The 8.2 ka event has been extensively investigated as a remarkable single event but rarely considered as a part of multi-centennial climatic evolution. Here, we present absolutely dated speleothem multi-proxy records spanning 9.0–7.9 ka from Beijing in North China, near the northern limit of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and thus sensitive to climate change, to provide evidence of the intensified multi-decadal climatic oscillations since 8.52 ka. Three extreme excursions characterized by inter-decadal consecutive δ18 O excursions exceeding ±1σ are identified from 8.52 ka in our speleothem record. The earlier two are characterized by enriched 18 O at ∼8.50 and 8.20 ka, respectively, suggesting a prolonged arid event, which is supported by the positive trend in δ13 C values, increased trace element ratios, and lower growth rate. Following the 8.2 ka event, an excessive rebound immediately emerges in our δ18 O and trace element records but moderate in the δ13 C, probably suggesting pluvial conditions and nonlinear response of the local ecosystem. Following two similar severe droughts at 8.50 and 8.20 ka, the different behavior of δ13 C suggests the recovering degree of resilient ecosystem responding to different rebounded rainfall intensity. A comparison with other high-resolution records suggests that the two droughts–one pluvial pattern between 8.52 and 8.0 ka is of global significance instead of being a regional phenomenon, and is causally linked to the slowdown and acceleration of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation that was further dominated by the freshwater injections in the North Atlantic. The 8.2 ka event has been extensively studied, whereas its structure is ambiguous in North China. Here we present a high‐resolution (∼1 year) δ18O record from annual laminated speleothem from Beijing to characterize the detailed variability across this event in North China. Our record indicates a dry 8.2 ka event spanning 8.254–8.107 ka BP with a two‐stage structure superimposed by three prominent high δ18O excursions. The identical structure of speleothem δ18O records between North and central China during the event suggests a common forcing/response in East China, whereas the progressively increased offset between their average values may reflect changes in moisture source or rainout effect. A close comparison with the Greenland ice core records suggests a strong linear response of the Asian summer monsoon to the North Atlantic climate changes across the early and middle stages of the event, but a different mechanism in the termination processes. Plain Language Summary: As the most pronounced abrupt climate event in the Holocene, the 8.2 ka event has been studied using various geological archives worldwide, but its detailed structure in North China and its link to other climate systems remain poorly understood. Since the Beijing speleothem δ18O, a proxy of the precipitation δ18O, is sensitive to the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) variations, it allows us to establish precise timing and structure of the 8.2 ka event and estimate the cause of it. Our new speleothem δ18O record from Beijing reveals a two‐stage structure superimposed by three "V‐shape" excursions during the event and almost exactly covaries with another published speleothem record from central China, suggesting coherent climate changes over the east ASM domain in response to the same forcing. The gradually increased offset between them probably results from the changed atmospheric circulations. Our results suggest a fast climatic signal propagation from the North Atlantic to the ASM domain during the early and middle 8.2 ka event, and another forcing mechanism in the termination processes. Multiple geochemical proxies (e.g., trace elements, δ18O and δ13C) and precise 230Th ages in speleothems are crucial for conducting robust paleoclimatic reconstructions, but the impact of diagenesis on these proxies and 230Th ages is not well-established. In this study, we investigate the petrography and geochemical composition of six aragonite-calcite stalagmites from Shennong Cave in southeastern China to analyze the transformation from aragonite to calcite (primary versus secondary) and its effects on geochemical proxies and 230Th ages. No aragonite relics are observed in columnar calcite in four aragonite-calcite stalagmites (SN55, SN49, SN104 and SNB1), although traces of aragonite exist between the calcite crystals or grow parallel at the aragonite-calcite borders. This is different from the obvious aragonite relics preserved in secondary mosaic calcite in the other two aragonite-calcite stalagmites (SN3 and SN15). Both mosaic and columnar calcite show various changes in geochemical proxies and 230Th ages compared with primary aragonite. The trend in the geochemical proxies analyzed (trace elements, δ18O and δ13C) of columnar calcite remains consistent with those of aragonite, despite