The objective of this paper is to propose effective methods to implement sustainable development principles among young people, both in schools and universities. The authors of this article recognize the significant potential among young individuals whose actions and choices have a substantial impact on the environment. By analyzing the knowledge and behaviors of young people towards sustainable development and environmental protection, based on surveys conducted among pupils and students from the south-eastern region of Poland, this paper identifies gaps that require improvement and proposes actions aimed at raising pro-ecological awareness among the youth. The analysis revealed that only 25% of the respondents have heard about the "Agenda for Sustainable Development – 2030", 20% were familiar with the goals of sustainable development, and few have participated in initiatives for sustainable development. However, 58% of respondents claimed to engage in activities for environmental protection in their daily lives. The article also presents the degree of compliance with the assumptions of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development on both global and local scales. Furthermore, the paper analyzes two aspects of students' awareness of sustainable development: their knowledge of goals and documents, and their pro-ecological behavior in daily life. Based on the findings, this paper proposes ways to introduce sustainable development principles in selected areas of school and university functioning to enhance ecological awareness and shape pro-ecological attitudes among young people. Sustainable development and the creation of smart, green cities requires cooperation in many scientific fields, including those related to ecology, mobility, or sustainable management, among others. Environmental protection is a particularly important element here. Atmospheric pollution, due to air movements, spreads over very large areas; therefore, air quality monitoring is crucial to ensure protection from harmful substances. One of the most severe sources of air pollution, accounting for as much as approximately 25% of total annual emissions within the EU, is road transport. Therefore, the European Union has set an ambitious target to reduce total emissions to 55% for cars and 50% for vans by 2030. In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become increasingly popular in many scientific fields, including environmental protection and photogrammetry. The use of UAVs to identify harmful pollutants allows them to gain an advantage over conventional detection methods, due to the possibility of remote (therefore safe for humans), faster, and area-based measurements. Given the ever-expanding scale of the use of this technology, this paper presents the possibilities of using UAVs to identify and visualize (map) pollution. The examples presented in the foreign literature, as well as our own research, in imaging the altitude distribution of air pollutants; gaseous pollutants: C6H6, HCHO, SO2; and particulate matter: PM1, PM2.5, PM10 demonstrate the validity of such measures. This research was carried out in the area of one of Poland's key A4 highways. The maps obtained allow for an area-wise and altitude-wise presentation of one of the significant air pollutants in the EU. In addition, they can be a valuable source of information for the implementation of future projects and the improvement of road infrastructure, thus contributing to the reduction of air pollution and the creation of so-called "green cities". Purpose: The main aim of this paper is to assess the impact of environmental taxes on the financial security of the logistics sector in Poland from 2008 to 2020. Design/methodology/approach: We normalize diagnostic variables into synthetic indicators to verify the hypothesis. We use the classical least squares method (OLS). Findings: The results indicate a positive trend in the financial security of the logistics sector in Poland from 2008 to 2020. However, in 2020, there was a certain breakdown in financial security caused by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, environmental taxes statistically significantly impact the logistics sector's financial security (p < 0.05). Research limitations/implications: The availability of data, the choice of normalization method and the estimation method for the model. Practical implications: The research results indicate that the logistics sector should analyze regulations in shaping the EU environmental protection policy, including, above all, environmental taxes. Social implications: Environmental taxes are an important element influencing the development of the logistics sector, including issues related to residents' quality and living conditions. Originality/value: The novelty in the paper is the creation of models of the impact of environmental taxes on the financial security of the logistics sector. Fruit and vegetable processing comes 6th in terms of energy consumption in the agri-food industry. At the same time, 88.4% of the industry's final energy consumption structure is thermal energy, which depends heavily on electricity consumption. In addition, fruit and vegetable processing has a significant impact on the environment due to consumption of significant amounts of water. Reducing these three indicators simultaneously would increase the efficiency of the process while improving environmental protection. This paper proposes neural models of thermal energy, electricity and water consumption for selected major fruit- and vegetable-processing plants in Poland. These models were the basis for formulating a multi-criteria optimization task. Optimization of thermal energy, electricity and water consumption was carried out using genetic algorithms. The optimization results in the sense of Pareto can be the basis for the use of sustainable technology in selected fruit- and vegetable-processing plants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The cognitive purpose of the paper is a synthetic presentation of the achievements on the standards already operating in the sphere of environmental reporting and new solutions contained in the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The utilitarian goal of the study is to present selected elements and conclusions of the environmental reporting conducted in 2021 by companies in Poland and around the world, in accordance with the TCFD standard (The Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures). Design/methodology/approach: Research methods used in the paper include the review of Polish and foreign literature and the analysis of data from secondary sources. The desk research analysis is based on the numerical information contained in the Ernst & Young Reports: "Climate Risk Disclosure Barometer - Poland 2021" and "Global Climate Risk Disclosure Barometer". Findings: The result of the research is, firstly, the presentation of the requirements of the new ESG standard in the field of environmental protection (CSRD), and secondly - the analysis and evaluation of trends in the current environmental reporting in accordance with the TCFD standard by selected companies operating in Poland and on the world market. Research limitations/implications: The presented findings are an inspiration to perform further research and answer the question about the real motives for very limited environmental reporting by enterprises in Poland and on a global scale. Practical implications: The analysis and assessment of environmental reporting allows to determine for which categories of enterprises and for which sectors and economies, environmental protection issues are the priority in their activity. Social implications: The analysis and evaluation of environmental reporting according to the presented standards should contribute to expanding the