Introduction: Increasing food and nutritional inequities are apparent in urban settings across Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), along with nutrition transition towards ultra-processed diets high in fat, sugar, and salt. In urban informal settlements, characterized by insecurity and inadequate housing and infrastructure, food systems dynamics and their nutritional implications are poorly understood., Objectives: This paper explores the food system determinants of food and nutrition security in urban informal settlements in LMICs with the goal of identifying effective approaches and entry points for policy and program., Methods: Scoping review. Five databases were screened spanning the period 1995 to 2019. A total of 3748 records were assessed for inclusion based on title and abstract followed by 42 full text reviews. At least two reviewers assessed each record. Twenty-four final publications were included, coded, and synthesized., Results: Factors influencing food security and nutrition in urban informal settlements can be organized into three interconnected levels. Macro-level factors include globalization, climate change, transnational food corporations, international treaties and regulations, global and national policies such as SDGs, insufficient social aid programs, and formalization or privatization. Meso-level factors include gender norms, inadequate infrastructure and services, insufficient transportation, informal food retailers, weak municipal policies, marketing strategies, and (lack of) employment. Micro-level factors comprise gender roles, cultural expectations, income, social networks, coping strategies, and food (in) security., Conclusions: Greater policy attention should focus at the meso-level, with priority investments in services and infrastructure within urban informal settlements. The role and engagement of the informal sector is an important consideration in improving the immediate food environment. Gender is also crucial. Women and girls have a central role in food provisioning but are more vulnerable to various forms of malnutrition. While in developing countries around 50% of total employment are informal sector jobs, and much more among the poorest, its statistical measurement is a major issue. Having long remained a black hole of national statistical systems, sound methodologies have been developed to measure the informal sector in its different dimensions (employment, production, and more broadly articulation with the rest of the economy) in a reliable manner. Taking stock on nearly four decades of experiences accumulated around the world, this article presents a system of original surveys, specially designed for this objective: the Informal Sector Mixed (households-businesses) Surveys (ISMSs). After exposing their theoretical principles, the paper addresses the main challenges of implementation in the field, detailing their advantages and limitations. In particular, we question the compatibility of ISMSs with the recommendations of the new Resolution concerning statistics on the informal economy, adopted in 2023 during the 21st International Conference of Labor Statisticians. We also identify avenues to address a certain number of challenges that still arise with this type of survey, both in the methodological field and on the institutional level. Background: Mental health problems disproportionately affect young people in developing countries. However, there is limited research on help-seeking behaviours and the social support systems that improve mental wellbeing among vulnerable youth populations. Objective: This mixed-methods study aimed to examine the relationship between social support reciprocity and mental health among young informal construction workers in Nigeria, a population at high-risk for occupational and socioeconomic stressors. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was administered to 686 informal workers to measure reciprocity, mental health-related quality of life, and covariates. In-depth interviews with 32 participants provided qualitative context. Results: Quantitative analyses showed 25% of participants reported poor mental health. Reciprocity positively predicted mental health after controlling for covariates. Qualitative findings revealed reciprocity occurs directly between individuals as well as indirectly through trade unions and religious groups. Indirect exchanges through groups helped address limitations of direct support due to limited resources. Conclusions: This study fills important gaps in understanding how social relationships impact mental health in developing country contexts. Findings emphasize the role of collective action and community-based support systems in promoting mental wellbeing among vulnerable populations. The limited availability of formal jobs in developing nations always heightens the challenge for unemployed individuals in securing regular employment. Temporary employment in the informal sector serves as a source to fulfill their basic needs and enhance their employable skills. In this paper, we introduce a nonlinear mathematical model to study the effect of informal and formal jobs on the dynamics of unemployment. For the model formulation, we categorize the labor force into three classes: unemployed, temporary employed, and regularly employed. A separate dynamical variable is used to represent the available temporary vacancies. It is assumed that temporarily employed individuals may transition into regular employment or self-employment. Furthermore, self-employed individuals contribute to generating temporary vacancies within the informal sector. The long-term behavior of the proposed system is analyzed using the qualitative theory of differential equations. A quantity known as the reproduction number of the system is derived, and it is found that the occurrence of multiple bifurcations for the proposed system is influenced by the value of this threshold quantity. Furthermore, we validate our analytical findings numerically. The findings of this study illustrate that an increase in the shifting rate of individuals from temporary to regular employment is not always effective in increasing the number of regularly employed individuals. Additionally, an increase in the transition of temporarily employed individuals into self-employment, coupled with their involvement in creating more temporary jobs, proves beneficial in reducing unemployment. The article analyses the effects of digital labour platforms in a context characterised by high informality, exploring the way platforms may or may not imply a disruption in this respect. To do so, it examines the labour transitions that lead to platform labour, taking into account the formal status of workers before and after joining platforms, as well as their evaluation of resulting labour conditions. The article relies on a quantitative survey and in depth interviews for three on‐demand occupations in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, ride‐hailing, home