Background: In 2014, the Hazelwood coalmine fire shrouded the regional Australian town of Morwell in smoke and ash for 6 weeks. One of the fire's by‐products, PM2.5, is associated with an increased risk of COVID‐19 and severe disease. However, it is unclear whether the effect persisted for years after exposure. In this study, we surveyed a cohort established prior to the pandemic to determine whether PM2.5 from the coalmine fire increased long‐term vulnerability to COVID‐19 and severe disease. Methods: From August to December 2022, 612 members of the Hazelwood Health Study's adult cohort, established in 2016/17, participated in a follow‐up survey that included standardized items to capture COVID‐19 cases, as well as questions about hospitalization and vaccinations. Associations were evaluated in crude and adjusted logistic regression models. Results: A total of 268 (44%) participants self‐reported or met symptom criteria for having had COVID‐19 at least once. All models found a positive association, with odds of COVID‐19 increasing by between 4% and 30% for a 10 μg/m3 increase in coalmine fire‐related PM2.5 exposure. However, the association was significant in only 2 of the 18 models. There were insufficient hospitalizations to examine severity (n = 7; 1%). Conclusion: The findings are inconclusive on the effect of coalmine fire‐related PM2.5 exposure on long‐term vulnerability to COVID‐19. Given the positive association that was robust to modelling variations as well as evidence for a causal mechanism, it would be prudent to treat PM2.5 from fire events as a long‐term risk factor until more evidence accumulates. Surveying a cohort established before the pandemic, we investigated long‐term COVID‐19 vulnerability due to coalmine fire smoke exposure. There was a positive but generally non‐significant association between PM2.5 and COVID‐19. The COVID-19 pandemic made it difficult for Native American populations to access health information. Through funding from the Network of The National Library of Medicine Region 4, a community library was able to enhance their native and nonnative health collections for distribution on the Wind River Reservation in Central Wyoming. The book mobile was originally funded by the Wyoming State Library through American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 funding to increase literacy efforts during the pandemic. Materials were distributed at multiple locations throughout the reservation and individuals indicated they appreciated the materials being provided. This program was successful in distributing health information to an underserved priority population within the United States. Hopefully, similar programs would be successful in enhancing health education programs with other priority populations in both the United States and the world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This scoping review aims to describe the main barriers to food security imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic in low-income U.S. households, identify effective community-based implementation frameworks and strategies, and discuss the lessons learned from implementing community-based approaches during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most cited barriers were categorized into the Community/Society-Policy category of "Social determinants of health in communities." Out of the twelve included studies, only five (42%) adopted an implementation framework in their food-insecurity interventions. This study can guide the development and sustainability of food programming during emergencies with possible transfer of lessons learned to food programs in low-income populations. • Despite a reduction in traffic volumes over the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been an increase in severe injury crashes. • Shopping areas recorded a high proportion of crashes prior to the lockdown order. • Speeding, DUI, and weekends accounted for a significant proportion of crashes during the pandemic. • There are lessons to be learned on traffic safety planning and management for future pandemics. With the rising number of cases and deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic, nations and local governments, including many across the U.S., imposed travel restrictions on their citizens. This travel restriction order led to a significant reduction in traffic volumes and a generally lower exposure to crashes. However, recent preliminary statistics in the US suggest an increase in fatal crashes over the period of lockdown in comparison to the same period in previous years. This study sought to investigate how the pandemic affected road crashes and crash outcomes in Alabama. Daily vehicle miles traveled and crashes were obtained and explored. To understand the factors associated with crash outcomes, four crash-severity models were developed: (1) Single-vehicle (SV) crashes prior to lockdown order (Normal times SV); (2) multi-vehicle (MV) crashes prior to lockdown order (Normal times MV); (3) Single-vehicle crashes after lockdown order (COVID times SV); and (4) Multi-vehicle crashes after lockdown order (COVID times MV). The models were developed using the first 28 weeks of crashes recorded in 2020. The findings of the study reveal that although traffic volumes and vehicle miles traveled had significantly dropped during the lockdown, there was an increase in the total number of crashes and major injury crashes compared to the period prior to the lockdown order, with speeding, DUI, and weekends accounting for a significant proportion of these crashes. These observations provide useful lessons for road safety improvements during extreme events that may require statewide lockdown, as has been done with the COVID-19 pandemic. Traffic management around shopping areas and other areas that may experience increased traffic volumes provide opportunities for road safety stakeholders to reduce the occurrence of crashes in the weeks leading to an announcement of any future statewide or local lockdowns. On November 18–19, 2019, the Immunity of Canadians and Risk of Epidemics (iCARE) Network convened a workshop in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The objectives of the workshop were to raise the profile of sero-epidemiology in Canada, discuss best practice and methodological innovations, and strategize on the future direction of sero-epidemiology work in Canada. In this conference report, we describe the presentations and discussions from the workshop, and comment on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on serosurveillance initiatives, both in Canada and abroad.
