This study investigated levels and sources of pollution and potential health risks associated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban street dust collected from Tyumen city, a large transport centre with one of the highest motorization rates in Russia. Twenty street dust samples were collected from four grades of roads in five different land use areas. Research methods included measurements of physical and chemical properties of street dust, concentrations of 18 PTEs using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, 12 PAHs using high-performance liquid chromatography, and statistical analysis of the data. Concentrations of Ni, Cr, Sb, and Mo, as well as medium and high molecular weight PAHs in urban street dust, were notably higher than in soils within the city, which indicates that transport is the main source of these elements. Concentrations of Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, Mn, and As in street dust of Tyumen were lower compared to many large cities, while Cr, Ni, and Co were higher. Concentrations of PAH were comparable to other large nonindustrial cities. Total contamination of street dust by both PTEs and PAHs showed more robust relationships with the number of roadway lanes rather than land use. The estimated carcinogenic risks were low in 70% of samples and medium in 30% of samples. Noncarcinogenic risks were attributed to exposure to Co, Ni, V, and As. Government information transparency is taken as a prominent instrument of environmental regulation in Chinese cities, especially in the current digital age. However, polluters' strategic emission and production behaviors across cities, confronted with changing information disclosure level, might make the policy's effect unexpected in practice. While many existing studies have explored the impact of institutions on pollution, government information disclosure only attracted little attention from empirical studies. Using the method framework of the spatial Durbin model, this study empirically investigates the impact of government information transparency on sulfur dioxide emissions with samples of 264 Chinese cities from 2005 to 2012. We find that a city's government information transparency negatively relates to its local emission level of sulfur dioxide. Moreover, a city's sulfur dioxide emissions positively relate to its neighboring cities' government information transparency levels. The further calculations of marginal effects show that the average of such a direct and local impact of government information transparency outweighs the average indirect effect a city receives from its neighboring cities, making government information transparency benefits to pollution abatement in total., (© 2021. This study intends to further reveal the relationship between air pollution and public health on a city scale in China and explore the spillover effect among cities. On the basis of collecting the panel data of 110 cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2010 to 2018, we establish a spatial econometric model to analyze the impacts of air pollution, economic development, and other factors on public health. According to the results, a significant spatial correlation exists between the public health and air pollution levels in all of the cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Air pollution also shows a spillover effect among these cities; the relationships between the industrial fume (dust) emissions, industrial sulfur dioxide emissions, and particulate matter (PM 2.5) concentration and the public health level are not simple linear relationships, but instead U-shaped curvilinear relationships. The economic development in recent years has contributed to the improvement of the public health level of the cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) was applied to estimate illicit drugs consumption at a provincial scale in southwest China. A large-scale wastewater sampling campaign was carried out from October to November in 2021 in 156 different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Two 24-h composite influent wastewater samples were collected in each WWTP. Concentrations of 11 illicit drugs or their metabolites were determined using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Benzoylecgonine, cocaine, 6-monoacetylmorphine, norketamine, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), and MDA were not detected in any of the wastewater samples. Methamphetamine and morphine were detected in >84% of samples, while ketamine was found in about 6% of the samples. The city-specific population-weighted consumption of methamphetamine and ketamine were in the range of 0.6-49.7 and N.D.-7.0 mg 1000 inh -1 day -1 , respectively, with provincial population-weighted values of 22.6 and 2.4 mg 1000 inh -1 day -1 in southwest China. The city-specific load of morphine varied from 3.2 to 10.2 mg 1000 inh -1 day -1 , with provincial population-weighted load of 6.7 mg 1000 inh -1 day -1 . Taking into account therapeutic use of morphine and codeine, the provincial heroin consumption was estimated to be 10.3 mg 1000 inh -1 day -1 , ranging from 1.7 to 18.5 mg 1000 inh -1 day -1 in 21 cities. Overall, the patterns of illicit drugs use were similar across southwest China, with high prevalence of methamphetamine and heroin, but relatively low use of ketamine. As a significant carbon emission source with high growth potential, the air transport sector plays a crucial role in China's decarbonisation efforts. However, the spatial pattern and evolutionary dynamics of aviation carbon emissions in China have not been thoroughly studied. This study proposed a framework to reveal the spatial characteristics and influencing factors of aviation carbon emissions at the city level. Using data from 2019 to construct the aviation carbon emissions network of China (ACENC), the novelty of the study lies in the subdivision of carbon emissions of air passenger transport into cities and intercity lines in China, which helps to reveal the spatial characteristics of individual cities in the intercity network. Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu, and Guangzhou were the cities with the highest carbon emissions, and the routes between these cities caused a significant amount of carbon emissions. >80 % of the total carbon emissions can be attributed to two communities in the network, owing to their large size and strong connections. Correlation analysis indicates that a city's carbon emissions are significantly related to its demographic and economic attributes as well as its connection with other cities, while a city's carbon emission intensity may be influenced by its centrality in the whole network and the structure of the community to which it belongs. The complexity and heterogeneity of urban land surfaces result in inconsistencies in near-surface winds, which in turn influence the diffusion and dispersion of air pollutants. In this study, we classified urban surface wind fields, quantified their steadiness, duration, and influence on air quality using hourly wind observations from 50 meteorological stations, as well as hourly PM 2.5 and NO 2 concentrations from 18 monitoring stations during 2017-2018 in Shenzhen, a mega city in southern China. We found that the K-means clustering technique was reliable for distinguishing surface wind patterns within the city. Urban surface-wind patterns greatly affected pollutant concentrations. When dominated by calm, northerly wind, high PM 2.5 /NO 2 concentration episodes occurred more frequently than those during other surface wind patterns. The urban surface transport index (USTI) was used to quantify the steadiness of surface wind classes. High pollutant concentrations were present during both high wind speed periods with a large USTI, indicating external pollutant transport, and during low wind speed periods with a small USTI, indicating pollutant accumulation. The threshold durations for surface wind fields (TDSWF) was proposed to quantify the impacts of surface wind persistence on air quality. We found that poor air quality occurred during the first several hours of a dominant wind pattern, indicating that transitions between wind patterns should be a particular focus when assessing air-quality deterioration. USTI and TDSWF are potentially applicable to other urban areas, owing to their clear definitions and simple calculation. Road deposited dust (RDD) is an important indicators of heavy metal contamination in urban areas. In this study, we measured eight heavy metals (V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb) in RDD collected from 34 different locations in Jammu city represented by different land uses such as industrial, urban-residential, high-density traffic, and sub-urban locations, and evaluated their