During and after the COVID-19 pandemic, teleophthalmology provided access to eye care for rural populations. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of and satisfaction with an integrated real-time videoconferencing module. This project incorporated ophthalmic instruments and telecommunication devices and provided on-site consultations via videoconferencing. Both patients and healthcare providers completed satisfaction questionnaires. From May 2020 to May 2021, this project provided eye care services to 395 patients (aged 6–90 years). The most frequent eye condition was chronic conjunctivitis (n = 197), followed by senile cataract (n = 163), dry eye (n = 103), and refractive error (n = 95). Among them, 40 (10.1%) patients were referred to secondary or tertiary hospitals for further evaluation or treatment. In total, 181 recruited respondents provided good satisfaction scores in all dimensions, including quality of medical care (4.50 of 5.00), financial aspects of care (4.48), supportive attitude toward the project (4.47), quality of service (4.40), and quality of telecommunication (4.40). Women had a substantially more supportive attitude toward the project, and 25 healthcare providers provided low ratings in areas representing the quality of telecommunication (4.04) and user-friendliness of the instrument (4.00). This teleophthalmology system provided efficient and satisfactory eye care to participants in remote communities. This article discusses the impact of COVID-19 on diabetic retinopathy (DR) in Fiji. The country has a high rate of diabetes, and DR is a sight-threatening condition that can lead to irreversible blindness if not treated promptly. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted diabetic eye care services, leading to a backlog of DR cases needing treatment. A retrospective review of DR screening data from 2018 to 2022 showed higher rates of DR among newly screened diabetes patients in Fiji compared to the global rate. The severity of DR also increased during the pandemic. The study highlights the need for improved and expanded diabetic eye care services in Fiji, including the use of innovative technologies for screening. [Extracted from the article]

Background: Our previous study revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic posed mental health challenges to eye care professionals and students. The intent of this study was to identify the longitudinal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health among ophthalmic personnel and students. Additionally, the potential risk factors for mental health problems were investigated. Methods: A two-phase survey among eye care professionals and students in the USA and Canada was conducted. Phase 1 was administrated from June 23 to July 8, 2020, and has been published; Phase 2 was conducted from January 21 to February 2, 2021. A total of 824 eye care professionals and students participated in Phase 2, with a response rate of 44.1%. Symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress were measured and calculated. Results: Compared with Phase 1, stress scores in Phase 2 were significantly reduced (P<0.001) although they were still higher than the pre-COVID level (P <.001). Scores for depression (P = 0.20) and anxiety (P = 0.40) showed no change, comparing Phase 2 to Phase 1. Reduction of stress scores significantly differed among occupations (P = 0.005); students had less reduction of stress than other eye care professionals (all P<0.05). Vaccination status was significantly associated with a reduction in stress scores (P = 0.04). Conclusions: With the continuing COVID pandemic, although stress level was reduced at 7-month follow-up, the mental health of eye care professionals was still impacted. In this population, COVID-19 vaccination was associated with fewer stress symptoms. These results indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic continues impacting mental health among eye care professionals, especially students. Purpose: To evaluate factors associated with the occurrence of ROCM in COVID-19 patients and to compare its related parameters and outcomes between active and recovered COVID-19 groups. Methods: A total of 35 patients of ROCM associated with COVID-19 (active and post-COVID-19) were included. This is an ambispective study with retrospective medical records review for COVID-19 analysis and prospective assessments of ROCM-associated COVID-19 during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The demographic data, clinical parameters, and outcome were recorded on MS excel sheet, and various parameters were compared between active and recovered COVID-19 groups. Results: ROCM in recovered COVID-19 group was higher (57.1%) as compared to active COVID-19 (42.9%) (P = 1.00). High occurrence of ROCM was seen in those who had a history of hospitalization due to severity of COVID-19 (n 33, 94.28%), oxygen support (77.14), and received systemic steroids (82.9%). The most common comorbidity was diabetes mellitus (82.9%), and new-onset hyperglycemia was noticed in 17.1% of patients. Exenteration (28.6%) was performed in severe cases who had stage IV ROCM, bilateral, and CNS involvement (RR = 7.2, 95% CI: 2.91 to 18.00). The risk of globe exenteration was 1.35 (0.7-2.29) times higher in recovered COVID-19 group, and mortality was 1.76 (0.72-3.36) times higher in active COVID-19 group. Conclusion: Monitored use of systemic steroids and the prompt management of hyperglycemia in COVID-19 patients are important factors for favorable outcomes with reference to globe salvage and life-saving in ROCM associated with COVID-19. Explore door-to-door eye screening in India as a model to reach school age children in need of eye care, especially during school closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Children between 5 and 18 years were screened in an urban-slum of Delhi from September 2020 to March 2021. Screening included capturing ocular complaints, visual acuity and conducting a torchlight examination. Children with any eye-related complaints, gross abnormality or a LogMAR acuity of more than 0.2 in either eye were referred to the nearby vision centre. Data were disaggregated by gender and age group. Reporting after referral and proportion of true positives referrals were used to assess the model. 32,857 children were screened. 55% were boys. Only 917 children (2.8%) had previous eye examinations. 1814 (5.5%) children were referred. Overall compliance rate amongst those referred was 59% (1070 of 1814) and compliance was significantly higher (72%) amongst those referred with poor vision as compared to those with only ocular morbidities (38%). Overall compliance was significantly higher amongst older age group (64% vs 50%) and amongst girls than boys (61% vs 56%). 3.9% children were detected with refractive error (RE) and 2.5% with uncorrected RE which was significantly higher in girls and in older age group. Of 1070 children reporting after referral, 85% had confirmed diagnosis for RE or other ocular pathology. Door-to-door screening had good referral compliance and positive predictive value. Purpose: To study the impact of the novel coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on incidence, seasonal variation, clinical presentation, and disease outcome of epidemic retinitis (ER) and to compare clinical outcomes with positive and negative COVID-19 serology. Methods: This is a retrospective, observational study conducted at a tertiary eye care hospital from August 2020 to June 2022. A graph of ER cases against the month of presentation was compared with the graph of the COVID-19 pandemic in the same region. Cases presented before COVID-19 vaccination, with positive COVID-19 serology (Group 1) were compared with cases with negative serology (Group 2). Results: One hundred and thirty-two cases of ER were seen. The least number of cases were seen during and immediately after the peak of the pandemic (May 2021-August 2021). COVID-19 serology was positive in 13 (22 eyes)/60 (21.6%) unvaccinated cases. Along with COVID-19, positive serology for other ER etiologies was seen in 5/13 cases (38.4%). All patients received oral doxycycline with/without steroids. Groups 1 and 2 included 22 and 21 eyes of 13 cases each. Macular edema resolved in 43.6 and 32 days in groups 1 and 