper education on the use of the PHB to reduce speed safely and for the installation of RRFB be on roads with two or less lanes and a speed limit less than 40 mph. While the main purpose of the pedestrian crossing treatments is to help pedestrians cross safely, speed reduction can be considered a byproduct as revealed in this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper employs archival data and historical analysis to trace Florida's penal history, and to connect that history to the economic and social context of the time. Section I reviews the history of Florida's penal system, and the use of convict labor and avoidance of imprisonment from 1840 to 1923. Section II examines theoretical assumptions that guide the analysis of Florida's prison history undertaken in Section III. Drawing upon the insights of Rusche and Kirchheimer, Section III examines Florida's penal history in relation to economic and social trends and issues. Supplemental Digital Content is Available in the Text. Background: The leading cause of injuries among older adults in the United States is unintentional falls. The American Geriatrics Society/British Geriatrics Society promote fall risk management in primary care; however, this is challenging in low-resource settings. Local Problem: Archer Family Health Care (AFHC), an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)–managed and federally designated rural health clinic, identified a care gap with falls adherence to guidelines for patients at higher risk for falls. Methods: The aim of this quality improvement effort was to integrate an evidence-based fall risk management tool in a rural nurse-managed primary care practice. A standardized fall risk management process with a new brief paper-based clinical decision support (CDS) tool was developed and tested in two phases. Intervention: Phase 1 focused on developing a fall risk management CDS tool, identifying the primary care visit workflow, communicating the workflow patterns to the AFHC staff, and collaborating with the staff to identify when and who should implement the tool. Phase 2 focused on implementation of the fall risk management CDS tool into standard practice among older adults aged 65 years and older. Results: We found that integrating the tool did not disrupt the workflow of primary care visits at AFHC. The most common recommended intervention for patients at risk of falling was daily vitamin D supplementation. Conclusion: This project revealed that it is feasible to introduce a brief fall risk management decision support tool in an APRN-managed rural primary care practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The croton scale Phalacrococcus howertoni Hodges & Hodgson gen. nov., sp. nov. (Hemiptera: Coccidae), was first found in Florida, USA. This scale has become a pest because of its high reproductive rate and production of sooty mold. Here, we evaluated predation potential of the predatory beetle, Thalassa montezumae Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), as a biological control agent. To our knowledge, this is the first study of predation by T. montezumae on P. howertoni. Results of our studies showed that the predation by 4th instar T. montezumae was higher on 2nd stage nymphs than on 3rd stage nymphs P. howertoni; predation on adults was lowest. Mean consumption by adult T. montezumae was highest on 2nd stage nymphs followed by 3rd stage nymphs, and adult P. howertoni. There were no significant differences between male and female adult T. montezumae in the prey first visited when offered a choice of 2nd or 3rd instar nymphs, or adults of P. howertoni. Thus, the levels of acceptance did not vary significantly between stages of prey visited by the males and females. Females chose prey faster than males and used less energy to search for food. Egg fecundity did not vary among female beetles fed with different stages of croton scales. Should P. howertoni become a major pest, T. montezumae could be used as a biological control agent within a biologically based integrated pest management program. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For ground- and burrow-nesting birds, heavy rain events can lead to reproductive failure when nests flood. This paper describes the exposure of Florida Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia floridana) to breeding season flooding, its relationship to annual reproductive success rates, and effect on nest failure across 5 cattle ranches in southwestern Florida, USA. In May 2016, a heavy rain event following an unusually wet dry season led to extensive burrow flooding and widespread reproductive failure in 1 of the breeding sites under study. In 2017 and 2018, burrows flooded frequently but the occurrence of flooding later in the breeding season was not associated with a lower overall annual reproductive success rate. Brood age at the time of flooding had a significant relationship with the probability that a particular nest failed, with the chance of event survival increasing from 12% in week 3 to 58% in week 4. All but 1 brood that experienced flooding in week 5 or later survived at least partially. Our findings indicate that flooding is a common occurrence that Florida Burrowing Owls breeding on cattle ranches can tolerate, but extreme precipitation, especially early in the breeding season or when broods are young, can cause widespread nest failure. Annual productivity could be affected if these events increase in frequency with climate change, but the inclusion or maintenance of elevated ground within the ranch landscape