ecological and health risks. The ratio of metal concentrations in RDD to their respective background levels varied as: Cu (3.94) > Pb (3.75) > Zn (3.01) > Cr (1.75) > Ni (1.51) > Mn (1.40) > V (1.35) > Fe (1.1) suggesting Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb were enriched anthropogenically. Geospatial maps revealed a heterogeneous distribution of metals in Jammu city with metal(s) specific hotspots primarily localized around high traffic density locations and industrial clusters. The index of geoaccumulation indicated 32%, 26%, 20%, 9%, and 8%, of samples belonged to "moderately polluted" category for Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr, and Ni respectively. Health index (HI) showed low non-carcinogenic hazards of metal contamination to adults but a high hazard to children. Though the values of total carcinogenic risks (TCR) (6.53E-05 to 3.71E-04) considerably exceeded the USEPA acceptable levels (1 × 10 -6  ≤ TCR <1 × 10 -4 ) suggesting high carcinogenic risks of metal contamination to both adults and children. Wearing a respirator is generally the most convenient individual intervention against ambient particulate matter (PM), and therefore there has been considerable research into its effectiveness. However, the effects of respirator intervention under different PM concentration settings have been insufficiently elucidated. We conducted a randomized, blinded, crossover intervention study in four representative cities in China in which 128 healthy university students spent 2-h walking along a busy road wearing either a real or a sham respirator and then spent the next 5-h indoors away from traffic pollution. Lung function, blood pressure, and heart rate variability were continuously measured throughout the visit. Linear mixed-effect models were fitted to evaluate the protective effects of respirator intervention on the cardiopulmonary indicators. Results showed that the beneficial effects of respirator intervention were only occasionally significant at specific time points or in specific cities or in selected parameters. Overall, respirator intervention was associated with reduced SBP (6.2 vs. 11.5 mmHg compared to baseline, p < 0.05) and increased LF (44 vs. 35 ms 2 compared to baseline, p < 0.05) over the 2-h walk, but no significant effects were found over the 7-h period. Respirators have significant effect modifications on the associations between PM 2.5 /PM 10 and the cardiopulmonary indicators, but the directions of effects were inconsistent. The intercity difference in the effects of respirator intervention was found significant, with Taiyuan and Shanghai to be the two cities with lower personal PM concentrations but more pronounced benefits. In conclusion, reducing personal exposure to PM can have some beneficial effects in some scenarios. However, respirators may not provide sufficient protection from air pollution overall, and we should avoid over-reliance on respirators and accelerate efforts to reduce emissions of pollutants in the first place. Recently, elevated blood pressure (BP) and hypertension (HTN) have caused a huge burden of health loss. Previous studies used ambient air pollutants as a proxy for individual exposure, limiting the assessment of its multiple exposure to health effects. For the first time, this study constructed individual PM 2.5 component (SO 4 2- , NO 3 - , NH 4 + , OM, and BC) exposure model DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph), DAG-oriented generalized linear model and random forest model, and explored the effects of single and multiple exposures to PM 2.5 components on BP at different stages by the generalized linear model (GLM) and Quantile g-Computation (QgC) model based on a large cohort study in China. We defined BP in four stages according to the 2017 ACC/AHA guidelines. After excluding the lack of key information, the cohort analyses ultimately included 9031 participants. Our results showed that the individual PM 2.5 component exposure model had good efficacy. Single or multiple exposure to PM 2.5 components had significant positive effects on normal BP to elevated BP and elevated BP to stage 1 HTN. In addition, males, the elderly and urban residents were more sensitive to PM 2.5 components. Soon after its emergence, COVID-19 became a global problem. While different types of vaccines and treatments are now available, still non-pharmacological policies play a critical role in managing the pandemic. The literature is enriched enough to provide comprehensive, practical, and scientific insights to better deal with the pandemic. This research aims to find out how the built environment and human factors have affected the transmission of COVID-19 on different scales, including country, state, county, city, and urban district. This is done through a systematic literature review of papers indexed on the Web of Science and Scopus. Initially, these databases returned 4264 papers, and after different stages of screening, we found 166 relevant papers and reviewed them. The empirical papers that had at least one case study and analyzed the effects of at least one built environment factor on the spread of COVID-19 were selected. Results showed that the driving forces can be divided into seven main categories: density, land use, transportation and mobility, housing conditions, demographic factors, socio-economic factors, and health-related factors. We found that among other things, overcrowding, public transport use, proximity to public spaces, the share of health and services workers, levels of poverty, and the share of minorities and vulnerable populations are major predictors of the spread of the pandemic. As the most studied factor, density was associated with mixed results on different scales, but about 58 % of the papers reported that it is linked with a higher number of cases. Promoting the downscaling and integration of zonal management and control of various environmental pollution sources is an effective way to systematically deal with the current high-intensity and complex environmental problems. Through single-factor and comprehensive pollutant emission intensity evaluation and cluster analysis, we built a full-coverage and cross-scale environmental spatial management and control system for pollution sources, then proposed environmental zoning patterns and pollution control strategies at three scales in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), China. At the grid scale, the reclassified 7 types of pollution source spaces can be divided into 5 levels based on pollution emission intensity, and the most urgent environmental control subjects can be determined accordingly. Up to the county scale, combined with emission intensity and regional functions, 305 counties can be divided into 5 control intensity zones, which directly correspond to different environmental control intensity, requirements and policies. Finally, at the city scale, 41 cities can be clustered into 7 pollution control zones, which are classified and named as the three-level form of geographic location, development orientation and pollution source characteristics. The AOD derived from the MODIS deep blue(DB) algorithm and AQI were used to investigate the correlation between AOD and AQI in seven major cities of Yangtze River Delta (YRD) from January to December 2019. The accuracy of MODIS AOD was validated by AERONET. Moreover, the AOD and AQI were studied to explore the annual and seasonal distribution characteristics, and the correlation analysis was carried out using five regression models. It was found: Ⅰ) There was a significant correlation between AOD and AERONET data (R 2 ˃ 0.80, RMSE = 0.106, and MAE = 0.089). Ⅱ) The highest AQI was observed in winter (83), followed by spring (76), autumn (74), and summer (72). Ⅲ) The monthly average AOD showed noticeable seasonal variations, which reached the highest in summer (0.91) and the lowest in winter (0.69), followed by spring and autumn. Ⅳ) Among the five models, the cubic model obtained the best results with R 2 ˃ 0.55. In the sub-seasonal regression model, the cubic model outperformed other models in spring (R 2 ˃ 0.57), summer (R 2 ˃ 0.76) and autumn (R 2 ˃ 0.38). However, in winter the composite model outperformed others (R 2 ˃ 0.68). Ⅴ) Considering annual data, the AOD can predict over 70% of the variations in AQI (0.41＜R 2 ＜0.81). These results demonstrate the feasibility of AOD derived from the MODIS DB algorithm in AQI prediction. Many studies have shown that fine particulate matter can cause health problems. Thus, effectively controlling fine particulate matter concentration is an important issue around the world. The Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration (TWEPA) divides Taiwan into seven air quality zones based on counties and cities for managing