repairs and domestic service. Results show that a platform's influence on the formal status of workers (and their assessment of it) is highly contingent upon: the platform's business model, including the legal status that may be used to integrate the workforce, the pre‐existing formal/informal dynamics within the occupation and the general labour market situation. This paper examines the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic on the existing health inequalities disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations. It explores the impact of COVID-19 pandemic response measures to "curb the spread" on informal sector workers in Ghana. In Ghana, like many other developing countries, the informal sector was impacted by a higher risk of exposure to the COVID-19 infection and the slew of pandemic response measures, for example, lockdowns and stay-at-home orders, as well as guidelines around social distancing implemented by their governments. Given the high level of precarity that undergirds work in the informal sector and the intersectional forces that contribute to and maintain their marginality—class, race, ethnicity, gender, religion, and geographic location—this paper creates a space for dialogue about the unintended consequences of pandemic response measures on the livelihood security of informal sector workers. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of the shadow economy on environmental pollution and how this effect depends on the levels of corruption. The study utilizes an annual panel dataset of 127 selected developing countries worldwide, spanning from 2002 to 2018, and employs the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) technique, which effectively addresses potential endogeneity issues in the model. The estimation results reveal that the shadow economy increases the level of environmental pollution. Furthermore, the results indicate that corruption intensifies the impacts of the shadow economy on environmental pollution. This highlights a significant complimentary between the shadow economy and corruption, indicating that an increase in the levels of corruption will lead to an increase the shadow economy and will also strengthen its harmful impact on environmental pollution through the channel of corruption. This study identifies the factors that describe informal economies and summarizes them into indices measuring informality. We use data from 189 countries for the years 2015 and 2020. We carry out a factor analysis to identify the variables which structure informal economies and use the scores from a logistic regression to measure the degree of informality for each country. The results show that the degree of informality is related to the level of development. Thus, developing countries are generally those with the highest degree of informality while developed countries are generally characterized by a low level of informality. One of the important contributions of this paper is the method used to derive and then determine the depth of the informal economy in each country from the logistic regressions. Since the informal economy is not directly measurable, we first construct a binary variable named "prior informality." It is this variable that will be used in the logistic regression to measure the magnitude of the informal economy in each country. Thus, we construct a synthetical indicator that takes into account all dimensions of the informal economy with their particularity depending on whether we are in developed countries, in middle-income countries, or in underdeveloped countries. Mathematically, the principal component analysis gives us the best graphical representations of informal economies according to their characteristics. Likewise, the study enables us to classify countries into groups according to the variables that determine informality and draw dynamic charts representing the countries according to their level of informality. This article examines the intertwining relationship between informality and education-occupation mismatch (EOM) and the consequent impact on the workers' wages. In particular, we discuss two issues — first, the relative importance of informality and EOM in determining wages; and second, the relevance of EOM for formal and informal workers. The analysis reveals that although both informality and EOM are significant determinants of wages, the former is more crucial for a developing country like India. Further, we find that EOM is one of the crucial determinants of wages for formal workers, but it is not critical for informal workers. The study highlights the need for considering the bifurcation of formal-informal workers to understand the complete dynamics of EOM especially for developing countries where informality is predominant. This article explains independent Uzbekistan's transformation starting from its integration into the global economy as a primary commodity exporter. It argues that, in line with other resource-rich countries of the Global South, this transformation exhibited two enduring and interlinked features, namely rent-subsidised 'backward' industrialisation and the rise of a vast relative surplus population (RSP). First, the end of collective agriculture expropriated most of the Uzbek rural population from the land, so rents from cotton exports could subsidise 'backward' industries manufacturing for the domestic market. Second, as these industries could only absorb a minority of the population due to their limited (largely domestic) scale of production, the majority was turned into a vast RSP that struggles in the informal sector, including as labour migrants. Third, cotton's replacement by gold and natural gas as the main export commodities laid the basis for the current liberalisation. Still, Uzbekistan endures as a raw material exporter, hence as a 'backward' industrialiser and reservoir of RSP. As such, the paper problematises the transition literature's framing of Uzbekistan as an example of failed reform or successful developmentalism, showing instead how these enduring features of its development paralleled similar dynamics in other raw-material-exporting countries of the Global South. Considering the ongoing, record‐setting migration in the Global South, this paper explores the values, principles and ethical tensions of Venezuelan migrants in the informal economy of Colombia. We found that migrants frequently prefer to stay within the informal economy as a way of preserving their identities, values and principles, rather than adopting those of their new country. This choice sets up ethical tensions for the migrants and their host countries. Our analysis challenges the current policy goals of transitioning migrants from informal to formal economies as a mark of success and inclusion. Instead, we attempt to recognize the migrant voice and their agency capacity through our research using focus groups and applied thematic analysis (ATA) of popular music and narratives. Our