Different grain sources of whiskey have great potential for aroma expression. In this paper, four whiskeys fermented from different raw materials (barley, wheat, highland barley, and sorghum) were compared. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and sensory evaluation were used to determine the composition of the aromatic compounds. A correlation analysis was further conducted between the aromatic compounds and sensory evaluations. Barley whiskey and wheat whiskey had more pronounced fruity, floral, and grain aromas, attributed to esters and terpenes. Barley whiskey had the most compounds (55), followed by highland barley whiskey (54). Highland barley whiskey had the greatest number of unique aroma compounds (seven). It exhibited a unique cocoa aroma related to concentrations of trans-2-nonenal, γ-nonanolactone, 1-nonanol, isoamyl lactate, 2-butanol, and 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one. Sorghum whiskey had a specific leather and mushroom aroma attributed to 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, ethyl lactate, ethyl caprate, phenethyl octanoate, farnesol, α-terpineol, 3-methyl-1-pentanol, and methyleugenol. Alcohols were the main aroma components of grain whiskeys. Isoamyl alcohol (231.59~281.39 mg/L), phenylethyl alcohol (5.755~9.158 mg/L), citronellol (0.224~4.103 mg/L), β-damascenone (0.021~2.431 mg/L), geraniol (0.286~1.416 mg/L), isoamyl acetate (0.157~0.918 mg/L), phenylacetaldehyde (0.162~0.470 mg/L), linalool (0.024~0.148 mg/L), 1-octen-3-ol (0.016~0.145 mg/L), trans-2-nonenal (0.027~0.105 mg/L), and trans-2-octen-1-ol (0.011~0.054 mg/L) were all important aroma compounds in the whiskeys. The improvement of phenotyping methods is necessary for large-scale screening studies of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) drought tolerance. The objective of our research was to find out whether it is possible to use chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters instead of biochemical indicators of drought tolerance when screening wheat. We measured shoot biomass, gas exchange, as well as biochemical and Chl fluorescence indicators in 11 wheat genotypes grown under contrasting water supplies and differing in drought tolerance. The effect of drought on the traits was evaluated using the effect of size index. We made two independent rankings: one based on biochemical indicators and the other on Chl fluorescence parameters. The positions of the three genotypes with the highest comprehensive drought tolerance index in the two independent rankings coincided completely. It is concluded that Chl fluorescence methods are suitable for identifying soft wheat genotypes that differ significantly in their ability to activate cellular defense mechanisms. The effect of ultrasound (5, 10, and 20 min, intensity 25 kW/m2, frequency 26.1 kHz) on the dynamics of the activity of the main antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, and the expression of the genes encoding them (SOD-1, CAT, POD), was studied in germinating seeds and wheat sprouts. Ultrasound after one hour predominantly suppressed the activity of antioxidant enzymes, with subsequent restoration and increase (after one and six days) of activity. The content of mRNA transcripts of the studied genes predominantly increased one hour after exposure, and subsequently (after one and six days) it was either higher or remained equal to the control. The results obtained apparently indicate that ultrasound triggers eustress mechanisms; i.e., the stimulating effect led to the mobilization of protective processes of cells, hormesis. In our comprehensive meta-analysis, we initially collected 177 publications focusing on the impact of melatonin on wheat. After meticulous screening, 40 published studies were selected, encompassing 558 observations for antioxidant enzymes, 312 for reactive oxygen species (ROS), and 92 for soluble biomolecules (soluble sugar and protein). This analysis revealed significant heterogeneity across studies (I2 > 99% for enzymes, ROS, and soluble biomolecules) and notable publication bias, indicating the complexity and variability in the research field. Melatonin application generally increased antioxidant enzyme activities [superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX)] in wheat, particularly under stress conditions, such as high temperature and heavy-metal exposure. Compared to control, melatonin application increased SOD, POD, CAT, and APX activities by 29.5, 16.96, 35.98, and 171.64%, respectively. Moreover, oxidative stress markers like hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide anion (O2), and malondialdehyde (MDA) decreased with melatonin by 23.73, 13.64, and 21.91%, respectively, suggesting a reduction in oxidative stress. The analysis also highlighted melatonin's role in improving carbohydrate metabolism and antioxidant defenses. Melatonin showed an overall increase of 12.77% in soluble sugar content, and 22.76% in glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity compared to the control. However, the effects varied across different wheat varieties, environmental conditions, and application methods. Our study also uncovered complex relationships between antioxidant enzyme activities and H2O2 levels, indicating a nuanced regulatory role of melatonin in oxidative stress responses. Our meta-analysis demonstrates the significant role of melatonin in increasing wheat resilience to abiotic stressors, potentially through its regulatory impact on antioxidant defense systems and stress response. Common wheat, consumed widely as a human food is severely affected by biotic stresses. The use of plant beneficial bacteria in the management of biotic stresses is increasing due to its abundance, low inoculant production cost and no environmental risks. This study assessed the impact of bacterial phytopathogen, Xanthomonas sp. on the performance of wheat including phytocompound production and evaluated the biocontrol potential of beneficial rhizobacteria against Xanthomonas induced bacterial leaf streak (BLS) disease. The rhizobacteria, Azotobacter chroococcum Beijerinck, Bacillus megaterium, and Pseudomonas fluorescens produced biocontrol related antimicrobial compounds (ammonia and hydrogen cyanide) and hydrolytic enzymes (cellulase and amylase). In-planta, infected plants had visible BLS symptoms which included yellowing of leaves and necrotic lesions etc. Upon foliar inoculation, Xanthomonas sp. adversely affected growth and significantly reduced dry biomass, plant length, total chlorophyll content and seed yield by 42%, 26%, 59%, and 16%, respectively, over uninfected control. The Xanthomonas infection significantly enhanced the secretion of non-enzymatic and enzymatic phytocompounds, proline, malondialdehyde and reactive oxygen species (ROS) processing enzymes, catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione reductase in BLS wheat. