Water stress has been one of the most serious threat to the crop growth, development and yield quality in agricultural fields. Timely and accurate diagnosis of crop water stress can greatly contribute to the precision irrigation for the crop resilience and yield. In this study, the research object was taken from the summer maize in the typical dryland agricultural area of northwest China. A six-channel multispectral sensor was mounted on a drone to obtain the remote sensing image data of summer maize at the nodulatione and staminate pulling stage in 2022. At the same time, the stomatal conductance and phenotypic parameters of summer maize were also collected. The background was removed by supervised classification. The canopy vegetation index and image texture were obtained using the gray-scale covariance matrix. The sensitive vegetation index, image texture and phenotypic parameters and their combinations were screened out by the Bayesian information criterion and full subset filtering. The summer maize stomatal conductance estimation model was constructed to combine the three types of machine learnings: the extreme learning machine, the random forest, and the back-propagation neural network. The optimal model was mapped to estimate the stomatal conductance. The Pearson correlation coefficient of vegetation index and stomatal conductance were significantly positively correlated, whereas, the canopy reflectance of summer maize was weakly negatively correlated. Different types of image textures at different wavelengths were correlated with the stomatal conductance, and the highest correlation was found in the 550 nm band. The Pearson correlation coefficients between morphological structure phenotypes (plant height, stem thickness and leaf area) and stomatal conductance of summer maize were 0.72, 0.58 and 0.69, respectively, where the three types of phenotypic parameters data were correlated well with stomatal conductance. Vegetation indices with spectral reflectance data were used to assess the overall health and moisture status of the vegetation. Image texture was used to capture the spatial distribution, texture and structural features of crops. Crop phenotypic parameters were then used to reflect the physiological and morphological responses of the crop in a three-dimensional manner, providing visual information about the growth and moisture of the vegetation. The decision coefficients of the crop water stress diagnostic models that constructed from the three information sources increased from 0.728 and 0.750 to 0.841, respectively, compared with the single or two combinations, indicating the great potential to stomatal conductance prediction. The optimal combination of indicators was screened by Bayesian information criterion and full subset screening: DWSI, NDVI, MEA, ENT, plant height and leaf area. The back-propagation neural network model with the three complementary information sources was the optimal model for the water stress diagnosis of summer maize (coefficient of determination of 0.841, root mean square error of 0.043 mol/(m2 ·s), and mean absolute error of 0.034 mol/(m² ·s)). The underestimation of stomatal conductance was significantly improved, compared with the rest models. The inverse map with the optimal model was widely applied to easily and accurately diagnose the crop water stress for the purpose of irrigation strategies and resource allocation. Timely and accurate detection of crop water stress is vital for precision irrigation. Whether the accuracy of the prevailing diagnosis of crop water stress using vegetation indices (VIs) and spectral reflectance can be improved still remains to be investigated. The crop surface characteristics such as grayscale or color vary under different water stress, so in this study one more variable, image texture, was utilized together to diagnose water stress. For this end, the canopy image of winter wheat in bloom was obtained by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with multispectral sensor, and the effect of soil background was eliminated using vegetation index threshold method. On this basis, Grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) was used to calculate the mean (MEA), variance (VAR), homogeneity (HOM), contrast (CON), dissimilarity (DIS), entropy (ENT), second moment (SEC) and correlation (COR) of the image texture under different spatial resolutions (0.008 m, 0.01 m, 0.02 m, 0.05 m, 0.1 m and 0.2 m). Next, the canopy vegetation indices were obtained by mathematical transformation of canopy reflectance, and then sensitive image texture and vegetation indices by full subset regression method. Finally, Cubist, BPNN (Back Propagation Neural Network) and ELM (Extreme Learning Machine) methods were adopted to build the estimation models of the stomatal conductance (Gs) of winter wheat (between the sensitive image texture and Gs, and between vegetation index and Gs), and the water stress map was plotted based on