Due to intrinsic defect of fire hazard security, improving the flame retardant capacity of paper is still insufficient in case of precombustion. Herein, we integrate the flame retardant with flame detection performance on the surface of paper, the restricts of graphene oxide (GO) are overcome between high thermoelectric performance and flexibility. A flexible lamellar thermoelectric composite (GO-LA-HP) is constructed through the co-assembly of GO, ascorbic acid (LA), and phenoxycycloposphazene (HP), lamellar GO-LA-HP avoid GO's toughness decline after modification, but also enhance fire sensitivity and flame resistance. The composite could significantly decrease the temperature rise stage (<150 °C), and trigger the fire-warning within 2 s. The hybrid coating composed of phytic acid/phosphoric acid (PyA/PA) and modified thermoelectric GO-LA-HP becomes excellent compatibility on the surface of the modified paper (GPP). GPP is able to extinguish itself immediately after leaving the fire in the vertical combustion, and display the excellent flame resistance. Furthermore, GPP's alarm signal could be timely generated as little as 3 s of contacting the flame, and the response time can exceed 600 s. Timely and rapid detection of antibiotic residues in the environment is conducive to safeguarding human health and promoting an ecological virtuous cycle. A foldable paper-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was successfully developed for the detection of ampicillin (AMP) based on glutathione/zirconium dioxide hollow nanorods/aptamer (GSH@ZrO 2 HS@apt) modified cellulose paper as a reactive zone with laser direct-writing lead sulfide/cadmium sulfide/graphene (PbS/CdS/LIG) as photoelectrode and cobalt hydroxide (CoOOH) as a photoresist material. Initially, AMP was introduced into the paper-based reaction zone as a biogate aptamer, which specifically recognized the target and then left the ZrO 2 HS surface, releasing glutathione (GSH) encapsulated inside. Subsequently, the introduction of GSH into the reaction region and etching of CoOOH nanosheets to expose the PbS/CdS/LIG photosensitive material increased photocurrent. Under optimal conditions, the paper-based PEC biosensor showed a linear response to AMP in the range of 5.0 - 2 × 10 4 pM with a detection limit of 1.36 pM (S/N = 3). Easy, economical, and swift detecting tools are very demanded for assaying various chemical species. The introduction of label-free paper-based read-out devices has significantly reached the demand of analytical science for target analytes assays. Herein, a facile, and disposable inexpensive paper-based sensing tool was fabricated for sensing As 3+ ion using graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as a fluorescent reader. The CA-GQDs were synthesized using citric acid (CA) as a precursor via the pyrolysis method, further physisorbed on the cellulose substrate for sensing of As 3+ via aggregation-based fluorescence "turn-off" mechanism. The linear range for quantitating As 3+ ion is in the range of 0.05-50 μM with a detection limit of 10 nM. The practical application of the CA-GQDs-based analytical platform was verified by assaying As 3+ ion in water samples. Background: Okadaic acid (OA), as a diarrhetic shellfish poisoning, can increase the risk of acute carcinogenic or teratogenic effects for the ingestion of OA contaminated shellfish. At present, much effort has been made to graft immunoassay onto a paper substrate to make paper-based sensors for rapid and simple detection of shellfish toxin. However, the complicated washing steps and low protein fixation efficiency on the paper substrate need to be further addressed., Results: A novel paper-tip immunosensor for detecting OA was developed combined with smartphone and naked eye readout. The trapezoid paper tip was consisted of quantitative and qualitative detection zones. To improve the OA antigen immobilization efficiency on the paper substrate, graphene oxide (GO)-assisted protein immobilization method was introduced. Meanwhile, Au nanoparticles composite probe combined with the lateral flow washing was developed to simplify the washing step. The OA antigen-immobilized zone, as the detection zone Ⅰ, was used for quantitative assay by smartphone imaging. The paper-tip front, as the detection zone Ⅱ, which could qualitatively differentiate OA pollution level within 45 min using the naked eye. The competitive immunoassay on the paper tip exhibited a wide linear range for detecting OA (0.02-50 ng∙mL -1 ) with low detection limit of 0.02 ng∙mL -1 . The recovery of OA in spiked shellfish samples was in the range of 90.3 %-113.%., Significance: These results demonstrated that the proposed paper-tip immunosensor could provide a simple, low-cost and high-sensitivity test for OA detection without the need for additional large-scale equipment or expertise. A one-shot CO 2 laser-based strategy to generate conductive reduced graphene oxide (rGO) decorated with nanoceria (nCe) is proposed. The 2D/0D rGO-nCe films, integrated as catalytic sensing layers in paper-based sensors, were employed for on-site monitoring of indoor fogging treatments against Listeria monocytogenes (Lm), a ubiquitous pathogenic bacterium. The rGO-nCe laser-assisted synthesis was optimized to preserve the rGO film morphological and electron-transfer features and simultaneously integrate catalytic nCe. The films were characterized by microscopical (SEM), spectroscopical (EDX, Raman, and FTIR), and electrochemical techniques. The most performing film was integrated into a nitrocellulose substrate, and the complete sensor was assembled via a combination of xurography and stencil printing. The rGO-nCe sensor's catalytic activity was proved toward the detection of H 2 O 2 , obtaining sensitive determination (LOD = 0.3 µM) and an extended linear range (0.5-1500 µM). Eventually, the rGO-nCe sensor was challenged for the real-time continuous monitoring of hydrogen peroxide aerosol during no-touch fogging treatment conducted following the EU's recommendation for biocidal product use. Treatment effectiveness was proved toward three Lm strains characterized by different origins, i.e., type strain ATCC 7644, clinical strain 338, and food strain 641/6II. The exploration into nanomaterial-based nonenzymatic biosensors with superb performance in terms of good sensitivity and anti-interference ability in disease marker monitoring has always attained undoubted priority in sensing systems. In this work, we report the design and synthesis of a highly active nanocatalyst, i.e., palladium and platinum nanoparticles (Pt&Pd-NPs) decorated ultrathin nanoporous gold (NPG) film, which is modified on a homemade graphene paper (GP) to develop a high-performance freestanding and flexible nanohybrid electrode. Owing to the structural characteristics the robust GP electrode substrate, and high electrochemically catalytic activities and durability of the permeable NPG support and ultrafine and high-density Pt&Pd-NPs on it, the resultant Pt&Pd-NPs-NPG/GP electrode exhibits excellent sensing performance of low detection limitation, high sensitivity and anti-interference capability, good reproducibility and long-term stability for the detection of small molecular biomarkers hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and glucose (Glu), and has been applied to the monitoring of H 2 O 2 in different types of live cells and Glu in body fluids such as urine and fingertip blood, which is of great significance for the clinical diagnosis and prognosis in point-of-care testing.

