Recycled wastewater effluent irrigation and implementing limited irrigation rates are two promising strategies for water conservation in agriculture. However, one major challenge is the accumulation and translocation of Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) from recycled water to crops. This study investigated the effects of UV persulfate (UV/PS) treatment of recycled water and limited irrigation rate on PPCPs accumulation and physiological responses of St. Augustine turfgrass via a 14-week field trial. Carbamazepine (CBZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), triclosan (TCS), fluoxetine (FLX) and diclofenac (DCF) were spiked at 0.1-1.5 µg/L into recycled water and two limited irrigation rates corresponding to 60 % and 80 % of reference Evapotranspiration (ET o ) were applied. Results showed that UV/PS removed 60 % of CBZ and > 99 % of other PPCPs from recycled water. Irrigation with UV/PS treated recycled water resulted in approximately a 60 % reduction in CBZ accumulation and complete removal of SMX, DCF, FLX and TCS in both turfgrass leaves and roots. A more limited irrigation rate at 60 % ET o resulted in a higher accumulation of CBZ accumulation compared to 80 % ET o . Similarly, the canopy temperature increased under 60 % ET o irrigation rate compared to 80 % ET o , suggesting that turfgrass under 60 % ET o was more prone to water stress. Applying a 60 % ET o irrigation rate was not sufficient to maintain the turfgrass quality in the acceptable range. A negative correlation between the visual quality and cumulative mass of PPCPs in turfgrass leaves at different irrigation rates was observed, yet irrigation rate was the major driver of turfgrass overall quality and health. Antimony (Sb) and sulfate are two common pollutants in Sb mine drainage and Sb-containing textile wastewater. In this paper, it was found that iron‑carbon (Fe/C) enhanced Sb(V) removal from sulfate-rich wastewater by anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS). Sulfate inhibited Sb(V) removal (S + Sb, k = 0.101), while Fe/C alleviated the inhibition and increased Sb(V) removal rate by 2.3 times (Fe/C + S + Sb, k = 0.236). Fe/C could promote the removal of Sb(III), and Sb(III) content decreased significantly after 8 h. Meanwhile, Fe/C enhanced the removal of sulfate. The 3D-EEM spectrum of supernatant in Fe/C + S + Sb group (at 24 h) showed that Fe/C stimulated the production of soluble microbial products (SMP) in wastewater. SMP alleviated the inhibition of sulfate, promoting AnGS to reduce Sb(V). Sb(V) could be reduced to Sb(III) both by AnGS and sulfides produced from sulfate reduction. Further analysis of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and AnGS showed that Fe/C increased the adsorbed Sb(V) in EPS and the c-type cytochrome content in AnGS, which may be beneficial for Sb(V) removal. Sb(V) reduction in Fe/C + S + Sb group may be related to the genus Acinetobacter, while in Sb group, several bacteria may be involved in Sb(V) reduction, such as Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas and Corynebacterium. Sulfidated zero-valent iron (S-ZVI) is an attractive material of permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) for the remediation of contaminated groundwater. However, S-ZVI is prone to be passivated due to the oxidation of reactive and conductive iron sulfide (FeS x ) shell and the formation of inactive and non-conductive ferric (hydr)oxides, which serve as electron transfer barriers to hinder the electron flow from Fe° core to contaminants. This study thus proposed a novel approach for in-situ reactivation and reuse of micronsized S-ZVI (S-mZVI) in PRB using sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) enriched culture to realize long-lasting remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater. S-mZVI were passivated after reactions with Cr(VI) due to the formation of electron transfer barriers (mainly inactive and non-conductive Fe(III) (hyd)oxides, which increased the polarization resistance from 16.38 to 27.38 kΩ cm 2 and hindered the electron transfer from the Fe° core. Interestingly, the passivated S-mZVI was efficiently reactivated by providing the SRB-enriched culture and organic carbon within 12 h, and the Cr(VI) removal capacity of S-mZVI in the three use cycles increased to 37.4 mg Cr/g, which was 2.1 times higher than that of the virgin S-mZVI. After biological reactivation, the R p of reactivated S-mZVI decreased to 12.30 kΩ cm 2 . SRB-mediated reactivation removed the electron transfer barriers via biotic and abiotic reduction of Fe(III) (hyd)oxides. Especially, the microbial Fe(III) reduction mediated by FmnA-dmkA-fmnB-pplA-ndh2-eetAB-dmkB protein family enhanced the Fe 2+ release from the surface and the subsequent re-formation of reactive and conductive FeS x shell. A long-term PRB column test further demonstrated the feasibility of in-situ biological reactivation and reuse of S-mZVI for enhanced Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater remediation. Within 64 days, the Cr(VI) removal capacity of S-mZVI in the four use cycles increased by 3.2 times, compared to the virgin one. The bio-reactivation using the SRB-enriched culture and sulfate locally-available in groundwater will reduce the chemical and maintenance costs associated with the frequent replacement of reactive ZVI-based materials. Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a common antiepileptic drug. CBZ enters the environment through unreasonable and standardized ways such as human and animal metabolites, discarded drugs, and more than half of its metabolites are released into the environment. Since CBZ is not easy to be degraded, continuous input of CBZ into the water environment will cause long-term impact on the water ecological environment and seriously endanger human health. Aiming at how to degrade wastewater containing carbamazepine, studies were conducted on the degradation of carbamazepine by ultrasound/zero-valent iron/persulfate system (US/ F e 0 /PS). Firstly, the removal effects of carbamazepine by different systems, such as ultrasound/sodium persulfate (US/PS), zero-valent iron/persulfate system ( F e 0 /PS) and US/ F e 0 /PS, were compared; Secondly, the influence of factors, such as ultrasonic power, sodium persulfate dosage, zero-valent iron dosage, reaction temperature, pH, etc., on the reaction was investigated by the control variables method. Results show that ultrasound power, PS concentration, pH and temperature have a great influence on the removal of carbamazepine in US/Fe 0 /PS reaction system. Besides, the optimum parameters for degradation of carbamazepine with US/ F e 0 /PS reaction system were determined ([CBZ] 0  = 0.025 mM; [PS] 0  = 0.4 mM; Fe 0  = 4.0 mg/L; ultrasonic power = 40 W; T = 30 ℃; initial pH = 5.0). Finally, the intermediates and degradation pathways of carbamazepine by US/ F e 0 /PS system were analyzed and speculated. It was inferred that two intermediates were generated during the degradation of carbamazepine, mainly through the ring opening and decyclization of piperazine rings. It was proved that process US/ F e 0 /PS has a very important application value in the degradation of antibiotic-containing wastewater.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), such as hydroxyl radical (HO • )- and sulfate radical (SO 4 •- )-mediated oxidation, are attractive technologies used in water and wastewater treatments. To evaluate the treatment efficiencies of AOPs, monitoring the primary radicals (HO • and SO 4 •- ) as well as the secondary radicals generated from the reaction of HO • /SO 4 •- with water matrices is necessary. Therefore, we developed a novel chemical probe method to examine five key radicals simultaneously, including HO • , SO 4 •- , Cl • , Cl 2 •- , and CO 3 •- . Five probes, including nitrobenzene, para -chlorobenzoic acid, benzoic acid, 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoic acid, and 2,4,6-trimethylphenol, were selected in this study. Their bimolecular reaction rate constants with diverse radicals were first calibrated under the same conditions to minimize systematic errors. Three typical AOPs (UV/H 2 O 2 , UV/S 2 O 8 2- , and UV/HSO 5 - ) were tested to obtain the radical steady-state concentrations. The effects of dissolved organic matter, Br - , and the probe concentration were inspected. Our results suggest that the five-probe method can accurately measure radicals in the HO • - and SO 4 •- -mediated AOPs when the concentration of Br - and DOM are less than 4.0 μM and 15 mg C L -1 , respectively. Overall, the five-probe method is a practical and easily accessible method to determine multiple radicals simultaneously.