findings broaden the understanding of why migrants choose to stay in the informal economy and challenge policy goals that focus on inclusion and integration of migrants into formal economy. Most governments around the world are fostering innovation and entrepreneurial systems with a prominent role for venture capital (VC) support policies. However, the debate about the role and impact of VC support policies is still focused on the countries of the Global North. In this context, this paper seeks to describe and analyse the role that the state has played in the emergence and development of the VC industry in India and Brazil, two of the biggest economies of the Global South. We adopt a systemic and evolutionary perspective under the general context of a renewed role for the state in financing innovation. We offer interesting questions and implications to discuss the challenges, scale and impact that could be expected from VC industry support policies in the Global South countries. Unsafe water reuse in the informal irrigation sector dominates in the Global South and requires more attention to protect food safety and public health. Promoting formal wastewater use in conjunction with (usually constrained) investment in treatment capacities is not sufficient in LMIC. New approaches and indicators are needed across the formal and informal reuse sectors to increase food safety and monitor progress on safe reuse. Homeworkers form a significant part of the informal economy in the global South, are over-represented by women, and are defined by their place of work, that is, their 'home'. As production and social reproduction intersect in the private sphere of the home, a woman's mobility and access to public spaces is limited and gendered. Within this reality, in the narrow streets of the small town of Ambur in Southern India, women homeworkers stitching leather footwear access 'public' entities through their 'thinna': a porch/veranda-like structure at the entrance of the house. This article explores thinna as a quasi-public space, arguing that even while spatially attached to a private home, it allows women to place themselves and to participate in the realm of the public. Based on in-depth interviews with 62 homeworkers, I show that women homeworkers utilise the thinna to make themselves 'visible' – physically, socially, economically, and politically. They sit here not only for better lighting but also to chat with neighbouring homeworking women, thereby keeping themselves informed on what other women are stitching and their piece rates. They engage economically with the contractor(s), using it to showcase their stitching skills. Here, a local civil society organisation convenes meetings to organise them and here leather company representatives 'visit' homeworkers. The view of informal employment as a last resort in the labour market has recently been challenged by numerous studies documenting the existence of a high degree of heterogeneity within the formal and informal sectors. In particular, informal self‐employment/employment may be voluntary or forced. There is currently not much theoretical support for these observations. We develop a theoretical model of the labour market with both formal and informal firms and a distribution of managerial skills in the population. When seeking to increase their tax revenues, policy makers face a likely tradeoff between decreasing personal income tax rates (making formalizing more attractive and potentially contributing to revenue) and alternatively raising tax rates (potentially slowing down the formalization of the economy if people prefer informal employment). Evidence on formal versus informal earnings and job characteristics in different sectors is limited in African countries, and in particular very little is known about the impact of tax changes on the extent of informality. This paper therefore estimates the personal income tax responsiveness of the extensive margin of formality, i.e. the propensity to be a formal as opposed to an informal worker, for Ghana, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, using repeated cross-sections of household data and applying grouping estimator techniques. Perhaps because of labour demand constraints and other frictions, the paper finds non-significant relations between the formal employment share and the formal-informal earnings differences. Numerous structural vulnerabilities put developing regions at a disadvantage as they confront the prospect of increasingly frequent extreme shocks. Typical of these regions, South Asia had several characteristics that suggested it would be badly hit by COVID‐19: a sizeable informal sector, growing inequalities in access to health services and social protection, and high levels of hunger and malnutrition. This Special Issue focuses on the South Asian experience through COVID‐19 and distills forward‐looking lessons for the developing world. Included papers point to the importance of strengthening individual resilience, building basic infrastructure and institutional capacity, and implementing inclusive social protection measures. The histories of Business Schools (BS) are usually produced from U.S.-centric perspectives. Seeking to recenter the Global South in the making of these histories, this paper aims to analyze the history of BS in Brazil via dependency studies. Dependency is the condition of a hierarchical relationship between two or more economies that become entangled for the benefit of the richer countries. Dependency studies aim to examine dependent conditions prevailing since colonial times to overcome them. We analyze the creation and dissemination of five BS from 1937 to 1961, a period marked by the emergence of the first undergraduate courses in the field and a heavy push towards industrial development in the country. We argue that dependency macro factors were the main drivers behind the creation, implementation, and dissemination of BS in Brazil. We posit local agents performed dependency ambiguity, that is, exploring context drivers within the Brazilian technological-industrial dependency and seeking external support to establish early BS in the country. We claimthat through dependency lenseswe can reposition the narratives about the development of BS in the Global South away from a U.S.-centric explanation, emphasizing the role of local contextual factors and actors within Global South countries dependency longue duree. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) principles have emerged as the template for e-waste policies, centered on establishing regulated collection and recycling channels. Originating in the global North, these policies are increasingly adopted in the global South where e-waste is primarily 'managed' by the informal sector, centered in spatially defined hubs. These formal systems fail to achieve collection quotas, while further marginalizing informal recyclers by delegitimizing their access to e-waste. We suggest an alternative hub-centered approach to e-waste reform based on eight years of research and advocacy within the Israel-West Bank e-waste system. We offer several converging rationales for centralizing hubs in e-waste policies and a case study demonstrating an integrated hub-driven package of business, enforcement, and cleanup measures. While the unique complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian case offer an exceptional window into the dynamics of a hub-driven approach, similar packages might shape e-waste policy reform throughout the global South. Research presents the informal economy as a fading phenomenon mainly confined to the peripheries of mainstream economics. However, such views overlook its transformative effect on the social and economic spheres of many regions of the developing world through employment creation. Drawing from a new dataset combining World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Africa Index databases, this study examines the effect of country-level variables (informal economy size, economic and sustainable development) on economic and social change in twenty sub-Saharan African nations. Results reveal that informal work and informal business sustain livelihoods by providing income that helps tackle poverty, malnutrition and mortality rates. Municipal solid waste (MSW) is a complex challenge to be solved worldwide, intensified in developing countries since in addition to economic and environmental aspects there is also the social aspect represented by the collector individual. From an integrative bibliographic review this study longitudinally analyses the socio-productive inclusion of collectors in the municipal solid waste management (MSWM) at an international level. Aiming: (a) to identify relevant articles describing/studies on MSWM with social inclusion of scavengers around the world; (b) to analyse these articles in order to present its main characteristics; (c) to describe municipal solid waste management with recyclable potential (MSWRP) with socio-productive inclusion of collectors; (d) the study provides a more detailed summary of MSWRP management in some developing countries: Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria and Pakistan; and (e) to provide a framework indicating the future practices and perspectives of MSWRP. As result, this study presents the paradigms and future questions for an effective improvement of WSWM, such as: Professional Training of Scavengers, Cultural Issues, Empowerment of Scavenger, Recycling Cooperatives and Cooperativism, Policy Issues and Recycling Chain, Management Systems and Process Improvement, Quality of Services Provided, Circular Economy and Informal Sector, Health Quality and Safety at Work, Barriers and Solutions for the Inclusion of the Informal Sector, Environmental, Economic and Social Benefits. Young people face enormous difficulties in finding decent jobs both in developed and developing countries. The estimates indicate that 68 million young people globally are looking for a job; 123 million are working but living in poverty; and 270 million are not in employment, education, or training (NEET). Many young people are also underemployed, inadequately paid, and working in the shadow economy. Earlier research finds that structural problems of the labor market and the education system, individual characteristics, and crimes (such as theft or robbery) influence job opportunities for young people. However, previous studies disregard the potential consequences of organized crime (OC) on the quality of jobs for youth. This gap is surprising as OC is a transnational problem. It manages illicit activities producing between 2 % and 5% of the world's GDP, and 79.2% of the global population lives in high-level criminal countries. Thus, this study aims at quantifying the impact of the presence of OC on decent jobs for youth. I conduct a quantitative cross-sectional case study of 106 Italian provinces, using the Synthetic Index of Mafia Presence developed by the Bank of Italy and several indicators to measure the quality of jobs for people aged 15-34, 15-24, and 25-34. The results of the OLS analysis are robust to alternative measurements and control variables. The evidence demonstrates that where the mafia is more present, regular employment, average hourly wages, and labor participation are lower, while irregular employment is higher, especially among 25-34 years old. Purpose: This study examines whether institutional quality affects the relationship between income inequality and entrepreneurial activity. The authors specifically examine whether the greasing or sanding effect holds for the relationship between income inequality and entrepreneurship, while moderating for institutional quality. The greasing effects suggest that income inequality can promote entrepreneurial activity, while the sanding effects disincentivise it. Design/methodology/approach: The authors examine this relationship using a sample of 100 advanced and developing countries from 2006 to 2018 using a dynamic panel estimator to control endogeneity and simultaneity. Additionally, the authors include an interaction term to estimate the marginal effects of income inequality, while moderating for institutional quality. Furthermore, the authors differentiate between six measures of institutional quality. Findings: Overall, the authors find that institutional quality and income inequality have a positive and significant impact on entrepreneurial activity. However, when moderating for institutional quality, the findings show that the marginal impact of income inequality is negative for countries with low levels of institutional quality. The authors show that the rule of law and government effectiveness are effective moderators in terms of magnitude. Furthermore, the authors find that the sanding effect of income inequality is observed in developing economies, even when moderating for institutional quality. Research limitations/implications: The major limitation lies in the estimation of entrepreneurial activity, which is measured using new business formation. While this is commonly used, it focuses on formal entrepreneurial activities and overlooks the informal economy. Originality/value: This study provides new empirical evidence on whether institutional quality can moderate and explain the puzzling link between entrepreneurial activity and income inequality. Informal ready-to-eat food vending is an important, cheap, convenient, accessible and readily available urban food supply sector that has become an increasingly important part of the diets of people in developing cities in Africa and throughout other contexts in the Global South. Over decades, despite challenges associated with health and hygiene, street foods have been informally accepted as part of the urban food supply system, particularly among the urban poor. Despite the importance of street foods to food security and employment needs in urban Nigeria and elsewhere, very little is known about the