Recently, the incidence of chronic diabetic wounds increases continuously, and the existing clinical treatment is less effective. Thus, it is an urgent need to solve these problems for better clinical treatment effects. Herein, we prepared a brand-new tailored recombinant human collagen type III (rhCol III) and constructed a multifunctional microenvironment-responsive hydrogel carrier based on multifunctional antibacterial nanoparticles (PDA@Ag NPs) and our tailored rhCol III. The multifunctional smart hydrogel disintegrated quickly at the chronic diabetic wound sites and achieved the programed on-demand release of different therapeutic substances. The first released PDA@Ag NPs showed great antibacterial properties against S. aureus and E. coli . They could kill bacteria rapidly, and also showed antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects at the wound site. The subsequent release of our tailored rhCol III could promote the proliferation and migration of mouse fibroblasts and endothelial cells during the proliferation and remodeling process of wound healing. Relevant results showed that the multifunctional smart hydrogel could promote the expression levels of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), decrease the inflammatory response, accelerate the deposition of collagen and increase cell proliferation and angiogenesis, thereby speeding up the healing of infected chronic wounds. In a word, the hydrogel, which took into consideration the complex microenvironment at the wound site and multi-stage healing process, could achieve programmed and responsive release of different therapeutic substances to meet the treatment needs in different wound healing stages. More importantly, our work illustrated the great application potential of our brand-new rhCol III in promoting chronic wound repair and regeneration.

Although diverse uranium (U) adsorbents have been explored, it is still a great challenge for high-efficient uranium extraction form seawater. Herein a wood-mimetic oriented porous Ti3C2Tx-MXene/gelatin hydrogel (MGH) has been explored through growing directional ice crystals cooled by liquid nitrogen and subsequently forming pores by freeze-dry (Ice-template) method, for ultrafast and high-efficient U-adsorption from seawater with great enhancement by both electric field and sunlight. Different from disperse Ti3C2Tx-MXene powder, this MGH not only can be easily utilized but also can own ultrahigh specific surface area for high-efficient U-adsorption. The U-adsorbing capacity of this MGH (10 mg) can reach 4.17 mg·g−1 after only 1 week in 100 kg of seawater, which is outstanding in existing adsorbents. Furthermore, on the positive pole of 0.4 V direct current source or under 1-sun irradiation, the U-adsorbing capacity of the MGH can increase by 57.11% and 13.57%, respectively. Most importantly, the U-adsorption of this hydrogel can be greatly enhanced by simultaneously using the above two methods, which can increase the U-adsorbing capacity by 79.95% reaching 7.51 mg·g−1. This work provides a new biomimetic porous MXene-based hydrogel for electric field/sunlight bi-enhanced high-efficient U-extraction from seawater, which will inspire new strategy to design novel U-adsorbents and systems.

Uranium extraction from seawater has attracted worldwide attention due to the massive reserves of uranium. Due to the straightforward synthesis and strong affinity toward uranyl ions (UO22+), the amidoxime group shows promise for use in highly efficient uranium capture. However, the low mass transfer efficiency within traditional amidoxime‐based adsorbents severely limits the adsorption rate and the utilization of adsorption sites. In this work, a macroporous polyamidoxime (PAO) hydrogel is prepared by yeast‐based biological foaming combined with ice crystal dispersion that effectively maintained the yeast activity. The yeast‐raised PAO (Y‐PAO) adsorbent has numerous bubble‐like holes with an average pore diameter >100 µm. These macropores connected with the intrinsic micropores of PAO to construct efficient diffusion channels for UO22+ provided fast mass transporting channels, leading to the sufficient exposure of hidden binding sites. The maximum adsorption capacity of Y‐PAO membrane reached 10.07 mg‐U/g‐ads, ≈1.54 times higher than that of the control sample. It took only eight days for Y‐PAO to reach the saturation adsorption capacity of the control PAO (6.47 mg‐U/g‐ads, 28 days). Meanwhile, Y‐PAO possessed excellent ion selectivity, good reusability, and low cost. The extraction of uranium from seawater is vital to meet the increase demands of uranium resource for the nuclear energy industry, while it is severe hazarded by the marine fouling, including both the biofouling and abiotic fouling. Previous reports only focused on the control of biofouling and rare attention is paid to the abiotic