We investigated the influence of mental imagery expertise in 15 pen and paper role-players as an expert group compared to the gender-matched control group of computer role-players in the difficult Vandenberg and Kuse mental rotation task. In this task, the participants have to decide which two of four rotated figures match the target figure. The dependent measures were performance speed and accuracy. In our exploratory investigation, we further examined midline frontal theta band activation, parietal alpha band activation, and parietal alpha band asymmetry in EEG as indicator for the chosen rotation strategy. Additionally, we explored the gender influence on performance and EEG activation, although a very small female sample section was given. The expected gender difference concerning performance accuracy was negated by expertise in pen and paper role-playing women, while the gender-specific difference in performance speed was preserved. Moreover, gender differences concerning electro-cortical measures revealed differences in rotation strategy, with women using top-down strategies compared to men, who were using top-down strategies and active inhibition of associative cortical areas. These strategy uses were further moderated by expertise, with higher expertise leading to more pronounced activation patters, especially during successful performance. However, due to the very limited sample size, the findings of this explorative study have to be interpreted cautiously.

Investigating the research trends within a scientific domain by analyzing semantic information extracted from scientific journals has been a topic of interest in the natural language processing (NLP) field. A research trend evaluation is generally based on the time evolution of the term occurrence or the term topic, but it neglects an important aspect—research publication latency. The average time lag between the research and its publication may vary from one month to more than one year, and it is a characteristic that may have significant impact when assessing research trends, mainly for rapidly evolving scientific areas. To cope with this problem, the present paper is the first work that explicitly considers research publication latency as a parameter in the trend evaluation process. Consequently, we provide a new trend detection methodology that mixes auto-ARIMA prediction with Mann–Kendall trend evaluations. The experimental results in an electronic design automation case study prove the viability of our approach.

Paper waste in the mockups design with regular, irregular, and amorphous patterns is a critical problem in digital printing presses. Paper waste reduction directly impacts production costs, generating business and environmental benefits. This problem can be mapped to the two-dimensional irregular bin-packing problem. In this paper, an iterated local search algorithm using a novel neighborhood structure to detect overlaps between amorphous shapes is introduced. This algorithm is used to solve the paper waste problem, modeled as one 2D irregular bin-packing problem. The experimental results show that this approach works efficiently and effectively to detect and correct the overlaps between regular, irregular, and amorphous figures.

This short paper concerns the analysis of the M/M/k queueing system with customer abandonment. In this system, service managers provide a finite buffer space, which is a waiting area that prevents customers from abandoning the system. Abandonment of the system can occur from reneging (exiting from the queue while waiting), and/or balking (leaving the system without waiting). We derive an analytical expression to represent the impact of the buffer space capacity on the delay probability and the abandonment probability for a system with deferred abandonment. The result indicates the provision of the buffer space in a large system could only increase the delay probability while the abandonment probability remains unchanged. Despite the benevolent intentions of service managers, providing a buffer space may exacerbate the performance of larger systems.

This paper introduced the use of two new adsorbents, Akrosorb soda-lime and Bentonite clay, for refinery flare flue gas capture and storage. This study also developed a novel pilot plant model with 409.7149 kg/h capacity refinery flare emission capture with a novel adsorption column configuration using Akrosorb soda-lime and Bentonite clay adsorbents. The flare flue gas adsorption unit was designed, fabricated, test run, and commissioned. The adsorption column temperature is 28 ± 10 °C and has a pressure of 131.7 kPa. The novel plant RSM optimization result shows that 93.24% of CO2 and 62.18% of CO were absorbed, while 86.14% of NOx and 55.87% of HC were absorbed. The established optimum conditions of CO2, NOx, HC, and CO removal efficiency are 22 °C, 2 atm, and 60 min. The variation in flare gas emission could impact the removal efficiency of the plant. The results show the maximum adsorption ability or capacity of 314.30 mg/g, and 68.90 mg/g was reached at 60 min for Akrosorb soda-lime and molded Bentonite adsorbents. Therefore, the developed novel technology for CO2 and other GHG capture is technically feasible and friendly. The combined usage of both adsorbents will enhance the capture of GHG at a low cost compared to using Akrosorb alone as an adsorbent.

Resident combustion of solid fuel has been widely acknowledged as a high potential for pollutant reduction. However, there is a marked asymmetry between more pollutant emission and less burned volatiles of biomass and coal in the combustion process. To study the solid fuel optimum combustion form in a household stove, both the pollution reduction and energy efficient utilization of crop straws and coals were investigated. Taking the molding pressure and clay addition ratio as variable process conditions, the research of bio-coal briquette (made from the mixture of anthracite and biomass) was implemented in the range of 15~35 MP and 5~15%, respectively. Biomass and coal work complementarily for each other’s combustion property development. In particular, the pyrolysis gas produced by biomass low-temperature devolatilization is featured with low ignition point and is distributed in the bio-coal briquette. Its own combustion provides energy for anthracite particle combustion. Consequently, a positive effect was identified when bio-coal briquettes were used as residential fuel, and further improvement manifested in reducing more than 90% of particle matter (PM) and achieving about twice the thermal efficiencies (TEs) compared with the mass-weighted average values of coal briquettes and biomass briquettes. 88.8 ± 11.8%, 136.7 ± 13.7% and 81.4 ± 17.7% more TEs were provided by wheat straw–coal briquettes, rice straw–coal briquettes and maize straw–coal briquettes. 93.3 ± 3.1% (wheat straw–coal), 97.6 ± 0.2% (rice straw–coal) and 90.4 ± 2.2% (maize straw–coal) in terms of PM2.5 emission factors (EFs) was reduced. For bio-coal briquette, a 25 MPa and 10% addition were determined as the optimum molding pressure and clay addition ratio. Bio-coal briquettes with higher TEs and lower PM EFs will bring about substantial benefits for air quality promotion, human health and energy saving.