air quality and analyzing pollution transmission. However, this artificial division by administrative areas relatively poorly match natural conditions and topographical and geographic factors and hence poorly represent air quality characteristics. This study proposes an air quality sensitive map analysis framework, which uses hierarchical agglomerative clustering with empirical orthogonal function and analysis of variance methods, to provide more detailed, reasonable, and township-level air quality zones incorporating the different spatial-temporal characteristics over the region. The risk concept is introduced to evaluate PM 2.5 risk sensitivity for each administrative district, combining three aspects: hazard (PM 2.5 exceedance probability), exposure (population density of sensitive groups), and vulnerability (average wind speed). Considering air quality spatial-temporal characteristics, Taiwan can be optimally divided into 14 air quality zones. PM 2.5 risk is highest for western inland towns than western coastal towns, with eastern regions exhibiting least risk. Adopting the proposed air quality zones and clarifying high risk areas allows PM 2.5 causes to be identified for different air quality zones. This allows a targeted control strategy for high risk areas to effectively improve domestic air quality. Introduction: In France, a heat warning system (HWS) has been implemented almost two decades ago and rely on some official heat wave (HW) definitions. However, no study has compared the burden associated with a large set of alternative HW definitions to the official definitions. Such comparison could be particularly helpful to identify HW conditions for which effective HWS would minimize the health burden across various geographical contexts and possibly update thresholds to trigger HWS. The aim of this study is to identify (and rank) definitions that drive the highest health burden in terms of mortality to inform future HWS across multiple cities in France., Methods: Based on weather data for 16 French cities, we compared the two official definitions used in France to: i) the Excess Heat Factor (EHF) used in Australia, and ii) 18 alternative hypothetical HW definitions based on various combinations of temperature metrics, intensity, and duration. Propensity score matching and Poisson regressions were used to estimate the effect of each HW exposure on non-accidental mortality for the May-September period from 2000 to 2015., Results: The associations between HW and mortality differed greatly depending on the definition. The greatest burden of heat was 1,055 (95% confidence interval "CI": [856; 1,302]) deaths per summer and was obtained with the EHF. Characterising the daily PM2.5 concentration is crucial for air quality control. To govern the status of the atmospheric environment, a novel hybrid model for PM2.5 forecasting was proposed by introducing a two-stage decomposition technology of complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) and variational mode decomposition (VMD); subsequently, a deep learning approach of long short-term memory (LSTM) was proposed. Five cities with unique meteorological and economic characteristics were selected to assess the predictive ability of the proposed model. The results revealed that PM2.5 pollution was generally more severe in inland cities (66.98 ± 0.76 μg m -3 ) than in coastal cities (40.46 ± 0.40 μg m-3). The modelling comparison showed that in each city, the secondary decomposition algorithm improved the accuracy and prediction stability of the prediction models. When compared with other prediction models, LSTM effectively extracted featured information and achieved relatively accurate time-series prediction. The hybrid model of CEEMDAN-VMD-LSTM achieved a better prediction in the five cities (R2 = 0.9803 ± 0.01) compared with the benchmark models (R2 = 0.7537 ± 0.03). Background: Many studies have explored the epidemiological characteristics of influenza. However, most previous studies were conducted in a specific region without a national picture which is important to develop targeted strategies and measures on influenza control and prevention., Objectives: To explore the association between ambient temperature and incidence of influenza, to estimate the attributable risk from temperature in 30 Chinese cities with different climatic characteristics for a national picture, and to identify the vulnerable populations for national preventative policy development., Methods: Daily meteorological and influenza incidence data from the 30 Chinese cities over the period 2016-19 were collected. We estimated the city-specific association between daily mean temperature and influenza incidence using a distributed lag non-linear model and evaluated the pooled effects using multivariate meta-analysis. The attributable fractions compared with reference temperature were calculated. Stratified analyses were performed by region, sex and age., Results: Overall, an N-shape relationship between temperature and influenza incidence was found in China. The cumulative relative risk of the peak risk temperature (5.1 °C) was 2.13 (95%CI: 1.41, 3.22). And 60% (95%eCI: 54.3%, 64.3%) of influenza incidence was attributed to ambient temperature during the days with sensitive temperatures (1.6°C-14.4 °C). The ranges of sensitive temperatures and the attributable disease burden due to temperatures varied for different populations and regions. Heavy metal pollution in urban soils and dust is mostly caused by extensive anthropogenic activity during urbanization and industrialization. In this research study, the pollution characteristics, sources, ecological and human health risks of heavy metals in urban soil, and dust have been thoroughly evaluated. The research findings demonstrate that dust has a higher level of contamination than urban soil, such as Pb, Cu, and Zn metals are more contaminated in both urban soil and dust throughout the city, and Hg and As are also found in locations with a high concentration of heavy industrial companies. This implies that traffic emissions are still a significant source of metals in urban areas, though industrial companies also contribute. The health risk assessment model used to calculate human exposure revealed that the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of selected metals in soil and dust were generally in the low range, except for the carcinogenic risk from Cr in children. Statistical analysis revealed that Cr and Ni concentrations were mainly of natural origin, Cu and Zn have been sourced from traffic, whereas Pb, Hg, and As have been sourced from industrial activities. Vertical greening systems (VGS) are implemented in the building envelope to address challenges such as the urban heat island effect, energy reduction, air purification, support of biodiversity and recently greywater treatment (wastewater without urine and faeces) for reuse purposes. In this context, providing and using treated wastewater is a crucial point, as generally VGS are irrigated with tap water and thereby increase urban water depletion and pollution. In this study, we evaluate the multifunctionality of a pot-based VGS irrigated with untreated greywater and capable, as well, of acting as a greywater treatment system. The full-scale experimental system uses a low-tech irrigation technique and was investigated for different irrigation water volumes to identify the needed water demand to maximize local cooling by evapotranspiration and suitable plants for the different water conditions and water types. Plant development and greywater treatment capabilities were monitored from April 2020 until September 2021. Based on the highest irrigation volume, a local air temperature reduction of up to 3.4 °C was measured. The removal efficiencies for treating greywater were COD 80 %, TOC 74 %, TNb 70 %, NH 4 -N 81 % and Turbidity 79 %, respectively, and showed a decrease in the second year of operation. Ammonia (NH 3 ) is the most prevalent alkaline gas in the atmosphere and plays a critical role in air pollution and public health. However, scientific debate remains over whether agricultural emissions (e.g., livestock and fertilizer application) dominate NH 3 in urban atmosphere in China, which is one of the largest NH 3 emitters in the world. In this study, we first simultaneously collected the fine atmospheric particles (PM 2.5 ) at two heights (ground and 488 m) using the atmospheric observatories in Canton Tower, Guangzhou city, China for the measurements of stable nitrogen isotope composition in ammonium (δ 15 N-NH 4 + ). Our results showed that the average δ 15 N-NH 4 + value at the ground and the 488 m observatory were 16.9 ‰ and 3.8 ‰, respectively, implying that NH 4 + aerosols between the two heights probably have different sources. Moreover, we