Xyloglucan oligosaccharides (XyGOs) are highly branched, complex carbohydrates with a variety of chemical and biotechnological applications. Due to the regular repeating pattern of sidechain substitution of the xyloglucan backbone, well-defined XyGOs are readily accessed for analytical and preparative purposes by specific hydrolysis of the polysaccharide with endo-glucanases. To broaden the application potential of XyGOs, we present here an optimized, scalable method to access large quantities of galactosylated XyGOs by treatment of the bulk agricultural by-product, tamarind kernel powder (TKP), with a highly specific endo-xyloglucanase at high-solids content. Subsequent β-galactosidase treatment reduced XyGO complexity to produce exclusively the branched heptasaccharide XXXG (Xyl3Glc4: [α-D-Xylp-(1 → 6)]-β-D-Glcp-(1 → 4)-[α-D-Xylp-(1 → 6)]-β-D-Glcp-(1 → 4)-[α-D-Xylp-(1 → 6)]-β-D-Glcp-(1 → 4)-D-Glcp). The challenge of removing the co-product galactose was overcome by fermentation with baker's yeast, thereby avoiding chromatography and other fractionation steps to yield highly pure XXXG. This simplified approach employs many of the core concepts of green chemistry and engineering, enables facile production of 100 g quantities of XyGOs and XXXG for laboratory use, and serves as a guide to further production scale-up for applications, including as prebiotics, plant growth effectors and elicitors, and building blocks for glycoconjugate synthesis. This study explores the application of the epoxidation process of poly‐β‐myrcene, a constituent of the natural resin from Chios Mastic trees (Pistacia Lentiscus L.), as an educational instrument for teaching Green Chemistry and Engineering to students at various academic levels. The study provides a comprehensive presentation of foundational knowledge essential for interpreting the subsequent experimental data. Consequently, the production process that leads to the production of Mastic Epoxide (MASTEP) stands as an invaluable pedagogical resource, enabling educators to impart crucial principles of Green Chemistry and Engineering to both pre‐graduate and post‐graduate students. By employing MASTEP as a case study, this educational approach actively involves students in a dynamic learning environment. Through this methodology, learners develop a profound comprehension of sustainability, innovation, and good practices. The integration of the MASTEP concept into the curriculum would foster a deeper understanding of responsible methodologies among aspiring chemical engineers and scientists, equipping them to make substantial contributions towards a more sustainable global landscape. This document is a special issue of the Environmental Science and Pollution Research Journal that focuses on three international conferences: the 6th International Congress on Water, Waste and Energy Management (WWEM-22), the 5th International Conference on Green Chemistry and Sustainable Engineering (GreenChem-22), and the 22nd International Conference on Green Energy and Environmental Technology (GEET-22). This study delves into an innovative biorefinery approach to extract multiple high-value compounds from a single biomass source, Halobacterium salinarum R1, a resilient halophilic microorganism. By using bio-based solvents, namely an aqueous solution of gamma-valerolactone (GVL) and ethanol, a simple and efficient pipeline approach was developed, recovering unique pigments, including C50 bacterioruberin, as well as two additional fractions consisting of protein and polysaccharides. The process is based on sustainable engineering and green chemistry principles, providing a viable alternative to replacing non-renewable solvents. The study addresses environmental concerns by employing bio-based solvents while presenting a cost-effective and sustainable solution. The present expeditious advancement of green analytical chemistry (GAC) necessitates the establishment of explicit and succinct GAC principles, which may serve as valuable guidance in the adoption of environment friendly laboratory practises. The current ideas of green chemistry and green engineering need modification to effectively address the requirements of analytical chemistry within the context of GAC. The use of multivariate curve resolution (MCR), parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), self-weighted alternating trilinear decomposition (SWATLD), and unfolded partial least squares/residual bi-linearization (UPLS/RBL) are prevalent approaches for the examination of process data across several application domains like to detect contaminants in water samples. A special emphasis was placed on circumstances that necessitate sophisticated and customised implementations of multivariate curve resolution. This will involve addressing enhancements in pre-processing techniques, arrangements of data from multiple sets, customised constraints, challenges associated with non-ideal noise structure, and deviations from linearity. The study furthermore covers a thorough analysis of case studies and new developments within the discipline, highlighting the efficacy of green analytical chemistry in the identification of pharmaceutical substances in wastewater. The field of submicrometer polymeric production currently has a predominant research focus on morphology and application. In comparison, the sustainability of the manufacture of submicrometer polymeric fibers, specifically the energy efficiency, is less explored. The principles of Green Chemistry and Green Engineering outline frameworks for the manufacture of "greener" products, where the most significant principles in the two frameworks are shown to be centered on energy