information base for various groups of internal and external stakeholders about the impact of enterprises' activities on the natural environment. Municipal waste management is an important aspect in the context of the environmental protection of any country. Biowaste is the dominant stream among all municipal waste in Poland (32.4% in 2020). It can be processed through recycling and recovery processes. It is also possible to dispose of it, although according to the waste hierarchy, such action should be the last option. For biowaste to be recycled, e.g., through anaerobic digestion or composting, it must have suitable properties to be processed through the processes mentioned above. This study aims to discuss the selective collection and management of biowaste from Poland's municipal sector and identify limiting factors. The paper also indicates selected aspects of possible changes in the waste management sector, considering the role of society and waste management companies. The factors limiting the collection and further use of biowaste from the municipal sector in Poland can be divided into economic, social, technical, and technological. This article refers to the situation in Poland, but some problems occur analogously in other countries. This is because the barriers limiting the selective collection and management of biowaste in many countries are similar and differ mainly in the degree of intensity and the scope they cover. Given the increasingly stringent requirements for waste management, measures must be taken to achieve the legally required levels of recycling of biowaste and to recycle it as well as possible. In the face of ongoing climate changes and the current geopolitical situation, Renewable Energy Sources (RES) are continuously gaining popularity in many countries. Objectives related to environmental protection and the use of RES set by different countries all over the world, as well as by the European Union (EU), are becoming priorities for many. The increase in the installed capacity of photovoltaic systems has been growing steadily for several years, leading to the creation of new systems accompanying PV installations; this phenomenon has also been observed in Poland. This paper presents a photovoltaic system in the form of a bicycle shed next to a school building as an example of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) without connection to the power grid. It was shown that the energy consumption profile should be properly correlated with the production profile, otherwise significant losses occur. Alternative methods to improve the correlation of production and energy consumption by using SCADA systems or building automation to properly manage the electricity generation and consumption installation were also proposed. Furthermore, it was shown that adopting a fixed discount rate in financial analyses can distort the picture of real profits. An analysis of the changes in the NPV ratio using variable discount rates was carried out when analyzing the entire life of the solar plant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Energy is a key driver of all modern economies. Sustainable development is playing an increasingly important role both at regional and local levels. It is a compromise between social and economic needs and the preservation of nature. In the policy of the European Union, the idea of sustainable development and environmental protection is of decisive importance for the implemented programs and economic activities. Contemporary challenges require the transformation of the energy market towards greater use of renewable sources. According to Directive 2009/28/EC of the European Parliament and European Council on promoting energy from renewable sources, Poland has committed itself to achieving a 23% share of renewable energy in gross final energy consumption by 2030. This goal considers total energy consumption in terms of power, engineering, heating, refrigeration, and transport. The aim of this paper was, firstly, an analysis of the share of renewable energy in the European Union over an 18-year period (2004–2021), with particular emphasis on the position of Poland. The second objective was the analysis of renewable energy at the local level in Poland, i.e., at the local government unit (LAU) level. Changes in the share of renewable energy in Poland compared to other European countries were also examined. The study utilized functional analysis of principal components and cluster analysis based on the data from the Central Statistical Office and EUROSTAT. The study found that while Poland does not differ significantly from other countries in using renewable energy, it does fall below the European average. Principal component analysis suggests that Poland responds adequately to European changes in the share of renewable energy in total energy consumption. This dynamic is stable (over 95% explained by the first component) and applies to most countries surveyed. In addition, the authors sought to answer questions relating to the current status of renewable energy sources in Poland, the barriers and challenges facing the introduction of renewable energy in the country, a comparative analysis of Poland's progress in renewable energy with other global counterparts, and an exploration of the future prospects and potential for the development of renewable energy in Poland. The study found that the potential for renewable energy is greatest in the northern areas of Poland, with photovoltaics and wind power plants providing the greatest capacity. The paper aims to determine the role of the financial situation of production companies in the relationship between their environmental initiatives and their factors of competitiveness. The paper takes advantage of primary and secondary statistical data. The former were gathered using the diagnostic survey method, whereas the latter were obtained from the companies' financial statements. For the analysis of the primary data, structural modeling was applied. The data from the financial statements served to classify enterprises according to their financial situation. The classification was carried out with the use of Mączyńska's discriminant model. The main findings highlight that more positive effects of environmental initiatives, such as companies' increased competitiveness, were observed in cases of enterprises with good financial situations. In addition, a weaker impact of pro-environmental initiatives on the increase in companies' competitiveness was noted in enterprises in poor financial conditions. The results of this research may be potentially applied in those production companies which build their competitiveness based on activities aiming at the protection of the natural environment. They draw attention to the key factors of the competitiveness of enterprises, which are improved as a result of actions for the protection of the natural environment. The originality of the presented research lies in determining the role of the financial situation in the development of the relationship between environmental actions and company competitiveness. Assessing the hydromorphological conditions of watercourses is a requirement of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and national river status monitors (e.g., in Poland,the State Environmental Monitoring, and Water Monitoring coordinated by Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection). This paper evaluates the hydromorphological status of 10 watercourses (30 measurement sections) in Poland based on the multimetric Hydromorphological Index for Rivers (HIR). A new approach to the delineation of the river valley (small watercourses) is proposed. An analysis of the influence of river valley management on the value of HIR and its components was carried out using statistical methods (basic