the optimal Gs estimation model. The result showed: (i) the image texture obtained from the high-resolution multispectral image had a high correlation with Gs, and the image texture (VAR, HOM, CON, DIS, ENT and SEC) at 550 nm had the most significant correlation; (ii) the higher the ground resolution, the higher the correlation between the Gs and the image texture, the vegetation indices, respectively. The image texture with a ground resolution of 0.008 m combined with VIs and Gs had the highest correlation, and combining image texture and vegetation index can significantly improve the estimation accuracy of winter wheat Gs; (iii) Among the three estimation models, the BPNN model constructed by combining the image texture and VIs (MEA, VAR, ENT, DWSI and EXG) had the best estimation performance (Calibration: R c 2 = 0.899, RMSE c = 0.01, MAE c = 0.006; Validation: R c 2 = 0.834, RMSE v =;0.018, MAE v = 0.014), and an accurate estimation could even be achieved at a lower Gs value. Compared with the BPNN model solely based on VIs or image texture, the R c 2 of the BPNN model based on the combined variables increased by 24% and 22.48%, respectively. Crop lodging detrimentally affects crop yield and mechanical harvest efficiency. Traditional remote sensing-based methods primarily focus on the identification and area extraction of lodging using image texture and spectrum. However, the response of image texture and spectrum to lodging is indirect and varies under diverse conditions. Moreover, other important finer details of lodging phenotyping, such as lodging angle and lodging type, have frequently been neglected. In this study, a robust and accurate method was developed for investigating lodging phenotypes in the field. The method was based on the three-dimensional morphological information of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) canopy reconstructed from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images. In contrast to traditional remote sensing methods that only identify lodging targets and their respective areas, the novel method in this study calculated the total lodging angle (TLA), root lodging angle (RLA), stem lodging angle (SLA = TLA - RLA), and lodging types according to a morphological method and a lodging classification model. Initially, the method employed a geometric model to characterize the stalk shape of lodged rapeseed. After assessing numerous lodging samples from individual rapeseed plants, the circle function was identified as the optimal geometric model. With this optimal function, the canopy height derived from the UAV images was found effective in calculating TLA, RLA, and SLA across 24 rapeseed cultivars in five climatic zones within the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) in China. Results showed that the average root mean square error (RMSE) was 8.3° for TLA and 7.4° for RLA. Subsequently, based on field measured data of SLA and RLA, a decision tree model was constructed to classify lodging types and an accuracy of 95.4% was achieved. Using the classification model and estimated values of RLA and SLA, the spatial distribution information and specific area estimates for different lodging types were obtained. Based on the analysis of these results, the rapeseed cultivars Zhongshuang 11 and Dadi 199 were determined to be the dominant cultivars with lodging resistance in the YRB, even though they did not achieve the mean high yields in multiple climatic zones. However, the lodging-prone cultivars such as Qinyou7 and Qinyou33 fell under the low-yield level in all climatic zones. The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based remote sensing technology has become increasingly popular for crop canopy water status estimation. Nevertheless, the capability of vegetation indices (VIs) along with textural information from high-resolution imagery for estimating cotton canopy water status has been rarely explored. The VIs, texture features (TFs), and texture indices (TIs) were obtained from UAV multispectral images of cotton with different irrigation levels and nitrogen rates in the southern Xinjiang of China. The performances of three machine learning models, i.e. support vector machine (SVM), back-propagation neural network (BPNN) and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) were evaluated for estimating canopy equivalent water thickness (CEWT) and crop water stress index (CWSI) throughout the cotton growing season. The results showed that combining vegetation indices and textural information significantly improved the estimation accuracy of models compared to vegetation indices or textural information alone. The XGBoost_VIs + TFs model exhibited the best accuracy in estimating CEWT (R2 = 0.75, RMSE = 0.01 cm, RE = 19.46 % at upper half-canopy level, and R2 = 0.65, RMSE = 0.02 cm, RE = 24.59 % at all-canopy level), while the XGBoost_VIs + TFs + TIs model performed best in predicting CWSI among the models (R2 = 0.90, RMSE = 0.05, RE = 5.84 %). Although CEWT estimation was fair to some extent, CWSI estimation was more applicable for diagnosing cotton water stress. The CWSI maps created from the optimal XGBoost_VIs + TFs + TIs model intuitively reflected the cotton canopy water status under various irrigation levels and nitrogen rates, which could help farmers implement timely and precision irrigation in cotton production. Peanut is a significant oilseed crop that is often affected by peanut southern blight, a disease that greatly reduces crop yield and quality. Therefore, accurate and timely monitoring of this disease is crucial to ensure crop safety and minimize the need for pesticides. Spectral features combined with texture features have been widely applied in plant disease monitoring. However, previous studies have mostly used original texture features, and its combination form has been rarely considered. This study presents a novel approach for monitoring peanut southern blight, integrating multiple spectral indices and textural indices (TIs). Firstly, a total of 20 vegetation indices (VIs) were extracted from the unmanned aerial vehicle multispectral images, while three TIs were constructed based on original textural features. Subsequently, Otsu-CIgreen algorithm was used to find the optimal threshold to eliminate the complex background of the image. Lastly, monitoring models for peanut southern blight were constructed using three machine learning models based on the screened VIs, VIs combined with TIs. Among these models, the K-nearest neighbor model using VIs combined with TIs demonstrates the best performance, with accuracy and F1 score on the test set reaching 91.89% and 91.39% respectively. The results indicate that the monitoring models utilizing VIs and TIs were more effective compared to models using only VIs. In organic farming, clover is an important basis for green manure in crop rotation systems due to its nitrogen-fixing effect. However, clover is often sown in mixtures with grass to achieve a yield-increasing effect. In order to determine the quantity and distribution of clover and its influence on the subsequent crops, clover plants must be identified at the individual plant level and spatially differentiated from grass plants. In practice, this is usually done by visual estimation or extensive field sampling. High-resolution unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offer a more efficient alternative. In the present study, clover and grass plants were classified based on spectral information from high-resolution UAV multispectral images and texture features using a random forest classifier. Three different timestamps were observed in order to depict the phenological development of clover and grass distributions. To reduce data redundancy and processing time, relevant texture features were selected based on a wrapper analysis and combined with the original bands. Including these texture features, a significant improvement in classification accuracy of up to 8% was achieved compared to a classification based on the original bands only. Depending on the phenological stage observed, this resulted in overall accuracies between 86% and 91%. Maize, an important cereal crop and crucial industrial material, is widely used in various fields, including food, feed, and industry. Maize is also a highly adaptable crop, capable of thriving under various climatic and soil conditions. Against the backdrop of intensified climate change, studying the classification of maize growth stages can aid in adjusting planting strategies to enhance yield and quality. Accurate classification of the growth stages of maize breeding materials is important for enhancing yield and quality in breeding endeavors. Traditional remote sensing-based crop growth stage classifications mainly rely on time series vegetation index (VI) analyses; however, VIs are prone to saturation under high-coverage conditions. Maize phenotypic traits at different growth stages may improve the accuracy of crop growth stage classifications. Therefore, we developed a method for classifying maize growth stages during the vegetative growth phase by combining maize phenotypic traits with different classification algorithms. First, we tested various VIs, texture features (TFs), and combinations of VI and TF as input features to estimate the leaf chlorophyll content (LCC), leaf area index (LAI), and fractional vegetation cover (FVC). We determined the optimal feature inputs and estimation methods and completed crop height (CH) extraction. Then, we tested different combinations of maize phenotypic traits as input variables to determine their accuracy in classifying growth stages and to identify the optimal combination and classification method. Finally, we compared the proposed method with traditional growth stage classification methods based on remote sensing VIs and machine learning models. The results indicate that (1) when the VI+TFs are used as