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) showed cellular damage in Xanthomonas infected leaf tissues. The bacterial inoculations profoundly enhanced the biological and physiological growth of stressed wheat plants but significantly declined the production of phytocompounds and the activity of the three ROS processing enzymes. These findings demonstrate that microbial antagonists, A. chroococcum, B. megaterium, and P. fluorescens, endowed with potential biocontrol activity provides a promising option for the long-term management of BLS disease, optimize wheat production and fulfil human food demands. The study's objective was to assess the efficacy and to identify the toxic mechanisms of action of some plant-derived monoterpenes and yucca extract as alternatives to chemical insecticides against the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum. Carvone, 1,8-cineole, cuminaldehyde, and linalool, as well as Yucca schidgera extract, were the control agents whose efficacy against the red flour beetle was tested in the laboratory and compared to malathion. The criteria for evaluating efficacy were the effects of the tested compounds on adult mortality and red flour beetle progeny. Furthermore, the effects of the control agents on some enzymes (Acetylcholinesterase,-amylase, and alkaline phosphatase) in T. castaneum were investigated. Moreover, the effect of the tested control measures on weight loss of treated wheat grain was studied. The tested substances showed a high ability to control T. castaneum with regard to adult mortality and offspring production, especially when used as fumigants. For adult mortality, malathion showed the highest potential against T. castaneum as a fumigant, followed by carvone, yucca extract, cuminaldehyde, linalool, and 1,8-cineole with LC50 values of 0.05, 331.5, 365.1, 372.2, 460, and 467.5 mg · 1000 cm-2 after 72 hours, respectively. The highest reduction in progeny was for malathion followed by carvone, linalool, cineole, yucca extract, and cuminaldehyde with reduction percentages of 100, 90, 89.3,79.4 and 65.8%, respectively. The tested compounds significantly affected acetylcholinesterase activity, alpha-amylase activity, and alkaline phosphatase in the red flour beetle. There was no significant reduction in the weight of wheat grains treated with the tested materials compared to the untreated healthy grains. The varieties of colored wheat registered are very limited, and those available have a low agronomic value. The anthocyanin compounds present in colored wheat vary depending on the wheat variety as well as the growing conditions. Due to their antioxidant activity, anthocyanins are of increasing interest to nutritionists, food researchers and plant breeders. The objective of this work was to determine some bioactive compounds from wheat genotypes H171-I with purple grains and H171-III - with red-purple grains. The samples were evaluated by UV-VIS spectrophotometry for anthocyanins, phenols, enzymes and total antioxidant capacity. The determinations showed that the highest level of anthocyanins was found in the genotype H171-I, followed by Pitar and H171-III; phenolic compounds were present in all wheat genotypes, but unlike the other samples, they were synthesized at higher levels in the genotype H171-I. This genotype also had the highest total antioxidant capacity. Data on the activity of polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase enzymes showed a high level for both enzymes in the red grains Pitar genotype. Immunogenic peptides from wheat gluten can be produced during digestion, which are difficult to digest by gastrointestinal proteases and negatively affect immune responses in humans. Gluten intolerance is a problem in countries where wheat is a staple food, and a gluten-free diet is commonly recommended for its treatment and prevention. Enzyme approaches for degradation of the peptides can be considered as a strategy for its prevention. Here, we isolated a gluten-degrading bacterium, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens subsp. plantarum, from wheat grains. The culture conditions for enzyme production or microbial use were considered based on gluten decomposition patterns. Additionally, the pH range for the activity of the crude enzyme was investigated. The bacterium production of gluten-degrading enzymes was temperature-dependent within 25 °C to 45 °C, and the production time decreased with increasing culture temperature. However, it was markedly decreased with increasing biofilm formation. The bacterium decomposed high-molecular-weight glutenin proteins first, followed by gliadin proteins, regardless of the culture temperature. Western blotting with an anti-gliadin antibody revealed that the bacterium decomposed immunogenic proteins related to α/β-gliadins. The crude enzyme was active in the pH ranges of 5 to 8, and enzyme production was increased by adding gliadin into the culture medium. In this study, the potential of the B. amyloliquefaciens subsp. plantarum for gluten-degrading enzyme production was demonstrated. If further studies for purification of the enzyme specific to the immunogenic peptides and its characteristics are conducted, it may contribute as a strategy for prevention of gluten intolerance. Heat stress is one of the most important environmental factors causing serious problems to durum wheat production in arid and semi-arid regions. Different biochemical and physiological parameters were determined in the leaves of new durum wheat varieties (Triticum durum Desf.) under heat shock stress (40°C) at the 3rd–4th leaf stage to select tolerant genotypes: antioxidant enzyme activities; ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), guaiacol peroxidase (GPX), malondialdehyde (MDA) content, total chlorophyll, chlorophyll (a) and (b) content, photochemical efficiency () and cell membrane stability (CMS). This is the first time that this study has been carried out to test these varieties for their heat stress tolerance using antioxydant enzymes. Results show that heat stress has a significant impact on the most of the measured parameters, increasing levels of (MDA) content and enzyme activity up to 81.41% for catalase (CAT) compared to the control and decreasing the chlorophyll content and photochemical efficiency (), reaches 40% for chlorophyll (a). The lowest level of MDA was registered in the genotype Boutaleb with 1.170 ± 0.23 µmol