efficiency, material wastage, and the use of non‐hazardous materials. This study examines the power consumption during the production of Polyethylene oxide (PEO) and Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) submicrometer fibers under magnitudes of the key forming parameters to generate fibers via pressure spinning. The energy consumption, along with the fiber diameter, and production rate during the manufacture of fibers is predominantly attributed to the characteristics of polymeric solutions utilized. Active areas of research on chemical looping technologies for the conversion of CO2 to CO are contrasted and discussed, including current performance, methods for material design, and next steps in expanding their development. Generation of CO from CO2 is of interest in sustainable chemistry and engineering to convert anthropogenic CO2 emissions into feedstock for Fischer–Tropsch (FT), methanol to gasoline (MTG), gas-to-liquid (GTL), and other synthesis pathways for fuels and materials. Chemical looping strategies have been identified which not only produce CO, but also H2 from H2O and methane sources, supplying the other key component of syngas. Configurations of these chemical looping technologies into the materials economy potentially constitute sustainable carbon loop cycles for fuels as well as carbon sequestration into industrial and commercial materials. Major areas of research in CO2 conversion by chemical looping, collectively referred to here as CO2CL, including Solar-Thermal Chemical Looping (STCL), Reverse Water Gas Shift Chemical Looping (RWGS-CL), Chemical Looping Reforming (CLR), Super Dry Reforming (SDR), Autothermal Catalyst Assisted Chemical Looping (ACACL), and Reverse Boudouard Reforming (RBR) are discussed in terms of their process characteristics, historical development of oxygen carrier (OC) material, state of the art methods for material design, and future work needed to advance the scale-up of these technologies. Green chemistry and engineering encourage the usage of renewable sources, in replacement fossil fuels. The sector of bio-based products is one of the most predominant examples of such replacements in different fields. However, the impact of biomasses usage is far from being negligible or net zero. A life cycle perspective is required in order to assess all the different environmental impacts related to biomass exploitation and usage, in particular when dedicated sources are used. This study points out the importance of including the results of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) early in the design of new bio-based products, to identify the stage of the value chain with the greatest hotspots and set proper eco-design strategies. At the same time, the use of the LCA results may support purchasing activities through comparing products with different burdens. In this manuscript, a focus on land compartment is carried out, given its relevance to the cultivation phase. Five analysis methods are selected for further description. Three are classified as multi-impact approach methodologies (ReCiPe 2016, IMPACT World + and EF 3.0) since they are able to translate mass and energy balances into several impact categories at the same time, not only those on land comparts which are also included. In addition, the LANCA® model and the True pricing method for agri-food products are discussed, underlining the importance of their usage when a detailed review of the impact on soil is necessary (e.g., during an environmental impact assessment). Sustainability and greenness are the concepts of growing interest in the area of research as well as industries. One of the frequently encountered challenges faced in research and industrial fields is the solubility of the hydrophobic compound. Conventionally organic solvents are used in various applications; however, their contribution to environmental pollution, the huge energy requirement for separation and higher consumption lead to unsustainable practice. We require solvents that curtail the usage of hazardous material, increase the competency of mass and energy and embrace the concept of recyclability or renewability. Hydrotropy is one of the approaches for fulfilling these requirements. The phenomenon of solubilizing hydrophobic compound using hydrotrope is termed hydrotropy. Researchers of various fields are attracted to hydrotropy due to its unique physicochemical properties. In this review article, fundamentals about hydrotropes and various mechanisms involved in hydrotropy have been discussed. Hydrotropes are widely used in separation, heterogeneous chemical reactions, natural product extraction and pharmaceuticals. Applications of hydrotropes in these fields are discussed at length. We have examined the significant outcomes and correlated them with green engineering and green chemistry principles, which could give an overall picture of hydrotropy as a green and sustainable approach for the above applications. Nowadays, heterogeneous photocatalysis for water treatment and hydrogen production are topics gaining interest for scientists and developers from different areas, such as environmental technology and material science. Most of the efforts and resources are devoted to the development of new photocatalyst materials, while the modeling and development of reaction systems allowing for upscaling the process to pilot or industrial scale are scarce. In this work, we present what is known on the upscaling of heterogeneous photocatalysis to purify water and to produce green H2. The types of reactors successfully used in water treatment plants are presented as study cases. The challenges of upscaling the photocatalysis process