This study provides a systematic literature review of research in the field of teaching and learning mathematics through Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), Content-Based Instruction (CBI), and English Medium Instruction (EMI). The review aims to examine the most relevant literature with a focus on mathematics and CLIL, CBI, or EMI in Scopus and Web of Science per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) guidelines. Based on 151 sources, 52 papers were selected according to predefined selection criteria. The papers were analysed and coded according to the following categories: (1) geographical productivity, (2) diachronic productivity growth, (3) main objectives, (4) methodology, and research design, (5) variables and measurement instruments, (6) context and sample details, and (7) main findings. The results reveal that most of the research analysed has been carried out in the Asian continent, followed by Europe. The analysis of diachronic productivity shows that the study of the application of CLIL, CBI, and EMI programs in the teaching-learning process of mathematics has notably increased in recent years, especially in the last triennium (2020–2022). Regarding the objectives of the selected corpus, the majority aimed at teaching practices and learning processes, and outcomes in mathematics and language proficiency in CLIL, CBI, and/or EMI classrooms. The corpus analysed fits within one or more of the following categories: empirical, qualitative, descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional. The samples utilized in different studies differ significantly, both in terms of quantity –ranging from one person to 700– and in the educational level being studied, which would be primary, secondary, or tertiary education. The main variables studied in the corpus focus on mathematical competence, language proficiency, teaching practices, teacher training, science competence, and teachers’ perceptions. The most widely used instruments have been objective tests, such as questionnaires, together with standardized tests to measure some aspects related to mathematical competence and language proficiency. They are followed by an analysis of documents (academic records, teaching materials, official documents...), participant or non-participant observation, interviews, and video and audio recordings. In summary, in the scientific literature analysed, a positive or neutral view predominates on the effects of the CLIL, CBI, and EMI approaches on the learning of mathematics and the L2. This can be due to methodological issues fundamentally related to the methodology, research design, sample, and measurement instruments. Thus, we must highlight that some of the results from the selected papers must be interpreted with caution. Taking this factor into consideration, further comparative studies on a wider scale are required to examine thoroughly the effects of CLIL, CBI, and EMI on the teaching and learning of mathematics in an L2. Besides, it is important to study in greater depth the different levels of language acquisition since the research analysed shows that these have not been sufficiently addressed in the mathematical field of knowledge.

In this paper, we consider parallel-machine scheduling with release times and submodular penalties (P|rj,reject|Cmax+π(R)), in which each job can be accepted and processed on one of m identical parallel machines or rejected, but a penalty must paid if a job is rejected. Each job has a release time and a processing time, and the job can not be processed before its release time. The objective of P|rj,reject|Cmax+π(R) is to minimize the makespan of the accepted jobs plus the penalty of the rejected jobs, where the penalty is determined by a submodular function. This problem generalizes a multiprocessor scheduling problem with rejection, the parallel-machine scheduling with submodular penalties, and the single machine scheduling problem with release dates and submodular rejection penalties. In this paper, inspired by the primal-dual method, we present a combinatorial 2-approximation algorithm to P|rj,reject|Cmax+π(R). This ratio coincides with the best known ratio for the parallel-machine scheduling with submodular penalties and the single machine scheduling problem with release dates and submodular rejection penalties.

Swirling has a significant effect on the main characteristics of flow and can lead to its fundamental restructuring. On the flow axis, a stagnation point with zero velocity is possible, behind which a return flow zone is formed. The apparent instability leads to the formation of secondary vortex motions and can also be the cause of vortex breakdown. In the paper, a swirling flow with a velocity profile of the Batchelor vortex type has been studied on the basis of the linear hydrodynamic stability theory. An effective numerical method for solving the spectral problem has been developed. This method includes the asymptotic solutions at artificial and irregular singular points. The stability of flows was considered for the values of the Reynolds number in the range 10≤Re≤5×106. The calculations were carried out for the value of the azimuthal wavenumber parameter n=−1. As a result of the analysis of the solutions, the existence of up to eight simultaneously occurring unstable modes has been shown. The paper presents a classification of the detected modes. The critical parameters are calculated for each mode. For fixed values of the Reynolds numbers 60≤Re≤5000, the curves of neutral stability are plotted. Branching points of unstable modes are found. The maximum growth rates for each mode are determined. A new viscous instability mode is found. The performed calculations reveal the instability of the Batchelor vortex at large values of the swirl parameter for long-wave disturbances.

Accurate sky identification is one of the most important functions of an automated telescope mount. The more accurately the robotic telescope is navigated to the investigated part of the sky, the better the observations and discoveries made. In this paper, we present mathematical methods for accurate sky identification (celestial coordinates determination). They include the automatic selection of the reference stars, preliminary and full sky identification, as well as an interaction with international databases, which are a part of the astrometric calibration. All described methods help to receive accurately calculated astrometric data and use it for the positional calibration and better navigation of the automated telescope mount. The developed methods were successfully implemented in the Collection Light Technology (CoLiTec) software. Through its use, more than 1600 small solar system objects were discovered. It has been used in more than 700,000 observations and successful sky identifications, during which, five comets were discovered. Additionally, the accuracy indicators of the processing results of the CoLiTec software are provided in the paper, which shows benefits of the CoLiTec software and lower standard deviation of the sky identification in the case of low signal-to-noise ratios.

This paper presents a simplified model of the population migration problem, addressed to first-year engineering students in order to show them the use of linear algebra tools. The study consists of predicting the census in the city centre and in the suburbs, determining the city population equilibrium point, and making a sociological interpretation of population flows. This practical problem is part of the seminar “Applications of Linear Algebra in Engineering”, which is being held at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech (UPC). This seminar consists in the learning of linear algebra by the implementation of real applications where mathematical tools are required to resolve them. This paper presents an application of linear algebra to the population migration problem and analyses students’ appreciation through anonymous surveys and personal interviews. The surveys assessed students’ motivation towards the subject of linear algebra and their learning of mathematical concepts. Personal interviews were conducted for students in order to let them express in detail their opinion about the seminar. The results confirm that the introduction of real applications in the learning of mathematics increases students’ motivation and involvement, which implies an improvement in students’ performance in the first courses of STEM degrees. The present paper is devoted to studying the maps corresponding to the suborbital graphs for the normalizer ΓB(N) of Γ0(N) modulo N, where N denotes a positive integer. We reveal the complete structure of these maps, finding their vertices, edges, darts, and faces explicitly. The maps we investigated in the present paper were all regular maps of large genus except for some low values of N.