In this study, the degradation efficiency and mechanism of carbamazepine (CBZ), a typical emerging contaminant in water, in the UV/sulfite process were investigated. The effects of different concentrations of dissolved oxygen [ ρ (DO)] on the degradation of CBZ by UV-activated sulfite were investigated. Additionally, under a simulated natural water environment-controlled initial ρ (DO) of (8.0 ±0.2) mg·L -1 , the effects of different process parameters (sulfite dosages and reaction pH) and water environmental factors (the presence of HCO 3 - , Cl - , and humic acids) on the degradation of CBZ were comprehensively analyzed. The results showed that the UV/sulfite process efficiently degraded CBZ with a degradation rate of 85.3% during the 30 min reaction time and followed the pseudo-first order kinetic model with the constant of 0.055 7 min -1 . Using the electron spin resonance detection, reactive species quenching tests, and the competition kinetics, the sulfate radicals (SO 4 - ·) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) in the UV/sulfite process were determined to be the main reactive species and were responsible for the degradation of CBZ with contribution rates of 43.9% and 56.1%, respectively. In addition, the degradation efficiency of CBZ decreased with the increasing concentration of HCO 3 - , and the presence of Cl - had little effect on the degradation of CBZ, whereas the presence of humic acids significantly inhibited the degradation of CBZ. Moreover, the accumulation of sulfate during the reaction was significantly lower than the limit of the Standard for Drinking Water (GB5749-2022). Additionally, the sulfite consumption rate constant was 0.004 4 min -1 , which was significantly lower than the degradation rate constant of CBZ, indicating that sulfite could be activated efficiently by UV light to degrade CBZ in water.

Sulfidation enhances the reactivity of zero-valent iron (ZVI) for Cr(VI) removal from groundwater. Current sulfidation methods mainly focus on chemical and mechanical sulfidation, and there has been little research on biosulfidation using sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and its performance in Cr(VI) removal. Herein, the ability of the SRB-biosulfidated ZVI (SRB-ZVI) system was evaluated and compared with that of the Na 2 S-sulfidated ZVI system. The SRB-ZVI system forms a thicker and more porous FeS x layer than the Na 2 S-sulfidated ZVI system, resulting in more sufficient sulfidation of ZVI and a 2.5-times higher Cr(VI) removal rate than that of the Na 2 S-sulfidated ZVI system. The biosulfidated-ZVI granules and FeS x suspension are the major components of the SRB-ZVI system. The SRB-ZVI system exhibits a long-lasting (11 cycles) Cr(VI) removal performance owing to the regeneration of FeS x . However, the Na 2 S-sulfidated ZVI system can perform only two Cr(VI) removal cycles. SRB attached to biosulfidated-ZVI can survive in the presence of Cr(VI) because of the protection of the biogenic porous structure, whereas SRB in the suspension is inhibited. After Cr(VI) removal, SRB repopulates in the suspension from biosulfidated-ZVI and produce FeS x , thus providing conditions for subsequent Cr(VI) removal cycles. Overall, the synergistic effect of SRB and ZVI provides a more powerful and environmentally friendly sulfidation method, which has more advantageous for Cr(VI) removal than those of chemical sulfidation. Landfills are essential facilities for treating and disposing municipal solid waste. They emit sulfur-containing odors and serve as an important sink for a new type of pollutant called microplastics (MPs). This study focused on the initial stage of anaerobic degradation to establish the relationship between the release of MPs and odor generation. Our findings show the rapid release of MPs into the leachate in the early stage of landfill and their predominant accumulation in the leachate sediment. The circulating leachate contained 1.45 times higher concentrations of MPs than the noncirculating leachate, with a peak concentration of 39 items·L -1 . In addition, fragmentation of MPs occurred. The percentage of MPs with particle sizes of 2.5-5 mm decreased from 66.70 % to 22.32 %, while those measuring 0.1-0.5 mm increased by 33.12 %. A positive correlation was observed between MP release and sulfate reduction. Although leachate circulation increased the release of MPs, it also reduced the overall release time and total amount of MPs exported from the landfill. Compared with the initial landfill waste, the leachate operation mode, regardless of circulation, resulted in a 6.15-8.93-fold increase in MP release. The existence of the artificial sweetener acesulfame (ACE) in quantities of significance can negatively impact water quality, and its consumption has been associated with deleterious health effects. The present investigation explores the efficacy of heat-activated sodium persulfate (SPS) for eliminating ACE. The complete degradation of 0.50 mg L -1 of ACE was achieved within 45 min under a reaction temperature of 50 °C and 100 mg L -1 of SPS. The impact of thermal decomposition on ACE at a temperature of 60 °C was negligible. This study considers several factors, such as the SPS and ACE loading, the reaction temperature, the initial pH, and the water matrix of the reactor. The results indicate that the method's efficiency is positively correlated with higher initial concentrations of SPS, whereas it is inversely associated with the initial concentration of ACE. Furthermore, higher reaction temperatures and acidic initial pH levels promote the degradation of acesulfame. At the same time, certain constituents of the water matrix, such as humic acid, chlorides, and bicarbonates, can hinder the degradation process. Additionally, the data from LC-QToF-MS analysis of the samples were used to investigate transformation through suspect and non-target screening approaches. Overall, ACE's eight transformation products (TPs) were detected, and a potential ACE decomposition pathway was proposed. The concentration of TPs followed a volcano curve, decreasing in long treatment times. The ecotoxicity of ACE and its identified TPs was predicted using the ECOSAR software. A new magnetic nanoparticle modified with sodium tungstate (Mnp-Si-W) was synthesized and employed for the sorption of molybdenum from aqueous solutions. The prepared nanoparticles (Mnp-Si-W) were characterized by different advanced techniques. Different parameters that influenced the adsorption percent of Mo(VI) were investigated using a batch process. Based on a systematic investigation of the adsorption isotherms and kinetics models, Mo(VI) adsorption follows the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetics. According to the Langmuir isotherm model, the Mnp-Si-W nanoparticles exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 182.03 mg g -1 for Mo(VI) at pH 2.0. The effect of competing ions showed that the prepared nanoparticles have a high selectivity for the sorption of molybdenum. Moreover, the effect of some interfering anions on Mo(VI) ion sorption is found in the following order: phosphate < sulfate < chromate. Adsorption-based treatment of sulfate contaminated water sources present challenges due to its favourable hydration characteristics. Herein, a copper-modified granular chitosan-based biocomposite (CHP-Cu) was prepared and characterized for its sulfate adsorption properties at neutral pH via batch equilibrium and fixed-bed column studies. The CHP-Cu adsorbent was characterized by complementary methods: spectroscopy (IR, Raman, X-ray photoelectron), thermal gravimetry analysis (TGA) and pH-based surface charge analysis. Sulfate adsorption at pH 7.2 with CHP-Cu follows the Sips isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity (407 mg/g) that exceeds most reported values of granular biosorbents at similar conditions. For the dynamic adsorption study, initial sulfate concentration, bed height, and flow rate were influential parameters governing sulfate adsorption. The Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models yield a sulfate adsorption capacity (146 mg/g) for the fixed bed system at optimized conditions. CHP-Cu was regenerated over 5 cycles (33 % to 31 %) with negligible Cu-leaching. The adsorbent also displays excellent sulfate uptake properties, regenerability, and sustainable adsorbent properties for effective point-of-use sulfate remediation in aqueous media near neutral pH (7.2). Geogenic arsenic (As)-contaminated groundwater is a sustaining global health concern that is tightly constrained by multiple interrelated biogeochemical processes. However, a complete spectrum of the biogeochemical network of high-As groundwater remains to be established, concurrently neglecting systematic zonation of groundwater biogeochemistry on the regional scale. We uncovered the geomicrobial interaction network governing As biogeochemical pathways by merging in-field hydrogeochemical monitoring, metagenomic analyses, and ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) characterization of dissolved organic matter. In oxidizing to weakly reducing environments, the nitrate-reduction and sulfate-reduction encoding genes (narGHI, sat) inhibited the dissolution of As-bearing iron minerals, leading to lower As levels in groundwater. In settings from weakly to moderately reducing, high abundances of sulfate-reduction and iron-transport encoding genes boosted iron mineral dissolution and consequent As release. As it evolved to strongly reducing stage, elevated abundance of methane cycle-related genes (fae, fwd, fmd) further enhanced As mobilization in part by triggering the formation of gaseous methylarsenic. During redox cycling of N, S, Fe, C and As in groundwater, As migration to