After about a century, the skull of the holotype and sole specimen of Arambourgia gaudryi from the Eocene of Quercy (France) is here redescribed. Its interest resides in its extreme morphology, such as its very small skull and altirostral condition, that raises questions about its maturity, taxonomic validity, and paleoecology. In order to reveal previously hidden anatomical details, we used computed microtomography (µCT-scan) data to digitally extract the bones of the cranium and mandible, as well as the endocranial structures. Here, we update the osteological description of A. gaudryi, outlining new characters and re-evaluating anatomical details. Comparing it with ontogenetic series of extant crocodylians, we confirm that the specimen is a mature individual of a dwarf species with pedomorphic features. Our phylogenetic analyses indicate that A. gaudryi is an alligatorine. Comparisons with other small alligatoroid taxa show that it is indeed a valid species. The depositional environment of the finding site suggests a continental context with a karstic network. Taking this into account, together with its peculiar anatomy, we propose that A. gaudryi was a semi-terrestrial animal occupying an ecological niche similar to that of extant juvenile or dwarf crocodylians. Finally, we discuss the current knowledge of the paleobiogeography of Alligatoroidea in Europe during the Paleogene. Arambourgia gaudryi was likely part of a group of small early globidontans that arrived in the Old World, probably from North America, around the end of the Paleocene and that dispersed to at least four localities of the ancient European archipelago. We describe nearly complete skeletons of basal Anseriformes from the Latest Paleocene to the early Eocene of North America and Europe. Collectively, these birds appear to be representative of anseriforms near the divergence of Anhimae and Anseres, but their exact positions relative to these clades remains uncertain. A new family, Anachronornithidae nov. fam., is erected on the basis of one of these, Anachronornis anhimops nov. gen., nov. gen. et sp., to which the others cannot be confidently assigned. The new fossils augment a growing collection of early Pan-Anseriformes, which in their diversity do not paint an unambiguous picture of phylogeny or character state evolution on the path to or within crown-Anseriformes. Anachronornis nov. gen. is similar in some aspects of both cranial and postcranial anatomy to other well-represented early Paleogene Anseriformes and members of Anseres, such as Presbyornis Wetmore, 1926. However, it exhibits a more landfowl-like bill, like that of Anhimae and unlike the spatulate bill of Anseres. Additional specimens of similar basal Anseriformes of uncertain affinities from the early Eocene of North America and Europe further complicate interpretation of character state polarity due to the mosaicism of primitive and derived characters they exhibit. In contrast to the rich collections of articulated spiny-rayed fishes from early Late Cretaceous and Eocene Lagerstätten, similar skeletal remains are sparse in Maastrichtian-Paleocene strata. Here we coin this poorly understood span "Patterson's Gap" and review known articulated skeletons from it, summarizing available information on their phylogenetic affinities, age, and environmental context. Roughly fifty percent of taxa in both the Maastrichtian and Paleocene come from Europe and North America, with percomorphs representing around 60% of the skeletal acanthomorph taxa in each interval. This is higher than the only pre-Maastrichtian assemblage with a reasonable sample of percomorphs, but lower than most Eocene and younger sites. Fossils from Patterson's Gap show a steady accumulation of the principal lineages of spiny-rayed fishes. Material from Paleocene or older strata provides evidence for most of the roughly 20 major acanthomorph divisions recovered by molecular studies. Many fossils from Patterson's Gap remain undescribed and unnamed, and almost none have been included within formal phylogenetic analyses. Revision of existing material, combined with additional fieldwork, should be a priority for future efforts seeking to clarify this murky but significant interval in the evolutionary history of a major vertebrate radiation. To elucidate phylogenetic patterns in courtship and male-male combat (MMC) behaviors in snakes, I plotted behavioral characters (BCs) onto phylogenetic trees of snakes. For courtship, I plotted 33 BCs onto a phylogenetic tree of 155 snake species in 12 families. For MMC, I plotted 21 BCs onto a phylogenetic tree of 128 snake species in 11 families. For courtship, results suggest the following. Spur Contact and Spur Movement are ancestral for the clade Pythonidae+Boidae and were present as early as the Paleocene Epoch. The Jerk, Chin-Rub, and Dorsal Advance are ancestral for the clade Endoglyptodonta and were present by the late Oligocene. A coital Bite was added in the colubrid clade Zamenis+Lampropeltini by the early Miocene. For MMC, results suggest the following. The Coil, Hook, Type 2 Head Raise, and Downward Push are ancestral for the clade Afrophidia and were present by the early Paleocene. The Type 1 Head Raise replaced the Type 2 Head Raise in Micrurus by the mid-Miocene and in the Lampropeltini by the early Miocene. In the Lampropeltini, Body Bowing was added and Pinning the Head replaced the Type 2 Head Raise by the early Miocene. In addition to written literature, this study utilized a large amount of documentation in the form of video footage on YouTube. For many species, the footage documents behaviors that were unrecorded in the written literature. The results demonstrate that social media can be a highly useful data source in the scientific study of animal behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The South American characiform family Hemiodontidae comprises five genera and 34 species. The family lacks comprehensive phylogenetic hypotheses resolving its species relationships. The studies that addressed these questions exhibited a narrow taxon sampling or used single-locus markers. Herein we surveyed hundreds of ultraconserved