input features, random forest regression (RFR) shows a good estimation performance for the LCC (R2: 0.920, RMSE: 3.655 SPAD units, MAE: 2.698 SPAD units), Gaussian process regression (GPR) performs well for the LAI (R2: 0.621, RMSE: 0.494, MAE: 0.397), and linear regression (LR) exhibits a good estimation performance for the FVC (R2: 0.777, RMSE: 0.051, MAE: 0.040); (2) when using the maize LCC, LAI, FVC, and CH phenotypic traits to classify maize growth stages, the random forest (RF) classification method achieved the highest accuracy (accuracy: 0.951, precision: 0.951, recall: 0.951, F1: 0.951); and (3) the effectiveness of the growth stage classification based on maize phenotypic traits outperforms that of traditional remote sensing-based crop growth stage classifications. The object of this study is the process of segmentation of images from unmanned aerial vehicles. It was established that segmentation methods based on k-means and a genetic algorithm work qualitatively on images from space observation systems. It is proposed to use segmentation methods based on k-means and a genetic algorithm for segmenting images from unmanned aerial vehicles. The main stages of image segmentation methods based on k-means and genetic algorithm have been determined. An experimental study of segmentation of images from unmanned aerial vehicles was carried out. Unlike known ones, image segmentation by a k-means-based method that successfully works on images from space surveillance systems cannot be directly applied to image segmentation from unmanned aerial vehicles. Unlike known ones, image segmentation by a method based on a genetic algorithm that successfully works on images from space surveillance systems also cannot be directly applied to image segmentation from unmanned aerial vehicles. The quality of segmentation of images from unmanned aerial vehicles by methods based on k-means and a genetic algorithm was assessed. It was established that: – the average level of first-kind errors is 70 % and 51 % when segmenting an image from an unmanned aerial vehicle using methods based on k-means and a genetic algorithm, respectively; – average level of second-kind errors is 61 % and 43 % when segmenting an image from an unmanned aerial vehicle using methods based on k-means and a genetic algorithm, respectively. Multispectral remote sensing data with abundant spectral information can be used to compute vegetation indices to improve the accuracy of Ginkgo biloba yield prediction. The limited spatial resolution of multispectral cameras restricts the detail capture over wide farmland, but super-resolution (SR) reconstruction methods can enhance image quality. However, most existing SR models have been trained on images processed from downsampled high-resolution (HR) images, making them less effective in reconstructing real low-resolution (LR) images. This study proposes a GAN-based super-resolution reconstruction method (RMSRGAN) for multispectral remote sensing images of Ginkgo biloba trees in real scenes. A U-Net-based network is employed instead of the traditional discriminator. Convolutional block attention modules (CBAMs) are incorporated into the Residual-in-Residual Dense Blocks (RRDBs) of the generator and the U-Net of the discriminator to preserve image details and texture features. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a multispectral camera was employed to capture field multispectral remote sensing images of Ginkgo biloba trees at different spatial resolutions. Four matching HR and LR datasets were created from these images to train RMSRGAN. The proposed model outperforms the traditional models by achieving superior results in both quantitative evaluation metrics (peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) is 32.490, 31.085, 27.084, 26.819, and structural similarity index (SSIM) is 0.894, 0.881, 0.832, 0.818, respectively) and qualitative evaluation visualization. Furthermore, the efficiency of our proposed method was tested by generating individual vegetation indices (VIs) from images taken before and after reconstruction to predict the yield of Ginkgo biloba. The results show that the SR images exhibit better R 2 and R M S E values than LR images. These findings show that RMSRGAN can improve the spatial resolution of real multispectral images, increasing the accuracy of Ginkgo biloba yield prediction and providing more effective and accurate data support for crop management. This research addresses the problem of early detection of smoke and open fire on the observed territory by unmanned aerial vehicles. We solve the tasks of improving the quality of incoming video data by removing motion blur and stabilizing the video stream; detecting the horizon line in the frame; and identifying fires using semantic segmentation with Euclidean–Mahalanobis distance and the modified convolutional neural network YOLO. The proposed horizon line detection algorithm allows for cutting off unnecessary