found that the δ 15 N-NH 4 + in Guangzhou or maybe in adjacent cities of the Pearl River Delta region as well, suggesting that the emission inventory of NH 4 + aerosol at the ground observatory was mainly derived from non-agricultural activities (76 %, e.g., vehicular exhaust), with the rest from agricultural sources (24 %). As for the 488 m observatory, the contribution of non-agricultural sources was 53 %, which is lower than the ground observatory. This is expected as the lower air receives more impacts from the local urban emission. However, the current "bottom-up" emission inventory illustrates that only ~20 % NH 3 in Guangzhou is associated with non-agricultural emissions, which is significantly lower than our δ 15 N-based results. Excessive urban temperature exerts a substantially negative impact on urban sustainability. Three-dimensional (3D) landscapes have a great impact on urban thermal environments, while their heat conditions and driving factors still remain unclear. This study mapped urban 3D neighborhoods and their associated SUHI (surface urban heat island) intensities in summer daytime across 57 Chinese cities, and then explored their relationships, driving factors as well as implications. Nine categories of urban 3D neighborhoods existed in Chinese cities and the 3D neighborhood of High Density & Medium Rise (HDMR) contributed the largest share of urban areas. The distribution of 3D neighborhoods varied among cities due to their distinct natural and economic traits. The average SUHI intensity can amount to 4.27 °C across all Chinese 3D neighborhoods. High Density & Low Rise (HDLR) and HDMR presented higher SUHI intensities than other 3D neighborhoods in China. Urban green space (UGI) and building height (BH) had great influences on SUHI intensities. The relative contribution of UGI decreased with the increase of building density and building height, but BH presented the opposite trend. The interaction of urban 3D landscapes and function zones led to highly complicated urban thermal environments, with higher SUHI intensities in industrial zones. Besides, the SUHI intensities of 3D neighborhoods presented great diurnal and seasonal variations, with higher SUHI intensities in HDHR and HDMR at nighttime in winter and summer. What's more, urban residents may suffer unequal heat risk inside cities due to the deviations of SUHI intensities among different 3D neighborhoods. Carbon efficiency has attracted increased attention due to the carbon neutrality goal of various responsible countries, including China. R&D element has been proved to be an effective method to promote carbon efficiency from a static perspective without considering spatial factors. However, due to regional inequality in China, the level of carbon efficiency and R&D element flow vary in different regions. If ignoring the importance of R&D element flow from a dynamic perspective and neglecting the spatial factors of carbon efficiency convergence, it may be not conducive to the improvement of carbon efficiency and its overall development. Thus, this study proposes a gravity model to figure out the specific condition of R&D element flow (including R&D personnel flow and R&D capital flow) between Chinese provinces and cities from 2009 to 2019, builds up a MinDS model with undesirable outputs to estimate carbon efficiency and analyzes the characteristics of regional carbon efficiency with kernel density estimation, and employs a spatial Durbin model to investigate the effect of R&D element flow on regional carbon efficiency convergence. The results show that, firstly, the R&D personnel flow and R&D capital flow show a gathering trend in the neighboring regions, and the flow distribution is unbalanced. Secondly, the overall regional carbon efficiency has improved at first, then decreased gradually. There are large spatial differences among Chinese regional carbon efficiency, and the carbon efficiency between provinces and cities converges. Thirdly, R&D element flow promotes regional carbon efficiency convergence. Rapid urbanization causes wetland ecosystem functions to degrade worldwide. This phenomenon negatively affects the resilience of ecosystem functions in the face of unexpected impacts, particularly climate change. An approach is required for combining resilience with management in a Wetland City. This study aims to model the resilience of ecosystem functions for climate change adaptation management in a Wetland City via system dynamics from 2021 to 2100. First, we set a system boundary through expert interviews to identify the main issues in the social-ecological system of a Wetland City. Second, we constructed a social-ecological system of a Wetland City that provides ecosystem function trade-offs between flood control and wildlife habitat provisioning. Then, we simulated the resilience of ecosystem functions according to different climate change adaptative management scenarios. Finally, we determined an appropriate scenario for minimizing the impacts of ecosystem function trade-offs reinforced by climate change. As a result, we recommend that the water level should be managed such that the controlled flood water level ranges from 12 to 14 m and that 30% of the willow areas should be thinned each year. Based on these simulation results, we proposed three climate change adaptive management strategies: considering long-term plans including short-term effects, networking with multiscale community participation, and applying sustainable wetland management to urban planning. Shrinking cities are a category of cities characterized by population loss, and the environmental problems of these cities are often neglected. Using panel data from 2012 to 2019, this paper investigates the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of carbon emissions in shrinking cities in China and the driving factors. The results find that: (1) From 2012 to 2019, carbon emissions tend to increase in shrinking cities and decrease in non-shrinking cities. Due to earlier industrial development and ecological neglect, shrinking cities in Northeast China have higher carbon emissions than other regions. (2) Population size, industrial structure and public services promote the growth of carbon emissions in shrinking cities. The influence of living environment on carbon emissions in shrinking cities is not significant. There is an environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) relationship between economic level and carbon emission. (3) In shrinking cities, the increase in commuting time and distance due to spatial expansion promotes the growth of carbon emissions. Foreign investment decreases with the loss of population, which reduces carbon emissions. Technological progress gradually declines as investment in science and technology decreases, which makes carbon emissions grow. Although compact urban form plays an important role in constraining emissions of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), the boundary for the impact of compact urban form on these emissions has nevertheless received little attention. We consequently applied the entropy weight method and several key landscape metrics to a dataset from 295 cities in China to quantify urban form compactness (UFC) between 2000 and 2015. The STIRPAT model then was employed to estimate the impact of UFC on CO 2 emissions, and a panel threshold regression model was used to estimate threshold effects capable of limiting the impact of compact urban form on emissions. Although CO 2 emissions increased sharply over the 15-year study period, a significant negative relationship between UFC and CO 2 emissions was detected. Two thresholds of UFC were detected, and this allowed three categories to be differentiated: before the first threshold, between the two thresholds, and after the second threshold. These categories were respectively associated with no impact, strong impact, and weak impact of UFC on reduction of carbon emissions in the 295 cities. Carbon emissions reduction consequently becomes effective when the UFC exceeds the first threshold and effectiveness persists but at a reduced level when the UFC exceeds the second threshold. Further temporal analysis confirmed that an increasing number of mostly small- and medium-sized cities could constrain their future carbon emissions by adopting a compact urban form. Thus, government policies should emphasize UFC as a strategy to reduce CO 2 emissions. As a momentous policy tool for spatial management, urban administrative boundary expansion (UABE) significantly impacts resource reorganization and development modes. However, the environmental effects of UABE are easily ignored. Whether UABE can also impove the environmental quality in addition to its economic effects remains to be answered. To fill this gap, we took the