As the United States' population grows via migration and immigration, with this rise in diverse identities, there has been increasing concern regarding disparities for undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. with limited access to the health system. Given the various constraints involving communication and social structures that undocumented immigrants face, a culture-centered approach is drawn on to investigating how this group goes about navigating a dominant health system given their restricted access. I explore co-constructed themes that emerged through conversations with undocumented immigrants, (people without papers as I call them in this work) living in the United States to gain an understanding as to the structural and cultural limitations faced by this group. By doing qualitative semi-structured interviews with local participants living in the South Florida region, I describe the various features of a complex U.S. health system that undocumented immigrants (people without papers) deemed as important obstacles that limit their willingness to interact with official medical spaces. This work draws on narratives and accounts to shed light on the intersection of disparities this group has to overcome in order to consider entering a medical space to receive the treatment they might need. The findings of this article highlighted the structural violence that certain subaltern groups, such as people without papers experience due to their limited access to foundational systems in their environment.

Non-native and invasive (NNI) plants have spread throughout the southeastern United States. To monitor the spread of NNI plants and implement appropriate management we need to understand the relationship between NNI plants and their avian dispersers. Birds are the primary disperser of many NNI plants, and thus a thorough understanding of their role can aid agencies wishing to control the spread of NNI plants. We examined the literature to assess the current knowledge of the relationship between NNI plants, specifically shrubs, trees, and vines, and their avian dispersers in the southeastern United States. We found 56 papers covering 28 NNI plant species and 46 bird species. 66% of papers on NNI plants did not connect plants with specific avian dispersers and those that did tended to mention fewer than five avian species. More studies were conducted in Florida than any other state and most papers focused on the spread of NNI plants. Our review indicates a need for further research to identify the avian dispersers of NNI plants and the role they play in the spread of NNI in the southeast. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The state of evidence-based transgender healthcare in the United States has been put at risk by the spread of misinformation harmful to transgender people. Health science librarians can alleviate the spread of misinformation by identifying and analyzing its flow through systems that affect access to healthcare. Discussion: The author developed the theory of the Misinformation - Legislation Pipeline by studying the flow of antitransgender misinformation from online echo chambers through a peer-reviewed article and into policy enacted to ban medical treatments for transgender people in the state of Florida. The analysis is precluded with a literature review of currently accepted best practices in transgender healthcare, after which, the author analyzes the key report leveraged by Florida's Department of Health in its ban. A critical analysis of the report is followed by a secondary analysis of the key peer-reviewed article upon which the Florida Medicaid authors relied to make the decision. The paper culminates with a summation of the trajectory of anti-transgender misinformation. Conclusion: Misinformation plays a key role in producing legislation harmful to transgender people. Health science librarians have a role to play in identifying misinformation as it flows through the Misinformation - Legislation Pipeline and enacting key practices to identify, analyze, and oppose the spread of harmful misinformation. Background: Immigrant Latinx transgender people often migrate to the United States because of a desire for increased safety and more opportunities. However, after migrating to the United States, immigrant Latinx transgender people often struggle to access basic needs, including health care, jobs, and stable finances. These struggles are exacerbated for undocumented immigrant Latinx transgender people. There is a gap in the literature regarding needed resources for immigrant Latinx transgender community members living in the United States. Aims: Utilizing a critical intersectionality framework, the aim of the present study was to investigate the resource needs of immigrant Latinx transgender community members living in the United States. Methods: A community sample of 18 immigrant Latinx transgender people living in a large metropolitan city in Florida participated in individual semi-structured interviews to explore their community resource needs. Results: Thematic analysis revealed five themes related to resources that participants needed including: 1) Transgender healthcare/resources, 2) Public education, 3) Financial aid resources, 4) Homelessness resources, and 5) Addictions care. Two resource need-related themes were identified that pertain specifically to undocumented immigrant Latinx transgender people, including: 1) Documentation papers for access, and 2) Legal aid. Conclusions: Findings suggest that immigrant Latinx transgender community members in this study provided guidance about broad resources needed to enhance their wellness and safety, and promote liberation of community members. Participants' resource needs suggest the importance of policy and structural level changes from institutions with power that