In this paper, we present a new modelling method to create 3D models. First, characteristic cross section curves are generated and approximated by generalized elliptic curves. Then, a vector-valued sixth-order partial differential equation is proposed, and its closed form solution is derived to create PDE surface patches from cross section curves where two adjacent PDE-surface patches are automatically stitched together. With the approach presented in this paper, C2 continuity between adjacent surface patches is well-maintained. Since surface creation of the model is transformed into the generation of cross sectional curves and few undetermined constants are required to describe cross sectional curves accurately, the proposed approach can save manual operations, reduce information storage, and generate 3D models quickly. This paper studies the solution procedure of a bus transit system with a rectangular service area that had been cited more than two hundred times. We will point out that they applied relations suitable for continuous variables, which are not held for a discrete variable and will result in invalid results. We provide our solution procedure to the same example proposed by the original paper to illustrate that their results are less accurate. Our findings will help researchers understand this kind of bus transit system.

In this paper, the Painlevé integrable property of the (1 + 1)-dimensional generalized Broer–Kaup (gBK) equations is first proven. Then, the Bäcklund transformations for the gBK equations are derived by using the Painlevé truncation. Based on a special case of the derived Bäcklund transformations, the gBK equations are linearized into the heat conduction equation. Inspired by the derived Bäcklund transformations, the gBK equations are reduced into the Burgers equation. Starting from the linear heat conduction equation, two forms of N-soliton solutions and rational solutions with a singularity condition of the gBK equations are constructed. In addition, the rational solutions with two singularity conditions of the gBK equation are obtained by considering the non-uniqueness and generality of a resonance function embedded into the Painlevé test. In order to understand the nonlinear dynamic evolution dominated by the gBK equations, some of the obtained exact solutions, including one-soliton solutions, two-soliton solutions, three-soliton solutions, and two pairs of rational solutions, are shown by three-dimensional images. This paper shows that when the Painlevé test deals with the coupled nonlinear equations, the highest negative power of the coupled variables should be comprehensively considered in the leading term analysis rather than the formal balance between the highest-order derivative term and the highest-order nonlinear term.

The video images captured at long range usually have low contrast floating objects of interest on a sea surface. A comparative experimental study of the statistical characteristics of reflections from floating objects and from the agitated sea surface showed the difference in the correlation and spectral characteristics of these reflections. The functioning of the recently proposed modified matched subspace detector (MMSD) is based on the separation of the observed data spectrum on two subspaces: relatively low and relatively high frequencies. In the literature the MMSD performance has been evaluated in generally and moreover using only a sea model (additive Gaussian background clutter). This paper extends the performance evaluating methodology for low contrast object detection and moreover using only the real sea dataset. This methodology assumes an object of low contrast if the mean and variance of the object and the surrounding background are the same. The paper assumes that the energy spectrum of the object and the sea are different. The paper investigates a scenario in which an artificially created model of a floating object with specified statistical parameters is placed on the surface of a real sea image. The paper compares the efficiency of the classical Matched Subspace Detector (MSD) and MMSD for detecting low-contrast objects on the sea surface. The article analyzes the dependence of the detection probability at a fixed false alarm probability on the difference between the statistical means and variances of a floating object and the surrounding sea.

The Coronavirus herd immunity optimizer (CHIO) is a new human-based optimization algorithm that imitates the herd immunity strategy to eliminate of the COVID-19 disease. In this paper, the coronavirus herd immunity optimizer (CHIO) is modified to tackle a discrete power scheduling problem in a smart home (PSPSH). PSPSH is a combinatorial optimization problem with NP-hard features. It is a highly constrained discrete scheduling problem concerned with assigning the operation time for smart home appliances based on a dynamic pricing scheme(s) and several other constraints. The primary objective when solving PSPSH is to maintain the stability of the power system by reducing the ratio between average and highest power demand (peak-to-average ratio (PAR)) and reducing electricity bill (EB) with considering the comfort level of users (UC). This paper modifies and adapts the CHIO algorithm to deal with such discrete optimization problems, particularly PSPSH. The adaptation and modification include embedding PSPSH problem-specific operators to CHIO operations to meet the discrete search space requirements. PSPSH is modeled as a multi-objective problem considering all objectives, including PAR, EB, and UC. The proposed method is examined using a dataset that contains 36 home appliances and seven consumption scenarios. The main CHIO parameters are tuned to find their best values. These best values are used to evaluate the proposed method by comparing its results with comparative five metaheuristic algorithms. The proposed method shows encouraging results and almost obtains the best results in all consumption scenarios.

This paper proposes a modification of the imperialist competitive algorithm to solve multi-objective optimization problems with hybrid methods (MOHMICA) based on a modification of the imperialist competitive algorithm with hybrid methods (HMICA). The rationale for this is that there is an obvious disadvantage of HMICA in that it can only solve single-objective optimization problems but cannot solve multi-objective optimization problems. In order to adapt to the characteristics of multi-objective optimization problems, this paper improves the establishment of the initial empires and colony allocation mechanism and empire competition in HMICA, and introduces an external archiving strategy. A total of 12 benchmark functions are calculated, including 10 bi-objective and 2 tri-objective benchmarks. Four metrics are used to verify the quality of MOHMICA. Then, a new comprehensive evaluation method is proposed, called “radar map method”, which could comprehensively evaluate the convergence and distribution performance of multi-objective optimization algorithm. It can be seen from the four coordinate axes of the radar maps that this is a symmetrical evaluation method. For this evaluation method, the larger the radar map area is, the better the calculation result of the algorithm. Using this new evaluation method, the algorithm proposed in this paper is compared with seven other high-quality algorithms. The radar map area of MOHMICA is at least 14.06% larger than that of other algorithms. Therefore, it is proven that MOHMICA has advantages as a whole.

In this paper we propose an approximation method for solving second kind Volterra integral equation systems by radial basis functions. It is based on the minimization of a suitable functional in a discrete space generated by compactly supported radial basis functions of Wendland type. We prove two convergence results, and we highlight this because most recent published papers in the literature do not include any. We present some numerical examples in order to show and justify the validity of the proposed method. Our proposed technique gives an acceptable accuracy with small use of the data, resulting also in a low computational cost.