g–1 FM, whereas the highest level in catalase activity was observed in Boutaleb and Mansourah (0.011 ± 0.001) and (0.009 ± 0.002) µmol min–1 mg–1 respectively, in comparison with the control and with the other genotypes, and the lowest level was determined in Hoggar with (0.002 ± 0.001) µmol min–1 mg–1. Seeds stored for a prolonged period are subject to aging and a reduction in germination potential (GP), which will negatively affect seed sales. Rare-earth elements have a synergistic effect on the improvement of seed GP. In this study, we examined the effects of neodymium on biochemical components, the antioxidant protective system, and metabolism-related enzymes during germination of naturally and artificially aged seeds of three wheat cultivars. Seed germination indices, biochemical substance contents, and enzyme activities decreased after seed aging. Soaking seeds in a neodymium nitrate solution revived aged wheat seeds at an optimal concentration of 20 µmol/L for 8 h. Soaking in a neodymium nitrate solution increased the GP4 (by 2.25–60.9%), germination index (by 1.69–29.2%), and vigor index (by 3.36–18.7%) of aged seeds. Compared with non-soaked seeds, soaking significantly changed the contents of biochemical substances, and the activities of antioxidant protective enzymes and metabolic enzymes in seedlings were increased. Soaking with neodymium may revive aged seeds by regulating the synthesis of soluble sugars, soluble proteins, chlorophyll, and carotenoids and decomposing malondialdehyde in the germinating seed. Root dehydrogenase and amylase showed different responses to the aging modes. The differential responses of root dehydrogenase and amylase may reflect differences in the resistance of enzymes to long-term mild seed aging and short-term severe environmental aging. A traditional Greek sourdough, based on the fermentation of chickpea flour by an autochthonous culture, was evaluated as a wheat bread improver. The dominant indigenous microflora (Clostridium perfringens isolates) was identified by 16S rDNA analysis, and a selected strain (C. perfringens CP8) was employed to ferment chickpea flour to obtain a standardized starter culture (sourdough) for breadmaking. In accordance with toxin-typed strain identification, all isolates lacked the cpe gene; thus, there is no concern for a health hazard. Loaf-specific volumes increased with the addition of liquid, freeze-dried, and freeze-dried/maltodextrin sourdoughs compared to control bread leavened by baker's yeast only. Following storage (4 days/25 °C), the amylopectin retrogradation and crumb hardness changes (texture profile analysis) revealed a lower degree of staling for the sourdough-fortified breads. Modifications in the protein secondary structure of fortified doughs and breads were revealed by FTIR analysis. High amounts of organic acids were also found in the sourdough-supplemented breads; butyric and isobutyric acids seemed to be responsible for the characteristic 'butter-like' flavor of these products (sensory analysis). Overall, the addition of liquid or freeze-dried chickpea sourdough in wheat bread formulations can improve the specific volume, textural characteristics, and sensorial properties of loaves, along with extending bread shelf life. The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that poultry manure and biochar-amended soil alter the antioxidant enzyme activity of T. aestivum L. HD-2967. For this, a box experiment was conducted using poultry-amended soil (5 g and 10 g) irrigated with greywater (50% and 100%) which was analysed on 7 and 14 days of seed sowing. Antioxidant enzyme activity (catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and guaiacol peroxidase) was elucidated to be varied in response to soil biochar and manure amendments both for shoots and roots so as to counteract the reactive oxygen species generated by plants under stress. Also, it was observed to be decreased on a temporal basis. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of supplementation of xylanase and phytase individually or in combination on the intestinal morphology and blood metabolites of broiler chickens fed a stored wheat-based diet. For this purpose, a total of 640, day-old broiler chicks were used with 8 replicates per treatment and 10 birds per replicate in a completely randomized design. Wheat was used as a major energy ingredient, therefore, was designated as a 100% replacement of corn with wheat in the experimental treatments which was 57.52 kg/100 kg feed. Eight isocaloric and isonitrogenous basal diets were prepared based on 1.5-year and 2.5-year-old stored wheat and diets were supplemented with or without exogenous enzymes. Exogenous enzymes supplemented diets were either supplemented with phytase 500FTU or xylanase 500XU alone or in combination. At the end of the trial, the blood metabolites were measured as well as intestinal morphology was evaluated through routine histological examinations. The results showed that combined supplementation of xylanase and phytase in diets T4 and T8 significantly lowered the blood cholesterol, and blood urea nitrogen (P<0.05) as compared to treatments without enzymes or supplemented with xylanase or phytase alone. Low blood glucose was observed in the T1 diet (P<0.05). Better villus height was observed in birds fed with T4 and T8 diets (P<0.05). A decrease in villus height and villus surface area was observed in birds-fed diets without the supplementation of xylanase and phytase enzymes (P<0.05). High grade rock phosphates (HGRP) are only used to prepare phosphorus (P) fertilizers. But the finite reserve of HGRP is pushing the agricultural sectors to use low grade rock phosphates (LGRP) for growing crops. In this study an attempt was made to treat LGRP with oxalic acid and use it as a supplement to P fertilizer for growing wheat in Inceptisol. Incubation study revealed that oxalic acid treated rock phosphate (RP) can significantly increase soil available P status as compared to inert untreated RP treatment. Pot study established that oxalic acid treated RP (@60 mg P2O5 kg−1) under DAP30+ RP60(OA) treatment has supplemented 50% P fertilizer without affecting wheat yields and P uptake. DAP30+ RP60(OA) treatment also had maintained significantly higher Saloid-P, organic-P and statistically at par available P, dehydrogenase, acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase activities as compared to chemical fertilizer treatment (DAP60). Thus it can be inferred that, application of oxalic acid treated LGRP (@ 60 mg P2O5 kg−1) can supplement 50% of the P fertilizer demand to grow wheat in Inceptisol. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the most significant environmental challenges in the twenty-first century is heavy metal pollution. The potential use of fresh Azolla pinnata to alleviate the toxic effects of Cd and Co on the germination measurements of wheat seeds (Triticum aestivum L.) and the biochemistry of seedlings was studied. Two concentrations (80 and 100 mg L−1 solutions) of CdNO3 and CoCl2 were used before and after treatment with A. pinnata. The highest removal efficiency (RE) by A. pinnata was obtained on the fifth day, with a Cd RE = 55.9 and 49.9% at 80 and 100 mg L−1, respectively. Cadmium and cobalt solutions reduced the germination percentage, and the measured variables of wheat seeds meanwhile increased the radicle phytotoxicity. In contrast, the presence of A. pinnata in the germination medium increased all the measured variables and decreased radicle phytotoxicity. At 80 and 100 mg L−1, Cd significantly reduced the fresh and dry biomass, and height of wheat seedlings after 21 days of cultivation compared to Co. Cadmium and high concentrations of cobalt increased the contents of H2O2, proline, MDA, phenolic, and flavonoid compounds. The application of treated Cd and Co solutions by A. pinnata showed a decrease in H2O2, proline, phenolic, and flavonoid compounds levels accompanied by a reduction in catalase and peroxidase activities compared to the control. Pleurotus ostreatus is a widely cultivated and investigated mushroom for its economical and ecological values and medicinal properties. P. ostreatus can be cultivated on different lignocellulosic substrates (oak sawdust, wheat straw, corn cobs and many more). Optimal growth is influenced not only by the composition of the substrate but also by the amount of water in it. In our study, P. ostreatus was cultivated on wheat straw pellets with different water contents (60%, 65%, 70% and 75%). Mycelium growth, biological efficiency (BE), moisture of substrate, pH, enzymatic activities and relationships were the parameters that were evaluated. Based on the results, the optimum initial substrate water content for mycelial growth and BE of the substrate ranged between 65% and 75%. On the other hand, the highest enzymatic activities of hydrolytic and ligninolytic enzymes (Mn-dependent peroxidase, 1,4-β-glucosidase and cellobiohydrolase) were determined for substrates with 75% of water content. Wheat is the cereal most susceptible to lodging, particularly during the flowering period and at the early ripening stage. The use of plant growth retardants (PGRs) is especially recommended when intensive nitrogen (N) fertilisation is applied, which increases the susceptibility of plants to lodging. This paper presents the results of tests into the effects of PGRs (PGR0—control; PGR1—chlormequat chloride (CCC) + trinexapac-ethyl (TE); PGR2—chlormequat chloride (CCC) + ethephon (ET)), and N dose—N0, N20, N40, and N60 [0, 20, 40, and 60 kg N ha−1] on the content of selected plant secondary metabolites (PSM) in the Indian dwarf wheat (Triticum sphaerococcum Percival) of the Trispa cultivar, and on the abundance of insect pests. In the developmental stage of wheat (BBCH 39), insects were collected with an entomological net. The study also investigated the effect of experimental factors on the physicobiochemical properties of the soil (pH in KC, granulometric composition, total organic carbon TOC, total nitrogen TN, fractional composition of humus, and the activity of enzymes). An increase in the plant secondary metabolite (PSM) and FRAP (ferring reducing ability of plasma) contents following the application of PGRs and N fertilisation already from as low a rate as 20 kg ha−1 was demonstrated. A significant positive correlation was noted between the abundance of Oulema spp. and the contents of total polyphenols, chlorogenic acid, and FRAP. No such relationship was noted for Aphididae or Thysanoptera. TOC content was higher on the plots on which N fertilisation was applied at the highest rate and after the application of PGRs. The factor determining the TN content was N fertilisation. Soil samples of the PGR0 N0 treatment were characterised by the greatest proportion of carbon in the humic and fulvic acid fractions and by the smallest proportion of carbon in the humin fraction. N fertilisation increased the proportion of carbon in the humin fraction on the plots on which no PGRs were applied. The study demonstrated an increase in the activity of oxidoreductive enzymes following the application of higher N rates. One of the main environmental stresses that hinder crop development as well as yield is salt stress, while the use of signal molecules such as calcium (Ca) has a substantial impact on reducing the detrimental effects of salt on different crop types. Therefore, a factorial pot experiment in a completely randomized design was conducted to examine the beneficial role of Ca (0, 2.5, and 5 mM) in promoting the physiological, biochemical, and growth traits of the wheat plant under three salt conditions viz. 0, 30, and 60 mM NaCl. Foliar application of Ca increased the growth of salt-stressed wheat plants through increasing photosynthetic pigments, IAA, proline, and total soluble sugars contents and improving antioxidant enzymes in addition to non-enzymatic antioxidants glutathione, phenol and flavonoids, β-carotene, and lycopene contents, thus causing decreases in the over-accumulation of free radicals (ROS). The application of Ca increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes in wheat plants such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT), which scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and relieved salt stress. An additional salt tolerance mechanism by Ca increases the non-antioxidant activity of plants by accumulating osmolytes such as free amino acids, proline, and total soluble sugar, which maintain the osmotic adjustment of plants under salinity stress. Exogenous Ca application is a successful method for increasing wheat plants' ability to withstand salt stress, and it has a considerable impact on the growth of wheat under salt stress. Background and Objectives: Wheat gluten in cereal‐based products has unique functionality derived from its viscoelastic properties. Nevertheless, many food applications require its replacement to obtain gluten‐free foods but keeping similar quality characteristics. This review analyzes the distinctive characteristics of wheat gluten, and the technological strategies implemented to mimic its behavior within the gluten‐free systems. Findings: The viscoelastic behavior of wheat gluten is due to the interplay of glutenins and gliadins after being hydrated and subjected to mechanical stress. Disulfide bonds