2, respectively. Retinitis resolved at 1 month in both groups. Corrected distant visual acuity was 20/50 and 20/70 at the presentation, which improved to 20/20 and 20/25 in groups 1 and 2, respectively. Mean and median follow-up was 6 months and 4.5 months, respectively, in both groups. No complications or recurrences were seen. We present frequency of ocular symptoms in COVID-19 patients in Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad. A total of 333 admitted patients with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection were included. Patients were enquired and examined for any ocular symptoms that developed along with COVID-19. The results were stratified by sex, age, comorbidities, High Resolution CT (HRCT) and condition of conjunctiva. Data was analyzed using SPSS 28.0.1.1. Chi square test was performed to measure the p value of the reported eye symptoms. Out of the 333, 81 subjects fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Forty-six patients (56%) were females and 52 patients out of 81 (64.2%) reported redness of conjunctiva. A positive relationship between the COVID-19 and the frequency of eye symptoms was observed with p value of 0.001. BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) was notified by China on December 31, 2019, of a pneumonia outbreak severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus-19 virus infection in Wuhan. This outbreak was declared by the WHO from the Public Health Emergency of International Concern to formal declaration as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. Because the public health measures like lockdown, the eye care delivery system was markedly impacted. The aim of this study was to find out if any pattern change of red eye cases among patients who attended eye accident and emergency (A and E) in a tertiary care hospital during COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 compared to 2019 and 2018. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cohort retrospective study which included all patients who presented to eye A and E clinic with red eye from March 1 to July 31 in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Data were analyzed using statistical tools in the SPSS software. Furthermore, the clinical records of 578 inpatients with proven COVID-19 were reviewed for any red eye problem. RESULTS: Out of 7895 eye patients attended eye A and E clinic during March-July of 2018, 2019, and 2020, 1573 (19.9%) patients had red eye. Males were slightly dominant with 59%, and unilateral cases were the majority among them. The most common causes of red eye in 2018 and 2019 were injury, conjunctivitis, and keratitis; whereas in 2020, a clear dominance of injury and keratitis cases was found. Only 10 (2.03%) patients out of the 493 outpatients with red eye during the 5-month period in 2020 reported a prior contact to a COVID-19 positive case; of whom nine patients had conjunctivitis, and one had a right eye open globe injury. Of the 578 inpatients with proven COVID-19, only 1 (0.17%) patient had red eye with the diagnosis of conjunctivitis. CONCLUSION: There was relatively increased number of adults reporting with red eye in 2020. Eye injuries were the most common among all years, followed by conjunctivitis and keratitis. Background: The article aims to study the demographics and clinical characteristics of ocular trauma patients presenting to the Eye Casualty Clinic between COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 era in Ampang Hospital, Malaysia. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, data of patients presented with ocular trauma injury to the Ampang Hospital during the COVID-19 era from 18 March 2020 to 17 September 2020 were retrieved and compared with the similar period of the previous non-COVID-19 era year. Results: Among the total number of 453 patients, 76.82% (n = 348) were predominantly males. The commonest age group was between 21 years old--40 years old (49.45%, n = 224), and the commonest location of ocular trauma injury occurred at the workplace (38.19%, n = 173); welding was the commonest work-related injury (13.83% in 2019; 12.50% in 2020). Injury-to-treatment time was significantly longer during the COVID-19 era, where patients who sought treatment within a day of injury were 27.27% (n = 69) in 2019 and 18.50% (n = 37) in 2020 (P = 0.030). During the COVID-19 pandemic, patients with vision worse than 6/60 on presentation were higher at 8% compared with 3.56% before the COVID-19 pandemic (OR = 2.35; 95% CI: 1.01, 5.48; P = 0.047). Similarly, patients with a vision worse than 6/60 post-treatment during the COVID-19 period were significantly higher at 7.00% compared with 1.58% before the COVID-19 pandemic (OR = 4.72; 95% CI: 1.53, 14.62; P = 0.007). Conclusion: The majority of ocular trauma cases in this study population were male adults between 21 years old and 40 years old, and welding was the commonest work-related injury. Purpose: To investigate the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak on compliance to amblyopia therapy from the perspective of parents of amblyopic children. Methods: The participants for the qualitative study were enrolled from the medical records of a tertiary eye care center during the COVID-19 pandemic. The trained researcher conducted telephonic interviews consisting of validated 15 open-ended questions for 15 min. The questions were related to patients' compliance toward amblyopia treatment and the date of follow-up with their practitioners. The data collected were entered on Excel sheets in the participant's own words and later converted to a transcript for analysis. Results: A total of 217 parents of children with amblyopia who were due for follow-up were contacted through telephone. The response rate for willingness to participate was only 36% (n = 78). Of these, 76% (n = 59) of parents reported that their child was compliant toward the treatment during the therapy period and 69% reported that their child was currently not on treatment for amblyopia. Conclusion: In the current study, we have observed that although reported compliance by parents during the therapy period was good, around 69% of patients had discontinued amblyopia therapy. Purpose: To assess the differences in the pattern of presentation of glaucoma emergency conditions during the various phases of pandemic-related travel restrictions: first wave-related lockdown, unlock period, and the second wave-related lockdown. Methods: The number of new emergency glaucoma conditions, the various diagnoses, and the total number of all new glaucoma patients presenting to the glaucoma services at five tertiary eye care centers in south India from 24th March 2020 to 30th June 2021 were collected from the electronic medical records and were analyzed. The data were compared with the corresponding time period in the year 2019. Results: In total, 620 patients presented with an emergency glaucoma diagnosis during the first wave-related lockdown as against 1337 during the same period in 2019 (P < 0.0001). During the unlock period, 2659 such patients visited the hospital compared with 2122 in 2019 (P = 0.0145). During the second wave-related lockdown, there were 351 emergency patients compared with 526 patients in 2019 (P < 0.0001). Lens-induced glaucomas (50.4%) and neovascular glaucoma (20.6%) were the most common diagnoses during the first wave-related lockdown. During the unlock period, there was a greater proportion of neovascular glaucoma (P = 0.0123). The second wave-related lockdown had a greater proportion of phacolytic glaucomas (P = 0.005) and acute primary angle closure (P = 0.0397) patients. Conclusion: The study demonstrates that emergency glaucoma care was grossly underutilized by the people during the lockdowns. Pediatric vision screening detects children at risk for visual conditions with the goal of connecting those in need with an eye care provider for evaluation and treatment. The primary aim for vision screening in younger children is the detection of those at risk for amblyopia, which can result in irreversible vision loss if left untreated. In older children, screening goals broaden to include the detection of risk for uncorrected refractive error. In the United States, professional organization guidelines and state-mandated requirements for vision