statistics, Mann–Whitney U Test and Ward's cluster analysis). In addition, the relationship between the components of the HDS (Hydromorphological Diversity Score) and HMS (Hydromorphological Modification Score) was analyzed (Spearman's Rank Correlation Coefficient). HIR values for the watercourse sections ranged from 0.553 to 0.825. HDS values ranged from 27.5 to 75.5 and HMS from 2.0 to 17.5. The results of the basic statistical analyses showed slight differences between the two river valley delineation methods. The Mann–Whitney U Test showed a significant difference in the test significance level of the HDS, HMS and HIR for the river valley delineation methods. Spearman's rank correlation analysis showed that most of the HDS and HMS parameters components had a low degree of correlation. The juxtaposition of the two methods for delineating a river valley and its influence on the HIR allows for a better understanding of the interdependence between its parameters. The manuscript presents the current state and proposals for the management of the old granite, quartz, and serpentinite quarries located in the Ślęża Massif (SW Poland, 50°51′51.22″ N; 16°42′26.80″ E), an area entirely covered by forests and protected by various legal protection measures. The quarries are abandoned and subjected to intense natural plant succession, so they are disappearing from the landscape. Nine quarries were analyzed regarding their natural and landscape characteristics. Due to the variety of their sizes, specific locations, geological–topographical traits, and forest and site conditions, the quarries may be turned into tourist attractions enhancing the social function of forests while, at the same time, ensuring their protective functions. If properly managed, they may contribute to the multifaceted development of tourism, performing scientific-cognitive, educational, sports, or cultural functions, and, as a result, to a partial reduction in the tourist pressure on biotic and abiotic natural resources along the presently most frequently used routes. This paper attempts to present arguments indicating that a former mining working site may be a positive and attractive landscape element in harmony with the vegetation cover, beneficial for both nature and humans. Includes the identification and analysis of the vehicle recycling system using the example of buses in consideration of economic and business issues in Poland, specialising in the collection of cars/buses, their dismantling, segregation of materials and secondary use (recycling), given the regulatory changes proposed by the EU. The operations listed are interrelated. Reusing materials identical to their original purpose (including reuse of steel for car bodies) and assemblies from end-of-life vehicles (after possible reconditioning) can be applied as spare parts for repairs, subject to the observance of certain rules and the law. The article presents the results of the analysis of the declarations of the authorities of small and medium-sized cities in Poland regarding the need to implement adaptation measures to the effects of climate change, and an assessment of the adequacy of the planned activities in this area. As part of the study, Environmental Protection Programmes in 80 cities with a population of up to 100,000 inhabitants were analysed. In the beginning, the most important challenges that the effects of climate change pose for cities are discussed. Then the results of the research are described and discussed. The paper ends with a short summary. The obtained results are not unambiguous. On the one hand, it has been shown that the issues of environmental protection and adaptation to climate change are not among the most important priorities of the authorities of small and medium-sized cities, and the way of presenting the issue of adaptation in the analysed documents, concerning the threats caused by the effects of climate change, is not sufficient and adequate to the level of danger. On the other hand, the results show that the importance of this problem has been increasing in recent years and that the authorities of small and medium-sized towns more and more often declare the need and readiness to support adaptation measures. This paper presents the results of analyses that were focused on pollutant emissions from road vehicles classified into the generalised categories with respect to vehicle use. The analyses were performed using the authorised results of Poland's pollutant emission inventory, carried out in 1990-2020 by the National Centre for Emissions Management (KOBiZE) at the Institute of Environmental Protection - National Research Institute (IOŚ-PIB) in order to meet requirements for the national emissions reporting under EU legislation and the UNECE Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution. The following road vehicle categories were analysed: passenger cars, light duty vehicles, heavy-duty trucks, buses (urban buses and coaches) and L category (motorcycles, mopeds, quads, microcars). The emissions of selected pollutants that are harmful to the health of living beings were studied, i.e. nitrogen oxides, non-methane volatile organic compounds, sulfur compounds, particulate matter size fractions, carbon monoxide and lead compounds. The shares of national annual pollutant emissions from each studied vehicle category of the total pollutant emissions from road transport were determined. With the aim to assess trends in improving environmental properties of road vehicles, there were determined changes of the energy emission factors for individual pollutants in all the vehicle categories under the study. The results obtained showed dynamic decreases in the energy emission factors for nitrogen oxides, non-methane volatile organic compounds and carbon monoxide. In the case of particulate matter emission, the improvement was not as pronounced. The evident reduction in the emissions of sulfur and lead compounds in the 21st century was confirmed to be a consequence of practical elimination of these compounds from road vehicle fuels. Developing applicable solutions to urgent environmental concerns, which would reconcile the interests of various stakeholders with regard to the common good, requires the adoption of different perspectives related to knowledge processes. Thus, some authors have proposed undertaking cross-disciplinary, cross-institutional and cross-sectoral research. The objective of this paper is to inquire into the network structure, and investigate the rarely considered interdependence of these three types of collaboration within the environmental conservation field, as it is recognised in Poland. Research grant data from the POL-on database (the central nationwide ICT system) were used, and social network analysis (SNA) was applied. This study is institution- oriented and depended on formal collaboration in the form of partnership agreements, which are rarely applied but benefit the research process. Environmental conservation in Poland is weakly internally integrated, but is well connected with neighbouring disciplines, as well as with the technical sciences. Industrial research institutes, as well as profiled higher education institutions, hold more influential network positions than leading large universities. Moreover, cross-disciplinarity does not offer significant stimulation for cross-organisational or cross-sectoral collaboration. This study is embedded within the specific national context of the science sector, which is currently undertaking a transition period (especially since the most recent reform of the Polish science and higher education in 2018), and the presented results shed light on the present and future challenges which it faces. The work contributes to studies on the knowledge production processes involved in the environmental sciences and provides results