information such as cloud-covered areas in the frame by calculating local contrast, which is equivalent to the pixel informativeness indicator of the image. Proposed preprocessing methods give a delay of no more than 0.03 s due to the use of a pipeline method for data processing. Experimental results show that the horizon clipping algorithm improves fire and smoke detection accuracy by approximately 11%. The best results with the neural network were achieved with YOLO 5m, which yielded an F1 score of 76.75% combined with a processing speed of 45 frames per second. The obtained results differ from existing analogs by utilizing a comprehensive approach to early fire detection, which includes image enhancement and alternative real-time video processing methods. Introduction: The cold stress is one of the most important factors for affecting production throughout year, so effectively evaluating frost damage is great significant to the determination of the frost tolerance in lettuce. Methods: We proposed a high-throughput method to estimate lettuce FDI based on remote sensing. Red-Green-Blue (RGB) and multispectral images of open-field lettuce suffered from frost damage were captured by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle platform. Pearson correlation analysiswas employed to select FDIsensitive features from RGB and multispectral images. Then the models were established for different FDI-sensitive features based on sensor types and different groups according to lettuce colors using multiple linear regression, support vector machine and neural network algorithms, respectively. Results and discussion: Digital number of blue and red channels, spectral reflectance at blue, red and near-infrared bands as well as six vegetation indexes (VIs) were found to be significantly related to the FDI of all lettuce groups. The high sensitivity of four modified VIs to frost damage of all lettuce groups was confirmed. The average accuracy of models were improved by 3% to 14% through a combination of multisource features. Color of lettuce had a certain impact on the monitoring of frost damage by FDI prediction models, because the accuracy of models based on green lettuce groupwere generally higher. The MULTISURCE-GREEN-NN model with R² of 0.715 and RMSE of 0.014 had the best performance, providing a high-throughput and efficient technical tool for frost damage investigation which will assist the identification of cold-resistant green lettuce germplasm and related breeding. Accurate estimates of canopy structure like canopy cover (CC), Leaf Area Index (LAI), crown volume (Vcr), as well as tree and stand structure like stem volume (V_st) and basal area (G), are considered essential measures to manage poplar plantations effectively as they are correlated with the growth rate and the detection of possible stress. This research exploits the possibility of developing a precision forestry application using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), terrestrial digital camera and traditional field measurements to monitor poplar plantation variables. We set up the procedure using explanatory variables from the Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix textural metrics (Entropy, Variance, Dissimilarity and Contrast) calculated based on UAV multispectral imagery. Our results show that the GCLM texture derived by multispectral ortomosaic provides adequate explanatory variables to predict poplar plantation characteristics related to plants' canopy and stand structure. The evaluation of the models targeting the different poplar plantation variables (i.e. Vcr, G_ha, Vst_ha, CC and LAI) with the four GLCM explanatory variables (i.e. Entropy, Variance, Dissimilarity and Contrast) consistently higher or equal resulted to R² ≥0.86. The Leaf Area Index (LAI) is a crucial indicator of crop photosynthetic potential, which is of great significance in farmland monitoring and precision management. This study aimed to predict potato plant LAI for potato plant growth monitoring, integrating spectral, textural, and morphological data through UAV images and machine learning. A new texture index named VITs was established by fusing multi-channel information. Vegetation growth features (Vis and plant height Hdsm) and texture features (TIs and VITs) were obtained from drone digital images. Various feature combinations (VIs, VIs + TIs, VIs + VITs, VIs + VITs + Hdsm) in three growth stages were adopted to monitor potato plant LAI using Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR), Support Vector Regression (SVR), random forest (RF), and eXtreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), so as to find the best feature combinations and machine learning method. The performance of the newly built VITs was tested. Compared with traditional TIs, the estimation accuracy was obviously improved for all the growth stages and methods, especially in the tuber-growth stage using the RF method with 13.6% of