screening vary widely across both the timing and components of screening. In this article, we describe the goals and components of pediatric vision screenings, current challenges, novel approaches to providing follow-up services through school-based vision programs, and future directions. Objective: To evaluate the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the profile of emergency eye-related visits and compare the findings with the same period before the pandemic. Methods: Cross-sectional study performed during one year at a reference eye hospital. Cases registered at the emergency Municipal Hospital Complex of Santo Andre, Brazil, between March, 2019 and February, 2020 were included in the study as the Pre-pandemic group. Cases registered between March, 2020 and February, 2021 were included as the Pandemic group. Cases were classified according to the International Classification of Diseases ICD-10 and Related Health Problems. Results: There was a decrease of 52.1% in the emergency eye care visits during the pandemic period (n=9,198) when compared to the pre-pandemic period (n=19,220), with significant reductions in nonspecific cases (-98.1%), postoperative visits (-67.0%), disorders of the conjunctiva (-54.1%), tear film (-49.4%) and refraction (-85.6%) during the pandemic period. Conditions such as retina disorders (+202.7%), sclera disorders (+76.2%), orbit disorders (+20.2%), glaucoma (+66.6%) and trauma (+19.4%) have shown increased rates, as well as those related to eyelids (+186.9%), cornea (+33.4%), uvea (+40.2%), and herpes (+55.3%). Conclusion: A drastic reduction in the number of eye-related emergency visits was observed during the Covid-19 pandemic, outlining a new profile of care, with higher frequency of sight-threatening conditions and lower frequency of contagious and non-specific diagnosis. Purpose: To access knowledge, attitude, and practices of Eye care practitioners (ECPs) towards COVID-19 guidelines and to determine their knowledge about use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Tertiary Eye Hospitals of Rawalpindi and Islamabad from October 2020 to March 2021. A total of 270 Eye care practitioners currently working in public and private hospitals were included in this study. Non-probability convenient sampling technique was used. Data was collected from individuals through an interview-based questionnaire after taking consent. Data was coded and analyzed by using SPSS version 26. The Chi-square test was used for further analysis. Results: Mean age of participants was 29.85 ± 7.482 years, ranging from 18 to 65 years. Females (67%) were slightly out-numbered than males of the total sample. Moreover, 50% of the respondents had adequate knowledge about COVID-19 while only 39.3% had a positive attitude towards COVID-19. Hours of practice and years of experience had an association with knowledge. Good practices were observed by only 43.3% of the total sample. Practices had an association with the department of work of ECPs. Conclusion: There is scarcity of knowledge among ECPs about COVID-19 and its preventive measures. Less than 50% ECPs with positive attitude and good practices towards COVID-19 indicate a dire need to train them for use of PPEs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To explore individual and community factors associated with adherence to physician recommended urgent eye visits via a tele-triage system during the COVID-19 pandemic. We retrospectively reviewed acute visit requests and medical exam data between April 6, 2020 and June 6, 2020. Patient demographics and adherence to visit were examined. Census tract level community characteristics from the U.S. Census Bureau and zip code level COVID-19 related death data from the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office were appended to each geocoded patient address. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, and logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the effects of individual and community variables on adherence to visit. Of 229 patients recommended an urgent visit, 216 had matching criteria on chart review, and 192 (88.9%) adhered to their visit. No difference in adherence was found based on individual characteristics including: age (p =.24), gender (p =.94), race (p =.56), insurance (p =.28), nor new versus established patient status (p =.20). However, individuals who did not adhere were more likely to reside in neighborhoods with a greater proportion of Blacks (59.4% vs. 33.4%; p =.03), greater unemployment rates (17.5% vs. 10.7%; p <.01), and greater cumulative deaths from COVID-19 (56 vs. 31; p =.01). Unemployment rate continued to be statistically significant after controlling for race and cumulative deaths from COVID-19 (p =.04). We found that as community unemployment rate increases, adherence to urgent eye visits decreases, after controlling for relevant neighborhood characteristics. Unemployment rates were highest in predominantly Black neighborhoods early in the pandemic, which may have contributed to existing racial disparities in eye care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies describe poor follow-up among children in ophthalmology prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the pandemic led to worse adherence for routine medical care in children, little information exists on pediatric ophthalmology follow-up adherence during COVID-19. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on follow-up adherence for children with eye disease, and identified characteristics associated with follow-up adherence. In this single-center study, the medical records of 519 new pediatric (≤18 years of age) patients seen during January, April, August, and December 2019 and 2021 were reviewed retrospectively. Patients were classified into two groups: adherent (patients who followed up within 30 days of recommended appointment time) or less-adherent (patients who followed up >30 days after recommended follow-up or never). Main outcome measure was patient adherence status. Follow-up adherence was similar before and during the COVID-19 pandemic (50.4% for 2019 and 49.6% for 2021 [ P = 0.40]). Patients that were less likely to be adherent in both univariate and multivariable analyses included those with public insurance (adjusted OR = 0.63 [95% CI, 0.40-1.00]; P = 0.05), and those recommended to follow-up ≥3 months (adjusted OR ≤ 0.10; P < 0.001). In addition, in univariate analysis, those who declined to self-report race (OR = 0.53 [95% CI, 0.29-0.95]; P = 0.04) and those seen by optometrists (OR = 0.42 [95% CI, 0.29-0.60]; P < 0.001) were less likely to be adherent, while patients who traveled ≥177 miles to their provider were more likely to be adherent (OR = 2.88 [95% CI, 1.17-7.55]; P = 0.02). Background: The emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) forced many eye care providers to implement telehealth services while in-person visits were reserved for essential and/or emergency eye care. Objective: This study documents how an optometry group successfully implemented telehealth to care for patients during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Design: Retrospective, comparative case series. Methods: Records were reviewed for patients seen in an academic optometry clinic from 23 March through 7 April 2020, the period of the Massachusetts stay-at-home advisory issued in response to COVID-19. Patients who completed telehealth visits were compared with those who received in-person care. Services delivered by telehealth included a check of symptoms, medication refills, health education, and assurance of future follow up. The study took into account the reason for each visit, as well as the rate of scheduled and completed follow-up appointments. Patient satisfaction with in-person care was evaluated by Press Ganey patient experience surveys. Results: Out of 855 patients scheduled, 421 patients completed telehealth encounters (49%), and 46 patients completed in-clinic visits (5.4%). A further 272 patients canceled appointments (32%), 123 patients were unable to be contacted (14%), and 8 patients declined care offered by telehealth (0.94%). Most patients who were cared for by telehealth returned to see optometrists (88%). By contrast, most patients who required in-person visits during this period were