groundwater and immobilization in mineral particles are geochemically constrained by basin-scale dynamics of microbial functionality and DOM molecular composition. As a widely used feed additives, p-arsanilic acid (p-AsA) frequently detected in the environment poses serious threats to aquatic ecology and water security due to its potential in releasing more toxic inorganic arsenic. In this work, the efficiency of Fe(II)/sulfite, Fe(II)/PDS and Fe(II)/PMS systems in p-AsA degradation and simultaneous arsenic removal was comparatively investigated for the first time. Efficient p-AsA abatement was achieved in theses Fe-based systems, while notable discrepancy in total arsenic removal was observed under identical acidic condition. By using chemical probing method, quenching experiments, isotopically labeled water experiments, p-AsA degradation was ascribed to the combined contribution of high-valent Fe(IV) and SO 4 •- in these Fe(II)-based system. In particular, the relative contribution of Fe(IV) and SO 4 •- in the Fe(II)/sulfite system was highly dependent on the molar ratio of [Fe(II)] and [sulfite]. Negligible arsenic removal was observed in the Fe(II)/sulfite and Fe(II)/PDS systems, while ∼80% arsenic was removed in the Fe(II)/PMS system under identical acidic condition. This interesting phenomenon was due to that ferric precipitation only occurred in the Fe(II)/PMS system. As(V) was further removed via adsorption onto the iron precipitate or the formation of ferric arsenate-sulfate compounds, which was confirmed by particle diameter measurements, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Through tuning solution pH, complete removal of total arsenic could achieve in all three systems. Among these three Fe-based technologies, the hybrid oxidation-coagulation Fe(II)/PMS system demonstrated potential superiority for arsenic immobilization by not requiring pH adjustment for coagulation and facilitating the in-situ generation of ferric arsenate-sulfate compounds with comparably low solubility levels like scorodite. Methylene blue (MB), a common dye in the textile industry, has a multitude of detrimental consequences on humans and the environment. Accordingly, it is necessary to remove dyes from water to guarantee our health and sustainable ecosystem. In this study, we developed polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based hydrogel adsorbents with high adsorption capacity by adding three types of carrageenan (kappa, iota, and lambda) to remove MB from water. Thanks to the functional groups, the PVA/carrageenan membranes dramatically increased the removal efficiency (kappa, 98.8%; iota, 97.0%; lambda, 95.4%) compared to the pure PVA membrane (6.3%). Among the three types of PVA/carrageenan membranes, the PVA/kappa-carrageenan membrane exhibited the best adsorption capacity of 147.8 mg/g. This result implies that steric hindrance was considerably significant, given that kappa carrageenan has only one sulfate group in the repeating unit, whereas iota and lambda carrageenan composite PVA membranes possess two and three sulfate groups. Apart from the maximum adsorption capacity, this study addressed a variety of characteristics of PVA/carrageenan membranes such as the effects of initial MB concentration, kappa carrageenan weight percentage, contact time, adsorbent dosage, and temperature on the adsorption performance. In addition, the kinetic and thermodynamic studies were also carried out. Orthophosphate (P i ) remediation from effluent serves to address global water security by preventing eutrophication. Herein, chitosan (C), alginate (Alg) and three respective metal systems (Fe 3+ , Al 3+ , Cu 2+ ) were used to prepare binary (BMC) or ternary (TMC) metal composite adsorbents. Their physicochemical properties were analyzed through XPS, IR and TGA, while the adsorption properties of the composites were characterized via adsorption isotherms and single-point experiments in saline environmental water. Al-composites formed Al-O complexes, while Fe- and Cu-composites formed in the presence of the biopolymer backbone FeO(OH) and Cu 2 (OH) 3 NO 3 , respectively. While Al-composites showed the highest bound water fraction (up to 16%), the Cu-composites (Cu-TMC-N, CuC-BMC-N; where N = nitrate) revealed the lowest water content. Alginate-based binary composites showed slightly higher water content, as compared to ternary and binary chitosan composites. Among the four materials (Al-TMC-N, Fe-TMC-N, Cu-TMC-N and CuC-BMC-N), the Al-TMC showed the highest P i selectivity over sulfate, along with high P i removal-% even in a binary mixture (sulfate + orthophosphate) despite the presence of competitive anion species. Upon spiking saline groundwater samples with low P i (5 mg/L) that contains 2060 or 6030 mg/g sulfate, Al-TMC-N showed the highest P i selectivity, followed by Fe-TMC-N. This trend in adsorption of Pi among the various composites is understood based on the HSAB principle for the conditions employed in this study. Removal efficiencies of P i above 60% in Well 1 (ca. 2000 mg/L sulfate) and above 30% in Well 3 (ca. 6030 mg/L sulfate). Activated carbon enriched with high concentrations of gentamicin (ACG) was generated in the production process of gentamicin. Inappropriate handling methods for ACG not only squanders carbon resource, but also seriously hinders achieving global carbon neutrality and hazardous to human health. In the present work, thermal and carbon co-activated persulfate method (TC-PS) was developed to regenerate ACG with degrading gentamicin. The results showed that ACG was effectively regenerated by TC-PS, restoring the adsorption performance for gentamicin. When the treatment temperature was 80 °C, the persulfate dosage was 20 mM and the initial pH was 3.0, the degradation efficiency of gentamicin reached 100%. The HO • and SO 4 •- were the major reactive species for gentamicin degradation. In present study, eco-friendly sulfated cellulose-magnetic biocomposite was successfully synthesized with a simple method from hemp biomass. ATR-FTIR was used to determine chemical changes, while FE-SEM-EDS, STEM, XRD, TG/DTA, and BET techniques were employed to identify changes in morphology, elemental composition, crystal structure, and thermal degradation. Moreover, the saturation magnetization and pHpzc values of the MSHB were also determined. The effectiveness of magnetic sulfated hemp biomass (MSHB) was tested in the removal of cationic dyes from wastewater, including methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV), and malachite green oxalate (MGO). The adsorption all three dyes to MSHB, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model were determined to be more appropriate, and was endothermic and spontaneous from thermodynamic parameters, too. The maximum MSHB adsorption capacities were found to be 457.6, 509.3, and 1300 mg/g for MB, CV, and MGO at 298 K. With increasing temperature, it also drastically increased in capacity. The outstanding property of the MSHB is that it shows high removal performance wide pH range, even after ten cycles its high removal efficiency is still over 96 % for all three dyes and almost unaffected from dense matrix medium. Although 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS) is a common ingredient in aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) formulations, its environmental fate at AFFF-impacted sites remains poorly understood. This study investigated the biotransformation of 6:2 FTS in microcosms prepared with soils collected from two AFFF-impacted sites; the former Loring Air Force Base (AFB) and Robins AFB. The half-life of 6:2 FTS in Loring soil was 43.3 days; while >60 mol% of initially spiked 6:2 FTS remained in Robins soil microcosms after a 224-day incubation. Differences in initial sulfate concentrations and the depletion of sulfate over the incubation likely contributed to the different 6:2 FTS biotransformation rates between the two soils. At day 224, stable transformation products, i.e., C 4 C 7 perfluoroalkyl carboxylates, were formed with combined molar yields of 13.8 mol% and 1.2 mol% in Loring and Robins soils, respectively. Based on all detected transformation products, the biotransformation pathways of 6:2 FTS in the two soils were proposed. Microbial community analysis suggests that Desulfobacterota microorganisms may promote 6:2 FTS biotransformation via more efficient desulfonation. In addition, species from the genus Sphingomonas, which exhibited higher tolerance to elevated concentrations of 6:2 FTS and its biotransformation products, are likely to have contributed to 6:2 FTS biotransformation. Persulfate (PS) activation technologies were of significant importance to the organic contaminant treatment. In this study, ascorbic acid (AA) was introduced to the traditional PS-activated process by using magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) as the activator; herein, the degradation efficiency of sulfadimidine (SM2) was improved from 30 to 93% within 3 h, and the observed removal rate was about 8.0 times higher than that of the Fe 3 O 4 /PS system. These improvements were found to be induced by the added AA because it could reduce the surface Fe(III) to Fe(II) on Fe 3 O 4 and thus facilitate the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle, which was conducive to producing reactive oxygen species (ROSs) in the oxidation process during PS activation. Meanwhile, AA could also promote the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle in the homogeneous solution, further advancing the PS decomposition for SM2 degradation. The ROS trapping experiments indicated that SM2 removal in the Fe 3 O 4 /PS/AA system was attributed to •OH and •SO 4 - , and •SO 4 - was the dominant ROS. Moreover, the reusability