R2 increase. The performance of Hdsm was verified by including it either as one input feature or not. Results showed that Hdsm could raise LAI estimation accuracy in every growth stage, whichever method is used. The most significant improvement appeared in the tuber-formation stage using SVR, with an 11.3% increase of R2. Considering both the feature combinations and the monitoring methods, the combination of VIs + VITs + Hdsm achieved the best results for all the growth stages and simulation methods. The best fitting of LAI in tuber-formation, tuber-growth, and starch-accumulation stages had an R2 of 0.92, 0.83, and 0.93, respectively, using the XGBoost method. This study showed that the combination of different features enhanced the simulation of LAI for multiple growth stages of potato plants by improving the monitoring accuracy. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based remote sensing has been widely considered recently in field scale crop yield estimation. In this research, the capability of 13 spectral indices in the form of 5 groups was studied under different irrigation water and N fertilizer managements in terms of corn biomass monitoring and estimation. Farm experiments were conducted at Urmia University, Iran. The research was done using a randomized complete block design at three levels of 60, 80, and 100% of irrigation water and nitrogen requirements during four replications. The aerial imagery operations were performed using a fixed-wing UAV equipped with a Sequoia sensor during three plant growth stages including stem elongation, flowering, and silking. The effect of different irrigation water and nitrogen levels on vegetation indices and crop biomass was examined using variance decomposition analysis. Then, the correlation of the vegetation indices with corn biomass was evaluated by fitting linear regression models. Based on the obtained results, the indices based on near infrared (NIR) and red-edge spectral bands showed a better performance. Thus, the MERIS terrestrial chlorophyll index (MTCI) indicated the highest accuracy at estimating corn biomass during the growing season with the R2 and RMSE values of 0.92 and 8.27 ton/ha, respectively. Finally, some Bayesian model averaging (BMA) models were proposed to estimate corn biomass based on the selected indices and different spectral bands. Accurately identifying the quantity of maize seedlings is useful in improving maize varieties with high seedling emergence rates in a breeding program. The traditional method is to calculate the number of crops manually, which is labor-intensive and time-consuming. Recently, observation methods utilizing a UAV have been widely employed to monitor crop growth due to their low cost, intuitive nature and ability to collect data without contacting the crop. However, most investigations have lacked a systematic strategy for seedling identification. Additionally, estimating the quantity of maize seedlings is challenging due to the complexity of field crop growth environments. The purpose of this research was to rapidly and automatically count maize seedlings. Three models for estimating the quantity of maize seedlings in the field were developed: corner detection model (C), linear regression model (L) and deep learning model (D). The robustness of these maize seedling counting models was validated using RGB images taken at various dates and locations. The maize seedling recognition rate of the three models were 99.78% (C), 99.9% (L) and 98.45% (D) respectively. The L model can be well adapted to different data to identify the number of maize seedlings. The results indicated that the high-throughput and fast method of calculating the number of maize seedlings is a useful tool for maize phenotyping. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unmanned aerial vehicles have large prospects for organizing territory monitoring. To integrate them into this sphere, it is necessary to improve their high functionality and safety. Computer vision is one of the vital monitoring aspects. In this paper, we developed and validated a methodology for terrain classification. The overall classification procedure consists of the following steps: (1) pre-processing, (2) feature extraction, and (3) classification. For the pre-processing stage, a clustering method based on particle swarm optimization was elaborated, which helps to extract object patterns from the image. Feature extraction is conducted via Gray-Level Co-Occurrence Matrix calculation, and the output of the matrix is turned into the input for a feed-forward neural network classification stage. The developed computer vision system showed 88.7% accuracy on the selected test set. These results can provide high quality territory monitoring; prospectively, we plan to establish a self-positioning system based on computer vision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) oblique photography technology has been applied more and more