subsequently seen by ophthalmologists (58%, p < 0.001). Patient satisfaction remained high for in-person visits that took place during the COVID-19-related emergency, with improvements noted in patient satisfaction regarding 'information about delays' (47 % versus 100%, p = 0.007) and 'concern for questions or worries' (76% versus 100%, p = 0.037) compared with the same period 1 year prior. Conclusion: Optometrists rapidly embraced telehealth to deliver eye care to their patients during the COVID-19 public health emergency. PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to describe the impact of lockdown and unlock phases of the COVID-19 pandemic on the presentation of ocular and periocular tumors at a referral center in India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional, hospital-based study included 5811 patients presenting between March 25, 2017, and March 31, 2021. The data on the patients diagnosed with ocular and periocular tumors in one or both eyes presenting during the lockdown and unlock phases were compared with the respective time periods in the previous 3 years before COVID-19. RESULTS: The patient numbers dropped by 85% (45/295) of pre-COVID-19 volumes during the lockdown phase. This was mainly because of a 33% reduction in patients requiring inter-state travel. There was complete recovery of the outpatient numbers to 105% (139/132) of pre-COVID-19 volumes by March 2021. This gradual incremental trend was seen in patients with malignant tumors (145%) and was lower in those with benign tumors (89%) than pre-COVID-19 volumes by March 2021. There was an increase in the patients presenting with malignant tumors (49%; P = 0.45) during the lockdown phase. The proportion of patients requiring inter-state travel showed a near-complete recovery to 88% of pre-COVID-19 distribution by March 2021. CONCLUSION: The 1st year of the COVID-19 pandemic saw a significant decline in the number of patients presenting with ocular and periocular tumors. There was an increase in the proportion of malignant tumors and a decrease in benign tumors during the lockdown phase. BACKGROUND: The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has brought about change in the work environment, increasing remote and hybrid mode of work, presenting a compelling need to study visual ergonomics in this new work environment. OBJECTIVE: To assess computer vision symptoms and visual ergonomics in remote and hybrid work settings during the COVID-19 pandemic with a focus on eye to screen relationship. METHODS: The computer-vision symptom scale (CVSS17) questionnaire and questions about human factors and ergonomics were included in the survey conducted in September 2021. Sixty-six working professionals (mean age 37 years±5), working from home (n = 44) or in hybrid mode (n = 22) were included in the study. Cramer's V was used for the correlation coefficient between two categorical variables for assessing eye health in changing work environments. RESULTS: Compared to our previous study, the correlation between computer vision syndrome (CVS) symptoms is markedly higher. The population working in hybrid mode experienced eye heaviness with strain to see well (V = 0.6872, p = 0.002) and dryness in the eyes (V = 0.5912, p = 0.0179). The population working from home who are bothered by surrounding lights also report dryness in the eyes (V = 0.3846, p = 0.0005). Screen use hours are higher in work from home situations (43% work more than 9 hrs) than those in hybrid mode of work (4% work more than 9 hrs). CONCLUSION: A definite increase in CVS in most of the population working remotely or in hybrid environments is established through this study. BACKGROUND: The COVID‐19 pandemic caused an unprecedented move to emergency remote learning around the world, leading to increased digital screen time for children and adolescents. This review highlights the potential risk of increased screen time to the eye and general health and makes recommendations to mitigate the risks posed. METHODS: A narrative review of evidence of increased digital time during the COVID‐19 pandemic, the risks linked to increased screen time and offer possible steps to mitigate these in students. RESULTS: Digital screen time was found to have increased for children and adolescents in all the studies examined during the pandemic and data suggests that this has an impact on eye and general health. We discuss the associated risk factors and adverse outcomes associated with increased digital screen time. CONCLUSIONS: This review offers evidence of increased digital time, highlights some of the well‐known and not so well‐known risks linked to increased screen time, and offers possible steps to mitigate these in children and adolescents during the pandemic, as well as offering schools and parents strategies to support the eye health of children and adolescents post‐pandemic. We discuss a number of interventions to reduce the risk of eye strain, myopia, obesity, and related diseases that have been shown to be linked to increased digital screen time. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic led to the reorganization of the health care system. A decline in health- and life-saving procedures has been reported in various medical specialties. However, data on ophthalmic emergencies during lockdowns is limited. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, observational, case-control study of 2351 patients registered at the ophthalmic emergency department of a tertiary hospital in Poland during three national COVID-19 lockdowns (March/April 2020, November 2020, and March/April 2021) and corresponding months in 2019. Results: The total number of visits declined from a mean of 720/month in the non-COVID era to 304/month during COVID-19 lockdowns (p < 0.001). Ocular trauma incidence dropped significantly from 2019 (non-COVID months) to 2020/2021 (COVID group mean 201 vs. 97 patients monthly, respectively, p = 0.03). Of note, the percentage of foreign bodies removal was significantly higher during lockdowns than corresponding time in the non-COVID era. A downward trend for vitreous detachment and macular disorders cases was observed between COVID and non-COVID time. Uveitis and optic neuritis patients were seen more often during lockdowns (p < 0.001 and p = 0.0013, respectively). In contrast, the frequency of conjunctivitis and keratitis, potentially COVID-related problems, decreased significantly in COVID-19 time (mean 138 vs. 23 per month in non-COVID vs. COVID lockdowns, respectively, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The overall number of eye emergency visits declined during COVID-19 lockdowns. Conjunctivitis and keratitis rates dropped during the lockdowns. Background: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic had an unprecedented effect on eye care services. The present study was conducted to assess the varied eye diseases and care around COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at BBMCH, Balangir, Ophthalmology Department, Western Odisha, from September 2019 to May 2021 in three phases (i.e., September 2019 to March 2020, April to October 2020, November 2020 to March 2021). The total OPD consultations and emergency eye surgeries conducted around the COVID-19 period were retrieved from direct attendance in the OPD register, references, or tele-consultation. Results: Cumulative OPD eye consultations were found to be 13000, 3700, 7200 in pre-COVID, COVID and post-COVID period, respectively. Marked decrease in OPD cases (70%) was noticed in peak COVID period (April 2020 to October 2020) followed by slight increase during November 2020 to May 2021 i.e., (40% decrease). Allergic conjunctivitis was the commonest presentation in pre-COVID era, as compared to refractive error in COVID period. In post-COVID period, referrals, follow up cases, pending old surgical cases, red eyes formed major chunk of OPD attendance. Only 30% emergency cases underwent surgery during peak COVID, (Trauma cases, lens induced glaucoma, hypermature cataract, MLC cases, and one-eyed patients). But during post-COVID period this rose to 60%. Eight pediatric patients with intracorneal foreign body were given urgent treatment. Conclusion: Due to government guidelines and lockdown restrictions, majority (65%) of patients could not receive adequate