could provide refugia. En mayo de 2016, un evento de fuertes lluvias después de una estación de secas inusualmente húmeda tuvo como consecuencia extensas inundaciones de cuevas en el suelo y amplios fallos reproductivos en 1 de los sitios reproductivos de este estudio. En 2017 y 2018, las cuevas en el suelo se inundaron frecuentemente, aunque la incidencia de inundaciones en la estación reproductiva avanzada no estuvo asociada en lo general con una menor tasa reproductiva anual. La edad de la nidada al momento de la inundación tuvo una relación significativa con la probabilidad de que un nido en particular fallara, con incrementos en la probabilidad de sobrevivencia a estos eventos de 12% en la semana 3 a 58% en la semana 4. Con excepción de una nidada, todas las que experimentaron inundaciones en la semana 5 o posterior sobrevivieron al menos parcialmente. Purpose: There are extensive concerns about the size of speech-language caseloads in schools. However, little empirical data exist regarding the patterns of speech-language services enrollment. We reviewed data from several hundred schools in a large state to explore the role of school-level factors in speech-language case enrollment. Method: Child count and enrollment data reports from a stratified sample of schools located within 12 Florida school districts (N = 808) were drawn from the Florida Department of Education portal for the 2018-2019 school year. Three school districts were selected from each of several population sizes. To control for school population size, the raw numbers for each variable were converted into proportions. To examine the relations among variables, multiple correlational and regression analyses were conducted. Results: The results indicated that two school-level factors significantly predicted the total speech-language services enrollment and language therapy enrollment (e.g., proportion of students of low socioeconomic status [SES], passing the state reading assessment), whereas three school factors significantly predicted the speech therapy enrollment (e.g., proportion of low-SES students, passing the reading assessment, and enrolled in English as a second or other language services). Conclusions: The outcomes of this study suggested that school factors can predict speech-language service enrollment, which offers important implications for decision makers in schools. The Pell Grant is the foundational need-based student aid program in the United States, providing students of lower socio-economic status a pathway to afford college costs and educational expenses. Currently, over one-third of all U.S. undergraduate students receive Pell. This paper examines federal Pell assistance and institutional costs for students at the 38 publicly controlled regional Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), which serve high average percentages of low-income students and students of color. By deploying the University of Alabama Education Policy Center's new Mission-Driven Classification System to enrollment, tuition and fees, and other costs metrics along with federal Pell and student loan data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), a more direct apples-to-apples comparison of the 38 public regional HBCUs to the 182 public regional non-HBCU in the same 19 southern states, is revealed, as are comparisons to the universe of 461 public regional universities nationally. This paper finds that America's most financially disadvantaged students rely on Pell Grants to alleviate financial constraints at public regional HBCUs, where 55 percent of students are Pell recipients, a rate 24 percent higher than their non-HBCU counterparts. Moreover, the data underscore an opportunity for Congress to construct a meaningful federal role in higher education by providing stable and sustainable funding for the Pell Grant program.

Research Reproducibility: Educating for Reproducibility, Pathways to Research Integrity was an interdisciplinary, conference hosted virtually by the University of Florida in December 2020. This event brought together educators, researchers, students, policy makers, and industry representatives from across the globe to explore best practices, innovations, and new ideas for education around reproducibility and replicability. Emphasizing a broad view of rigor and reproducibility, the conference touched on many aspects of introducing learners to transparency, rigorous study design, data science, data management, replications, and more. Transdisciplinary themes emerged from the panels, keynote, and submitted papers and poster presentations. The identified themes included lifelong learning, cultivating bottom-up change, "sneaking in" learning, just-in-time learning, targeting learners by career stage, learning by doing, learning how to learn, establishing communities of practice, librarians as interdisciplinary leaders, teamwork skills, rewards and incentives, and implementing top-down change. For each of these themes, we share ideas, practices, and actions as discussed by the conference speakers and attendees.