consider and enhance the wellness of immigrant Latinx transgender people. Background: Police violence is increasingly recognized as an urgent public health problem. Basic questions about police violence, however, remain unanswered, including which types of law enforcement agency are responsible for fatal police violence deaths. Methods: We estimated the proportion of police violence deaths in the U.S. (2013–2022) that were attributable to local, county, state, federal, or tribal police agencies, using mapping police violence data. We examined proportions overall, by decedent race/ethnicity, and by state. Results: Nationally, 60% of decedents were killed by municipal, 29% by county, 8% by state, and 3% by federal, police, with < 1% killed by tribal or other officers. These proportions varied by race/ethnicity, with 56% of Native American decedents killed by municipal police compared to 70–75% among other racially minoritized people. While municipal police were responsible for most deaths in most states, in the Southeast, county police predominated. In some Northeastern states (and Alaska), state police were responsible for > 40% of deaths. Conclusions: We identify wide geographic & racial/ethnic variation in the agencies responsible for fatal police violence. Malacologists took notice of tree snails in the genus Liguus during the last decades of the nineteenth century. Since then, Liguus have undergone repeated shifts in identity as members of species, states, shell collections, backyard gardens, and engineered wildernesses. To understand what Liguus are, this paper examines snail enthusiasts, collectors, researchers, and conservationists-collectively self-identified as Liggers-in their varied landscapes. I argue that Liguus, both in the scientific imaginary and in the material landscape, mediated knowledge-making processes that circulated among amateur and professional malacologists across the United States and Cuba during the twentieth century. Beginning with an examination of early Liggers' work in Florida and Cuba, this paper demonstrates how notions of taxonomy and biogeography informed later efforts to understand Liguus hybridization and conservation. A heterogeneous community of Liggers has had varied and at times contradictory commitments informed by shifting physical, social, and scientific landscapes. Genealogizing those commitments illuminates the factors underpinning a decision to undertake the until now little-chronicled large-scale and sustained transplantation of every living Floridian form of Liguus fasciatus into Everglades National Park. The social history of Liggers and Liguus fundamentally blurs distinctions between professional scientists and amateur naturalists. The experiences of a diverse cast of Liggers and their Liguus snails historicize the complex character of human-animal relations and speak to the increasing endangerment of many similarly range-restricted invertebrates., (© 2022. Forests of the southeastern United States are home to large timber industries with substantial contributions to global round wood production and paper products. Despite the success of plantations and the large timber industries in this area, pine growth remains constrained due to the competition between planted pine and the species in the understory. Moreover, effective control of this interspecies competition had shown a significant two- to four-times increase in stand productivity. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the use of laser scanning derived data from Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) to assess understory vegetation biomass, as conventional methods utilizing optical imagery have yet to be effective in quantifying and mapping evergreen understory in the southeastern coastal forests of the United States. For this study, we utilized TLS to scan the entire forest profile within 60 sample plots of an operational loblolly pine plantation in Nassau County, Florida, and collected understory biomass data through destructive sampling. We compared three TLS-based volume estimation methods for predicting understory biomass and applied the Adaptive Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (ALASSO) regression method to derive an optimal model by integrating the most efficient volume estimation methods and other TLS-derived standard metrics. Our study identifies the 20th percentile of the echo height and a 3D volume metric based on mean height and understory cover as the most significant explanatory variables for the optimal model. The model exhibits high accuracy, with Adjusted R-squared (Adj. R2) of 0.80 and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 234.8 g per square meter (g/m2). Additionally, the mean height and understory-based volume estimation method outperformed other methods, such as voxel count and three dimensional (3D) alpha hall-based method, with Adj. R2 of 0.79, 0.47, and 0.57, and RMSE values of 288, 448.6, and 413 g/m2, respectively, when used as a single variable in the model. The resulting model successfully predicted and quantified understory vegetation, showcasing TLS's potential to accurately capture biomass variation, particularly in evergreen-dominated pine plantation forests in the southeastern United States coastal regions. Background: A growing body of research has found a link between firearm availability and police shootings of citizens across place. The problem, however, is that the previous studies on the topic tend to suffer from several limitations: a near exclusive focus on citizen fatalities, units of analysis at the state or county levels, and a variety of proxy measures tapping into community-level firearm access. The current study set out to address these issues by examining the relationship between different forms of firearm availability and both fatal and nonfatal