treatment. Telemedicine has been a growing feature in ophthalmology in the UK, particularly since the inception of the Diabetic Retinal Screening Service (DRSS). The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this trend more than anyone would have envisaged and it is likely to remain a key part of care of patients with ophthalmic pathology. It is vital that however many consultations are undertaken, these meet the high-quality standards that patients and regulators expect. For a range of both common and emergency eye conditions that are frequently managed in the community, we explore the examinations and investigations required to provide a comprehensive assessment and accurate diagnosis in the community eye care setting. We also propose parameters and quality standards for each investigation to ensure that the clinician interpreting these has the required information to make an appropriate diagnosis. We suggest that providers of teleophthalmology consultations use these quality standards to minimise their risk of inappropriate diagnosis and treatment based on insufficient or inaccurate information and so to mitigate against the potential legal implications that can result from suboptimal clinical decisions. Specialised Independent Prescribing (IP) community optometrists provided acute eye care during the COVID-19 crisis ensuring that over-stretched hospital emergency eye care was supported, therefore local overall urgent eye care provision was not affected. Number of cases seen by hospital Rapid Access Clinic (RAC) between January 2020 and June 2020 were compared to number of cases seen by IP optometrists in community Acute Primary Care Ophthalmology Service (APCOS) during the same time period. Specifically, comparisons were made between the number of cases seen in RAC and the number of cases seen by APCOS during the period before COVID-19 emergency (January–March 2020) and for a similar timeframe thereafter (April–June 2020). Numbers treated by APCOS alone and those referred to RAC were also determined. The change in case numbers between the different healthcare settings was also studied. Increase in cases seen by APCOS between April (n = 391) and June (n = 641). Number of cases seen by RAC declined from 652 in March to 372 in April, increasing to 610 by June. This was still below maximum number of monthly cases seen by RAC pre-lockdown in January (861). Most of the cases seen by APCOS were managed in the community with 4% referred to RAC. Ophthalmology services delivered by IP specialised optometrists can safely and efficiently treat and manage the vast majority of urgent cases and mitigate the reduced capacity within hospital emergency eye clinics. Similarly, in rural South Australia, where travel was restricted for approximately four months in 2020, and again from December 2021 to March 2022, the regional health service initiated a tele-optometry program that utilised an ophthalmic nurse and an off-site optometrist to collaborate in providing refractive and eye health assessments approaching that which is available with traditional face-to-face care. Examples of successful models include a health service in the Northern Territory, where an ACCHS-employed Aboriginal eye health coordinator acted as a central point of contact for both the optometrist and the primary health care staff of the region, facilitating effective patient triage and support. We aimed to evaluate the effects of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic on the Ophthalmology Department. This study was based on data collected between January 2019 and November 2021. We divided patients scheduled for eye care during pre-COVID-19 (January–December 2019), early COVID-19 (January–December 2020), and late COVID-19 (January–November 2021) periods. Changes in the outpatient cancellation rate in each department were analyzed and compared in the pre-, early, and late periods. The basic information of cancellation and reason for not visiting the clinic were also analyzed. Overall, 121,042 patients were scheduled to visit the Sanggye Paik Hospital Ophthalmology Department. The overall cancellation rate was 19.13% during pre-COVID-19, 24.13% during early COVID-19, and 17.34% during late COVID-19. The reasons for not visiting the clinic included hospital, patient, and contact factors; hospitalization in other departments and hospitals; and death. The Strabismus/Pediatric Ophthalmology Department showed the highest cancellation rate of 24.21% over three years. There were no significant differences in the causes of hospital visits by period. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an overall decrease in the number of ophthalmic outpatients. Purpose: To study the use of teleophthalmology as a tool to manage patients with uveitis and to describe the experience of teleconsultation for uveitis at a tertiary eye care hospital in India during the two waves of the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods: A prospective observational case series of uveitis patients seeking teleconsultations during the first (March 25-May 2020) and second lockdown (April 27 to June 21, 2021) in a tertiary eye care center were analyzed.Results: There were 79 teleconsultations in the first and 89 teleconsultations in the second lockdown. A majority of the patients presented in the age group of 41-60 years in both the lockdowns. There were both new or primary consultations and follow-up patients (6% vs. 94%) in the first lockdown, and similarly in the second lockdown (8% new vs. 92% follow-up). The majority of patients resided in Bengaluru city (78% in the first and 76% in the second lockdown). After evaluation through video consultation, only 15% required a hospital referral in the first lockdown, whereas in the second lockdown, 21.3% were referred to the hospital. During the second lockdown, 20% presented with COVID-19 infection-related ailments.Conclusion: Based on our preliminary experience using a customized smartphone-based application for teleconsultation, we found it to be an alternative option to provide continuation of ophthalmic care to uveitis patients. Purpose: To describe the clinical profile of patients presenting with uveitis following COVID-19 infection at a tertiary care eye hospital in South India.Methods: In this retrospective chart review, all consecutive cases presenting with an acute episode of intraocular inflammation and a history of COVID-19 infection diagnosed within the preceding 6 weeks, between March 2020 and September 2021, were included. Data retrieved and analyzed included age, sex, laterality of uveitis, and site of inflammation. The diagnosis was categorized based on the SUN working group classification criteria for uveitis. Details regarding clinical features, investigations, ophthalmic treatment given, response to treatment, ocular complications, and status at last visit were also accessed. Statistical analysis of demographical data was done using Microsoft Excel 2019.Results: Twenty-one eyes of 13 patients were included in this hospital-based retrospective observational study. The study included six male and seven female patients. The mean age was 38 ± 16.8 years. Eight patients had bilateral involvement. Seven patients were diagnosed with anterior uveitis, three with intermediate uveitis, one with posterior uveitis, and two with panuveitis. All patients responded well to treatment and were doing well at their last visit. Two patients had complications that necessitated surgical treatment, following which they recovered good visual outcomes.Conclusion: With prompt diagnosis and appropriate management, all the patients with uveitis post-COVID-19 infection recovered with good visual outcomes. Objectives: To evaluate the management of the pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus clinic when strict quarantine conditions were adopted during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in Turkey. Materials and Methods: The study presents a review of the patients examined during the quarantine period. All patients were assessed with the highest possible level of personal protection. Results: Ten patients (6 girls, 4 boys) with a mean age of 9 years (range: 2-16) were evaluated. The patients presented 3-20 days after symptom onset. Ocular misalignment and diplopia were the main