This protocol paper describes the overall design for HPV MISTICS, a multilevel intervention to increase human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination initiation and completion rates among adolescents aged 11–17. We will conduct a hybrid type 1 implementation-effectiveness trial using a stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial in eight federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) in Florida. Intervention components target three levels: system, providers, and parents. Outcomes will be assessed using quantitative (e.g., vaccination data, survey data) and qualitative methods (e.g., staff and parent interviews). We expect to quantify changes in HPV vaccine series initiation and completion rates for adolescents ages 11–17 in the eight FQHCs. We have hypothesized a 20-percentage point increase in HPV vaccine series initiation and a 10-percentage point increase in series completion. We also anticipate being able to explore factors at the system, provider, and patient levels as potential covariates. Implementation outcomes, barriers, and facilitators identified in the study will help characterize the implementation process and inform potential future intervention scale-up. The project is ongoing; effectiveness and implementation outcomes will be determined following project completion. Findings will provide evidence of an equity-informed research design and implementation procedures that could help improve HPV vaccination rates in similar health systems. Future changes in land use/land cover (LULC) and climate (CC) affect watershed hydrology. Despite past research on estimating such changes, studies on the impacts of both these nonstationary stressors on urban watersheds have been limited. Urban watersheds have several important details such as hydraulic infrastructure that call for fine-scale models to predict the impacts of LULC and CC on watershed hydrology. In this paper, a fine-scale hydrologic model—Personal Computer Storm Water Management Model (PCSWMM)—was applied to predict the individual and joint impacts of LULC changes and CC on surface runoff attributes (peak and volume) in 3800 urban subwatersheds in Midwest Florida. The subwatersheds a range of characteristics in terms of drainage area, surface imperviousness, ground slope and LULC distribution. The PCSWMM also represented several hydraulic structures (e.g., ponds and pipes) across the subwatersheds. We analyzed changes in the runoff attributes to determine which stressor is most responsible for the changes and what subwatersheds are mostly sensitive to such changes. Six 24-h design rainfall events (5- to 200-year recurrence intervals) were studied under historical (2010) and future (year 2070) climate and LULC. We evaluated the response of the subwatersheds in terms of runoff peak and volume to the design rainfall events using the PCSWMM. The results indicated that, overall, CC has a greater impact on the runoff attributes than LULC change. We also found that LULC and climate induced changes in runoff are generally more pronounced in greater recurrence intervals and subwatersheds with smaller drainage areas and milder slopes. However, no relationship was found between the changes in runoff and original subwatershed imperviousness; this can be due to the small increase in urban land cover projected for the study area. Managed treatment wetlands technology is now used around the world to treat wastewater and stormwater by removing nutrients and other contaminants to obtain a desired water quality. In this paper we present a brief review of a large-scale application of the nature-based technology known as stormwater treatment areas (STAs). These STAs were constructed to treat agricultural and urban runoff to reduce outflow total phosphorus (TP) concentrations to <20 μg P L−1, which is required to protect downstream water quality and preserve the remaining Everglades ecosystem. Five STAs with a total area of approximately 25,000 ha were built at strategic locations to reduce TP loads to the Everglades Protection Area. For the past three decades, these Everglades STAs have done remarkable job by 70 to 85% TP load reduction, with an average outflow TP concentrations of 15-40 μg P L−1. The presence of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in stormwater treatment processes is a continuous challenge because of the intertwined nature of its decomposition, bioavailability, and biodegradability and its unclear molecular characteristics. In this paper, 21 T Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) in combination with quantitative polymerase chain reaction was applied to elucidate the molecular change of DON and microbial population dynamics in a field-scale water filtration system filled with two specialty adsorbents for comparison in South Florida where the dry and wet seasons are distinctive annually. The adsorbents included CPS (clay-perlite and sand sorption media) and ZIPGEM (zero-valent iron and perlite-based green environmental media). Our study revealed that seasonal effects can significantly influence the dynamic characteristics and biodegradability of DON. The microbial population density in the filter beds indicated that three microbial species in the nitrogen cycle were particularly thrived for denitrification, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium, and anaerobic ammonium oxidation via competition and commensalism relationships during the wet season. Also, there was a decrease in the compositional complexity and molecular weight of the DON groups (C n H m O p N 1 , C n H m O p N 2 , C n H m O p N 3 , and C n H m O p N 4), revealed by the 21 T FT-ICR MS bioassay, driven by a microbial population quantified by polymerase chain reaction from the dry to the wet season. These findings indirectly corroborate the assumption that the metabolism of microorganisms is much more vigorous in the wet season. The results affirm that the sustainable materials (CPS and ZIPGEM) can sustain nitrogen removal intermittently by providing a suitable living environment in which