test experiment revealed that magnetite retained good activity after five cycles in the Fe 3 O 4 /AA/PS system. Sulfate radical-based oxidation processes were investigated to understand the relationship between persulfate (PS) consumption and total organic carbon (TOC) removal from industrial wastewater under various PS concentrations. First, the degradation and mineralization of Bisphenol A (BPA) (initial concentration: 11 mg/L) were investigated in ultraviolet (UV)/PS systems. Complete degradation was achieved within 30 min of UV irradiation, and 41%-72% TOC removal was achieved at PS concentrations of 200 and 400 mg/L. The consumed concentration of S 2 O 8 2- and generated concentration of SO 4 2- increased gradually to similar levels. The ratio of the PS consumption to TOC removal based on the mass concentration (mg/L) was 14.5 and 23.2 at 180 min for 200 and 400 mg/L of S 2 O 8 2- , respectively. Three types of coagulation-treated industrial wastewater from metal-processing, food-processing, and adhesive-producing plants were obtained, and TOC removal was analyzed using the same UV/PS systems (initial TOC concentration: 100 mg/L). The TOC removal rates ranged from 16.9% to 94.4% after 180 min of UV irradiation at PS concentrations of 1,000, 2,000, 4,000, and 8,000 mg S 2 O 8 2- /L. Despite the higher TOC removal at higher PS concentrations, the PS activation efficiency decreased significantly as the PS concentration increased. Only approximately 30%-40% activation efficiency was achieved at a PS concentration of 8,000 mg/L. Sediments in aquatic systems often act as a major sink for contaminants. Diffusive gradient in thin films (DGTs) and in situ equilibrium dialysis samplers (peepers) are two major in situ pore water sampling devices that overcome the problems associated with conventional pore water sampling methods. In the present study, DGTs and peepers were used to study the spatial and seasonal effects (cool months, October-February; warm months, May-September) on metal bioavailability in the H-02 constructed wetland and the sink versus source role of the sediments by calculating the metal resupply capacity. Data showed similar seasonal trends in metal concentrations using passive samplers, peepers, and DGTs. Pooled Cu and Zn concentrations measured using DGTs were lower in warm months (1.67 ± 1.50 and 2.62 ± 0.68 μg L -1 , respectively, p < 0.001) versus in cool months (2.12 ± 0.65 and 5.58 ± 1.33 μg L -1 , respectively, p < 0.001; mean ± 95% confidence interval). Sulfate (SO 4 2- ) concentrations were significantly (p = 0.0139) lower in warm months (averaged at 0.22 ± 0.05 mg L -1 ) compared to in cool months (0.16 ± 0.05 mg L -1 ). The increase in SO 4 2- concentration is an indicator of the lower activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria, which need SO 4 2- during anaerobic respiration, in which SO 4 2- is reduced to sulfide (S 2- ) that forms insoluble salts with Cu and Zn, which could partially explain the higher bioavailability of these metals in the cool season. Metal resupply capacity of the sediments was mostly <0.2 for Cu and Zn. Taken together, the H0-2 wetland sediments mostly acted as a sink to both Cu and Zn over the course of the present study. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely used anthropogenic chemicals. Because of the strength of the carbon-fluorine bond, PFAS are not destroyed in typical water treatment processes. Sulfate (SO 4 •- ) and hydroxyl ( • OH) radicals can oxidize some PFAS, but the behavior of per- and polyfluoroalkyl ether acids (PFEAs) in processes involving SO 4 •- and • OH is poorly understood. In this study, we determined second-order rate constants ( k ) describing the oxidation of 18 PFAS, including 15 novel PFEAs, by SO 4 •- and • OH. Among the studied PFAS, 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate reacted most readily with • OH [ k •OH = (1.1-1.2) × 10 7 M -1 s -1 ], while polyfluoroalkyl ether acids containing an -O-CFH- moiety reacted more slowly [ k •OH = (0.5-1.0) × 10 6 M -1 s -1 ]. In the presence of SO 4 •- , polyfluoroalkyl ether acids with an -O-CFH- moiety reacted more rapidly [ k SO4 •- = (0.89-4.6) × 10 6 M -1 s -1 ] than perfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic acids (PFECAs) and a chloro-perfluoro-polyether carboxylic acid (ClPFPECA) [ k SO4 •- = (0.85-9.5) × 10 4 M -1 s -1 ]. For homologous series of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids, linear and branched monoether PFECAs, and multiether PFECAs, PFAS chain length had little impact on second-order rate constants. SO 4 •- reacted with the carboxylic acid headgroup of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids and PFECAs. In contrast, for polyfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic and sulfonic acids with an -O-CFH- moiety, the site of SO 4 •- attack was the -O-CFH- moiety. Perfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acids were not oxidized by SO 4 •- and • OH under the conditions evaluated in this study.

Mining activities have long-term impacts on the groundwater of surrounding areas and deserve in-depth analysis and study. Herein, the geochemical mechanisms of acid mine drainage (AMD)-affected groundwaters were examined, and groundwater quality was assessed through water quality indices. 15 water samples from 7 domestic and 4 groundwater monitoring wells were tested for physical and chemical parameters in 2022, and multivariate statistical analysis was carried out with monitoring data from 21 domestic wells in 2010. The groundwater chemical composition varied from a predominantly Ca-HCO 3 type in 2010 to a Ca-SO 4 type in 2022. The isotopic values of δ 18 O and δD indicate that groundwater has not been significantly affected by evaporation. Changes in groundwater sulfate and total dissolved solids (TDS) levels over the twelve-year period confirmed the AMD infiltration impact on groundwater quality. The groundwater chemical properties changed more slowly than those of surface waters affected by AMD based on a cumulative increase in sulfate concentration of 29.94 mg/L. Changes in groundwater quality were investigated, namely, the spatiotemporal distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), including Fe, Mn, Cd, Pb, and As. Mn concentrations in upstream groundwater areas near the mine decreased by 61.8% between 2010 and 2022. Conversely, groundwater in midstream areas had Mn concentrations of 2.25 mg/L and arsenic concentrations of 11.8 μg/L, both exceeding the WHO, 2022 standard. According to multivariate statistical analysis, Mn, Cd, and Pb originated from polymetallic minerals, whereas As was likely derived from the reduction of Fe/Mn hydroxyl oxides. AMD remediation improved contaminated upstream groundwater quality over 12 years, with a 36.8% improvement in WQI values. Although alkaline sulfite activation of ferrate (Fe(VI)) has advantages of fast response and high activity for degradation of organic contaminants, the specific production pathways of active species and the pH conditions still hinder its widespread application. Based on this, our study constructed a novel advanced oxidation process of calcium sulfite (CaSO 3 ) could activated Fe(VI) continuously by Ca 2+ buffering and investigated the mechanism under different pH values and CaSO 3 dosages with ciprofloxacin as a target organic pollutant. The results showed that Ca 2+ stabilized the process at a neutral/weakly alkaline microenvironment of pH 7-8, which could alleviate the hydrolysis of ≡Fe IV =O by protons and iron hydroxyl groups. Besides, the removal of pollutants occurred efficiently when sulfate (SO 3 2- ) was excessive and had a 3:1 ratio of SO 3 2- to Fe(VI), achieving more than 99% removal of electron-rich phenolic organic pollutants within 2 min. By adding different radical scavengers and combining electrochemical analysis methods and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy techniques to revealed that the main active species in Fe(VI)/CaSO 3 process were ≡Fe IV =O/≡Fe V =O. Furthermore, the reactivity of various sulfate species (such as SO 3 2- , SO 3 •- , SO 4 •- , SO 5 •- ) with Fe(VI) was calculated using density functional theory (DFT), and it was found that Fe(VI)-SO 3 2- reaction has a much lower energy barrier (-36.08 kcal/mol), indicating that SO 3 2- can readily activate Fe(VI) and generate ≡Fe IV =O to attack the atoms with high Fukui index (f - ) in organic pollutants. The above results confirm the feasibility of Fe(VI)/CaSO 3 process. Deep reservoirs vary in their hydrostatic pressure owing to artificial water level control. The potential migration of phosphorus (P) in reservoir sediments raises the risk of harmful algal blooms. To ascertain the mechanisms of endogenous P release in reservoirs, we characterised aquatic microbial communities associated with coupled iron (Fe), P and sulphur (S) cycling at the sediment-water interface. The responses of microbial communities to hydrostatic pressures of 0.2-0.7 mega pascals (MPa; that is, micro-pressures) were investigated through a 30-day simulation experiment. Our findings unravelled a potential mechanism that micro-pressure enhanced the solubilisation of Fe/aluminium (Al)-bound P caused by microbially-driven sulphate reduction, leading to endogenous P release in the deep reservoir. Although the vertical distribution of labile Fe was not affected by pressure changes, we did observe Fe resupply at sediment depths of 2-5 cm. Metagenomic analysis revealed increased abundances of functional genes for P mineralisation (phoD, phoA), P solubilisation (pqqC, ppx-gppA) and sulphate reduction (cysD, cysC) in sediments subjected to micro-pressure, which contrasted with the pattern of S oxidation gene (soxB). There was a tight connection between P and S cycling-related microbial communities, based on significant positive correlations between labile element (P and S) concentrations and functional gene (phoD, cysD) abundances. This provided strong support that Fe-P-S coupling processes were governed by micro-pressure through modulation of P and S cycling-related microbial functions. Sulfate (SO 4 2- ) is a major water and environmental concern that causes severe diarrhea, death of invertebrates and plant species, and clogging of industrial pipes. In the current work, treatment of SO 4 2- from synthetic and real groundwater having 3901 mg(SO 4 2- )/L was investigated for the first time using Zn-Al and Mg-Al layered double oxides doped granular activated carbon (GAC/Mg-Al LDO and GAC/Zn-Al LDO). The co-precipitation method was followed to synthesize the GAC/LDO composites using an Mg or Zn to Al molar ratio of 3:1. The GAC/Mg-Al LDO possessed a higher specific surface area (323.9 m 2 /g) compared to GAC/Zn-Al LDO (195.1 m 2 /g). The GAC/Mg-Al LDO demonstrated more than 99% removal of SO 4 2- from synthetic water, while it was 50.9% for GAC/Zn-Al LDO and less than 1% for raw GAC at an initial concentration of 50 mg/L. The GAC/Mg-Al LDO was selected for further batch experiments and modeling investigation. The equilibrium data followed the Redlich-Peterson and Langmuir models with determination coefficients of 0.943 and 0.935, respectively. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity was 143.5 mg/g. In the real groundwater adsorption study, the screening experiment revealed high selectivity towards SO 4 2- with 62% removal efficiency. The optimum dosage was found to be 50 g/L with an uptake capacity of 61.5 mg/g. The kinetic data of SO 4 2- removal from synthetic and brackish water were in excellent agreement with the pseudo-second order model, and the equilibrium was attained in 5 h. Sulfate radical (SO 4 •- )-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have become promising alternatives in environmental remediation due to the higher redox potential (2.6-3.1 V) and longer half-life period (30-40 μs) of sulfate radicals compared with many other radicals such as hydroxyl radicals (•OH). The generation and mechanisms of SO 4 •- and the applications of SO 4 •- -AOPs have been examined extensively, while those using sulfite as activation precursor and their comparisons among various activation precursors have rarely reviewed comprehensively. In this article, the latest progresses in SO 4 •- -AOPs were comprehensively reviewed and commented on. First of all, the generation of SO 4 •- was summarized via the two activation methods using various oxidant precursors, and the generation mechanisms were also presented, which provides a reference for guiding researchers to better select two precursors. Secondly, the reaction mechanisms of SO 4 •- were reviewed for organic pollutant degradation, and the reactivity was systematically compared between SO 4 •- and •OH. Thirdly, methods for SO 4 •- detection were reviewed which include quantitative and qualitative ones, over which current controversies were discussed. Fourthly, the applications of SO 4 •- -AOPs in various environmental remediation were summarized, and the advantages, challenges, and prospects were also commented. At last, future research needs for SO 4 •- -AOPs were also proposed consequently. Advanced oxidation processes are commonly considered one of the most effective techniques to degrade refractory organic pollutants, but the limitation of a single process usually makes it insufficient to achieve the desired treatment. This work introduces, for the first time, a highly-efficient coupled advanced oxidation process, namely Electro-Oxidation-Persulfate-Electro-Fenton (EO-PS-EF). Leveraging the EO-PS-EF tri-coupling system, diverse contaminants can be highly efficiently removed with the help of reactive hydroxyl and sulfate radicals generated via homogeneous and heterogeneous bi-catalysis, as certified by radical quenching and electron spin resonance. Concerning degradation of tetracycline (TC), the EO-PS-EF system witnessed a fast pseudo-first-order reaction kinetic constant of 2.54 × 10 -3 s -1 , ten times that of a single EO system and three-to-four times that of a binary system (EO-PS or EO-EF). In addition, critical parameters (e.g., electrolyte, pH and temperature) are systematically investigated. Surprisingly, after 100 repetitive trials TC removal can still reach 100% within 30 min and no apparent morphological changes to electrode materials were observed, demonstrating its long-term stability. In sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs), high-efficiency and perdurable materials have drawn considerable interest for use as cathodes, which can effectively degrade refractory organic contaminants through the synergistic electro-activation and transition metal activation of persulfate (PS). Here, the FeCuO@C modified composite cathode (FeCuO@C/AGF) was synthesized via the solvothermal and thermal treatment method based on the CuFe-MOF-74 structure, and the electro-activation PS process (EC/FeCuO@C/AGF/PS) was developed to effectively remove atrazine (ATZ). The surface morphology, electrochemical characteristics, chemical composition, crystal structure, and electrode surface wettability of FeCuO@C/AGF were investigated. It was found that the proposed EC/FeCuO@C/AGF/PS process can successfully remove 100% of ATZ in 20 min at a low current density (2 mA cm -2 ) and a low PS concentration (0.4 mM), and PS is successfully activated by combining the electrical and transition metal synergistic activation. The FeCuO@C/AGF cathode exhibits outstanding catalytic functionality over a broad pH range (2-9) and remains stable over five successive cycles. Additionally, the active species involved in the reaction as well as the potential ATZ degradation reaction mechanisms and pathways are discussed. Electrochemical oxidation is a process in which both radicals (SO 4 ·- , ·OH, and O 2 ·- ) and non-radical ( 1 O 2 ) participate in the degradation of ATZ. The intermediates of the ATZ degradation process were studied upon the toxicity changing, and the toxicity of the intermediates was found to be reduced during degradation. Arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) from mining sites can seep into aquatic ecosystems by acid mine drainage (AMD). Here, the possibility of concomitantly removing As and Sb from acidic waters by precipitation of sulfides induced by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) was investigated in a fixed-bed column bioreactor. The real AMD water used to feed the bioreactor contained nearly 1 mM As, while the Sb concentrations were increased (0.008 ± 0.006 to 1.01 ± 0.07 mM) to obtain an Sb/As molar ratio = 1. Results showed that the addition of Sb did not affect the efficiency of As bio-precipitation. Sb was removed efficiently (up to 97.9% removal) between the inlet and outlet of the bioreactor, together with As (up to 99.3% removal) in all conditions. Sb was generally removed as it entered the bioreactor. Appreciable sulfate reduction occurred in the bioreactor, which could have been linked to the stable presence of a major SRB operational taxonomic unit affiliated with the Desulfosporosinus genus. The bacterial community included polymer degraders, fermenters, and acetate degraders. The growing concern for the environment has resulted in renewed interest in bio-based resources. This study aims to produce a hydrogel adsorbent from cellulose and examine its adsorption performance. In pursuit of this goal, we report a simple one-pot synthesis of cellulose acetate sulfate (CAS), followed by the formation of CAS hydrogels and their subsequent adsorption performances. The CAS includes both hydrophilic and hydrophobic functional groups, enable the formation of a single-component hydrogel through intermolecular interactions in deionized water. The thermal reversibility of CAS hydrogels makes them easily processable into various shapes. The durability of the CAS hydrogel adsorbents can be improved by introducing divalent cations (e.g., Ca 2+ ), which create ionically crosslinked hydrogels. The ionically a crosslinked CAS hydrogel adsorbent exhibits a maximum adsorption capacity of 245 mg/g for methylene blue (MB) at 23 °C and a pH of 7. The adsorption behavior of MB on the CAS hydrogel follows both the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Furthermore, the CAS hydrogel adsorbent maintains a 70 % removal ratio after five cycles. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), one of the main categories of emerging contaminants, are a family of fluorinated organic compounds of anthropogenic origin. PFAS can endanger the environment and human health because of their wide application in industries, long-term persistence, unique properties, and bioaccumulation potential. This study sought to explain the accumulation of different PFAS in water bodies. In aquatic environments, PFAS concentrations range extensively from <0.03 (groundwater; Melbourne, Australia) to 51,000 ng/L (Groundwater, Sweden). Additionally, bioaccumulation of PFAS in fish and water biota has been stated to range from 0.2 (Burbot, Lake Vättern, Sweden) to 13,900 ng/g (Bluegill samples, U.S.). Recently, studies have focused on PFAS removal from aqueous solutions; one promising technique is advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), including microwaves, ultrasound, ozonation, photocatalysis, UV, electrochemical oxidation, the Fenton process, and hydrogen peroxide-based and sulfate radical-based systems. The removal efficiency of PFAS ranges from 3% (for MW) to 100% for UV/sulfate radical as a hybrid reactor. Therefore, a hybrid reactor can be used to efficiently degrade and remove PFAS. Current techniques for identifying and quantifying sulfate radicals (SO 4 · - ) in SO 4 · - -based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) are unsatisfactory due to their low selectivity, poor reliability, and limited feasibility for real-time quantification. In this study, naproxen (NAP) was employed as a turn-on luminescent probe for real-time quantification of SO 4 · - in SR-AOPs. The chemiluminescence(CL) yield (Φ CL ) of the reaction of NAP with SO 4 · - was first determined to be 1.49 × 10 -5 E mol -1 with the bisulfite activation by cerium(IV) [Ce(IV)/BS] process. Then, the maximum peak concentrations of SO 4 · - in the Ce(IV)/BS-NAP process was quantified to be ∼10 -11 M based on the derived equation. Since Φ CL of the reaction of NAP with SO 4 · - was much greater than that with other reactive oxidizing species (ROS), the developed CL method worked well in selective quantification of SO 4 · - in various SR-AOPs (e.g., the activation of peroxymonosulfate and persulfate by iron processes). Finally, the electron transfer from NAP to SO 4 · - was proposed to be the critical step for CL production. This work provides a novel CL method for real-time quantification of SO 4 · - , which facilitates the development of SR-AOPs and their application in water and wastewater treatment.