The reuse of waste papers by conversion into valuable carbon materials has received considerable attention for diverse applications such as energy storage and water purification. However, traditional methods for converting waste papers into materials with suitable properties for specific applications are often complex and ineffective, involving consecutive carbonization and activation steps. Herein, we propose a simple one-step microwave (MW)-assisted synthesis for preparing waste paper-derived porous carbons (WPCs) for energy storage and water purification. Through a 30-min synthesis, WPCs with graphitic structure and high specific surface area were successfully produced. The fabricated WPCs exhibited outstanding charge storage capability with a maximum specific capacitance of 237.7 F g -1 . Additionally, the WPC demonstrates a high removal efficiency for various dyes, achieving a maximum removal efficiency of 95.0% for methylene blue. This paper presents the results of research on the impact of graphene paper on selected bacterial strains. Graphene oxide, from which graphene paper is made, has mainly bacteriostatic properties. Therefore, the main goal of this research was to determine the possibility of using graphene paper as a carrier of a medicinal substance. Studies of the degree of bacterial inhibition were performed on Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains. Graphene paper was analyzed not only in the state of delivery but also after the incorporation of the antibiotics ciprofloxacin, cefazolin, and methicillin into its structures. In addition, Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, contact angle, and microscopic analysis of bacteria on the surface of the examined graphene paper samples were also performed. Studies have shown that graphene paper with built-in ciprofloxacin had a bactericidal effect on the strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa . In contrast, methicillin, as well as cefazolin, deposited on graphene paper acted mainly locally. Studies have shown that graphene paper can be used as a carrier of selected medicinal substances.

Tuberculosis (TB) currently remains a major life-threatening disease as it can be fatal if not treated properly or in a timely manner. Herein, we first describe a disposable and cost-effective paper-based electrochemical biosensor based on a gold particle-decorated carboxyl graphene (AuPs/GCOOH)-modified electrode for detecting heat shock protein (Hsp16.3), which is a specific biomarker indicating the onset of TB infection. The device pattern was first engineered to facilitate detection procedures and printed on low-cost filter paper to create hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions using a wax printing technique. Immunoassays proceeded in a half-sandwich format because it is a reagent-less approach and requires no labeling step. The fabrication of the immunosensor began with GCOOH drop casting, the electrochemical deposition of AuPs, and the establishment of a biorecognition layer against Hsp16.3 utilizing 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC)/N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS)-sulfo standard chemistry. The appearance of Hsp16.3 resulted in a substantial decrease in the electrochemical signal response of the redox probe employed [Fe (CN) 6 ] 3-/4- due to the created immunocomplexes that possess insulation properties. GCOOH enables direct antibody immobilization, and AuPs enhance the electrochemical properties of the sensor. This proposed immunosensor, while requiring only a miniscule sample volume (5 μL), achieved superior performance in terms of the limit of detection, measuring at 0.01 ng/mL. For antibiotics misuse since the global outbreak of COVID 19, a novel strategy for discriminating and detecting antibiotics is proposed based on the graphene quantum dots with multi-doped heteroatoms including F, N and P (M-GQDs), which exhibit blue emission (419.0 nm) under the excitation of 336.0 nm. Specifically, the fluorescence of M-GQDs is quenched by tetracyclines (TCs) owing to inner filter effect (IFE) and enhanced by alkane-modified fluoroquinolones (AFQs), which is attributed to restricted conformational rotation based on π-π stacking, hydrogen-bonding and electrostatic interactions. Meanwhile, the electron-accepting property of oxazine ring in oxazine-modified fluoroquinolones (OFQs) increases emission peak at 498.0 nm and decreases emission peak at 419.0 nm as the color changes from blue to cyan. Hundreds of new electrochemical sensors are reported in literature every year. However, only a few of them makes it to the market. Manufacturability, or rather the lack of it, is the parameter that dictates if new sensing technologies will remain forever in the laboratory in which they are conceived. Inkjet printing is a low-cost and versatile technique that can facilitate the transfer of nanomaterial-based sensors to the market. Herein, an electroactive and self-assembling inkjet-printable ink based on protein-nanomaterial composites and exfoliated graphene is reported. The consensus tetratricopeptide proteins (CTPRs), used to formulate this ink, are engineered to template and coordinate electroactive metallic nanoclusters (NCs), and to self-assemble upon drying, forming stable films. The authors demonstrate that, by incorporating graphene in the ink formulation, it is possible to dramatically improve the electrocatalytic properties of the ink, obtaining an efficient hybrid material for hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) detection. Using this bio-ink, the authors manufactured disposable and environmentally sustainable electrochemical paper-based analytical devices (ePADs) to detect H 2 O 2 , outperforming commercial screen-printed platforms. A novel, biodegradable substrate based, and cost-effective flexible electrochemical sensor was developed for the highly selective and sensitive detection of one of the major neurotransmitters, dopamine, which can be utilised as a disposable electrode for point-of-care diagnostic applications. The active material CuSnB decorated over cellulose paper exhibits good sensitivities of 3.92 μA μM -1 cm -2 with a limit of detection of 0.5 nM. Moreover, the flexible sensor demonstrated superior selectivity towards co-existing metabolites such as ascorbic acid, glucose, and uric acid, in addition to stability at various mechanical deformations.

Paper-based biosensors are a potential paradigm of sensitivity achieved via microporous spreading/microfluidics, simplicity, and affordability. In this paper, we develop decorated paper with graphene and conductive polymer (herein referred to as graphene conductive polymer paper-based sensor or GCPPS) for sensitive detection of biomolecules. Planetary mixing resulted in uniformly dispersed graphene and conductive polymer ink, which was applied to laser-cut Whatman filter paper substrates. Scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy showed strong attachment of conductive polymer-functionalized graphene to cellulose fibers. The GCPPS detected dopamine and cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin 6 (IL-6) in the ranges of 12.5-400 µM, 0.005-50 ng/mL, and 2 pg/mL-2 µg/mL, respectively, using a minute sample volume of 2 µL. The electrodes showed lower detection limits (LODs) of 3.4 µM, 5.97 pg/mL, and 9.55 pg/mL for dopamine, TNF-α, and IL-6 respectively, which are promising for rapid and easy analysis for biomarkers detection. Additionally, these paper-based biosensors were highly selective (no serpin A1 detection with IL-6 antibody) and were able to detect IL-6 antigen in human serum with high sensitivity and hence, the portable, adaptable, point-of-care, quick, minute sample requirement offered by our fabricated biosensor is advantageous to healthcare applications.

