This paper calls for greater scrutiny of data journalism as a practice in the semi-authoritarian context of Zimbabwe. Based on in-depth interviews with practising journalists in Zimbabwe, this paper answers two main questions: In what ways is data journalism practised in the Zimbabwean context? To what extent are newsrooms in Zimbabwe "tooled" and capacitated for data journalism practices? We note that data journalism is widely understood by individual journalists in this country but paradoxically less practised due to many challenges. By answering these two questions, we sustain an argument that data journalism appropriation in semi-authoritarian contexts can be instrumental in promoting monitorial democracy and reversing media decadence. In such a political context, which suffers from a democratic deficit, data journalism can cushion journalists from state-sanctioned harassment by "presenting facts to authorities" and reinvigorating "persecutory" practices like investigative journalism. Data journalism (DJ) stands out as a distinguished contemporary form of news storytelling in which data are simplified and communicated via visuals. It can disseminate knowledge on complex phenomena and contribute to the advancement of journalism. Understanding the motives of readers' DJ consumption is vital to the understanding of three focal elements in the journalism equation: society, journalists, and news-media institutions. This paper fills a gap in the knowledge about studies in DJ – audience interrelationship, contributing to the understanding of the twinning relationship between domesticating everchanging communication technologies and DJ consumption. The theoretical framework draws on news consumption and domestication theory in examining the way media and communication students in Palestinian universities (hereinafter MC students) interact with DJ-based stories communicated via social media platforms. Surveying MC students (N = 99) at four prominent Palestinian universities in the West Bank, the paper explores the motivations behind MC students' DJ consumption, and how recent media technologies might induce its levels of consumption. Targeting Facebook, results show that MC students' engagement with DJ stories is primarily induced by their interest in the topics presented, with social and human stories as primary topics. As the media landscape continuously evolves in response to the increasing dominance of data, it is important to understand how future journalists perceive and respond to the emerging discipline of data journalism. This paper explores the impact of an introductory session on data journalism conducted with second-year journalism students at Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, Greece. The study aims, through a focus group survey, to assess the students' initial understanding and beliefs about data journalism and explores how an educational activity, structured as a one-time workshop utilizing a resource from the Al Jazeera Media Institute and data journalism project examples from the BBC, can elucidate the notion of data journalism and stimulate interest in the field. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on the integration of data journalism into journalism curricula and the training of the next generation of journalists. Therefore, the findings could provide valuable insights for educators in understanding journalism students' perception of data journalism in order to develop effective curricula and teaching methods for data journalism. This paper makes an important contribution to comparative research by examining data journalism in Spain and Austria. This paper examines the practice of data journalism from a triple perspective: (a) the common features of day-to-day work, (b) the organizational structure and the role of the teams in newsrooms, and (c) the obstacles to and the future of data-driven reporting. Results from content analysis of data-driven news stories in El país and Der standard (N = 136) show differences and similarities in the covered topics, sources, narrative style, visualizations, interactive functions, and levels of transparency. Interestingly, only 36.8% of the analyzed news stories correspond to the normative expectations of transparency by incorporating both sources and methodological details. While the Spanish newspaper shows significantly higher levels of transparency compared with the Austrian newspaper, both newspapers perform very similarly when it comes to providing access to raw data, which was the case in only every fifth news story analyzed. Findings from focused interviews with the heads of data journalism teams deliver interesting insights into specific challenges that each news outlet is facing when creating day-to-day data-driven news stories. This research confirms the relevance that data journalism has achieved in countries such as Spain and demonstrates the effort of journalists in countries without access to information and transparency laws to create data-driven stories. News organisations have longstanding practices for archiving and preserving their content. The emerging practice of data journalism has led to the creation of complex new outputs, including dynamic data visualisations that rely on distributed digital infrastructures. Traditional news archiving does not yet have systems in place for preserving these outputs, which means that we risk losing this crucial part of reporting and news history. Following a systematic approach to studying the literature in this area, this paper provides a set of recommendations to address lacunae in the literature. This paper contributes to the field by (1) providing a systematic study of the literature in the fields, (2) providing a set of recommendations for the adoption of long-term preservation of dynamic data visualisations as part of the news publication workflow, and (3) identifying concrete actions that data journalists can take immediately to ensure that these visualisations are not lost. Data journalism in Indonesia has been evolving rapidly, with practices and challenges that are unique to the region. This article aims to provide an overview of the current state of data journalism in Indonesia, its potential for growth, and the barriers that need to be overcome. This article uses literature review method focusing on 11 publications relating to data journalism practice in Indonesia ranging from year 2018 to 2024. It shows that (1) the availability of open access data from Indonesian government that has some data credibility issues such as less integrated data, lack of raw data and digital divide of internet availability and coverage in some Indonesian region; (2) journalists’ competence of data skills from gathering to displaying (3) decision of building data journalism team is from top authority (4) good narrative enhances news values and audience engagement, (5) data journalism interconnect with news ecosystem in terms of news production and dissemination collaboration. This study underscores the importance of enhancing the competency of Indonesian journalists, particularly in the realm of data journalism. To address this need, developing targeted training programs that improve data literacy and