symptoms. Four of the 10 patients were diagnosed with sixth cranial nerve palsy and three patients were diagnosed with acute-onset comitant esotropia. Six patients had significant cranial magnetic resonance imaging findings. Conclusion: Acute-onset neurological conditions are more common during the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective To study the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on outpatient visits to eye care facilities in south India. Methods We used data on 7.69 million outpatient visits to primary (i.e. vision centres), secondary and tertiary Aravind Eye Care System's centres between January 2019 and June 2021. We compared outpatient numbers and outpatients' age and sex between the pandemic period and the pre-pandemic period in 2019 for all centres, whereas vision and ophthalmic assessments were compared for vision centres only. Findings During the first wave, the number of outpatient visits at tertiary, secondary and vison centres was 39% (647 968/1 656 296), 60% (170 934/283 176) and 73% (180 502/246 282) respectively, of 2019 levels. During the second wave, outpatient visits at tertiary, secondary and vision centres were 54% (385 092/710 949), 73% (88 383/121 739) and 79% (121 993/154 007), respectively, of 2019 levels. The proportion of outpatients who were female or younger than 20 years or older than 60 years was significantly lower during the first and second waves than in 2019 (P < 0.0001 for all). The proportion of outpatients whose worse eye vision was poorer than 5/60 or who required referral was significantly higher (P < 0.0001 for both). Conclusion Restrictive measurements led to declines in outpatient visits, however the decline was less at secondary and vision centres than at tertiary centres. To report the prevalence of preschool myopia after implementing a policy intervention promoting outdoor activities and the secular trend of myopia before and during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in a Taiwan preschool population. Repeated countywide population-based, cross-sectional surveys based on the Yilan Myopia Prevention and Vision Improvement Program (YMVIP). Among 23 930 kindergarteners 5 to 6 years of age from 7 school-year cohorts in Yilan County from 2014 through 2020, a total of 21 761 children (90.9%) were included for analysis. Since launching the YMVIP in August 2014, myopia prevention strategies, such as increasing outdoor activities (2 hours/weekday), have been promoted in all kindergartens, and countywide school-based eye examinations, including cycloplegic autorefraction, and caregiver-administered questionnaires have been carried out annually for all participants. The prevalence of myopia (spherical equivalent, ≤ –0.5 D in either eye) in each of the 7 school-year cohorts of preschoolers 5 to 6 years of age. The prevalence of myopia continuously decreased for 2 years after implementing the YMVIP: 2014 cohort, 15.5% (95% confidence interval [CI], 14.2%–16.8%); 2015 cohort, 13.5% (95% CI, 12.3%–14.7%); and 2016 cohort, 8.4% (95% CI, 7.4%–9.4%). Subsequent cohorts were exposed maximally to these school-based myopia prevention strategies, and the prevalence of myopia remained relatively stable, between 8.5% and 10.3%, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed a dose-dependent association between the duration of exposure to preventive strategies and the prevalence of myopia (up to 1-year YMVIP exposure, odds ratio, 0.86 [95% CI, 0.74–0.99]; up to 2-year YMVIP exposure, odds ratio, 0.56 [95% CI, 0.50–0.63]) after controlling other myopigenic factors. This population-based evidence showed high prevalence of preschool myopia and an L-shaped decline after introducing strategies to promote outdoor activities in kindergartens. Introduction: To elucidate the perceptions on eye care of patients affected by the disruption of outpatient and surgical ophthalmological services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey was conducted during the reopening of outpatient services at two tertiary eye care centres in Singapore and North India. Consecutive patients were recruited from general and specialist eye clinics in June 2020. Results: A total of 326 patients were recruited, 200 patients from Singapore and 126 patients from New Delhi, India. The most common eye conditions were diabetic retinopathy and uveitis or ocular inflammatory conditions in the Indian centre, whereas the most common in the Singaporean centre were cataract in the pre- or postoperative stage and glaucoma. For patients from the Indian centre, 61.9% felt that COVID-19 had negatively impacted their eye disease, 58.7% were more distressed by their eye disease, 70.8% could not access appropriate eye care, 66.6% were afraid of contracting COVID-19 in the clinic, and 61.9% were accepting of teleconsultations. For patients from the Singaporean centre, 13.5% felt that COVID-19 had negatively impacted their eye disease, 19.5% were more distressed by their eye disease, 21.5% could not access appropriate eye care, 35% were afraid of contracting COVID-19 in the clinic, and only 31% were accepting of teleconsultations. Conclusion: Patients from India appear to have been more negatively affected by the pandemic compared to patients from Singapore. This study highlights patients' perceptions of the impact of COVID-19 on eye care, perceived risks, ease of access to care and attitudes towards eye care during the pandemic. Patients' perceptions are integral in developing strategies for the best care possible. Each day, more and more information is becoming available about COVID. We now know more about its transmission, which steps help reduce its transmission, and which steps do not. As we learn more about COVID and adapt to the safety precautions necessary to keep our communities safe, we adapt our protocols. Objective: To analyze the reason why patients sought emergency eye care during the pandemic of COVID-19. Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study based on the analysis of medical records of patients seen at an ophthalmology emergency department of a private service in the city of Santos (SP) between March 11, 2020 and July 16, 2020. Results: A total of 386 patients were seen in the analyzed period. Most appointments (60.36%) were attended by women. People between 19 and 59 years old were the ones who most sought the emergency room (57.25%). When considering the profession of these patients, students and retired people presented the same proportion (10.26%), followed by housewives (6.99%). Of the total number of cases seen, 59 patients were diagnosed with conjunctivitis, while 58 were diagnosed with eye and orbit trauma. Conclusion: In the analyzed period, the ophthalmology emergency care predominantly received women in the age group between 19 and 59 years old, and the most frequent diagnoses were conjunctivitis and trauma. Objective: To assess safety practices among eye care workers in Nigeria during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: This research was a cross-sectional study. A structured electronic questionnaire was distributed among eye care workers (ophthalmologists, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses) across the six geographical zones of Nigeria. Information on socio-demographics, COVID-19 infection, current working conditions and safety practices were obtained. Data analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS Inc. Chicago Illinois, USA) for windows, version 22. Results: A total of 236 eye care workers participated in the study; their mean (±SD) age was 37.13 (±8.141) years, 125 (53%) were females, and 145 (61.4%) worked in a tertiary care hospital. All participants described COVID-19 as a viral disease and 98.3% agreed that the disease can affect the eyes. Outpatient clinic consultation was recorded as the highest (77.7%) service provided during the pandemic. Regarding preventive practices, 95% of eye care workers wore facemasks, 82.4% wore gloves during ophthalmic examination and Hazmat suit was the least used protective device (2.5%). About three-quarters (77.5%) reported feeling unsafe in their working environment and 63.9% were dissatisfied with the personal protective device provided by hospitals to eye care workers. Conclusion: COVID-19 pandemic presented an unprecedented challenge