The corrugated p-base (CB) structure has been acknowledged as an effective method to improve the maximum controllable current (MCC) of asymmetric integrated gate-commutated thyristor (IGCT), but never clarified in symmetrical devices such as reverse blocking IGCT (RB-IGCT). This study focuses on the influence of the CB structure on the MCC and the failure mechanism of RB-IGCT. First of all, by employing the CB structure in the RB-IGCT samples, it is verified that the CB structure can improve MCC of the symmetrical devices by more than 50%, no matter under high or low dc-link voltages. Moreover, regarding the scenario under the high dc-link voltage, the effect of the CB structure on the dynamic avalanche is analyzed via simulation, and the improvement of MCC and the positive trend of MCC upon temperature are further clarified. As to the scenario under the low dc-link voltage, distinct failure phenomenon and negative temperature dependence of MCC are observed evidentially on the symmetric devices with CB structure. To explain these failure characteristics that are conflicting with the well-acknowledged dynamic avalanche failure, a novel failure mode named cathode retrigger failure is proposed in this study. It is believed that this study not only deciphers the fundamental mechanisms of the CB structure in RB-IGCT, but also provides practical strategy to optimize the symmetric IGCT devices. Rechargeable sodium metal batteries (SMBs) have emerged as promising alternatives to commercial Li‐ion batteries because of the natural abundance and low cost of sodium resources. However, the overuse of metallic sodium in conventional SMBs limits their energy densities and leads to severe safety concerns. Herein, we propose a sodium‐free‐anode SMB (SFA‐SMB) configuration consisting of a sodium‐rich Na superionic conductor‐structured cathode and a bare Al/C current collector to address the above challenges. Sodiated Na3V2(PO4)3 in the form of Na5V2(PO4)3 was investigated as a cathode to provide a stable and controllable sodium source in the SFA‐SMB. It provides not only remarkable Coulombic efficiencies of Na plating/stripping cycles but also a highly reversible three‐electron redox reaction within 1.0–3.8 V versus Na/Na+ confirmed by structural/electrochemical measurements. Consequently, an ultrahigh energy density of 400 Wh kg−1 was achieved for the SFA‐SMB with fast Na storage kinetics and impressive capacity retention of 93% after 130 cycles. A narrowed voltage window (3.0–3.8 V vs. Na/Na+) further increased the lifespan to over 300 cycles with a high retained specific energy of 320 Wh kg−1. Therefore, the proposed SFA‐SMB configuration opens a new avenue for fabricating next‐generation batteries with high energy densities and long lifetimes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries are promising and safe energy storage technologies. However, current aqueous electrolyte Zn-ion battery technology is hindered by undesirable reactions between the electrolyte and electrodes, which can lead to Zn dendrite growth, gas evolution, and cathode degradation. In this study, a hydrated gel electrolyte (HGE) that combines adiponitrile (ADN) and Zn(ClO4)r6H2O in a polymeric framework is created. ADN is found to stabilize the interface between the electrolyte and anode/cathode, enabling smooth Zn stripping/plating and reducing parasitic reactions. The HGE is simple to fabricate, inexpensive, safe, and flexible. Zn/HGE/Zn symmetrical cells can cycle more than 1000 h at 0.5 mA cm-2 and 2000 h at 0.2 mA cm-2 without short-circuiting, indicating effective suppression of Zn dendrites. Moreover, with a NASICON-type Sr-doped Na3V2(PO4)3 (SNVP) cathode, a Zn/HGE/SNVP full cell can be cycled over 8000 times at 10 C while retaining a high capacity of 90 mAh g-1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Compared with integrated gate commutated thyristors (GCTs), an integrated emitter turn-off thyristor (IETO) has a potential of higher turn-off current capability and requires lower power consumption for gate driver units, which is more suitable for high-power applications. Thus, in this article, an advanced design of 4-in IETO was presented. To reduce the gate commutation impedance and enhance the turn-off current, the turn-off circuit with low impedance DirectFETs was integrated into the housing. And the housing structure was carefully designed to provide a compact current commutation path. Then, a 4-in IETO prototype based on a 4.5 kV/5 kA GCT wafer was developed. Experimental results show that its maximum turn-off current was over 8.1 kA with an extremely short commutation time of 130 ns. And the total commutation inductance was only 0.38 nH. Additionally, the thermal and mechanical characteristics of the housing were also taken into consideration during design and verified by the thermal simulation and mechanical stress test. Due to the presence of the hierarchical freestanding structure, outstanding MXene conductive networks and abundant oxygen vacancy, the d-NVO@MXene hybrid film exhibits excellent electrochemical properties. [Display omitted] Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) have gained extensive attention due to the numerous advantages of zinc, such as low redox potential, high abundance, low cost as well as high theoretical specific capacity. However, the development of AZIBs is still hampered due to the lack of suitable cathodes. In this work, the freestanding defective ammonium vanadate@MXene (d-NVO@MXene) hybrid film was synthesized by simple vacuum filtration strategy. Due to the presence of the hierarchical freestanding structure, outstanding MXene conductive networks and abundant oxygen vacancy (in the d-NVO nanoribbons), the d-NVO@MXene hybrid film can not only expose more active sites but also possess outstanding conductivity and kinetics of charge transfer/ion diffusion. When the d-NVO@MXene hybrid film was directly used as the cathode, it displayed a high specific capacity of 498 mAh/g at 0.5 A/g and superior cycling stability performance with near 100 % coulomb efficiency. Furthermore, the corresponding storage mechanism was elucidated by ex situ various characterizations. [Display omitted] Aqueous zinc-ions batteries with low cost, reliable safety, high theoretical specific capacity and eco-friendliness have captured conspicuous attention in large-scale energy storage. However, the developed cathodes often suffer from low electrical conductivity and sluggish Zn2+ diffusion kinetics, which