bolster newsroom data journalism teams is crucial. Additionally, future research should explore the impact of data journalism on audience engagement within the Indonesian news media ecosystem, providing insights into how different media platforms can better connect with their audiences. In big data era, data has become an important part of human lives and work. At the same time, data plays an important role in information acquisition and dissemination. At present, the influence of data journalism is gradually increasing. However, unlike other countries, China data journalism started late. To study the problems of data journalism and the trend of future development, we use the method of combining data and news to explore the status quo and dig out the existing problems. This article first summarizes the research status, research methods, and theoretical basis of data journalism's propagation path. Next, it uses Lasswell's 5W model: a new model to analyze data news from five aspects, namely, disseminator, disseminating channel, dissemination content, audience, and dissemination effect. Finally, based on content analysis, searching, and data mining, an indicator system is constructed for the current new media's news dissemination effect evaluation, and the Delphi method is used to assign weights to various indicators and make decisions based on them. By analyzing the results, this paper identify the problems in the process of combining data journalism and new media platforms, and provide help for the future communication strategy of data journalism. Extant research on data journalism in Africa has focused on newsroom factors and the predilections of individual journalists as determinants of the uptake of data journalism on the continent. This article diverts from this literature by examining the slow uptake of data journalism in sub- Saharan Africa through the prisms of non-newsroom factors. Drawing on in-depth interviews with prominent investigative journalists sampled from several African countries, we argue that to understand the slow uptake of data journalism on the continent; there is a need to critique the role of data politics, which encompasses state, market and existing media ecosystems across the continent. Therefore, it is necessary to move beyond newsroom-centric factors that have dominated the contemporary understanding of data journalism practices. A broader, non-newsroom conceptualisation beyond individual journalistic predilections and newsroom resources provides productive clarity on data journalism's slow uptake on the continent. The newspaper emerged as a distinct cultural form in early 17th-century Europe. It is bound up with the early modern period of history. Historical newspapers are of utmost importance to nations and its people, and researchers from different disciplines rely on these papers to improve our understanding of the past. In pursuit of satisfying this need, Istanbul University Head Office of Library and Documentation provides access to a big database of scanned historical newspapers. To take it another step further and make the documents more accessible, we need to run optical character recognition (OCR) and named entity recognition (NER) tasks on the whole database and index the results to allow for full-text search mechanism. We design and implement a system encompassing the whole pipeline starting from scrapping the dataset from the original website to providing a graphical user interface to run search queries, and it manages to do that successfully. The COVID-19 health crisis has been heavily reported on an international scale for several years. This has pushed news journalism in a datafied direction: reporters have learnt how to analyse and visualise the statistical effects of COVID-19 on various sectors of society. As a result, in 2021, the international Sigma Awards competition for data journalism highlighted coverage of the pandemic. Using content analysis with qualitative elements, this paper analyses the shortlisted works covering COVID-19 from the competition (n=73). It focuses on the data references made by the teams - sources, type of both reference and data used - showing statistics from official institutions to be the most used type of data. It also lists the main problems journalists had to face while working on their projects. Data journalism in Western-centric research has been lauded for its investigative qualities, capable of bringing to light previously concealed information and enabling the press to play its watchdog function. That said, journalism outside the liberal West may operate within vastly different contexts, shaped by different historical experiences, political cultures, and philosophical traditions, thereby creating a different brand of data journalism. This paper examines data journalism practice in Asia specifically, a region known to be home to collaborative press systems that adhere to a set of "Asian values" pertaining to collectivism, social harmony, norm conformity and deference to authority. By examining 210 data stories produced by news outlets in six Asian countries, this study finds that Asian values are displayed in a vast majority of data stories produced in the region, most of which are news stories pertaining to the home country of these news outlets. Continued reliance on government sources for information and a lack of stories that reveal previously hidden information or scrutinize a powerful entity also suggest no strong push to leverage on the investigative qualities of data journalism to produce more "watchdog" journalism; focus is instead placed on the "civic" role of informing the public. With the development of big data technology, not only driving the development of the social economy but also the news media industry is developing in the direction of integration and innovation, and promoting the dissemination of news through data value factors is the focus of current research. This paper takes data news as the research object, takes the framework theory as the entry point, and mainly studies the data news production dilemma and its optimization path. Firstly, the data news information is classified by entity extraction, and the weights between the entity information are calculated to establish the association. Secondly, the IE-Page Rank algorithm is proposed to get the IER value of each information entity by iterative calculation, which is used to identify its importance and quantitatively get the importance ranking of all information entities. Finally, the basic framework of data news visualization is constructed, and the applicable visualization optimization dissemination path is given in the case. The research results show that compared with the traditional media news dissemination model, the improved data visualization dissemination model increases efficiency by 32.3%, timeliness by 18.9%, user satisfaction by 21.1%, and effectively increases the reading volume and dissemination paths by 17.2% of users. The improved data news visualization dissemination model proposed in this paper improves the professionalization of data analysis, enhances the interactivity and visualization of data news works, and provides guidance for disseminating data news.