for eye care workers; with the practice of ophthalmology posing a high risk of transmission of the virus. Purpose: To measure the COVID-19 pandemic impact on missed ophthalmology clinic visits and the influence of patient and eye disease characteristics on likelihood of missing clinic visits before and during the pandemic. Patients and Methods: A retrospective observational study analyzing eye clinic patients at a large tertiary care academic institution. We identified patients scheduled for eye care during pre-COVID-19 (January 1–February 29, 2020) and early COVID-19 (March 16–May 31, 2020) time periods. Missed appointment frequency and characteristics were evaluated during each time period. Multivariable logistic regression models were developed to examine adjusted odds of having at least one missed appointment during a given time period. Covariates included age, sex, race/ethnicity, marital status, preferred language (non-English vs English), insurance, distance from clinic, and diagnosis. Results: Overall, 82.0% (n = 11,998) of pre-COVID-19 patients completed all scheduled visits, compared to only 59.3% (n = 9020) during COVID-19. Missed visits increased dramatically in late March 2020, then improved week by week through the end of May 2020. General ophthalmology/cataract and strabismus clinics had the highest rates of missed clinic visits during the COVID-19 period; neuro-ophthalmology, retina, cornea, oculoplastics and glaucoma had the lowest. Females, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, ages 50+, and married patients had higher adjusted odds of missing clinic visits, both pre-COVID-19 and during COVID-19. Asian, elderly, and cataract patients had the highest adjusted odds of missing clinic visits during COVID-19 and had significant increases in odds compared to pre-COVID-19. Non-married, diabetic macular edema, and wet age-related macular degeneration patients had the lowest adjusted odds of missed visits during COVID-19. Conclusion: Missed clinic visits increased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly among elderly and nonwhite patients. Purpose: To study the changing trends in the morphology of cataracts at a tertiary eye care center in South India due to COVID-19 pandemic-related national lockdown. Methods: A retrospective study conducted at a tertiary eye care center in Andhra Pradesh state of South India, which included 1724 patients (1753 eyes) who underwent cataract surgery at our center during April 2019–July 2019 (1298 eyes of 1271 patients) and April 2020–July 2020 (455 eyes of 453 patients). Factors studied included preoperative lens status, associated phacodonesis or subluxation, pupil size, other eye lens status, associated retinal problems, glaucoma, and complications during surgery. Postoperative uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), corneal clarity, intraocular pressure (IOP), and disc status at postoperative day 1, 1 week, and 1-month visits were compared. Results: A significantly lower proportion of nuclear sclerosis (decreased from 83.2% in last year before lockdown to 55.2% during lockdown) and significantly higher proportions of mature, brown, or black cataract and phacomorphic, phacolytic, or Morgagnian cataract (increased from 15.5% in last year before lockdown to 43.8% during lockdown) were observed. The proportion of small-incision cataract surgery decreased significantly (from 63.2% to 57.4%), whereas the proportion of phacoemulsification increased significantly (from 35.9% to 41.5%) during lockdown as compared to last year. A significantly higher proportion of eyes with small pupils and association with retinal pathology were also observed during the lockdown. Conclusion: During the national lockdown, there was a shift from nuclear sclerosis grade toward mature, brown, black grade of cataracts. In addition, the proportion of small-incision cataract surgery decreased significantly whereas the proportion of phacoemulsification increased significantly during the lockdown. Purpose: To assess the ophthalmic practice pattern among ophthalmologists in India amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: An online questionnaire-based analysis was performed among members of the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) and results were analyzed using SPSS software version 20. Results: A total of 2253 responses were received. The majority of the participants (72.6%) were between 30 and 60 years of age and were into private practice (64.7%). During the lockdown, over one-third of participant ophthalmologists reported not attending any OPD patients, whereas a majority (64%) provided only emergency ophthalmic services. During the COVID-19 pandemic, <15% surgeries were performed compared to the pre-COVID-19 era by 81% of participants, whereas elective surgeries were performed by only 4.3%. The proportion of participants utilizing telemedicine in ophthalmology showed a two-fold rise from the pre-COVID-19 era (21.9%) to the COVID-19 pandemic (46%). Over half of the participants reported following the AIOS guidelines, reducing clinic hours, use of screening questionnaires, minimizing staff, and use of breath shield on a slit lamp as precautionary measures to reduce the exposure. Over 95% of ophthalmologists were satisfied (score > 5/10) by the AIOS guidelines for ophthalmic practice during COVID-19. Conclusion: COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected the ophthalmic care services across India with telemedicine emerging as a major rescue. The majority of practicing ophthalmologists are satisfied with guidelines provided by AIOS for ophthalmic care during the COVID-19 pandemic and have implemented the same in their setup. Three-dimensional printing enables precise modeling of anatomical structures and has been employed in a broad range of applications across medicine. Its earliest use in eye care included orbital models for training and surgical planning, which have subsequently enabled the design of custom-fit prostheses in oculoplastic surgery. It has evolved to include the production of surgical instruments, diagnostic tools, spectacles, and devices for delivery of drug and radiation therapy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, increased demand for personal protective equipment and supply chain shortages inspired many institutions to 3D-print their own eye protection. Cataract surgery, the most common procedure performed worldwide, may someday make use of custom-printed intraocular lenses. Perhaps its most alluring potential resides in the possibility of printing tissues at a cellular level to address unmet needs in the world of corneal and retinal diseases. Early models toward this end have shown promise for engineering tissues which, while not quite ready for transplantation, can serve as a useful model for in vitro disease and therapeutic research. As more institutions incorporate in-house or outsourced 3D printing for research models and clinical care, ethical and regulatory concerns will become a greater consideration. This report highlights the uses of 3D printing in eye care by subspecialty and clinical modality, with an aim to provide a useful entry point for anyone seeking to engage with the technology in their area of interest. Introduction: Numerous digital tools to self-assess visual acuity have been introduced. The recent COVID-19 pandemic underlined the need for high-quality remote care. This review gives a current overview of digital tools for remotely assessing visual function and reports on their accuracy. Methods: We searched the databases of Embase and Pubmed, and systematically reviewed the literature, conforming to PRISMA guidelines. Two preliminary papers were added from medRxiv.org. The main outcome was the agreement of the digital tools with conventional clinical charts, as expressed by mean differences and 95% limits of agreement (95% LoA). Results: Seventeen publications included studies reported on 13 different digital tools. Most of the tools focus on distance visual acuity. The mean differences of the digital tools ranged from − 0.08 to 0.10 logMAR, when compared to traditional clinical assessments. The 95% LoA differed considerably between studies: from ± 0.08 logMAR to ± 0.47 logMAR, though the variability was less pronounced for higher visual acuities. Conclusion: The low mean differences between digital visual acuity assessments and reference charts suggest clinical equivalence, though the wide 95% LoA identify a lower precision of digital self-assessments. This effect diminishes in individuals with better visual acuities, which is a common feature of visual acuity assessments. There is great potential for the digital tools to increase access to eye care and we expect the accuracy of the current tools to improve with every iteration in technology development. Background: We investigated the volume and the characteristics of pediatric eye emergency department (PEED) consultations performed at our tertiary eye center during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic and we compared them to those carried out in the same time interval of the previous three years. Methods: Ophthalmic emergency examinations of patients aged ≤18 years old and done during the national COVID-19 lockdown (March 9th, 2020 – May 3rd, 2020) and in the corresponding date range of the previous three years (2017, 2018, and 2019) have been considered and reviewed. The following features were retrieved and analyzed: age, gender, duration and type of accused symptoms, traumatic etiology, and the discharge diagnosis. Results: 136, 133, and 154 PEED visits have been performed respectively in 2017, 2018, and 2019, while 29 patients presented in 2020. Therefore, the volume of PEED activity decreased by 79.4% (p < 0.0001). Demographical and clinical characteristics were comparable to those of the pre-COVID period. Despite the absolute reduction in the number of traumas, urgent conditions increased significantly from 30.7 to 50.7% (p = 0.024). Conclusions: PEED activity decreased consistently after the onset of the pandemic and it was mainly attended by those children whose conditions required prompt assistance, reducing the number of patients diagnosed with milder pathologies. At the end of the emergency, better use of PEED could avoid overcrowding and minimize waste, allowing resource optimization for the management of urgent cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate attitudes and perceptions toward virtual health (VH) and its usage among eye care providers before, during, and after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Materials and Methods: In April and May 2020, an online survey comprised of questions regarding past and current VH practices, as well as plans for future use was distributed among eye care providers nationwide. Results: Of the 117 eye care providers who completed the survey, 96.6% were not using VH before the COVID-19 pandemic. In contrast, 77.4% reported using VH during the pandemic. The majority of visits were for red eye (64.4%, n = 56) and ocular surface complaints (58.6%, n = 51). Examination components tested virtually varied, but most respondents felt these were at least "somewhat reliable." Almost half of respondents (45%) felt it was "very easy" or "somewhat easy" to implement VH and the majority (53.8%, n = 43) were able to get it up and running in under a week. The majority felt the transition to VH was positive (57.5%), however, only 50.4% (n = 53) of those providers planned to use VH regularly once able to see patients safely in clinic again. Conclusions: While the majority of U.S. eye care providers who responded were not using VH before the COVID-19 pandemic, just months into the U.S. outbreak, 77.4% were using VH in their daily practice. In general, providers used these platforms for urgent examinations, adnexal disease, and postoperative care most often. In the context of the COVID‐19 pandemic, this paper provides recommendations for medical eye care during the easing of control measures after lockdown. The guidelines presented are based on a literature review and consensus among all Spanish Ophthalmology Societies regarding protection measures recommended for the ophthalmologic care of patients with or without confirmed COVID‐19 in outpatient, inpatient, emergency and surgery settings. We recommend that all measures be adapted to the circumstances and availability of personal protective equipment at each centre and also highlight the need to periodically update recommendations as we may need to readopt more restrictive measures depending on the local epidemiology of the virus. These guidelines are designed to avoid the transmission of SARS‐CoV‐2 among both patients and healthcare staff as we gradually return to normal medical practice, to prevent postoperative complications and try to reduce possible deficiencies in the diagnosis, treatment and follow‐up of the ophthalmic diseases. Background: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a web-based tele-triage system was created to prioritize in-person clinic visits and ensure safety at the University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences during a statewide shelter-in-place order. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of the tele-triage system on urgent visit volume and explore the characteristics of acute visit requests at a tertiary referral eye center.Methods: This retrospective study analyzed acute visit requests between April 6, 2020 and June 6, 2020. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, ANOVA, and bivariate logistic regression were used to compare variables with a p-value of 0.05.Results: Three hundred fifty-eight surveys were completed. Mean age was 49.7 ± 18.8 years (range 2-91). The majority of requests were determined as urgent (63.0%) or emergent (0.8%). Forty-nine patients had recent eye trauma (13.7%), and the most common reported symptoms were new onset eye pain (25.7%) and photophobia (22.9%). Most patients were self-referred (63.7%), though provider referral was more common in patients with symptoms of new onset lid swelling (p < 0.01), diplopia (p < 0.01), flashing lights (p = 0.02), or droopy eyelid (p < 0.01). Patients presenting with symptom onset within 48 h tended to be younger (45.8 years) versus those with symptom duration of 48 h to 1 week (49.6 years), or more than 1 week (52.6 years; p < 0.01).Conclusion: This novel tele-triage system screened out one-third of acute visit requests as non-urgent, which limited in-person visits during the initial shelter-in-place period of the pandemic. Purpose: Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous authors have published data demonstrating retinal changes found in patients with COVID-19. However, others have debated the significance of these findings and the effects of COVID-19 on the retina remain uncertain. This study aims to better understand retinal findings in patients with COVID-19. Patients and Methods: A retrospective review of patients with a history of a positive COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction test was performed between March 1st, 2020 and October 31st, 2020. Patients were included if they presented within 90 days of their first positive COVID-19 test and underwent color fundus photography and/or OCT of the macula. All images were reviewed by two independent graders who assessed the presence of retinal heme, cotton wool spots, vascular sheathing, and disc edema, as well as hyper-reflective changes, intra-retinal fluid, and sub-retinal fluid on OCT. Results: A total of 119 eyes from 61 patients were included. Among 83 eyes which underwent OCT of the macula, inner retinal hyper-reflective changes were seen in 16.9% (n=14), outer retinal hyper-reflective changes in 18.1% (n=15), intra-retinal fluid in 28.9% (n=24), and sub-retinal fluid in 14.5% (n=12). Among 48 eyes which underwent color fundus photography, retinal hemorrhage was seen in 27.1% (n=13), optic disc edema in 2.1% (n=1), and cotton wool spots in none of the eyes. Sub-analysis of 70 eyes from 41 patients with no alternative retinal pathology to potentially explain the above findings revealed none of the above exam findings on OCT of the macula (n=35), fundus photography (n=28), or documented exam (n=66). Conclusion: While a number of patients seen after COVID-19 infection demonstrated retinal findings, all could be explained by pre-existing retinal conditions. In a sub-group of eyes without pre-existing retinal disease, we did not identify any retinal findings that could be associated with COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