governance arrangements (whether formal or informal) revolving around their food provisioning practices. The paper explores governance arrangements that steer and shape food provisioning practices in Ibadan, Nigeria. Taking a social practice approach, the paper analyses the interconnections between governance and ready-to-eat food vending practices. It doing so, it draws on insights generated through a qualitative study incorporating in-depth interviews and participant observation methods to understand different governance arrangements revolving around food vending practices. The findings reveal that formal and informal governance structures are jointly steering and shaping practices of informal ready-to-eat food vending. They furthermore highlight the crucial role informal middlemen fulfill in informal food governance chains. These insights provide new avenues for thinking about food governance of urban food supply systems in terms of co-governance between formal and informal actors. They also provide empirical evidence that can aid policy application and implementation on urban food supply systems going forward. The paper concludes by discussing the potential of a co-governance informal food sector framework that recognizes and encompasses the formal-informal nature of the food sector. Such an approach recognizes and involves informal middlemen in the governance of informal ready-to-eat street food vending embedded in a larger framework of food system governance. Amid renewed debates and theorizing about informality and the role of informal workers in Africa and across the globe, there remains little in the way of class-based understandings of Africa's informal workers and of informal worker politics. Marxists, especially Analytical Marxists, have been slow to study and consider the role and potential role of informal workers in geopolitics and class struggle across the Global South, and Africa, in particular. Drawing on ethnographic field work and interviews conducted in Sierra Leone, and broader informal worker-led struggles and events across Africa and the Global South, this work argues for a renewed understanding of collective action and class formation among informal workers. Most previous studies that examined the relationship between the size of shadow economy and the pillars of sustainable development maintained that this relationship is linear. This paper provides an empirical contribution to the literature by arguing that this relationship is likely to be nonlinear, and it might be subject to threshold effects. For this purpose, in addition to the static threshold panel model of Hansen (1999. "Threshold Effects in Non-dynamic Panels: Estimation, Testing, and Inference." Journal of Econometrics 93 (2): 345–68), the dynamic panel threshold model suggested by Seo and Shin (2016. "Dynamic Panels with Threshold Effect and Endogeneity." Journal of Econometrics 195 (2): 169–86) has been applied to a larger panel-data set covering 83 developed and developing countries over the 1996–2017 period. Empirical results from both models yield evidence advocating the existence of threshold effects of the shadow economy on the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development for the global sample as well as the sub-samples of developed and developing countries. Moreover, for the global sample and developing countries, our findings show that shadow economy would spoil the three sustainable development pillars only when its size exceeds a certain threshold critical size. While, the impact for developed countries was found negative even for low levels of underground activities. These finding are shown to be robust to alternative proxies for the size of the shadow economy and have important policy implications, especially for developing countries. In these countries, a moderate size of the shadow economy might have positive spillovers on long-term growth and sustainable development. Our research also suggests that, for developing and developed countries to achieve sustainable goal 8.3, the extent of the shadow activities should be taken into account. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study aimed at the championship season on the subject of the study, which is the hidden economy or the informal economy. By focusing on some of the issues in this topic that formed the problem of the study; They are the economic and social effects of this type of economic activity, with a statement of methods for estimating this type of economic practice. The study aimed to draw attention to the reality of this activity in selected countries, with reference to the Arab countries in particular and the developing world in general. In order to achieve the objectives of this study, the analytical descriptive approach was used, with an explanation of the methodologies, methods, and methods that are used to estimate the size of the shadow economy in different countries. The study concluded that the economy is still and whatever positives it presents, it remains a human activity fraught with dangers and has negative effects that cannot be ignored on the formal economy, and this is indicated by the current study. MSWM is a significant issue in developing countries worldwide. The research aims to determine the problems and total/per capita waste generations and address some of the research shortage regarding MSWM in the Dadu. A structured close-ended questionnaire survey has been used, whereas interviews have been designed to ask officials regarding the MSWM. SPSS and ArcGIS software were use for the analysis of data. To evaluate the policies designed for MSWM and the study area's existing situation, the 'wasteaware' benchmark indicator framework technique is used. The results revealed that the MSW generation is 117 tons/d, which equals 0.62 kg/cap/day and illustrates the weak system. The inhabitants of Dadu MC generate 59% organic waste. It has been observed that all services of MSWM are provided by the public sector, with zero contribution from the informal sectors, and require improvements in management and physical infrastructure. The entrepreneurial perspective and "legalist" view of informality suggests that many informal firms can compete with formal firms, and often "unfairly" so because informal firms do not pay taxes or comply with costly regulations that formal firms must shoulder. Thus, informal firms can negatively impact the performance of formal sector firms in critical areas such as jobs creation. A rigorous empirical analysis of such impact, however, is limited, and almost non-existent for jobs creation. This paper contributes to the literature by estimating the impact of competition from informal firms on the growth rate of employment of formal manufacturing SMEs in 109 developing and emerging economies. Methodologically, the paper contributes by drawing on several theoretical predictions of the entrepreneurial perspective and "legalist" view of informality as a defense against endogeneity concerns. The