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a global health crisis that stimulated journalists to frame their stories around predictive models and forecasts aiming to predict the future trend of the pandemic. This article examines the audience response to predictive journalism by qualitatively analyzing readers' comments to articles covering COVID that were published in a small sample of mainstream media. Based on a thematic analysis of readers' comments, this research contributes a typology of audience response types to the models incorporated in such predictive journalism. We elaborate on each of three primary themes—reflecting affective, action-oriented, and evaluative responses—and discuss the implications of our findings and the importance of expanding research to answer questions related to the role of predictive journalism in shaping affective response, encouraging action-oriented responses and collective planning around responsibility for taking future actions, and considering the ways in which supportive and critical comments triggered by the models may be harnessed to improve communication. In this paper, we study the Greek wiretappings scandal, which was revealed in 2022 and attracted significant attention from the press and citizens. Specifically, we propose a methodology for collecting data and analyzing patterns of online public discussions on Twitter. We apply our methodology to the Greek wiretappings use case and present findings related to the evolution of the discussion over time, its polarization, and the role of the Media. The methodology can be of wider use and replicated to other topics. Finally, we publicly provide an open dataset and online resources with the results.

Drawing from the sociology of news production theory, this study examines the uptake of data-driven practices in business news reporting. It examines the extent to which journalists have adopted data journalism in business news and how this has altered their news reporting practices. It is based on a textual analysis of business news stories from two selected prominent business newspapers – Business Day and The Financial Mail and qualitative interviews with business news reporters. The study finds that there is a (gradually) increasing uptake of data-driven business news reporting practices, tempered by journalists' concerns regarding their own individual professional capabilities. Furthermore, the practice has increasingly created a new narrative of corporate accountability in the press and inculcated collaboration in newsrooms. It argues that data-driven business news practices have upended the 'rhythimised' and 'routinised' news production processes by, among other aspects, empowering non-elite news sources, fostering newsroom collaborations and agentive the newsrooms. Mobile devices are increasingly used in every part of daily life. Individuals are more likely to read the news on mobile devices than on paper or on desktop devices. Maps, too, are common both in mobile apps and browsers, necessitating design considerations specific to these devices (Abraham 2019). However, most research on mobile map design has focused on reference maps, particularly those used for navigation (Lee et al. 2022). Mobile thematic maps, despite their wide use in data journalism, are understudied in academic cartography, and are typically designed using principles from web or print cartography. While responsive design that considers both web and mobile is important, I argue for the need to make mobile-first design a priority in research (see Bartling et al. 2022 for a related call to action on mobile design). This article combines two neglected elements within the history of online news: public service news sites and weather reporting, and it does so by utilising web archives, which – surprisingly – do not figure very prominently in journalism history. The two elements have – in isolation and in combination – at least in Denmark, become increasingly important as the online news sections of the two public service institutions Denmark's Radio (DR) and TV2 consistently are among the most visited news sites and since reporting on the weather has gained in prominence and more recently, at least on DR TV, has become increasingly educational in its linking to issues of climate change. This article focusses on online news and conducts a historical analysis of the weather reporting on DR.dk from 2005 to 2022. The analysis seeks to balance the coding of journalistic texts with considerations of the online form of journalism, which here broadly means reading the webpage as a text. This study investigates the function of data journalism in a UK newsroom using Bourdieu's field theory. The collection of study data was conducted through in-depth interviews, utilising a qualitative research methodology. The data obtained revealed that data journalism, a sub-field of journalism, continues to develop in an interdisciplinary structure and creates a new type of habitus (data habitus) within the field of journalism. This study also shows that the data journalism team in the newspaper has moved from being niche to being established as one of the most active and effective main sections of the newsroom, and that data-driven journalism has the potential to influence other teams. Lastly, this study suggested that the newsroom is undergoing a process of datafication by indicating the newspaper's intention to develop data skills beyond the data journalism team. This article draws on a qualitative interview-based study and the framework of the 'critical incident' to explore whether, how and for whom the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic saw an increased uptake of data-driven automation in Australian newsrooms and with what implications for the field. Our findings show that, while news workers combined and adapted existing technologies to meet