injurious police shootings of citizens at the city level. Methods: More specifically, it merged The Trace's "Missing Pieces" measures of guns reported lost and stolen to police as well as licensed firearms dealers across jurisdictions from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives as proxies for firearm availability with data on police shootings of citizens in California and Florida from California's URSUS system and the Tampa Bay Times' "Why Cops Shoot" database, respectively. Negative binomial regression analyses were performed on a sample of 253 cities across the two states and a sub-sample of cities with licensed firearms dealers. Results: Findings uncovered a small positive association between rates of federally licensed guns stores and the number citizens shot by police as well as police shooting incidents while controlling for several community-level measures (e.g., concentrated disadvantage, gun homicide rates). Rates of guns lost or reported stolen were generally not significantly associated with the outcome measures in the multivariate models. Conclusions: Firearm availability is a significant correlate of police shootings. Pooled counts of both citizens shot by police and police shooting incidents are heightened in jurisdictions with higher rates of licensed gun dealers, which may be due to the fact that all firearms sold in the USA first make their way to the public through these mechanisms. Such licensed gun dealers must be appropriately monitored and audited to reduce illicit behavior and prevent firearms from making their way into secondary markets. Pomegranate, a pivotal fruit that is well recognized globally and a rapidly emerging crop in the southeastern United States and other subtropical regions, faces a formidable challenge from Colletotrichum spp., a fungal pathogen causing anthracnose fruit rot, which leads to severe to complete premature fruit drop. The development and use of disease-resistant cultivars are considered the most cost-effective and sustainable approach to managing this disease. Identifying sources of resistance is essential for developing new cultivars with improved resistance to this disease. This project aimed to expand the scope of evaluation through a 2-year field study in central Florida, examining fruit from 35 cultivars from diverse origins using both artificial inoculation at the petal dehiscent stage and natural infection. Lesion size on the fruit was measured during the growing season in a field setting. Subsequently, seven cultivars were selected for further testing by inoculating detached mature fruit and measuring lesion size to confirm observed resistance and determine the correlation between resistance observed in planta in the field and on detached fruit in the laboratory. The field study revealed significant genetic differences among pomegranate cultivars in susceptibility to naturally occurring and induced anthracnose fruit rot and classified cultivars into five resistance or susceptibility classes. Five cultivars that originated from different regions of the world, including 'Azadi', showed consistent resistance to anthracnose fruit rot in the field. Resistance remained strong on detached mature fruit. A strong positive correlation existed between resistance levels on in-planta fruit and on detached mature fruit, suggesting a possible simple, efficient approach to screening breeding populations for anthracnose fruit rot resistance in pomegranate. These findings represent an important step toward developing new anthracnose-resistant cultivars and understanding and improving disease resistance in this increasingly important fruit crop in the world. Relocation as a result of a job opportunity or as part of a current job has increased in recent years in the United States. The frequency with which employees are relocating makes exploring employees' perception of the costs and benefits of technology for maintaining family relationships useful. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how employees who have relocated for employment opportunities perceive the costs and benefits of video technology as an option for maintaining family relationships, for employees working in a company located in the United States. The sample consisted of 25 employees at a healthcare facility in the state of Florida who had relocated for employment opportunities and had used video technology to maintain relationships with family members in another location. Data collected from semi-structured interviews, open-ended questionnaires, and a focus group were analyzed through thematic analysis. Findings provided evidence that relocated employees perceived video technology to be an important tool to help maintain work–life balance when they were away from their family. The employees' perception of the benefits of video technology in maintaining family relationships included closeness despite distance and tangibility of the person. These findings have implications for employees who have relocated, employees considering relocation, and families of employees, as well as organization leaders and human resource departments. Evaporative fraction (EF) is the ratio of latent heat (LE in W m−2) to available energy at the land surface. It can aid in partitioning the Sun's energy available at the Earth's surface into surface energy fluxes to understand land–atmosphere interactions as well as monitoring Evapotranspiration and terrestrial drought conditions. In this study, the feasibility of estimating instantaneous, diurnal, and daily EF with minimal satellite and meteorological inputs based on the temperature difference-vegetation index framework is explored in South Florida, United States (US). The model performance is assessed against the ground observations collected at three flux stations between 2008 and 2011. It was found that