Seawater was investigated as an alternative regenerant source to conventional salt-imported brine solutions in an anion exchange process treating surficial Florida coastal groundwater for the removal of sulfate and organics. Bench-scale column testing revealed that filtered Sarasota Bay seawater efficiently regenerated the anion resin media; however, sulfate exchange capacity decreased by 8.42% compared with conventional 10% salt regeneration methods. Addition of 3% sodium chloride increased regeneration efficiency, reduced exchange capacity losses to 2.4% as compared to conventional 10% salt regeneration methods. Regeneration resulted in 2.13 mg/L of bromide leakage; however, addition of 3% sodium chloride to seawater reduced bromide leakage to 1.25 mg/L. A correlation between bromide exchange and the regenerant chloride-to-bromide molar ratio (CBMR) was observed, yielding less bromide exchange at higher CBMRs. Bromide adsorption followed pseudo 2nd order kinetics and chemisorption was the rate controlling step. Increasing the CBMR of the regenerant was found to shift adsorption behaviour, allowing intra-particle diffusion to occur sooner. Bromide equilibrium appeared to follow a logarithmic decay as the CBMR of the regenerant increased. Intra-particle and film diffusion mechanisms were evaluated that indicated the presence of diffusion-based processes and more than one rate controlling step. An empirical function was derived to approximate bromide equilibrium adsorption in relation to a regenerant's CBMR. Seawater as a regenerant when enhanced with sodium chloride shows promise as an anion exchange regenerant; additionally, classification of a seawater regenerant's CBMR can provide insight into the kinetic and equilibrium relationships of bromide exchange.

Arsenic (As) is extremely harmful to the ecological environment and human health owing to its high toxicity. The composite that biochar (BC) modified by Schwertmannite (Sch), marked as Sch@BC, were prepared to remediate As-contaminated water and soil with a high efficiency. The characterization results showed that the Sch particles were successfully loaded on the BC, providing more active sites for As(V) adsorption. Compared with the pristine BC, the adsorption capacity of Sch@BC-1 was significantly improved (50.00 mg/g), of which the adsorption capacity kept stable over a wide pH range (pH = 2-8). The adsorption process conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model, which indicated that chemical adsorption was the dominant mechanism and the adsorption rate was controlled by intraparticle diffusion. Sch@BC could adsorb As(V) through electrostatic interaction and ion exchange, forming a FeAsO 4 complex and removing As(V). The 5-week soil incubation experiment showed that 3% Sch@BC showed the optimal stabilization effect, while the proportion of stable crystalline Fe/Mn-bound fractionation (F4) increased. Moreover, the results of microbial community diversity showed that Sch@BC interacted with As-resistant dominant microorganisms such as Proteobacteria in soil, promoted their growth and reproduction, and improved the stability of As in soil. Iron hydroxides have received high attention in the treatment of chromium (Cr) polluted wastewater. In this study, the obtained chemical (or biological) pincushion-schwertmannite spheres had a diameter of 2 - 5 μm (0.5-1 μm), and akaganéite rods had a length of 300-500 nm (100-150 nm) at an axial ratio of about 3. The average diameters (μm) of their agglomerated particles in solutions were 20.6-32.5 (only 0.480 for Aka-Chem). Schwertmannites and akaganéites were used to investigate Cr(VI) adsorption behaviors in aqueous solutions by batch experiments, under various reaction times, initial Cr(VI) and adsorbent levels, pH values, temperature and anions of NO 3 - , Cl - , CO 3 2- , SO 4 2- , and H 2 PO 4 - . Adsorption data well fitted to pseudo-second-order rate model (R 2  = 0.999), and Langmuir (R 2  = 0.954-0.988) and Freundlich (R 2  = 0.984-0.996) isothermal models at pH 7.0. Maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacities were 119/133 for Sch-Chem/Sch-Bio, and 14.6/83.6 for Aka-Chem/Aka-Bio. The H 2 PO 4 - than SO 4 2- /CO 3 2- had a stronger effect on Cr(VI) adsorption. Adsorbents with pH ZPC of near to 4.0 still had a good Cr(VI) removal ability at pH 3.0-8.0. The possible Cr(VI) adsorption mechanisms by FTIR and XPS results for schwertmannite and akaganéite were electrostatic attractions and ion exchanges between hydroxyl (or sulfate) and chromate ions. The Cr(VI) adsorption of optimal schwertmannite and bioakaganéite was a spontaneous, endothermic and random process at the temperatures of 288-318 K. They had a good regeneration ability for Cr(VI) adsorption, and removal ratios could reach to about 80% of original values (60-70% in aqueous solution with 60 mg/L Cr(VI) and pH7.0, and 35-50% in wastewater with 120 mg/L Cr(VI) and about pH4.0), after three cycles. Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) pose a great threat to water environment security. In this study, acyclovir (ACV) was efficiently degraded by thermally activated persulfate (TAP) system. The ACV degradation increased with rising reaction temperature and persulfate dosage. With the existence of inorganic anions and humic acid, ACV removal was retarded to varying degrees. Under strong alkaline condition, it was observed that the degradation of ACV was significantly inhibited. In addition, Kintecus software was employed to simulate ACV removal and achieved a good fit with the experimental results. The contribution rates of main reactive radicals under acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions were investigated, and the contribution of hydroxyl radical (⋅OH) increased significantly under alkaline condition. The main active species were identified as sulfate radical (SO 4 ⋅ - ) and ⋅OH through quenching experiment, and the second-order reaction rate constants of SO 4 ⋅ - and ∙OH reacted with ACV were calculated to be 9.17 × 10 9  M -1  s -1 and 2.74 × 10 9  M -1  s -1 , respectively. The main degradation pathways included addition of free radicals, oxidation of branch chain and ring opening. Reverse osmosis (RO) is an advanced technology used to produce potable water from a variety of water sources, including surface water, seawater and wastewater. The yield of the product water from the RO systems is increased by the addition of antiscalants which prevent scaling from calcium and other ions. Removal of antiscalants from RO concentrate can induce the precipitation of oversaturated scale-forming substances, enable additional water recovery from RO concentrates, and reduce the risk of eutrophication after concentrate disposal into the receiving water (e.g., river water). This study aims to provide a better insight into oxidation reactions of the N-free phosphonate antiscalants 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) and 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTC) with ozone, hydroxyl radical ( • OH) and sulfate radicals (SO 4 •- ). Ozone barely reacts with HEDP and PBTC at pH 7 (k < 10 M -1 s  -   1 ), while second order reaction rates of SO 4 •- and • OH were determined to be in the range 10 7 -10 8 M  -   1 s  -   1 . Sulfate, silicate and chloride matrices increased HEDP ozone degradation rate possibly due to metal complexation effect. Whereas carbonate and chloride hindered PBTC ozone degradation, and natural organic matter (NOM) inhibited both HEDP and PBTC degradation through scavenging of • OH. The SO 4 •- - radical based oxidation process of HEDP and PBTC is mainly inhibited by carbonate and NOM, interestingly only HEDP degradation is inhibited by chloride whereby the PBTC could not be fully degraded (degradation < 60%). Furfural removal by electrochemically activated peroxydisulfate (E-PS) and peroxymonosulfate (E-PMS) was investigated. The effect of different anodes was investigated for the electrochemical activation of oxidants. Box Behnken Design was applied to determine optimum operating conditions, which were determined as follows; PS concentration: 2.3 mM, applied current: 1.15 A, pH: 3.5, and reaction time: 118.3 min for E-PS process; PMS concentration: 1.8 mM, applied current: 1.05 A, pH: 3.3, and reaction time: 107.8 min for E-PMS process. The results of the study showed that the E-PMS process is more advantageous in terms of the chemical and electricity costs to be used.