to produce green H2 are explored from the perspectives of (a) the adaptation of photoreactors, (b) the competitiveness of the process, and (c) safety. Throughout the text, Green Chemistry and Engineering Principles are described and discussed on how they are currently being applied to the heterogeneous photocatalysis process along with the challenges that are ahead. Sustainability has become of paramount importance, as evidenced by the increasing number of norms and regulations concerning various sectors. Due to its intrinsic trans-sectorial nature, tribology has drawn the attention of the supporters of sustainability. This discipline allows the environmental, economic, and social impacts to be decreased in a wide range of applications following the same strategies. In 2010, Nosonovsky and Bhushan drew up 12 approaches based on the 12 principles of green chemistry and the 12 principles of green engineering, defining the "12 principles of green tribology." This review exploits the 12 principles of green tribology to fathom the developed research related to sustainability and tribology. Different approaches and innovative studies have been proposed in this short selection as references to consider for further development, pursuing the efforts of the scientific community for a sustainable future through the contribution also of tribosystems. The manuscript aims to provide practical examples of materials, lubricants, strategies, and technologies that have contributed to the overall progress of tribology, decreasing wear and friction and increasing efficiency, and at the same time promoting sustainable development, lowering toxicity, waste production, and loss of energy and resources. The increasing role of biocatalysis in the green and sustainable manufacture of chemicals is discussed. In the last two decades the breadth and scope of biocatalysis has increased enormously as a result of remarkable advances in metagenomics, protein engineering and bioinformatics. Moreover, the use of enzymes has become more cost-effective through advances in immobilization technologies and the application of the immobilized enzymes in continuous flow operation in packed bed reactors. Consequently, biocatalysis is already the method of choice for the synthesis of enantiopure chiral products for the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries. Critical metal products play an irreplaceable role in all aspects of modern society, however, uncertain supply risk pushed their sustainable recycling and manufacturing into central focus. Compared to traditional metallurgical processes, novel electrochemical technology has been well demonstrated to be a high-efficiency, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective process for critical metal recovery and manufacturing, which is in line with the concept of green chemistry. Originating from the discipline of product engineering, the concept of electrochemical product engineering was established towards sustainable recovery and green manufacturing of critical metals. For this purpose, a range of electrochemical strategies, including electrochemical deposition, cyclone electrowinning, supergravity-enhanced electrodeposition, molten-salt electrodeposition, ionic liquid electrodeposition, and electrodeposition-redox replacement, were successfully developed and systematically discussed. A detailed analytical discussion on various types of metal products/materials obtained via the implementation of electrochemical product engineering, including pure metals, alloys, powders, thin films, and nanomaterials as well as the corresponding applications, has also been presented. On this basis, the principles/directions for future optimization of electrochemical product engineering are proposed. Therefore, to better map the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of electrochemical metal production, key directions are recommended to tackle existing puzzles in the field of critical metal recovery and manufacturing, and promote the sustainability of future material cycling. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are well-known for their enhanced selectivity and affinity for specific targets even in complex matrices. As such, MIPs have been widely employed in various areas such as sensing, catalysis, and drug delivery applications. Considering the limitations of conventional synthesis approaches for MIPs (i.e., reliance on organic solvents and their release into the environment), the use of new cleaner synthesis strategies based on the principles of green chemistry and engineering has become more important to tune the morphology and to unify the binding sites without the involvement of organic solvents. This article has been organized to describe the environmentally friendly features of imprinted materials along with their promising prospects toward sorptive extraction and sensing technologies (e.g., electrochemical/optical sensors). The current challenges in this research field as well as future perspectives are also highlighted. • Safety aspects can be determined indirectly by process of control and flexibility. • Condition number used in control at low frequencies can be related to flexibility. • The measure of control and flexibility as one, can improve future optimizations. • The indicator may contribute to processes that cover the aspects of sustainability. Green chemistry and green engineering, projected in the concept of sustainability, provide inherently safe processes. These safety aspects can be determined indirectly through process controllability and flexibility. Although several indexes have been proposed to measure these parameters, the flexibility