Graphene paper (GP), a macroscopic self-supporting material, has exceptional flexibility and preserves the excellent physical and chemical properties of graphene nanomaterials. But its applications in regenerative medicine remain to be further explored. Here, we biologically functionalized GP with hydroxyapatite (HA) nanorods by the use of GP-binding peptides as an affinity linker. This strategy solved two daunting challenges for regenerative medicine applications of GP: the lack of good hydrophilicity for supporting cell growth and the difficulty in forming composites by binding with nanobiomaterials. Briefly, we first screened a high-affinity GP-binding peptide (TWWNPRLVYFDY) by the phage display technique. Then we chemically conjugated the GP-binding peptide to the synthetic HA nanorods. The GP-binding peptide on the resultant HA nanorods enabled them to be bound and assembled onto the GP substrate with high affinity, forming a GP-peptide-HA composite with significantly improved hydrophilicity of GP. The composite promoted the attachment and proliferation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), demonstrating its outstanding biocompatibility. Due to the unique compositions of the composite, it was also found to induce osteogenic differentiation of MSCs in vitro in the absence of other inducers in the medium, by verifying the expression of the osteogenic markers including collagen-1, bone morphogenetic proteins 2, runx-related transcription factor 2, osteocalcin, and alkaline phosphatase. Our work suggests that the GP-binding peptide can be used to link inorganic nanoparticles onto GP to facilitate the biomedical applications of GP.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs), found in blood and body fluids, have emerged as potential non-invasive biomarkers for disease and injury. miRNAs are quantitatively evaluated using typical RNA analysis methods such as the quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, microarrays, and Northern blot, all of which require complex procedures and expensive reagents. To utilize miRNAs as practical biomarkers, it will be helpful to develop simple and user-friendly sensors. In this study, a paper-based miRNA sensor was developed by combining two methods: (1) target-recycled DNAzyme (Dz) amplification and (2) graphene oxide-assisted Dz blotting on paper. The Dz spots on paper caused a miRNA-dependent color change in presence of colorimetric reagents and facilitated the quantification of absolute amount of the target miRNA, irrespective of the volume, with high reproducibility. Recently, single atom catalysts (SACs) featuring M-N x (M = metal) active sites on carbon support have drawn considerable attention due to their promising enzyme-like catalytic properties. However, typical synthesis methods of SACs often involve energy-intensive carbonization processes. Herein, we report a facile one-pot, low-temperature, wet impregnation method to fully utilize M-N 4 sites of manganese phthalocyanine (MnPc) by decorating molecular MnPc over the sheets of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP). The synthesized MnPc@GNP exhibits remarkable peroxidase-mimic catalytic activity toward the oxidation of chromogenic 3,3',5,5 ' -tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) substrate owing to the efficient utilization of atomically dispersed Mn and the high surface-to-volume ratio of the porous catalyst. A nanozyme-based colorimetric sensing probe is developed to detect important biomarker glutathione (GSH) within only 5 min in solution phase based on the ability of GSH to effectively inhibit the TMB oxidation. The high sensitivity and selectivity of the developed colorimetric assay enable us to quantitatively determine GSH concentration in different biological fluids. This work, for the first time, reports a rapid MnPc@GNP nanozyme-based colorimetric assay in the solid substrate by fabricating microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs). GSH is successfully detected on the fabricated μPADs coated with only 6.0 μg of nanozyme containing 1.6 nmol of Mn in the linear range of 0.5-10 μM with a limit of detection of 1.23 μM. This work also demonstrates the quantitative detection of GSH in mice liver tissue lysate using μPADs, which paves the way to develop μPADs for point-of-care testing.

We created novel Pd/CB-Ni@rGO nanomaterials for glucose detection. The as-synthesized nanomaterials were dropped on the electrode surface using the drop casting technique. The prepared electrode was then attached to a paper-based device containing the sample zone and the reaction zone, enabling plasma isolation and an enzymatic reaction for glucose detection in whole blood. The nanomaterials and surfaces of electrodes were characterized by FTIR, TEM, and SEM. The proposed approach is a disposable glucose detection method that is unaffected by protein fouling on the electrode, and it requires only one drop of human blood. Therefore, there is no need for extensive sample preparation, and there is less sample consumption. Under optimal conditions, Pd/CB-Ni@rGO can accurately measure blood glucose levels with a linear range of 7 to 7140 μM ( R 2 = 0.9986) and a low detection limit of 0.82 μM. Besides, the developed sensor shows excellent anti-interference capacity, stability, and satisfactory reproducibility and repeatability. Importantly, Pd/CB-Ni@rGO was successfully applied for glucose in whole blood from 4 volunteers, with results that correlated well with those obtained using an Accucheck glucometer at a 95% confidence level. Given its low cost, high accuracy, and ease of use, the blood glucose sensor holds significant potential for clinical use and broadens the area of future noninvasive sensor development.

Among the analytical tools, paper-based analytical devices (PADs) have become a leading alternative for point-of care testing (POCT). In this study, PADs were fabricated using an office laser printer. Then, the paper zone was modified with graphene oxide (GO) and pyrene derivatives, which provide a sufficient amount of carboxylic groups for conjugating antibodies. At an optimal pH, antibodies were covalently bound onto carboxylated cellulose surface in an oriented manner through a two-step strategy: electrostatic adsorption was followed by EDC/NHS coupling. α-fetoprotein (AFP) as a detection model, we compared with cellulose powder modified and unmodified paper zone. The results showed the color intensity and color uniformity on GO modified paper was improved. The activity of immobilized antibodies on GO/1-pyrenebutyric acid (GO/PBA) modified was three times higher than that of GO modified and about 1.8-fold higher than that of GO/1-pyrenecarboxylic acid (GO/PCA) modified. The GO/PBA modified paper-based immunoassay has enhanced sensitivity and low detection limit. A linear correlation between color intensity and concentration of AFP in the range of 0.01～16.5 ng mL -1 with a detection limit of 9.0 pg mL -1 were achieved, respectively. In this study, we present for the first time a simple and novel method for the fabrication of paper-based electrochemical sensors. The device development was carried out in a single stage with a standard wax printer. Hydrophobic zones were delimited with commercial solid ink, while electrodes were generated using new composite solid inks of graphene oxide/graphite/beeswax (GO/GRA/beeswax) and graphite/beeswax (GRA/beeswax). Subsequently, the electrodes were electrochemically activated by applying an overpotential. Various experimental variables for the GO/GRA/beeswax composite synthesis and electrochemical system obtention were evaluated. The activation process was examined by SEM, FTIR, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and contact angle measurement. These studies showed morphological and chemical changes in the electrode active surface. As a result, the activation stage considerably improved the electron transfer on the electrode. The manufactured device was successfully applied for galactose (Gal) determination. This method presented a linear relation in the Gal concentration range from 84 to 1736 μmol L -1 , with a LOD of 0.1 μmol L -1 . The variation within and between-assay coefficients were 5.3% and 6.8%, respectively. The fabrication of uniform and strong graphene-based conductive paper is challenging due to easy aggregation and poor film formability of graphene. Herein, on the basis of good dispersing effect of nanocellulose, high content graphene (50 wt%) composite paper with micro/nanocellulose fibers and silk fibroin (SF) was manufactured via simple casting method. The synergistic effects of cellulose microfibers (CMFs), cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and SF result in the paper with ideal combination of flexibility, electrical conductivity and mechanical strength, where CNFs, CMFs and SF act as dispersing and film forming for GNPs, dimensional stability, and interfacial binding agents, respectively. Extraordinarily, by adding SF, graphene nanosheets are tightly coated on the surface of CMFs. The composite paper shows a tensile strength of 49.29 MPa, surface resistance of 39.0-42.1 Ω and good joints bend sensing performance. Additionally, it is found that CMFs can hinder the micro-cracks from propagating during the cyclic elbow bending test. Recent progress in the in situ synthesise of various nanomaterials has gained tremendous interest and wide applications in various fields. For the first time to the best of our knowledge, this work reports a methodology of ultra-fast in situ synthesis of cobalt-cobalt oxide-reduced graphene oxide (Co-Co 3 O 4 -rGO (CC-rGO)) composite by laser ablation. The photothermal reduction technique was leveraged to develop the CC-rGO. For this, a low-cost 450 nm blue diode laser was irradiated onto a grade 1 filter paper in the presence of cobalt ions readily patterns the carbon matrix of paper to the composite material. Moreover, the variation of cobalt concentrations from 0.1-0.5 M led to structural and morphological changes. Standard techniques were adopted for thorough characterizations of developed sensor material for conductivity analysis, specific surface area, crystal-structural information, surface morphology, and chemical composition. The observed results were highly promoting towards the electrochemical sensing applications. Further, the developed sensor was found to be highly selective toward detecting a vital bio analyte alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The sensors performance was highly significant in the linear range of 10-800 mU l -1 with a detection limit of 10.13 mU l -1 . The sensors applicability was further validated in actual human serum samples via a recovery-based approach. Irregularities in breathing patterns can be detected using breath monitor sensors, and this help clinicians to predict health disorders ranging from sleep disorders to heart failures. Variations in humidity during the inhalation and exhalation of breath have been utilized as a marker to detect breath patterns, and graphene-based devices are the favored sensing media for relative humidity (RH). In general, most graphene-based RH sensors have been used to explore resistance change as a measurement parameter to calibrate against the RH value, and they are prone to noise interference. Here, we fabricated RH sensors using graphene ink as a sensing medium and printed them in the shape of interdigital electrodes on glossy paper using an office inkjet printer. Further, we investigated the capacitance change in the sensor for the RH changes in the range of 10-70%. It exhibited excellent sensitivity with 0.03 pF/% RH, good stability, and high intraday and interday repeatability, with relative standard deviations of 1.2% and 2.2%, respectively. Finally, the sensor was embedded into a face mask and interfaced with a microcontroller, and capacitance change was measured under three different breathing situations: normal breathing, deep breathing, and coughing. The result show that the dominant frequency for normal breath is 0.22 Hz, for deep breath, it is 0.11 Hz, and there was no significant dominant cough frequency due to persistent coughing and inconsistent patterns. Moreover, the sensor exhibited a short response and recovery time (<5 s) during inhalation and exhalation. Thus, the proposed paper-based RH sensor is promising wearable and disposable healthcare technology for clinical and home care health applications.