that may be used by the science sector for assessing and adjusting its strategic position at both the national and the institutional levels. Purpose: The main purpose of the paper is to assess the perception of environmental reports preparers related to the obligation towards disclosing environmental information from the perspective of the company interests. The auxiliary aim of the article is to propose integrated green reporting in the context of theoretical foundations, in particular the theory of legitimacy, stakeholders and agencies. Design/methodology/approach: Surveys were used to assess the perception of preparers of environmental reports. The empirical data was collected in a non-exhaustive survey. In the statistical analysis of the survey data, contingency tables and association measures for categorical variables were used (examination of correlations between pairs of survey questions) as well as logistic regression models and odds ratios (examination of the impact of explanatory variables on the selected survey questions with dichotomous values). Findings: In the opinion of the respondents, the disclosure of environmental information is useful for stakeholders. They partly agree to extend the mandatory subjective and objective scope of the disclosure of environmental information. However, their opinion depends on some features of the enterprise, capital connections and the type of information shaping the enterprise image. The disclosed environmental information is an important element of influencing the company image, but it is not the most important one. Research limitations/implications: This research is the first, pilot stage of the overall research. In the next stages, the research sample will be enlarged. The second limitation is the focus on Polish enterprises. As part of the research continuation, we intend to cover other countries. Practical implications: Appropriate legal arrangements are needed to adequately enforce the scope and quality of reporting focused on environmental information. The author's definition of green reporting refers to a comprehensive, integrated environmental report combining financial and non-financial information arranged according to the substantively separated areas. Social implications: Our proposed integration of environmental information in one report – green report - that emphasizes the importance of the environmental protection problem, which will increase the transparency and availability of information, and ensure its comprehensiveness for stakeholders, and as a result have a positive impact on environmental awareness in the business operations of enterprises. Originality/value: The research was conducted from the perspective of preparers and managers that disclose environmental information. Our research is the broadening and deepening of knowledge on environmental information reporting in Poland, as well as participation in the discussion on the desired directions of its development. The study’s main objective is to determine the predisposition and challenges of agriculture to provide environmental public goods to society in areas particularly facing natural or other specific constraints (ANCs) established within their current delimitation in Poland. Its organisational features, economic situation, and the degree of interest in measures specifically serving the protection of the natural environment under the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) EU were indicated. Statistically significant factors determined farmers’ willingness to participate in these measures. It turned out that farms from ANCs communes with particularly difficult conditions significantly contribute to the total production potential of agriculture in Poland. However, compared to farms with better natural conditions, they are characterised by a lower income per 1 ha of utilised agriculture area (UAA) and a higher share of subsidies, including those for participation in environmental measures, which were implemented to a greater extent. Based on the logistic regression model, it was found that in ANCs communes with particularly difficult conditions, the most important factor of farmers’ greater willingness to implement environmental measures was their higher level of education. On the other hand, this inclination was negatively affected by the higher income adjusted for operating subsidies per 1 ha of UAA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerous legal requirements regarding the implementation of all kinds of investment projects are extremely important means to attain goals related to environmental protection. The procedures concerning the assessment of the impact exerted by investment plans on Natura 2000 sites, which are discussed in this article, belong to the crucial ones. Their existence in the Polish legal system results from the implementation of Community directives (79/409/EEC and 92/43/EEC). Establishing this type of legal form of nature protection in a given area limits its investment use, introducing the requirement to verify the actions taken in terms of their influence on the conservation objectives of Natura 2000 areas. Confirmation of the negative environmental impact in this respect obligatorily prevents a specific investment project from being undertaken. The described legal procedure serves to implement the basic rules of environmental protection, contained not only in the Environmental Protection Law, but also in the Constitution of the Republic of Poland, which include the principles of sustainable development and the individualisation of environmental costs associated with running a business. The aims of the article are to assess the legal conditions for improving energy efficiency in the energy-intensive food industry in Poland, including the rules for financing enterprises from public funds, and to assess the extent of state aid for these enterprises in their pursuit of energy saving goals. A critical analysis of the literature and of legal regulations on energy efficiency in EU and Polish law has been performed. The analysis of state aid is based on SUDOP data, and it takes into account the time span, the food industry structure, the enterprise size, the type and purpose of aid granted, and the degree of aid concentration. The conducted research showed that the largest share of state aid is received by energy-intensive industries, i.e., meat, fruit and vegetables, and dairy products (65.5%), and by large- and medium-sized enterprises (82.4%). This aid was allocated through various programmes and in various forms, the most important of which were subsidies. The aid focused on three objectives, i.e., promotion of energy from renewable sources, high-efficiency cogeneration, and measures supporting energy efficiency. The study shows the development of legislation on energy efficiency and possibilities for financing investments, both at the EU and national levels. Tightening climate policy will enhance the importance of energy efficiency in the food industry, which should be reflected in an increase in the relatively low current level of this aid (amounting to 0.04% of total state aid and 0.17% of aid for environmental protection and energy purposes). Environmental protection is of vital importance and needs to be considered in the context of business strategies, including companies' reporting decisions. This paper aims to investigate the importance of stakeholders for environmental key performance indicators (KPIs) and the significance of different types of environmental KPIs to various stakeholders. The study is based on a content analysis of the disclosures provided by large public interest companies operating in Poland. The data were processed to produce descriptive statistics as well as classification and regression trees (C&RTs). According to the study results, the sample