Abstract

This paper focuses on proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) operation at current densities in the order of 6 A/cm2. Such high current densities are conceivable when the traditional carbon fiber papers are replaced with perforated metal plates as the gas diffusion layer to enhance waste heat removal, and at the same time the relative humidity inside the fuel cell is kept below 100% by applying appropriate operating conditions as was found in previous one-dimensional modeling work. In the current paper, we applied a three-dimensional, multi-phase computational fluid dynamics model based on Ansys-CFX to obtain additional insight into the underlying physics. The calculated pressure drops are in very good agreement with previous one-dimensional modeling work, and the current densities in all case studies are in the order of 5–6 A/cm2, but different from the previous one-dimensional study, the results suggest that the relative humidity is very close to 100% throughout the entire channel length when the inlet relative humidity is 100%, ensuring best hydration cell conditions and hence best performance. Importantly, the model results suggest that fuel cell performance at a high current density in conjunction with relatively low stoichiometric flow ratios around 1.5–2 is possible. Abstract

Numerical simulations based on Computational Fluid Dynamic techniques are performed to analyze the possibility of feeding a biomass-derived syngas into the combustion chamber upstream of the hoods for tissue-paper drying, to replace fossil fuels and thus decarbonize the plant. It was observed that, in the context of Favre-Averaged Navier–Stokes equations simulation, syngas requires detailed kinetics and finite-rate approaches, as the fast-chemistry ones, largely employed in the industrial practice for conventional fuels, lead to unreliable results. The actual chamber, originally designed to be fed with liquid petroleum gas, does not operate properly when fueled with syngas, with incomplete oxidation of carbon monoxide. Numerical simulations have proven how very few modifications of the chamber can be devised to permit feeding efficiently the syngas, obtaining low pollutant emissions and meeting the desired requirements in terms of flow and thermal uniformity for the drying process. The solution proposed in the present study, with the effective use of a biomass-derived syngas to feed the drying section of a tissue paper plant, will allow saving approximately 8500 ton/y of CO 2 emissions in comparison with today's fossil fuel carbon footprint. 30. Flow analysis on the ventral gap of a paper airplane.

Abstract

It is a challenging work to design micro aerial vehicle with great aerodynamic performance because the tiny wingspan at low-Reynolds-number cannot provide lift efficiently. The aerodynamic configuration of a classic delta-wing paper airplane is investigated in the present work with numerical method to discover its potential for micro aerial vehicle designs. Furthermore, the effect of the ventral gap on the aerodynamic characteristics of the paper airplane is investigated herein. The stall angles of attack reach 37.5° and 40°, respectively, for ventral opened configuration and the closed one, and the maximum lift coefficient reaches 1.49 and 1.46. The ventral-opened configuration has negative pitching moment coefficient (−0.01431) even at 37.5° while the closed one has a positive coefficient (0.01402). The reason may be the gap leads to a strong back-flow vortex before the trailing edge in the ventral gap which produces a strong nose-down moment. This work presents a dynamic modeling approach for analyzing the behavior of a bi-material cantilever actuator structure, consisting of a strip of filter paper bonded to a strip of tape. The actuator's response is induced by a mismatch strain generated upon wetting, leading to the bending of the cantilever. The study delves into a comprehensive exploration of the dynamic deflection characteristics of the bilayer structure. It untangles the intricate connections among the saturation, modulus, hygro-expansion strain, and deflection, while uniquely addressing the challenges stemming from fluid–structure coupling. To solve the coupled fluid–solid differential equations, a combined numerical method is employed. This involves the application of the Highly Simplified Marker and Cell (HSMAC) technique for fluid flow analysis and the Finite Difference Method (FDM) for response deflection computation. In terms of the capillary flow model, the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations closely align with the classical Washburn relationship, depicting the wetted front's evolution over time. Furthermore, the numerical findings demonstrate that heightened saturation levels trigger an increase in hygro-expansion strain, consequently leading to a rapid rise in response deflection until a static equilibrium is achieved. This phenomenon underscores the pivotal interplay among saturation, hygro-expansion strain, and deflection within the system. Additionally, the actuator's response sensitivity to material characteristics is highlighted. As the mismatch strain evolving from paper hygro-expansion diminishes, a corresponding reduction in the axial strain causes a decrease in response deflection. The dynamic parameter demonstrates that the deflection response of the bilayer actuator diminishes as dynamic pressure decreases, reaching a minimal level beyond which further changes are negligible. This intricate correlation underscores the device's responsiveness to specific material traits, offering prospects for precise behavior tuning. The dependence of paper modulus on saturation levels is revealed to significantly influence bilayer actuator deflection. With higher saturation content, the modulus decreases, resulting in amplified deflection. Finally, strong concordance is observed among the present fluidically coupled model, the static model, and empirical data—a testament to the accuracy of the numerical formulation and results presented in this study. Abstract

The cigarette filter is an essential component of modern cigarettes and studying the flow distribution within the cigarette filter is of great significance in reducing the harm of cigarettes and optimizing smoking sensations. As the object of numerical simulation research, a three-dimensional model of the cigarette was accurately constructed through micro-CT reverse engineering, achieving a scanning accuracy of 4.05 μm. An overall porous media model of the cigarette filter was established to characterize the pressure distribution inside the filter. Based on the three-dimensional reconstruction, a local simulation model of the cavity-filtered filter was created by extracting a 1/36 geometric model. The simulation results of the overall porous media model of the cigarette filter were used as the pressure boundary conditions for the local simulation model of the cavity-filtered filter, and the effects of the wrapped paper and cavity on the flow field were analyzed. The results show that the simulated pressure drop in the overall porous media model of the cigarette filter had a deviation of less than 3.5% compared to the experimental results. This suggests that the porous media model can effectively predict the changes in pressure drop within the filter. When both wrapped paper and cavity were present, the velocity at the interface between acetate fiber and wrapped paper increased by 141.54%, while the pressure approached 0 Pa. Similarly, at the interface between acetate fiber and cavity, the velocity increased by 130.77%. It indicates that both wrapped paper and cavity significantly influenced the flow field characteristics within the cigarette filter. Additionally, as the porosity of the wrapped paper gradually increased from 0.69 to 0.99 in the radial direction, the fluid velocity increased by 14.46%, while the fluid pressure decreased by 29.09%. These changes were particularly evident when the porosity was below 0.87.

Abstract

Fluid/fluid interfaces and interfacial rheology are important areas of research for rheologists and modelers. The authors examine the available experimental and theoretical models for the dilatational rheology of fluid/fluid interfaces and discuss the effect of the non-linear character of dilatational deformation on the rheological response of these interfaces. They derive an analytical expression for the fluid inertial kernel for a Maxwell fluid, and they also propose a general method to provide accurate approximations of this expression for complex fluids. These types of processes can occur in flows of foam and emulsion-based applications along with certain chemical processes such as liquid-liquid extraction, froth flotation, wastewater treatment, or tertiary oil recovery.