This study describes the development of electrochemical paper-based analytical devices (ePADs) using carbon-based paste combining silicone glue and graphite powder. The ePADs were manufactured using the screen-printing technique, which consisted of depositing the conductive ink on a screencast on the paper surface. In addition, an alternative electrical connector was designed and 3D-printed to make the detection method cheaper, portable and reproducible. The morphological, structural, and electrochemical properties of the conductive material developed were investigated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. The ePADs combined with the alternative connector revealed high repeatability, reproducibility, and stable responses considering a well-known redox probe ([Fe(CN) 6 ] 4-/3- ). In addition, the proposed ePAD provided a linear response for standard solutions of ascorbic acid (AA) in the concentration range between 0.1 and 2.0 mmol L -1 . The achieved limit of detection was 4.0 μmol L -1 . As proof of applicability, the ePADs were evaluated for AA analysis in synthetic biofluids (blood plasma and urine), vitamin C tablets, and food (gelatine and orange juice) samples. The current approaches of diagnostic platforms for detecting SARS-CoV-2 infections mostly relied on adapting the existing technology. In this work, a simple and low-cost electrochemical sensing platform for detecting SAR-CoV-2 antigen was established. The proposed sensor combined the innovative disposable paper-based immunosensor and cost-effective plant-based anti-SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibody CR3022, expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana. The cellulose nanocrystal was modified on screen-printed graphene electrode to provide the abundant COOH functional groups on electrode surface, leading to the high ability for antibody immobilization. The quantification of the presence receptor binding domain (RBD) spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 was performed using differential pulse voltammetry by monitoring the changing current of [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3-/4- redox solution. The current change of [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3-/4- before and after the presence of target RBD could be clearly distinguished, providing a linear relationship with RBD concentration in the range from 0.1 pg/mL to 500 ng/mL with the minimum limit of detection of 2.0 fg/mL. The proposed platform was successfully applied to detect RBD in nasopharyngeal swab samples with satisfactory results. Furthermore, the paper-based immunosensor was extended to quantify the RBD level in spiked saliva samples, demonstrating the broadly applicability of this system. Laser-induced graphene (LIG) is as a promising material for flexible microsupercapacitors (MSCs) due to its simple and cost-effective processing. However, LIG-MSC research and production has been centered on non-sustainable polymeric substrates, such as polyimide. In this work, it is presented a cost-effective, reproducible, and robust approach for the preparation of LIG structures via a one-step laser direct writing on chromatography paper. The developed strategy relies on soaking the paper in a 0.1 M sodium tetraborate solution (borax) prior to the laser processing. Borax acts as a fire-retardant agent, thus allowing the laser processing of sensitive substrates that other way would be easily destroyed under the high-energy beam. LIG on paper exhibiting low sheet resistance (30 Ω sq -1 ) and improved electrode/electrolyte interface was obtained by the proposed method. When used as microsupercapacitor electrodes, this laser-induced graphene resulted in specific capacitances of 4.6 mF cm -2 (0.015 mA cm -2 ). Furthermore, the devices exhibit excellent cycling stability (> 10,000 cycles at 0.5 mA cm -2 ) and good mechanical properties. By connecting the devices in series and parallel, it was also possible to control the voltage and energy delivered by the system. Thus, paper-based LIG-MSC can be used as energy storage devices for flexible, low-cost, and portable electronics. Laser-induced graphene (LIG) has gained preponderance in recent years, as a very attractive material for the fabrication and patterning of graphitic structures and electrodes, for multiple applications in electronics. Typically, polymeric substrates, such as polyimide, have been used as precursor materials, but other organic, more sustainable, and accessible precursor materials have emerged as viable alternatives, including cellulose substrates. However, these substrates have lacked the conductive and chemical properties achieved by conventional LIG precursor substrates and have not been translated into fully flexible, wearable scenarios. In this work, we expand the conductive properties of paper-based LIG, by boosting the graphitization potential of paper, through the introduction of external aromatic moieties and meticulous control of laser fluence. Colored wax printing over the paper substrates introduces aromatic chemical structures, allowing for the synthesis of LIG chemical structures with sheet resistances as low as 5 Ω·sq -1 , translating to an apparent conductivity as high as 28.2 S·cm -1 . Regarding chemical properties, I D ratios of 0.28 showcase low defect densities of LIG chemical structures and improve on previous reports on paper-based LIG, where sheet resistance has been limited to values around 30 Ω·sq I , with more defect dense and less crystalline chemical structures. With these improved properties, a simple transfer methodology was developed, based on a water-induced peel-off process that efficiently separates patterned LIG structures from the native paper substrates to conformable, flexible substrates, harnessing the multifunctional capabilities of LIG toward multiple applications in wearable electronics. Laser-induced graphene (LIG) has been applied in many different sensing devices, from mechanical sensors to biochemical sensors. In particular, LIG fabricated on paper (PaperLIG) shows great promise for preparing cheap, flexible, and disposable biosensors. Distinct from the fabrication of LIG on polyimide, a two-step process is used for the fabrication of PaperLIG. In this study, firstly, a highly conductive PaperLIG is fabricated. Further characterization of PaperLIG confirmed that it was suitable for developing biosensors. Subsequently, the PaperLIG was used to construct a biosensor by immobilizing glucose oxidase, aminoferrocene, and Nafion on the surface. The developed glucose biosensor could be operated at a low applied potential (-90 mV) for amperometric measurements. The as-prepared biosensor demonstrated a limit of detection of (50-75 µM) and a linear range from 100 µM to 3 mM. The influence of the concentration of the Nafion casting solution on the performance of the developed biosensor was also investigated. Potential interfering species in saliva did not have a noticeable effect on the detection of glucose. Based on the experimental results, the simple-to-prepare PaperLIG-based saliva glucose biosensor shows great promise for application in future diabetes management.