widely for the 3D reconstruction of real-scene models due to its high efficiency and low cost. However, there are many kinds of UAVs with different positioning methods, camera models, and resolutions. To evaluate the performance levels of different types of UAVs in terms of their application to 3D reconstruction, this study took a primary school as the research area and obtained image information through oblique photography of four UAVs of different levels at different flight altitudes. We then conducted a comparative analysis of the accuracy of their 3D reconstruction models. The results show that the 3D reconstruction model of M300RTK has the highest dimensional accuracy, with an error of about 1.1–1.4 m per kilometer, followed by M600Pro (1.5–3.6 m), Inspire2 (1.8–4.2 m), and Phantom4Pro (2.4–5.6 m), but the accuracy of the 3D reconstruction model was found to have no relationship with the flight altitude. At the same time, the resolution of the 3D reconstruction model improved as the flight altitude decreased and the image resolution of the PTZ camera increased. The 3D reconstruction model resolution of the M300RTK + P1 camera was the highest. For every 10 m decrease in flight altitude, the clarity of the 3D reconstruction model improved by 16.81%. The UAV flight time decreased as the UAV flying altitude increased, and the time required for 3D reconstruction of the model increased obviously as the number and resolution of photos increased. Remote sensing has revolutionised many aspects of ecological research, enabling spatiotemporal data to be collected in an efficient and highly automated manner. The last two decades have seen phenomenal growth in capabilities for high‐resolution remote sensing that increasingly offers opportunities to study small, but ecologically important organisms, such as insects. Here we review current applications for using remote sensing within entomological research, highlighting the emerging opportunities that now arise through advances in spatial, temporal and spectral resolution. Remote sensing can be used to map environmental variables, such as habitat, microclimate and light pollution, capturing data on topography, vegetation structure and composition, and luminosity at spatial scales appropriate to insects. Such data can also be used to detect insects indirectly from the influences that they have on the environment, such as feeding damage or nest structures, whilst opportunities for directly detecting insects are also increasingly available. Entomological radar and light detection and ranging (LiDAR), for example, are transforming our understanding of aerial insect abundance and movement ecology, whilst ultra‐high spatial resolution drone imagery presents tantalising new opportunities for direct observation. Remote sensing is rapidly developing into a powerful toolkit for entomologists, that we envisage will soon become an integral part of insect science. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shrublands are the main vegetation component in the Gobi region and contribute considerably to its ecosystem. Accurately classifying individual shrub vegetation species to understand their spatial distributions and to effectively monitor species diversity in the Gobi ecosystem is essential. High-resolution remote sensing data create vegetation type inventories over large areas. However, high spectral similarity between shrublands and surrounding areas remains a challenge. In this study, we provide a case study that integrates object-based image analysis (OBIA) and the random forest (RF) model to classify shrubland species automatically. The Gobi region on the southern slope of the Tian Shan Mountains in Northwest China was analyzed using readily available unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) RGB imagery (1.5 cm spatial resolution). Different spectral and texture index images were derived from UAV RGB images as variables for species classification. Principal component analysis (PCA) extracted features from different types of variable sets (original bands, original bands + spectral indices, and original bands + spectral indices + texture indices). We tested the ability of several non-parametric decision tree models and different types of variable sets to classify shrub species. Moreover, we analyzed three main shrubland areas comprising different shrub species and compared the prediction accuracies of the optimal model in combination with different types of variable sets. We found that the RF model could generate higher accuracy compared with the other two models. The best results were obtained using a combination of the optimal variable set and the RF model with an 88.63% overall accuracy and 0.82 kappa coefficient. Integrating OBIA and RF in the species classification process provides a promising method for automatic mapping of individual shrub species in the Gobi region and can reduce the workload of individual shrub species classification.