fouling. However, the abiotic fouling is the fundamental of the biofouling. Herein, a charged balanced hydrogel adsorbent is fabricated by introducing the charge-positive tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) into the charge-negative polyacrylamidoxime (PAO). The fabricated PAO-CB hydrogel membrane shows high anti-adhesive ability to the marine fouling, including both the biofouling and abiotic fouling, which is due to the decrease of the charge attraction between the adsorbent and the charged contaminants. Benefitting from the reduce of marine fouling, the PAO-CB hydrogel membrane shows a high uranium extraction capacity of 8.59 mg g−1, which is higher than that of PAO hydrogel membrane by 44.59%. The finding of this study indicates that the construction of charge balanced adsorbent would be an effective strategy to control the complicated marine fouling during uranium extraction from seawater. Effective uranium extraction from seawater can contribute greatly for meeting the needs of low carbon energy. Extensive studies have been conducted on polyamidoxime-based (PAO-based) adsorbents for their exceptional uranium adsorption capabilities. However, the salt-shrinkage effect severely hinders the extraction of uranium from seawater using traditional PAO-based adsorbents. This study synthesizes a novel semi-interpenetrating polymer network hydrogel, designated as PAO/PMPC-SH, using a free-radical polymerization approach utilizing PAO and zwitterionic poly (2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC). The incorporation of the PMPC component endows the adsorbent with exceptional resistance to salt shrinkage owing to the antipolyelectrolyte effect. This characteristic facilitates the diffusion of uranyl ions within PAO/PMPC-SH, even in a high-salt environment with a salt concentration as high as 25 wt%, thereby exposing the uranium binding sites in the adsorbent. Moreover, PAO/PMPC-SH exhibits exceptional antibacterial activity. After 28 days of test in natural seawater, PAO/PMPC-SH demonstrates a high uranium extraction capacity of 6.26 mg g−1, representing only a 9.14 % decrease compared with the capacity of adsorbing in marine microorganism-removed natural seawater. Huge seawater resources are of utmost importance in addressing the increasing and severe water shortage worldwide. However, high-efficiently and sustainably extracting fresh water from seawater through solar evaporation remains a challenging task. Herein, we propose a novel approach based on the morph-genetic biomimetic concept, utilizing a cuttlebone-templated directional porous hydrogel (CTDPH). By etching away the cuttlebone (CaCO 3) in the hydrogel network, we have developed a zwitterionic material that exhibits high-efficiency photo-thermal conversion, resistance to salt deposition, and super hydrophilicity, enabling high-efficiency solar evaporation. The resultant CTDPH demonstrates a high level of photo-thermal conversion efficiency, thanks to the incorporation of MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x) 2D nanosheets. By introducing polyzwitterions into the hydrogel matrix, the CTDPH achieves superhydrophilicity, greatly enhancing the transport of seawater. More importantly, the CTDPH possesses a penetrating oriented macro-porous structure, enabling rapid seawater transportation while effectively preventing salt crystallization. This prevents salt deposition on the surface of the hydrogel even during continuous 12-hour 1.0 sun irradiation. As a result, compared with the MXene-free gels and cuttlebone-reserved gels, this CTDPH can largely increase the seawater evaporating rate from 0.73 or 1.75 to 3.11 kg m-2h−1 under 1.0 sun irradiation. Furthermore, even after undergoing 10 cycles of seawater evaporation, the CTDPH still maintains 91.6% of its original solar evaporation rate (2.85 kg m-2h−1). The CTDPH emerges as a promising contender, offering both high efficiency and sustainability for solar evaporation from seawater, while simultaneously paving the way for innovative approaches to explore other materials and systems in the realm of solar evaporation. Utilization of uranium resource in seawater are highly possible to meet the growth demands for the sustainable development of nuclear energy industry. Bio-adsorbents exhibit high performance in terms of adsorption selectivity, equilibrium speed, and environmental friendliness, while the high fabrication cost hinders their practical application. In this study, a low-cost soy protein isolate (SPI) is used to fabricate adsorbent named SPI hydrogel for uranium extraction. This is the first report on applying bio-adsorbents derived from low-cost natural proteins for uranium extraction. The SPI hydrogel showed high uranium adsorption capacity of 53.94 mg g−1 in simulated nuclear wastewater and 5.29 mg g−1 is achieved in natural seawater, which is higher than