Techniques and methods of linear optimization underwent a significant improvement in the 20th century which led to the development of reliable mixed integer linear programming (MILP) solvers. It would be useful if these solvers could handle mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems. Piecewise linear approximation (PLA) is one of most popular methods used to transform nonlinear problems into linear ones. This paper will introduce PLA with brief a background and literature review, followed by describing our contribution before presenting the results of computational experiments and our findings. The goals of this paper are (a) improving PLA models by using nonuniform domain partitioning, and (b) proposing an idea of applying PLA partially on MINLP problems, making them easier to handle. The computational experiments were done using quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) and MIQCQP and they showed that problems under PLA with nonuniform partition resulted in more accurate solutions and required less time compared to PLA with uniform partition.

Botnet is an urgent problem that will reduce the security and availability of the network. When the bot master launches attacks to certain victims, the infected users are awakened, and attacks start according to the commands from the bot master. Via Botnet, DDoS is an attack whose purpose is to paralyze the victim’s service. In all kinds of DDoS, SYN flood is still a problem that reduces security and availability. To enhance the security of the Internet, IDS is proposed to detect attacks and protect the server. In this paper, the concept of centroid-based classification is used to enhance performance of the framework. An anomaly-based IDS framework which combines K-means and KNN is proposed to detect SYN flood. Dimension reduction is designed to achieve visualization, and weights can adjust the occupancy ratio of each sub-feature. Therefore, this framework is also suitable for use on the modern symmetry or asymmetry architecture of information systems. With the detection by the framework proposed in this paper, the detection rate is 96.8 percent, the accuracy rate is 97.3 percent, and the false alarm rate is 1.37 percent.

Social networking sites (SNSs) are used widely, raising new issues in terms of privacy and disclosure. Although users are often concerned about their privacy, they often publish information on social networking sites willingly. Due to the growing number of users of social networking sites, substantial research has been conducted in recent years. In this paper, we conducted a systematic review of papers that included structural equations models (SEM), or other statistical models with privacy and disclosure constructs. A total of 98 such papers were found and included in the analysis. In this paper, we evaluated the presentation of results of the models containing privacy and disclosure constructs. We carried out an analysis of which background theories are used in such studies and have also found that the studies have not been carried out worldwide. Extending the research to other countries could help with better user awareness of the privacy and self-disclosure of users on SNSs.

This paper presents an alternative system called the axial-flux dual-stator toothless permanent magnet machine (AFDSTPMM) system for flywheel energy storage. This system lowers self-dissipation by producing less core loss than existing structures; a permanent magnet (PM) array is put forward to enhance the air–gap flux density of the symmetrical air gap on both sides. Moreover, its vertical stability is strengthened through the adoption of an axial-flux machine, so expensive active magnetic bearings can be replaced. The symmetry configuration of the AFDSTPMM system is shown in this paper. Then, several parts of the AFDSTPMM system are optimized thoroughly, including stator windings, number of pole pairs and the PM parameters. Further, the performance of the proposed PM array, including back-EMFs, air–gap flux density, average torque, torque ripple and over-load capacity, are compared with the Halbach PM array and spoke PM array, showing the superiority of proposed configuration. Finally, 3D simulations were made to testify for the 2D analyses.

(1) Background: In a recent paper discussing Newton’s third law in the framework of special relativity for charged bodies, it was suggested that one can construct a practical relativistic motor provided high enough charge and current densities are available. As on the macroscopic scale charge density is limited by the phenomena of dielectric breakdown, it was suggested to take advantage of the high charge densities which are available on the microscopic scale. (2) Methods: We use standard physical theories such as Maxwell electrodynamics and quantum mechanics, supplemented by tools from vector analysis and numerics. (3) Results: We show that a hydrogen atom either in the ground state or excited state will not produce a relativistic engine effect, but by breaking the symmetry or putting the electron in a wave packet state may produce relativistic motor effect. (4) Conclusions: A highly localized wave packet will produce a strong relativistic motor effect. The preliminary analysis of the current paper suggests new promising directions of research both theoretical and experimental.

Wildfires are complex natural events that cause significant environmental and property damage, as well as human losses, every year throughout the world. In order to aid in their management and mitigate their impact, efforts have been directed towards developing decision support systems that can predict wildfire propagation. Most of the available tools for wildfire spread prediction are based on the Rothermel model that, apart from being relatively complex and computing demanding, depends on several input parameters concerning the local fuels, wind or topography, which are difficult to obtain with a minimum resolution and degree of accuracy. These factors are leading causes for the deviations between the predicted fire propagation and the real fire propagation. In this sense, this paper conducts a literature review on optimization methodologies for wildfire spread prediction based on the use of evolutionary algorithms for input parameter set calibration. In the present literature review, it was observed that the current literature on wildfire spread prediction calibration is mostly focused on methodologies based on genetic algorithms (GAs). Inline with this trend, this paper presents an application of genetic algorithms for the calibration of a set of the Rothermel model’s input parameters, namely: surface-area-to-volume ratio, fuel bed depth, fuel moisture, and midflame wind speed. The GA was validated on 37 real datasets obtained through experimental prescribed fires in controlled conditions.

The problem of the dual synchronization of two different fractional-order chaotic systems with uncertain parameters is studied. This paper introduces a synchronization method in accordance with Lyapunov stability theory, and the adaptive controllers and adaptive laws are designed to realize the dual synchronization of fractional order chaotic systems. Finally, two numerical examples of unknown different fractional-order chaotic systems are also given to prove the accuracy of the theory in the paper, and the effectiveness and performance of the proposed adaptive dual synchronization strategy are verified by simulation.

This paper deals with the measurement of the compatibility in a local AHP-Group Decision Making context. Compatibility between two individuals or decision makers is understood as the property that reflects the proximity between their positions or preferences, usually measured by a distance function. An acceptable level of incompatibility between the individual and the group positions will favour the acceptance of the collective position by the individuals. To facilitate the compatibility measurement, the paper utilises four indicators based on log quadratic distances between matrices or vectors which can be employed in accordance with the information that is available from the individual decision makers and from the group. The indicators make it possible to measure compatibility in decision problems, regardless of how the collective position and the priorities are obtained. The paper also presents a theoretical framework and a general, semi-automatic procedure for reducing the incompatibility measured by the four indicators. Using relative variations, the procedure identifies and slightly modifies the judgement of the collective matrix that further improves the indicator. This process is undertaken without modifying the initial information provided by the individuals. A numerical example illustrates the application of the theoretical framework and the procedure.