increased demands for rolling, data-driven coverage of the pandemic, structural and institutional factors prevented the uptake and embedding of forms of data journalism and editorial automation that may have assisted with providing more timely and effective public health information. The findings highlight the importance of COVID-19 as both an acute event and an ongoing situation that has revealed and prompted reflection on the practical and political challenges of data flows between government agencies and news organisations. Despite the growing momentum of data analysis in Africa, scholarly attention has largely overlooked the promotion of data-driven content for enhanced audience engagement. Grounded in the sociology of news paradigm, this study examines engagement practices of online news platforms in Nigeria and explores the potential influence of audience engagement metrics on editorial decision-making. The in-depth interview research method was adopted for the study. Heads of data journalism units in four purposively selected online news media platforms in Nigeria with established data journalism practices were sampled as respondents for the study. The study identifies six innovative strategies being adopted by online news media in Nigeria to enhance audience engagement. Findings also confirm the centrality of audience engagement metrics to news-making decisions, but with the understanding to also consider the potential societal impact of stories in determining issues to produce data-driven content on. This study investigates the research questions: "How do political connections within Greece's governing party evolve, and what underlying patterns and dynamics are revealed through a network analysis of interactions on  X  (formerly Twitter)?" To address these questions, data were collected from X , focusing on following, retweeting, and mentioning activities among the politicians within the governing party. The interactions were meticulously analysed using tools derived from Network Theory in mathematics, including in and out-strength centrality, hubs and authorities centralities, and in and out-vertex entropy. In line with the emerging field of data journalism, this approach enhances the rigour and depth of analysis, facilitating a more nuanced understanding of complex political landscapes. The findings reveal complex and dynamic structures that may reflect internal relationships, communication strategies, and the influence of recurring events on these connections within the party. This study thus provides novel insights into understanding political communication via social networks and demonstrates the applicative potential of Network Theory and data journalism techniques in social sciences. Like any other profession, the media and communication domains are also majorly robust with the advent of computers and information communication technologies. In the recent past, the concept of data journalism struck the chords of major news media houses across the globe. Data journalism is an evolving form of storytelling, where journalist works with data, data analytics software, and visualize data to narrate their news stories. In India, over the years, many academic institutions started offering certificate, diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programmes in journalism and communication-related fields. Currently, academic curricula and journalism education are strengthened with conventional journalism theories and practices. Due to the arrival of data journalism, modern tools, and techniques, journalism pedagogy faces a relatively large knowledge gap. This research article is an outcome of exploratory research that examined 155 academic institutions by scrutinizing the communication curriculum offered across India and suggests the need-based syllabi in consultation with academic and industrial experts, which entails data journalism as an empowering element for the current and next-generation journalists. In the context of digitization, traditional journalism is facing transformation and innovation. Among them, the interactivity of visual graphics in data journalism is crucial for attracting and retaining online users, but few studies have examined public perceptions and attitudes toward it. In this study, we proposed a model to validate the relationship between users' perceived interactivity and their attitudes toward data journalism, and we included user affective and cognitive factors (enjoyment and engagement) related to this as possible mediating variables in the model for validation. We conducted experiments (n = 75) using data journalism containing map visualizations with three levels of interactivity (low, medium, and high) in China. Furthermore, an exploratory evaluation of the experimental group provided further insights into the differences in interactions between groups, and the emerging five key concepts of data journalism design. Overall, all our hypotheses are supported, with enjoyment and engagement mediating the relationship between perceived interactivity and users' attitudes toward the news. In addition, the experimental group with higher interaction potential also reported more positive attitudes toward journalism. As more newsrooms practice data journalism in this age of big data through the use of analytical and visualization tools, much research on exemplary award-winning data stories continue to be Western-centric and associated with data journalism's democratic role of scrutinizing government and corporations as watchdog. This study examines the news organization in the non-West that has scored the most wins in international data journalism awards, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, to discover characteristics of the data journalism it practices, as its media operates within an environment with increasing government monitoring of the press, similar to countries