results show that the growth rate of employment among formal sector manufacturing SMEs declines by 1 percentage point for each one standard deviation increase in informal competition. This adverse effect is bigger in countries where the business environment is less favorable to operating in the formal vs. the informal sector. Our findings have important policy implications given the shortage of high-paying formal sector jobs in most developing countries. Our results indicate that informal sector is less effective in alleviating jobs scarcity than previously thought; informality may reduce the availability of high-productivity formal manufacturing jobs; policies supporting informal sector must distinguish between informal firms that compete more vigorously against formal firms from the rest to minimize the harmful effect of informality on jobs growth in the formal sector; and a better business environment is important for ensuring greater harmony between formal SMEs and informal firms in the manufacturing sector. Plain English Summary: Informal sector hurts the growth of good manufacturing jobs. The informal or unregistered sector is credited with providing jobs to millions of individuals around the globe. While the sector harbors some portion of opportunity-led entrepreneurs who are successful in terms of income, most jobs in the sector are low paying and have low productivity when compared to jobs in the formal or registered sector. The relatively high-paying and high-productivity jobs in the formal sector can be adversely affected by competition from informal sector. One reason for this is that informal firms do not pay taxes or comply with costly regulations that most formal firms must shoulder. This allows many non-complying informal firms to steal market share from the formal firms, undermining the latter's growth. Using firm-level survey data for 109 developing and emerging countries, this paper finds that competition from informal firms indeed reduces the growth rate of employment among formal manufacturing SMEs. As expected, this adverse effect is much larger when the cost of operating in the formal vs. informal sector is higher and the benefits lower. The finding has several important implications for policies on jobs availability, formalization of the informal sector, and overall development. This short essay explores some of the issues at stake when science and technology studies (STS) are situated within a global frame. Global, in this reading, is both historical and aspirational. As historical, it rejects the East-West dichotomy, insisting instead on one world as the outcome of multiple unequal and uneven world-making processes. As aspirational, to consider what a global STS would look like this essay imagines a world where technology studies were invented in the megacities of the Global South. At once it becomes clear that familiar concepts need revision: illegibility gets added to legibility, repair and dismantling join production and construction, permanence and impermanence occupy the same register of privilege. Making particular what had been considered general forces a reconsideration of the objects, methods, boundaries and histories of our studies. This is further demonstrated by a comparison of hybridity/isation as it is understood respectively in STS and post-colonial studies. What becomes apparent is the relative absence of violence as a core STS concept, notwithstanding its centrality in the making of the modern world. Competition from informal firms is an important issue that face most formal firms in developing countries. It usually leads to market share losses in formal firms and weakens their self-financing capacity. Recently, a stream of literature has been developed concerning its impact on the outcomes and strategic choices of formal firms. This paper contributes to this literature by investigating the effect of the Competitive Pressure from the Informal Sector (CPIS) on the research and development (R&D) investment of formal firms using firm-level data from Côte d'Ivoire. It emerges that the CPIS incites formal firms to engage more in R&D when it constitutes a problem, but not a severe one, for them in conducting their activities, which implies a positive effect. The present analysis has examined the effect of the shadow economy on tax reform in developing countries. The first type of tax reform is the "structural tax reform" (STR) characterized by large episodes of tax revenue mobilization, identified by Akitoby et al. (2020) [Tax revenue mobilization episodes in developing countries, Policy Design and Practice 3: 1–29] using the narrative approach that allows obtaining the precise nature and exact timing of major tax actions in several areas of tax policy and revenue administration that truly led to increases in tax revenue. The second type of tax reform is referred to as "tax transition reform" (TTR) and reflects the reform of the tax revenue structure that involves the reduction of its dependence on international trade tax revenue at the benefit of domestic tax revenue. The analysis has used various estimators and shown that the shadow economy reduces the likelihood of STR (notably in low-income countries), including in several tax policy areas and in the revenue administration area. The shadow economy also undermines the TTR process in countries whose tax revenue structure is strongly dependent on international trade tax revenue. Despite the increasing size of the shadow economy worldwide, more particularly for developing economies, limited scientific attention has been devoted to exploring its diverse impacts, such as the harmful environmental issues that could arise from informal activities. This study aims to investigate ICT impacts of the shadow sector on the environment using two-step system GMM method for two panels of 57 developing and 34 developed nations, spanning the years from 1998 to 2015. Two measures for the dependent variable are used: CO2 emissions from transport activity and liquid energy demand. The size of the shadow economy and ICT are used as independent variables. The empirical evidence suggests four main results. First, the shadow economy harms the environment in the context of developed nations; however, it can reduce environmental degradation in developing economies. Second, ICT hurts the environment for all countries except telephone usage, which favors ecological quality in developing economies. Third, the association between ICT and the shadow economy positively affects the environment in developed countries, but it becomes very weak in developing ones. Fourth, the telephone is the most efficient technology for reducing air pollution in developed economies when adopted in the shadow sector. Public policy should encourage the adoption of new technologies in the shadow sector and the regularization of informal activities in developed economies to mitigate carbon emissions. Recent studies found that tourism can mitigate the shadow economy, but its