and noncovalent interactions are key in holding its structure and explaining its solubility and hydrophobicity. Gluten‐free flours and starches have represented the first adopted strategies for gluten replacement, but results have not been completely satisfactory. To tackle this issue, non‐wheat protein addition, physical treatments, hydrocolloids, enzymes, and emulsifiers have allowed recreation of a pseudo gluten network of the cereal‐based foods. Conclusions: Despite technological sensorial achievements, a gap still exists when gluten‐free products are compared with their wheat‐based counterparts. A better comprehension about the combined actions of different processing aids and technologies could offer future answers. The continuous development of bakery products as well as the increased demands from consumers transform ancient grains into alternatives with high nutritional potential for modern wheat species. The present study, therefore, follows the changes that occur in the sourdough obtained from these vegetable matrices fermented by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum ATCC 8014 during a 24 h. period. The samples were analyzed in terms of cell growth dynamics, carbohydrate content, crude cellulose, minerals, organic acids, volatile compounds, and rheological properties. The results revealed significant microbial growth in all samples, with an average value of 9 log cfu/g but also a high accumulation of organic acids with the increase in the fermentation period. Lactic acid content ranged from 2.89 to 6.65 mg/g, while acetic acid recorded values between 0.51 and 1.1 mg/g. Regarding the content of simple sugars, maltose was converted into glucose, and fructose was used as an electron acceptor or carbon source. Cellulose content decreased as a result of the solubilization of soluble fibers into insoluble fibers under enzymatic action, with percentages of 3.8 to 9.5%. All sourdough samples had a high content of minerals; the highest of which—Ca (246 mg/kg), Zn (36 mg/kg), Mn (46 mg/kg), and Fe (19 mg/kg)—were recorded in the einkorn sourdough. As a polyphagous organism, Rhizoctonia is one of the most infectious soil-borne pathogens for many plant species. To reduce this threat to plants and hence provide good quality plant products for the end-user, it is crucial to develop sophisticated and environmental friendly plant protection methods. One such method is biological control using beneficial agents, e.g., microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, but also mites or insects. To investigate the potential of this control, we present here a study involving AG B0 (BNR), which is a binucleate, non-pathogenic Rhizoctonia as a control against pathogens from the same genus, namely, Rhizoctonia cerealis (AG DI) and Rhizoctonia solani (AG5 and AG 1IC). This is novel because the relationship between plant-pathogen and plant-non-pathogen interactions has received only limited attention. Once the relative activities of the various plant defense mechanisms and the overall plant conditions were taken into account, the non-pathogenic binucleate strain was found to lower the impact of the pathogenic strain. We conclude that the response of plant genotype within the context of the protective activity of the non-pathogenic Rhizoctonia is race-specific. It is critical for spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in the semi-arid Loess Plateau to understand the impact of nitrogen (N) fertilizer on changes in N metabolism, photosynthetic parameters, and their relationship with grain yield and quality. The photosynthetic capacity of flag leaves, dry matter accumulation, and N metabolite enzyme activities from anthesis to maturity were studied on a long-term fertilization trial under different N rates [0 kg ha−1(N1), 52.5 kg ha−1 (N2), 105 kg ha−1 (N3), 157.5 kg ha−1 (N4), and 210 kg ha−1 (N5)]. It was observed that N3 produced optimum total dry matter (5407 kg ha−1), 1000 grain weight (39.7 g), grain yield (2.64 t ha−1), and protein content (13.97%). Our results showed that N fertilization significantly increased photosynthetic parameters and N metabolite enzymes at all growth stages. Nitrogen harvest index, partial productivity factor, agronomic recovery efficiency, and nitrogen agronomic efficiency were decreased with increased N. Higher N rates (N3–N5) maintained higher photosynthetic capacity and dry matter accumulation and lower intercellular CO2 content. The N supply influenced NUE by improving photosynthetic properties. The N3 produced highest chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate, grain yield, grain protein, dry matter, grains weight, and N metabolite enzyme activities compared to the other rates (N1, N2, N4, and N5). In this study, the efficacy of different nonstarch polysaccharide (NSP) enzyme sources on wheat ingredients and wheat basal diets in vitro were evaluated by simulating the avian digestive tract. In Exp. 1, pH level was increased from 2.0 to 8.0 by simulating the avian digestive tract. The relative enzyme activities of xylanase A, B, and C and β-glucanase X at pH 3.0–3.5 were higher (P < 0.05) than those at pH 2.0 or 7.0–8.0. The optimal pH levels of 3.5 and 7.0 were screened by simulating the proventriculus and small intestine, respectively to evaluate the efficacy of NSP enzyme on wheat sources. In Exp. 2, wheat 1 contained the highest content of NSP fractions and the lowest digestibility in vitro dry matter (IVDMD) and energy (IVED) in wheat samples. Therefore, wheat 1 was selected for hydrolysis research under different NSP enzyme sources and levels (1,500, 4,500, 13,500, 40,500, 121,500 U xylanase/kg and 250, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 4,000 U β-glucanase/kg) in vitro. The hydrolysis of wheat on the basis of the released reducing sugar content was determined by xylanase sources A > B > C (P < 0.05) and β-glucanase sources of X > Y (P < 0.05). On the basis of the hydrolysis, the optimum dose of xylanase A and β-glucanase X were 40,500 U/kg and 2,000 U/kg, respectively. Subsequently, the completely randomized designs involving 2 NSP enzymes treatments × 2 endogenous digestive enzymes treatments (Exp. 3), as well as 2 wheat basal diets × 2 NSP enzymes treatments (Exp. 4) were used to evaluate the efficacy of NSP enzymes on dietary nutrient digestibility. The addition of NSP enzymes (40,500 U xylanase A/kg and 2,000 U β-glucanase X/kg) increased the IVDMD and IVED of wheat 1 without endogenous enzymes (P < 0.05), while the IVDMD and IVED of wheat 1 with endogenous enzyme were only slightly increased (P > 0.05). The addition of NSP enzymes could increase the IVDMD and IVED of corn–wheat–soybean