the energy balance closure was improved by 9% at the long hydroperiod marsh site (i.e. US-Elm) and 6% at the short hydroperiod marsh site (i.e. US-Esm) after water heat storage (W) correction was applied on energy fluxes since W is more important than soil heat flux (G) for wetland ecosystems. The results further indicated that the model produced accurate EF estimates and performed the best on diurnal, then instantaneous, and lastly daily periods. Mental illness is one of the most common health conditions in the United States (US) and impacts over one-in-five adults in the US. Evidence suggests that lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals face a disproportionate burden of poor mental health compared to people who do not identify as members of this population. This study examines mental distress health disparities at and above the frequent mental distress (FMD) threshold among Florida adults who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual. Data from the 2017-2019 Florida Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) were used for the analyses. The primary dependent variables used for the analysis were frequent mental distress (FMD) and persistent mental distress (PMD). This study defines PMD as reporting 21 or more days of poor mental health. The independent variable of interest was sexual orientation. Overall, 5.5% of the population identified as LGB, 13.2% reported FMD, and 8% reported PMD. The study reveals a strong association between identifying as lesbian, gay, or bisexual and mental distress, both frequent and persistent. The findings also displayed Florida adults identifying as LBG also have greater odds of reporting persistent mental distress, controlling for other demographic variables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rapidly growing racially diverse ageing population in the United States presents unique challenges for the country's social, economic, and healthcare systems. Rising health care costs, increased patient cost-sharing, and limited financial resources make this generation of older Americans susceptible to large medical bills or debt, which disproportionally impacts older adults who are from racial/ethnic minority communities. Cost of care (CoC) conversations between patients and healthcare providers is one recommended approach for containing healthcare costs and alleviating patients' financial burden of care. The current study used focus group methods to qualitatively explore the contextual factors that influence CoC conversations in a diverse sample of older adults (N = 27). Three focus groups were held with non-Hispanic White (n = 10), Black/African American (n = 9), and Hispanic (n = 8) participants. Thematic analysis yielded four broad themes. The results suggest that CoC conversations do not occur with physicians. The facilitators of CoC conversations included positive provider affect, rapport/relationship building, and communication. Barriers included lack of physician training, wait time, lack of focus on the patient, language, provider preferences, fear of physicians, and religion. There were significant differences in the facilitators and barriers across racial/ethnic groups. It is critical for physicians to have the tools and training to successfully discuss CoC with older patients. Cultural competency training and provider awareness of patient preferences and expectations may be important when it comes to enhancing rapport and increase the likelihood of these important conversations within racial/ethnic minority communities. The Southeastern United States is facing agriculture crises, such as the ongoing epidemic of citrus greening disease that has forced the region to begin looking into alternative crops. Some of these belong to the Rosaceae genus Prunus, which encompasses many economically important species such as peaches, almonds, cherries, plums, and more. Peach production in Florida has become a very promising alternative to citrus; however, there are different limitations and challenges that peach production faces in this region. Differing climates coupled with edaphic challenges such as salinity, alkalinity, and waterlogging have been the focus of much of the research into the viability of peach production in the region. Using the genetic diversity of the Prunus genus is crucial to the success of peach as an alternative crop, due to the nature of its propagation on rootstocks. The development of new rootstock cultivars has been—and continues to be—the most efficient way not only to deal with the variety of problems associated with the climate and soil mentioned above but also to mitigate the effects of pests and diseases. The vegetative propagation of stone fruit rootstocks also has distinct advantages that seed propagation cannot achieve, including tree performance uniformity and the multiplication of interspecific hybrids. Tools used to select the best-performing rootstocks for the area such as the root system architecture (RSA) analysis are fundamental to this development process to ensure that the rootstock cultivars with the traits needed for success in the region are selected. This narrative review lays out all the challenges facing southeastern peach production in detail, discussing the research into these challenges and highlighting the tools that are most crucial to the success of peach production in the region to create a resource for researchers, growers, and breeders to more easily access this information. The COVID-19 pandemic has showcased the United States' reliance on essential workers, or those deemed necessary to continue critical societal functions. Black women remain overrepresented in essential positions and are on the frontlines of two pandemics: COVID-19 and racism. Using a phenomenological research design, we conducted semi-structured interviews to