This article belongs to the Special Issue Advances in Quantum Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning [Abstract] In this paper, we illustrate that inaccurate knowledge can be efficiently implemented in a quantum environment. For this purpose, we analyse the correlation between certainty factors and quantum probability. We first explore the certainty factors approach for inexact reasoning from a classical point of view. Next, we introduce some basic aspects of quantum computing, and we pay special attention to quantum rule-based systems. In this context, a specific use case was built: an inferential network for testing the behaviour of the certainty factors approach in a quantum environment. After the design and execution of the experiments, the corresponding analysis of the obtained results was performed in three different scenarios: (1) inaccuracy in declarative knowledge, or imprecision, (2) inaccuracy in procedural knowledge, or uncertainty, and (3) inaccuracy in both declarative and procedural knowledge. This paper, as stated in the conclusions, is intended to pave the way for future quantum implementations of well-established methods for handling inaccurate knowledge. In this paper we study the existence of a mild solution of a periodic boundary value problem for fractional quasilinear differential equations in a Hilbert spaces. We assume that a linear part in equations is a self-adjoint positive operator with dense domain in Hilbert space and a nonlinear part is a map obeying Carathéodory type conditions. We find the mild solution of this problem in the form of a series in a Hilbert space. In the space of continuous functions, we construct the corresponding resolving operator, and for it, by using Schauder theorem, we prove the existence of a fixed point. At the end of the paper, we give an example for a boundary value problem for a diffusion type equation.

The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster is a classic research object in genetics and systems biology. In the genetic analysis of flies, a routine task is to determine the offspring size and gender ratio in their populations. Currently, these estimates are made manually, which is a very time-consuming process. The counting and gender determination of flies can be automated by using image analysis with deep learning neural networks on mobile devices. We proposed an algorithm based on the YOLOv4-tiny network to identify Drosophila flies and determine their gender based on the protocol of taking pictures of insects on a white sheet of paper with a cell phone camera. Three strategies with different types of augmentation were used to train the network. The best performance (F1 = 0.838) was achieved using synthetic images with mosaic generation. Females gender determination is worse than that one of males. Among the factors that most strongly influencing the accuracy of fly gender recognition, the fly’s position on the paper was the most important. Increased light intensity and higher quality of the device cameras have a positive effect on the recognition accuracy. We implement our method in the FlyCounter Android app for mobile devices, which performs all the image processing steps using the device processors only. The time that the YOLOv4-tiny algorithm takes to process one image is less than 4 s.

This paper is supposed to form a keystone towards a new and alternative approach to Fourier analysis over LCA (locally compact Abelian) groups G. In an earlier paper the author has already shown that one can introduce convolution and the Fourier–Stieltjes transform on (M(G),∥·∥M), the space of bounded measures (viewed as a space of linear functionals) in an elementary fashion over Rd. Bounded uniform partitions of unity (BUPUs) are easily constructed in the Euclidean setting (by dilation). Moving on to general LCA groups, it becomes an interesting challenge to find ways to construct arbitrary fine BUPUs, ideally without the use of structure theory, the existence of a Haar measure and even Lebesgue integration. This article provides such a construction and demonstrates how it can be used in order to show that any so-called homogeneous Banach space(B,∥·∥B) on G, such as (Lp(G),∥·∥p), for 1≤p<∞, or the Fourier–Stieltjes algebra FM(G), and in particular any Segal algebra is a Banach convolution module over (M(G),∥·∥M) in a natural way. Via the Haar measure we can then identify L1(G),∥·∥1 with the closure (of the embedded version) of Cc(G), the space of continuous functions with compact support, in (M(G),∥·∥M), and show that these homogeneous Banach spaces are essentialL1(G)-modules. Thus, in particular, the approximate units act properly as one might expect and converge strongly to the identity operator. The approach is in the spirit of Hans Reiter, avoiding the use of structure theory for LCA groups and the usual techniques of vector-valued integration via duality. The ultimate (still distant) goal of this approach is to provide a new and elementary approach towards the (extended) Fourier transform in the setting of the so-called Banach–Gelfand triple(S0,L2,S0′)(G), based on the Segal algebra S0(G). This direction will be pursued in subsequent papers.

The management control system in an industry is managerial, directional, hindrance, and cohesive action in order to cohere and regulate various branches and sub-branches. In fact, it is a system that supports the real state of matters in the right way. This method is intended at assuring that the purposes and activities carried out have the desired outcomes and eventually lead to the objects and purposes of the company. In this matter, the financial and non-financial management control system is essential both when it comes to strategy community; Consequently, in this paper, the management control system is classified into financial and non-financial categories because such analysis gives a chance to get a broad assessment of a management control system relationship in organizations. In this paper, we evaluate the relationship between business strategy and management control system and their influences on financial performance measurement of a manufacturer (a case study of Maral Co.) with the use of Merchant’s theory. Furthermore, In this case, a decision-making strategy centered on the FMEA is used to identify and prioritize risk factors financial of the control system in companies. Nevertheless, because this strategy has some significant limitations, this research has presented a decision-making approach depending on Z-number theory. For tackle, some of the RPN score’s drawbacks, the suggested decision-making methodology combines the Z-SWARA and Z-WASPAS techniques with the FMEA method. The findings reveal that in the non-financial management control system element, customer satisfaction, and in the financial component, cost standards are at the largest level of weight. Furthermore, the strategic planning factor with a rate of 2.95 and the deviation analysis factor with a rate of 2.87 is at the lowest level, respectively. In sum, market or industry changes are the primary cause of risk in businesses, according to FMEA methodology and the opinions of three professionals.