meal diet (P < 0.05), but had no effect on those of wheat–cottonseed meal rapeseed meal diet (P > 0.05). In conclusion, xylanase and β-glucanase additions could effectively eliminate the adverse effects on wheat and wheat basal diets at the optimal pH levels of 3.5 and 7.0 by simulating the proventriculus and small intestine parts, respectively. In common root and crown rot (CRR), Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sace.) is one of the important in wheat, causing considerable yield losses globally. Sources of resistance can provide a feasible and effective method of control for plant disease management. However, knowledge on mechanisms of resistance is scarce.We screened 33 wheat genotypes against B. sorokiniana under greenhouse and field conditions. In addition, real‐time quantitative PCR (qPCR) analysis using ten novel candidate gene markers, Cre3, EDS1, LTP5, PGIP, PR‐1, PIEP1, TLP, UGT, Stb6 and PFT, was conducted on leaves and roots, along with changes in activity of antioxidant enzymes, peroxidase, catalase, β‐1,3‐glucanase, and phenolic content for their involvement in disease impact mechanisms.Lowest disease severity was in 'Alvand', followed by 'Baharan' and 'Bam' as resistant genotypes. Quantitative gene expression showed that, although the candidate defence genes were upregulated 1.24‐ to 3.5‐fold in wheat roots and leaves inoculated with B. sorokiniana, they were highly regulated in resistant varieties 'Alvand', 'Mehregan' and 'Bam'. Cre3, a resistance gene to cereal cyst nematode Heterodera filipjevi, was regulated in cultivars resistant to B. sorokiniana. Similar results were obtained for Stb6, a gene resistant to Septoria tritici blotch, EDS1 resistant to powdery mildew, Blumeria graminis, and the genes PR‐1 and UGT resistant to leaf rust, Puccinia triticina. Antioxidant enzyme activity also showed the highest increases in resistant genotypes.In conclusion, the T. aestivum–B. sorokiniana interaction in resistant wheat cultivars uses defence‐related genes and enzymes that protect wheat towards sustainable development. Organophosphate pesticides could inhibit the activity of alpha‐naphthyl acetate esterase (ANAE), which could be the fundamental for biosensor applications. k‐carrageenan was used for immobilization of ANAE extracted from wheat‐based sources. The activity of ANAE was assessed for optimum activity at a range of temperature and pH. Enzyme kinetic studies were performed using Michaelis‐Menten kinetic parameters from Lineweaver‐Burk, Langmuir, and Eddie‐Hofstee. The optimization studies showed that the relative activity of the enzyme remained high, even above 50 °C. kd obtained was very low, which indicates the high sensitivity of ANAE towards pesticides. The effects of feeding diets containing sunflower and wheat middlings pre-treated with fibredegrading enzymes were investigated. Based on hatch body weight (BW), 288 Ross-708 male broiler chicks were placed in cages (six birds/cage). Diets were: 1) positive control (PC), a maize-soybean positive control; 2) negative control (NC), PC plus untreated sunflower meal (USM) and wheat middlings (UWM); and 3) four test diets in which USM and UWM were replaced with pre-treated sunflower (TSM) and wheat middlings (TWM) at 25% (NC25), 50% (NC50), 75% (NC75) and 100% (NC100). The pretreated feedstuffs were mixed with 1% of FDE in a ratio of 1:2 w/w for feedstuff:water and incubated for 24 hours at 40 °C, and oven-dried before feed preparation. Diets were formulated for two phases (starter, 0-21 d) and finisher (22-42 d). Diets were allocated in a completely randomized design (eight replicates per diet) and birds had free access to feed and water. Bodyweight (BW) and feed intake (FI) were monitored by phase, and one bird per cage was sacrificed on days 21 and 42 for samples. The BW and BW gain (BWG) of NC up to NC50 were not different relative to PC, but NC75 and NC100 were lower than PC throughout the study. On day 21, liver weight had increased linearly and on day 42, tibia length and diameter linearly decreased with the inclusion of TSM and TWM. The aim of this study was to determine the regulatory effect of different nitrogen (N) fertilizer application rates on the grain N metabolism enzymes and protein content of drip-irrigated spring wheat under the climatic conditions in Xinjiang, China. A split plot experiment was conducted with strong gluten wheat Xinchun 38 (XC 38) and medium gluten wheat Xinchun 49 (XC 49) as experimental materials. We set up seven nitrogen treatments, in amounts of 300 (Nck), 285 (N5), 270 (N10), 255 (N15), 240 (N20), 225 (N25) and 0 (N0) kg hm−2. The effects of N application rate on nitrate reductase (NR), glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamate-pyruvate aminotransferase (GPT), protein content, protein composition, and yield of wheat grain were studied. The results showed that NR, GS, GPT, protein content, albumin, globulin, glutenin, gliadin, and yield first increased and then decreased with the decrease in N application. Furthermore, different responses to different applications between different wheat varieties was also observed. The indexes of XC 38 reached the maximum in the N15 treatment, and the yield increased 2.99~81.45%. XC 49 showed the best indicators under the N25 treatment and the yield increased 0.37~71.29%. Under the same N level, all indicators of XC 38 were better than XC 49. Correlation analysis showed that the yield and protein yield were significantly positively correlated with NR, GS, and GPT. The interaction of N fertilizer and variety had significant effects on NR, GS, GPT, protein content, components, and yield. To investigate the effect of soil Zn deficiency on some morphological characteristics of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), a factorial experiment was performed in a completely randomized design with three replications in a greenhouse. Zn-efficient and -inefficient cultivars were grown in two conditions of Zn adequacy and deficiency and some morphological traits, as well as Zn concentrations of grain, root, and leaf were recorded. Also, the activity of enzymes alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), guaiacol peroxidase (GPX), and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) was evaluated in both roots and leaves at two stages, 30 days after germination (vegetative) and 30% spiking (reproductive). The results showed that in Zn deficiency conditions, the root Zn concentration of Zn-efficient cultivars was significantly (P ≤.01) higher than those of Zn-inefficient cultivars. Also, grain Zn concentration in Hamoon (Zn-efficient) was significantly (P ≤.01) higher than Zn-inefficient