the metabolism of microbial species can be cultivated and enhanced to facilitate physico-chemical nitrogen removal across the two types of green sorption media. This study explores the historical roots of the relatively new topic of innovation in the creative industries. We are interested in the contributions of researchers that have proven to be important to the topic over the long term. To do so, we used the Reference Publication Year Spectroscopy method. This method is based on the analysis of the frequency with which references are cited in publications in a specific research area, in our case, innovation in the creative industries. The study is based on a corpus of articles rigorously selected through a systematic review method of empirical articles published between 1998 and 2019. The results reveal 4585 cited references (CR) with 9 clearly identifiable peaks, the first of which is caused by the work of Schumpeter (1934) and the last by the book of Miles & Green (2008). Each of the peaks marks a major contribution to the evolution of the understanding of innovation in these industries with one or more publications, the majority of which have an economic basis. In addition, the study reveals that the three most influential publications in this field are the economically oriented books by Florida (2002), Caves (2000), and Miles & Green (2008). Horizontally curved bridges have been mostly built with steel plate I-girders or tub girders. In the past 15 years, curved concrete girders have been successfully used in several states, including Nebraska, Colorado, and Florida. This paper addresses the design of curved concrete girder bridges using ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) by combining state-of-the-art spliced girder technology and UHPC technology. It also proposes a number of unique features that result in further simplification of precast concrete production and construction. Critical design criteria are discussed. The system development of curved UHPC girder bridges and necessary construction steps are elaborated through a numerical example of a three-span bridge, which shows greatly reduced concrete quantities when compared with recently constructed curved concrete girders. The COVID-19 pandemic, characterized by travel restrictions and reduced traffic volumes, heightened the risk of severe single-vehicle crashes on Florida's freeways. This study utilized random parameter multinomial logit models, accounting for heterogeneity in means and variances, to analyze driver injury severities in 2020 and compare variations in the magnitude of factors contributed to these injuries across different freeway systems. The estimated models identified 31 statistically significant variables across Florida's major freeways (I-4, I-10, I-75, and I-95). Among these variables, only two—normal driving and restraint usage—were statistically significant across all four freeway systems. Moreover, the model results indicated that factors contributing to severe driver injuries were most prominent on I-95 compared to the other freeways in 2020. These findings improve our understanding of freeway safety measures during a pandemic and provide valuable insights to enhance traffic management strategies for state highway agencies, prioritizing operational safety in potential future pandemics. Recent research has identified several risk factors for adolescent vaping. However, limited research has directly explored how low self-control and peer vaping activity are related to adolescent vaping. This study addresses these gaps in the literature by examining relationships between low self-control, peer risk factors for vaping, and adolescent nicotine vaping using a sample of Florida adolescents collected in 2019. In addition, this study examines whether peer risk factors moderate the relationship between low self-control and nicotine vaping. The findings suggest that low self-control and peer nicotine vaping are linked with adolescent nicotine vaping. This study examined the heterogeneity of literacy profiles for adolescents with and without a specific learning disability (SLD) in the U.S. state of Florida Student subgroups displaying common patterns of performance in word-level skills and reading comprehension were identified through latent profile analysis. Results indicate most of the total sample demonstrated below-average performance in one or both areas with word-level skill difficulties being more common than difficulties in reading comprehension alone. Changes in reading performance by profile over time (Grades 6–8) were examined through a latent transition analysis revealing consistent patterns in the SLD sample and variable patterns in the typically developing sample. Resulting profiles were utilized to predict performance on an end-of-year broad reading comprehension measure indicating very little change in performance over time. Findings suggest large numbers of adolescents with concurrent word-level and reading comprehension difficulties likely need sustained intervention in word-level skills to support their reading comprehension. Introduction: Identifying effective strategies to enroll African American, Caribbean, and Hispanic/Latino adults ≥65 years of age in health research is a public health priority. This study aimed to explore intergenerational influence (IGI) among these populations living throughout Florida. Methods: African American, Caribbean, and Hispanic/Latino adults ≥65 years of age and a trusted family member/friend between 25–64 years participated in virtual listening sessions (LS). Culturally matched facilitators used a semi-structured guide to lead LS that was recorded, transcribed, and uploaded into NVivo©. The constant comparative method was used for analysis. Results: 363 African American, Caribbean, and Hispanic/Latino participated in LS. Five (5) themes relate to IGI emerged: (1) parent-child relationships; (2) family caregiving/parental illness experiences; (3) historical research maltreatment; (4) transfer of cultural knowledge; and (5) future generations. Discussion: Our findings support that IGI can be leveraged to increase the participation of African American, Caribbean, and Hispanic/Latino older adults in health research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic metabolic disease that seriously jeopardizes human physical and mental health and reduces quality of life. Intestinal flora is one of the critical areas of exploration in T1DM research. Objective: This study aims to explore the research hotspot and development trend of T1DM and intestinal flora to provide research direction and ideas for researchers. Methods: We used the Web of Science (WOS) Core Collection and searched up to 18 November 2023, for articles on studies of the correlation between T1DM and intestinal flora. CiteSpace, VOSviewers and R package "bibliometrix" were used to conduct this bibliometric analysis. Results: Eventually, 534 documents met the requirements to be included, and as of 18 November 2023, there was an upward trend in the number of publications in the field, with a significant increase in the number of articles published after 2020. In summary, F SusanWong (UK) was the author with the most publications (21), the USA was the country with the most publications (198), and the State University System of Florida (the United States) was the institution with the most publications (32). The keywords that appeared more frequently were T cells, fecal transplants, and short-chain fatty acids. The results of keywords with the most robust citation bursts suggest that Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and butyrate may become a focus of future research. Conclusion: In the future, intestinal flora will remain a research focus in T1DM. Future research can start from Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and combine T cells, fecal bacteria transplantation, and short-chain fatty acids to explore the mechanism by which intestinal flora affects blood glucose in patients with T1DM, which may provide new ideas for the prevention and treatment of T1DM. This research investigates the growth performance of Clarias batrachus when supplemented with Pleurotus florida freeze-dried extract (PFME) over 60 days. Triplicate groups of fish were fed experimental diets containing varying concentrations of PFME (0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2%), each adjusted to 5% of their wet body weight biweekly. Results demonstrate that PFME-enriched diets significantly enhanced the growth metrics of Clarias batrachus compared to a control group fed a standard diet. Fish fed with Diet III, containing 1.5% PFME, exhibited the highest weight gain of 31.98 ± 0.45 grams, followed by Diet IV (26.59 ± 0.33 grams), Diet II (25.26 ± 0.49 grams), Diet I (23.90 ± 0.30 grams), and the control group (17.78 ± 0.61 grams). This trend in weight gain correlates with biweekly measurements showing accelerated growth, particularly evident after the first month of feeding. Length measurements also reflected enhanced growth rates, with Diet III yielding the longest fish at 21.24 ± 0.38 cm. Furthermore, specific growth rates were notably higher in fish-fed Diet III (2.11 ± 0.05%), indicating superior growth potential compared to other diets and the control. Feed conversion ratios (FCR) were comparable across experimental diets, suggesting efficient feed utilization, particularly evident in Diet III (FCR 1.55 ± 0.45), which required less feed to produce more fish biomass. Moreover, PFME supplementation positively influenced the feeding rates and survival rates of Clarias batrachus. Fish on Diet III exhibited a consistent feeding rate (3.01 ± 0.06%) similar to other experimental diets, while achieving a high survival rate of 100 ± 0.02%, signifying improved health and immunity. Pleurotus florida extract, particularly at 1.5% concentration (Diet III), proves effective in enhancing the growth performance of Clarias batrachus. This study underscores PFME's potential as a beneficial dietary supplement in the aquaculture, promoting efficient growth and potentially reducing production costs. Background: Depression is characterized by abnormalities in emotional processing, but the specific drivers of such emotional abnormalities are unknown. Computational work indicates that both surprising outcomes (prediction errors; PEs) and outcomes (values) themselves drive emotional responses, but neither has been consistently linked to affective disturbances in depression. As a result, the computational mechanisms driving emotional abnormalities in depression remain unknown. Methods: Here, in 687 individuals, one-third of whom qualify as depressed via a standard self-report measure (the PHQ-9), we use high-stakes, naturalistic events – the reveal of midterm exam grades – to test whether individuals with heightened depression display a specific reduction in emotional response to positive PEs. Results: Using Bayesian mixed effects models, we find that individuals with heightened depression do not affectively benefit from surprising, good outcomes – that is, they display reduced affective responses to positive