companies provide a variety of environmental indicators, with a total of 735 KPIs identified. The research confirms the importance of stakeholders interested in environmental issues for corporate decisions regarding environmental KPI disclosure. The study contributes to the extant literature by providing new insights into the importance of different stakeholder groups for the disclosure of environmental KPIs. It may serve as an incentive for standard setters and practitioners to take a proactive approach in further developing and improving environment-related reporting regulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Grasping how individual choices and exogenous factors shape agents' environmental preferences is essential to comprehending societal trends in pro-environmental behaviour. To this end, this paper proposes the concept of "individual environmental capital". It investigates how an individual's past pro-environmental decisions relate to their future ones, particularly in terms of willingness to pay for improvements in air quality. A randomised information treatment choice experiment was conducted in Poland to gauge individual environmental capital, accounting for physical assets and expressed policy preferences. The investigation found that willingness to pay varied depending on levels of prior investment in environmental assets and declared support for environmental regulations. Results demonstrate that highlighting one's past pro-climate endeavours may fail to differentiate the valuation of environmental protection among those who have already invested in environmental capital. Purpose: in the cognitive space, the article focuses on the issue of dynamically growing social awareness of the impact of hard coal on climate change - which determines the need to implement a strategy to abandon this raw material. The authors of the article also point out that in connection with this process - as the world strives for sustainable and more ecological development - the transformation of the hard coal mining sector becomes an inevitable challenge. Methodology: the theses presented in the article were verified using the following methods: literature review, critical analysis of literature, analysis and comparison of documents and an example of good practices. Resultat: properly managing the transformation of the hard coal mining sector is key to ensuring that it delivers long-term social and economic benefits - while minimizing the negative impact of the transformation on mining communities and workers in the hard coal mining sector. Therefore, a holistic approach is important in this space, taking into account the ecological, economic, political and social context of transformation. Originality: the transformation of mining is necessary due to the sustainable development goals, environmental protection and the fight against climate change. It is also a political challenge that requires well-thought-out investments, policies and regulations to minimize the negative socio-economic effects of the transformation and to use the development potential of the transformed areas in all their dimensions. Local authorities are increasingly facing the challenges of climate change, which requires adaptation of various elements of local government systems, including infrastructure, communities and local economies. Operating in an ever-changing reality, local government units should plan for the necessary sustainable local government investments, with particular attention to structural gaps and financial mismatches. Local government is responsible for ensuring local energy security and thus for 'environmental sustainability'. The overall objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of financing low-emission lowering measures from the Environmental Protection and Water Management Fund in municipalities in Lubusz Province in 2020. The article uses cause-effect relationship analysis (regression models). Investments implemented by local governments generally have a positive impact on the reduction of low emissions, although the results of the study indicate a negative impact of financing investments in alternative energy sources (RES). This work seeks to answer the question as to whether the legal orders of Poland and Germany provide an effective framework for energy-efficient and climate-resilient urban space management. To this end, it verifies what similarities and differences exist between certain areas and whether they need reform. The starting point is the belief that legal instruments for environmentally friendly space management are a cross-border issue. Comparative studies are important because effective environmental protection knows no borders, and a lower level of protection in one country or geographic region can affect neighbouring countries and regions. The analysis of legal norms affecting such issues as passive energy construction; prevention of soil sealing and adequate ventilation; reduction of CO2 emissions; promotion of green areas; proper water management; reduction of so-called "grey energy" associated with new construction; the compact city; and a reduction of light pollution has enabled us to synthesise findings into specific conclusions and to propose postulates and directions for further research. However, this does not change the overall assessment that the legal systems of Poland and Germany enable environmentally friendly space management at a similar level, while at the same time, certain additions to the regulations and a further discussion of possible improvements are most welcome and needed. Purpose: In the context of the climate crisis, one of the most pressing challenges the international community faces consists in actions aimed at reducing air pollutant emissions in the world. The objective of the study was to determine the role of voivodeship funds in disbursing funding for air protection in Poland. Design/methodology/approach: The study used statistical methods and the desk research method, which involves analyzing and processing data from existing sources. The analyzed data concerned the number of applications and signed contracts, the value of signed contracts and transferred funds under programs implemented by voivodeship environmental protection funds and water management. The study pertained to the 2018-2020 period. As for the Clean Air Programme, the study surveyed 2018-2021. Findings: The study confirmed a significant role the voivodship funds perform in the disbursement of funding on air protection initiatives. Since 2018, voivodeship funds for environmental protection and water management have been increasingly performing the distributive function. By executing own actions concerning air protection between 2018-2020, they faced fewer challenges than the one posed by the joint delivery of such an extensive programme as the Clean Air Programme with the National Fund. Research limitations/implications: A limitation of the study is the inclusion of data on the programmes implemented only by 12 voivodship funds. Therefore, future studies should be extended to include data from all funds and cover further periods of implementation of air quality programmes by these institutions. However, with regard to the evaluation of factors influencing environmental efficiency, future studies may take into account other variables in the analysis of correlations, both in terms of environmental effects and socio-economic variables. Originality/value: The present study contributes to broadening the knowledge of aspects related to the operation of the voivodship funds, and their role in and responsibility for the implementation of air protection programmes. Urban green spaces are a key element of land-use policy. This paper aims to analyse what kind of green spaces, formal and informal, are covered by documents that specify