city-county merger policy (CCMP) in China as quasi-experimental evidence and empirically investigated the impacts of CCMP on air pollution based on the difference-in-difference method. The impact mechanisms were also analyzed from a whole-process perspective. The results demonstrate that, apart from expanding the urban scale, UABE can improve urban air quality as well. Further analysis shows that the positive effect is mainly realized by source control and process management, rather than end-of-pipe treatment. Besides, the impacts of UABE on air pollution exhibit obvious spatial heterogeneous characteristics. We also reported that the environmental effects of UABE are largely dependent on governmental control, rather than market factors. Ecological compensation in the Yellow River Basin aims to improve its ecological and environmental management capacity. Based on data on land-use changes in the Yellow River Basin from 2010 to 2020, this study used the equivalent factor method to assess the value of ecosystem services in the basin. This was measured at three spatial scales in the upper, middle, and lower reaches, encompassing; nine provinces and 72 cities. The priority and amount of ecological compensation were determined for the Yellow River Basin regions. Results show that (1) The total value of ecosystem services in the Yellow River Basin increased from 1798.317 billion yuan in 2010 to 1838.259 billion yuan in 2020. Grasslands had the highest total ecosystem service value in 2020, accounting for 46.11%. (2) The value of ecosystem services in the Yellow River Basin region is upstream > midstream > downstream. Qinghai Province has the highest value of ecosystem services among the nine provinces, and the level of economic development in each region is inversely correlated with the value of ecosystem services. (3) The ecosystem service value and the economic development level of the cities in the Yellow River Basin are positively and negatively correlated with the priority of ecological compensation, respectively. Among them, the cities in the upper reaches are the most urgent targets for national ecological compensation. (4) The total ecological compensation in the Yellow River Basin in 2020 was approximately 122.63 billion yuan. Further, the amount of vertical ecological compensation to be paid by the state was approximately 114.673 billion yuan, and the horizontal compensation to be borne between provinces was approximately 7.957 billion yuan. Rapid urbanization puts a lot of pressure on urban water pollution from point and non-point sources, calling for the practical, specific, and integrated management of urban drainage systems (UDS). The structural design of an integrated UDS is essential for highly complex and uncertain urban water management. In this study, we developed a multi-objective robust optimization model to explore the optimal structures of UDS considering system uncertainty. We applied this model to City B, northern China, to illustrate its effectiveness. The results show that the model can produce optimal designs with a more robust performance in terms of structural uncertainty. When the uncertainty degree ranges from 5% to 20%, a considerable extra cost (increased by 1.10-2.68 times) is required to improve the robustness of UDS. With the increase in structural uncertainty, the fraction of the cost invested in the stormwater subsystem increased from 10.2% to 27.2%. The findings showed that stormwater management is efficient in coping with system uncertainty. Commercial kitchens may pose significant health risks to workers because they generate large quantities of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ). In our study, the concentrations and emission rates of PM 2.5 in cooking environments were measured for six types of commercial kitchens that used electricity and natural gas (including traditional Chinese kitchens, western kitchens, teppanyaki kitchens, fried chicken kitchens, barbecue kitchens, and hotpot cooking area). Furthermore, a preliminary health risk assessment of the chefs was undertaken using the annual PM 2.5 inhalation and PM 2.5 deposition rates into the upper airways and tracheobronchial and alveolar regions of the human body. Results showed that cooking in the teppanyaki kitchen generated the highest amount of PM 2.5 , with a mean emission rate of 7.7 mg/min and a mean mass concentration of 850.4 ± 533.4 μg/m³ in the breathing zone. Therefore, teppanyaki kitchens pose highest PM 2.5 exposure risks to chefs, with the highest rate of PM 2.5 deposition in the upper airways (6.38 × 10 5  μg/year), followed by Chinese kitchens. The PM 2.5 concentrations and emission rates of each kitchen varied greatly with the dishes cooked. The mean PM 2.5 concentration was the highest during Chinese stir-frying, with the peak concentration reaching more than 20,000 μg/m 3 , followed by pan-frying, deep-frying, stewing, and boiling. A rise in PM 2.5 concentration was also observed during the start of stir-frying and in the middle to late stages of pan-frying and grilling meat. This study addresses the role of natural hazard insurance in two European countries with different insurance markets and socioeconomic conditions: Sweden and Portugal. The analyses were conducted at the national, regional (Southern Sweden and Lisbon Metropolitan Area - LMA), and local (Malmö and Lisbon cities) scales. Most damage caused by weather and climate-related (WCR) hazards during the 1980-2019 period was not covered by insurance companies in Sweden (71%) and Portugal (91%). An insurance affordability analysis was performed using income for the national and regional scales. Unaffordability is higher in Southern Sweden than in LMA, implying that better socioeconomic conditions do not necessarily mean a higher average capacity to pay for insurance. At the local scale, urban flooding was analysed for Malmö (1996-2019) and Lisbon (2000-2011) using insurance databases, in which the most relevant 21st century rainfall events for each city are included (2014 and 2008, respectively). The influence of terrain features on flooding claims and payouts was determined using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) spatial analyses. The flat Malmö favours ponding and extensive flooding, while the distance to the drainage network and flow accumulation are key factors to promote flooding along valley bottoms in the hilly Lisbon. Flooding hotspots tend to result from a combination of higher depths/lower velocities (accumulation of floodwaters and ponding) and not from a pattern of lower depths/higher velocities (shallow overland flow). Already in early 2000s, concerns have been growing in the EU about increasing use of cocaine and it is estimated that below 1 % of the population administer the drug by smoking crack cocaine. New available data suggests an increase in the use of crack cocaine and an increase in the number of crack cocaine users entering treatment has been reported in several European countries. Robust estimations of crack cocaine use are however not available yet. The use of crack cocaine has long been associated with severe adverse socio-economic conditions as well as mental health problems, such as suicide ideation and depression. The aim of this study was to assess spatial trends in population-normalized mass loads of crack cocaine biomarkers (i.e., anhydroecgonine and anhydroecgonine methyl ester) in 13 European cities in six countries (the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Italy). Furthermore, temporal trends over a five-year period were evaluated through the analysis of historic samples collected in the Netherlands. Finally, the stability of the crack cocaine biomarkers in wastewater was investigated through batch experiments. The samples were analyzed with a new developed and validated hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry method. Targeted crack cocaine biomarkers were found in all cities. Also, crack cocaine biomarker was detected in wastewater from 2017 to 2021 in the Netherlands, but no significance between the years were found. With respect to biomarker in-sample stability, AEME was found to be stable in wastewater. The improvement of carbon emission efficiency is crucial to the realization of the global carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. Based on the panel data of 282 cities from 2004 to 2018 in China, this paper employs the stochastic frontier analysis approach combined with the Sheppard distance function to calculate the total factor carbon emission efficiency of each city. Regarding the low-carbon pilot city policy as a quasi-natural experiment, we evaluate the impact of the pilot policy on carbon emission efficiency and its spatial spillover effect using the spatial difference-in-differences model. The