PEs. These results were highly specific: effects were not observed to negative PEs, value signals (grades), and were not related to generalized anxiety. This suggests that the computational drivers of abnormalities in emotion in depression may be specifically due to positive PE-based emotional responding. Conclusions: Affective abnormalities are core depression symptoms, but the computational mechanisms underlying such differences are unknown. Research Question: A sizable portion of college students experience food and housing insecurity, which poses a roadblock to fully and successfully engaging in higher education. In light of these complex challenges, we ask: How do Florida College System (FCS) institutions meet the basic needs of their students? Methods: To answer the question at hand, we conducted an embedded single case study of the FCS. Between 2014 and 2019, researchers traveled to 21 Florida colleges on one or more occasions to speak with college presidents, administrators, faculty members, advisors, academic support staff, and students. In total, we gathered data from 1,379 people through 213 focus group sessions and 20 individual interviews. Results: From these data emerged evidence of the extensive services and support programs provided by FCS institutions, ranging from food and housing assistance to clothing, transportation, and childcare. Such initiatives aim to meet the chronic, daily needs of students and their families, as well as acute needs that arise out of local disasters and crises. Contributions: The findings of this study contribute to the literature on the mission of community colleges. While these support programs address needs traditionally considered non-academic, participants suggest that they are essential to fostering student success. By meeting students' physiological and safety needs, institutions can better accomplish their academic goals of remediation, transfer, vocational training, and contract education, particularly among students who have been traditionally excluded from higher education. A work-zone introduces unexpected conditions for road users and may cause severe safety issues. This study aims to understand drivers' pre-crash improper actions, which are the major contributing factor to the crash occurrence and outcomes severity in single-vehicle (SV) work-zone crashes. A mixed logit model with heterogeneity in mean and variance was developed using Florida's seven-year work-zone crash data. The estimated models investigated five pre-crash improper actions (no contributing action, careless driving, speeding, swerving lanes, and other pre-crash actions) in SV work-zone crashes. Year-paired likelihood ratio tests identified temporal instability existing in the dataset over the study period and suggested yearly model estimation to capture the temporal instability. The model results identified a wide range of variables that impact drivers' pre-crash improper actions, such as driver and weather conditions, work-zone type, and temporal and lighting characteristics. The findings of this study imply that driving psychology plays a critical role in safety-related driving behaviors in work-zone areas. Engineering or education countermeasures that could increase driver alertness of potential hazards are suggested to reduce improper actions by drivers and improve work-zone safety. Purpose: This article explored Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge of Complementary and Alternative Interventions (CAI). Method: We utilized a cross-sectional online survey among a sample of 193 LCSWs. Results: Approximately 60% of LCSWs assessed for and utilized CAI professionally, and 90% personally utilized CAI. LCSWs had moderately positive beliefs, neutral attitudes, and high baseline knowledge of CAI. Age and years of practice were the only significant correlates, and the only significant predictor for assessment and utilization of CAI was positive attitudes. Discussion: As the largest group of mental health providers, we found that it is vital for LCSWs to have a solid understanding of CAI to provide effective and safe services to the clients they serve. It is hoped that the results of this study will serve as a starting point for future research on CAI among social workers, with the goal of enhancing client-centered practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of turbidity and sedimentation stress on early life stages of corals are poorly understood, particularly in Atlantic species. Dredging operations, beach nourishment, and other coastal construction activities can increase sedimentation and turbidity in nearby coral reef habitats and have the potential to negatively affect coral larval development and metamorphosis, reducing sexual reproduction success. In this study, we investigated the performance of larvae of the threatened Caribbean coral species Orbicella faveolata exposed to suspended sediments collected from a reef site in southeast Florida recently impacted by dredging (Port of Miami), and compared it to the performance of larvae exposed to sediments collected from the offshore, natal reef of the parent colonies. In a laboratory experiment, we tested whether low and high doses of each of these sediment types affected the survival, settlement, and respiration of coral larvae compared to a no-sediment control treatment. In addition, we analyzed the sediments used in the experiments with 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to assess differences in the microbial communities present in the Port versus Reef sediments, and their potential impact