the spatial development policies used by urban policymakers and what types of data are used to develop land-use policies in towns and cities. The background of this analysis is the fundamental staff analysis in the departments of land-use planning. This article presents a quantitative analysis of a survey conducted in the towns and cities of two regions in Poland, broken down into three groups based on population. This division allowed conducting a comparative analysis of data used for land-use policies and formal and informal green spaces as policy components considered by policymakers. The staff of land-use planning departments is the first line to improve the quality of data connected with green areas use. One hundred and thirteen cities and towns took part in the study, constituting 83.7% of the surveyed population. The analysis shows that the main sources used by those who develop land-use policies are the register of land and buildings, geoportals, orthophotomaps, and spatial data from the General Directorate for Environmental Protection collections. Parks are the dominant form of greenery featured in land-use policies. Other forms of green spaces are viewed as less important. The survey shows that what the land-use policy system needs most is a unified definition of green spaces and that it must be a broad definition of green areas, including formal and informal green areas. Environmental protection is a major task for countries around the world in the 21st century. One of the sources of pollution is the road transport. Therefore, an analysis of the impact of the mobility of Polish residents on the environment was carried out. To this end, a survey was conducted, asking questions such as: the frequency of switching from cars to public transportation, the way of moving in and out of built-up areas, the impact of transportation on the environment, the EURO standard, the purchase of an alternative-powered car and eco-driving. This research was carried out on a group of residents, taking into account: age, gender, place of residence and occupational status. Based on the research, it can be concluded that under the influence of Covid-19. the population is trying to protect itself from contagion, so it chooses individual means of transportation. Simple Summary: This study assesses the state of mercury pollution in the ecosystems of two studied lakes and indicates which species of fish are safe for consumption by determining mercury levels in selected elements of the lake environment. It also examines the impact of selected biotic (length and weight of fish) and abiotic (Hg content, pH, O2 in water and sediment, water transparency) factors on the ability of fauna and flora to bioaccumulate mercury. Based on the maximum residue levels (MRLs), the muscles of pike, bream and roach from both lakes were found to be safe for consumption. No significant health risk was identified based on estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ) and tolerable weekly intake (TWI) values. Mercury, which tends to bioaccumulate and biomagnify in aquatic food webs, poses a potential health risk to wildlife and to consumers of predatory fish in particular. Its concentration in biota can be high even at low environmental concentrations. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine mercury in both abiotic (water and sediment) and biotic elements (common reed (Phragmites australis) and fish: pike (Esox lucius), bream (Abramis brama) and roach (Rutilus rutilus)) in the context of assessing the pollution of two lakes in Poland and the safety of fish consumers. The possibility of Hg biomagnification in fish was also considered. Mercury was determined by means of cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS). The concentrations of Hg in water and bottom sediments of Lake Ińsko were lower than in Lake Wisola. In the bottom sediments of both lakes, a positive correlation was found between the Hg content and organic matter. The concentration of mercury in the organs of common reed did not exceed 0.017 mg/kg dry weight (dw), and its distribution can be presented as follows: root > leaves > stems > rhizomes. In fish organs from both lakes, the average mercury content did not exceed 0.086 mg/kg of wet weight (ww) and in most cases it was the highest in pike. Higher values were only observed in the muscles and skin of roach. This indicates a lack of biomagnification in the relationships between planktivorous-predatory and benthivores-predatory fish. Based on the maximum levels of mercury in fish and the calculated parameters, i.e., estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ) and tolerable weekly intake (TWI), the muscles of the examined fish were found to be safe for consumption. Diatom-based indices are a recommended approach in the assessment of the ecological status of lakes and rivers, required by the EU Water Framework Directive. To optimise the time-consuming microscopic analyses, we determined the lowest number of diatom valves needed to be identified ('counted') in a sample to arrive at a reliable ecological status assessment based on the Polish multimetric diatom indices (diatom index, IO for rivers, and diatom index for lakes, IOJ). We compared the indices calculated with different valve counts. The dataset consisted of diatom counts in 55 samples collected in the rivers Ina and Drawa (Western Pomerania, NW, Poland) and their lakes. Following the method used by the Polish Chief Inspectorate for Environmental Protection (ChIEP), periphyton samples were collected from macrophytes growing in the rivers and lakes, and diatom slides were prepared. Originally, the ecological status was determined based on identifying 400 valves per slide. In the subsequent simulation, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350 and 400 valves per slide were randomly drawn 20 times for each sample and each simulation, and the indices were calculated again. In 87% of our simulations, the ecological status turned out to be identical, regardless of the number of valves identified. However, the standard deviation of the index values was at its highest (> 0.05) with 50 valves, and decreased systematically (below 0.05) for 100 and more valves. Simulated datasets showed logarithmic trend of changes where the compilation and standard deviation was stable above 200 valves identified. Therefore, we recommend simplified methodology for Polish multimetric diatom indices. Reduction of identified valve quantity in a sample to 200 valves would result in over 95% of compliance with classification obtained when 400 valves were identified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although conservation and development are two facets of sustainability, they are often placed in contradictory positions. In this context, planning systems are able to respond to investment pressure, especially in countries with underdeveloped institutional solutions for this purpose, and are consequently characterized by a shifting relationship between spatial planning and environmental protection. Although these issues have been relatively well conceptualized, the literature still lacks more in-depth analyses of selected case studies. In order to fill the gap, this study aimed to identify potential ways to protect the environment and natural values in urban areas from investment pressures in countries with less developed planning systems, based on a comparative Polish-Romanian perspective. The method consisted of comparing the national legal frameworks for environmental protection and spatial development and analyzing in detail two case studies from each country. The findings indicate that national protection is required in both countries to ensure the effective protection of natural areas situated within city administrative limits that provide important ecosystem