In this study, hydrogen harvesting from fermentation of sugarcane bagasse (SCB) was promoted by maintaining synergism between sulfonated graphene (SGR) catalyst and paper mill sludge (PMS). The sulfonic acid (-SO 3 H) groups in the catalyst played a major role in destructing the β-1,4 glycosidic bonds of sugarcane bagasse, releasing readily biodegradable sugars into the fermentation medium. The cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin conversion efficiency were improved by 127.5%, 495.0%, and 109.2%, respectively with 20 mgSGR/gVS catalyst addition, compared with the control samples. These values were also higher than those obtained by non-sulfonated graphene catalyst. The hydrogenation of sugarcane bagasse was maximized at a sulfonated graphene catalyst dosage of 60 mgSGR/gVS, providing the highest hydrogen harvesting of 4104 ± 321 mL. This was associated with an increase of the Proteobacteria phyla up to 52.0%, Firmicutes phyla to 13.9%, and Acinetobacter sp. to 39.8% compared with only 37.0%, 11.3% and 11.1% in the control assay respectively. Moreover, sulfonated graphene catalyst supplementation promoted the acetate fermentation reaction pathway by increasing the acetate/butyrate ratio up to 4.1. Nevertheless, elevating the catalyst dosage up to 120 mgSGR/gVS reduced the hydrogen harvesting (1190 ± 92 mL) due to the release of furfural (1.76 ± 0.02 g/L) in the fermentation cultures, deteriorating the microbes' internal composition and metabolism bioactivities. Finally maximizing the hydrogen productivity from sugarcane bagasse is feasible by incorporation of paper mill sludge and sulfonated graphene catalyst at dosage not exceeding 60 mgSGR/gVS. Nanoscale imprinting significantly increases the specific surface area and recognition capabilities of a molecularly imprinted polymer by improving accessibility to analytes, binding kinetics, and template removal. Herein, we present a novel synthetic route for a dual molecularly imprinted polymer (dual-MIP) of the carcinogen oxidative stress biomarkers 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) and 4-nitroquinolin-N-oxide (4-NQO) as coatings on graphene quantum-dot capped gold nanoparticles (GQDs-AuNPs). The dual-MIP was successfully coated on the GQDs-AuNPs core via a (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) linkage and copolymerization with the 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTMS) functional monomer. In addition, we fabricated a facile and compact three-dimensional electrochemical paper-based analytical device (3D-ePAD) for the simultaneous determination of the dual biomarkers using a GQDs-AuNPs@dual-MIP-modified graphene electrode (GQDs-AuNPs@dual-MIP/SPGE). The developed dual-MIP device provides greatly enhanced electrochemical signal amplification due to the improved electrode-specific surface area, electrocatalytic activity, and the inclusion of large numbers of dual-imprinted sites for 3-NT and 4-NQO detection. Quantitative analysis used square wave voltammetry, with an oxidation current appearing at -0.10 V for 4-NQO and +0.78 V for 3-NT. The dual-MIP sensor revealed excellent linear dynamic ranges of 0.01 to 500 μM for 3-NT and 0.005 to 250 μM for 4-NQO, with detection limits in nanomolar levels for both biomarkers. Furthermore, the dual-MIP sensor for the simultaneous determination of 3-NT and 4-NQO provides high accuracy and precision, with no evidence of interference from urine, serum, or whole blood samples.

The sulfuric acid-doping polyaniline (H-PANI-HSO4) are applied to conduct the electrochemical measurement and simulation calculation to investigate the capacitance, electronic structure and energy band properties. The H-PANI-HSO4 growing on graphite carbon paper (H-PANI-HSO4/GCP) is applied as an electroactive electrode to investigate electrochemical properties. The Faradaic capacitance of H-PANI-HSO4/GCP electrode is ascribed to the reversible redox reaction of bisulfate anion doping/dedoping protonated PANI (H-PANI). Cyclic voltammetry measurement at a scan rate of 5mVs−1 determines an equivalent mean response current of 0.64Ag−1 and a capacitance of 128.35Fg−1. Galvanostatic charge–discharge measurement determines specific capacitance from 129.06 to 116.88Fg−1 at current densities from 0.5 to 2.5Ag−1. Cyclic voltammetry-based capacitance at equivalent current density of 0.64Ag−1 is in accordance with galvanostatic charge–discharge-based capacitance at the current density of 0.57Ag−1. Electrochemical impedance spectrum measurements indicate that H-PANI-HSO4/GCP exhibits lower charge-transfer resistance, much lower Warburg resistance, higher quasicapacitance than H-PANI-HSO4 to approaching ideal capacitor. Density functional theory calculations indicate that H-PANI-HSO4 has a higher density of states (10.6 electron/eV) and lower bandgap energy (0.481eV) than H-PANI (5.24 electron/eV, 1.449eV), indicating its enhanced electronic conductivity. The electronic bandgap energy is accordingly decreased from 0.263eV for H-PANI-HSO4/GCP to 0 for H-PANI-HSO4/GCP. Electrochemical measurement and simulation calculation investigation proves that H-PANI-HSO4/GCP electrode with anion-doped and protonated state exhibits higher electronic conductivity and capacitance performance to act as superior electroactive material. Herein, a paper-based electrochemical sensor based on PtNP/COF TFPB-DHzDS @rGO was developed for the sensitive detection of furazolidone. A cluster-like covalent organic framework (COF TFPB-DHzDS ) was successfully grown on the surface of amino-functional reduced graphene oxide (rGO-NH 2 ) to avoid serious self-aggregation, which was further loaded with platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) with high catalytic activity as nanozyme to obtain PtNP/COF TFPB-DHzDS @rGO nanocomposites. The morphology of PtNP/COF TFPB-DHzDS @rGO nanocomposites was characterized, and the results showed that the smooth rGO surface became extremely rough after the modification of COF TFPB-DHzDS . Meanwhile, ultra-small PtNPs with sizes of around 1 nm were precisely anchored on COF TFPB-DHzDS to maintain their excellent catalytic activity. The conventional electrodes were used to detect furazolidone and showed a detection limit as low as 5 nM and a linear range from 15 nM to 110 μM. In contrast, the detection limit for the paper-based electrode was 0.23 μM, and the linear range was 0.69-110 μM. The results showed that the paper-based electrode can be used to detect furazolidone. This sensor is a potential candidate for the detection of furazolidone residue in human serum and fish samples.

