Continental margins that exhibit high terrigenous input are generally located near deltas that are capable of transporting large quantities of sediments into the basin. However, in rare cases, high terrigenous sedimentation occurs in regions deprived of major riverine systems where the sedimentary pathway is enigmatic. One such case is the Neogene of the Pelotas Basin of Brazil and Uruguay, adjacent to the La Plata River mouth. Since the Miocene, anomalous sedimentation formed a giant progradational wedge, the Rio Grande Cone, one of the largest submarine fan-like features on Earth. To understand the Neogene evolution of the margin and the origins of the Rio Grande Cone, here we present a seismic-stratigraphic framework based on well-logs and 2D seismic data. Three depositional environments are identified: (1) on the shelf, upper Miocene to Pliocene fluvial channels delivered sand deposits on the mud-dominated shelf; (2) on the slope, sediment instability resulted in structural deformation and multiple phases of mass transport deposition and (3) on the lower slope and basin floor, large contourite drifts formed by sediment reworking. We classify the Rio Grande Cone as a megaslide complex, due to its depositional and structural setting. Local deltaic systems were active on the shelf in the Neogene, but the limited size of their paleo-drainage systems in comparison to the volume of sedimentation in the margin suggests that an additional sedimentary pathway existed. In this sense, the demise of an epicontinental sea over the La Plata Basin during the Neogene likely enabled the input of large volumes of fine sediments into the margin, via the La Plata plume water. We suggest that the desiccation of this epicontinental sea and the intensification of ocean currents since the middle Miocene explains the anomalous Neogene terrigenous influx into the SW Atlantic margin. Cap carbonates overlying Marinoan (635 Ma) glacial deposits worldwide record extreme paleoceanographic changes that may have triggered the rise of macroscopic life. However, the lack of geochronological constraints on these successions hinders reconciling climate and environmental change. Their upper part is marked by anomalous aragonite precipitation associated with large transgression and oxygenation of the post‐glacial ocean. Neomorphism of these deposits to low‐Mg calcite often includes centimetre‐scale seafloor crystal fans. We used in‐situ U–Pb dating and C and Sr isotopic analyses in the Puga cap carbonate to estimate the nature and timing of the neomorphism process. An age of 623 ± 3 [9] Ma (δ13C ~ −6‰ and 87Sr/87Sr ~ 0.7071–0.7075) for a blocky calcite cement is consistent with solution‐reprecipitation within the fans during final filling and diagenetic stabilization of the cap carbonate fabric. This result improves previous cap carbonate direct dating, providing a rare Lower Ediacaran chronostratigraphic reference. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The classic fill‐and‐spill model is widely applied to interpret topographic controls on depositional architecture and facies distributions in slope successions with complicated topography. However, this model implies a constant topographic configuration over the lifespan of a turbidite system. In contrast, the impact on patterns of erosion and deposition above dynamic slopes whose topographic configuration varies spatially over time remains poorly investigated. Here, using high‐resolution 3D seismic reflection data and more than 100 wells from a 40 km long stepped slope system (Campos Basin, offshore Brazil), we document the evolution of a sand‐prone turbidite system active during the Oligocene–Miocene transition. This turbidite system was influenced by vertical and lateral deformation, and we propose a new stratigraphic model to explain the resultant depositional architecture. Two depocentres were identified as steps, with channels on the proximal step, and channel–lobe complexes on the distal step, bounded by sediment bypass‐dominated ramps. Lateral stepping of channels on the proximal step, and oblique stacking of the down‐dip lobe complexes, each cut by through‐going channels, indicate multiple fill‐and‐spill cycles. A persistent north‐east‐ward stepping and thickening on the steps are interpreted to reflect lateral tilting of the seafloor driven by salt tectonics. The dynamic substrate prevented the establishment of a single long‐lived conduit across the proximal step, as recorded in systems with fixed topographic configurations. The filling of through‐going channels with mud at the end of each cycle suggests waxing‐to‐waning sediment supply cycles and periods of sand starvation when the lateral tilting dominated and drove avulsion of the feeder channels towards topographic lows. This study demonstrates that subtle dynamic slope deformation punctuated by discrete sediment supply cycles results in complex stratigraphic patterns with multiple phases, and multiple entry and exit points. The complex topography of submarine canyons may result in different composition of benthic foraminifera assemblages. To understand how trophic, hydrological and sedimentological conditions in submarine canyons can influence the distribution of benthic foraminifera, and to use this information to corroborate paleoenvironmental interpretations for the Holocene, we investigated recent benthic foraminiferal assemblages (total fauna >63 μm) and sedimentological data in two canyons (CANWN and CAND) in the Espírito Santo Basin (ESB) between 18°20′ and 21°20′ S. Surface sediment samples (0–2 cm) were collected inside the canyons (150 to 1300 m water depth) and in shelf-slope adjacent transects (50 to 1300 m water depth). The density, taxonomic diversity, and assemblage composition of benthic foraminifera change with depth and location. The distinct ecological preferences of the most abundant taxa allowed us to recognize five benthic foraminiferal groups. Three groups (V, III, and I) are present in different bathymetric sectors; Group V: outer shelf (50 m), Group III: upper, and middle – lower slope (150 to 400 m), and Group I: middle – lower slope (1000 to 1300 m). Groups II and IV show no characteristic bathymetric distribution and are present only in CAND and in CANWN, respectively. Group V consists of Hanzawaia boueana , Peneroplis planatus , and Quinqueloculina lamarckiana; Group III is dominated by Globocassidulina rossensis and Trifarina spp.; Group I consists of Globocassidulina crassa , Bolivina lowmani , Gavelinopsis versiformis , Alabaminella weddellensis , and Epistominella exigua. The main species in Group II (CAND, 150, 1000 to 1300 m) are Trifarina angulosa , Globocassidulina subglobosa , and Discorbis vilardeboanus. Group IV (middle – lower CANWN, 1000 to 1300 m), consists mainly of agglutinated species Glomospira charoides , Rhabdammina abyssorum , and Psammosphaera fusca. Our data suggest that the quantity (and quality) of food supply, hydrodynamic conditions and sediment properties are the main drivers controlling the bathymetric distribution of benthic foraminiferal assemblages in both canyons. The middle – lower CANNW revealed unstable trophic conditions, related to terrigenous sediment input due to turbidity currents. In CAND, the foraminiferal assemblages ecology indicated sufficient organic matter supply that favors species establishment and diversity, indicating a more productive and less unstable environment than in CANWN. • Environmental factors related to submarine canyons influence the benthic foraminiferal distribution. • CANWN and CAND assemblages are different from the open slope. • The agglutinated assemblage in the middle-lower CANWN may reflects a mass-transport movement. • Benthic foraminiferal species abundance indicated enough organic matter trapped within CAND. In marine sediments, methane hydrate can occur within the methane hydrate stability zone (MHSZ), which extends from the seafloor to a certain depth below it, within which the conditions of pressure and temperature are such that allow their formation and stability. Variations in sea level and in bottom water temperatures (BWTs) have opposite effects on the stability zone: a sea level rise leads to higher hydrostatic pressure, which tends to enlarge the MHSZ, while an increase in temperature tends to shrink it, and vice-versa. When the MHSZ shrinks, methane hydrate dissociates, releasing water and gaseous methane into the sediment pores. If the gaseous methane reaches the seafloor, it will be released into the ocean. In this study, we use numerical modelling to investigate the dynamic response of shallow methane hydrates at 550, 575, 600, 625, 650, 700 and 750 m water depth (mwd), on the Amazon Deep-Sea Fan, Equatorial Atlantic Ocean (near the northern coast of Brazil), to simultaneous sea level and BWTs increases, since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) up to the present. These water depths lie on the feather edge of the MHSZ, where hydrates are most sensitive to pressure and temperature perturbations. The results suggest that the methane hydrate stability decrease caused by the BWTs increases has completely overcome the increase in stability owing to sea level increase, for 550 and 575 mwd. For these two water depths, the MHSZ disappeared in the models and all the hydrate initially present has dissociated. The modelling results indicate that gaseous methane started to be released into the ocean at ca. 17,500 y BP for 550 mwd and at ca. 16,000 y BP for 575 mwd. For the other water depths considered, hydrate stability decrease caused by the BWT increase has only partly overcome the increase in stability due to pressure increase, so that the MHSZs have shrank, but have not totally disappeared in the models. Gaseous methane was released into the ocean from ca. 14,000 y BP to 7000 y BP for 600 mwd. For 625, 650, 700 and 750 mwd, no gaseous methane has been released into the ocean. Methane release amounts and flowrates are maximum limits for each depth, as no methane consumption processes, such as anaerobic oxidation, are modeled in this study. • HIGHLIGHTS (UPDATED): • Dynamic response of methane hydrates to sea level (pressure) and temperature variations since the LGM was investigated. • Stability of hydrates increased due to sea level rise, but the effect was overcome by temperature increase. • Combined changes resulted in continuous gas release into the ocean in shallower depths, starting ca. 17 kyr before present. Deep-sea fans are the terminal sinks of clastic sediment, nutrients and pollutants produced in continental landmasses. They are also major targets for oil and gas on continental margins. Several recent studies have applied seismic geomorphology to delineate deep-sea fans, however, most of them describe a relatively short period of the geologic time, disfavoring the observation of long-term geomorphologic changes and the resulting depositional architecture. We analyzed the geomorphologic evolution and architecture of the Maastrichtian, deeply buried, Maricá deep-sea fan in northern Santos Basin, offshore SE Brazil. Using three-dimensional seismic data and logs from three wells, we mapped five horizons (stratal slices), including fan base, fan top and three internal horizons. The examination of lobes and channel networks on each horizon resulted in a timelapse that capture major geomorphologic transformations of the deep-sea fan from inception to abandonment. The Maricá deep-sea fan is a sand-rich system deposited directly onto the irregular topography of the Maricá mass-transport deposit, and its geometry is also influenced by structural highs uplifted by active halokinesis. Six lobes were mapped, which present variable growing patterns and associated stratigraphic signatures indicative of aggradation, progradation, retrogradation, and lateral switching. Four types of channel morphology were identified (straight, sinuous, meandering, and braided-like). Channel length and sinuosity tend to increase with time in the whole fan and within individual lobes. Amplitude maps and well-log motifs suggest that sandy sediments occur mainly as channel-fill deposits and that different channel morphologies produce contrasting stratigraphic architectures and reservoir heterogeneities. Our results show that channel network and sand-body architecture evolve in a predictive fashion mostly controlled by fan aggradation. However, the interaction with the underlying topography causes morphologic changes at the lobe and depositional element scale that often deviate from the overall trend and affect sand distribution across the fan surface. • The geomorphologic evolution of a deeply buried, Late Cretaceous deep-sea fan is examined from inception to abandonment. • Fan lobes and distributary channels were mapped in multiple horizons, allowing to observe the role of autogenic processes in fan development. • An upward increase in channel sinuosity together with a decrease in fan gradient mimic the geomorphological pattern observed in alluvial systems. • Results show that different channel styles may develop on the same turbidite system as it evolves. • The largest volume of sandy turbidites is preserved as channel-fills instead of sheet-like bodies.