services. Moreover, the results reveal the need for more research on similar areas using multi-scale interdisciplinary approaches and reviewing planning theory with respect to its efficiency in protecting nature. Background. Air pollution has a negative influence on neurological and psychiatric disorders. However, findings concerning the impact of air pollution on depression remain inconclusive. A deeper insight into these associations is warranted. Objectives. To evaluate the impact of long-term exposure to air pollution on the incidence of depression among residents of 13 counties in the Lower Silesia region of Poland. Materials and methods. We used data on cases of depression from the National Health Fund (Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia - NFZ) from 13 counties of Lower Silesia between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2015. Patients with a confirmed diagnosis of depression were included. Data on air pollution levels were extracted from the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection (Główny Inspektorat Ochrony Środowiska - GIOŚ), and demographic data were extracted from Statistics Poland (Główny Urząd Statystyczny - GUS). Results. The percentage of people diagnosed with depression over the 6-year study period depended on the group of counties homogeneous in terms of air pollution exposure (p < 0.001). We showed statistically significant correlations between different depression diagnoses and exposure to air pollutants. Elevated concentration of airborne fine particles with a diameter less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5) and carbon monoxide (CO), and low benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and cadmium (Cd) levels were independent risk factors for major depressive episodes with psychotic symptoms (F32.3). There was a significant negative correlation between ozone (O3) levels and depression incidence. Conclusions. Regions with heavy air pollution had a higher incidence of depression. Geothermal energy, as one of the more well-known renewable energy sources (RES), is used in many operating installations around the world. Depending on the temperature of the geothermal waters in question, the choices range from installations for generating electricity (high-temperature geothermal energy), to the production of thermal energy for use in recreational complexes, to fish farming (low-temperature geothermal energy). Lindal's diagram determines the possibilities of using warm groundwater for many investment projects. In light of the drive to avoid climate change, it seems that the conventional "one-way" use of geothermal water resources is insufficient. Therefore, this article presents an optimal innovative solution wherein geothermal water is fully utilized in a geothermal cogeneration installation to produce heat and electricity and to provide cooling. In addition, it was proposed to expand the investment with photovoltaic and hydropower plants to ensure greater energy independence by diversifying energy sources and increasing the share of energy supplies based on renewable energy sources. Such a broad approach allows for the implementation of a sustainable development strategy in the field of environmental protection. The proposed solution involves the modernization and expansion of the existing energy generation sources by a heating plant and a geothermal power plant in Chochołowskie Termy (South Poland), as well as the construction of a power plant based on a photovoltaic installation, hydropower setup, and energy storage. The presented innovative solution may be an excellent example of implementation for similar geothermal facilities in the world. The novelty of the system is the approach of assessing and combining the different RES in one project, based on a geothermal plant. Monitoring mining impact has become increasingly important as the awareness of safety and environmental protection is rising. Our project Integrated Mining Impact Monitoring (i2Mon), funded by European Commission – Research Fund for Coal and Steel, intends to monitor the mining-induced impact, in particular, ground movement. The monitoring system comprises terrestrial measurement and remote sensing: levelling, GPS, LiDAR scanning, UAV survey, and SAR interferometry. The aim is to launch an interactive GIS-based platform as an early warning and decision making service for mining industry. This study has developed a scheme based on advanced SAR interferometry to monitor the ground movement over an extensive area at millimetre level. The first test site is a deactivated open-pit mine in Cottbus, Germany owned by Lausitz Energie Bergbau AG. The whole area was reclaimed into a post-mining lake and must be monitored for the safety. The second test site is located in Poland, where the underground mining operated by POLSKA GRUPA GÓRNICZA began in June 2021. We have monitored the in-situ ground movement carefully as part of the influenced area covers the human settlement. The ground movement of our test sites was analysed from Sentinel-1 images. The crucial parameters include stepwise movement series, instantaneous velocities and accelerations, and significance index. In addition, six corner reflectors along with sensors like GPS were installed across the region in Cottbus. They were observed in the Sentinel-1 series and the GPS readings will be used for validation. Finally, all the data will be integrated into DMT's platform – SAFEGUARD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Motivation: Over the past two decades, the world, and Poland with it, has faced a huge challenge of transforming its economy towards climate neutrality. The observed effects of climate change, such as abrupt weather changes (prolonged droughts, sudden downpours), increase in average temperatures, environmental pollution, call for systemic and social actions. It should be clearly noted that the responsibility for actions aimed at environmental protection is borne not only by public administration (central and local government), but also by the private sector, as the one using and influencing the environment. The year 2020 brought an unexpected global health crisis caused by the SARSCoV-2 virus. MFF procedures developed up to that time were modified. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected the preparation of legislation, programs, and rules for obtaining funds from them for project implementation. Many legislative works have been postponed, causing delays. The fact of the pandemic has led to the implementation of the Instrument for Reconstruction and Enhancing Resilience, which includes largescale financial support for public investments and areas such as green and digital projects, in addition to the regular financial perspective. Support will be provided in the form of loans (EUR 360 billion) and grants (EUR 312.5 billion). Aim: The aim of the study is to compare the financial instruments covered by the European Union financial perspectives 2021-2027 with 2014-2020 in the context of environmental funding sources in Poland. Results: Both in the financial perspective 2014-2020 and the new one for 2021-2027, environmental protection issues are one of the main priorities. The continuity of previous structural funds has been preserved and supplemented with new instruments in response to the unprecedented socio-economic situation that has arisen as a result of the global health crisis caused by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. As a result of negotiations, EUR 76 billion will be made available to Poland under the EU's cohesion policy and the Fund for Equitable Transformation, whereas in the previous one the amount was EUR 85.2 billion. The allocation of funds and the directions of spending will not only result from Poland's development needs, but also (and perhaps above all) from