As glucose biosensors play an important role in glycemic control, which can prevent the diabetic complications, the development of a glucose sensing platform is still in needed. Herein, the first proposal on the in-house fabricated paper-based screen-printed ionic liquid/graphene electrode (SPIL-GE) modified with MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ), prussian blue (PB), glucose oxidase (GOx), and Nafion is reported. The concentration of PB/Ti 3 C 2 T x was optimized and the optimal detection potential of PB/Ti 3 C 2 T x /GOx/Nafion/SPIL-GE is -0.05 V. The performance of PB/Ti 3 C 2 T x /GOx/Nafion modified SPIL-GE was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry technique. This paper-based platform integrated with nanomaterial composites were realized for glucose in the range of 0.0-15.0 mM with the correlation coefficient R 2 = 0.9937. The limit of detection method and limit of quantification were 24.5 μM and 81.7 μM, respectively. In the method comparison, this PB/Ti 3 C 2 T x /GOx/Nafion/SPIL-GE exhibits a good correlation with the reference hexokinase method. This novel glucose sensing platform can potentially be used for the good practice to enhance the sensitivity and open the opportunity to develop paper-based electroanalytical devices.

Topical lidocaine patches are commonly used to relieve pain and suffering in various clinical and household settings. Despite its extensive use, excessive skin absorption during numbing or pain reduction procedures can cause systemic toxicity, which can lead to life-threatening conditions. Rapid and reliable monitoring of escalating levels of lidocaine in the blood could help management/prevention of lidocaine overdose and its associated complications. To address this need, here we have developed a disposable point-of-care (POC) diagnostic platform composed of an integrated graphene-based electrochemical sensor with paper-based microfluidics for rapid detection of lidocaine levels in serum and blood samples. The fabrication process takes advantage of advanced, scalable manufacturing techniques, including printing, laser processing, and nondestructive near infrared (NIR) drying. The sensitivity tests of the platform revealed a sensitivity of ∼0.2 μA μM -1 towards lidocaine concentrations in the clinically relevant range (1-100 μM) in both complex matrix fluids of serum and blood with high cross specificity in the presence of the interfering analytes. The distinct properties and affordances of paper provide benefits that enabled paper to maintain an important role in the digital age. This is so much so, that some pen-paper interaction has been imitated in the digital world with touchscreens and stylus pens. Because digital medium also provides several advantages not available to physical paper, there is a clear benefit to merge the two mediums. Despite the plethora of concepts, prototypes and systems to digitise handwritten information on paper, these systems require specially prepared paper, complex setups and software, which can be used solely in combination with paper, and, most importantly, do not support the concurrent precise interaction with both mediums (paper and touchscreen) using one pen only. In this paper, we present the design, fabrication and evaluation of the Hybrid Stylus. The Hybrid Stylus is assembled with the infinity pencil tip (nib) made of graphite and a specially designed shielded tip holder that is attached to an active stylus. The stylus can be used for writing on a physical paper, while it still maintains all the features needed for tablet interaction. Moreover, the stylus also allows simultaneous digitisation of handwritten information on the paper when the paper is placed on the tablet screen. In order to evaluate the concept, we also add a user-friendly manual alignment of paper position on the underlying tablet computer The evaluation demonstrates that the system achieves almost perfect digitisation of strokes (98.6% of strokes were correctly registered with only 1.2% of ghost strokes) whilst maintaining excellent user experience of writing with a pencil on the paper.

A novel electrochemical paper-based microfluidic chip was firstly developed to simultaneously detect cadmium (Ⅱ) and lead (Ⅱ) in vegetable and fruit samples. The patterned filter paper was prepared through the printing of three-electrode patterns on filter paper using an automatic screen-printing machine. Portable and low-cost (less than $1) electrochemical paper-based chips are prepared by filling conductive ink and hot pressing. The paper-based chip could realize signal amplification through gold nanoparticles and seed solutions. Cadmium (Ⅱ) and lead (Ⅱ) were sensitively detected by their aptamers labeled with methylene blue and ferrocene, separately. Under the optimal experimental parameters, the paper-based chip detected cadmium (Ⅱ) and lead (Ⅱ) as low as 23.31 and 46.23 pmol/L (3σ) with a wide linear range from 0.1 to 1000 nmol/L and exhibited excellent selectivity. The RSD was 6.41% (cadmium (Ⅱ)) and 4.20% (lead (Ⅱ)). Compared with other methods, the paper-based chip could complete the detection within 15 min and could be stored at -20 °C for 5 days. In this study, a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) electrochemical sensor based on electrochemically modified graphite paper (EM-GP) was developed for the detection of 3-MCPD for the first time. To this end, Prussian blue (PB) was electrodeposited on EM-GP to yield uniformly distributed PtNPs. The successful preparation of Pt@PB/EM-GP was verified by SEM, Raman spectroscopy, XRD,XPS, and EDS. MIP was then prepared by CV electropolymerization with template molecules (3-MCPD), and density functional theory (DFT) at M06-2X/6-31 + g (d,p) level was used to calculate the molecular-level interaction between 3-MCPD and MIP. Under the optimum conditions, the dynamic linear range of the sensing platform varied from 1 × 10 -8 mol/L to 5 × 10 -5 mol/L with a detection limit estimated to 5 × 10 -9 mol/L (S/N = 3). Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ are two typical metallic pollutants in food. Therefore, it is of great significance to establish a method which can simultaneously detect them. Here, an electrochemical sensor was established to simultaneously detect Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ in food samples based on sensing electrode prepared by conductive carbon paper, rGO and CoZn·MOF (CP-rGO-CoZn·MOF). Under the optimized conditions, the proposed electrochemical sensor achieves simultaneous detection of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ low to 0.565 nM (Cd 2+ ) and 0.588 nM (Pb 2+ ), respectively. Further selective experiments and repetitive experiments perform well. Spiked experiments find that the recovery rates of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ in food samples are between 97.5% to 105.9% and 94.3%-109.6%, indicating the established electrochemical sensor owns a good response to the targets. The graphene quantum dots (GQDs) was synthesized using potato starch and water by hydrothermal method and further used for reduction of tetracholoroauric acid to form graphene quantum dots-gold (GQDs@AuNPs) nanocomposite. The GQDs/GQDs@AuNPs were analyzed using FTIR, UV-Vis, Flourometry and HR-TEM. The synthesized GQDs@AuNPs were further used for fabrication of cost-effective screen-printed paper electrode (SPPE) based DNA sensor for the detection of O. tsutsugamushi using htrA gene specific 5'NH2 linked DNA probe. Modification of SPPE using GQDs@AuNPs nanocomposite and ssDNA probe was monitored using EIS, FTIR, FE-SEM and AFM. The sensor detection limit (LOD) was assessed as 0.002 ng/μl from the standard calibration curve with the correlation coefficient, R 2  = 0.993. The sensitivity of the DNA sensor was calculated as 7700 μA/cm 2 /ng for ssGDNA of O. tsutsugamushi using cyclic voltammetry. The sensor validation was done using scrub typhus patient's blood DNA samples. The sensor showed good storage stability at 4 °C for six months with just a loss of 12% of the initial current values. We outline the fabrication of a highly sensitive biosensor for phytic acid (PA) determination using the extract of rice sprout and SBA@DABCO nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were first added to the surface of small paper disks. After drying, the extract of rice sprout in phosphate buffered saline was immobilized on the paper disks. FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD, and SEM were employed for the characterization of the nanoparticles. The assembly process of the modified paper disks on top of graphite screen-printed electrodes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. PA measurements were performed by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) with a small amount of sample (7 μL) for analysis. The cooperation of the rice sprout extract and the nanostructure of this biosensor led to the selective and sensitive electrochemical determination of PA. The limit of detection (S/N = 3) and linear dynamic range for PA determination by DPV were obtained at 0.04 μM and 0.1-10.0 μM, respectively. The biosensor showed excellent sensitivity for the determination of PA in real samples such as biscuits and wheat flour.