effectiveness in a specific country remains uncertain. To fill the research gap, this study investigates the relationship between tourism and the shadow economy in China based on province level data for 2000-2016. The results reveal that the shadow economy will be adversely affected by tourism. Moreover, regional heterogeneity analysis indicates that in central and western regions of China, tourism is more effective in suppressing shadow activities. Product design is a key aspect of human intelligence and creativity, attracting not only experts but also people without any formal design training. Although numerous people in developing countries design and manufacture products in metalworking microenterprises in the informal sector, there is still little knowledge about their design process. This paper aims to fill this gap in design knowledge. We aim to investigate the design processes in metalworking microenterprises in the informal sector of Tanzania. In particular, we aim to explore how these microenterprises identify consumer needs and requirements, how they determine the specifications for the product, how they generate and evaluate alternative product concepts, and how they define product details. To address these aims, semistructured interviews were carried out in metalworking microenterprises operating in the informal sector of Tanzania. In this expository essay, we argue for building a fresh research programme in the political economy of development to analytically investigate and empirically substantiate the specificities of postcolonial capitalism. A key theoretical framework developed through the work of Kalyan Sanyal may be built upon, reformulated and productively deployed for this purpose. We provide a purposive engagement with this framework, its critiques, and the extant literature that develops it further. Some illustrations based on the agricultural and non-agricultural informal economies in India are provided to highlight the significance of this framework in examining the contemporary processes of capitalist development in the global South. The informal segments are marked by a persistence and reproduction of large swathes of non-capitalist economic spaces that are majorly structured around the logic of satisfying consumption needs, without discernible tendencies towards a classical pattern of capitalist transition. These spaces act as holding grounds of the population that is excluded from the capitalist growth poles of the economy and are often rendered as an undesired excess (as a surplus population) for the process of capitalist reproduction. Such a framework may also provide a compelling theoretical structure to interrogate the vast economic and political changes in the global landscape in the current conjuncture, and their implications for labour. Most of the poor in the developing world work in the informal economy, that is, in occupations that take place outside of the legal system of taxing, spending, and regulating. This article examines how informal work impacts the policy and electoral preferences of the poor. We emphasize the importance of the risks inherent in informal employment in shaping the responsiveness of citizens to clientelism and their policy and voting preferences. Since most informal workers are not covered by (formal) social insurance, they prefer material goods and candidates that produce targeted, clientelistic benefits rather than programmatically delivered insurance that is unlikely to reach them. As a result, we argue that informal workers are more likely to rely on clientelistic relations as a means of hedging risks than are formal workers; prefer policies that are delivered clientelistically via political mediators rather than programmatic solutions; and prefer clientelistic over programmatic local candidates. Our findings elucidate why the preferences of poor informal workers often diverge from those assumed by standard models of social insurance and have important implications for the political economy of social policy in a world where billions work outside work-based tax-transfer systems. In this paper we present an effort to integrate the informal sector into a neo-Kaleckian growth and distribution model. While informality is a relevant issue to all developing countries, our work is motivated mainly by the Brazilian case, where recent growth of informal employment occurs amid stagnation of the formal sector. We seek to shed light on the relationship between the expansion of both sectors and their influences on economic performance, using as theoretical background the reproduction scheme from Kalecki, now considering the informal sector into the model. Also, we seek to examine the extent to which the expansion of the informal activities can be helpful or harmful for the formal economy in the long run. Our model is consistent with observed empirical facts and reinforces some theoretical and empirical results, for instance, the resilience of the informal activity, its growth at times of economic expansion as well as in times of recession, and its ultimate dependence on the formal economy. Purpose: The policy approach in Pakistan with regard to combating the informal economy has remained quite myopic and skewed in its reliance on measures informed by the rational economic-actor theory as opposed to the social-actor approach. Thus, this study attempts to evaluate and synthesise the two alternative policy approaches and formulate a more theoretically integrative understanding of the subject. Design/methodology/approach: The authors gather data from 600 micro-entrepreneurs operating in the retail and wholesale sector of Lahore, Pakistan, which is then analysed using an ordered logit regression technique. Findings: In contrast to more developed countries, the finding here is that higher perceived penalties have a highly significant and positive impact on the level of formality of Pakistani micro-entrepreneurs. The perceived risk of detection, meanwhile, has only a moderately significant impact on the micro-entrepreneurs level of formality. Likewise, the level of vertical and horizontal trust has a positive but moderately significant impact on the level of formality. Nonetheless, both the vertical and horizontal trust exhibit a very significant moderating effect on the relationship between the use of penalties and the level of formality, that is, the higher the level of trust that the micro-entrepreneurs have in the state and other businesses, the lower is the effectiveness of punitive measures. Practical implications: Deterrence is an effective way to enhance the level of formality in the case of the Pakistani context. Nonetheless, the authors imply that without building trust, this overreliance on punitive and detective measures can actually be counter-productive. A combined and congruent (not sequential) use of voluntary compliance measures is thus warranted. COVID-19 pandemic has undermined the functionality of formal and informal economies globally, with