Industrial waste, for instance, textile effluents when released into the ecological system without first being treated or with inappropriate levels of treatment, can lead to serious issues deteriorating the environment and human health. Moreover, solid waste from various industries has also become a major issue due to massive urbanization. For instance, the waste from the metal industry has been rapidly increasing such as Jarosite which has various metals, metal oxides, and silica in its composition. Therefore, Jarosite was utilized as an adsorbent for the adsorption of anionic Congo red (CR) and cationic Methylene blue (MB) dyes from aqueous solutions. The processed adsorbent sample was characterized by BET, XRD, SEM, EDS, FTIR, and XPS techniques. The effects of initial dye concentration, pH, adsorbent dose, temperature, and contact time were examined. The metal industry waste is used as a low-cost abundant adsorbent with great potential for adsorption ability to remove the CR (97.5%) and MB (68.5%) at pH 7, contact time 90 min, adsorbent dose 0.1 g, and initial dye concentration 50 mg/L. The adsorption data followed the adsorption isotherm and Kinetics for both dyes. The removal of both dyes was a physical adsorption process, endothermic and spontaneous reaction. Column adsorption investigation was described by AB (Adams-Bohart) and YN (Yoon-Nelson) models. According to the economic view, the utilization of jarosite for dye removal is a cost-effective approach, because it is collected free of cost from industries. In a semi-arid region of Maadher, central Hodna (Algeria), groundwater is the main source for agricultural and domestic purposes. Anthropogenic activities and the presence of climate change's effects have a significant impact on the region's groundwater quality. This study's goals were to use water quality indices to evaluate the groundwater's quality and its suitability for drinking and irrigation, as well as to identify contaminated wells using a geographic information system (GIS) and the spatial interpolation techniques of ordinary kriging and inverse distance weighting (IDW). The results reveal that all water samples exceeded the World Health Organization's standards for nitrate ions and had alarming concentrations of calcium, chlorine, and sulfate (WHO). According to Piper's diagram, the groundwater hydrochemical facies is composed of the elements sulfate-chloride-nitrate-calcium (SO 4 2- -Cl - NO 3 - -Ca 2+ water type). The majority of samples fall into the poor water category, slightly more than 10% fall into the very poor water category, and less than 10% fall into the good to the excellent quality category, per the water quality indices, which classify samples in a similar manner. According to irrigation water indices, every sample is suitable for irrigation. Depending on the direction of groundwater flow, the spatial distributions of Ca 2+ , Na + , Mg 2+ , SO 4 2- , and Cl - show that their concentrations are high north of the area and relatively low south of Maadher village (Fig. 3). Nitrate concentrations are high in the majority of samples, particularly those close to the Bousaada wadi. In most samples, particularly those close to the Bousaada wadi, nitrate levels are high. Various water quality models were described, and GIS spatial distribution maps were created using standard kriging and inverse distance weighting (IDW) techniques through selected semi-variograms predicted against measurements. This work is focused on improving the understanding of the complex water matrix interactions occurring during the removal of a microcontaminants mixture (acetamiprid, carbamazepine and caffeine) by solar/Fe 3+ -EDDS/persulfate process. The individual and combined effects of sulfates (100-500 mg/L), nitrates (20-160 mg/L), bicarbonates (77-770 mg/L) and chlorides (300-1500 mg/L) were assessed by comparing the outcomes obtained in different synthetic and actual water matrices. In general, the results showed negligible effects of the different anions on Fe 3+ -EDDS concentration and PS consumption profiles, while the combination of bicarbonates and chlorides seemed to be the key for the MC removal efficiency decrease found when working with complex matrixes. Finally, the influence of dissolved organic matter on process performance was evaluated. It was concluded that there is neither any influence of this variable on Fe 3+ -EDDS concentration and PS consumption profiles. Recent research revealed inhibition or enhancement of dissolved organic matter (DOM) to the degradation of trace organic contaminants (TrOC) in natural and engineered water systems. Phenols containing acetyl, carboxyl, formyl, hydroxy, and methoxy groups were selected as the model DOM to quantitatively study their roles in the degradation of simple anilines, sulfonamide antibiotics, phenylurea pesticides by sulfate radicals (SO 4 • - ). Experimental results found that p-methoxyphenol inhibited aniline and sulfamethoxazole degradation by thermally activated peroxydisulfate (TAP), while p-acetylphenol slightly promoted aniline degradation. Quantum chemical calculations were applied to study the microscopic mechanism and kinetics of phenols affecting the degradation of aniline pollutants (AN) in three ways: competitively reacting with SO 4 • - , repairing aniline cationic radicals (AN • + ) and phenylaminyl radicals (AN(-H) • ), and generating phenoxy radicals to degrade anilines. Generally, the degradation of sulfonamides and phenylureas prefer to be inhibited by hydroxy- and methoxy-phenols with low oxidation potential (E ox ), due to their diffusion-limiting reaction with SO 4 • - and rapid back-reduction AN • + with the calculated rate constants of (0.02 - 6.38) × 10 9 M -1 s -1 . Phenols repairing AN(-H) • through H abstraction reaction is speculated to possibly dominate the joint degradation of phenols and anilines by TAP, which has a poor correlation with E ox . Owing to the rapid development of modern industry, a greater number of organic pollutants are discharged into the water matrices. In recent decades, research efforts have focused on developing more effective technologies for the remediation of water containing pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Recently, sulfate radicals-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) have been extensively used due to their high oxidizing potential, and effectiveness compared with other AOPs in PPCPs remediation. The present review provides a comprehensive assessment of the different methods such as heat, ultraviolet (UV) light, photo-generated electrons, ultrasound (US), electrochemical, carbon nanomaterials, homogeneous, and heterogeneous catalysts for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS). In addition, possible activation mechanisms from the point of radical and non-radical pathways are discussed. Then, biodegradability enhancement and toxicity reduction are highlighted. Comparison with other AOPs and treatment of PPCPs by the integrated process are evaluated as well. The rapid increase in urbanization and intensive coal mining activities have accelerated the deterioration of surface water quality. Environmental problems caused by the accumulation of nitrate and sulfate from natural, urban, and agricultural sources have attracted extensive attention. Information on nitrate and sulfate sources and their transformations is crucial for understanding the nitrogen and sulfur cycles in surface water. In this study, we monitored nitrate and sulfate in three representative rivers in mining cities in northern China. The main pollution sources and biogeochemical processes were identified by using stable isotopes (δD, δ 18 O H2O , δ 15 N, δ 18 O NO3 , δ 34 S and δ 18 O SO4 ) and hydrochemistry. The contribution of natural and anthropogenic sources was quantitatively estimated based on a Bayesian mixed model. The results indicated a large variation in sulfate and nitrate sources between the different rivers. Nitrate in the Tuohe River mainly derived from manure/sewage (57.9%) and soil N (26.9%), while sulfate mainly derived from manure/sewage (41.7%) and