Objective: Several studies have demonstrated a significant association between the presence of the ear lobe crease (ELC) and cardiovascular disease. Advanced glycation end‐products (AGEs) can affect the structures and functions of proteins and contribute to the development of diabetic complications. However, few studies have reported the relationship between AGEs and ELC. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation of skin autofluorescence (SAF)‐AGEage (SAF‐AGEs × age/100) with ELC. Methods: This cross‐sectional study enrolled 6500 eligible participants from two communities in Beijing. Skin autofluorescence (SAF) was used to measure skin AGEs (SAF‐AGEs). SAF‐AGEage was defined as AGEs × age/100. Binary logistic regression analysis and linear regression analysis nested in logistic models were applied to test outcomes. Results: The overall prevalence of ELC with an average age of 62.7 years participants was 57.1% (n = 3714). Age, fasting blood glucose, systolic blood pressure, and lipoprotein cholesterol were all greater in participants with ELC. ELC‐positive participants had higher prevalence of coronary heart disease. Logistic analysis showed a significantly positive relationship between quartiles of SAF‐AGEage and ELC (odds ratio [OR] 1.526, 95% CI 1.324–1.759; OR 2.072, CI 1.791–2.396; and OR 2.983, CI 2.551–3.489) for the multivariate‐adjusted models, respectively. Stratified research revealed that those with a history of diabetes, hypertension, or coronary heart disease experienced the connection between SAF‐AGEage and ELC. Conclusion: ELC is associated with coronary heart disease, and the SAF‐AGE has a potential role in ELC development in elder people. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The optimal adiposity index that is strongly associated with hypertension or prehypertension remains inconclusive in Chinese population. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) and hypertension and prehypertension, as well as to compare the discriminative power of CVAI, visceral adiposity index (VAI), body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist to height ratio (WHtR), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) with hypertension and prehypertension in Chinese general population. Patients and Methods: A total of 34732 participants from REACTION study were recruited. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to detect the association between adiposity indices (CVAI, VAI, BMI, WC, WHtR, WHR, LDL-C) and hypertension and prehypertension. Results: Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that compared with other obesity indices, CVAI remained significantly associated with hypertension and prehypertension (Hypertension: odds ratio (OR) 3.475, 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.158-3.824, p<0.001 in total subjects; OR 2.762, 95% CI 2.369–3.221, p<0.001 in men; OR 3.935, 95% CI 3.465–4.469, p<0.001 in women, Prehypertension: OR 2.747, 95% CI 2.460-3.068, p<0.001 in total subjects; OR 2.605, 95% CI 2.176–3.119, p<0.001 in men; OR 2.854, 95% CI 2.465–3.304, p<0.001 in women).In a stratified analysis, CVAI was significantly associated with hypertension and prehypertension at any level of blood glucose, age or estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR). Conclusion: CVAI is significantly associated with hypertension and prehypertension. CVAI shows the superior discriminative ability for hypertension and prehypertension compared with VAI, BMI, WC, WHtR, WHR and LDL-C in Chinese general population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and objective: Mild autonomous cortisol secretion (MACS) presents with a marked female preponderance, but whether the sex difference in its distribution has any relevance to the presentation and outcome of the disease is unknown. The aim of this study was therefore to compare biochemical indices of hypercortisolism and impaired glucose metabolism between male and female patients with MACS. Method: We enrolled a total of 98 patients with autonomous/possible autonomous cortisol secretion in our study, and indices of hypercortisolism and glucose metabolism were collected and compared between the male and female patients. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between sex and cortisol-secretory ability, as well as between the latter and glucose metabolism. In addition, we conducted further stratified analyses according to the degree of autonomous cortisol secretion and menopausal status. Results: Cortisol levels at 00:00 and 08:00 h after a 1-mg dexamethasone suppression test (DST) and low-dose DST were significantly higher in female than in male MACS patients, and the inhibition rate of 1-mg DST was lower in the women than in the men. This significant difference still remained after adjusting for age, BMI, and the course of the disease. Logistic regression analysis revealed a significant association between autonomous cortisol secretion and fasting C-peptide, as well as with the C-peptide-to-glucose ratio in females relative to male patients. In addition, stratified analyses indicated that this association was observed only among women with autonomous cortisol secretion and who were premenopausal. Conclusion: The level of autonomic cortisol secretion in female patients with MACS was higher than in male patients, and the association between autonomous cortisol secretory ability and glucose homeostasis was only noted in patients with autonomous cortisol secretion and in premenopausal women. Aims: The aims of this study were to evaluate the associations of metabolic abnormalities with incident diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and to explore whether dyslipidaemia, particularly high fasting triglyceride (TG), was associated with the development of DKD. Methods: In total, 11 142 patients with new‐onset type 2 diabetes with baseline estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR) ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2 were followed up during 2011‐2016. Incident DKD was defined as eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 at follow‐up. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to explore the relationship of metabolic abnormalities at baseline and at follow‐up with risks of DKD. High TG was defined by TG ≥1.70 mmol/L. Low high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL‐c) was defined by HDL‐c <1.0 mmol/L for men or <1.3 mmol/L for women. Results: Participants who developed DKD had higher levels of waist circumference and systolic blood pressure, and lower levels of HDL‐c at both baseline and follow‐up visits. The DKD group also had higher levels of post‐load plasma glucose and TG at follow‐up. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that both high TG at baseline [odds ratio (OR) = 1.37, p =.012) and high TG at follow‐up (OR = 1.71, p <.001) were significantly associated with increased risks of DKD. Patients with high TG levels at both baseline and follow‐up had higher risk of DKD compared with constantly normal TG (OR = 1.65, p <.001) after adjustment for covariates. Conclusions: In a large population of patients with new‐onset type 2 diabetes, a high TG level was an independent risk factor for the development of DKD. Millions of people are afflicted by depression, a highly prevalent mental illness with increased morbidity and mortality. Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are potential risk factors for depression. We aimed to investigate the correlation of AGEs with depressive symptoms and the severity of depressive symptoms. This study was nested in the prospective REACTION (Risk Evaluation of cAncers in Chinese diabeTic Individuals) study and included 4420 eligible participants. skin autofluorescence (SAF) was used to measure skin AGEs. Depressive symptoms were evaluated by the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association of AGEs with depressive symptoms and the severity of depressive symptoms. Logistic analysis showed a significantly positive relationship between quartiles of SAF-AGEs and the risk of depressive symptoms with the OR [95% confidence interval (CI), p value] of 1.24 (95% CI: 1.03–1.50, p = 0.022), 1.39 (95% CI: 1.15–1.68, p = 0.001) and 1.57 (95% CI: 1.28–1.91, p < 0.001) for multivariable-adjusted model respectively. And SAF-AGEs were associated with the severity of depressive symptoms with the multivariable-adjusted OR (95% CI, p value) of 1.06 (95% CI:0.79–1.43, p = 0.681), 1.47 (95% CI: 1.08–1.99, p = 0.014), and 1.54 (95% CI: 1.12–2.11, p = 0.008) respectively. Stratified analyses showed that SAF-AGEs were significantly associated with the severity of depressive symptoms only in females, overweight people, individuals with hypertension, and those without diabetes and insomnia. The present study showed that a higher SAF-AGEs level was associated with depressive symptoms and the severity of depressive symptoms. • A higher SAF-AGEs level was associated with depressive symptoms in Chinese population. • SAF-AGEs was related to the severity of depressive symptoms. • There is a threshold value of SAF-AGEs, below which a lower prevalence of moderate to severe depressive symptoms was seen.