examine the experiences of 22 Black women essential workers navigating these dual pandemics. Salient themes of these experiences included: desire to and fear of protest; navigating extreme emotions; mixed levels of understanding from colleagues; and a rise in blatantly racist confrontations in the workplace. There are currently no studies examining healthcare access and utilization by Syrian Americans. A better understanding of the determinants of healthcare utilization among this group could help aid in the design of culturally competent programs. A self-administered survey was distributed at events across Southern California and Jacksonville, Florida from January 2018 to May 2019. Statistical analysis utilized multivariate regressions. Insurance coverage was associated with a preference for speaking Arabic (OR 0.433, p = 0.02) and increased length of residency (OR 1.04, p = 0.02). Routine checkup was associated with female sex (OR 1.97, p = 0.001), age (OR 1.05, p < 0.001), and insurance coverage (OR 6.96, p < 0.001). Colonoscopy compliance rate was 43.3% and positively associated with higher education (OR 2.70, p = 0.002), routine checkup (OR 7.61, p = 0.009) and increased length of residency (OR 1.06, p < 0.001). Syrian Americans may benefit from further health promotion campaigns with regard to insurance coverage, preventative care and cancer screenings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the association between nativity status (U.S.- vs foreignborn) and viral suppression among women of color (WOC) with HIV (HIV +) and whether this association was modified by education and housing. Methods: Data were from 549 HIV + WOC, who participated in the Health Resources and Services Administration-funded WOC Initiative 2009–2013. We used generalized estimating equation models to quantify the association between the respondents' nativity status and viral suppression. Results: After adjusting for covariates, foreign-born WOC were 2.2 times (95% confidence interval: 1.25, 3.85) more likely to achieve viral suppression than U.S.-born WOC. This association was not modified by education or housing status. Conclusions: Despite facing barriers to care, foreign-born WOC were more likely to achieve viral suppression than U.S.-born WOC. Programs aiming to end the HIV epidemic and reduce HIV disparities in the U.S. should consider these findings as they provide a more nuanced understanding of HIV + WOC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper assesses the impacts of physician-patient race-match, especially Black patients paired with Black physicians, on patient mortality. We draw on administrative data from Florida, linking hospital encounters from mid-2011 through 2014 to information from the Florida Physician Workforce Survey. Focusing on uninsured patients experiencing unscheduled hospital admissions who are conditionally randomly assigned to physicians, we find that physician-patient race-match for Black patients reduces the likelihood of within-hospital mortality by 0.28 percentage points, a 27 % reduction relative to the overall mortality rate. Modern policies are commonly evaluated not with randomized experiments but with repeated measures designs like difference-in-differences (DID) and the comparative interrupted time series (CITS). The key benefit of these designs is that they control for unobserved confounders that are fixed over time. However, DID and CITS designs only result in unbiased impact estimates when the model assumptions are consistent with the data at hand. In this paper, we empirically test whether the assumptions of repeated measures designs are met in field settings. Using a within-study comparison design, we compare experimental estimates of the impact of patient-directed care on medical expenditures to non-experimental DID and CITS estimates for the same target population and outcome. Our data come from a multi-site experiment that includes participants receiving Medicaid in Arkansas, Florida, and New Jersey. We present summary measures of repeated measures bias across three states, four comparison groups, two model specifications, and two outcomes. We find that, on average, bias resulting from repeated measures designs are very close to zero (less than 0.01 standard deviations; SDs). Further, we find that comparison groups which have pre-treatment trends that are visibly parallel to the treatment group result in less bias than those with visibly divergent trends. However, CITS models that control for baseline trends produced slightly more bias and were less precise than DID models that only control for baseline means. Overall, we offer optimistic evidence in favor of repeated measures designs when randomization is not feasible.

Most young children in the United States attend early care and education (ECE) programs, in which they eat 3-4 times daily. 'Division of responsibility' between adult and child means the adults are responsible for what, when and where , and the child is responsible for whether, what and how much to eat. A balanced division of responsibility can support children's development of healthy eating competency. This paper aims to describe division of responsibility during mealtimes during COVID-19 in Florida using a cross-sectional, mixed methods design. Questions were developed based on Trust Model and Social Cognitive Theory. A survey was completed by 759 ECE directors and 431 teachers, and 29 teachers completed in-depth interviews. COVID-19 increased teacher mealtime responsibilities. Most (95%+) ECE teachers provided meals at the same time and place daily (when and where) . Children determined what and how much they ate, but did not serve or handle food. Implications include modifying mealtime routines to minimize the risk of COVID-19 and support healthy eating with a balanced division of responsibility.