index and controllability measured by the condition number are notable. However, these two indicators are usually measured individually, and information inherent to synergies is lost due to the link between profitability and process safety. In the present work we aim to evaluate a quantitative parameter (from the condition number), to simultaneously measure flexibility and controllability of processes to generate a simple measure of sustainability to processes. To demonstrate the relationship of controllability and flexibility, through the condition number, three sequences of solar grade silicon production were explored. In addition, the advantages of using the proposed indicator were demonstrated through a pair of binary and multicomponent reactive distillation sequences. The results clearly showed that the condition number measuring controllability at low frequencies can be related to flexibility. And that this is potentially an indicator that can simultaneously measure controllability and flexibility, and with its use in process design, sustainable processes will be ensured. Microreactor technology as an important means of process intensification has opened vast opportunities for green and sustainable chemical synthesis. Over the past decade, a promising research direction has been seen in the utilization of microreactors for intensifying catalytic biomass conversion. This Perspective provides a concise overview on green process intensification in microreactors for the synthesis of value-added chemicals and fuels from biomass. The focus is laid on process intensification merits of microreactor technology, its alignment with green chemistry and green engineering principles, typical application examples for manufacturing biobased chemicals and fuels including the synthesis of furanic platform chemicals and their derivatives from mono- and disaccharides, liquid-phase oxidation and hydrogenation of lignocellulosic biomass derivatives, and biodiesel synthesis. Finally, an outlook is provided for future research directions, including among others solid (catalyst, feed and product) handling strategies, process integration in cascades or one microreactor, expanding biomass transformation database, photocatalysis and use of novel solvents in microflow. From first-hand understanding of pectin molecular structure and physiological effects up to new production methods and applications, significant insightful knowledge of pectin polysaccharide and pectin-derived oligosaccharides has emerged in the last decade (2010–2020). These developments open the route to new and unexpected applications of this uniquely complex heteropolysaccharide ubiquitous in plants and fruits, well beyond its traditional use as food hydrocolloid. This study provides a unified perspective on the new science and technology of pectin and its extraction by-products. Furthermore, we offer an insight into forthcoming pectin uses from an expanded perspective, taking into account selected technology and economic factors that we believe will shortly impact the pectin production and uptake in many countries. Though synthetic plastics are indispensable in our everyday life, the uncertainty surrounding the sustainability of fossil reserves has led to the development of a novel class of plastics, referred to as bio-based plastics. Poly(lactic) acid (PLA) is the most frequently used member of this family. However, due to the lack of a holistic recycling strategy, its large scale utilization can turn out to be an acute source of plastic pollution in the future. Unlike other attempts directed towards chemical recycling of PLA which violate the basic principles of green chemistry, the following research establishes an eco-friendly recycling concept aimed at the production of a valuable lactate ester through solvent assisted transesterification of PLA waste. The scope of this research is not only limited to the selection of an appropriate system (solvent, nucleophile and catalyst) but also extends to analysing the selectivity of the solvent towards the PLA fraction in a commingled stream and the effect of the concentration of nucleophile and different PLA substrates on the yield of the lactate ester. It was observed that, irrespective of the source of PLA, a high yield of ethyl lactate (approx. 80%) with complete retention of stereochemistry was obtained for a molar ratio of nucleophile per mole repeat unit of PLA (n nuc :n rpu) equivalent to 3. Thus, this work represents an attempt towards instituting circular bio-economy by overcoming the engineering and environmental challenges associated with PLA-waste management and production of ethyl lactate; while strictly adhering to the principles of green chemistry and sustainable chemical engineering. The Virtual Special Issue (VSI) "New research on reduction and/or elimination of hazardous substances in the design, manufacture and application of chemical products" was initially associated to the "International Conference on Green Chemistry and Sustainable Engineering, GreenChem-20" that was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Anyway, the international conference will take place in the near future. However, the VSI was maintained in this journal, received a high number of submissions, and selected manuscripts have been accepted after peer-reviewing. The published papers constitute a set of high-quality contributions, which, in the future, could be complemented with others related to additional conferences about similar topics. In this editorial piece, the Editors include brief comments on papers accepted for publication in the Special Issue, as well as additional aspects of interest related to the subject.