Based on the Szirtes’ modern dimensional analysis (MDA), the authors apply the theory to a real structure in order to validate by experimental measurements its applicability. After a presentation of the basic elements of the model law (ML), deduced for two relevant cases, the authors conceived the set of prototypes and models, based on the case of an actual construction pillar, physically performed at scales of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:4. The combination of these structural elements, made at different scales, resulted in three sets of prototypes and models. In this paper, taking into consideration the ML for two relevant cases, the following are presented: the original test stand of these structural elements; block diagram of the original electronic heating and control system; the basic considerations regarding the particularity of this heating system from the point of view of heat transfer; measurement data, obtained for both nonthermally protected elements and for those protected with layers of intumescent paints. In the last part of the paper, the values obtained by rigorous direct measurements with those offered by the ML on the elements considered as prototypes and models are compared. Almost identical values were obtained from the direct measurements with those provided by the ML, thus resulting in the validation of these laws. The same thermal regimes were applied to all these structural elements, with registration of every parameter related to these thermal regimes. Depending on the role of a structural element within a certain set (prototype-model), some of the measurement data were considered as data acquired directly through measurements, and others served as reference elements for those for which we had to obtain through the model law. In the last part of the paper, the sizes obtained by rigorous direct measurements are compared with those offered by the model law on the elements considered as prototypes and models. Identical practical values of the quantities were obtained from the direct measurements with those provided by the model law, thus resulting in the validation of these laws.

Contemporary literature continues to foster discussion whether financial development is important for economic growth. In the clash of theoretical arguments, the prevailing idea is that finance exerts a direct positive influence on GDP growth. However, the presence of theoretical counterarguments and contradictory results of empirical studies suggest that scientists, in search of an answer about the direction and power of the net effect, should develop methods of empirical analysis, and the very mystery of the relationship between finance and growth will finally be solved exclusively empirically. In this paper, the authors contribute to the development of the ‘finance-growth’ literature by answering some existing questions concerning the transmission channels from finance to growth, relying on more recent data compared to already conducted studies. We use panel data covering the period 1995 to 2019 for 168 countries. In addition, the paper touches on the problem of studying the exogenous conditions of such channels, considering the assumption that among these conditions there may be those that hinder the impact of financial deepening on economic growth. Our focus is on monetary conditions, and in the empirical part of the study, we touch upon the problem of the influence of price stability on the operation of these transmission channels. The methods of the conducted study are based on the dynamic panel data analysis techniques (System GMM). The novelty of this paper lies in the development of the modern theory of the financial sector transmission mechanism in the economic growth context. The main result of the study is that productivity channel is the most reliable transmission channel of financial deepening to economic growth. Furthermore, the effectiveness of this channel remains virtually unaffected by inflation. The channel of capital accumulation should be considered less reliable (in terms of statistical reliability of estimates obtained), but it has turned out to be a more economically significant transmission channel. This channel is sensitive to the inflation factor in certain categories of countries. Finally, as follows from the estimates gained, the non-linearity of the “finance-growth” relationship can be explained by the non-linearity of the variable responsible for the capital accumulation channel.

Image segmentation technology is dedicated to the segmentation of intensity inhomogeneous at present. In this paper, we propose a new method that incorporates fractional varying-order differential and local fitting energy to construct a new variational level set active contour model. The energy functions in this paper mainly include three parts: the local term, the regular term and the penalty term. The local term combined with fractional varying-order differential can obtain more details of the image. The regular term is used to regularize the image contour length. The penalty term is used to keep the evolution curve smooth. True positive (TP) rate, false positive (FP) rate, precision (P) rate, Jaccard similarity coefficient (JSC), and Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) are employed as the comparative measures for the segmentation results. Experimental results for both synthetic and real images show that our method has more accurate segmentation results than other models, and it is robust to intensity inhomogeneous or noises.

Considering transient processes where liquid/solid phase change occurs, this paper focuses on the associated modeling and numerical treatment in the frame of “Computational Fluid Dynamics” simulations. While being of importance in many industrial applications involving solidification and melting of mixed materials, including power and manufacturing engineering, the first application of this work pertains to the analysis of severe accidents in a nuclear reactor. Indeed, in this context, the molten core materials (a.k.a. corium) can form a high-temperature multiphase liquid pool at the boundary of which fusion and solidification phenomena are of prime importance. In this context, even if materials at play are treated as pure components, it is mandatory to distinguish two different phase change temperatures with a solid fusion temperature and a liquid solidification temperature. Accordingly, in the frame of a sharp interface representation, the paper introduces non-classical heterogeneous conditions at the liquid/solid boundary in such a way that both moving interface (through Stefan conditions associated with fusion or solidification) and static interface (imposing heat flux continuity) are supported at the same time on different spatial locations along this boundary. Within a monolithic resolution of Navier–Stokes and heat conduction equations, this interface is explicitly tracked with combined Front-Tracking and VOF methods. In order to ensure zero velocity in the solid phase, an Immersed Boundary Method and a direct forcing penalization are also introduced. The main relevant features of this combination of numerical methods are discussed along with their implementation in the TrioCFD code taking advantage of the pre-existing code capabilities. Numerical simulations including both verification tests and a case of interest for our industrial application are reported and demonstrate the applicability of the proposed triptych model+methods+code to treat such problems. The numerical tools and the simulation code developed in this work could be used not only in the several accident context but also to simulate melting, solidification and fusion processes occurring in aerodynamics, hypersonic reentry vehicles and laser applications to cite but a few.

This paper provides a brief overview of modern applications of nonbinary logic models, where the design of heterogeneous computing systems with small computing units based on three-valued logic produces a mathematically better and more effective solution compared to binary models. For application, it is necessary to implement circuits composed of chipsets, the operation of which is based on three-valued logic. To be able to implement such schemes, a fundamentally important theoretical problem must be solved: the problem of completeness of classes of functions of three-valued logic. From a practical point of view, the completeness of the class of such functions ensures that circuits with the desired operations can be produced from an arbitrary (finite) set of chipsets. In this paper, the closure operator on the set of functions of three-valued logic that strengthens the usual substitution operator is considered. It is shown that it is possible to recover the sublattice of closed classes in the general case of closure of functions with respect to the classical superposition operator. The problem of the lattice of closed classes for the class of functions T2 preserving two is considered. The closure operators R1 for the functions that differ only by dummy variables are considered equivalent. This operator is withiin the scope of interest of this paper. A lattice is constructed for closed subclasses in T2={f|f(2,…,2)=2}, a class of functions preserving two.