all currently available adsorbents based on non-modified natural biomolecules. The amino and oxygen-containing groups are identified as the functional groups for uranyl binding by providing four oxygen and two nitrogen atoms to form equatorial coordination with uranyl, which guarantees the high binding selectivity and affinity to uranyl ions. The low cost for accessing the raw material together with the environmental friendliness, high salt tolerance, high uranium adsorption ability, and high selectivity to uranium, make SPI hydrogel a promising adsorbent for uranium extraction from seawater and nuclear wastewater. • A new strategy of cooperative reaming is used to prepare macroporous hydrogel. • The pore size on the novel MP-PAO hydrogel membrane reaches up to 40 µm. • The MP-PAO membrane shows both high uranium sorption capacity and good reusability. • The high adsorption rate can be gained with 24-day extraction equilibrium time. As nuclear power plant fuel, nearly 4.5 billion tons of uranium is reserved in the ocean with a low concentration of 3.3 ppb. Uranium capture from natural seawater relies heavily on the development of highly efficient uranium adsorbent. By combination of the water-soluble pore-forming agent (sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO 3) and alkali treatment technology, a novel macroporous polyamidoxime (MP-PAO) hydrogel membrane is prepared for highly efficient uranium sorption. The macropores with a size of about 40 µm in diameter contribute to the exposure of previously hidden coordination bond sites and fast diffusion of uranyl ion. As a result, the MP-PAO membrane adsorbent delivers superior uranium sorption capacity of 5.80 mg-U/g-Ads, almost 1.76 times that of the pristine polyamidoxime (PAO) membrane adsorbent. Strikingly, the adsorption equilibrium of uranium on the MP-PAO membrane can be reached within 24 days. The adsorption rate of MP-PAO membrane is 14.29% faster than that of the reference PAO membrane. In addition, the MP-PAO membrane also shows a good reusability and long service life. The efficient development of selective adsorbents for uranium extraction from seawater is necessary for their potential application in nuclear power generation. The amidoxime-based adsorbents have been recognized as the potential candidates, whereas they still suffer from a much higher affinity towards V(V) present in the seawater over U(VI), leading to the extremely limited commercial use. In this work, we develop a novel mussel-inspired photothermal polyamidoxime (PAO) hydrogel adsorbent, in which polydopamine (PDA) chains are linked to PAO (PDA-PAO) via Michael addition. Dual-crosslinked Fe@PDA-PAO hydrogel structure is constructed by noncovalent bonds between the catechol of PDA chains (e.g. π-π stacking and hydrogen bonds) as well as ionic coordination of Fe3+. PDA contributes to the improved hydrophilicity and high photothermal conversion efficiency. As a result, after immersing in real seawater for 6 weeks, light-irradiated Fe@PDA-PAO hydrogel delivers high uranium sorption capacity (12.67 mg-U/g-Ads) together with high U/V mass ratios (1.17), which are superior to currently available hydrogel adsorbents. Meanwhile, Fe3+ coordination endows Fe@PDA-PAO hydrogel with excellent tensile strength and self-recovery ability, which are of great significance to withstand the harsh conditions of ocean environment for practical applications. Highly efficient extraction of uranium from seawater is vital for meeting the growth demands of uranium resources for the development of nuclear energy industry. However, currently available uranium adsorbents encounter multiple challenges, including the ultralong extraction period, severe marine biofouling, and violent impact of ocean motions. Targeting on these challenges and inspiring by the high tolerance of kelp to marine biofouling and motions, a kelp inspired super-toughness (KIST) bio-hydrogel is fabricated for uranium extraction from seawater. The hydrogel KIST is prepared by compositing the biofriendly and low-cost bacterial cell debris with polyvinyl alcohol, making the KIST hydrogel possesses high environment friendly. Attributing to the fast uranium adsorption rate of the bacterial cell debris, the KIST hydrogel realizes a uranium extraction capacity of 1.18 mg g−1 in biofouling-containing natural seawater with an ultrafast equilibrium adsorption time of 28 h, which is the shortest among all available uranium adsorbents in natural seawater. The antimicrobial activity of the bacterial cell debris empowers KIST hydrogel with as high as 99.21% inhibition rate to the growth of a broad range marine biofouling microorganisms, including the marine bacteria and marine algae. The KIST hydrogel also possesses outstanding tensile ability, flexibility, and rheological property, endowing the hydrogel with high resistance to the ocean current.