on coral performance. Overall, only O. faveolata larvae exposed to the high-dose Port sediment treatment had significantly lower survival rates compared to the control treatment, suggesting an initial tolerance to elevated suspended sediments. However, significantly lower settlement rates were observed in both Port treatments (low- and high-dose) compared to the control treatment one week after exposure, suggesting strong latent effects. Sediments collected near the Port also contained different microbial communities than Reef sediments, and higher relative abundances of the bacteria Desulfobacterales, which has been associated with coral disease. We hypothesize that differences in microbial communities between the two sediments may be a contributing factor in explaining the observed differences in larval performance. Together, these results suggest that the settlement success and survival of O. faveolata larvae are more readily compromised by encountering port inlet sediments compared to reef sediments, with potentially important consequences for the recruitment success of this species in affected areas. Background: In an effort to improve the quality of medical care, the philosophy of patient-centered care has become integrated into almost every aspect of the medical community. Despite its widespread acceptance, among patients and practitioners, there are concerns that rapid advancements in artificial intelligence may threaten elements of patient-centered care, such as personal relationships with care providers and patient-driven choices. This study explores the extent to which patients are confident in and comfortable with the use of these technologies when it comes to their own individual care and identifies areas that may align with or threaten elements of patient-centered care. Methods: An exploratory, mixed-method approach was used to analyze survey data from 600 US-based adults in the State of Florida. The survey was administered through a leading market research provider (August 10–21, 2023), and responses were collected to be representative of the state's population based on age, gender, race/ethnicity, and political affiliation. Results: Respondents were more comfortable with the use of AI in health-related tasks that were not associated with doctor-patient relationships, such as scheduling patient appointments or follow-ups (84.2%). Fear of losing the 'human touch' associated with doctors was a common theme within qualitative coding, suggesting a potential conflict between the implementation of AI and patient-centered care. In addition, decision self-efficacy was associated with higher levels of comfort with AI, but there were also concerns about losing decision-making control, workforce changes, and cost concerns. A small majority of participants mentioned that AI could be useful for doctors and lead to more equitable care but only when used within limits. Conclusion: The application of AI in medical care is rapidly advancing, but oversight, regulation, and guidance addressing critical aspects of patient-centered care are lacking. While there is no evidence that AI will undermine patient-physician relationships at this time, there is concern on the part of patients regarding the application of AI within medical care and specifically as it relates to their interaction with physicians. The timing of American horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) spawning behavior along the coast of Florida (United States) is generally associated with the highest tides during the spring and fall lunar cycles. All Florida estuaries support horseshoe crab populations, but tidal characteristics vary markedly among locations, which may influence the timing of horseshoe crab spawning behavior. The Indian River Lagoon is a large microtidal estuary on Florida's east coast. Given the microtidal nature of the lagoon, it is unclear which environmental factors affect horseshoe spawning. In 2019, volunteers of Florida Horseshoe Crab Watch conducted daily surveys at two sites in the northern Indian River Lagoon during peak spawning months (February–April). During each survey, volunteers counted all spawning horseshoe crabs and recorded environmental variables, including water temperature, air temperature, wind speed, wind direction, salinity, and tide height. We developed a suite of negative-binomial regression models to quantify relationships between the number of spawning horseshoe crabs and environmental factors. Modeling results indicated a positive relationship between onshore wind speed and number of spawning horseshoe crabs. Our study suggests that in the absence of tidal cues, onshore wind speed may be an important driver of horseshoe crab spawning activity in microtidal estuarine systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Importance: The frequency and characteristics of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) may vary by SARS-CoV-2 variant. Objective: To characterize PASC-related conditions among individuals likely infected by the ancestral strain in 2020 and individuals likely infected by the Delta variant in 2021. Design: Retrospective cohort study of electronic medical record data for approximately 27 million patients from March 1, 2020-November 30, 2021. Setting: Healthcare facilities in New York and Florida. Participants: Patients who were at least 20 years old and had diagnosis codes that included at least one SARS-CoV-2 viral test during the study period. Exposure: Laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 infection, classified by the most common