At present, the study concerning pricing variance swaps under CIR the (Cox–Ingersoll–Ross)–Heston hybrid model has achieved many results; however, due to the instantaneous interest rate and instantaneous volatility in the model following the Feller square root process, only a semi-closed solution can be obtained by solving PDEs. This paper presents a simplified approach to price log-return variance swaps under the CIR–Heston hybrid model. Compared with Cao’s work, an important feature of our approach is that there is no need to solve complex PDEs; a closed-form solution is obtained by applying the martingale theory and Ito^’s lemma. The closed-form solution is significant because it can achieve accurate pricing and no longer takes time to adjust parameters by numerical method. Another significant feature of this paper is that the impact of sampling frequency on pricing formula is analyzed; then the closed-form solution can be extended to an approximate formula. The price curves of the closed-form solution and the approximate solution are presented by numerical simulation. When the sampling frequency is large enough, the two curves almost coincide, which means that our approximate formula is simple and reliable.

The urban public transportation system is an important part of urban transportation, and the rationality of public transportation routes layout plays a vital role in the transportation of the city. Improving the efficiency of public transportation can have a positive impact on the operation of the public transportation system. This paper uses complex network theory and the symmetry of the up and down bus routes and stations to establish an urban public transit network model and calculates the probability of passengers choosing different routes in the public transit network according to passenger travel impedance. Based on passenger travel impedance, travel path probability and passenger travel demand, the links are weighed, and the network efficiency calculation method is improved. Finally, the public transit network optimization model was established with network efficiency as the objective function and solved by the ant colony algorithm. In order to verify the effectiveness of the model and the solution method, this paper selects areas in Nanguan District of Changchun City for example analysis. The result shows that the efficiency of the optimized network is 8.5% higher than that of the original network, which proves the feasibility of the optimized model and solution method.

In 2008, Hedetniemi et al. introduced (1,k)-domination in graphs. The research on this concept was extended to the problem of existence of independent (1,k)-dominating sets, which is an NP-complete problem. In this paper, we consider independent (1,1)- and (1,2)-dominating sets, which we name as (1,1)-kernels and (1,2)-kernels, respectively. We obtain a complete characterization of generalized corona of graphs and G-join of graphs, which have such kernels. Moreover, we determine some graph parameters related to these sets, such as the number and the cardinality. In general, graph products considered in this paper have an asymmetric structure, contrary to other many well-known graph products (Cartesian, tensor, strong).

The redundancy of functional blocks and critical assemblies in radio-electronic equipment is among the most widely used techniques for increasing reliability. Complex redundant systems raise the problem of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Ignoring EMC requirements can lead to partial or complete REE failures. In this paper, the authors analyze a noise-protective electrical circuit with triple modal reservation (a promising type of cold redundancy). A multilayer stripline is investigated, the conductors of which are symmetrically arranged relative to two planes. On account of the strong electromagnetic coupling, this protective circuit can decompose dangerous ultra-wideband (UWB) interference received at the input of the primary or redundant circuits into unipolar pulses of lower amplitude. Using this approach, due to the symmetry of the conductors, equal decomposition efficiency could be achieved. However, the effect of UWB interference at the input of one of the conductors produces bipolar pulses at the output of the other conductors. In this paper, the authors evaluate the dangers of unipolar and bipolar decomposed pulses and use modal analysis to mathematically determine the polarities and amplitudes of the decomposed pulses at all output nodes for a pseudo-matched structure. By using the quasistatic approach with and without losses, the time responses to a trapezoidal pulse with a total duration of 60 ps, which simulates UWB interference, are obtained. To confirm the results of modal analysis and quasistatic simulation, an experimental study is performed. Using a stroboscopic oscilloscope DSA 8300, the authors obtained a transient response to a step excitation. Then, taking the derivative, the response to a trapezoidal pulse with a total duration of 140 ps was obtained. To analyze the criticality of the decomposed pulses, N-norms are used. In the general case, it is shown that the UWB interference is decomposed into four pulses of lower amplitude. At the same time, the value of each N-norm indicates its significant attenuation. For example, the amplitude of the UWB pulse acting on the input of the reserved conductor decreases by 10.31–8.93 times. Such results numerically demonstrate the high efficiency of the suggested approach when it comes to protecting equipment against UWB interference. It is also shown that the probability of dielectric breakdown and damage to electronic components in redundant circuits is lower than in a primary circuit. This is due to the fact that the value of N3 in the redundant circuit is 2.38 times less than in the primary circuit. However, the results demonstrate that arcing is highly probable both in primary and redundant circuits. Finally, aspects of symmetry/asymmetry in the problem under investigation are emphasized.

Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods have rapidly developed and have been applied to many areas for decision making in engineering. Apart from that, the process to select fault-diagnosis sensor for Fuel Cell Stack system in various options is a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) issue. However, in light of the choosing of fault diagnosis sensors, there is no MCDM analysis, and Fuel Cell Stack companies also urgently need a solution. Therefore, in this paper, we will use MCDM methods to analysis the fault-diagnosis sensor selection problem for the first time. The main contribution of this paper is to proposed a fault-diagnosis sensor selection methodology, which combines the rank reversal resisted AHP and TOPSIS and supports Fuel Cell Stack companies to select the optimal fault-diagnosis sensors. Apart from that, through the analysis, among all sensor alternatives, the acquisition of the optimal solution can be regarded as solving the symmetric or asymmetric problem of the optimal solution, which just maps to the TOPSIS method. Therefore, after apply the proposed fault-diagnosis sensor selection methodology, the Fuel Cell Stack system fault-diagnosis process will be more efficient, economical, and safe.

This paper proposes a new multi-objective bi-level programming model for the ring road bus lines and fare design problems. The proposed model consists of two layers: the traffic management operator and travelers. In the upper level, we propose a multi-objective bus lines and fares optimization model in which the operator’s profit and travelers’ utility are set as objective functions. In the lower level, evolutionary multi agent model of travelers’ bounded rational reinforcement learning with social interaction is introduced. A solution algorithm for the multi-objective bi-level programming is developed on the basis of the equalization algorithm of OD matrix. A numerical example based on a real case was conducted to verify the proposed models and solution algorithm. The computational results indicated that travel choice models with different degrees of rationality significantly changed the optimization results of bus lines and the differentiated fares; furthermore, the multi-objective bi-level programming in this paper can generate the solution to reduce the maximum section flow, increase the profit, and reduce travelers’ generalized travel cost.