elements (UCEs) loci to provide the first molecular phylogenetic hypothesis and divergence time estimates for hemiodontids encompassing all its genera and most species (27 of the 34 valid species). We also tracked the history of the protractile upper jaw in the genera Argonectes and Bivibranchia across the recovered phylogenies through ancestral state reconstruction. Our results corroborate the monophyly of Hemiodontidae and the genera Argonectes and Bivibranchia in all phylogenetic methods with maximum clade support. The genera Anodus and Hemiodus were not monophyletic because Anodus elongatus was sister to the monotypic Micromischodus instead of A. orinocensis , and H. immaculatus did not form a clade with its other congeners, but instead was sister to the clade including Anodus and Micromischodus. All remaining species of Hemiodus were placed together into a monophyletic group, where they were arranged into four major subclades. The relationship in the family is summarised as: (Bivibranchia , (Argonectes , ((H. immaculatus , (Anodus , Micromischodus)), Hemiodus clade))), in discordance with the morphological phylogeny that placed all genera monophyletic and resolved the family as: ((Anodus , Micromischodus), (Hemiodus , (Argonectes , Bivibranchia))). The origin of Hemiodontidae was estimated from the Late Cretaceous to the Middle Paleogene, with the mean age in the Paleocene, while the origin of most hemiodontid genera except Bivibranchia occurred in the Miocene. Tectariaceae s.l. , a clade of ferns in Polypodiales with ca. 300 species mainly distributed in the tropics and subtropics, provide an excellent opportunity to investigate global distribution patterns. Here, we assembled a dataset of eight plastid markers and one nuclear marker of 636 (92% increase of the earlier largest sampling) accessions representing ca. 210 species of all eight genera in Tectariaceae s.l. (Arthropteridaceae, Pteridryaceae, and Tectariaceae s.s.) and 35 species of other families of eupolypods Ⅰ. A new phylogeny is reconstructed to study the biogeography and trait-associated diversification. Our major results include: (1) a distinct lineage of Tectaria sister to the rest of the American Tectaria is identified; (2) Tectariaceae s.l. , and the three families: Arthropteridaceae (Arthropteris), Pteridryaceae (Draconopteris , Malaifilix , Polydictyum , Pteridrys), and Tectariaceae s.s. (Hypoderris , Tectaria , and Triplophyllum), might have all originated in late Cretaceous; (3) only five intercontinental dispersals occurred in Pteridryaceae and Tectariaceae s.s. giving rise to their current intercontinental disjunction; (4) we provide the second evidence in ferns that a long-distance dispersal between Malesia and Americas during the Paleocene to Eocene led to the establishment/origin of a new genus (Draconopteris); and (5) diversification rate of each state of leaf dissection is different, and the lowest is in the simple-leaved taxa. Leaf-mining flies (Diptera: Agromyzidae) are a diverse clade of phytophagous Diptera known largely for their economic impact as leaf- or stem-miners on vegetable and ornamental plants. Higher-level phylogenetic relationships of Agromyzidae have remained uncertain because of challenges in sampling of both taxa and characters for morphology and PCR-based Sanger-era molecular systematics. Here, we used hundreds of orthologous single-copy nuclear loci obtained from anchored hybrid enrichment (AHE) to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships among the major lineages of leaf-mining flies. The resulting phylogenetic trees are highly congruent and well-supported, except for a few deep nodes, when using different molecular data types and phylogenetic methods. Based on divergence time dating using a relaxed clock model-based analysis, leaf-mining flies are shown to have diversified in multiple lineages since the early Paleocene, approximately 65 million years ago. Shorebirds (Charadriiformes) are a globally distributed clade of modern birds and, due to their ecological and morphological disparity, a frequent subject of comparative studies. While molecular phylogenies have been key to establishing the suprafamilial backbone of the charadriiform tree, a number of relationships at both deep and shallow taxonomic levels remain poorly resolved. The timescale of shorebird evolution also remains uncertain as a result of extensive disagreements among the published divergence dating studies, stemming largely from different choices of fossil calibrations. Here, we present the most comprehensive non-supertree phylogeny of shorebirds to date, based on a total-evidence dataset comprising 353 ingroup taxa (90% of all extant or recently extinct species), 27 loci (15 mitochondrial and 12 nuclear), and 69 morphological characters. We further clarify the timeline of charadriiform evolution by time-scaling this phylogeny using a set of 14 up-to-date and thoroughly vetted fossil calibrations. In addition, we assemble a taxonomically restricted 100-locus dataset specifically designed to resolve outstanding problems in higher-level charadriiform phylogeny. In terms of tree topology, our results are largely congruent with previous studies but indicate that some of the conflicts among earlier analyses reflect a genuine signal of pervasive gene tree discordance. Monophyly of the plovers (Charadriidae), the position of the ibisbill (Ibidorhyncha), and the relationships among the five subfamilies of the gulls (Laridae) could not be resolved even with greatly increased locus and taxon sampling. Moreover, several localized regions of uncertainty persist in shallower parts of the tree, including the interrelationships of the true auks (Alcinae) and anarhynchine plovers. Our node-dating and macroevolutionary rate analyses find support for a Paleocene origin of crown-group shorebirds, as well as exceptionally rapid recent radiations of Old World oystercatchers (Haematopodidae) and select genera of gulls. Our study underscores the challenges involved in estimating a comprehensively sampled and carefully calibrated time tree for a diverse avian clade, and highlights areas in need of further research.