results show that the pilot policy can significantly improve the carbon emission efficiency and has long-term dynamic effects. Also, the effect of the policy has spatial spillover, and has a positive impact on the neighboring cities. Mechanism analysis implies that optimal allocation of resources, energy conservation and green technology innovation make the low-carbon policy play an important intermediary role in promoting carbon emission efficiency. Besides, the effects of the pilot policy have obvious heterogeneity, especially cities in large, higher population densities and the north. This study used panel data for 2166 county-level units in China between 2000 and 2017 to characterize carbon productivity's temporal and spatial evolution in Chinese counties. The "catch-up effect" of carbon offsets between counties was examined, and this was used to measure the carbon offset potential and analyze its spatial differences. The results indicated that: (1) China's carbon productivity increased from 2000 to 2017; carbon productivity in eastern China was the highest, and carbon productivity in northeast China was the lowest. A polarization to unipolarization evolutionary trend was evident. (2) Considering the spatial differences in carbon productivity, the overall difference in carbon productivity in China from 2000 to 2017 first decreased and then increased; the contribution rate of differences between cities and counties to the overall difference was relatively stable, at around 39.88 %. The contribution rate of the differences between zones to the overall difference was the lowest, remaining stable at around 2.49 %. (3) In terms of the spatial distribution of the carbon offset potential, the eastern region exhibited the highest average carbon offset potential. The emissions reduction of CO 2 and air pollutants are the main task in China. The two have the same roots and they interact with each other. However, CO 2 and air pollutants are quite different in space, so it is of great practical significance to explore the spatial differences of their synergy. As PM 2.5 and O 3 are more concerned at present, thus, this paper examined the decoupling of CO 2 , PM 2.5 and O 3 from GDP in China's 296 cities using the latest available data from 2015 to 2016. And the spatial differences of synergy among CO 2 , PM 2.5 and O 3 were quantitatively analyzed by using spatial autocorrelation analysis and geographically weighted regression model. The results showed that: (1) The cities achieving the three synergy emissions reduction were mainly in the southeast of China. (2) Only 26 cities had achieved the strong decoupling of CO 2 , PM 2.5 and O 3 from GDP. (3) The synergy characteristics between CO 2 and PM 2.5 , CO 2 and O 3 were different. Background: Studies on the obesogenic effect of air pollution on children have been mixed and sparse. Moreover, due to insufficient air monitoring, few studies have investigated the role of more tiny but unregulated particles (ambient particles with a diameter of 0.1 μm or less, ultrafine particles)., Objective: We sought to explore the associations between long-term exposure to ambient ultrafine particles (UFPs) and childhood obesity in Chinese children., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we randomly recruited 47,990 children, aged 6-18 years, from seven cities in Northeastern China between 2012 and 2013. Child age- and sex-specific z-scores for body mass index (BMI Z-score) and weight status were generated using the World Health Organization growth reference. Four-year average concentrations of UFPs and airborne particulates of diameter ≤ 1 μm (PM 1 ), ≤2.5 μm (PM 2.5 ), and ≤10 μm (PM 10 ) were estimated at home, using neural network simulated WRF-Chem model and spatiotemporal model, respectively. Confounder-adjusted generalized linear mixed models examined the associations between air pollution and BMI Z-score and the prevalence of childhood obesity., Result: We found that UFPs exposure was associated with greater childhood BMI Z-score and a higher likelihood of obesity. Compared with the lowest quartile, higher quartiles of UFPs were associated with greater odds for obesity prevalence in children (i.e., the adjusted OR was 1.25; 95 % CI, 1.12-1.39; 1.43; 95 % CI, 1.27-1.61; and 1.41; 95 % CI, 1.25-1.58 for the second, third, and fourth quartile, respectively). Similar associations were observed for PM 1 , PM 2.5 , and PM 10 , and were greater in boys and children living close to roadways., Conclusions: Long-term UFPs exposure was associated with a greater likelihood of childhood obesity, and stronger associations on BMI Z-score were observed in boys and children living close to roadways. Rapid urbanization has altered landscape patterns and ecological functions, causing a decline in ecosystem service and generating many ecological and environmental issues. Studying the spatiotemporal interaction between urbanization and ecosystem service (ES) can provide effective supports for regional sustainability and policy formulation. This research utilizes the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) as a case to analyze the spatiotemporal interaction between multi-urbanization indicators and multi-ESs over a large-scale region. The results show that the urbanization process in the YREB evolves from a rapidly growing state to a steady state with a slower rise. The urbanization level of the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration is relatively higher than the other regions. The distribution pattern of urbanization shows an overall characteristic of lower urbanization in the west and higher in the east. From 2009 to 2016, ecosystem service value (ESV) in the YREB decreased first and then increased, ESV in 2016 showed a reduction of 12.768 billion yuan compared with the 2009 level. ESV increases gradually from highly urbanized areas to those with lower levels of urbanization. Areas with high ESV levels are distributed at the middle reaches of YREB. There is a U-shaped curve relationship between urbanization and ESV, the ESV sharply increased when the urbanization index exceeded 0.6 in 2012. Land urbanization has the greatest impact on ESV among the four subtypes of urbanization indicators. Urbanization and ESV show the synergy relationship mostly in the eastern region, accounting for 18.18% of the total 110 cities. By contrast, they present the trade-off relationship in northern, southern and central regions, occupying 47.27% of the total observations. Urban tree cover is widely regarded as an environmentally-friendly and effective urban cooling approach. Meteorological variables, including air temperature, wind speed, and humidity, have complex impacts on the cooling efficiency (CE) of urban trees (i.e., the negative ratio of the land surface temperature change to the tree cover percentage change). This means that increasing the urban tree cover to alleviate heat stress is not necessarily suitable for cities with different climates. African cities are confronted with larger heat risks but lack considerations for the effectiveness of urban tree cooling in urban planning. In this study, 40 African major cities with population greater than 500,000 in different climatic regions were selected, and 1459 CEs during each city's corresponding warmest 3 consecutive months were calculated combined with the availability of meteorological data. The generalized additive models revealed the non-linear impacts of air temperature/temperature dew point difference on CE, which were more evident in arid cities. The CE of urban trees actually increased and then decreased along with the increase of air temperature/temperature dew point difference, and the turning point were 34 °C/26 °C, respectively. African cities would have different frequencies of warm days with an air temperature over 34 °C under different Shared Socioeconomic Pathways within the next 30 years. Specially, the cities around Sahel would suffer up to 40-60% days over 34 °C, which meant their urban tree CE would decrease along with air temperature increase. The influence of regional transport on aerosol pollution has been explored in previous studies based on numerical simulation or surface observation. Nevertheless, owing to inhomogeneous vertical distribution of air pollutants, vertical observations should be conducted for a comprehensive understanding of regional transport. Here we obtained the vertical profiles of aerosol and its precursors using ground-based multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) at the Nancheng site in suburban Beijing on the southwest transport pathway of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region, China, and then estimated the vertical profiles of transport fluxes in the southwest-northeast direction. The maximum net transport fluxes per