in the Asian region subjected to various forms of authoritarian politics. Through a content analysis of 130 data stories produced from 2016 to 2020, this study investigates the topics that SCMP's data team chooses to cover, how they are covered and the extent to which data journalism is able to work in the public's interest amid Hong Kong's increasingly complex political and social context. Findings show that even when stories are data-driven and evidence-based, with the use of diverse data sources and visualizations, topics related to China or Chinese politics tend to be approached with caution and the nature of stories more explanatory than investigative and less interactive. The roles of watchdog and interventionist are felt weakly in SCMP's data stories, and the role of loyal-facilitator felt more strongly for stories on China than those on Hong Kong and the world, suggesting that data journalism may face challenges performing its democratic functions. Data journalism is a consolidated specialization in the newsrooms of many of the world's media outlets. Despite this, little research has been conducted on the ethical principles followed in this field of journalism. Data journalism uses different types of software to find its stories by statistically analyzing large datasets. Our research examines the winning projects of the Data Journalism Awards, Sigma Awards, and Online Journalism Awards, the last in the data journalism category, between 2012 and 2020. Using qualitative content analysis, we analyzed these projects from a three-fold ethical perspective: verification and data analysis, transparency, and privacy. Our main findings show that the winning projects complied with verification and data analysis, which is a standard practice to cross-check data from various sources and contextualize them adequately. In contrast, transparency and privacy principles were followed to a lesser extent. In light of these results, we propose that future research should focus on the perceptions of data journalists and users regarding the ethical standards that these projects meet. The purpose of this study is to explore the role of data visualization in the media coverage of the 2016 presidential election in the United States focusing on data-visualization projects from the New York Times and the Washington Post. This research aims to examine how media coverage of the election has been framed with infographics through mixed methods analysis. Another part of this article presents an investigation of data journalists' working routines and so-called boundary-work (Boyles, J. L., and E. Meyer. 2016. "Letting the Data Speak." Digital Journalism 4 (7): 944–954. doi:10.1080/21670811.2016.1166063) by conducting interviews with data reporters. The mixed methods textual and visual analysis shows that framing the election as a game is still relevant for the election data reporting. Analysis of graphics before the election has demonstrated the prevalent game frame trend in data visualization pieces. However, this pattern has changed after the election with increased priority for the issue frame and policy coverage. Results have demonstrated that journalists tend to reinforce the game frame in the infographics. That phenomenon leads to a potential increase in political polarization and political skepticism. Analysis of the interviews with data journalists from two newsrooms shows that professional work routines affect their reporting and reinforce the detrimental influence of framing on the election coverage. In Brazil, inequalities are visually represented in its favelas. These neighborhoods are usually comprised of low-income informal settlements neglected by governments and often forgotten by mainstream media. The pervasive nature of information and communications technology (ICT) has brought new ways to produce news content in the media industry, giving voice to these communities. Thus, small, alternative, community, or non-mainstream media became a vital terrain of opposition activism. Drawing on user participation, collaboration, and data journalism theories, this article analyzes three alternative media organizations (Agência Mural, data_labe, and Favela em Pauta), which proposed producing data-driven content by, for, and about favelas through a mixed-method research design. Results show that four contributing factors tend to help these organizations to produce data stories despite these challenges: citizen participation, activism, collaboration, and humanizing data. Data is collected from all aspects of our lives. Yet, data alone is useless unless converted into information and, ultimately, knowledge. Since data analysts, in most cases, are not the ones in charge of making decisions based on their findings, communicating the results to stakeholders is crucial to passing on information of data‐driven insights. That is where the discipline of data storytelling comes into play. Often, data storytelling is considered an effective data visualization. Creating data stories is a structured approach to communicating data insights as an interplay of the three elements data, visuals, and narrative. Sharing data‐driven insights to decision‐makers requires data storytellers skilled in the "art of storytelling." In this paper, the authors discuss the use of Storytelling in business to communicate data to internal stakeholders. The findings are derived from (1) an extensive literature review and (2) 13 expert interviews with people incorporating data storytelling into their daily work within their jobs in international companies. These interviews revealed the importance of providing a flexible tool to support knowledge sharing for people communicating complex data to internal stakeholders. Combining literature with qualitative research enabled the authors to create the "data storytelling cheat sheet", a guide for practical data storytelling.