developing countries suffering the social, political and economic effects of the pandemic. Economic downturns in the global south, including Nigeria, have given rise to declining state control in the face of human insecurity. This study, hinging on the neoliberal political economy thesis, examines the economic crisis and declining state control the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown engendered in managing the security situation in Nigeria. The study, utilizing the dominant qualitative methods, comprising interviews, focus group discussions, and documented evidence, highlighted that the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown disproportionately affected the people, mainly poor people, households and communities in different parts of the country. The failure of the government to engage in an effective social protection policy generated discontent and led to criminal activities undermining security in Nigeria. The study concludes that the insecurity and economic crisis the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown engendered have weakened the state's authority in Nigeria. The study suggests that engaging effective social protection policy presents an opportunity for mitigating security challenges to bring about socioeconomic stability in Nigeria. BackgroundYoung people are increasingly seeking employment in the informal sector due to increasing global unemployment. However, the precarious nature of work in the informal sectors, coupled with the high risk of occupational hazards, calls for a greater need for effective healthcare for informal sector workers, particularly young people. In addressing the health vulnerabilities of informal workers, systematic data on the determinants of health is a persistent challenge. Therefore, the objective of this systematic review was to identify and summarise the existing factors that affect access to healthcare among young people from the informal sector.MethodsWe searched six data databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest, Crossref, and Google Scholar), which was followed by hand searching. Then we screened the identified literature using review-specific inclusion/exclusion criteria, extracted data from the included studies and assessed study quality. Then we presented the results in narrative form, though meta-analysis was not possible due to heterogeneity in the study design.ResultsAfter the screening, we retrieved 14 studies. The majority were cross-sectional surveys and were conducted in Asia (n = 9); four were conducted in Africa, and one in South America. Samples ranged in size from 120 to 2,726. The synthesised results demonstrate that problems of affordability, availability, accessibility, and acceptability of healthcare were barriers to young informal workers seeking healthcare. We found social networks and health insurance as facilitators of access for this group of people.ConclusionTo date, this is the most comprehensive review of the evidence on access to healthcare for young people in the informal sector. Our study finding highlights the key gaps in knowledge where future research could further illuminate the mechanisms through which social networks and the determinants of access to healthcare could influence the health and well-being of young people and thus inform policy development.

This paper explored the contribution of TVET skill development in the transformation of the informal sector in the Kampala urban area of Uganda using qualitative research with a systematic literature review. The included articles in this study were based on four criteria: (i) focus on informal sector in developing countries like Uganda, (ii) linked informal sector with TVET (skill training), (iii) published in English language, (iv) downloadable article. The Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework was used to retrieve 40 articles at step one. In step two, reading and screening articles by titles and abstracts, 26 articles were excluded (16 for duplication, and 10 articles had no clear connection with IS and TVET). In the final step, 14 articles were retained for in-depth reading guided by research questions with content analysis used in data analysis. It was found that the informal sector is not fast-growing and large, but it contributes over 50% of Uganda's GDP and 20% comes from Kampala, which is the second-largest employer after agriculture providing over 70% of non-farm employment opportunities to vulnerable urban dwellers. Informal firms prevail and preoccupy a dominant share of the economic activity in many developing countries. Yet, few attempts have been made to systematically integrate dominant theories of the firm with the empirical importance of informal enterprises. The purpose of this paper is to review established theories of the informal economy and the firm, and to explore potential for cross-fertilization to better understand the nature of the firm in the informal economy. We seek to convey two basic points: First, as informal economy firms vary in form, structure, and strategies, a systematic inquiry of their heterogeneous and idiosyncratic nature is warranted. Second, significant opportunities for future development research reside at the interface between existing theoretical explanations of the informal economy (dualistic, structuralist legal, and voluntarist theories) and dominant theories of the firm (contractual and competence theories). We discuss in detail three main themes for future development research seeking to understand informal economy firms: (i) Contract mechanisms and enforcement; (ii) Learning strategies; and (iii) Resource and capability development. This article investigates the impacts of global value chain (GVC) participation on the shadow economy size (SES). GVC participation is classified by the source of the value-added in exports, looking both backward and forward from the perspective of a reference country. First, by using a global sample of 33 developed and 23 developing countries during the 2005–2015 period, the empirical results demonstrate that GVC participation has a negative impact on SES. Second, our findings confirm the presence of a non-linear bell-shaped association between backward GVC and SES while forward GVC has a significant increasingly negative influence on the SES. Third, the positive effects of backward GVC on SES are greater for developing countries, while the forward GVC plays a more critical role in reducing SES in developed countries. Finally, in the short term, both backward and forward GVC participation reduce SES, but the effects follow a U-shaped curve. In the long-term, there is evidence on the bell-shaped non-linear relationship between backward GVC and SES in developing countries, and between forward GVC and SES in developed countries. Backward GVC is an effective tool to control the SES of developing countries, while forward GVC is more important for developed countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