unit cross-sectional area, calculated as pollutant concentration multiply by wind speed, of aerosol extinction coefficient (AEC), NO 2 , SO 2 and HCHO were 0.98 km -1  m s -1 , 24, 14 and 8.0 μg m -2 s -1 from southwest to northeast, which occurred in the 200-300 m, 100-200 m, 500-600 m and 500-600 m layers, respectively, due to much higher pollutant concentrations during southwest transport than during northeast transport in these layers. The average net column transport fluxes were 1200 km -1  m 2 s -1 , 38, 26 and 15 mg m -1 s -1 from southwest to northeast for AEC, NO 2 , SO 2 and HCHO, respectively, in which the fluxes in the surface layer (0-100 m) accounted for only 2.3%-4.2%. Evaluation only based on surface observation would underestimate the influence of the transport from southwest cities to Beijing. Northeast or weak southwest transports dominated in clean conditions with PM 2.5 <75 μg m -3 and intense southwest transport dominated in polluted conditions with PM 2.5 >75 μg m -3 . Exposure to potentially toxic trace elements (PTTEs) in inhalable particulate matter (PM 10 ) is associated with an increased risk of developing cardiorespiratory diseases. Therefore, in multi-source polluted urban contexts, a spatially-resolved evaluation of health risks associated with exposure to PTTEs in PM is essential to identify critical risk areas. In this study, a very-low volume device for high spatial resolution sampling and analysis of PM 10 was employed in Terni (Central Italy) in a wide and dense network (23 sampling sites, about 1 km between each other) during a 15-month monitoring campaign. The soluble and insoluble fraction of 33 elements in PM 10 was analysed through a chemical fractionation procedure that increased the selectivity of the elements as source tracers. Total carcinogenic risk (CR) and non-carcinogenic risk (NCR) for adults and children due to concentrations of PTTEs in PM 10 were calculated and quantitative source-specific risk apportionment was carried out by applying Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) to the spatially-resolved concentrations of the chemically fractionated elements. PMF analysis identified 5 factors: steel plant, biomass burning, brake dust, soil dust and road dust. Steel plant showed the greatest risk contribution. Total CR and NCR, and source-specific risk contributions at the 23 sites were interpolated using the ordinary kriging (OK) method and mapped to geo-reference the health risks of the identified sources in the whole study area. This also allowed risk estimation in areas not directly measured and the assessment of the risk contribution of individual sources at each point of the study area. The rapid industrialization has contributed to the miracle of economic growth in China, while also caused a series of environmental problems. As one of the most concerning urban disease in China, the aggravation of haze pollution is closely related to the accelerating urbanization and industrialization process in recent years, and the strong spatial diffusion makes the negative externality of haze pollution more harmful. This characteristic of haze pollution is closely related to the spatial structure of industrial sectors, especially the agglomeration of industrial sectors. This paper established a spatial economic framework to investigate the spillover effect of industrial agglomeration on haze pollution based on satellite raster map data of PM 2.5 and location entropy index, and further discuss the question that whether industrial agglomeration can achieve a balanced development for both economic growth and environmental quality. The results indicated that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between industrial agglomeration and haze pollution, and the indirect effect from spatial spillover dominated this impact. Industrial agglomeration has a single threshold effect on the knowledge spillover and the utilization of pollution disposal infrastructure of industrial sectors. Only when the agglomeration level reaches the threshold value, the scale effect can be realized to promote the air quality. As the total water resources consumption control and carbon mitigation continuous improvement, the weak water-carbon incorporate management is increasingly exposed. In this study, a water-carbon nexus assessment framework is proposed to analyze the nexus relationship between water consumption and carbon emission, and distinguishes the coupled water-carbon transmission intensity and the transfer paths under regional and industrial scales. According to the practical input-output table, water consumption, and carbon emission information, the framework is applied to Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration (BTHUA), a population, resource, and trade intensive area of China. Inter-regional/intra-regional water consumption and carbon emission transfer fluxes between sectors, the pairwise ecological relationship, and the water-carbon nexus were analyzed. Results indicated that the water-carbon transfer indexes from Hebei to Beijing and Tianjin were 161.85 kg/m 3 and 113.88 kg/m 3 in the study period, along with the most water consumption and carbon emission, and the worst water-carbon nexus. From the industrial perspective, electricity and gas supplying industry provided 7.8% and 29.1% of the total carbon transfer in Tianjin and Hebei, as the most key node sectors on the water-carbon nexus in the BTHUA. Coal is the most extensively used fossil fuel in China. It is well documented that coal combustion detrimentally affected air quality, yet the contribution of coal mining activity to air pollution is still largely unknown. Homing pigeons have been applied to assess the occurrence of atmospheric pollutants within cities. Herein, we sampled homing pigeons from both urban and mining areas in a typical coal industry city (Datong, China) as biomonitors for assessing local air pollution. Target organic contaminants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were frequently detected in lung, liver, and fat tissues of the pigeons. The pollutants were predominately accumulated in lung, validating that respiration was the main accumulation route for these compounds in homing pigeons. In addition, pathological damage examination in lung and liver tissues revealed that the exposure to atmospheric pollutants impaired pigeon health. While the concentrations of PCBs and OCPs were similar in pigeons from urban and mining areas, the concentrations of PAHs were higher in pigeons from urban area. In contrast, more elevated levels of PBDEs (particularly BDE-209) were found in the mining area, which was consistent with the greater pathological damages and particulate matter levels. Unlike coal combustion, coal mining activities did not increase atmospheric PAH exposure to homing pigeons, but intensified PBDE contamination along with increasing emission of particulate matters. The U-shaped association between health outcomes and ambient temperatures has been extensively investigated. However, such analyses cannot fully estimate the mortality burden of climate change because the features of the association (e.g., minimum mortality temperature) vary with human adaptation; thus, they are not generalizable to different locations. In this study, we assumed that humans could adapt to regular temperature variations; and thus examined the all-cause mortality attributable to temperature anomaly (TA), an indicator widely utilized in climate science to measure irregular temperature fluctuations, across 115 cities in the United States (US). We first used quasi-Poisson regressions to obtain the city-specific TA-mortality associations, then used meta-regression to pool these city-specific estimates. Finally, we calculated the number of TA-related deaths using the uniform pooled association, then compared it to the estimates from city-specific associations, which had been controlled for adaptation. Meta-regression showed a U-shaped TA-mortality association, centered at a TA near 0. According to the pooled association, 0.579 % (95 % confidence interval [CI]: 0.465-0.681 %), 0.394 % (95 % CI: 0.332-0.451 %), and 0.185 % (95 % CI: 0.107-0.254 %) of all-cause deaths were attributable to all anomalous temperatures (TA ≠ 0), anomalous heat (TA > 0), and anomalous cold (TA < 0), respectively. At the city level, heat-related deaths estimated from the pooled association were in good agreement with heat-related deaths estimated from the city-specific associations (R 2  = 0.84). However, the cold-related deaths estimated from the two methods showed a weaker correlation (R 2  = 0.07). Radon is the main source of radiation that people receive naturally. Twenty-four samples of drinking water were collected and analyzed from all communities of Yerevan city, Armenia, in order