cultivars. Decreases in shoot dry yield (12.8%), Zn concentrations of root and grain (18%), and leaf chlorophyll content (54%) in Zn-inefficient cultivars were higher than Zn-efficient cultivars. The activity of ALP, ADH, and PPO was declined under Zn deficiency conditions while the activity of GPX was increased in this condition. In conclusion, the results of this study showed that Zn-efficient cultivars produce better yield than Zn-inefficient cultivars under Zn deficiency condition and are able to store much Zn in the grains. During their lifetime, plants are constantly exposed to varied environmental factors, which leads to an enhancement in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the antioxidant system (AOS) that controls the level of ROS and protects the plant cells. The latest study considered the changes in the activity of several high molecular weight components of the AOS--ascorbate peroxidase (APO), catalase (CAT), and polyphenol oxidase (POL)--in two-week old seedlings of soft wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars under the influence of different (trivalent ferric oxide and aluminum oxide nanoparticles [NPs]). The study observed the activity of investigated enzymes under the influence of several NPs depends on varietal characteristics in wheat seedlings. In the tested wheat cultivars' seedlings, ferric oxide NPs led to a sharp increase in activity of APO in the cultivars Dagdash and Gobustan. However, in the seedlings of cultivars, Sheki-1 and Mirbashir-128, a decline in the enzyme activity was observed. Concerning the influence of aluminum oxide NPs, the study affirmed that increasing the concentration of NPs leads to increase in the enzyme activity, in addition to the activity of APO. The results concluded that each plant genotype has its mechanisms for removing the harmful effects of aluminum oxide NPs, which include antioxidant enzymes. Powdery mildew caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt) is a severe leaf disease in wheat (Triticum aestivum). To elucidate the effect of powdery mildew on cell redox homeostasis in grains, three wheat cultivars with different resistance, Xi'nong 979 (susceptible), Zhengmai 379 (moderately susceptible), and Zhengmai 103 (resistant), were inoculated with Bgt in the field, and the changes in gene transcription and activity of the antioxidant enzymes in developing grains were analysed. The results showed that the gene expression patterns and enzyme activity changes of guaiacol peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), glutathione reductase (GR), and 1‐Cys peroxiredoxin (1‐Cys Prx) were similar under powdery mildew conditions. They increased significantly at 10–20 days after anthesis (DAA) in susceptible cultivars and at 20–30 DAA in the resistant cultivar. However, they showed a significant decrease in susceptible cultivars at 20–30 DAA. The gene expression and enzyme activity of ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR) increased continuously during grain development, especially in susceptible cultivars. The results demonstrated that the antioxidant systems were induced under mild powdery mildew conditions, which was conducive to the synchronous regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, under severe powdery mildew conditions, the antioxidant systems were inhibited and the regulation of ROS was restricted, resulting in the breakdown of cell redox homeostasis. It is speculated that powdery mildew infection can inhibit the activity of some metabolic proteins (transcription factors or enzymes), change the carbon and nitrogen metabolism of grain cells, and further change the quality of wheat grains. Multi-cropping systems play an important role in improving the quality of soil properties. A field experiment was carried at the Experimental Station of Vytautas Magnus University Agriculture Academy (Lithuania) in 2017 to 2019. The aim of the study was to compare agrophysical and biological properties of the soil in the multi-cropping systems of sole (spring barley, spring wheat, pea, caraway), binary (spring barley–caraway, spring wheat–caraway, pea–caraway) and trinary (spring barley–caraway–white clover, spring wheat–caraway–white clover, pea–caraway–white clover) crops. In the second and the third years of caraway cultivation, when solely caraway was grown, the total nitrogen content was significantly lower than in binary and trinary crops (8.5% and 17.4%, respectively). The results indicated that the highest organic carbon content was in the third year of caraway cultivation in trinary crop when caraway was grown with peas and white clover. In the third year, the highest saccharase and urease activity was found in trinary crop where caraway was grown with spring barley and white clover. A strong positive correlation was observed between the content of saccharase and urease and the total nitrogen, organic carbon, and potassium available in the soil. Wheat leaf rust is one of the world's most widespread rusts. The progress of the disease was monitored using two treatments: chitosan nanoparticles and salicylic acid (SA), as well as three application methods; spraying before or after the inoculation by 24 h, and spraying both before and after the inoculation by 24 h. Urediniospore germination was significantly different between the two treatments. Wheat plants tested for latent and incubation periods, pustule size and receptivity and infection type showed significantly reduced leaf rust when compared to untreated plants. Pucciniatriticina urediniospores showed abnormalities, collapse, lysis, and shrinkage as a result of chitosan nanoparticles treatment. The enzymes, peroxidase and catalase, were increased in the activities. In both treatments, superoxide (O2−) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), were apparent as purple and brown discolorations. Chitosan nanoparticles and SA treatments resulted in much more discoloration and quantitative measurements than untreated plants. In anatomical examinations, chitosan nanoparticles enhanced thickness of blade (µ), thickness of mesophyll tissue, thickness of the lower and upper epidermis and bundle length and width in the midrib compared to the control. In the control treatment's top epidermis, several sori and a large number of urediniospores were found. Most anatomical characters of flag leaves in control plants were reduced by biotic stress with P. triticina. Transcription levels of PR1-PR5 and PR10 genes were activated in chitosan nanoparticles treated plants at 0, 1 and 2 days after inoculation. In light of the data, we suggest that the prospective use of chitosan nanoparticles might be an eco-friendly