Herein, we demonstrate a microwave-assisted chemical reduction technique to exfoliate a few layers of graphene from the natural waste material, 'coconut shell'. The microwave irradiation coconut shell is subjected to structural, morphological and functional groups characterization methods including SEM, Raman, FTIR and XPS spectroscopic analyses. The formation of biomass reduced graphene (BRG) has been confirmed through Raman and FTIR spectroscopic analyzes with the presence of D, G and 2D and other functional spectral bands, respectively. The surface topography of the BRG exhibits two-dimensional mat structures with wrinkle topography, imaged by electron microscopic techniques. The metallic behaviour of the BRG is evaluated by band structure calculation using density functional theory. The synthesized nanostructure has been evaluated for exhaled diabetic breath sensing application by fabricating sensor device on the paper-based substrate by roll-to-roll coating technique. The BRG sensor exhibited enhanced sensing response at a very lower concentration of diabetic biomarker with long term stability and rapid response/recovery time of 1.11 s/41.25 s, respectively. Based on our findings, the microwave-assisted BRG is a potential candidate for fabricating highly scalable, inherently safe, economically viable and excellent sensing performance to detect exhaled diabetic breath at room temperature., (© 2022 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

TEMPO-oxidized nanofibrillated cellulose (ONFC) with charged carboxyl groups is introduced for the efficient exfoliation of two-dimensional (2D) MoS 2 /graphene composites. As an effective dispersant agent, ONFC can be easily absorbed between the adjacent layers, so as to prevent the accumulation of the exfoliated nanosheets. With the assistance of charged ONFC, the exfoliated MoS 2 /graphene is gradually increased in the aqueous dispersions with the elongated sonication time. After dewatering, self-standing MoS 2 /Graphene/ONFC/CNTs composite films are rationally constructed using ONFC as flexible fibrous skeleton, and CNTs/graphene as 1D/2D interpenetrating electrical networks. Ultrathin MoS 2 nanosheets anchored on the 1D/2D heterogeneous networks is directly acted as an ideal paper-anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) without using traditional metallic current collector. The paper describes the development of an electrochemical sensor to be used for the determination of synthetic food colorants such as Sunset Yellow FCF (SY) and Tartrazine (TZ). The sensor is a carbon paper (CP) electrode, manufactured by using hot lamination technology and volume modified with fine-grained graphite powder (GrP). The sensor (GrP/CP) was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, electrochemical impedance analysis, cyclic, linear sweep and differential pulse voltammetry. The mechanism of SY and TZ electrochemical oxidation on GrP/CP was studied. The developed sensor has good electron transfer characteristics and low electron resistance, high sensitivity and selectivity. Applying the differential pulse mode, linear dynamic ranges of 0.005-1.0 μM and 0.02-7.5 μM with limits of detection of 0.78 nM and 8.2 nM for SY and TZ, respectively, were obtained. The sensor was used to detect SY and TZ in non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks. The results obtained from drink analysis prove good reproducibility (RSD ≤ 0.072) and accuracy (recovery 96-104%).