variant prevalent in those regions at the time. Main outcome(s) and measure(s): Relative risk (estimated by adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]) and absolute risk difference (estimated by adjusted excess burden) of new conditions, defined as new documentation of symptoms or diagnoses, in persons between 31–180 days after a positive COVID-19 test compared to persons without a COVID-19 test or diagnosis during the 31–180 days after the last negative test. Results: We analyzed data from 560,752 patients. The median age was 57 years; 60.3% were female, 20.0% non-Hispanic Black, and 19.6% Hispanic. During the study period, 57,616 patients had a positive SARS-CoV-2 test; 503,136 did not. For infections during the ancestral strain period, pulmonary fibrosis, edema (excess fluid), and inflammation had the largest aHR, comparing those with a positive test to those without a COVID-19 test or diagnosis (aHR 2.32 [95% CI 2.09 2.57]), and dyspnea (shortness of breath) carried the largest excess burden (47.6 more cases per 1,000 persons). For infections during the Delta period, pulmonary embolism had the largest aHR comparing those with a positive test to a negative test (aHR 2.18 [95% CI 1.57, 3.01]), and abdominal pain carried the largest excess burden (85.3 more cases per 1,000 persons). Conclusions and relevance: We documented a substantial relative risk of pulmonary embolism and a large absolute risk difference of abdomen-related symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 infection during the Delta variant period. Numerous modelling techniques exist to estimate abundance of plant and animal populations. The most accurate methods account for multiple complexities found in ecological data, such as observational biases, spatial autocorrelation, and species correlations. There is, however, a lack of user‐friendly and computationally efficient software to implement the various models, particularly for large data sets.We developed the spAbundance R package for fitting spatially explicit Bayesian single‐species and multi‐species hierarchical distance sampling models, N‐mixture models, and generalized linear mixed models. The models within the package can account for spatial autocorrelation using Nearest Neighbour Gaussian Processes and accommodate species correlations in multi‐species models using a latent factor approach, which enables model fitting for data sets with large numbers of sites and/or species.We provide three vignettes and three case studies that highlight spAbundance functionality. We used spatially explicit multi‐species distance sampling models to estimate density of 16 bird species in Florida, USA, an N‐mixture model to estimate black‐throated blue warbler (Setophaga caerulescens) abundance in New Hampshire, USA, and a spatial linear mixed model to estimate forest above‐ground biomass across the continental USA.spAbundance provides a user‐friendly, formula‐based interface to fit a variety of univariate and multivariate spatially explicit abundance models. Pelagic Sargassum landings (hereby referred to as sargasso) increased dramatically in 2011 throughout the equatorial tropical Atlantic due to the formation of the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt (GASB). Despite increasing reports, understanding of local abundances and vegetative characteristics, especially in South Florida, remains limited. From 2018 to 2021, sargasso was collected at two South Florida beaches, with additional sampling at a third beach to assess nutrient and heavy metal concentrations. Biomass landings varied greatly, with S. fluitans III predominant during the "peak season" (May to July) and S. natans I predominant in the "off season", while S. natans VIII was consistently least abundant. This suggests that South Florida may receive sargasso from the Sargasso Sea during the low season and from the GASB during the peak sargasso season. Across all three morphotypes, mean nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) contents were 0.97% and 0.04% (dry weight), respectively. Out of the 16 heavy metals detected, our values were similar to those reported across the Caribbean. Arsenic was the most prevalent heavy metal, with sargasso containing epibionts having higher arsenic concentrations. The Gulf of Mexico red snapper fishery has been caught in a spiral of more restrictive regulations and disputed management. Current management measures have failed to reduce fishing mortality, owing in part to derby style fishing. A harvest tag system could potentially better limit fishing mortality without decreasing harvest seasons. In 2019/20 we surveyed 766 recreational anglers who fish in Florida with private boats to ascertain their preferences for regulation changes, and how they would alter their fishing effort if a harvest tag was implemented. Respondents were heterogeneous in terms of their preferences for harvest tags versus current management approaches, with most respondents preferring to maintain their current effort under the existing management approach of bag, size, and season limits. Respondents who preferred harvest tags indicated that they might increase or decrease fishing effort. Our findings suggest that more stringent regulations using current management approaches will not secure angler satisfaction or reduce fishing pressure on the red snapper stock. Harvest tags, though not preferred by all respondents, may allow regulators to better manage the number of anglers in the fishery and to rebuild the stock, although implementing this program will pose some challenges.