evaporite dissolution (26.8%). For the Suihe River, nitrate was primarily sourced from chemical fertilizer (37.9%) and soil nitrogen (34.8%), while sulfate was mainly sourced from manure/sewage (33.1%) and chemical fertilizer (21.4%). For the Huihe River, nitrate mainly derived from mine drainage (56.6%) and manure/sewage (30.6%), while sulfate predominantly originated from mine drainage (58.3%) and evaporite dissolution (12.9%). Microbial nitrification was the major pathway for the migration and transformation of nitrate in the surface water. However, denitrification and bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR) did not play a significant role as aerobic conditions prevailed. In this study, we elucidated the sources and transformation mechanisms of nitrate and sulfate. In this work, the different selectivity of SO 4 •- and • OH towards municipal solid waste incineration leachates (MSWILs) was studied by a comparative study of UV/persulfate (PS) and UV/H 2 O 2 . Results showed SO 4 •- preferentially mineralized carbon atoms of higher average oxidation state, while • OH showed a two-stage mechanism of partial oxidation and mineralization successively. Electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis showed SO 4 •- had superior selectivity towards MSWILs than • OH, and Fe(II) would significantly affect the selectivity via forming Fe-MSWILs complex. As the consequence, Fe(II) showed slightly negative effect on UV/PS, but greatly enhanced the performance of UV/H 2 O 2 /Fe(II). High concentration of Cl - affected the degradation of non-fluorescent substances by UV/PS, while SO 4 2 - and NO 3 - showed no effect. In contrast, anions showed no effect on UV/H 2 O 2 . In addition, • OH preferentially attacked large molecules, but SO 4 •- showed no selectivity. Tetracycline (TC), an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infectious diseases, is easily transferred to environmental matrixes and then sparks environmental concerns. In this study, TC was selected as a target pollutant to investigate the degradation performance of persulfate (PS) based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) using FeS as the activator (FeS/PS). The results showed that with optimal PS and FeS concentrations of 1 mM and a pseudo-second-order rate constant (k 2 ) of 3.45 L mmol -1  min -1 , 91.39% of TC, was effectively removed within 60 min. From the perspective of degradation rate, apart from CO 3 2- , TC decompositions by FeS/PS were hardly disturbed by the coexistence of different concentrations of Cl - , NO 3 - , SO 4 2- , and humin acid. The degradation of TC under the O 2 bubbling, N 2 bubbling, and light-proof conditions also had limited effects on these AOPs. In addition, FeS exhibited excellent stability and recyclability when used as a PS activator for TC removal. The PS activated by old FeS and used FeS showed nearly identical performances on TC removal compared with the fresh FeS. It is suggested that homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions are jointly responsible for TC oxidation by FeS/PS. With the contributions of the generated, highly reactive SO 4 - •, and, in particular, •OH, TC enabled the mineralization of inorganic products eventually. The present study investigated the roles of peroxydisulfate (PDS) radicals and sulfate radicals (SO 4 •- ) that formed from sulfate (SO 4 2- ) during electrochemical oxidation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The effect of operating parameters such as different types of electrolytes (NaCl, NaClO 4 , and Na 2 SO 4 ), initial pH, current density, dose of electrolyte, and initial concentration of PFOA using electrochemical oxidation for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) decomposition study was investigated. A difference in the removal efficiency with different electrolytes (i.e., Cl - , ClO 4 - , and SO 4 2- ) illustrated an increasing effect of electrooxidation of PFOA in the order of ClO 4 -  < Cl -  < SO 4 2- , which suggested that • OH induced oxidation and direct e - transfer reaction continued to play a crucial role in oxidation of PFOA. At the optimum treatment condition of j = 225.2 Am -2 , Na 2 SO 4 concentration = 1.5 gL -1 , [PFOA] o  = 50 mgL -1 and initial pH = 3.8 maximum PFOA removal of 92% and TOC removal of 80% was investigated at 240 min. The formation of three shorter-chain perfluorocarboxylates (i.e., perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA), perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), and perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA) and formate (HCOO - ) ions were detected as by-products of PFOA electro-oxidation, showing that the C-C bond first broken in C 7 F 15 and then mineralized into CO 2 , and fluoride ion (F - ). The fluorine recovery as F - ions and the organic fluorine as the shorter-chain by-products were also obtained. Nearly 57 million people depend on Yamuna's water for their daily needs and agriculture. This is the first study of assessment of the Yamuna River for five major pollutants - Nitrate, Sulfate, Phosphate, Silicon, and Chloride, and the role of inhabitant algal species for phycoremediation. Water samples were collected from 11 different locations across three different seasons and it was found that the concentration of these pollutants varies in different locations and seasons. The concentration of Nitrate 392.93 mg/L at ITO Monsoon 2021, Phosphate 86.25 mg/L at Baghpat, Silicon 257.34 mg/L at Faridabad, Sulfate 2165.949 mg/L at ITO during winter 2020, and Chloride 4400.741 mg/L at Old bridge during Monsoon 2021 are found maximum. A significant variation ( p  < 0.05) in the concentrations of Nitrate, Sulfate, Phosphate, Silicon, and Chloride before and after treatment with microalgae was observed in water samples. All six algae significantly remove all the pollutants, and the maximum pollutants removed are Phosphate and Nitrite. Scenedesmus sp., removes the highest 99.21% Phosphate and 86.31% Nitrate, whereas 78.50% of Sulfate was removed by Klebsormidium sp. The highest 92.77% Silicon and 86.20% Chloride were removed by Oocystis sp. This finding suggests that out of six algae, Scenedesmus sp., in the Yamuna water has grown primarily at all the sites and reduces maximum pollutants. The outcomes from this study confirms that Yamuna River is highly contaminated at all the sites from these five major pollutants and algae are still survive in highly contaminated Yamuna water where no other plants are grown and phycoremediate the water bodies even in the presence of very high-stress condition. These algae can further be utilized for biotreatment of any contaminated water body.

Changes in sulfate (SO 4 2- ) deposition have been linked to changes in mercury (Hg) methylation in peatlands and water quality in freshwater catchments. There is little empirical evidence, however, of how quickly methyl-Hg (MeHg, a bioaccumulative neurotoxin) export from catchments might change with declining SO 4 2- deposition. Here, we present responses in total Hg (THg), MeHg, total organic carbon, pH, and SO 4 2- export from a peatland-dominated catchment as a function of changing SO 4 2- deposition in a long-term (1998-2011), whole-ecosystem, control-impact experiment. Annual SO 4 2- deposition to half of a 2-ha peatland was experimentally increased 6-fold over natural levels and then returned to ambient levels in two phases. Sulfate additions led to a 5-fold increase in monthly flow-weighted MeHg concentrations and yields relative to a reference catchment. Once SO 4 2- additions ceased, MeHg concentrations in the outflow streamwater returned to pre-SO 4 2- addition levels within 2 years. The decline in streamwater MeHg was proportional to the change in the peatland area no longer receiving experimental SO 4 2- inputs. Importantly, net demethylation and increased sorption to peat hastened the return of MeHg to baseline levels beyond purely hydrological flushing. Overall, we present clear empirical evidence of rapid and proportionate declines in MeHg export from a peatland-dominated catchment when SO 4 2- deposition declines.