Cadmium ion (Cd (II)) is a highly toxic heavy metal usually found in natural water. Exposure to Cd (II) can produce serious effects in human organs such as Itai-Itai disease. Therefore, the maximum allowance levels of Cd (II) in drinking water and herbal medicines imposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) are 3 μg L -1 and 300 μg kg -1 , respectively. In this work, nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) as a fluorescent sensor for Cd (II) determination was developed in both solution-based and paper-based systems. N-GQDs were synthesized from citric acid (CA) and ethylenediamine (EDA) via the hydrothermal method. The synthesized N-GQDs emitted intense blue fluorescence with a quantum yield (QY) of up to 80%. The functional groups on the surface of N-GQDs measured by FTIR were carboxyl (COO - ), hydroxyl (OH - ), and amine (NH 2 ) groups, suggesting that they could be bound to Cd (II) for complexation. The fluorescence intensity of N-GQDs was gradually enhanced with the increase of Cd (II) concentration. This phenomenon was proved to result from the fluorescence enhancement (turn-on) based on the chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) mechanism. Under the optimum conditions in the solution-based and paper-based systems, the limits of detection (LODs) were found to be 1.09 and 0.59 μg L -1 , respectively. Furthermore, the developed sensors showed relatively high selectivity toward Cd (II) over ten other metal cations and six other anions of different charges. The performance of the sensor in real water and herbal medicine samples exhibited no significant difference as compared to the results of the validation method (ICP-OES). Therefore, the developed sensors can be used as fluorescent sensors for Cd (II) determination with high sensitivity, high selectivity, short incubation time (5 min). As such, the paper-based strategy has excellent promising potential for practical analysis of Cd (II) in water and herbal medicine samples with a trace level of Cd (II) concentrations., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Graphene papers (GPs) have revolutionized the area of sensors toward low-cost, user-friendly and wearable/portable owning to their unique properties such as scalable production capacity, tunable microstructure, and extraordinary mechanical flexibility. They can be utilized as versatile building blocks by regulating their architectures to enhance various properties like electronic property, thermal conductivity and mechanical strength. Furthermore, thanks to the excellent compatibility, GPs as support materials are able to associate with other materials through various interaction forces to realize specific functionalization. With the impressive performances mentioned above, lots of smart devices like flexible sensors, advanced wearable/stretchable electronics, and high-performance point-of-care analytical devices are continually and rapidly being developed. Herein, this review aims at offering a critical engineering insight from smart architecture of macroscopic GPs to sensor application, with the emphasis on purpose-driven specific dual-mode functionalization (structural functionalization and foreign materials functionalization). We summarize the multiple possibilities to functionalize graphene and its derivative based papers/films/membranes. The sensing application of GPs in human health management, food contaminant inspection, and environmental monitoring is evaluated just before leading to our conclusions and perspectives., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. We developed a disposable paper battery aiming to reduce the environmental impact of single-use electronics for applications such as point of care diagnosis, smart packaging and environmental sensing. The battery uses Zinc as a biodegradable metal anode, graphite as a nontoxic cathode material and paper as a biodegradable substrate. To facilitate additive manufacturing, we developed electrodes and current collector inks that can be stencil printed on paper to create water-activated batteries of arbitrary shape and size. The battery remains inactive until water is provided and absorbed by the paper substrate, taking advantage of its natural wicking behavior. Once activated, a single cell provides an open circuit potential of 1.2 V and a peak power density of 150 µW/cm 2 at 0.5 mA. Laser-induced graphene (LIG) on paper substrates is a desirable material for single-use point-of-care sensing with its high-quality electrical properties, low fabrication cost, and ease of disposal. While a prior study has shown how the repeated lasing of substrates enables the synthesis of high-quality porous graphitic films, however, the process-property correlation of lasing process on the surface microstructure and electrochemical behavior, including charge-transfer kinetics, is missing. The current study presents a systematic in-depth study on LIG synthesis to elucidate the complex relationship between the surface microstructure and the resulting electroanalytical properties. The observed improvements were then applied to develop high-quality LIG-based electrochemical biosensors for uric acid detection. We show that the optimal paper LIG produced via a dual pass (defocused followed by focused lasing) produces high-quality graphene in terms of crystallinity, sp 2 content, and electrochemical surface area. The highest quality LIG electrodes achieved a high rate constant k 0 and a significant reduction in charge-transfer resistance (818 Ω compared with 1320 Ω for a commercial glassy carbon electrode). By employing square wave anodic stripping voltammetry and chronoamperometry on a disposable two-electrode paper LIG-based device, the improved charge-transfer kinetics led to enhanced performance for sensing of uric acid with a sensitivity of 24.35 ± 1.55 μA μM -2 and a limit of detection of 41 nM. This study shows how high-quality, sensitive LIG electrodes can be integrated into electrochemical paper analytical devices.-1 and a significant reduction in charge-transfer resistance (818 Ω compared with 1320 Ω for a commercial glassy carbon electrode). This work presents a fully disposable microchamber for gas generation of a sample solution. The microchamber consists of a cylindrical well-reactor and a paper-based microfluidic lid (μFluidic lid), which also serves as the reagent loading and dispensing unit. The base of the reactor consists of a hydrophobic membrane covering an in-house graphene electrochemical gas sensor. Fabrication of the gas sensor and the three-layer μFluidic lid is described. The μFluidic lid is designed to provide a steady addition of the acid reagent into the sample solution instead of liquid drops from a disposable syringe. There are three steps in the procedure: (i) acidification of the sample in the reactor to generate SO 2 gas by the slow dispensing of the acid reagent from the μFluidic lid, (ii) diffusion of the liberated SO 2 gas through the hydrophobic membrane at the base of the reactor, and (iii) in situ detection of SO 2 by cathodic reduction at the graphene electrode. The device was demonstrated for quantitation of the sulfite preservative in wine without heating or stirring. The selectivity of the analysis is ensured by the combination of the gas-diffusion membrane and the selectivity of the electrochemical sensor. The linear working range is 2-60 mg L -1 SO 2 , with a limit of detection (3SD of intercept/slope) of 1.5 mg L -1 SO 2 . This in situ method has the shortest analysis time (8 min per sample) among all voltammetric methods that detect SO 2(g) via membrane gas diffusion.

Herein, a so-called carbon nanotube (CNT) electrode was printed in on a paper substrate using the handwriting technique and carbon nanotube ink in a marker pen to print the working electrode, graphite pencil to print the counter electrode and graphite/silver nanoparticle (AgNP) ink in a rollerball pen to print the quasi-reference electrode. The carbon nanotube electrode was characterized via scanning electron microscopy. The electrode was optimized based on the type of paper, hydrophobic barrier and number of layers. In summary, the optimized parameters included the use of matte paper with a mineral spirit layer. The number of carbon nanotube layers to achieve the best electrochemical performance was 25. The final graphite electrode was a miniaturized and flexible paper-based electrochemical electrode. To evaluate the electrical properties of the electrodes, the ohmic resistance of each ink was tested using a multimeter and the obtained values were 18.62 kΩ for the CNT ink, 1.53 Ω for the AgNP ink and 3.53 kΩ for the graphite trace. These results indicate the good conductivity of each synthesized ink used in the fabrication of the CNT electrode. Finally, the electrode was used to measure the electrochemical response of different concentrations of K 4 [Fe(CN) 6 ]. Then, a calibration curve was obtained from the voltammograms and linearity was observed in the range of 0.5-3.5 mM. This suggests that the CNT electrode has the potential to be used as an amperometric electrode.

In this study, a high-performance flexible reduced graphene oxide (rGO) paper electrode composed of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) for the detection of Sudan I was fabricated. Ag NPs were doped with rGO nanoheets by self-assemble and assembled into a paper electrode with layer-by-layer structure via vacuum filtration. Thanks to the highly efficient electrocatalysis of Ag NPs towards reduction of azo bond, the as-prepared hybrid paper can be used alone as a flexible sensor for the detection of Sudan I in chili powder, with the high sensitivity (22.93 μA μmol/L) and the low detection limit (41.3 nmol/L). The sensor also expressed good selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, stability and recovery between 96.1% and 101.8% (RSD < 6%). With the advantages of low-cost and scalable production capacity, such Ag NPs/rGO functional papers can be used as flexible disposable sensors for electrochemical detection of Sudan I., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. In recent years, the discharge of industrial waste oil has increased and offshore oil leakage has occurred frequently, and thus water pollution has become a worldwide problem that attracts much attention. In this regard, a kind of oil-absorbing material with high oil-absorbing property and good mechanical property is urgently needed. Here, we reported a new type of aerogels with three-dimensional layered voids using natural bamboo powder, waste paper (WP), and graphene oxide (GO) as raw materials. The obtained aerogel had high adsorption capacity (87-121 g/g), compressibility, and high elasticity, which can separate oil from water and selectively absorb oil. This study provides not only a new treatment in agricultural waste treatment but also a facile, green, and low-cost approach to synthesize high-performance graphene-based oil absorbers, which might give us an effective solution for oil pollution of water resources worldwide.