This paper is devoted to the identification of the parameters of discrete fractional systems with errors in variables. Estimates of the parameters of such systems can be obtained using generalized total least squares (GTLS). A GTLS problem can be reduced to a total least squares (TLS) problem. A total least squares problem is often ill-conditioned. To solve a TLS problem, a classical algorithm based on finding the right singular vector or an algorithm based on an augmented system of equations with complex coefficients can be applied. In this paper, a new augmented system of equations with real coefficients is proposed to solve TLS problems. A symmetrical augmented system of equations was applied to the parameter identification of discrete fractional systems. The simulation results showed that the use of the proposed symmetrical augmented system of equations can shorten the time for solving such problems. It was also shown that the proposed system can have a smaller condition number.

Most existing Siamese trackers mainly use a pre-trained convolutional neural network to extract target features. However, due to the weak discrimination of the target and background information of pre-trained depth features, the performance of the Siamese tracker can be significantly degraded when facing similar targets or changes in target appearance. This paper proposes a multi-channel-aware and adaptive hierarchical deep features module to enhance the discriminative ability of the tracker. Firstly, through the multi-channel-aware deep features module, the importance values of feature channels are obtained from both the target details and overall information, to identify more important feature channels. Secondly, by introducing the adaptive hierarchical deep features module, the importance of each feature layer can be determined according to the response value of each frame, so that the hierarchical features can be integrated to represent the target, which can better adapt to changes in the appearance of the target. Finally, the proposed two modules are integrated into the Siamese framework for target tracking. The Siamese network used in this paper is a two-input branch symmetric neural network with two input branches, and they share the same weights, which are widely used in the field of target tracking. Experiments on some Benchmarks show that the proposed Siamese tracker has several points of improvement compared to the baseline tracker.

According to the Frenet equations of the null curves in semi-Euclidean 4-space, the existence conditions and the geometrical characterizations of the Bertrand curves of the null curves are given in this paper. The examples and the graphs of the Bertrand pairs with two different conditions are also given in order to supplement the conclusion of this paper more intuitively.

This paper mainly focuses on some notions of the lightlike rectifying curves and the centrodes in Minkowski 3-space. Some geometrical characteristics of the three types of lightlike curves are obtained. In addition, we obtain the conditions of the centrodes of the lightlike curves are the lightlike rectifying curves. Meanwhile, a detailed analysis between the N-type lightlike slant helices and the centrodes of lightlike curves is provided in this paper. We give the projections of the lightlike rectifying curves to the timelike planes.

Automatic segmentation of intracranial brain tumors in three-dimensional (3D) image series is critical in screening and diagnosing related diseases. However, there are various challenges in intracranial brain tumor images: (1) Multiple brain tumor categories hold particular pathological features. (2) It is a thorny issue to locate and discern brain tumors from other non-brain regions due to their complicated structure. (3) Traditional segmentation requires a noticeable difference in the brightness of the interest target relative to the background. (4) Brain tumor magnetic resonance images (MRI) have blurred boundaries, similar gray values, and low image contrast. (5) Image information details would be dropped while suppressing noise. Existing methods and algorithms do not perform satisfactorily in overcoming these obstacles mentioned above. Most of them share an inadequate accuracy in brain tumor segmentation. Considering that the image segmentation task is a symmetric process in which downsampling and upsampling are performed sequentially, this paper proposes a segmentation algorithm based on U-Net++, aiming to address the aforementioned problems. This paper uses the BraTS 2018 dataset, which contains MR images of 245 patients. We suggest the generative mask sub-network, which can generate feature maps. This paper also uses the BiCubic interpolation method for upsampling to obtain segmentation results different from U-Net++. Subsequently, pixel-weighted fusion is adopted to fuse the two segmentation results, thereby, improving the robustness and segmentation performance of the model. At the same time, we propose an auto pruning mechanism in terms of the architectural features of U-Net++ itself. This mechanism deactivates the sub-network by zeroing the input. It also automatically prunes GenU-Net++ during the inference process, increasing the inference speed and improving the network performance by preventing overfitting. Our algorithm’s PA, MIoU, P, and R are tested on the validation dataset, reaching 0.9737, 0.9745, 0.9646, and 0.9527, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model outperformed the contrast models. Additionally, we encapsulate the model and develop a corresponding application based on the MacOS platform to make the model further applicable.

In this paper, targeting efficient authentication and key agreement in an IoT environment, we propose an Elliptic Curve Cryptography-(ECC) based lightweight authentication protocol called BCmECC which relies on a public blockchain to validate the users’ public key to provide desired security. We evaluate the security of the proposed protocol heuristically and validate it formally, which demonstratse the high level of the security. For the formal verification we used the widely accepted formal methods, i.e., BAN logic and the Scyther tool. In this paper we also analyse the security of recently proposed blockchain-based authentication protocols and show that this protocol does not provide the desired security against known session-specific temporary information attacks in which the adversary has access to the session’s ephemeral values and aims to retrieve the shared session key. In addition, the protocol lacks forward secrecy, in which an adversary with access to the server’s long-term secret key can retrieve the previous session keys, assuming that the adversary has already eavesdropped the transferred messages over a public channel in the target session. The proposed attacks are very efficient and their success probability is ‘1’, while the time complexity of each attack could be negligible. Besides, we show that BCmECC is secure against such attacks.

In comparison with other respiratory viruses, the current COVID-19 pandemic’s rapid seizing the world can be attributed to indirect (contact) way of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 virus in addition to the regular airborne way. A significant part of indirect transmission is made through cash bank notes. SARS-CoV-2 remains on cash paper money for period around four times larger than influenza A virus and is absorbed by cash notes two and a half times more effectively than influenza A (our model). During the pandemic, cryptocurrencies have gained attractiveness as an “epidemiologically safe” means of transactions. On the basis of the authors’ gallop polls performed online with social networks users in 44 countries in 2020–2021 (the total number of clear responses after the set repair 32,115), around 14.7% of surveyed participants engaged in cryptocurrency-based transactions during the pandemic. This may be one of the reasons of significant rise of cryptocurrencies rates since mid-March 2020 till the end of 2021. The paper discusses the reasons for cryptocurrency attractiveness during the COVID-19 pandemic. Among them, there are fear of SARS-CoV-2 spread via cash contacts and the ability of the general population to mine cryptocurrencies. The article also provides a breakdown of the polled audience profile to determine the nationalities that have maximal level of trust to saving and transacting money as cryptocurrencies.