to assess Radon associated radiological risk on population health through the drinking water. The measurements were performed by Alfarad Plus - ARP radon meter. The obtained values were compared with the national and international recommended values and they were within the Maximum contaminant level recommended by the US Environmental Protection Agency, WHO and EU commission, also the national norms. As a consequence of direct consumption of drinking water annual effective doses due to the ingestion and inhalation of Radon were calculated. Although collective action is needed to address many environmental challenges, it cannot proceed in the absence of collective identity, that is, evidence of group belongingness expressed in or via communicative behavior. This study looked for evidence of a collective identity in newspaper articles that referenced the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. The data were drawn from local papers published in municipalities located at the headwaters of the Susquehanna River, midway down the Susquehanna, and where the river meets the Bay. Computerized content analysis assessed the frequency with which the Chesapeake Bay and watershed were mentioned alongside a set of keywords thought to represent different facets of identity (e.g., agriculture, fishing, swimming). The results showed substantial variation in frequency across time and place but low absolute levels of coverage of the Bay and the watershed. Multidimensional scaling revealed different structures to collective identity as a function of place. These differences in content may be attributable to varying demographic and environmental characteristics along with proximity to the Bay. But, to the extent that media contribute to collective identity among residents of the watershed at all, they do so in a complex and heterogeneous manner., (© 2022. Dengue is an endemic disease in more than 100 countries, but there are few studies about the effects of hydroclimatic variability on dengue incidence (DI) in tropical dryland areas. This study investigates the association between hydroclimatic variability and DI (2008-2018) in a large tropical dryland area. The area studied comprehends seven municipalities with populations ranging from 32,879 to 2,545,419 inhabitants. First, the precipitation and temperature impacts on interannual and seasonal DI were investigated. Then, the monthly association between DI and hydroclimatic variables was analyzed using generalized least squares (GLS) regression. The model's capability to reproduce DI given the current hydroclimatic conditions and DI seasonality over the entire time period studied were assessed. No association between the interannual variation of precipitation and DI was found. However, seasonal variation of DI was shaped by precipitation and temperature. February-July was the main dengue season period. A precipitation threshold, usually above 100 mm, triggers the rapid DI rising. Precipitation and minimum air temperature were the main explanatory variables. A two-month-lagged predictor was relevant for modeling, occurring in all regressions, followed by a non-lagged predictor. The climate predictors differed among the regression models, revealing the high spatial DI variability driven by hydroclimatic variability. GLS regressions were able to reproduce the beginning, development, and end of the dengue season, although we found underestimation of DI peaks and overestimation of low DI. These model limitations are not an issue for climate change impact assessment on DI at the municipality scale since historical DI seasonality was well simulated. However, they may not allow seasonal DI forecasting for some municipalities. In this study, the human health risks of potentially harmful elements (PHEs) in urban surface deposited sediments (USDS) were examined by collecting urban dust samples, measuring their PHE concentrations, and using index evaluation. About 35, 12 and 16 samples are represented a green zones, roads, driveways and sidewalks in residential areas of Ekaterinburg, respectively. The dust fraction (0.002-0.1 mm) was obtained by sieving, filtration, and decantation process. Total concentrations of 10 PHEs were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The highest concentrations of Pb were found in USDS from green zones, while Fe, V, Mn, Co, Ni, Sn, and Sb on roads, Cu and Zn on driveways and sidewalks. The contamination levels in the investigated land-use areas were studied, where the highest contamination was contributed from Sb in the driveways and sidewalk. Moreover, the pollution in the studied zones was a high load, contributing to anthropogenic activities and traffic emissions. No non-cancerogenic risk was attributed from the PHEs based on the results of health indices (HI < 1) for both adult and children, except Co and Ni which has HI > 1 for children. The ambient air quality is a complex dynamical system that is shocked by a number of subsystems, such as government policies, industry regulation adjustment and internationalization. To identify the drivers for ambient air quality, a grey spatial extension relational analysis model is proposed. Firstly, a spatial extension method for one-dimensional time series of complex systems is introduced, and the two key parameters are obtained based on the grey similarity and proximity relational analysis models. Secondly, grey relational coefficient is calculated by the difference of the three-dimensional vector, and a grey spatial extension relational analysis model is presented. Furthermore, the properties of the proposed model were investigated. Finally, the model is used to identify the drivers of the ambient air quality in eastern coastal Shandong Province, China. Results suggest that the drivers of the ambient air quality vary among cities, but with some common ones. It is crucial to precisely estimate the municipal solid waste (MSW) amount for its sustainable management. Owing to learning complicated and abstract features between the factors and target, deep learning has recently emerged as one of the useful tools with potential to predict the MSW amount. Therefore, this study aimed to design an MSW amount predicted system in Shanghai, consisting of Attention (A), one-dimensional convolutional neural network (C), and long short-term memory (L), to investigate the relationship between exogenous series (24 socioeconomics factors and past MSW amount) and target (MSW amount). The role of Attention, 1D-CNN, LSTM played on the MSW predicted amount also have investigated. The results show that attention is crucial for decoding the encoding information, which would improve performance between predicted and known MSW amount (R 2 in A-L-C, L-A-C, L-C-A was 89.45%, 90.77%, and 95.31%, respectively.). CNN modules appear to be positioned similarly across the MSW predicted system. Finally, R 2 in L-A-C, A-L-C, and A-C-L was 85.44%, 91.61%, and 89.45%, which suggested that LSTM as an intermediary between CNN and Attention modules seems a wise measure to predict the MSW amount based on the correlation efficiency. Previous research has shown that walking and cycling could help alleviate stress in cities, however there is poor knowledge on how specific microenvironmental conditions encountered during daily journeys may lead to varying degrees of stress experienced at that moment. We use objectively measured data and a robust causal inference framework to address this gap. Using a Bayesian Doubly Robust (BDR) approach, we find that black carbon exposure statistically significantly increases stress, as measured by Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), while cycling and while walking. Augmented Outcome Regression (AOR) models indicate that greenspace exposure and the presence of walking or cycling infrastructure could reduce stress. None of these effects are statistically significant for people in motorized transport. To accurately evaluate the development level of ecological civilization in coastal cities, this paper proposes an evaluation algorithm of coastal city ecological civilization development based on Improved BP neural network, constructs the evaluation index system, and establishes the BP neural network-based evaluation model. By collecting the relevant data of 30 cities in China Line standardization, as the input learning matrix, entropy and coefficient of variation are used to evaluate the development level of ecological civilization. Through 5000 training times, the error accuracy is close to 10-7, and the cities with low ecological civilization level and less cultivated land resources per capita are found out. Based on the improved BP neural network method, according to the development level of coastal cities, the ecological culture of coastal cities is put forward as a whole.