severely hampers the development of aqueous zinc-ions batteries. Herein, we successfully prepare Mg/PANI/V 2 O 5 •nH 2 O (MPVO) nanosheets through conducting polymers (polyaniline) and metal ions (Mg2+) co-intercalated strategy and systematically explore its electrochemical performance as cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Benefitting from the synergistic effect of polyaniline and Mg2+ co-intercalated, the MPVO exhibits larger interlayer spacing and higher electrical conductivity than the single guest intercalation, which significantly enhances the electrochemical kinetics. As a consequence, the MPVO cathodes deliver superior specific capacity, rate capability and long-term cycling performance. Moreover, multiple characterizations and theoretical calculations are executed to expound the relevant mechanism. [Display omitted] Aqueous zinc ion batteries have attracted extensive concern as a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage because of their high theoretical specific capacity, low cost and inherent safety. However, the lacking of applicable cathode materials with outstanding electrochemical performance have severely hindered the further development of aqueous zinc ion batteries. Herein, we report a hierarchical accordion-like manganese oxide@carbon (MnO@C) hybrid with strong interaction heterointerface and comprehensively inquire into its electrochemical performance as cathode materials for aqueous zinc ion batteries. The unique hierarchical accordion-like layered structure coupling with strong interaction heterointerface between small MnO and carbon matrix efficaciously improve the ion/electron transfer process and enhance structure stability of the MnO@C hybrid. Benefitting from these unique advantages, the MnO@C hybrid bestows excellent specific capacity of 456 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1. Impressively, the MnO@C hybrid presents distinguished long-term cycling stability with fairly low decay rates of only 0.0079 % per cycle even over 2000 cycles at 2000 mA g−1. Moreover, comprehensive characterizations are executed to elucidate the mechanism involved. Amorphous V 2 O 5 @C hybrid formed by electrochemical oxidation strategy exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance. [Display omitted] Aqueous zinc-ion batteries receive more and more attentions on account of their low cost, high theoretical density and inherent safety. Nevertheless, the lack of suitable cathode materials with excellent performance still severely impedes the development of aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Herein, an in-situ electrochemical induction strategy is developed to prepare hollow nanotube-like amorphous vanadium oxide and carbon (a-V 2 O 5 @C) hybrid and its electrochemical performance is investigated comprehensively as cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Benefitting from the unique amorphous structure of V 2 O 5 and intimate contact between amorphous V 2 O 5 and carbon, the a-V 2 O 5 @C hybrid possess the abundant ion storage sites, isotropic ion diffusion routes and excellent conductivity. As a result, the a-V 2 O 5 @C hybrid cathode shows outstanding specific capacity of 448 mAh g−1 at 0.15 A g−1. Impressively, the a-V 2 O 5 @C hybrid cathode exhibits superior cycling stability, even when cycling at high current density of 10 A g−1, that the 96.5% specific capacity retention can be gained over 1500 cycles, corresponding to an average specific capacity loss of only 0.0023% per cycle. Furthermore, the mechanism involved is illustrated by systematical characterizations. Developing cathodes capable of working at intermediate temperatures (IT) is key to improving solid oxide fuel cells' (SOFC) durability, ease of operation, and manufacturing cost reduction. BaFeO 3-δ (BFO)-based perovskites are ideal candidates because of their fast kinetics, which is due to the mixed conduction of oxygen vacancies and electron-holes. Thus, maximizing their oxygen vacancy and hole concentration can further enhance oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysis. This work proposes to achieve this by generating A-site deficiency, which introduces negative charges into the perovskite crystal. The paper presents a computational and experimental analysis of this strategy on BFO-based cathodes, using (Ba 0.95 La 0.05) 1-x FeO 3-δ as a case study. A-site deficiency increases the concentration of oxygen vacancies and holes, improving ORR catalysis. In addition, it eases oxygen surface exchange by hindering Ba segregation. As a result, A-site deficiency improves the overall electrochemical properties of BFO-based cathodes, providing a simple and effective method to enhance their performance. • A-site deficiency generates oxygen vacancies and electron holes in BaFeO 3-δ. • Oxygen vacancies boost the ionic conductivity. • Electron holes increase the electronic conductivity. • A-site deficient BaFeO 3-δ -based materials also show reduced Ba surface segregation. • A-site deficiency has an overall beneficial effect on the cathode performance. Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries are emerged as fascinating "beyond Li-ion" battery technologies for large-scale energy storage due to low cost, high theoretical capacity, high safety and environmental friendliness. However, developing cathode materials with outstanding electrochemical performance are prerequisites. Herein, the a-V 2 O 5 @Ti 3 C 2 T x heterostructure is prepared by in situ incorporating amorphous V 2 O 5 with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene to enhance the rechargeable aqueous Zn-ion batteries performance. Benefitting from the distinctive amorphous structure of a-V 2 O 5 , outstanding conductivity of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and the strong synergistic effect between two components, the a-V 2 O 5 @Ti 3 C 2 T x heterostructure presents isotropic ion diffusion paths, plentiful ion storage sites and splendid conductivity. As a consequence, the a-V 2 O 5 @Ti 3 C 2 T x heterostructure displays excellent specific capacity of 544 mAh g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 and outstanding rate performance. Particularly, even at a fairly high current density of 30 A g−1, the a-V 2 O 5 @Ti 3 C 2 T x heterostructure shows an impressive specific capacity of 135 mAh g−1 along with about 100% coulombic efficiency after 1000 cycles. Furthermore, the mechanism related is expounded via comprehensive characterizations.