strategy to improve growth and control of leaf rust disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the light of Vavilov's Law, grain traumatization in the standing crop of wheat and other crops due to the enzyme stage of enzyme-mycotic seed depletion (EMSD) was confirmed, the parameters of open and hidden harmfulness were detected, and a scale of plant resistance to such traumatization was developed. The current study demonstrates that pathogen contamination in grains occurs before harvesting and its degree is determined by favorable humidity and temperature conditions and by the open and hidden grain traumatization due to the enzyme stage of EMSD, i.e., the grain's hydrolytic enzymes providing a growth substrate for a fungal spread that is later substituted by pathogen enzymes leading to grain spoiling and self-warming. The most common technique to preserve grain quality is to support a moisture level that prevents further spreading of the fungi. The grains that are contaminated with very low temperature and humidity levels facilitate the germinability and high quality of the grain. The new ways to withstand EMSD should, first of all, include a selection of activities. Using biological, biochemical and physical (X-ray) methods, genetic sources of resistance towards EMSD were found in the VIR world collection that is recommended for further selection. These sources have become a basis for the varieties, such as Moskovskaya 39, Ilot (winter wheat), Gremme and Gremme 2U (hulless spelt), Alcoran (winter spelt) and Kanysh (spring wheat). Sustainable agricultural practices based on the development of native arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can improve crop growth and stress tolerance in acidic soils with manganese toxicity. The beneficial effects are stronger when crops are colonized early in development by an intact extraradical mycelium (ERM), but are dependent on AMF assemblage. In wheat colonized by AMF associated to Lolium rigidum L. (LOL) or Ornithopus compressus (ORN), growth and stress tolerance are differently influenced. In the present study, this functional diversity was studied by evaluating the activity of ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR), guaiacol peroxidase (GPX), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Mn-SOD. ORN treatment promoted higher wheat shoot and root dry weights, a higher root protein content, decreased root APX, GR and SOD activities but a higher proportion of MnSOD activity. Histone monoubiquitination has an important role in the regulation of DNA replication, repair, and transcription in plants. Here, we report the molecular function of wheat histone H2B monoubiquitination enzyme 2 (TaHUB2). The full length of TaHUB2 contains a Really Interesting New Gene (RING) domain and its encoded protein was localized in both nucleus and cytoplasm. We also find TaHUB2 directly interacts with histone H2B in yeast and tobacco. The transcription level of TaHUB2 was decreased as the increased vernalization periods until 50 d. The TaHUB2 exhibited ubiquitination activities and were rapidly degraded in the cell-free extracts with apparently 3–6 h after vernalization compared with non-vernalization. Moreover, histone H2B was mono-ubiquitinated by TaHUB2 and ubiquitylated histone H2B (H2Bub1) level was decreased after vernalization conditions in wheat. A controlled fermentation process using straight-grade wheat flour, commercially milled from a grist of Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) wheat and English wheat, and fresh yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) was found to be effective for developing a naturally derived product (ferment) that could be used for processing bread with the minimum use of dough improvers. The effects of ferment storage, fermentation time, and fermentation temperature on the quality of ferment and bread were evaluated to establish optimal conditions to produce a mature ferment. Trials were conducted on a pilot scale for greater relevance to industrialized bakeries. Ferment was assessed for total titratable acidity (TTA), pH, and viscosity. Breads made with ferment were evaluated for processing parameters, dough properties, and bread quality and compared to a control prepared without ferment. During fermentation, maximum TTA levels in the ferment were achieved at 100 min, then decreased by the end of fermentation, and increased by 24 h of storage at 4 °C. Viscosity was stable during fermentation but decreased by 24 h of storage. Inclusion of ferment resulted in reduced mixing times and improved dough extensibility and crumb softness. Specific loaf volume was not impacted; a slight reduction in crumb brightness and crumb structure was detected. The objective of this project was to determine the impact of feeding growing pigs with high wheat millrun diets supplemented with a multi-carbohydrase enzyme (amylase, cellulase, glucanase, xylanase, and invertase activities) on nutrient digestibility, growth performance, and greenhouse gas (GHG) output (carbon dioxide, CO2; nitrous oxide, N2O; methane, CH4). Three experiments were conducted utilizing six treatments arranged as a 3 × 2 factorial (0%, 15%, or 30% wheat millrun; with or without enzyme) for the digestibility experiment or as a 2 × 2 factorial (0% or 30% wheat millrun; with or without enzyme) for the performance and GHG experiments. The digestibility, performance, and GHG experiments utilized 48 individually housed pigs, 180 pigs housed 5 per pen, or 96 pigs housed 6 per chamber, respectively. Increasing wheat millrun up to 30% in the diet of growing pigs resulted in decreased energy, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) apparent total tract digestibility and net energy content (P < 0.01). Overall, average daily gain (ADG) and gain to feed ratio were reduced in pigs fed wheat millrun (P < 0.05). Enzyme supplementation had minimal effects on the digestibility or performance parameters measured. Feeding diets with 30% millrun did not affect GHG output (CH4: 4.7 and 4.9; N2O: 0.45 and 0.42; CO2: 1,610 and 1,711 mg/s without or with millrun inclusion, respectively; P > 0.78). Enzyme supplementation had no effect on GHG emissions (CH4: 4.5 and 5.1; N2O: 0.46 and 0.42; CO2: 1,808 and 1,513 mg/s without or with enzymes, respectively; P > 0.51). Overall, the carbohydrase enzyme had minimal effects on parameters measured, regardless of wheat millrun inclusion (P > 0.10). Although energy, N and P digestibility, and ADG were reduced, the inclusion of up to 30% wheat millrun in the diet has no effect on GHG emissions from growing pigs (P > 0.10). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