significant differences in their absolute values within the overlapping periods. These differences are due to the different fractionation coefficients of isotopes and trace elements in aragonite and calcite formed under the same solution conditions rather than late diagenesis. The 230Th ages of columnar calcite are similar to those of primary aragonite, and the values of subsamples from the same calcite layer are consistent. In contrast, the trace elements and δ13C values of mosaic calcite are similar to those of primary aragonite, while its 230Th age significantly differs from that of primary aragonite, exhibiting no consistent patterns. Therefore, these geochemical characteristics of columnar calcite are significantly different from secondary mosaic calcite, indicating that the columnar calcite in these four aragonite-calcite stalagmites is primary. A comparison of trace elements and δ13C records between aragonite-calcite and pure aragonite stalagmites during the overlapping period further confirms that these columnar calcites are primary. Their geochemical proxies can be used for paleoclimate reconstruction after careful evaluation, and the transformation from aragonite to columnar calcite is caused by increased precipitation. However, due to age and geochemical proxies change, secondary mosaic calcite is unsuitable for paleoclimate reconstruction, unlike columnar calcite. This study provides competent evidence to identify whether calcite in aragonite-calcite stalagmites is primary versus secondary and whether it can be used for paleoclimatic reconstruction. The Sansha Yongle Blue Hole (SYBH) is the deepest (301.19 m) blue hole known in the world and is a water-filled karst opening in the intertidal reef flats of the eastern Yongle Atoll, Xisha Islands, South China Sea. It is differentiated from the surrounding environment by its deep blue colour as observed when viewed from above. The SYBH exhibits extremely rare karst networks and speleothems and differs from the blue holes of the Bahamas and Bermuda, indicating a different development process. Here, we present the morphology and U Th ages of the SYBH, which document the evolution of the coastal cave over time. Morphology and lithostratigraphy indicate that the hole resulted from dissolution via ascending acidic water/gas followed by subsequent collapse. The adjacent volcanoes surrounding the eastern Yongle Atoll are the most likely source of these ascending fluids. U Th ages of the cemented carbonate sand underlying the entrance constrain an upper limit of the opening time of the SYBH to be up to 111.7 ± 9.5 kyr BP. Deeply submerged speleothems at −116 m determine the lower collapse time of the SYBH to be 29.16 ± 0.17 kyr BP. The SYBH probably formed due to the upward release of volcanogenic acid water/gas through low-lying unconsolidated carbonate sediments, followed by buoyant collapses due to a 40-m fall in the sea level during 31–29 kyr BP. As the sea level rose to −15 m in the early Holocene, corals grew in the cave opening since 8.58 kyr BP and surrounded the entrance for the SYBH. • SYBH may be dissolved by volcanic related ascending acidified gases or waters. • SYBH could collapse at about 29 kyr BP due to a rapid sea-level fall. • Optical U Th dating suggests Pleistocene eolianites in the Xisha Islands deposited during MIS 5. Although the 8.2 ka event is a well-known globally documented abrupt climate event, its detailed expression in tropical southeastern Africa is poorly constrained. Here we present a high resolution and precisely dated record of the regional hydroclimatic variability between 8.5–7.5 ka BP from a polymorphic speleothem (ABC-1) from northwestern Madagascar. In combination with the exclusive recurrences of calcite layers (indicative of wetter conditions), the distinctly negative excursions in the ABC-1 δ18O record manifest a wet 8.2 ka event that spanned from 8.230 to 8.053 ka BP. The event is characterized by the replacement of shorter-term (interannual to interdecadal) δ18O-δ13C coherence with the longer-term (multidecadal to centennial) coherence, suggesting a stable and well-developed forest system during the 8.2 ka event. Our data reveal a two-stage structure of the 8.2 ka event, which is superimposed with two brief pluvial episodes in each stage. The widely documented two peaks/troughs during Stage-I suggest rapid propagation of climate signal through atmospheric processes triggered initially by the freshwater forcing, whereas the divergent behaviors of the peaks/troughs in Stage-II in different climate systems may suggest a different forcing. • Exclusively episodic deposition of the calcite layers and lower speleothem δ18O manifest a wet 8.2 ka event in NW Madagascar. • The 8.2 ka event in NW Madagascar exhibits a two-stage structure with each stage superimposed by two severe pluvial episodes. • The timescale variation of coherence between δ18O and δ13C indicates the resilience of the ecosystem to climate change.