the modified priorities of the Union as a response to the health situation of the EU community after the pandemic and the continuation of existing activities related to research, innovation, digitization, climate and the environment. Nowadays, the importance of activities for the protection of the environment is growing. This approach has a major impact on the current energy and mining policy in Poland. On the one hand, the energy policy has imposed several restrictions to which the Polish economy will have to adapt; on the other, however, it raises great social opposition from professional groups that will be at risk of changing or losing their jobs and income, which implies extensive restructuring processes. These processes involve the decarbonisation of the economy and include, among others: sustainable production and consumption, sustainable municipal management and high quality of life in the city, waste management, sustainable transport, and energy management. The aim of the article is to indicate the importance of investment outlays and costs incurred when purchasing alternative fuels that would replace hard coal in Poland. It is part of the process of adjusting to the requirements of the new energy policy adopted by Poland as an EU member. In order to ensure energy security by abandoning coal mining, disproportionately high investment outlays for such a transformation would have to be incurred, as well as significant resources that would have to be allocated in the future to the purchase of alternative fuels. The result of the scenario methods used is the proposition of the proprietary RCAES index, which is to facilitate the transition from fossil fuels to alternative fuels, which the authors will fill in the gap existing in this area. This article attempts to identify the key forces driving the successful digitalization of the energy sector, ensuring improvements in the energy triangle including sustainability, stability, and economic performance. The article sheds light on the diverse energy priorities at supra-, national, and managerial levels, and the role of digitalization in achieving these objectives. Catching up economies (such as Poland), being post-socialist EU member states, in order to transform its energetic sector, must overcome a number of infrastructural and social shortcomings retained as a legacy of the socialist economy. As such, sustainability (as the core priority at EU energy agenda) may not be the leading objective at both national and company level in the energy sector transformation. This article presents the results of empirical research carried out through distribution of e-questionnaire addressed to Polish managers from the energy sector. The results were analyzed using the fsQCA method. The findings suggest that, for managers, the most important drivers of digitalization and transformation of the energy sector in Poland are its high economic performance, together with support for energy prosumers and consumers. The prerequisites for a successful digitalization are alternatively the absence of management barriers, or a combination of high economic performance and a strong focus on environmental protection. Surprisingly, according to managers surveyed, the rapid implementation of new technologies is not considered a vital condition for successful digital transformation of the energy sector, which implies either or managerial lack of knowledge in this area and/or a reluctance to introduce digital rapid technologies. The slow city concept is associated with great care for the protection of the natural environment and the use of renewable energy sources. Thus, the study aimed to discuss the potential of the slow city model and the actual role of Cittaslow local governments in deploying renewable energy, based on the case study of the Polish Cittaslow Network. To achieve this aim, we carried out qualitative and quantitative data analyses, based on literature review and data for all 35 Polish Cittaslow municipalities, retrieved from: (i) development strategies (ii) a survey (iii) the Local Data Bank of Statistics Poland, (iv) the Quality of Life Synthetic Index (QLI). To process the data, we applied descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk test, the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test, and the Spearman's rank test. Findings showed that the support for renewable energy deployment was not at a high level and did not correlate with the goals set in the Cittaslow development strategies. This was the result of a cumulation of pressing social and economic problems, which the local authorities in Poland are legally obliged to solve, while the implementation of renewable energy is not obligatory. The QLI for these municipalities was low and renewable energy was not a significant element in improving the quality of life of citizens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Poland needs to fulfill its climate goals and become "climate neutral" by 2050. The plan is intricate for the Polish Government because coal-powered power plants generate about 80 percent of electricity in the country. Although policymakers are making an effort to redesign the energy sector, a lot still remains to be done. The viral trend in that transformation involves installing photovoltaic (PV) panels by private, corporate, and self-government investors. For example, the "My energy" support program of the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management has helped finance 220,000 micro-PV installations. The achievement is significant but constitutes only partial success. PV powerplants will not simply replace coal powerplants. That is why the research on the ecological distributed energy generation systems has to be executed. The article presents the research results on ecological distributed energy generation systems, making the transformation of the Polish energy sector possible. The study's primary objectives were to review the energy situation with particular attention paid to the technologies that could be used as the ecological distributed energy generation systems and draw the scenarios for the sector development. The authors used Desk research, the Delphi method supported with the Computer Assisted-Web Interview (CAWI) technique, and the Weighted SWOT analysis to fulfill the objectives. The findings showed that photovoltaic (PV) systems would be the fastest-growing energy sector even in the perspective of doubling the energy consumption by 2050. Private investors investing in ecological distributed energy generation systems, especially the PV systems mentioned above, and biomass or biogas systems, would significantly help policymakers, including those in Poland, fulfill the climate goals. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between key sources of air pollutant emissions (sources of energy production, factories which are particularly harmful to the environment, the fleets of cars, environmental protection expenditure) and the main environmental air pollution (SO2, NOx, CO and PM) in Poland. Models based on MLP neural networks were used as predictive models. Global sensitivity analysis was used to demonstrate the significant impact of individual network input variables on the output variable. To verify the effectiveness of the models created, the actual data were compared with the data obtained through modelling. Projected courses of changes in the variables under study correspond with the real data, which confirms that the proposed models generalize acquired knowledge well. The high MLP network quality parameters of 0.99–0.85 indicate that the network generalizes the acquired knowledge accurately. The sensitivity analysis for NOx, CO and PM pollutants indicates the significance of all input variables. For SO2, it showed significance for four of the six variables analysed.
